This has happened to me numerous times and i'm wondering if its a common issue:
You receive a call and you cant slide the slide the slider to accept the call for the life of you. A sew seconds later you get a dialog saying that the Dialer app is not responding; Force close /Wait.
This usually happens when you're trying to load a web page or playing a game. (anything processor intensive)
Is there a fix for this? Maybe set the priority of the dialer process higher if you have root ?

this happened a lot with G1... but never with Nexus One. I even watched movies or listened to music etc., and still the call will come through immediately.
I wonder how many apps you have installed, and how much memory you have left?
Cleaning up all unnecessary apps you never use + checking all automated services (such as feed readers, news/weather updaters, Email probers, etc. should be set to decent times (e.g. my news feed reader never loads news automatically, only on app start, weather updates every 4 hours, etc.)
I have a LOT of apps installed (around 180). Only about 20MB internal disk space left.
In fact I frequently need to uninstall apps to install new ones
I don t have a lot of apps running. Usually about 40-50MB RAM free.

WOW WOW WO
180 apps? How can you possibly make use of them all? I have 120 right now, and already feel it's too much (like... do we really ever use Google Goggles, or Finance?, or Wikitude, or... or...)
I have about 90MB internal disk space left, and I don't want to go much lower than that
But I guess what's killing you is that a lot of these apps, although maybe not running permanently, will wake up from time to time, to check your location, to update this or that, to do this or that....
I would try to reduce the number a lot and see whether the problem goes away, maybe say at 50MB internal space.
I always tell myself, even if it's cool to show off an app to a friend, if I don't really use it a lot or at all, I can delete it and always install it again if I want to - that's the beauty of the market (also paid apps remain paid, and can be redownloaded for free, unless you have refunded them).
hope it helps
another thing that could give you another 40MB, + using the second memory bank which is currently not in use on stock is to root the phone and flash cyanogen's CM 5.0 beta5 (or wait until it's out of beta).
That's maybe why I have 90 MB left at 120 apps, and you have only 20 MB left at 180 apps.
This would also provide more RAM, and you could run smoother with the number of apps open.
but just do the rooting if you really want to, as it voids warranty

Thanks for the advice. cyanogen's ROMs are very tempting, but looking at the changes it looks like it gets better every week. I think I'll wait for a bit before rooting and jump in at 5.0 FINAL.

Now I'm not trying to make this into a competition but I'm just trying to get an idea of how many apps people have installed. I want to get an idea what is a lot and what the average is.
I have 159 apps installed and they are installed in my SD card.
How about you?
PS... EASY WAY TO COUNT YOUR APPS IS BY USING ATRACKDOG AND ONCE ITS FINISHED SCANNING YOUR APPS CLICK ON "VERSION TRACKING" ON THE BOTTOM. NEXT PAGE SHOULD DISPLAY YOUR TOTAL NUMBER OF APPS.

i have apps on my sdcard to, got as high as 113 but went down to 40
I've got 139 installed here, but once the Market gets paying apps, I think I'll need to get a 16Gb sd card and increase the size of my ext2 partition.

What the heck do you guys have installed??? That's like having 9 pages of iPhone apps...and barely using them.
i use ALL of my apps (not including the 5 games i have) some of them are extentions to other apps like oi convert csv, and oi voice notes and tts.
i've installed about 5 apps and thats about it!
What are they

Err, quite a bit, actually. I have a wonderfully powerful computer (with phone, wifi, internet access, etc.) in the palm of my hand, and I want it to do whatever I need it to do within a few swipes and taps
Note:
No kittens where harmed during photoshopping of the middle image to protect the innocent
I have 73 apps installed but about 20 I really dont need that are just for fun like the Mr T sound board. I dont think I could ever get as high as some of you guys.
I didn't realize I had that many. I have 123 so far (didn't really look very carefully but I'm sure that includes some of the stock apps that came preinstalled). I don't even worry about space anymore now that all my apps are being ran through the SD.
Yikes.....
Erm.... thought more people would be closer to what I apparently have amassed --- well color me surprised.
I currently have 266 apps installed.
Here's a screenshot of aTrackDog - incidentally, is there any other way to display total # of apps??

Yes click on version tracking on atrackdog. It will show you there. I just put this in the main post too so people dont have to count 1 by 1.
40+ and all of them are on internal memory.
83 and growing
honestly guys i dont use many of the 83 apps i have but i do use almost 15 of them .
was just trying to see how many apps i can do on my sd card without feeling a little lag. have 1.1GB on EXT2 only 180MB is used and i dont think i can fill it. and by the way the phone is noticeably slowing down now. takes about 3 to 4 seconds to accept a call after i press it.
I actually use all the apps I've downloaded. I don't see any sense anything other than I need.
I tend to have 70-80mb free, I use task panel a bunch to kill all backgrounds apps once I get down to 40mb or so.
Need Help
I was about to make a new post asking for help for this...
I have a mytouch 3G.
When it was stock, the available ram varied from 20 to 30 MB.
At the moment I have Cyanogen 4.2.14.1, and my ram varies from 15 to 24 MB.
My info from system setting:
Baseband 62.50s.20.17u_2.22.19.26i
Kernel 2.6.29.6-cm42
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-4.2.14.1
Build DRC92
I thought this was supposed to speed it up, and not slow it down. Moment it drops down less then 22 MB, it slows down considerably.
The rebooting time is very high, and the only Widget I am using is Power Control. I would like to use calendar, and Retro Clock and weather or something, but cant even think of it, due to how slow it is.
I am using App2SD, and so I was wondering if anyone help me out and give me directions as to my next action.....
Thanks,

People;
Android is NOT Windows.
This means Android is supposed to use as much RAM as possible because Android is Linux-Kernel based, meaning Android properly and correctly handles RAM. It uses as much RAM as possible so every program that is running runs faster, it does not mean the phone is slowing down with less RAM. You guys have to get it out of your head.

Thank you very much for your insight.... Please tell me how much RAM do you have left when you are running your system?
Yes low RAM does not mean that phone is slowing down.. but when at 19MB you start noticing your keyboard doesnt act properly, you are not able to open apps at the same speed that you were before when it was 25 MB... I believe that means its slowing down....
Or maybe I am just assuming things.....

I have 28MB of RAM left on average and that is with these running:
- Facebook App
- AK Notepad
- Browser
- Alarm
- Footprints
- Gmail
- Google Maps
- IM
- Mail
- Peep
- NetCount
- Stocks
- Weather
- People Widget
- And a few more.
The keyboard does lag sometimes but it's due to Android catching up and removing an app from RAM I believe. That's when it speeds up a bit.
See Right there is the issue,
You have 28MB ram with so many things running.
I have 21 mb Ram with
Power Widget
Messaging
Gmail
and Ebuddy running
Hence the reason why I was questioning this, and if I need to do anything to correct this.
I wasnt looking for 40MB ram or anything. I would just like it to run good with a few more things.
Moment I opened up Google Maps with the above, my Ram dropped to 18 MB and it slowed down that I could not even add the TO location for a while...
So again I ask, if I desire to reinstall the ROM etc, would someone please help me out with the steps, or direct me to it. Keeping in mind that I have App2SD. I would rather use another method then reinstalling the ROM.
Currently using Cyanogen 4.2.14.1 with Cyanogen latest recovery image.
Thank you

Even with all those things running, if I don't need my data enabled, I disable it. When you open Google Maps it tires to find your location, download map data and upload data. Even though mine is running, when I'm done with it I disable my data so none of my apps can slow down my phone by downloading/uploading.
I'm curious about this too if anyone could help, my phone seems to run really slow and often only shows around 25 megs free.

Check if you have a 32A or 32B board first by going to the boot menu (Power + Back); if you have 32B then there is a reason why it's running so slow -- you have 50% less RAM overall then the 32A boards.
If you have 32A then disable GPS, data, bluetooth, anything after you are done using applications on your phone. Remember that applications run in the background and that means they actually still use all your wireless communications. Since your phone is receiving and sending out data it tends to slow down and feel sluggish.
If it still feels slow or you don't feel like turning off your wireless communications then use a task killer. Make sure to ignore ANY application that does not use wireless communications (ie, Clock, Alarm, HTC sense, Touch Input) and once you are done using an application like Gmail, you can go into task killer and kill the task. Just make sure not to use the widget because now the task killer application is running all the time in the background, monitoring your whole phone, it will drain the battery a bit faster.
I purchased the new MyTouch 3G 1.2 last Monday and installed approximately 60 apps on it and my available memory is at 235! And I must say the battery lasts me a full day with all everything on and heavy usage! I'm diggin' this new purchase!

Installing and running are 2 different things. Installing an app does not mean it is running in the background and using memory.
I'm also surprised that you have that much available memory with heavy usage because that seems impossible if you are opening many apps. You are looking either at false info or not reading the information correctly.

That is not RAM -- that is the amount of space available to install updates/applications on initial phone STORAGE.
This topic is about phone MEMORY. You can only view it with a third-party application from the market.
You read the information wrong and you posted something that is irrelevant.

In short -- yes.
The 32B board has 192MB of RAM compared to the 288MB a 32A board has so you can expect the phone to run a bit slower.

What in particular is slow?
If scrolling home screens is slow, or icons are taking time to show up (or refresh) try a different launcher than the default. Popular ones lately have been Go Launcher, ADW.Launcher, and Zeam.
Are you using the most recent firmware update? (2.0.71 has sped the systems up quite a bit from the older versions)
http://www.archos.com/support/support_tech/updates.html?country=us&lang=en&#firm
Are you using an SD card? (If so try adding a file named .nomedia to the card to reduce the gallery from spending time scanning).
Did you install Google Voice? (If not, you should refrain from it since, it is dragging down a lot of systems).
What speed (in settings) do you have your processor set to run. (The most responsive is the Overdrive setting).
If you want to know how to speed your system up you'll need to tell us what is slow about it.
The overall system is getting really unresponsive and what bugs me the most is when I try to install any app through .apk the device fails on me and freezes. Basically when I try to instal any app it freezez when I try to use an app it freezes most of the time
I am using the latest update with the middle setting for power but overdrive doesn't make a big difference. I am running adw launcher which helped and is really good compared to the stock launcher.
The device freezes a lot and thats not because of me having a lot of apps when I get home I will try reinstalling the update keeping the device on overdrive for a long time and will report back

i would do a reset. it really is not as bad as it sounds.
market will tie your purchases to your account, just power off, hold vol-down and power up. choose reset, and then reset device( i do & storage). make sure firmware is 2.0.71, and install gapps5. then just watch what you install, and uninstall things you don't use.
Yeah, it sounds like you need to do a full reinitialization and then reinstall the newest firmware.
My A70 was literally not usable after I tried to upgrade. It was freezing every minute. After a reinstall, everything works great.
And don't forget to set your CPU to overdrive. Really doesn't affect battery too much, and the speed is noticeable.
I turned off the animated live wallpaper. Made my 101 noticable faster.
Deinstall VoiceSearch
You should deinstall the updates of VoiceSearch ....
thanks guys I did a full reinitiolization (not sure bout spelling) and now it is working better, i chose not to install the market and just use applanet for what i want to download, working good now but we'll see how it ends up after a few days of use.
thanks guys you were really helpfull.
dont know if the contents of your memory were wiped with your full reinitialization but i have noticed that every time i install an app i get the little pop up saying that the device is updating its library. this would explain why it would appear to grind to a halt when you install anything

the contents of my memory card did get wiped and i've noticed the less things in the internal memory the better. this is because archos did not partition the internal memory for the users the should have left maybe 2gb for the system and apps and the rest for us to use like what is on the galaxy s, that is what mae the device not lag.

I had the same issue. I had a photo app syncing online and it downloaded 30,000 thumbnails. That with the screwy "update multimedia library" really brought the 70IT to a halt. It would "sync" for about 1 hour leaving about 75% battery left.
I reinitialized and installed gapps4archos v5 with only the market and gmail (no voice or maps) and it's flying now. I wish I could disable the multimedia library sync permanently.
Hi all,
I've had this phone for a few days now and love it. However I find I have very little RAM available.
I have on average around 30-40mb of ram available and the phone sometimes slows down quite a bit. I've ad a look at the running apps and the main culprit was SPB Shell launcher which was using around 50mb. I have since stopped using this but I am still only getting around 40-50mb remaining (with timescape disabled) and again a sluggish phone at times.
How is everyone else's?
I am thinking of doing a factory reset and start afresh to see what app may be causing the problem.
Any other suggestions or is this normal with this phone?
Thanks for your replies.
I have the same. I thought it was down to having over a thousand contacts all duplicated in exchange and google.
I have 130m of internal space available. Is there any way of re assigning it as you can in windows mobile?

My Average Free ram @150 MB
135 - 140ΜΒ here.
Have been checking with Advanced Task Killer (ofcourse NOT automatically set to kill everything, but fully manually every now and then), and noticed that there were times when the phone just left plenty of unnecessary apps wondering around in the background. Apps that are not the "always-on" by android system. So I kill EVERYTHING else except from:
1) Clock
2) TrackID
3) LiveWare
4) Media Sharing
5) Maps
6) Hanashi (WTF is that?!? it ALWAYS comes back by system.)
7) Setup wizard
(What remains always active by system also depends on the widgets you have, e.g. I have TrackID widget, you might not have it, so you wont need it.)
and have even noticed better battery performance...
EG, during nightime, I left the phone untouched (not used ATK), and when I woke up, I had a 12-13% battery drop, while the other day, after a fresh cleaning before sleeping, got around 4-5% drop. Both times with same conditions...
I have about 140 free and nerver under 100

Yeah I have about 150mb free.
And can I say coming from the x10, this phone is rediculously smooth. I love it!
Can we expect more free RAM once it's rooted/a custom fw is available?
This obsession about RAM needs to stop!!!!! 2.3 manages memory very well and you shouldn't be having any issues with the phone, unless you start messing with it (task killing the wrong things for example).. My phone is running really smoothly.

The reason I asked is that my phone does not run smoothly at times but very laggy and some items (contacts, emails etc) can take an age to load (well not an age but seconds but it feels like an age )
I was just wondering if this was the norm or not.

Yeap, 2.3 handles RAM almos perfectly. EG, if you open as many apps as you want and just leave them in the background, when you try to launch a HUGE game (eg Asphalt 6), the system will free as much RAM as required for the game to run smoothly.
BUT, I have noticed that some apps are left idle without me usng them (and without being system triggered apps, which when closed, are not resprang), and are not automatically closed by system. I tested leaving overnight the phone without killing anything after a days usage (with more than 15 apps in the background), and while being at 15% when left at night (around 01:00 am), it was off in the morning (7:30 am).
Then I did a fresh reset to the device, noticed what apps are automatically opened by system, and protected them (unchecked them) from Advanced Task Killer (which was set to manual), so that it will not shut them down when I click the "kill all" button. Next night, I killed all non-system apps (that do not restart if you do no action), and left the phone overnight again to see if there is any difference. Battery dropped around 5%.
I did this twice under same conditions (same time gap, BT open etc.), and results were almost the same +/- 2%.
So IMHO, if you use a task killer app wisely, you could manage to get better battery performance when the phone is idle, but you will NOT get better performance (smoother UI etc.)
Again, all these IMHO.
@dragunov - completely agree with everything you're saying.. it's the difference between knowing what you're doing and blindly killing tasks because someone said it helps!!!
for the OP - would suggest figuring out what it is you've got running that's causing the lag cos it's not the phone hardware/ OS that's at fault - This is the only drawback of Android vs iPhone -the QA of the apps on the market doesn't pick up this sort of problem.

Thanks, thats what I intend to do. A factory reset and the re-install gradually my apps to see which ones are the problems.
When I first got the phone I loaded it up with apps so it will now be difficult to retrace so a fresh start is what I will do.
A quick update. I have done a factory reset and although the phone is smoother I still only have 40-50mb free (only app I installed was swype).
Can I just ask what free ram other users have?
Thanks
Right now.. 60Mb.
I had about 150 out of the box while taskkiller always said about 5 apps running background (not installed by me).
Now yesterday my arc froze while browsing the web and rebootet itself (screen was scary, single pixles loosing light while some were still on till everything was off).
Now that was the only time the arc did that and afterwards task killer now (after killing apps) only shows 2 or 3 apps running background and up to 195MB free RAM which is cool but scary at the same time ...
Still can recieve phone calls though and everything works ... well Im happy for more RAM
Oh yeah, got swype on my whitelist.
Honestly I don't understand the need for more ram?
having 60mb is similar to having 200mb, it's all about applications reserving their spots, once they needed they'll kick in, otherwise they stay idle ( talking about system apps and well developed applications )
even if you have 60mb you still can run games that require 100mb... smoothly
the lag some face is due to background application using the processor
I usese autokiller memory optimizer. See unlike the other appear that kill everything, autokiller mo just optimizes the Android system so you wont have to go hunting for those apps.

having 60mb is similar to having 200mb, it's all about applications reserving their spots, once they needed they'll kick in, otherwise they stay idle ( talking about system apps and well developed applications )
even if you have 60mb you still can run games that require 100mb... smoothly
the lag some face is due to background application using the processor

Doesn't matter how many times we say it people just won't get it!!..
Spare memory is WASTED memory.. this is ANDROID/ Linux.. this is NOT MS Windows... it's DIFFERENT!!
I looked at my free RAM and out of 1 GB I only have around 350 mb free!
That and I disabled ALL widgets!
I looked at running apps with advanced task manager and there is all of this crapware like Pulse etc running. I cleared memory and got some back but not much. As soon as I turn the tab back on all of the junk comes back and drains my battery 10% overnight with wifi OFF on a wifi only tab.
It is ridiculous to only have less than half of my RAM available. On my phone I lost half of that to bloat too. I bet if this tab had 2GB of RAM they would fill 1.75 GB with crap.
What gives? Why do they insist on doing this and not letting ME choose what I want running on MY tablet? Can I get rid of or freeze all of this junk?
They are just cached and automatically freed up when an application needs more RAM. But I do agree that Andriod does a very aggressive caching even on apps never used. Why not remove it with TB?
Free ram has no purpose. It will take and free RAM as it sees fit. If you force it to use less ran, it will run slower. Let it manage the ram itself, this is how Unix has worked since the start and it's working perfectly fine.

+ 1 on this. It's seriously easy to get a bit neurotic about system resources. If your tab is running fine just enjoy it and don't sweat the numbers.

Yeah but I don't need Pulse, buddies now, family locator, Samsung game hub blah blah running and eating up CPU and battery either (as well as internal flash memory). I will never use that crap so I might as well get it gone. I am not sure why it opens stuff up that I never use or never have.
Is there a list somewhere on what can be nixed and what can't?
I would like to bring this thread up again.
I do have the same problem as DaveC1964.
All I want is a "clean looking" tablet without Google+, Pulse, SocialHub,GameHub etc.
I also hate that those apps connect to the web. I know you can disable that, but I want them gone.
I only use the internet browser, youtube and pdf app.
How do I uninstall those preinstalled annoyences?
Is there a way to do this without a custom ROM?
Thank you
you'll need to root your tab and use titanium back to remove the bloatware. be careful with what you remove though as it may affect other apps. always make a backup.

Best you initially just freeze the offending apps with Titanium Backup instead of uninstalling/deleting them right away - that way you can always re-enable them if your system should become unstable or start acting up.

As long as you do not run the apps and dosen't setup accounts they are not accessing the web i think.
I love Pulse!
Thank you for your answers.
I am going to root my tab and use titanium backup afterwards.
Startup Manager
you can easily sort out all the bloatware, unneeded startup apps and make your tab fast I've tested it does a great job
