Problem with Niki100 - Touch Dual, MDA Touch Plus General

I dont know if anyone else has ever had this problem but my Niki doesnt seem to come out of standby. When switched on all is well you can call and recieve calls too, as soon as the backlight turns itself off and it goes into standby the screen doesnt want to light up again. The green indication light is still on but no visable screen. Any help from anyone would be much appriciated.
Ive tried installing a new ROM but it still keep on doing the same thing.

I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM) depending on your requirements.
Also read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540943&highlight=standby&page=2where the resolution was to get a new SIM.
Obviously this only solves the problem when the crash is because of the sim and/or settings which impact the sim. To rule out a software cause its best to start with a hard reset.

Phone freezing

Hi,
I have a big problem with my Tytn (sorry if this is already been posted). Quite often the phone freezes, making it impossible to turn on again. The only thing that works is a soft-reset. What is worse, is that when the phone is in this state, although the green light is regularly flashing, it is unable to get phone calls even if the caller gets the normal ringing signal. No trace is left of the call, neither in calls list! This is a really serious issue: please, let me know if you have an idea of how to solve the problem.
Thanks!
I am having the same issue. I haven't been able to isolate it. I was havign to0 restart 1-2 times a day. Same systems press the power button nothing. Lights blinking everything looks ok. but nothing on the screen. and i miss calls. really pain in the ass. I loaded mobile secretary and it hasn;t locked in a day or two which is odd.
I also sometimes have to rpess the power button two times for it to wake
me too
It's happening to me too. I will lose service and the phone doesn't go out and poll automatically when service should be good. It may show 1, 2, 3 bars then when I try to make a call it hangs, and then get an x and a Y!, then searches for service. I have the GSM only hack installed and the activesync workaround and it still does this. It is not useable as a phone.

With all due respect, there is no solution where the link leads to.
I am having the GSM problem also. Just from time to time I am noticing an exclamation mark near the 'antennae' icon in the top bar. When I tap it, I read 'Service unavailable' in the balloon. From that point I may either soft-reset, or switch GSM flight mode on and off, which brings the PIN code keyboard and the phone works again.
I really don't think it is related to power saving, as it happened a few times in the car with TyTN on external power.

I think warmkiwi's link may be relevant to jimwormold's original post, which may not be related to your and angled1's problem of failing to poll correctly after dropping it's signal.
Mike
yes, it was. sorry, i should have quoted the original author (jimwormold)
well, sorry for being so picky on you :|
Now when we have defragmented the conversation I wonder if the GSM problem is reported more widely? and what is supposed to do in order to isolate the problem and fix it...?

Sorry to do a "me too" posting, but I experience the exact same symptoms. There is no obvious pattern to when this happens, but it is a major problem, as there is no way (other than trying to switch it on) to distinguish whether the phone is working or not at any given moment.
I am running the latest (South African) ROM on my Vario II.

Given this thread now appears to have two distinct issues running together I better be clear that I am referring to the lock-up/freezing issue not the dropped GSM signal issue!!
To be honest there are quite a few possible causes for the freezing issue(s). I would suggest searches and the wiki on such things as (and you may or may not have tried some already):
1. Use of a Task Manager to properly shut running programmes otherwise they contiue to run in the background
2. Proper shutting down of Active Sync in addition to any task manager you may have, as it can re-start itself automatically (particularly overnight. Look for the "Fake Server Trick")
3. Always shut down Wifi when not in use (vital particularly overnight but also good practice to avoid lock ups)
4 For overnight and possibly other quiet times you can consider having your device automatically perform a soft reset to clear any running programmes that may block alarms/receipt of mail etc. Look for such things as xbar or SK schema

Yes indeed, although I think that both: a Phone App problem, and a GSM signal problem, are indeed the same, maybe only differently percepted and described by users affected.
I need ActiveSync to be running in order for DirectPush to work. If it conflicts with the phone, it makes the device unusable concerning push email functionality.

I agree they may be cause and effect for some folks. Although I don't believe we can say that all the freezing and lock-ups are due to dropped GSM signal and freezing when failing to re-establish it. The items I list either taken together or individually have been found by others to work in some cases.
I appreciate that if you require Active Sync running then this is not a solution for you. I think the issue of crashing on loss of signal requires more analysis and I'm not aware of much discussion of it - though I could be wrong!!

I was fiddling with the phone yesterday and today, and I have a hypothesis that my problem is related to PIN entry screen that won't pop up but is silently awaiting a PIN underneath.
I was trying to ucheck the "Require PIN when phone is used" box in Settings but with no luck, my PIN is then refused with "Unknown SIM Error" message. Maybe it wants a PUK but I don't have it on hand to try.
My plan now is to:
- uninstall all Phone-related applications (PhonePlus, Dark_Blue Buttons, EZDial),
- request PUK from my office and try to uncheck the box,
- try prepaid SIM card which has no PIN
To observe symptoms I need two-three days, so I will rather not be posting until solid data is collected.
ps Mike, it is a pleasure to be on a board with people like you.

I'm on day 2 of my replacement phone from Cingular and the problem with losing gsm signal is non existent. The problem was hardware and fixed by calling and getting a warranty replacement phone. I'll let you know if the problem returns. Oh, and I have not been using the gsm only hack. I'm trying to see if the phone will work as designed first.

Good news - hope it continues to work well.

I am reporting from the test field that my problem persists, despite uninstalling all phone-related extenders.
I have noticed that freezing is paired with disabling Bluetooth. So after switching the phone off (flight mode on) and back on (flight mode off), I also have to turn on Bluetooth.
EDIT: I was grounded for last few days at home and freezing problem was not occuring. I am now thinking that it may be related to switching band between GPRS and UMTS. My next step will be disabling UMTS for good. It saves a whole lotta battery, by the way. I am for the third day mostly on standby, with a few calls made, and I am still on 70%! (no 3G in the area)
I have contacted my vendor and asked about replacement policy, they are "checking this with the importer". It's a beauty of living in not-so-western country. Poland is the name.

I'm having exactly the same problem, very annoying because the staus LEDs keep blinking as normal. I too think the problem is UMST-GPRS switching related, as I also have problems when phoning while I drive with my car from a UMTS enabled into a GPRS only zone. The voice call is interupted and I get a loud noise, sounding like a scrambled voice, on both sides of the connection. At home my UMTS signal is very weak, so I think it happens when I move around the house to a place where the TyTN switches to GPRS.
I've put my TyTN to "GSM network" only now to see if this helps, but I use UMTS frequently so this is no long term solution for me.

Hi,
mine was siffering of freezing issue, I sent a mail to HTC support, they don't know about it but the guy said me that I must to hard reset my device. Then no more freezes, I will keep testing it.

BTW: I changed my old and almost destroyed SIM card by a new one.

Elf wont come out of Standby mode

HTC Touch wont come out of Standby mode, or sleep, and I have to take out the battery to get it to come back on. Anyone heard of this before or had this problem?
Thanks!
Never heard of it. Has this been happening for a long time? Are you looking for an answer or just want to know if anyone has had it happen to them. If you flashed a new ROM recently - that might be your problem - IF you installed a new app - that new app might be causing problems - Did you do a hard reset to see if that fixes the problem - Any registry changes which you may have made would be reverted back to stock - (to original ROM or if you flashed a new rom - to that ROM's original spec's. (might solve your problem, but you would loose everything you put on your phone - So do some backing up before performing the hard reset.
sod
it's brand new. I just put it on standby and about 1/30 times it wont come out. i have to take the battery out, none of the buttons will work. i havent put anything on it, it just basic.
Try performing a hard reset then to see if that solves the problem - If not - return it to where you got it and get an exchange under warranty - It shouldn't be doing that.
thanks! i'll try that
How are you trying to get it to come out of standbye. Pushing the power button at top of phone right?
Do your calls still come through and can you answer the calls?
MMS, SMS, Notifications, Alarms, Appointment reminders - do these all wake your device up from standbye?
I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM + AUTO) depending on your requirements.

Hermes freezing

Hi everybody!
First of all sorry if there's already a thread for this kind of freezing but i havent found answers.
My HERMES freezes completely, won't let me access screen, power button or any other function. It just gets stuck in what i was doing (mainly today screen).
Only way to make it work is to soft reset it. Is this a common problem?
Now as i write i realized the phone ain't working, now i recall i saw a blinking NOGSM when reseting!
I got this unit from a guy in the UK, it's weird because i remember it worked when i first tested it. Then i sold it to a guy and this guy claimed problems, could it be something to do with the sim card perhaps? Can it be a hardware problem?
Haven't got a clue. I appreciate your help!
I've seen people reporting similar problems when an old SIM card is used - so the owner might want to replace his old SIM with a new one, if that's the case.
Also, check if the SIM fits securely into its socket. I was having a problem with the radio suddenly turning off just yesterday, and it seems to be gone after I cleaned the SIM's contact pads and re-inserted it firmly.
Regardless, I suggest the "standard" troubleshooting be performed - that is, disabling automatic ActiveSync via the fake server trick, making sure today plugins are installed to the main storage (and not to the SD card), checking the registry for invalid entries etc.
Overall, most freezes are because of software, not hardware. Today plugins are known to cause freezes, as well as poorly cooked ROMs. If anything else fails and the freezes are not clearly related to GSM/SIM, try reflashing the phone with an official ROM image and run it for a week or so without installing any additional software. If the freezing persists, then it might really indicate a hardware issue
thanks a lot for your reply DmytroL, that was really helpful ill let you know if replacing sim works when i actually have another sim to test it!
Keeping my fingers crossed, as in my case, SODs (standby of death) disappeared exactly when I replaced my old SIM that dates back to 2001 with a way newer one. I've had only a single radio crash since then, which I'd attribute to the Phone Today plugin. At least, no radio crashes since I've disabled that plugin. The battery drain has also decreased significantly.
I really hope the old SIM was the root cause of all this nightmare. Time will tell...

The solution I found was removing the SIM card for it to work properly. I kept on reading and apparently the radio chip is sometimes badly designed (probably from a bad batch) and heats up more than it should causing it to fail. That is why it worked at the beginning and then froze after a couple of minutes. Solution to that was either paying twice of what the phone cost me to get a replacement board or actually earning money by selling the phone for spares!! For my shame in this forum i did the latter Anways hope the experience helps!

Maybe you could of just replaced the SIM itself with a new one, as sometimes that solves the SOD problem when adjusting the settings which impact the SIM ie setting 2G or 3G only from AUTO doesn't.
i´d tried it with 3 different sims and no change in the results!

I guess you didn't have the chance to set it to either 3G or 2G only from AUTO 3G/2G, on my network I have to do this to avoid SOD regardless of SIM. The default phone options result in SOD on a regular basis, now with 3G only (WCDMA + UMTS 2100) = Zero SOD and a totally stable phone.

BIG GSM PROBLEM (Glofiish X610)

Hi guys,
i have a big issue concerning the incoming calls on my phone. When my Phone is in standby mode, there is a HUGE probability that i wont recieve any call. I have the device for 4 days now and today i tried to call myself many many times and i can say that the PDA revieves only about 50% of the calls i try to make. For the other 50% i only get to hear the Mailbox after waiting a while. A few minutes later i recieve a sms on my mobile that i had a missed call on the mailbox. So I think this crap cell phone does turn the GSM power too low while in standy mode. While not being in standby mode i can recieve as good as every incoming call. Do you know if there is a way to adjust the GSM signal strength?
Actually the phone suits my needs quite well besides of that issue, so actually i'd rather like to fix that issue instead of returning that phone to the reseller
PS: I m on a 1800 GSM network and didnt make changes to the ROM.

Try a hard reset and see if that solves the problem.
It's common problem of Eten X600, Eten X650 and Eten X610
I have in hands Eten X650 some time ago - it does not recognize my SIM card at all. just "No SIM" on today screen. with another SIM card it start to skip calls.
Also a lot of users have this problem with GSM.

GSM works but switching to WCDMA causes problems

My phone acts weird on the network mode 'gsm/wcdma(automode)'
It works perfectly when I select 'GSM only'. This means that I have the APNs right
But as soon as I select the automode so that I can use 3g, phone starts acting weird. For starters the internet does not work. I also lose my voice service. The bars show that I do have voice service, but on making any call the call doesn't go through, and on ending the call the call remains on the notification bar. But if I dont end the call, then it does eventually shut by itself (~15secs) and then the bars disappear and I lose service. At this point my phone has automatically gone into flight mode. On turning flight mode off... the cycle repeats (with some exceptions)
1.notification shows service coming back: 3G, full bars for voice service. (Sometimes 3g doesn't appear at all, and at this point internet does not work but I can make calls)
2.but internet does not work (but if I keep trying it might work for a few seconds. Noticed that because network mode is on auto. Notification bar shows switching to GSM, and then back to WDCMA. On repeating this the internet lasted longer ~a min or two)... and then doesn't start at all (basically its very random)
3.make a phone call and call doesn't got through, lose service and goes into flight mode

Does wcdma only mode work well? I don't even use gsm/wcdma mode because its a battery waste juggling that extra variable. Gsm mode only used to be used as a battery saver for many reasons, but since hspa is so abundant and umts is so efficient, I exclusively use wcdma only mode as my battery saver mode. Really need it too since Samsung borked the reception on the note 3 compared to note2. A phone this big and there shouldn't have been any compromise in the antenna department. I am also hoping for a LTE/wcdma auto mode. I know I probably haven't answered your question but it is alternative and personally I think more efficient than gsm mode only considering how well hspa has evolved and the bandwidth on umts is still worlds better than edge or GPRS.

wcdma and dual mode are making this issue
the gsm mode only works properly . .

I don't know if you wanna try, but maybe a factory reset will fix your ills. A lot of people, including have been having success with a myriad of issues and factory reset has been fixing it. I am guessing what is loaded at the factory by default has been buggy but the factory reset is loading phones correctly. There are still some bugs here and there even after resetting but the phone has been out less than a month. Need to give Samsung, especially xda devs some time to works some of the kinks. If a factory reset doesn't fix your issue then phone is probably wonky. Also, just to be you are using the correct phone for USA and not a European model?

It just disappears. I can receive calls. I am starting to think this is a bug. I really don't want to factory reset the device. Are there more reported issues of this?

apparently yes.. at least for now.. It may have something to do with the way I changed the network type. Normally if you do it from Mobile Networks> Network mode.. you will be fine but I created a Nova shortcut instead to get to it quickly. This shortcut looks a little different the way it opens the Network mode selection so maybe choosing between LTE/GSM from here screwed it up for me. There is nothing else I did before the phone functionality died on me.

No. I can't even get into service mode on my phone through dialer or app. Frustrating. A few people have the same problem not being able to get into service mode. Its a minor inconvenience so I haven't pursued a fix. Dont wanna fix what ain't broken. I am on an int'l rom btw and there is no LTE/wcdma mode either.

I have started to experience the same issue, I changed the mobile network type to GSM only and this seemed to help with the quality and connection of calls, having it set to GSM/WCDMA (Auto Mode) causes bad quality of audio/connection of calls, and even sometimes I will hear the number that I am calling ring then it will just stop and I have to end the call.
Any possible reasons for this?
Factory re-set didn't help in my situation.
There is no way to fix it yourself. I had the exact same problem. had to fix it from a shop they have SPT box to fix it. you can do it yourself if you can order it from amazon probably 216 bucks
Just take it to a shop mate.

The issue I am experiencing is either incoming or outgoing calls on the GSM/WDMCA mode when the audio just goes and then can come back again, no issues like this using GSM only, so my phone has gone for either repair or better still a replacement as the other issue with it is that it is lagging on many occasions even when just moving from screen page, and also when playing mp4 videos.
