[THE] Decent sounds from pro designer - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hey there,
I work in film music and film sound design.
I've made some non-grating, non repetitive sounds for various wm phones.
Updates on the way - i'll also come up with some sounds on request if there are enough.
These are 'pop and fizz' based, fun and soft sounds. They'll add a friendly edge to your phone.
I reccommend:
POP-mono = new TEXT msg
PUP-mono = new EMAIL
pap-mono = activesync - begin sync
pip-mono = beam : autorecieve
pip-mono = IM : new instant message
I'm not doing ringtones, as I'm sure you all have your own preferences.
Tom

unzip them into your my documents folder

I think they may not be heard in a loud place and they are quite short..
But thanks though, nice idea !!!

Nice... I like these. Audible, short, & and unintrusive.
Thanks!

Alt SMS tones ..

Anyone got an old SMS tone - like the old Nokia phones have ?
Cheers
Mark
You mean the 'beep-beep, beep-beep' one? If so I think I might have a midi of it somewhere...

Yep - that's the one.
Would be grateful if you have !

Could easily make your own with e.g. Audacity...
Generate > Tone...
Waveform: Sine
Frequency: 1750Hz
Amplitude: 1.0
Length: 0.1s
End key
Generate > Silence...
Length: 0.1s
End Key
Generate > Tone...
( Next bit is if you use a repeating sound for text messages only. )
Generate > Silence...
Length: 0.5s
Hold shift and press the play button for repeat play
beep-beep .. beep-beep .. beep-beep
Obviously you can easily change the tone of the beeps, the pause between the two, the pause before playing again, and the volume, by just varying any of the above.
File > Export as WAV...
beepbeep.wav
Copy "beepbeep.wav" to your PocketPC's Windows folder.
You can now pick it as the tone for your incoming text messages.
One note of warning - these simple sine waves play back very well on the tiny speakers, so expect them to be quite *loud*.
Further notes: you can probably use lower sampling rates/bits, and even save as an mp3.
Result of the above steps is attached.
Mark, try this one. Took the original Nokia 'Message' tone and converted it to .wav. Then ran it through Audacity (thanks for the walkthrough, ZeBoxx, very useful) to up the volume a little and tweak the speed.
Sounds pretty good IMHO and is now my text message tone of choice. Hope it's what you were looking for too.
Cheers
PS I know it's too big but I don't have enough skill to reduce it, sorry. ZeBoxx???
Alt SMS Tone
I use the attached intel ditty, seems a good one for SMS and no-one else uses it
Until now !!! but I know we users are a select bunch, so no worries
Hays
Here's the morse code type one, using Audacity.
These "classic" tones are great. Does anyone know of a site that might have more?
I'd be particularly interested in .imy tones from Motorola phones. They're kind of like midi files in that they only contain musical notes rather than digital sound.
Cheers Guys - mucho appreciated
These are just what I need - plain & simple (and also loud) tones.
Thanks
Mark

Pretty easy
Click on the down arrow next to the Message2 track title
pick "Split Stereo Track"
close one of them ([X] button on the left of the track)
Click on the down arrow next to the Message2 track title again
Pick "Mono"
Size is cut in half now
Then select the bunch of silence at the end - WM5 doesn't repeat the SMS sound ('repeat' option is disabled), so there's no use in that pause being there..
..therefore, hit Del.
Now save again, and you should get pretty much the attached file.
Audacity is really great for this - you can easily add tremolo/echo/fades/etc. and get nice and clear, loud (due to the simple wave form), distinctive tones.
Of course it's not as 'hip' ( do they say that anymore ? ) as the latest $5 RealTone from Jamster!, but I say: screw that.

I thought it was pretty good fun . But as I say I don't think the missus was too impressed. I'll get some more samples from youtube and add them in. (Thanks for the link jameslovell)
I really want "Say what you see" and "its good but its not right".
I think half the problem of programming in my own time is thinking of apps to write!
looking forward to the extra sounds!
more Catchphrase sounds (+others)

Yeah i had a look at those, they dont sound right though. Sounds like it isnt roy.
Nice
would it be possible to extend this app to allow users to create and choose soundschemes?
There used to be one on the smartphone which was a great laugh
http://www.modaco.com/content/smartphone-software-applications/117105/spvnoisebox-updated-03-12-v0-9-2b/
I'd be happy to make some themes to share
Sound Effects, Drum Machine, Sirens, Excuses, Ventriloquism
Yeh totally, i will have a proper look into when I get time (hopefully this weekend).
Sounds like a plan, set of audio files and a configuration file with them. I'll get on it!
Interesting app you posted a link to, does it only work on smartphones then?

I have just recently received a shiny new HTC Diamond Touch, after a day or so of having it I thought it was time to create an application. This is what the few minutes during my lunch break at work came up with.
A Catch Phrase sound board! Only 4 samples unfortunately, you wouldn't believe how hard these audio samples are to find.
I can't believe how much fun I have had clicking the Wrong buzzer whenever my girlfriend asks me a question!
Enjoy, the start of many applications to come I hope.

Any screenshots?
No screenshots for the moment as the old application was just a test, hacked together in a lunch break.
I am working on a much improved version, all is going well and I should release something this week or this weekend. Unfortunately my free time is lacking at the moment.
The new app will be completely configurable and provide the ability for user created content in the form of button and image themes... all will be explained when I release it.
Thanks.
looking forward to it!!!

Take your time of course and glad it's on the way. Thanks for your time and hard work as always.
I don't understand how this will work, or is it rom dependant? I can't play any sound when I'm on the phone. Tried the app, but can't hear anything. Same with wmp and tf3d player.

It runs but will only play sounds on the d-pad, other sounds were assigned to the keypad.
Touchscreen is so much better ! and the vga resolution deserves to be used to full effect.

Excellent news
No need to rush it, I presume you mean we can change the sounds, not just the buttons and images for Roy
I'm looking forward to it.
Many thanks
Some thoughts ...
It would be really nice to use animated gifs as buttons, that appear to 'play' when activated.
Perhaps it could use the g-sensor a bit like the lightsaber toy - assigning your own sound to a 'shake'.
during a call, could you shake the phone to play a sound that the caller would hear ?
"... must go, there's somebody at the door." <SHAKE>
! DING DONG !
Hi,
Is it possible for someone to supply the Buzzer sound as a wav or MP3 File. My Girlfriend has been using my phone, found this damn program on it, and after several hours of messing with it, now wants the buzzer sound as her message alert tone.
Ive searched the internet where i can, and cant find it. If anyone has it or it can be extracted from the program, or be supplied by the creator, i would be very grateful!
Sean Saunders
Sure here are the sounds
Sorry for the late reply.

Cowboy Bebop (anime from like 6 years ago) has a great opening theme song called "Tank" (I forget who it's by). It's energetic, and I think most would enjoy it.

Pixies - Isla de Encanta
Currently just using a generic 'ringing phone' tone.
But I have in the past used, variously, all of the following:
Hell is for Heroes - I Can Climb Mountains
Modest Mouse - Float On
Pixies - Gigantic
AC/DC - Thunderstruck
Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
Led Zeppelin - Trampled Underfoot
A cut-down version of Fleetwood Mac - The Chain (yeah, you know the bit I'm talking about...)
Interpol - Evil
Star Wars theme.
Theme from the TV show 'Alias'
The Who - Who are ya!
I've ripped the end music from Let Down - Radiohead- Ok Computer.
Such an awesome piece of music for a ringtone.

I use 'Star Wars - Imperial March' for my wife!! and 'Yoda - Message from the Dark Side there is' for received sms

Queries of a Newbie!

Am new to Windows Mobile and would really appreciate if someone could answer atleast some of my doubts.
1) The speakers ... is that the loudest we can go? I have a P1i that I tweaked thanks to Swmail and its like real loud!
2) Most decent Nokia have a feature that when a call is received "speaks out" the caller name from the address book. Do we have a similar option in Xperia/ Windows Mobile?
3) When I receive a call, the callers name is almost invisible ... I mean its so small that a person like me having below average vision has trouble figuring out the caller's name! Is there no in built tweak to rectify this problem?
4) I have downloaded and installed the MyLostBlog HTC Calculator.cab ... why are all the backgrounds black for most softwares around here??? Is it not possible to adjust colours to go with the theme? I mean, can I just not install any software and the theme gives the software the looks?
Having got the Xperia, I'm now in a stage where I have to learn the OS fresh ... feels uncomfortable with all the small fonts and buttons. I'm now wondering if this was a mistake and if I should give up so soon or work my way into comfort zone!
Your advises and help will help me hang on!
Cheers!
1 - I'm sorry, but this was a mistake by SE. The speaker is awful, but there is nothing you can do about it. I wish we had stereo speakers on par with the N95 too. When I use it for video or audio, I always put my headphones. I don't see a problem about it. The only irritating thing is that you won't be able to hear the ringtome, but that is what vibration is for right?
2 - There are many programs that do this. I haven't tested them, because I find the feature annoying. Do it on your own risk:
Voice Call
Phone Tray Free
Ascendis Caller ID
Audio Caller ID
and many more. Just use google .
3 - You need a program like SPB Phone Suit or PhoneEx 1.3 (the one I'm using). PhoneEx is great. Big names and numbers. It is very finger friendly.
4 - Because black = cool. After all everyone wants to be Mr. Black (10 points to whoever caught the reference ). Anyways, HTC devices are black and the Xperia most people have is black, so people make programs with black fonts.
And no, the theme cannot change the colours of the programs that you install.
You say that you are a new WinMo user. Well, that means that you have to read and learn a lot of things. No way around that. WinMo is not intuitive. It is not like most of the smartphones or featurephones with their flashy, but often useless oparating systems. It is annoying at the beggining, but when you learn how it works and get the little quirks here and there, it will become the best operating system for ppc's.
Plus, there are literally countless number of applications for WinMo and a lot of them are free.
Xperia has great touchscreen that allows you to click even the little icons with ease. If it is not responsive, you should change the settings for the screen sensitivity. Start>Settings>Screen or use this method, but be careful what you do and read the instructions carefully:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=485037&highlight=screen+sensitivity
It really depends on what kind of phone you want. Xperia is perfect for me and as I have said before, I cannot imagine my life without it. If you want to have a pocket pc with you and if you are preapred to spend many hours reainstalling, hard-reseting and tweaking, then you have made the right choice.
A piece of advice I give to every newcomer:
Read the topics in this forum. Just open random topics and learn about your device. Use the search functions. 99% of all your question have been answered in other threads.
I had some experience with WinMo when I bought the X1, but I wasn't very good. Now, I have full control over every aspect of my device. It has integrated itself in my way of life. All thanks to this forum...
I don't want to promote myself in any way, but check this thread out. I have put some random thoughts concerning the X1 there :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=506512
Cheers
For bigger incoming call notification you can also use a few other options:
-S2U2 has slide to answer support
-the touch HD caller also offers full screen caller ID
-resco (don`t know for sure)

No problem. We are here to help each other aren't we?
You can make it louder, but the SOUND QUALITY will not change. There is no bass and the high frequencies sound awful. The speaker is tiny and of bad quality. You had to turn it down, because the sound was unpleasant. Am I right?
I installed optxperia, too, and am very happy that I can hear my phone ringing better. The sound is somewhat distorted due to the limited speaker quality, so I turned it down. I am enjoying having good volume for games, alarms, and calls, though!
I don't need great speakers on a phone, because they are never going to equal the sound quality of good headphones, anyway. I always listen to music with really good headphones for a better listening experience, as I'm picky about sound quality.
i also help big problem looking at the caller id for incoming calls. stressing my eyes to do it. which application is better? where can i download PhoneEx 1.3?
thanks
Thanks orelsi for your detailed explanations ... it is really appreciated
A couple of googles later and I've got the Phonex 1.3.5 with which I am very happy now! Loyjwe ... if you are googling it, be sure to get the one for WM6.
@orelsi you mentioned a couple of programs such as Voice Call, Phone Tray Free, Ascendis Caller ID, Audio Caller ID. Do these work with windows mobile? I searched, but I go the general feeling that they were all for the regular windows.
As regards "black" ... yeah I guess I got myself the 10 points ... anyways, I'm a person that loves the colour blue and feel uncomfortable with black ... get a kind of "black is unlucky" feel! I'm certain I saw a link somewhere where I can set backgrounds everywhere to a picture I like ... guess I'll search for it!
@Shadowdh ... thank you for the OPTXperiabeta02.cab suggestion. Just got hold of it and will see if I'm happy with it
Generally .. a nice start! I guess I'll have more queries as I go along .., guess I really have to get used to WinMo
Thanks

No problemo. Feel free to ask , that's what I did hehe...
You can change the backgrounds in the menus of WinMo (the general theme), but I don't think you can change the colours of diff programs. That is what you wanted right?
I'm sorry abut the apps. I said that I never tested any of them. I just googled them . I asked around a little bit and here is what I got .
Try these:
Mobile Speak - (this one is for blind people, but maybe it can be set to say only callers' names and nothing else)
MS Voice Commander has such an option.
HollerID
Cheers
Seriously, if u hate the tiny fonts and un-user friendly UI on the X1, read up and flash a custom ROM.
Like "dumbphones", the ROM/firmware in WinMo phones can be upgraded. The biggest advantage / benefit of WinMo over any of the other "smartphone" OS's around is that there are loads of ppl who are willing to setup and build customised firmwares so u get the benefits and features of other (HTC!) phones....
Read up on "HardSPL" in the Custom ROMs section and give it a go - if u do it right there's no way u'll brick your phone and it'll come out the otherside like a brand new (completely different + better!) phone...

Hi mate... sorry for the seemingly terse post above, was studying for exams and so was trying to be quick...
Yes we are indeed mate... I did not have to turn it down due to rubbish quality rather it was very very loud... like another poster mentioned I tend to use earphones for listening to podcasts (rather than music) and when I play video its usually pretty decent if through the speakers... sure its not dolby etc but hey its such a little bitty speaker...

A Gift for DHD Owners :P

Hey Guys, How are you all doing, hope all is well at your end.
Since I got my DHD, I'm Suffering to find descent quality Ringtones, they are so lame and poor, that made me COMPOSE These!
-----------------------
I have created some Exquisite Ringtones for myself using my Musical Gear and Keyboard, and people started asking about these Tones, and I used to Proudly reply them back with
"These are My Compositions"
Since many people liked them, I thought that I should share it with my XDA Community.
All composed and created using superior quality, and has been amplified as well, to cover for the Low Volume Syndrome (lol) of the Desire HD, except for Rooted users with modified Kernels that has increased Volume levels.
Some Info:
1. Average file size = 500 KB
2. Average file Length = 28 Seconds
3. Various Genres for various tastes
4. I gathered them into an Album to make it easier to find them
5. Album Name = Limited Desire HD Ringtones
6. If you like a Full Version of Specific Tone, I mean the Full-Length Song, then just ask for it
7. I have given each tone a NAME, its basically the name of the Full Length file
8. Encoding Info = MP3, 128 KB Avg. Stereo
9. Tones can be used as ringtones, Alarm tones, or generally Notifications
10.Included 2 SMS, Shorter tones, if you Like!
Installation instructions:
Create the following directory structure on your SD Card root folder (all lower case):
media/audio/notifications
media/audio/ringtones
Put the mp3's in these folders, depending on whether you want to use it as a ringtone or notification sound. Go to Settings -> Sound & Display -> "Phone ringtone" or "Notification sound". Your newly added mp3's should now be available for selection in those lists :
Final Suggestion:
Just listen to them using your Stereo Headphones first, you will be able judge better which one you like more, if at all (lol).
Feedback are more than welcome
Wael
Thanks!
Thanks. There are some very nice ones here.
Forgot to say
If you want to be able to easily find all the tones and not spread-ed among the default ones, then try to rename them like the attached photo, just a suggestion.
You can use Rename Master (FREE) to do that!!
Thank you!
Thanks!! They are perfect. I really liked "Rock you" and "Rock 'n Roll".
May I have full length versions of those?
Will do my best to upload them asap.
thanks dude awesomeness
Thank you, very nice.
Thanks
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
These tunes aire brilliant
Very nice tones but I would never use them as a ringtone or notification, it's too much. Also my ringtone position has been filled long time ago Moorea
Thanks. It's great~
I'm glad that I could contribute to XDA, and happy that you guys liked them.
Will upload some new ones soon.
Blesses to all of you !
Thans! already using them!
Awesome Bro.!!! Thanks
Nice! Thanks for sharing!
thamks.....you r the best!!
