Just curious.
Many "unlimited" data plans still have some type of monthly cap (e.g. 5GB) that many people are not aware of, and if you go over that cap, they can terminate your data plan without notice. Has this happened to anybody?
Here are some baseline data usage traffic that I've measured:
-refreshing CNN rss hub containing 10 headlines: 8KB
-updating 8 cities in touchflo weather: 17KB
-launching opera to google homepage: 20KB
-activate send/receive for one new email: 26KB
-launching factory youtube player: 240KB
-opening youtube homepage via opera: 324KB
-using opera to get to yahoo mail inbox: 360KB
-launching google maps and playing around for about 2 minutes (panned around, opened street view, opened satellite view, got directions once): total ~1024KB = ~1MB
-playing a 5 minute video using factory youtube player: 20767KB = ~20.3MB
So, data usage can really add up if you use it everyday. Using about 170MB a day adds up to 5GB in a month. How much data are you guys using per day or month?
i have a 200MB plan and the last to month i used about 20-30mb each ^^ didnt happen to use it much
imo its almost impossible to get 5gb ^^ i hardly get hsdpa (not even 3G) so its kinda crap with my phone.. 200mb is overkill for me uses a lot of battery as well
only just got mine but have "unlimited" usage on my vodafone uk tariff....nice little small print in the "fair use policy" show unlimited to them actually means 500MB a month.....I hope I don't breach it.

definitely spd wireless monitor. costs a small bit but its awesome..
i usually average 50-100 mb a month on my kaiser ising manilla weather at least once a day, little bits and bobs of browsing, push e-mail with 2-3 emails a day, the ocasional small file download off the net, occasional you tube use...
but my fisrt month with touch hd i used 250mb, i think i did a lot more browsing, downloading and you tubeing. not had my second bill yet
on N!ghty's recommendation I grabbed a copy of SPB Wireless Monitor......very good little app. Not going to make use of the today screen plugin due to Touch HD's theme...but still..check it every now and then and it's doing the job.
NOTE: anyone else hate SPB's icon set...bunch of balls (atoms?) stuck together...just...shocking!
I had used spb for data monitoring a while ago but had switched to Efficasoft GPRS Traffic Monitor. I install it on my SD card so that after each hard reset I don't lost the month to date data. No reinstallation either after each hard reset. Just make copy the shortcut for spgm.exe to the startup folder and spgtc.exe to the Start Menu and I'm done.
I have flat rate data plan, fine print says it's 10 gb per month. To be honest, haven't breached a 1 gb yet Although I expect to be around 3-4 gb once I start traveling around again these days...
My plan is only 250 mb in a month.
It is very easy to reach.
I used spb wireless monitor to get those numbers above...I recommend it for those who don't have unlimited data because it also lets you set an alarm after a certain amount of usage to help prevent going over.
In case others like me didn't know this...leaving your data connection on all the time doesn't use up any data. However, obivously, it will use up data when it updates things you have set to automatically update (like email, weather, etc).
Is there any way to look it up on the touch hd software without installing a new app like efficasoft or spb wireless monitor?

No, Windows Mobile itself doesn't support it .
i get 500mb through Orange's "unlimited internet"
curious to see how my first month's bill comes out.
In my first 4 days i've been using it alot setting things up, fiddling around and sending myself .cab files and images etc when in the office (as didn't have the USB cable or blutooth)
I too have a vodafone "unlimited" package with a fair use policy of 500mb....I've used 45mb in the last month.
To give you and idea of my usages...I have my emails set to download via contract internet (HSDPA) every 5 minutes...I use the internet about 10-30mins a day on contract internet...so 40mb is pretty good.
I don't use it do grab torrents or anything like that obviously
On a 1Gb plan with Three. Normally use 500 - 800Mb each month, most going towards youtube entertainment on the bus.
If I go over my cap, I get billed and the rates are shocking O___o
I watch a couple of videos but mainly it's just browsing for me, I rarely go above 200-300MB.

I use SPB and use Sashimi to help load everything back after a flash.. One thing it will do is backup and then restore you 'My Documents' to the phone so I haven't lost the SPB data for a while.
I get through about 1-200mb a month on O2 uk. I also use the online billing to keep an eye on how much I go through. It's update daily so I never have any issues with using too much
Although I haven't measured the data usage or anything, I'm sure that if you're surfing through Google's mobile proxy

your data usage will be less than if you were viewing web sites directly, as the proxy strips down a web site to its bare essentials... Of course, this means you won't get the full browsing experience, but it's good for web sites where you're mostly interested in the text content.
On the other extreme, a browser like Skyfire (which attempts to replicate the PC browsing experience on your mobile device) is probably going to hit your bandwidth hard.
It would be interesting if someone did a comparison of data usage with these two methods.

just as the topic states, I am going to be taking a trip back to alaska in about a month. I wanted to Pre-Cache maps for pretty much any gps program ( im willing to buy it if it works ) that would work on my advantage. on my nokia N800 there was a program called Maemo Mapper and it was amazing as far as pre-fetching maps for a selected area at a selected zoom level....With it I could pre-fetch the whole island im visiting and have it stored on my mem card...but thats linux heh. I'm not lookin for road maps either,only sattelite images such as googlemaps. Any input as far as what your using, and if its capable of caching maps and then pulling them up later with NO internet or cellular coverage whatsoever...thanks!
Im trying Virtual Earth Mobile right now, and the map cache feature is there, however you would have to navigate the entire path i was to travel in order to prefetch the area...no select specified area. and secondly but most importantly, the zoom level for virtual earth mobile is crap compared to say google earth, VEM wont let me get close enuf with satellite to do any good.
I would be very much interested in this if you ever find an answer. I know that you if you download the images manually which is a very pain staking process then you can use a number of programs. Like I said it very long process and for a small area it works.

I know under linux using maemo mapper, it was a very valuable option, and it was widely used. I tried downloading a program called tracky, which supposebly pulls googlemaps images and then will cache them for later viewing, but I am struggling with getting it to download the maps properly. ....we cant be the first people that have needed to cache an area of googlemaps at a certain zoom level....
on a totally different note...i was trying to install a game called "the mark" a sniper game...installed fine, loaded game and graphics glitched, had to manually reset via the reset hole on the back. rebooted ameo and it was like I had just hard reset....no programs, had to retap stylus and reset time/date. Now the microdrive and the storage card have ALL the files on them, just none of the associations for the programs installed on the microdrive are there...and all my settings/home screen are back to stock! WTF happened when i just simply reset the phone?did something with the game I intalled corrupt the phone? I was hopeing that AP4.0 would be out before something like this happened....If there isnt a way to restore the file associations, I will just backup the files I need off the drive and storage card, and then actually do a hard reset and format the microdrive

heh, I used to have spb backup on my phone, then i realized...that most of the time I did a hard reset was to wipe clean alot of the scummy programs...which was what I was including in my full backup. do i decided to go without it...now I wish i still had it anyways im not really that mad..only takes me a couple hours to get everything back the way it was manually. soooo....anyone else out there care to comment on their gps software?
I don't know man. I wuld love to have the same thing. I have a wireless router at home, and am probably going to cancel my unlimited data plan for awhile. There must be a way, free hopefully.
Before you cancel your unlimited AT&T plan, you should check out the currently available data plans. Last time I checked the unlimited plan was GONE, replaced by a plan that has a monthly data cap. (5 GB?)
Unlimited data ? In the great white north there is no such thing as unlimited data. $80US buys about 100MB a month!
well i've got a little more than a month before I'm heading off for a much needed vacation. Someone out there hopefully knows of a gps program where i can cache the maps to either the microdrive or storage card for viewing with my gps when I have NO data connection. As far as data plans go...I have tmobile's unlimited data plan...and with my minutes and unlimited texting, its less than 75 a month....now I'm not sure if thats truly an "unlimited" amount of data, but I have downloaded several 1-2 gig movies thru windows mobile torrent without any trouble....(and thats thru the GPRS connection cause tmobile dont have 3g in the US...at least not that im aware of yet.
Did i actually find something new that our advantages cant do? ( not due to hardware lacking, just no software to support it) I may end up digging out my N800 and charging up my solar bluetooth gps receiver...it just sucks to bring multiple devices..was hopeing to show off all the advantages power
I use Ozi Explorer, and generate large google earth maps using MAPV Ozi .. it's not the easiest to use (not native english program), and the calibration of the maps is wrong (must be manually calibrated).. but it's much easier than a series of stitched screen captures.
Since I cant rely on the local cell network where I live (and thus Google Maps), I just went ahead and bought Street Atlas 2008 since it was cvheap and included all North American maps. But while the maps are accurate the driections and voice prompts suck.
Next Im going to try Tom Tom Navigator, but its a lot more expensive.
Just suggestions if you cant find a way to cache Google's maps...

No worries. I FOUND IT!!
Not only can you store the maps, even sat view, google maps is built into it, among several other useful utilities. This is awesome. It also caches map images automatically, and you can change the destination folders. I'll attach pics of automatically cached images.
Features include speed alert, trip computer, geocoder, dashboard view with speed, altitude, percentage of slope, and g force. Much more.
So what's the catch?........That's right, its not free. Trial automatically quits after 15 minutes, but you can start the program over. You cannot save the maps with trial version. However, it says you can download street and sat maps on the desktop then transfer.
Why was this so hard to find? This should be for sale all over the net.

its very useful for your plans, you even can tell the programm the amount of space it should use on the staorage card to store your 'offlinemaps'. has a lot other more or less usefull functions too. in the momemt i try out if this is stable and reliable like gpstuner.
2. GPSTuner
is another one that does the job. i think its a bit longer on the market than tracky. it support some more map sources like topographic maps, not only googlemaps. i have used this for all my (offroad) outdoortrips like inlineskating the last few years. it has lovely statistic functions also. even a (survival ) trip by car across west africa (16 hours for 600km driving, wich means a hole lot of data to capture) was correctly handled by the program without any problems. in the moment it is my prefered app for the job.
3. GPSMeter
this is very close to gpstuner, but i dont know if it's capable to precache maps. i stop monitoring this one because the other 2 programs are already serving all my needs.
the are a dozend or more programs out there but they are more specific to things like gecaching, and (in my view) to complex to be used as 'every day all prupose gps tool'.

Hey guys it's my first post on this forum so i'm still learning about things .
My problem is that I had a Sony K608i (old I know) Pre-paid on 3 Mobile and I never used even half of my credit within the 30 days using Youtube, MSN, Facebook etc now I have an Omnia II I've used over half of my credit in a day, i'm not sure if this is because it can bring the web pages up in the proper format or what but I can't afford to get credit ever 2 or 3 days.
I'm signed upto the 250Mb data pack and i'm not going onto any different sites that I normally wouldn't go on I haven't changed any system settings for internet or networking in general, if you can help it would be very much appreciated.

Don't know if it makes a difference but when you download pages are you downloading in full page format (like a pc) or mobile view? How were you downloading on your old phone?
You probably downloaded applications on your phone.
Web pages (whole or for the phone) did not affect the package.
Well, after a lot of hours of work, I'm real close to putting my first app out.
It includes a 5MB database that can't be loaded from /assets due to it's size. The app itself is small.
Now, as I know it, there are 2 deployment methods:
1. Google Market
2. My own hosted site
Google Market is easy on end user...find an app, install (and pay if req'd). Works over 3g and WiFi. Gives you 24 hours to uninstall before you're credit card is charged. Drawbacks are one-time $100 vendor fee and 20% fee per download. Plus, as my apps may grow, the databases I use could get fairly large. Now, most phones can handle the size (my Droid goes to 40 gig with 32 gig SD card), but searching a huge database on the phone could lag like crazy.
A self-hosted site can be had for $50 a year from GoDaddy or 1 and 1 with FTP, MySQL databases and much, much more. With the SQL running on a hosted server, queries would be fast. Drawbacks are the user has to download Google ADB package, app and database. Then hook-up phone via USB, set a couple of settings on the phone and actually run the "adp install <package name>". Then you need some type of payment center (Paypal) and possibly a refund policy.
So, I'm on the fence here...comments and suggestions appreciated!
From what I've read, lagging for loading databases can be brought to a minimum by altering the way it loads. Instead of loading all the content up front (possibly with a dialog to keep the user amused while waiting) or by loading it as the information comes in. The listView might lag because of the phone's memory available as opposed to a problem with the app. It could be the app. If it needs resources, then make it a top priority and allow it to tell the OS to kill other resource-hogging applications to make way for the information download. It's just a speculation. I don't know this for sure, but I would check the Android Dev site and other places for more information.
Interesting idea...I could just set the data (about 80,000 rows) up as a flat file and then do an INSERT based on user input. Do query, return results and delete rows from table. That takes it to, on average, about a 2,000 row table.
Not sure how I can encapsulate (hide) the data from prying eyes or worse yet, changes to the data! But I will research that idea further and do some code changes and testing....thank you very much
I decided to get a hosted site for a couple of reasons:
1. To get my OWN MySQL databases
2. To create a web site to drive my business and apps delivery
I've finished my application and it works great. 80,000 row database on server, app is 40kb on the phone. Data retrieval is fast...i can get over 100 rows back in 2 seconds on 3G; WiFi would be even faster.
I've decided to push my apps to users via the web site. I'll offer a crippled demo version for review before they buy...no return policy. That is, if you like the demo and buy it, well, you made the choice LOL
I'm still not warm and fuzzy about making user download adb package, hook-up phone via usb and install. But I'll offer something I don't see much on Google Market and that is: SUPPORT. Each app I create will have it's own e-mail address for comments, concerns, enhancements and, god forbid, bug reports. I'll probably also offer free updates if I change the program or upgrade the database.
Well, time to go do the web site. I'll admit I would rather be coding vs. web site design!
Why not both? You could use google and it's HUGE base of users (which may never even know about your app otherwise) and still host the database online at your site. Note that many (most) phones are crippled by the carrier to NOT allow downloads from anything but the market.
Frankly, I think you could probably do it more efficiently. I don't know the details, but why not have the app download the database from your site upon first usage and store it to SD card? A local copy even on an SD card will be orders of magnitude faster than any online solution.

Speed is not an issue on this app; max rows I pull back may be 60 and it takes 2 seconds. Literally, by the time your finger is off the "Search" button, you have your data And if you think about it, how many databases are out there already that people are hitting off of web pages? My 2 second download was on 3G, I imagine the WiFi to be even faster (just tested it on WiFi...3G was faster LOL)
I like the control of the database on my end and it keeps the user from having to download a new copy if the database is updated.
And I'm trying to look at the big picture here too. I'm an unemployed programmer after a 13 year career. I don't mind coding apps for "the people", but I want to get my foot in the door of business' that are going to need smart apps, just like they all needed a web page years ago.
I just have to do some more research and make a decision. However, I do think you are right; the market has huge exposure and can even lead people to my site. The hosted sites is dirt cheap...$50 a year.
I know my app is pretty solid, just hate to think about paying that one-time vendor fee and the 20% per download. Then again, that takes ALL the billing concerns from me; the market handles it all.

Hey guys, I just bought my wife this phone last week and put her on the limited data plan since she is mostly on wifi. Question is what apps are eating data in the background while she is off wifi? I have so far turned off google background synching and thats it. Any more suggestions?

I have never closely tracked my data use since I am on an unlimited plan. If you are concerned about bloat eating into your wife's 200mb though, then I would root and put Iced Glacier (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844594) and AdsFree on her phone.
IG is stock without bloatware. I have been running stock since I got my phone at release and finally decided the current batch of ROMs we have are stable enough to play with. IG is running great, a bit faster than stock, some minor graphical tweaks, but still otherwise identical just minus the bloat crpa.
AdsFree will redirect all advertisement servers to 127.0.0.1 (localhost; the phone itself) so that ads don't download and eat into your precious quota. AdsFree does require root, though.

I am thinking of doing the exact thing with a family plan member, I will be installing a task killer and ad free, but I have installed an app (pro version - costs under $4) on mine that tracks data usage by program on the network - not WiFi (which is free anyway).
It is called 3G Watchdog. The free version does not break it out by app. So far, I have been surprised how much email program is using. i do not get a lot of emails, so ( am assuming it is background activity (like checking periodically for new mail).
It is set up for billing period and your plan limit. i also loaded my plan moth-to-date usage in, and it has been tracking pretty good against my TMo usage in "MY Account". When you switch over to WiFi - no activity is recorded - which is exactly the way it should be to monitor your paid data usage.
For their limited plans (with mb limits) - this app is a must.
We have many report for big data usage on wp7 also when i usage data connection my hd2 is too hot.. that make me sceptical..
for that reason i make this thread if is not the right place please mod move it to the right place
Microsoft say: the problem coming from 3rd party apps
Some other say the problem coming from many differnet update that use the wp7 system e.g.email update, contacts update/facebook and more
Some other report says the HTC hub is one of the reason... use so much data..
That you can do is: set all account manual about the sync
Just go to settings / account and tap every account and set it manual
Fot htc hub go to in to hub and settings , do the same..

I don't know if this is true or not. I am not experiencing heave data absorption without my knowledge. I can check my data consumption on the Voda website and I have a 1Gb allowance each month. I've been using WP7 as soon it went semi-public and I'm still having about 780Mb out of 1Gb left. (last update was yesterday) It is not like I am not using the internet, but I do check on mobile websites as it just renders faster and it doesn't need the zoom too often. Multitouch zoom on HD2 is a bit of a problemchild.
I do had my concerns about the social networking integration as I thought it would pull everybody's picture gallery to my phone and would upload every picture that I have to Skydrive, but that doesn't seems to be the thing.
Overall, though the WP7 was not meant for the HD2, it's going to be here for always on my phone. sob...

There is not useful information in your post. "We have many report for big data usage on wp7" Who are we? What is many? Disable Data connection if you don't like traffic. Connect on Wi-Fi, log all connections from your computer and take a look where the traffic goes and you'll know what app you need to delete.
Funnily enough I just happened to check my bill after reading this and I'm up to 750mb since the start of the month. Normally I'd average about 200mb at most.
I had the HTC hub installed which has been promptly removed so I'm gonna keep an eye on it now and see if that was the cause of the massive data jump.

I did notice a single big jump in data downloading on initial setup, this was because of facebook i think, not the facebook app, didnt happen until i had set that up so my feeling is its downloading pictures and other info, if you have many many friends on FB this would be exponential. anyhow, i didnt notice this until i got a out of starage space message, because my SD card hadnt worked first time round. So, if that is indeed the case and not just a huge coincidance connect up your phone to your PC and install/setup facebook, then see what happens

You are right! we = (I some other chefs + some beta tester of our roms and some blogers)
Nice way...!!! Do you know any program that can count the traffic? Do you have count any program?
Another thing to add to the 'Reasons to avoid WM7 like the plague and stay on Android' list.
Share Wi-Fi from your computer/laptop, connect mobile through it, install any traffic counter or firewall on your PC (or use proxy that provides logs/reports), look where your traffic is going. I don't care about traffic on my mobile at the moment, so I am not going to check it myself, but that's pretty easy task.

Simple solution. Get unlimited internet without fair usage nonsense As I usually go over 1 GB with my HD2 regardless of the OS that's what I did. You pay a little more but don't have to worry that a facebook photo may cost you 1 Euro

Well I noticed Mine was hogging data at 5 in the morning well I was still sleeping. I did a comparison and in 2 days My win 7 HD2 used 125 Mb data and my HD2 with win 6.5 used 60 Mb. I used them pretty much equally.
Old news to me.
