x1i or x1a for ATT network - XPERIA X1 General

I want to buy the black Xperia which is only available in the international version. Is there anything I should be aware of in purchasing the international version.
Will it work with ATT's 3G HSDPA frequencies. Are there any other major differences in either hardware or software that i should be aware of.
Thanks

AT&T uses both 850/1900 for their 3G HSDPA, and only the X1a supports the both 850/1900mhz 3G band. You will need the x1a for the best 3G reception for the AT&T network.
That's the only major difference between x1i and x1a. The other difference is x1a in US can only capture VGA video @ 15fps, while x1i can do 30fps.

The fact that SE turned off video calling on the X1a pisses me off. I'm more than aware that no US carriers support it, but turning it off is retarded.

Cant this be fixed in a reg edit? The hadware seems to still be on the x1a.

Regarding video-call:
I'll flash the UK ROM to my X1A
I'll report what happens

Thanks man, sounds good. I'm sure it shouldn't be hard to fix. Skype's lack of video call support for their mobile version upset me.

I still think its as simple as a reg edit.

I used "Advanged config" to tweak the video-call registry setting; it was set to "disabled (defaul)" I thought it was going to be a piece of cake but nope the video call didn't show up... Could be on the ROM (different dialpad skin) or on the inner guts (as with the 10fps-limited VGA video rec)

OK GUYS just flashed UK ROM into my X1A
video-call is there !!
I'll test it later, but the icons and menu options for video-call seem to work properly

nice. whats the major difference with the uk rom vs. the US rom? If you have an x1a and flash to the UK rom, will it disable the US 3g bands?

UK X1i ROM ON X1A
DIFFERENCES:
- Coooool, I'm still gettin' full 850MHz HSDPA bling bling god speed
- Only missing feature: "TTY" in settings -> system
- "AT&T auto-operator configuration" is still there
- Video call icon and menu added to dial pad
- Slightly slower than NAM ROM ?? I had this same impression when flashed NAM ROM into my UK X1i... barely noticeable but curious BTW
I can't call any of my pals with 3G phones right now
Hope to see 'em late night TO TEST my new toy

nice again!!! Now, how about the 15fps in VGA video vs. 30fps in VGA video on the x1i.

I use the X1i black on ATT network and i also use the ATT Fuze and theres nothing you need to worry about highspeed 3G and all that works fine, great actually i believe its even faster than my Fuze...and when the Xperia is on Edge its alot faster than the Fuze network wise...of course the Xperia is alot faster all around over the Fuze. You have any questions regarding it just PM ill give u my best opinion on it

to the op, about the black xperia, i have a black x1a, so x1a do come in black. my service provider here in puerto rico is CLARO, and we run the 850mhz band both for gsm and 3g network!! hope that helps!!!
ps: yes mine is a x1a, and i do have video calling as well on mine straight from factory and works exquisite!!!

i thought the x1a was only in silver? did you buy it from your provider or get it unlocked?

i bought it from my provider, and this x1a records video at 30fps!! i just tested it, recorded a video, loaded the video up on any video converter, and the video showed up as 640x400 at 30fps!! dont know why those dimensions but thats what it showed!! i thought the x1a only recorded at 15fps or something liike that!!

Thanks for the feedback. Will buy from Amazon. I was really worried about the 3G due the 1 band 850Mxtz. I prefer the black color to the Silver.

man! here in latin america our x1s are special or something! i just checked bands and this thing has quadband gsm + wcdma 850,1900,2100 and 1700! plus video call, and 30fps recording! all in a x1a +3( a+ x1i!!

As AT&T continues to roll out various 3G services farther out from the metro areas, and develops new areas not previously covered with 3G, you'll find that the phone will need to be on 850 Mhz in order to have 3G services, whether they be UMTS or HSDPA.
In the DC Metro area, you'll have 3G with 1900 MHz on your X1i.
But as you travel farther out, let's use Warrenton as an example, you'll notice that you're on EDGE with an X1i, and on 3G with an X1a.

Are you sure that you can actually use all those frequencies?
I didn't know that HTC had access to a radio that would bring in all four. That's great if they do...I'd just never heard of it.

Even the video is a bit dark. But the content is excellent and give a definite answer on X1i w/ T-mobile 3G (although I am using AT&T and waiting yr update for AT&T 3G).
BTW, do you have any A2DP headset? I want to see if x1 has the same issue w/ my ATT Tilt which A2DP connection which get dropped after answer the phone.

Mr. BuddyLee, never said that he was in a T-Mobile 3g area, but he made my day. Does anybody know what is the largest Sd Card or SdHC card capaciity for the Xperia X1 at this time.........?

same here i'd prefer this then a touch pro given the screen is bigger and better resolution better battery life
I tried to do a video with more light on the phone to show the text but the light would reflect off the camera. So I decided to go all dark and to get all the content of the screen clearly.

SanDisk is about to release 16GBs in November in stores, and reportedly they can already be found at online stores.

So Buddylee, you're in a Tmobile 3g area but you can't pick up 3g signal? That stink...btw which color do you have? Black or silver? I cant decide between black or silver.
I got black, and yea it stinks no 3g for the x1i. Ill just switch over to att instead of buying the x1a which supposedly may have the tmobile 3g.
I dont think the X1a has tmobile 3g band either, sonywill announce it on Nov 3 we shall see, but whatever, I got the G1 for that. Now I just have to decide what color to get.
Any luck with the GF's AT&T SIM? 3G on the X1i???
:siiiiiiiiiiiiiigh:
i see gsm 850 + 1900 AND umts 850 + 1900 on that video. i live in an 850 area for hspa. looking forward to hearing your results, buddy lee. i've been ready to place my order for SO long...

Word, got my black X1i this morning too. It was a bit of a downer to see the supported bands for the X1i too, although I didn't expect it to work on T-Mo's USA 3G. I'm making the switch to AT&T too so no need to worry.
The panels are cool just wish you could set a default one at boot (but won't be long before an XDA hack allows it). I haven't seen any slowness on them as of yet but it only been a day. Also, I'm just getting into the SDK Panel plug-in for VS Studio which looks somewhat promising. Plus, can't wait to see what some of the XDA devs can do with it.
Nice video and good review....enjoy your X1!
BTW, if you're in the states and get an X1i, resist the urge to pick it up from the carrier then bring it back to work. I think I totalled about 30 minutes of real work and 5 or so hours of Xperia "work" after I got back from the DHL office, lol.

X1i vs X1a (need advice stat)

Ok, so the x1a got recalled and the x1i is being soled by addictedtophones.com. They currently have them in stock and have the black. Well I called them and the guy said that the x1i works with the 3g just as well as the x1a. If this is true than why would anyone want the x1a over the x1i due to the better video quality?
This website also comes with a 4gb memory card and a purchasable 1 or 2 year warranty. So, the question is, should I wait or purchase this phone, especially since I can get it now and with better stuff? What are the pros and cons?

Because if u are in an area with 850 and no 1900 u wouldnt get 3g. But for people like me in the city the X1i is a must without a doubt. Im on 1900 and get atleast 2 bars with HSDPA everywhere i go except into deep parts of buildings where I tend to use wifi or actual computers.

maybe it's like Wii or WiiFit, cant make them fast enough?
i ordered my X1a from sonystyle.com, and i already got my X1a !

i ordered from sonystyle.com, so they got my email. so where is my recall email??

Ok, lets say half of the time I live in a big city (Birmingham, AL) where there is 3g (at 5bars) and the other half I live in a very rural area where it runs off of the edge network and you might get 3 bars and there is no chance possible of getting 3g. Will the phone still work and receive internet as well as my at&t tilt? This is the determining factor of which one I get... thanks for your response so far!
I found this: http://www.wireless.att.com/download/GPRS_coverage_leg.pdf which like I said half of the time I live in birmingham and the other half I live in a place in the middle of birmingham and atlanta. So would the x1i be good idea or a horrible idea. Sorry I don't exactly understand all of this.
And would sony cover the same warranty on the x1i as they would the x1a in the US?

It was only the x1a black that got recalled due to a crack in the screen i believe. Not 100% sure on that. But, seeing as you have the x1a silver, your's is perfectly fine to my knowledge.
Att 3g runs on either 850 or 1900 spectrum. First you have to identify which spectrum you have running in your area ... I am assuming that you got 850 but I may be wrong double check it) Ok so if you have 1900 spectrum with the 3g in the area then u get 3g with the X1i. If you have 850 spectrum with att 3g in your area you will only get edge speeds. If at home you only get edge, then ... actually im a bit tired its sunday evening ... ill simplify this so i wouldnt confuse myself
1. Birmingham, AL check the map to see if its the 1900 spectrum running if yes then u get 3g on the xperia.
2 Birmingham, AL only 850 spectrum you only get edge on xperia
3. Will the phone work and receive internet as your tilt ... yes only on edge depending on if you are using it at home. But if you are in the 3g area of Birmingham, AL and 1900 spectrum is running then u get 3g.
Mind you remember this ... att 3g runs on either 1900 or 850. The X1i only has 1900 so if you are in an area that has 1900, you are good to go. If you are in an area that only has 850 then u only get edge. But either way you will still get voice and internet no matter where you go and att has service there. 3g only comes into play where has the 1900 rollout. eg where i live in nyc we have both 1900 and 850, so maybe you have both in your area but check the map and see. I am too tired to do it.
Ok i was looking at the map, i see red in parts of alabama, red is good ... too tired to look for birmingham, but understand this, 3g for the x1i only runs on 1900 in the us. If you arent in that area you get edge speeds right across the board and everything else works normally.

You are awesome and I love you! Haha, no but seriously thank you so much! I believe that I might as well get the x1i from what I've heard.
Really there is only 2 questions left.
1. Will Sony honor the support/warranty as well as the x1a vs the x1i in the US?
2. Is there any difference in speeds with the x1a vs x1i on 3g if both of them are accessing the 1900?
Please do not feel obligated to answer these tonight. Go get some rest and thankyou so much for all of your help!

X1a vs X1i
I live in a "fringe" area outside of Atlanta. I had both phones and he X1a held 3G 95% of the time and the X1i was maybe 40%. I didn't take the phones into the city for better coverage testing as I work from home and needed the 3g where I am the most. If you are in a coverage area where 1900 is strong, jump on it ( x1i) Great phone, I am one of the few it seems like to have a perfernce of silver over black on this one......

Than why did Sony tell me the black was recalled and no one I've talked to have received the e-mail saying that the silver was? That's why Sony said yesterday that BestBuy still has not gotten it yet due to software issues. And your wrong about it being released in the united states, it was to the bestbuy shipping department, they just had never put it online until the release date of december 7th, until it was recalled and they had to ship it back. It was released in the United States but just not to the public. Or at least all of this is what I have been told.

Did anyone get chance to test HD with 3G on North America network?

Why yes, the HD works great on all the 3G networks here in the US that support 900/2100 MHz.
Which is none.

They Made it clear to the public that the were not going to do such a thing. I live in Florida, I imported mine anyway, just cause.
I must say though, I also have the g1 which supports 3g and I don't notice that much of a speed difference because Opera mobile does such a kick ass job of rendering web pages.
Though, if your intertainment relies heavily on Youtube vids, than don't get the HD unless you have plentiful Wifi networks around.
I love my touch HD, the lack of US 3G don't really translate to much.
I hope you find this helpful

I am very confused here, many people are saying that the HD does not support Northern American 3G speed. And again some websites say it does. boygeniusreport.com say that it does.
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/12/19/htc-touch-hd-easter-egg-att-compatible-3g-bands/
if you go to htc.com and look up the frequencies it says
HSDPA/WCDMA:
*
Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz
* Up to 2 Mbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
*
Europe/Asia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
(Band frequency, HSUPA availability, and data speed are operator dependent.)
AT&T 3G networks operates on 850 and one more 1800 or 1900 not so sure. I also called htc and asked them if it will operate on AT&T 3G network and they said yes. Some posts online say that supposing it does not function on US 3G network you may be able to tweek the phone to a certain frequency..What do you guys think? I am so close in getting the HD, but i do not want to get a phone that does not work on AT&T 3G network
Any help would be much appreciated.
IT DOES NOT WORK ON AT&T 3G NOR ON ANY US 3G FOR THAT MATTER. I loved my HD but got tired of waiting and waiting if someone could open the usa 3G and had to admit to myself that the Iphone 3G is indeed the best phone out there. As much as i would say i hated the iphone i was completly wrong in saying this. So if you live in the us and use the internet and like games do yourself a favor and go the same route.

As much as i would say i hated the iphone i was completly wrong in saying this. So if you live in the us and use the internet and like games do yourself a favor and go the same route.

dude, stop telling people to get the iphone. people here are adults, and dont want a little kids toy. jeez, take your iphone and go to the iphone forums
yeeeh ..tell me this..why the hell would i want to get a phone that just not take video, no bluetooth file transfer, no copy..and much more..
its just amazing how stupid people are to fall in love in a stupid phone like that.
I got an HD yesterday and have it on AT&T and I have to say I'm really impressed. I'm going to put it side by side next to my Fuze tonight and see what kind of a hit 3G speed does to it but I didn't feel it was any slower than my Fuze on 3G going onto the net... YouTube was a bit slower to load initially but I didn't get it to play YouTube. The screen resolution is so high it really reminds you how poor YouTube quality video tends to be
oh and of course, there is no 3G on the HD
using operamini (best browser imo) there is almost no difference in speed. i only notice the lack of 3g when downloading big files or streaming youtube. i have wifi readily available in most places, so not a big problem. i cant imagine the battery life with 3g, so maybe its a good thing we dont have 3g
With the same network (HSDPA 2100), I've noticed that I can browse faster using my HD as a modem with my laptop; I think that the device is sometimes slower itself in displaying internet pages using opera.
about the 3G Network for North America, I can see
I have in the phone - options - BAND these:
1. UMTS (2100) + GSM (900+1800)
2. UMTS (850+1900) + GSM (850+1900)
3. UMTS (800+2100)
4. UMTS (850+2100) + GSM(900+1800)
5. UMTS (850) + GSM(900+1800)
and I can't see WCDMA (UMTS) 900 Mhz
Is there someone who have really tested the Blackstone under the following bands:
HSDPA-UMTS 800-850-900 Mhz
------------------------
HTC HD
ROM 1.13.401.0 (20428) ITA date 10/25/08
radio version 1.09.25.14
protocol 52.49a.25.26U
Will the Australian version work on US 3G. I have been reading the their version operates on same US 3G frequencies
if...
if i had a dollar for every thread on the Touch HD and the US networks...
turns out ill just have 6 dollars...
search please before posting this... or moderators please make this sticky...
Also, try the skyfire browser on the Touch HD.... (u will have to dig the forums for the alpha build that supports the screen resolution), the text isnt as sharp as opera... but so much faster.. in my tests... about 2.5 times faster than opera... (not opera mini) ... and browse to a youtube video... and then to break, or others.

Whoa whoa im sorry you get your feelings hurt so easy. It is my opinion, i loved the hd i really did but i also love 3G, being able to see my phone in sunlight, not having to finger tip/finger nail touch and i also love having games. Trust me i didn't want to get rid of the HD but now i dont regret it. I used to hate on the iphone ALOT to. And yes i dont have bluetooth transfers but i do have video. Once windows mobile makes improvements maybe i will go back to an HTC. Now if i wasn't in the usa and the 3G worked where i was i prob wouldn't have an iphone now. Also $199.00 Iphone 3G> $700 HTC HD Edge. And im not big iphone crazy person just made more scince. And also im sorry i should have said in my first post "a JAILBROKEN iphone is the best phone out right now."
Anyways back to the topic. What about the Aus version did that ever come out with us 3G bands????

If it has at least 1 of the usa 3G bands (850,1900) and you live in an area that uses the band the phone has then yes it will work. My guess would be that if it does have usa 3G its going to cost an arm and a leg.

Telstra 850 version working in USA on 3G

Hi
I stuck my neck out and purchased a Touch HD telstra version from a company in australia. It just came in today and it appears to be working well on the 3G band of ATT. I have the H in the signal bar and DSL report speed test 934 kbs. More to follow.
see this: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NPV2LJDG
This is awesome news...please keep us updated and also tell us where you got it from?
Thanks.

WOW, thats compared to my E connection in Chicago that tested at 150K and WIFI at 1100K.
Ouch, I might shed a tear. I'm definitally jelous of 3g in US. Stuck on roughly 230kbps on E with tmobile. Though paying $10 for unlimited data and 200 msgs is nice compared to the move to At&t. Im =( nonetheless, but congrats to you
BTW, anyone know if its a change in hardware or software (like in diamond) that adds the frequency?

Just done the same thing here. Great to hear that you are having success!! thanks for letting us know.
Have you put a new ROM on the thing yet Dutty or something else?
Is the telstra customisation as bad as we have been hearing?
Cheers,
Awesome, please let us know where you got it from. Also, if you don't mind, how much was it with shipping and how long did it take to get.

You have been quicker than me, I was writing the exact same questions
But yes guys, I really want to know in what store you found it.
Thanks !

Took 4 days, should have been 3 but customs held it up--needed a form filled out that I was using it for "testing" (I guess because its not FCC approved). Seller was great.
So far so good, flashed it and testing out some new roms.
3G works fine.
Getting used to the big screen and few buttons(had a polaris).
Damn, this is some amazing news if true....
I just recently got an Xperia X1a, but the HTC Touch HD was definitely my first choice. But the 3G thing was a deal-breaker for me since I really wanted something that was speedy on the browsing.
I absolutely love my X1 but this is making me wonder if I should return it....
MAN, I hope this is just a myth, lol!
How sweet it is
$826 plus shipping is a considerable amount. It doesn't surprise me that the OP is able to get 3G. I wonder where the user is located. It might make a difference if everybody will get 3G in the United States. I wish there was some kind of map / key that would identify where the 850 / 1900 3G signals were at in North America. Congrats on having 3G with the HD in the United States. I am quite jealous I must say.
I am in north Florida.
BTW saw some posts about bluetooth skips.
Using Dutty 1.9 rom and pocket player, perfect sound with a 64 bitpool even with internet usage. Kept the stock radio.

Really? That doesn't surprise you? All the threads I've read in the past were talking about how disappointing it was to not get 3G in the U.S. with the HD. And how it was most likely a hardware issue (although that is still up for debate). Most people were even skeptical about the Aussie version.
I think if you were to hit up an AT&T wireless store, they could show you which areas have the 3G signals, they did for me. Although I'm not sure if they'd be able to specify if it's an 850 signal area.

Exactly. I know where all the 3G areas are in the US they just won't be able to tell me on what frequency.
The Xperia works on the 1900mhz signal only and gets 3G in some areas. That's why I was not surprised.

Ahh, I see I see.
I got a big fat H with a box around it on my Xperia (HSDPA I think), which I was told by another poster is actually a lil faster than 3G.
So does that mean my area has only 1900mhz signal? Or not necessarily...
I'm really considering returning my Xperia now hahahah
Anyone can tell what make the different from the T8285 and T8282, both of them have the same hardware.....how can the T8285 support 3G, i use my T8282 to flash the telstra rom but still cant get the 3G even the model name have changed to T8285. I still dont believe that is the hardware issue

You've put the Telstra software on a T8282, and don't get 3G.
Yet you still don't think it's hardware!?
Just ordered mine...oh man, 4 days is too long.....why is it only 4:00AM in Australia.....comeon ship it now already
From a differnt thread on the 850-1900 discussion:

Telstra T8285 fro EBAY AU Unlocked?
I have been tempted to order it on Ebay as well. It will be my first purchase on Ebay.... From what I can see the Telstra T8285 is the one I want and It says it's unlocked. I plan to pop my AT&T SIM card in and expect it to work on the 850 3g band. Am I missing anything else?? I'm pretty sure the folks who have already bought one have got it from the same source in AU. If I get the nerve to do this I will be selling my T8282.
Thanks

unlocking tmobile to use on att

i have a dvp on att, but the keyboard is broken. i also have a tmobile dvp. i got an unlock code and i am plannign to use it with my att sim.
im wondering tho, will my connection or signal be less than optimal on the att network?
anyone know?
I'm going to offer a preliminary response. Others please respond with more specifics.
Your new T-Mobile DVP's 3G band will be set to UMTS 1700/2100. AT&T's 3G band is UMTS 850/1900. Their highest shared standard is EDGE, which means you only get 2G speed
I've heard some buzzings that AT&T and T-Mobile DVP hardware is exactly the same, and possibly that changes made in the EM Engineering Mobile app, or a process or updating the phone using AT&T cabs will set the proper band selection. I would be interested to know more about this myself.
You may just want to swap the keyboard. Sounds easier to me.

yeah I think the buzzings were just all buzz peeps playing with the em app never could quite release them of their carrier frequency jail.. Seems like the dvp just cant dance the penta dance.
I second the keyboard swap! I posted the service manual just recently and the dvp shouldn't be too hard..
wow thanks for the guid3e!!! gonna try this asap.

It's not that much more work to get to the screen/glass... make sure to clean/seal it when you're in there too since the dust issue is so annoying. Ruins the sexiness of using it. And man I've never came across a DVP with no dust on the screen. Others might be luckier, but even my new DVP had (minor) dust after a couple of weeks. Sigh. Oh hey a cowboy emoticon
