Hi!
A few days ago i bought a mda vario 2. The problem is that i have no sound. When some1 is calling i have only vibrations or when i want to listen a song, watch a film etc. I did hard reset a few times. I tried diffrent roms but it doesnt help. Cleaning mini usb gives nothing. I have wm 6.1 proffesional. Please help me sorry for my english im from poland
Yes i had the same thing when i got my hermes, it was my first WM device so i wasnt familiar with it. If your case is the same as mine then you have your sound profile set to "Vibrate". You can change it either by taping on the little loudspeaker icon on the top of your today screen and selecting "On", or if you have the HTC Today plugin, by selecting "Profiles" and then "Normal" mode. Hope this helps
But i have "normal" profile with sound on. Also when i try to see a video or listen mp3 files i dont have sound

There are several threads on sound problems here. Do none of them fit your situation?
Is it just the rear speaker that has no sound?
Do you get sound using the headphones?
Could it be that the Rear speaker push on connector needs pushing back on?

OK, but if someone phones you I know you do not hear it ring BUT can you hear their voice in the front speaker?
Mike
I can talk normally.
Try the info for new members http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=325748 . I had the same issue and had to re-attach the speaker plug.I checked this out by gently squeezing the unit below the speaker about 2cm down, it would make the connection then quit sound again. When I removed the back case (not the battery cover) I saw the plug was loose. Follow the instructions in the Hermes manual (from the post) carefuly.
How to unscrew 4ed screw under "void" sticker??What is "void" sticker for?

If you remove the void sticker then the Warranty becomes useless. It is supposed to stop you dismantling your phone.
So, if you have a warranty then use it. If you have NO warranty then use a a Torx No 6 screwdriver to remove the screws. (Just peel off the sticker, it will break up into little pieces).
Mike
i had same problem but i upgraded my rom to the v7 blue calm and now it works perfectly..i also have vario 2 but my warranty was voided long time ago lol if doesnt work theres a guy who made a website detailing instructions on how to fix it
I am having a sound issue, but it's pretty unique.
My rear speaker works fine if I'm trying to use it for the speaker phone, but it won't work in any other application. For example, I cannot play songs from windows media player, it won't play any ringtones when I receive a call.
I tried plugging in the USB headphones, and it's exactly the same. Works for the phone, not for anything else.
HOWEVER, with a bluetooth headset, I can play songs just fine. This leads me to believe it's a software issue but I can't pinpoint what it could be. Anyone have any ideas before I hard reset this bad boy?

Please help me!!!!
this morning my XDA2 has decided that the speaker and microphone sholld be switched off permenently! :x
I believe that it thinks the headset is plugged in - but it isnt!!! (i dont use bluetooth)
I hev tried a soft reset and a hard reset (and also plugging and unplugging the headset)
Please help me - I only like to use the headset when listening to my tunes.
PS i spoke to the O2 data support helpdesk at 60p / min and it took them about 5 minutes to suggest that a soft / hard reset might cure it, otherwise they are clueless.
Is there any way to manually chage the profile from headset to normal handheld????
thanks!
PS my device i nearly 1 yr old - is this the kind of thing that I can expect to occurr more frequently as my XDA2 goes into old age?
i had this problem with my XDA 1. I had no idea what was going on but remembered it working last time i had the headphones in. A soft reset didn't fix it for me either. what DID fix it was ramming the headphone jack in and out really fast. After a few attempts it came back to normal I guess have to 'undo' the problem the headphone caused when it was in there.
  hehehehe
It works!!!!

Speaker and microphone silent because of headphone
Hello,
Glad you got everything working again..
Just a quick note - I was in a motorcylce accident recently and had my PPC in my pocket, - it was damaged at the the area of the headphone jack, which came loose, and caused exactly the problem you described.
To fix it I had to open the PPC up (instructions are available elsewhere in this forum) and then resolder the headphone socket to the PPC - Now it works fine again.
The upshot of this is that I think the microphone and speaker turining off when the headphone is plugged in is hard wired in - and also the headphone jack is quite delicate - it is only held on to the PC board by the solder connection of about 6 legs, and has 2 very small plastic locating pins, so go carefully with the jamming the headphones in and out.
Also when mine came loose - the back left of the 6 legs broke off - and without that connected back it still never produced sound through the speaker or mic., so it would be possible to permanently wire that in to make sound go both ways.
Mine is mute too did you do anything or did it just fix itself?
It eventually fixed after a couple of hard resets - first one didnt work, but after using the headset for a bit, i got the stuff from O2 to send it back for a repair. when u reset it again the problem was fixed. I reckon threatening it with surgery scared it into submission!
I had the same Prob at every Time who i hit my XDAII, or if it fall down.
After that i must push & hit it again,- sometimes 15-20 Times(!) and after that it works normal. It´s an "cold" point on the board,- the O2 Hotline knows this...

Same problem from yesterday! ..it is the jack ..if I move it down with the stylus ..the audio returns to the speaker..uff..
I don' wanna open it and solder.. too lazy..lol
Dead speaker
I have the exact same fault as described
only after losing about 3 calls did i realise it was the xda2 not some nutter that wouldn't speak!
fixed it with putting the headphone jack in then out etc..... 15 times!
it would seem like this is a design fault! as it is coming up to year for the xda2 should we organise o2 to recall the xda2's and repair this fault!
So I have this problem - only thing is Im in the USA at the mo and didnt bring my headset - is there any other fix as Im kinda stuck ?
Nigel
Husband had same problem.
Changing ring tone fixed it. Don't know why. Don't know how, but it fixed it!

I have the same problem, after calling with a headset, now my sound has gone ( Out of complete my XDA II ). Changing the ringtone didn't work for me...I am going to try to test the plug/headset way!
After 12 times my sound came back...so it worked for me!!!
It's the headphone Jack!
The problem is with the headphone jack!
I have had the same problem for months, sometimes it would stay without sound, always when I dropped it. Usually it returned after 1 or two days, but the last time I dropped it it seemed to be final... I've had no sound for more than a week - I'm using it as a PDA...
Reading the posts above, I decided to insert the pen in the headphone socket (as I don't have the headphones here with me), move it around carefully, and it wroked! Right now, it feels like magic, but that's it - I will probably have to get it fixed permanently, but for now it will do!
well i always have that problem in my phones... because i always hook them in my car stereo by the headset output.. and constant using of the output somehow makes the insides of it dirty.. believe me its dust.. a tooth pick would be very effective as it takes the dirt away.. blowing in sometimes work...
mine is also soundless
i was able to get some dust out of it....
but it won't work....
i don't have the nerves to ramm the headphones in....but isn't there another safer way to fix it....
plz let me know, (hard resettet 5 times.... won't work..)
btw, i tried to put some new updates on it....
but i can't find any, (i searched, but couldn't find anything...)
device information:
Rom Version: 4.01.12 ENG
Rom date: 12/22/03
Radio Version: 4.21.00
Protocol version: 32S54
It's a little bit out of date...that's why i need new ones (i think)
h0t_sh0t
bringing it to the accredited local shop would be the safest way.. maybe there's more dust in there.. you can also rewire it again.. like opening the PPC and soldering back some pins.. (if some pins broke off ..)
Same thing happened to my jam too.
Problem is; there's a little switch in your headphone socket, when you plug your headset it turns off the external sound, and when u unplug it should normally turn on the external sound. But if the switch is locked, it does not recognize that u unplug your headphone.
My solution is, plug-unplug your headset's plug (or something thinner is better) several times in different angles carefully to your socket try to touch the switch while your're playing something. Till u hear the external sound.
Mine is ok now.
(Sorry about my bad English)
I had the same problem. I sprayed a little WD-40 on the tip of my headphones... pushed it in and out for a couple of times and viola!
first question...
what's wd-40??
second question...
when i put my earphones in, i can hear everything...but I can't speak...
but when I unplug my earphones, and I scream in my xda... I can hear a little bit what i'm saying when i plug my earphones back in.
but it's very crappy sound, and when I slam (not to hard of course) my xda with the mic onto my desk (while recording) and i listen to it again, i can hear the drums....(the slamming) but I can't talk in it while using my headset...
has anybody had this before...?
third thing...
My uncle bought the XDA in Singapore about 2 years ago (when it just came out) so when i'd like to bring it back.... i'd have to fligh all the way to Singapore. (does anybody know a good shop/store who sells/repairs XDA phones...??? or is there anybody who can do this....?
thnx for all the help

Greetings all
I've got a problem with my headphone and want to be 100% sure its an hardware fault before having to send it off to O2 repair centre (across the other side of the country)
I'm only getting sound out of one ear piece, I've checked the headphones on another phone and the problem isn't at that end. So I'm wondering if somehow unknowningly I've altered a setting (if even possible) which has chanced the sound output to something like a mono or handfree signal where theres only one plug in your ear?
Is this even possible  any hints would be great!
marto
I guess it's more a hardware problem. It could just be dust/dirt in one of the contacts or worst would be that one contact has been pushed in too much. This can happen when inserting the jack not in a very straight fashion.
If your unit is no longer under warantee and you are brave enough to open it up for cleaning, then do it. I usually use a toothpick soaked in a bit of rubbing alcohol for cleaning, and a needle to push back the contacts.
mda compact ringing prob
do i use this advice for my mda. i put in headphones and no i cant hear it ring. it was making a low low sound but now nothing. i can haear thu the phones
Left channel earphone also not working on mine!
I too have the fault where the left channel cuts out (tho with a bit of jiggling mine kinda works again).
Damn it!!
Anyone have a safe method to cracking the case to see if the jack is stuffed??
(out of warranty of course)

Well I don't know about "cracking the cover" but I did unfortunately send it off for a warranty repair to MPS in Qld :x I lost my high quality screen protector and after about 3 weeks of emails and phone calls the unit finally got back to me....still with sounds coming from one ear
The headphones work perfectly in my motorola v635 so I know they're ok, just tossing up whether to go through the hassle of be without my pda again for another month :?

X2 is the answer
Have you tried Blue Trek X2?
I lost the loudspeaker-sound in my Himalya. It works using headphones. I think it may have to do with another set of headphone I connected to it, which was not original. Perhaps it put the device on permanent headphone mode. But then again it might not have anything to do with that.
Is there a Himalaya expert in Berlin - Germany who might be able to help me with it? I dread having to send it to the official reapir center, as I expect it to cost a neck and a hand.
Happened to me when I received a call whilst listening to music. I pulled the headphones out before answering the call, and then answered it. I could here them but they cvouldn't hear me. If you plug the headphones in again and remove them it solves the problem. Well it did for me anyway
I tried that. I doesn't do it. It doesn't matter what kind of sound, if Media Player file is played of phone ringing, only the headphones work. I think I need a dotor.
I have read a lot about the problem in others threads. It seems the headphone-jack can get stuck, not making a contact, which normally is being made and which turns the XDA back to speaker mode, when the headphone-jack is pulled out. Hereto:
1- What does that mean exactely? Which part is that, in what part in the on-board jack? If it had been bent out of place, is it possible to bend the part pack (at best without having to disassemble)? (I tried the ramming in and out, no go).
2- I looked at the non-original jack I had used and it is about 2 mm longer than the original. Might perhaps that explain it? Is there a part in the back that could have been bent out of place?
3- If indeed this was the problem (if the jack had been bent out of place, one way or another), would the microphone work? I can record using the dictaphone and the micophone also works during a call.
When we had himalaya's it happened to both of our devices (my wife and I had one each).
It appears the spring in the speaker can come loose. I used to bang mine (pardon the pun) on my palm and sometimes it would start to work. Then we broke the speaker protection shield, and this made it easier sometimes and hard to fix in others.
When I sold it, my friend took it apart as it was out of warranty, and as he is electrically minded, he find the dodgy bit, and soldered it to the device, and now works perfectly.
Yes! Thanks Jasjar. It worked after a bit of beating.
I found a detailed instruction of how to fix it permanently in another thread. Sounds complicated and dangerous but eventually I must do it.

Sound lost problem
Hi all,
same happen to me, the sound stoped working (on my side it had nothing to do with the phone jack).
After the modifaication which is described in this forum i had still the same problem so i solder the loud speaker directly - still same problem...
After some time i flashed the device again, now it works, so on my side it was a software problem...
The device was 3 month out of power, but i think remove the battery and if the sound appears on startup (on first boot) but later not, then flash the os and it will work ...

When somebody called, the ringtone DID sound.
Anyway, bluetooth handsfree worked fine.
All we did was play with the jack, using the stylus! Not even headphones...
And now it works fine!
He says he'll never put phones on it again... lol

Looking for more Info
Hi, please help me find which points in the MDAII Motherboard can I solder to disable the headphones and get the audio and mic back to the MDA.
After a while my headphone-jack is broken from the motherboard and now I only have the pin outs in it.
The device is working perfect, and I can use bluetooth headphones. I just don't have audio in the speaker and no mic without bluetooth.
I hope someone can tell me which of the red points en the picture can I solder to disable the headphones.
I just want to do this temporally until I get a replacement spare part for it.
Thanks
EDIT: 12-12-2007
I got it. Just joining 1 and 3 and you will get audio back to the PDA disabling the headphones jack.
Thanks anyways for reading this..
Did you find out what all the mboard pins are for the jack?
I have a dodgy jack and would like to take flying leads of the mboard jack to an external (easily changed) inline jack. Does any know what the 1 to 6 pins correlate to. I would like to still switch the audio via the external jack. Not bothered about the mic.
TIA.
Hi all
It would be great if you shed some light on the problem

Any theories/ideas what might have gone wrong...& possible solutions..
any help would be appreciated...thanxs
sound failed on xda exec
i also had the same issue but my handset was replaced as it was within 28 days of getting the handset
i never did manage to find the exact issue
when your handset fell did it have external sound / handsfree plugged in at the time
about the only thing that made any sense with mine was the possibilty of the micro switch / contacts of the externl audio jack being damaged
dont know if any of this info helps you at all but best of luck getting it sorted
Still no explanation for the no sound problem Xda Exec
Does anybody find out allready what's the problem with no sound on the Xda Exec.
I not speak about the problem with the external audio jack.
I can make cals like normal, I only can not play music or listen if somenone is calling me.
Thanks

You are shure that this willbe the problem, because I can make calls without the headphone. I was thinking that in the case that the connector gives the problem, I should also not be able to make any calls without using the headphone.

Ok, here we go.
We have hands, tools ( a hammer ) and 1 needle.
I think I forgot something, but...
I think the problem, when the problem is hardware,
is that when you put the headphone jack, the top of the jack he opens the microswitch what you see at first.
Ofcourse when this switch he stays also open when you take out the jack, than you have a problem.
And yes with a needle you can first open the contakt and than you can dress littlebit the position of the contakt.
I have only 1 problem on my tel, this switch is closed as well, when I take out the jack. The problem is not this switch.
here we go
Correct, I am shure that this is almost always the problem.
In fact the switch is closed in normal position, and he goes open when you put the headphones.
When he not close as well automatic than, you have a problem.
But in my case it is really not this switch, so I am still looking for the reason why I not have sound.
hi all
i have same probelem like you
my friend using my device for weeks and when she give it back to me i have no sound from my device & even from headset i call the i-mate center the girl told me maybe your jack is dameged but when i sent it to suport center they told me your flex cable is dameged by wrong rotating your device and we haven't that yet ....
they sent it back to me and after some day my screen shows nothing then i buoght a cable from ebay an change , now i have voice sound screen
&....
like before
i hope these usefull for you
This was exactly my issue, under that pinkbox you marked is the tiny tab that makes or breaks contact with the internal speaker. Because my headphones break the contact, this tab after much use was stuck in the open position even after the headphones were removed. When I did the procedure you mentioned magically, sound..wow. I am extremely greatful for your troubleshooting skill.
Thanks a million mo3ulla.

i have the same problem, my device fell, but i didn't notice the problem until next day (i didn't use it) so i'm not sure if it is because of the drop.

hey mo3ulla, did your method work after repeated use of the headphone port? did it get stuck again any time after you fixed it?
just asking cause i have this problem on my 9000 and haven't opened it yet so i don't want to open and close it repeatedly
thankss
I have this problem aswell. But I inserted a fork and twisted it around a little and now it works as it should again.
Bumping this thread. Should be a sticky or in the wiki.
Anyways,
I tried the pin trick back when I posted here, it worked but it wasn't permanent. Instead I put a crumpled piece of post-it note above the pink dot in the picture and it worked, up until recently. Does anybody have a method to bend the connecter back down? I'm probably not using the needle right, I press the pink spot, but it pops back up.
Ideas?
twisting the pin really helps. thanks for the solution. I tried to insert my headphone again and the pin always stucked. I'm trying to find a permanent solution for this. Maybe put something to push the pin to be connected everytime I remove the headphone...
I hope this helps. I found it very useful to my Dopod 900. I tried to connect my headphones (sounds works on my headphone) then I disconnect it and sounds works on my stereo/speakers.
*Please do it carefully in pushing the pin upward from inside the hole. Just push it a little bit just enough to touch the upper pin..
additional tip: after you fixed your device, try to install SRS Wow for great audio experience
Quick Fix
I found that if you apply a little pressure between the base and just above the send key this seems to work, I tried this tonight and will report back if goes again.

could be a damaged PCB motherboard, or lose connetion for the sound chip!
you could try fixnig it, or replacing the motherboard.
a new motherboard could be bought off E-Bay US for a cheapish price =]

Could be. When you say you hear all sounds but phone calls - I presume you mean all sounds from the rear speaker.
If I understand correctly you have reflashed? If so then you have 99% ruled out a software problem. The earpiece speaker could be damaged or probably just not making a good contact.
Quite often (though not always you can check the contacts by dialling the speaking clock (or similar) and the giving the phone a few short sharp taps (nothing too violent though) and if you hear the sound crackle on and off then it's almost certainly just needing the contacts tweaked. Not a fool-proof way to check but worth a try.
I have seen reports of both damaged speakers and poor contacts, both are reasonably likely. There is an equivalent Motorola speaker that can be used in place of the genuine article if it turns out to be damaged - The genuine one is tricky to get a hold of.
Before dismantling though, check your USB port. Try to be sure there is no damage around it or bent pins inside. Insert and retract a headset/earpiece mini USB. Do you get sound through an earpiece? If you get no sound then it is likely NOT the earpiece speaker that's at fault but the USB port. The port and it's connections must work correctly for sound to be routed to the earpiece speaker. (If you're pretty sure there is no damage there then a repair shop or dismantling is probably the answer)
