what are the advantages/disadvantages of wm2003 / wm6.1? which one is much better? coz for me, wm 6.1 is really nice but i miss the storage memory on wm3..so i'm thinking of downgrading to wm3...so i would like your opinion about the 2 roms/versions..
I have the same dilemma, wm 6 is slower but much nicer... I don't know many other advantages...
advantage of WM6 is that there are a lot of cool new third party applications available for WM6 while 2003 has a few really old ones and not many new ones being released anymore.
hmmm....how about WM5 then?
I forgot the most important difference between 2003 and WM5 and 6. Persistent memory. Meaning if you run out of power your data will not be erased in WM5 and WM6. Between 5 and 6.1 the most obvious difference would be threaded SMS.

ok..what i only like w/ 2003 is the storage capacity..it's far more better than wm6.1 but i could live with that..
WM 6
Hi i bought my first htc himalaya (02 XDA II) off ebay for 80 quid two months ago and it was running wm2003. Cause im only 12 i thought it would be great but i was let down by the interface and there wasnt much on it. So i decided to do some research on later versions of wm. And found that on 6 there are a lot more things on offer. So i said "sod it im gona update the system" and i did twice with diffrent versions and found the one i liked. Since then i have played COD 2 on it with NO LAG! So i think it is THE best!

Will I be able to upgrade XDA's 2002 Version to 2003 when it's released in the next months ? :?:
No, at least not likely. Rumour has it that the new OS requires more than 32Mb of ROM. That is why the iPaq 3970 and 5450 (and a few others) carry 48Mb ROM.
Would we not be able to do a limited upgrade AKA the 3630 ipaq upgrade to 2002 and maybe add a few apps into ram ??
I hope so.
maybe also we can increase ROM size? does hardware supports this? As I know, RAM upgradeable on all MDAs/XDAs to 64Mb (and maybe more? I seen info but don't know how)
So if we'll got 48 or 64 of flash rom we can upgrade. But what 2003 system is will be? Can you give some infos about it?
Pocket PC 2003, codename Ozone, will primarily be a bug-fix release for Pocket PC 2002 with few enhancements. Users should not expect big changes.
Well i agree you may not notice many deffrence or changes but i was assured from people at Microsoft that majore changes within the OS will take place. I am not sure if they will ever be able the fix the bugs GOD knows each day we discover tonnes...
Anyways we should wait and see
Why wouldn't it be possible to upgrade?
The amount of build-in ROM shouldnt be that much of a problem. Since PPC 2003 PE mainly features bugfixes that total size of the OS shouldn't have increased that much. Else it would be possible to install some application is RAM like they did for the iPAQ 36xx.
The only real reason I can think of is the lack of support from O2 and the other telco's that sell these devices.
Keep hoping!
Kamil
I think it is very possible to see XDA can upgrade to PPC 2003 phone edition, however the upgrade may not be free. I look forword to upgrade my T-Mobile MDA with a PPC 2003 O2 English ROM  .
Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition
More About Pocket PC 2003
Microsoft recently gave developers an overview of the next version of its Pocket PC operating system. Codename Ozone, this will primarily be a bug-fix release for Pocket PC 2002 with a few enhancements.
Developers will have access to new tools to allow them to build applications that take fuller advantage of the XScale processors found in most of today's handhelds. However, these applications will not run under Pocket PC 2002. Of course, the reverse is not true, as Pocket PC 2003 will retain backward compatibility.
Microsoft has decided to postpone adding other new features, such as voiced control, until a .NET version of Pocket PC is completed -- expected in two to three years.
it will be possible to upgrade the 3870 too ...and it has the same amount of rom ...if i'm not wrong ...
Er... according to Microsoft sources, pocket PC 2003 phone edition runs on Windows CE 4.2 - this is more than a bug fix release!
2003
does anyone have a copy of the BETA version floating around?
IT works fine
I have hacked to HTC phone, parts are SX56 and parts are XDA, but I am running 2003 fine on it right now. There seems to be all sorts of little things, and some of the skins are much prettier, but other than that I don't notice anything huge.
Yeah, I am running Palm OS 6 in my reconstruted XDA with 256M ram and Amd Opteron processor too. It is extermely fast, as fast as my Desktop computer.
hehe

YESSSS!!!
xda with PocketPC2003 is a reality! At least one such device was received by local pda-related software company for review. I have no details about current devices upgrade availability, though.
The only fact is: PocketPC2003 for xda exists and should be pre-installed to new devices after OS will be presented by Microsoft.
I have it on good authority that it is feasible to put PC2003 onto Xda, however this will only happen for evaluation purposes and is unlikely to be available as a general upgrade.
Hi all!
I have a basicaly question, what is the benefit for xdaI upgrade to WM2003? :?:
If I have a way xda SD port upgrade to SD IO support, I really want to use WM2003 and I will enjoy bluetooth/WiFi through SD IO optional product.
Anybody please tell me, Can I cange SD port upgrade to SD IO support? How difficult to do so? How much I have to pay?
Thank you for all
No upgrade to sdio. You can try the upgrade, if you dont like it just restore your original rom.
sdio cant be added to the xda1 at least not using software
maybe if one could find a sdio chip to replace the sd reader chip which have the same connectors and solver it on
and reprogram the whole rom but i doubt it
from 2002 to 2003 on xda1 is little to be gained from imho
sure some programs need 2003 to run
but many programs made for 2002 dont run on 2003
i did the upgrade yesterday
WM2003
Reason's to upgrade:
1) Read this link: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,16788
2) GPRS is faster. The TMO RS6.24.01 that comes with the RUU4.01.00 support GRPS class 8 (4R1T) & 10 (3R2T). That receive & transmit GSM channels.
3) All PPC2002 program works with WM2003 ! In fact, most programs will work better work WM2003. CE4.2 is far more stable, less buggy than CE3.0 in PPC2002. Point taken, Vindigo crashed all the time on PPC2002 but runs crash free on WM2003. Per the link above, WM2003 (CE4.2) was written for the StrongARM processor which is what PPC2002 was too. Intel's XScale processor is compatible with SA but the Microsoft CE4.2 code is not optimized for XScale. You'll see some metrics run faster on a 205MHz SA than 400MHz XScale.
I just got a iMate XDA2 (400MHz XScale) and I don't notice a performance improvement on the same applications I ran on my 205MHz SA XDA1.
If you do upgrade to TMO ROM4.01.00, RS6.24.01, it will be with an .exe file that upgrades both ROM & RS. Get yourself a SD card reader/writer (~$20) & a spare 64M SD card in case the upgrade screws up, then you use the Wallaby bootloader to do the install via the SD card.
Best of luck

well unless he use the US gsm system 900/1900 then upgrading to that radio stack would be a very very very bad idea

well there are many many applications which dont! work on wm2003 but does on 2002
i could find many examples of this here is just one before version 1.6 this program did not work on 2003
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/todaysinfo.shtml
and just searching this forum give many results of people finding programs which dont work on 2003
and they having to pay for new versions of programs to get it to run on 2003

Understand. I had Lotus EasySync Pro with PPC2002 but did not work with WM2003. Needed an upgrade which they would charge full price. No upgrade policy at Lotus. Screw em. So I went with CommonTime mNotes (Cadenza) for my sync software.
Yes there can be cases, especially with the word "freeware" that could bite you. WM2003 uses the registry completely now whereas PPC2002 didn't use muchof the registry. Apps could install and work without registry entrys. Those app's types probably will bite you.
Thanks for the clarification and feedback.
I have the SX56 and waiting for the hopeful WM2003 official upgrade through Siemens. I don't want to take chances cooking my own ROM.
I've read this thread with interest with regard to the worth of upgrading.
I know there are issues with programs that don't work, and I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I will be eager to use Microsoft voice command.
The last I heard, the latest tentative date for the official Siemens release is supposed to be by Monday, but who knows? (I read this on another forum, so I am not stating this as fact at all!)
Thank you for all reply
I understood I can not change to SD IO suport basicaly
So I have to re-investigate for upgrade to WM2003 now.
I think ROM upgrade is a very risky work for me.
many thanks all of reply again
Hi all... does anyone know about T-Mobile UK, and if they about to release upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.0?
My current Windows is way too slow, a friend upgraded his same phone with a 6.0 version he found on the net (illegal version I guess) but it looks fantastic, and is way faster than the previous.
Thanks!
I work for TMUK & have checked this (as I have a vario II myself!). There are no plans to release an official WM6 upgrade, the focus is on the new WM6 devices (touch & vario 3).
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

there is what appears to be a beta tmobile wm6 rom about (you can find links to it in the Hermes Mobile 6 forum), which is very good indeed. Apparently tmo aren't going to release it though, but tmo uk's whole treatment of htc devices seems to be a bit random anyway, so you never know.
I went to the T-mobile store (Uk) and asked about the upgrade. He said should be no problem downloading WM6 from Windows website, and should not worry with warranty as Im already over the 12 month warranty period. Ive been everywhere on Microsoft's website, but cant find any download! (???) Besides would that cause probs as the phone is locked to T-Mobile?
Anyone help here, please. Im not an expert (Im bit fed up to how slow WM5 compared having a 400mhz processor!)
you could either look on here for the htc original hermes rom, the t-mobile test rom, they are both for wm6, infact any rom in the hermes forum works superbly.
Sorry to ask stuipid questions, but what bennifits will i see if i upgrade to WM6 from WM5? My hermes seems to be running pretty well with WM5 but maybe im missing something.
Thanks
There's a whole forum for WM6 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=355 )discussion and tons of info to cover all of the above. If you want to know about the different ROm's pluses, minuses etc read the stickies. Still, why anyone would want a TMo ROM is beyond me, loads of extra stuff you never use and a dial pad in PINK...
wm6, no real difference
i just thought I would add to this thread and say that there arent any real major differences in windows mobile 5 & 6, the email is the only big advantage in that outlook can display html messages but, in good old microsoft design, you have to upgrade the server side of things (ie, exchange 2003 to exchange 2007).
Mail2web (which i use for push email) only uses exchange 2003 so you still get your emails in plain text.
Microsoft did a good job of dressing up windows mobile 6 as something its not but, having said that the hermes and its software beats sloppy nokia's and sony ericssons hands down!
Hi,
yesterday I was reading about putting new WM 6.1 on my 614c. After reading all day long other ppl experience about WM6.1 on their devices I decided to put it too….
The main reason I put it it was when I saw this link: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/meet/wm61-faq.mspx . (I don’t like 3th parity appz so my PDA can “look” different).
After WM was done installing on my PDA I was a bit puzzled. My today screen is/was looking the same like on WM6.
So is there by any chance something I’m missing here or theirs no such feature on our beloved devices?!?
TNX
Btw I have iPAQ 614c ROM WM6.1 CE OS 5.2.20757 (Build 20757.1.4.0).
Hm... yes, you seem to have confused the home screen on Windows Mobile Standard with the one on Professional. WM 6.1 Pro's home screen is exactly like the one on WM6.
If you're really against 3rd "parity" plugins, I hope you're ready to wait until Q2 2009 - that's supposedly when WM 7 will be out.
That’s odd a bit.
Coz I taught it was like in Vista case. Vista Ultimate has all the features it’s up to the user which one he will use and which one not.
So from my point of view WM Standard has better GUI than WM Professional.
But nwm I will wait…
BTW tnx 4 answer and keep up the good work.
I have a Pro 2 and on January 20th, T-mobile will have the upgrade from WM 6.1 to 6.5. I've only had this phone for a month but have been using and programming iPhones for 4 years. There is always problems upgrading the iPhone, this includes apps that just won't work after. Could this happen if I upgrade the Pro 2? I have the phone now working better then my iPhones. I have every app I had on the iPhone that I need and I now even have flash thru Skyfire. Is this upgrade (given by my carrier) going to give me problems? Will the upgrade be that much better? I'm worried.
Let me know at [email protected]
John C
If you installed the apps on your main memory, then you will have to install them again, .. and every tweak you did on the main memory than you have to re-do it
in terms of applications compatibility there are no known issues (to my knowledge) in upgrading from WM6.1 to WM6.5
I would think you would need worry about which TF3D you have, and which one you will have after upgrading. That could throw a wrench in your themes.
