How many apps do you have installed? - G1 General

Now I'm not trying to make this into a competition but I'm just trying to get an idea of how many apps people have installed. I want to get an idea what is a lot and what the average is.
I have 159 apps installed and they are installed in my SD card.
How about you?
PS... EASY WAY TO COUNT YOUR APPS IS BY USING ATRACKDOG AND ONCE ITS FINISHED SCANNING YOUR APPS CLICK ON "VERSION TRACKING" ON THE BOTTOM. NEXT PAGE SHOULD DISPLAY YOUR TOTAL NUMBER OF APPS.

AS OF 2-16
Okay the results are in so far... and we have an average of 64 apps per person and a high of 266 apps and a low of 3 apps.
Edit/Delete Message

i have apps on my sdcard to, got as high as 113 but went down to 40

I've got 139 installed here, but once the Market gets paying apps, I think I'll need to get a 16Gb sd card and increase the size of my ext2 partition.

...really you guys? I only have 4 installed

Holy crap you guys I only have 39

I have 3 right now...

86 so far.

What the heck do you guys have installed??? That's like having 9 pages of iPhone apps...and barely using them.

i use ALL of my apps (not including the 5 games i have) some of them are extentions to other apps like oi convert csv, and oi voice notes and tts.

i've installed about 5 apps and thats about it!
What are they

Hello Aim and a few others! Dont really need that many plus it keeps my phone running fast and smooth!

Err, quite a bit, actually. I have a wonderfully powerful computer (with phone, wifi, internet access, etc.) in the palm of my hand, and I want it to do whatever I need it to do within a few swipes and taps
Note:
No kittens where harmed during photoshopping of the middle image to protect the innocent

I have 73 apps installed but about 20 I really dont need that are just for fun like the Mr T sound board. I dont think I could ever get as high as some of you guys.

I didn't realize I had that many. I have 123 so far (didn't really look very carefully but I'm sure that includes some of the stock apps that came preinstalled). I don't even worry about space anymore now that all my apps are being ran through the SD.

Yikes.....
Erm.... thought more people would be closer to what I apparently have amassed --- well color me surprised.
I currently have 266 apps installed.
Here's a screenshot of aTrackDog - incidentally, is there any other way to display total # of apps??

Last count 102 here.

Holy Batman! 266 apps? haha. Here are the apps I have.

Yes click on version tracking on atrackdog. It will show you there. I just put this in the main post too so people dont have to count 1 by 1.

40+ and all of them are on internal memory.

83 and growing
honestly guys i dont use many of the 83 apps i have but i do use almost 15 of them .
was just trying to see how many apps i can do on my sd card without feeling a little lag. have 1.1GB on EXT2 only 180MB is used and i dont think i can fill it. and by the way the phone is noticeably slowing down now. takes about 3 to 4 seconds to accept a call after i press it.

I actually use all the apps I've downloaded. I don't see any sense anything other than I need.

Cannot accept call, Slider wont work when the phone is busy.

This has happened to me numerous times and i'm wondering if its a common issue:
You receive a call and you cant slide the slide the slider to accept the call for the life of you. A sew seconds later you get a dialog saying that the Dialer app is not responding; Force close /Wait.
This usually happens when you're trying to load a web page or playing a game. (anything processor intensive)
Is there a fix for this? Maybe set the priority of the dialer process higher if you have root ?

this happened a lot with G1... but never with Nexus One. I even watched movies or listened to music etc., and still the call will come through immediately.
I wonder how many apps you have installed, and how much memory you have left?
Cleaning up all unnecessary apps you never use + checking all automated services (such as feed readers, news/weather updaters, Email probers, etc. should be set to decent times (e.g. my news feed reader never loads news automatically, only on app start, weather updates every 4 hours, etc.)
I have a LOT of apps installed (around 180). Only about 20MB internal disk space left.
In fact I frequently need to uninstall apps to install new ones
I don t have a lot of apps running. Usually about 40-50MB RAM free.

WOW WOW WO
180 apps? How can you possibly make use of them all? I have 120 right now, and already feel it's too much (like... do we really ever use Google Goggles, or Finance?, or Wikitude, or... or...)
I have about 90MB internal disk space left, and I don't want to go much lower than that
But I guess what's killing you is that a lot of these apps, although maybe not running permanently, will wake up from time to time, to check your location, to update this or that, to do this or that....
I would try to reduce the number a lot and see whether the problem goes away, maybe say at 50MB internal space.
I always tell myself, even if it's cool to show off an app to a friend, if I don't really use it a lot or at all, I can delete it and always install it again if I want to - that's the beauty of the market (also paid apps remain paid, and can be redownloaded for free, unless you have refunded them).
hope it helps
another thing that could give you another 40MB, + using the second memory bank which is currently not in use on stock is to root the phone and flash cyanogen's CM 5.0 beta5 (or wait until it's out of beta).
That's maybe why I have 90 MB left at 120 apps, and you have only 20 MB left at 180 apps.
This would also provide more RAM, and you could run smoother with the number of apps open.
but just do the rooting if you really want to, as it voids warranty

Thanks for the advice. cyanogen's ROMs are very tempting, but looking at the changes it looks like it gets better every week. I think I'll wait for a bit before rooting and jump in at 5.0 FINAL.

Iwant to throw my archos 70 out of the window

Hello everyone
I have been a loyal archos user for a year now, first with the a5IT and now the 70 internet tablet. As form factor I love the Archos 70 internet tab but the software is killing me it is so slow, what can I do to make it fast again?

What in particular is slow?
If scrolling home screens is slow, or icons are taking time to show up (or refresh) try a different launcher than the default. Popular ones lately have been Go Launcher, ADW.Launcher, and Zeam.
Are you using the most recent firmware update? (2.0.71 has sped the systems up quite a bit from the older versions)
http://www.archos.com/support/support_tech/updates.html?country=us&lang=en&#firm
Are you using an SD card? (If so try adding a file named .nomedia to the card to reduce the gallery from spending time scanning).
Did you install Google Voice? (If not, you should refrain from it since, it is dragging down a lot of systems).
What speed (in settings) do you have your processor set to run. (The most responsive is the Overdrive setting).
If you want to know how to speed your system up you'll need to tell us what is slow about it.
The overall system is getting really unresponsive and what bugs me the most is when I try to install any app through .apk the device fails on me and freezes. Basically when I try to instal any app it freezez when I try to use an app it freezes most of the time
I am using the latest update with the middle setting for power but overdrive doesn't make a big difference. I am running adw launcher which helped and is really good compared to the stock launcher.
The device freezes a lot and thats not because of me having a lot of apps when I get home I will try reinstalling the update keeping the device on overdrive for a long time and will report back

i would do a reset. it really is not as bad as it sounds.
market will tie your purchases to your account, just power off, hold vol-down and power up. choose reset, and then reset device( i do & storage). make sure firmware is 2.0.71, and install gapps5. then just watch what you install, and uninstall things you don't use.
Yeah, it sounds like you need to do a full reinitialization and then reinstall the newest firmware.
My A70 was literally not usable after I tried to upgrade. It was freezing every minute. After a reinstall, everything works great.
And don't forget to set your CPU to overdrive. Really doesn't affect battery too much, and the speed is noticeable.
I turned off the animated live wallpaper. Made my 101 noticable faster.
Deinstall VoiceSearch
You should deinstall the updates of VoiceSearch ....
thanks guys I did a full reinitiolization (not sure bout spelling) and now it is working better, i chose not to install the market and just use applanet for what i want to download, working good now but we'll see how it ends up after a few days of use.
thanks guys you were really helpfull.
dont know if the contents of your memory were wiped with your full reinitialization but i have noticed that every time i install an app i get the little pop up saying that the device is updating its library. this would explain why it would appear to grind to a halt when you install anything

the contents of my memory card did get wiped and i've noticed the less things in the internal memory the better. this is because archos did not partition the internal memory for the users the should have left maybe 2gb for the system and apps and the rest for us to use like what is on the galaxy s, that is what mae the device not lag.

I had the same issue. I had a photo app syncing online and it downloaded 30,000 thumbnails. That with the screwy "update multimedia library" really brought the 70IT to a halt. It would "sync" for about 1 hour leaving about 75% battery left.
I reinitialized and installed gapps4archos v5 with only the market and gmail (no voice or maps) and it's flying now. I wish I could disable the multimedia library sync permanently.

V6 SuperCharger for a laggy phone

I just want to know if anyone else is running this script. I refused to believe my Nexus S was not behaving, after all, it's a Nexus S! But, eventually even I had to get real. Truth is, lately, no matter what ROM I'm running after a few days things would slow down way too much. Lag, Launcher redraws, FCs due to lag. Things were too slow.
Anyway, I used the V6 SuperCharger script and it really has changed things. I used the MegaRAM option for 512 MB phones and I swear it has been a revelation. Even overclocking couldn't bring about this change. Currently, I'm on MIUI which most people consider to be a bit heavy and clunky. However, after supercharging with the MegaRAM option and Bulletproofing the launcher it's unstoppable! Highly recommended for those of you experiencing phone lag. Make sure to follow the Dev's instructions for using his script. All credit to user: zeppelinrox. Amazing stuff!
Which MegaRAM option did you select? I picked the second option, but I don't know which is better for Nexus S. So far I noticed browser is much much smoother now, other things has always been smooth for me, so I can't really tell the difference.
I used the 2nd MegaRAM option as well. But, I'm going to test out the first option. As I understand it, the more memory you want free in the 3rd slot the less multi tasking you can do (as this is where the secondary apps will be places)...I THINK!
As per that thread if 25 MB is good enough on a Milestone, a Nexus S should do well with 40 MB.
THIS from the thread:
zeppelinrox said:
Additional Info: You can find each app's priority and OOM.
....................... In AMM, Press Menu > Running Processes > Group by OOM grouping.
....................... Expand each group and see what apps are included and each app's priority level. (Higher numbers get killed first!)
....................... If you tap on an app, you can get additional info. Tip: Check and see what's included with android.process.acore
The default minfree values ("kill thresholds") for each OOM group are, as far as I can tell: 6, 8, 16, 20, 22 and 24 mb. (CyanogenMod 6.1.2)
This means that: when free memory lowers to 24 mb, EMPTY_APPS get killed; at 22 mb free ram, CONTENT_PROVIDER apps get killed; and so on...
Now, because the Milestone has only 256 mb of memory, I found these numbers too low, especially the 3rd one.
Basically, with those settings, you will usually be sitting with only 20 - 25 mb of ram.
Possibly less. Basically, it's the 3rd number (16) + 5. That's your free memory.
And my phone just chokes when it has that little ram available. Lag, home screen redrawing, the launcher getting killed.... ugh....
After extensive fiddling around, I've come to the conclusion that setting the third slot to about 25mb works great.
No home screen redraws while not being too aggressive on secondary/background apps while having about 30-35mb free all the time
BTW, free ram is not wasted. Android will use that memory to cache the file system and this speeds things up. See this informative post.

Just tested the 1st MegaRAM option and things are quite smooth. Launcher is not as buttery as with the 2nd option but, it's still great. The browser does quite well too, pinch to zoom is smooth but, scrolling is a little stuttery on a heavy page like Engadget's.

I didn't said anything against your script, just told the users to not use it on my custom ROM. A think that as maker of your script you should know - two RAM scripts on same ROM are doing only damage.
They don't stay running.
They execute and end.
Whichever one runs last is the one that sticks.
Many people were using juwe's script with the V6 script and things ran fine so it's not a big deal.
Of course, if somebody wanted to, they can delete the minfrees in any of their custom roms and plug them into supercharger...
Why do you guys like scaring the crap out of people for nothing? lol

I've seen this problem with the SIM/PIN lock on other ROMs. You might want to try disabling and re-enabling the SIM/PIN lock from settings. It should immediately ask for the PIN and reenable you Home key. What settings did you apply? Maybe they killed off your system guard.

Just an update on my settings. The MegaRAM seem to really speed everything up but, I find that they weren't being nice to my Whatsapp (I was missing messages now and then) I think Whatsapp would receive the message but get immediately killed before it could broadcast the notification. Once it even seemed to exit in app for no reason at all. So I switched to Balanced Settings 3 and so far Whatsapp as well as the launcher and phone in general has been very responsive.

I went for Megaram option 1 (I think). I disabled password and it then worked but by this time I had uninstalled the script. Any particular option you suggest? Cheers for the reply too.
It depends on your usage. I would suggest starting out with Balanced settings 3 and moving up or down the menu depending on whether you want more(down) or less speed(up). I've found that the trade off is speed vs multitasking. Though, I think zeppelinrox could confirm whether I'm right.

reasons why sense is slow and how to make it fast!

Everything I am posting on here is for a rooted g2 with the desire z hboot.
If you have a sense rom, you must experience the whole interface of sense. Once you do you will realize that they have made it to relate to every one. Which means that there is a lot of crap that you personally wont like. Because to relate to everyone there has to be many apps and widgets and wallpapers etc. that will relate to some but not to others. And if you have a g2/ desire z which I hope you do because this is what I am directing this to although this is good for other devices as well, you will know that you wont have much ram/ system space. Because these devices werent made to have sense 3.0 and 3.5 on it.
You have to look at your phone as being separated into a system and data partition.Basically everything that comes with your phone goes into the system partition. And when you download apps and set up your home screen preferences/how your phone gets set up that gets saved into the data partition. The g2/desire z has about 550 mbs in the system partition and about 1gb for the data partition. With a sense rom you will normally have about 80 mbs free in the system partition and about 850mbs free in the data partition. Now the reason they do this is so people can download as mant apps as they want. and they pretty much filled the system partition in sense for the roms on the devices that didnt come with it.
Ok now that you see how much sense takes in your system, and have played around with sense 3.0/3.5 and you can see some things that you dont use DELETE THEM!!! Use root explorer to do so. For an example I love the weather app but I dont really see a use for the videos lodged into your system. ( the videos that I am talking about are the videos that play when you open the weather app) I know that they are eye candy and know why that they are there to make it look cool but when you see that they are 30 mbs that you can delete.
Also there are many different apps that most developers put into the system that you can delete and download from the market. For an example The youtube app. If you delete that from the system/app file and then download it from the market, you get to have the app while putting it into the data partition. Which has a lot of space. And there are many apps that they usually put into the rom that are like this, like es file explorer, adobe reader and adobe flash, facebook and a couple others. The live wallpapers are a good thing to delete as well because they can make your sense experience unusable. And some of them (weather live wallpaper) take up 10mbs in system.
So once you do all of this you can have an amazing sense experience! I can most of the time end up with 180 mbs free in my system! That is 100mbs less than what I started with! The things that I listed were things that everyone no matter what preference you have can do! once you do that along with delete the things you dont use personally your phone will run very smooth. you will notice that your ram will be up to 120 mbs out of 368 free. at the most.
But once you open up your applications and start running things you will notice ram will get filled up
(obviously). So if you really want to keep the ram free you can run the supercharger script. Supercharger is a sort of memory manager that really makes a huge difference!!! I dont know exactly how it works but it keeps killing all of the things that you have running. you will have to set it up and read his guide on how to do it. Here is a link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18703418&postcount=5021 I like to set it to the most aggressive setting. That will make a huge difference and is all you have to do in order to get things perfect for your g2 with sense 3.5!
Thanks for reading! Let me know if I made myself clear and if this was interesting or useful! Oh and a thanks and any type of reply is much appreciated!
If anyone wants me to review any roms for them please let me know! I would love to show how things work in each rom if anyone tells me.

[Q] Greetings and a couple of questions

First of all I'd like to introduce myself, my name is Nemanja, I'm from Bosnia, 17 years old, been following the forums for a while now but never really had the need to register because I didn't have a Android Smartphone, but now I do, and it's the GT 540, so I am hoping for some good conversations and a lot of nice informations about this phone (already found some neat stuff). Greetings once more.
Now, to some questions.
1. I'm pretty pleased with the phones speed taking into consideration it's outdated, but I'm wondering are there any tweaks to make it a lil' bit or a lil' bit more faster?
2. When I got the phone from my friend, we did a Factory Reset to delete all of his accounts connected to the phone, but the Android Market doesn't work, it crashes right on startup, which sucks, is there a way of fixing this?
3. I want to upgrade to CM7 but I'm totally clueless if I should because the Volume (-) button is not responding, only the Volume (+) button is working, I don't know if that should be a problem because of fastboot, recovery or something like that.
That's all I have to ask now, maybe I'll remember something later on.
Cheers and thanks in advance! :fingers-crossed:

Well, compared to my 2.1 stock Eclair I have way more RAM when I kill apps, sometimes even up to 77MB but mostly around 55 - 60MB, battery life is kinda good, I really can't tell because I'm always listening to music and surfing the web, but the phone never froze on me.
Only issue I've come across is the Facebook app being way to slow, but when browsing facebook in the stock Browser it works like a charm. So far the ROM is excellent, no crashes, stable, fast, lots of options, standard root, I would recommend it any day!
About games and the swap thing, I'm new to the android world so I don't really know what swap actually does but I didn't download any games yet, so I can't give you an answer to that question

ok let me explain swap in a few words
Swap creates a file in ur sdcard, and uses the allocated space as memory.
swap files do inded decrease ur sdcard life, people say after 2 years of swapping sd card goes dead
another way to use swap
is to format ur sd card into 2 partitions, 1 fat 32 for ur files and the other for swap
basicly swap increases ur phone memory
back in the day i wanted to play dungeon defender on lg gt540 but it needed a phone with 512 ram, so i created a swap file with 450 mb and ran it no problems, altho it ws a bit over clocked not much over 700 otherwise its gonna fc on you or SOD, either way overlcocking reduces ur cpu life , one thing u can also do to improve graphics its 16 bit transparency, but it might get some glitches if it gets ''overflooded''
hope that helps
in sort, ur best option is
format sd card into 2 and make one part ur swap
overclock to 704mhz
16bit transparency
disable stuff on ur phone such as facebook google drive, task killes (use native) also dont use swift key or any other keyboard
