You'd think it would be built in, but does anyone know if it will be possible to use the Wizard as a Windows Sideshow device in Vista? I got a horizontal dock for this thing just so I'd be able to run a gadget or two on it, but I'm surprised they didn't have it working out of the box ... with the popularity of the Wizard at Microsoft.
A quick search on google shows that there is quite a lot of interest for this.
IMO, it is almost certain this functionality will be added to Windows Mobile devices; lets just hope they don't limit it to WM6 devices.

Very Good idea, I got some old phones with 2.5" LCD working, it is now time to wake them!
um.. install resco photo viewer.. i remember this feature on my hp6515a and after installing resco i have it back!

Sideshow is a technology included with Windows Vista that allows for an external LCD to display widgets, even with the PC powered off. This allows you to see at a glance the weather, if you have e-mail, etc. It's primary use is in tiny LCDs on notebook covers, though if you could use your mobile for this, that would be really neat too.
MS is working on an app that does work on the Wizard, I have used a beta. It was very bugy but it worked.
How about this:
http://www.innobec.com/en/products.php
It adds a virtual display driver to your Windows (XP); this display is an activesync-connected PDA.
I have tried the trial version, and it appears to work (allthough a bit unstable, but I was using a bluetooth connection at the time).

This doesn't work with Active Sync 4.5 and or WM6
looks like they might be scrapping the development of this because of the similar features in vista.

Hah, I hadn't tried it with 4.5; nor does my device have WM6. But in a way it makes sense to stop this functionality. Still, I only recently came across it and thought it could have given some people some ideas.

I wasn't crapping on it, I think it looks cool. I wish it worked for me. I would rather have WM6 than a 320x240 extension to my desktop though. I already have a dual monitor setup.
Sidewindow can be alternative of sideshow but you have to run samurize plugins on that display to look like sideshow. Microsoft states that mobile devices can be used as sideshow with vista, i have tryed many ways and i have no success with this task
I saw one of the Microsoft Powerpoint presentations on their website presenting the sideshow feature and one of the devices among the usual picture frames and things was actually a Smartphone, it looks like in house at microsoft they have done it but jsut not yet for us. EDIT: See http://download.microsoft.com/downl...56b-d47a59388df0/pdc_2005_auxilarydisplay.ppt
Just came across this:
http://www.zoneos.com/index.htm
It works with ActiveSync 4.5 and with WM5 (even though the ppc executable only states 2003). Functionality is the same as the innobec software: it adds a virtual display driver.

Works on WiFi with Server 2003 and WM6 as the client. Very cool, not very usefull but very cool.
Could someone post the Pocket PC and Windows Vista files for ZoneScreen? Unfortunately, the author has removed all the files from his site in favor of the open source release (http://sourceforge.net/projects/zonescreen/) which only has the files for Windows XP.
Best uses for Sideshow
The best usage of this will be with remote controls for Media Center PC's. You'll be able to sit outside on the porch and browse your music files or other media without needing to see the TV screen. This way you can have speakers outside and you can play whatever music you want. Added functionality will be when they finally make the app for windows mobile devices so that you won't even need a third party remote. With 3G devices such as the Hermes (8525) you won't even need to connect via wifi or bluetooth. You'll see all your album art, receive feedback of "now playing" items, etc. It will turn your pda into an expensive 2-way touchpanel such as Crestron, AMX, or ELAN offer. I say screw the laptops. Check out this link and then imagine that on your PDA.
<http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/21/ricavisions-vista-mce-sideshow-remote-does-bluetooth-at-100-met/>
All those complaining about why it doesn't work on vista:
You need ActiveSync for this application which has been replaced with Mobile Device User Center, so it doesn't work. I hope there's an update on the way to make it work, because in partnership with konfabulator widgets, it's incredible. It had it built in a case, and it displayed all the systems specs via widgets.
You want to know how to run Windows Vista on Athena? Well, read on!
Firstly, is not really installing the Vista on Athena, i uses the terminal client services to remote control my desktop.
This is the application i use, it's the TCS in WM6, at least 10x better then the original WM5 one. Simply install it and run it, you will have to have knowledge of remote desktop to set this up. I will not try to cover here because there are some ways. Do a search on the net and you will find lots of into.
Below i attach the WM6 TCS and a screen shot of my Vista Ready Athena!
Haha, you got yourself a UMPC now.
That looks Amazing...

And indeed much better then the WM5 implementation of TCS.

It's never gonna work for me...I'm using XP Home Edition. Home Edition does not support Remote desktop/TCS, even though the application comes with it.
Confirmed by microsoft. It will work with XP Pro though! Might just upgrade it then, but can't remember if that wipes all of my installed apps? Don't fancy re-installing them...way too many.

Hey Wu. Can you or anyone else who has successfully got the WM6 Remote Desktop to work on the Athena please give me some guidance?
1st. Thanks for the link Slave 1.....the web based 'LogMein' works a treat!
Wu..I done a clean install of XP Pro (supports TCS and Remote Desktop) and I installed all necessary components for XP & Remote Desktop. Activated 'Allow users....to Remote Desktop' etc.. My problem is not knowing what to put in the 'Domain' section in the WM6 Remote Desktop application. Is Domain the same as IP? Forgive my ignorance on this...I'm a noob to this..
If it's IP info required for this part, which one? I think I have a static IP address, but am not sure. When I check my IP over the web it is different to what shows up for my PC??!!
I'm confused now. This I believe is my only glitch now. Help please. 'LogMeIn.com' works fine, but it's implementation leaves a lot to be desired and all of you guys seem to really like the WM6 style.
Pointers please.

you don't really need to type in anything in the domain, you can leave it blank, the most important part is the first one, the computer name, you have to type in the IP address of your computer, or your actual computer name if you are connecting on a local network. check your computer IP, and just put it in there, it should work.

Hi there,
does someone happen to know whether there is a free but capable SSH client available for the X1?
When i say "capable" it means that I would like to see the ability to create store and if possible record sessions, provide SSH/SSH2, and that all major keys like ESC, CTRL-C etc. are implemented...
So far I just came across MidpSSH but that was a lil bit too less.
thx alot

Was a little bored and thought I'd Remote my Win7 Netbook with the Xperia.
Had a laugh at the expense of some of my fellow Engineers/Computer Scientists.
Some figured it instantly, some had no clue, believes it really was running Win7, some thought it was themes etc of course, and came up with smart arse ideas of what it _must_ be
Bit I found the funniest is that the damn Xperia actually has a higher resolution that the netbook I was remoting with it.
Yes, that's really how big the damned Windows Live messenger is on my laptop(netbooks) 10" screen.
Yes, I photoshop on it, although I use a mouse that's worth more than the netbook itself (touchpads too cramped)
Yes, it's running Win7 and WinXP perfectly. (Infact it's also running Mac OSX 10.5.6 and Fedora 10 also, but those two partitions aren't shown in Win7.
nice ... but things will be tiny and even using the stylus will be tricky...

Yep, standard RDP program, it works fine for me and I can type etc. What's the problem?
I have no idea!
I use the software with the original name 'Remote Desktop' (the flatscreen-with-satellite-dish-icon) right now. It does not allow me to type anything as soon as the connection is made. The soft keyboard as well as the fixed keyboard don't work.
The version I had before this (same software differrent version?) did allow me to type but always had the numlock on, without the option to turn it off.
There must me a right version out there

No Problem, glad I could help.
I am looking for an app that will allow me to use my N1 as a basic touchpad for my PC running VNC. I hap an app for my iPad that did just this, but I had to sell my iPad. It worked flawlessly, had multitouch gestures for scrolling, forward/back, etc. The app for my iPad was free, and I'm hoping to find one that is free for Android as well. I've done a lot of searching, and all I can find are apps that $3+ or ones that require some other server side software and don't work with VNC. I was recently fired from my job of ten years and my right hand is broken(I'm right handed BTW) so free is preferable, I'd be willing to pay $1.00 even. I don't need keyboard support, just mouse with buttons, drag/drop, multitouch would be nice too. My phone is rooted and running CM7, if that helps any.
Not sure about compatability with VNC, but Gmote works pretty nicely though you do have to install SW. I have a HTPC in my bedroom and sometimes it is just easier to control using my phone when lying down.
Saw that, it doesn't use VNC. Whatever I'm looking for needs to be using VNC.
gmote 2.0 works pretty well, you just have to install a server on your computer which is pretty easy. in-app instructions are given after you dl it from the market.

As I stated in the OP and my last reply, I don't want to install another piece of software. I want to use VNC. If it was done on iOS device for free, then it's bound to exist for Android as well for free or cheap.

I haven't really found anything that doesn't require additional software on top of your VNC software. The closest thing I can think of would be another VNC program. I personally use android-vnc-viewer which works great, but again it's just a straight VNC program.
why would you want to do it via vnc that transmits video when you can use gmote and send the mouse co-ordinated via touchpad directly to the server running on the computer, seems like ur buy the tea factory just for 1 cuppa

I don't want full video of my desktop, this is the app I had on my iPad that did just what I'm asking for here. I thought it was free, but I guess I had forgoten that it wasn't. In any case, it made my iPad into a grey surface that I could use with my PC like a touchpad, but it worked via VNC.

So I broke down and tried gmote, it sucks, lags badly, no multitouch. I saw other apps that have multitouch, but I'm still back to the fact that I don't need some other piece of crap running in the background just for this when I know it can be done with VNC. If it can be done on iOS, I know it can be done on Android, just wish I were a programer so I could do it myself.

Unified Remote
You could try the 'Unified Remote' app for Android (but it requires a server-side application to run on the PC).
The touchpad part works awesomely, and Unified Remote will work via Bluetooth or Wifi/3G.
There are also 'plugin' remotes that work for other situations, like Youtube remote, Windows Media Player remote, keyboard, VLC remote, etc...
I can't remember where I heard it from but I heard gmote works good.
