Hi guys,
I want my jade to check emails automatically, but only if WiFi is available.
I have no idea how to realize it in the setting. When using periodic check, my jade builds up a umts/gprs connection .
I don’t like to delete my GPRS profile or to insert incorrect settings, because I like to use it manually sometime.
Cheers,
ratsche
I guess you can do that in connection settings - connections - advanced (Einstellungen - Verbindungen - Verbindungen - Erweitert at my phone)
There you can set which connections shall be used automatically
you can set with following setting per my telco said:
-Start> Settings> Connections> Connections> Advanced tab> select Network tab> Network Management:
-Under Network Management screen, set both 'Programs that auto.... using' drop down list to "My Work Network".
i also use NoData in case anything failed to work so!
Lastly, i always check applications whether they are connected to gprs WITHOUT my notice.

Hi,
thanks for your help. What do you mean by NoData, the setting in the communication manager?
I guess, you are checking applications manually?
Yesterday my moble used GPRS without my permission again :/ (without your settings). I started WiFi to connect to my Exchange server and for some sort of reason, my jade started a GPRS connection, though there was the WiFi icon. I realized the connection only via the "spb wireless monitor" and after the synchonisation.

Hi Surf77
May I know how you check if the application is connected to gprs, instead of Wifi or wireless LAN?? I asked because sometime I use weather update.

Hi,
I have had a search to see if this has been covered before but maybe I am using the wrong query.
I have an O2 Exec with the latest O2 Rom, and now when I do an email send and receive, the GPRS connection stays up. Whereas I could have sworn in the earlier ROM it disconnected after the send/receive.
I spoke to O2 and they assured me that it is supposed to do that, and since I only get charged for actaul data transfer, I can sit connected to GPRS all day for free (is this correct).
Now, my main question is. Say GPRS is up and connected, and I turn on WIFI or plug into my PC using the charger/sync cable and then do a send and receive. Will the Exec use these free connections or still route data over the GPRS?
I did a test and it looked as though when I did this, the GPRS connection was shut down, as after a send/receive and then disable WIFI, the connection setting showed a large U and not the connected icon.
I am now sitting with a GPRS connection active, email is set to manual and I have Pocket Weather set to 'Auto update on connection' and 'Auto update on Active Sync', but 'Use connection manager' is disabled as is 'Force a connect when not available'.
Should this mean that no data is used at all and that I can sit connected at no cost.
Sorry for the long rambling post, but I am a complete newbie to all this GPRS pda thing.

/Mad
related question - how to stop gprs connecting automatically
My wifi router at home is dodgy and sometimes the signal drops - this means my exec switches over automatically to GPRS (I'm not in a 3G area) and starts whacking up a big data bill before I realise. Is there anyway of getting it to ask me if I want to connect to GPRS - rather than it just telling me thats what its doing? Can't turn the phone off cos I still need to receive calls.
I did think of just scarmbling my connection settings, but now I've upgraded to the latest O2 rom the connections settings page does not show any existing connections! (I also can't get TomTom to run at all now but I guess I'll work through that one :-( )
Thanks,
John
I believe this is what you are looking for. Y
ou can set which connections programs use for thier internet access in Settings -> Connections -> Connections -> Advanced, Select Networks.
Choosing My Work Network or My ISP should stop programs sucking up your money.
Thanks PReDiToR I've tried that but it then gives me a 'cannot connect' popup instead of using the wifi - it seems as if there has to be an accessible gprs connection for it to ignore before it will try wifi :-o
What does everyone else do? Maybe you're all rich or the company pays for your data?
Thanks
Any luck yet with the GPRS / WiFi issue?? I have got the sam

Derrr...
EDIT: Hey I've just read what I've written below and its exavctly what Preditor suggested - funny didn't work when I tried ........ I guess it was because I was trying 'My ISP' without gprs settings - which complained - whereas 'My Work Network' without gprs settings allows the wifi to connect ... :?
I've now got a workaround for this - means going through the menus every time I DO want GPRS data - but thats rare till I get a better contract which will have to wait till my 12 months with O2 is up in November.. web'n'walk sounds good - unlimited gprs :-o - (could T-Mobile really tell when I was using my XDa as a modem for my laptop - which is forbidden in the terms of this contarct - and when I was just usng data for its own programs - which is allowed ??)
Anyway what I do is settings>connections>advanced>Select Networks> choose My Work Network for programs connecting to the internet. I have no gprs settings in My Work Network but it connects to wifi no problem.
So when I forget and I'm out of wifi range I get an error that it can't connect, so change the setting back to 'MY ISP' and GPRS kicks in.
A Today Screen shortcut to the Network Management screen would help - but I'm almost always using wifi so I haven't bothered.

Is there a way to disable or remove GPRS capability altogether? I don't have unlimited data and only wish to use wifi for inet access, but it keeps trying to connect to Cingular GPRS even though I removed it from the ISP settings completely.. Any ideas?

Goto
>Start >Settings >Connections > Network Cards > Network Adapters
In the "My Network card connects to:" prompt, select the value "Work" instead of "The Internet".
Did that, and if I go into IE and try to navigate to a page, it still says "Connecting to Cingular GPRS" and then connects to it... Any more ideas? It "might" be an IE-only problem since Agile Messenger tells me it can't connect when there is no connection, but IE is autoconnecting to GPRS no matter what settings I choose.
Call cingular tell them you want GPRS Data blocked, when they do it, your phone will show an x next to the signal strength indicator (where the GPRS/EDGE icon lives)
That sounds like the best idea so far... Anyone else got a better idea?

Also... after you do the above, goto >Start >Settings >Connections; and click on the "Connections" icon then click on the "Advanced" tab then click on "Select Networks" and choose "My Work Network" for both dropdown box. This should work.
Did all that.. IE still trying to connect to Cingular GPRS.. I tried to completely remove it from everything and somehow it still wants to connect if no connection exists already.. weird...

Thas wierd. It works on mine.. If no connection exists, IE will try to conenct to GPRS but it will fail on mine. It will only work when I am conencted to WiFi. Which ROM version do you have? I have 2.24.10.1 WWE.
if u disable this option can u still send MMS?
2.25 cingular as on the ftp under ROM_Other or whatever...

Is there any other way to do this??? I've been having the same problem with this new ROM. No matter what i do (select "My Work Network", fiddle with the GPRS settings), it ALWAYS wants to connect to the GPRS.
I'm having the EXACT same problem as the guy who started this post.
Thanks!
OK.. Either call the cell company and tell them to remove internet capabiltiy OR you can try REMOVING your "media Net" connection from your connections. It's in the place where you select between My ISP, Work, Media Net... Just go into Media Net and click on remove/delete or whatever and see if that works for ya.

it doesn't work, no matter what i do, it tries to connect via GPRS, and then it tries to dial a modem # starting with +1415XXXXXXX. its weird. i used to be able to just delete the ISP key, but not anymore. im running 2.24 Summiter ROM.
you can always create a new connection in connections and leave it blank, then it errors with a unable to connect message, and you can always switch it back if you want the access in the future
Any idea as to how you can switch off gprs automatically after each time checking your pop email??

Just curious,...why do you have this phone?
I have a Cingular 8125 (WIZA100) that I use about 50% of the time in areas that have no coverage. But, in those locations I do have access to many WiFi hotspots.
I too would like to disable GPRS search (my phone seems to spend much of its time trying to connect to the non-existent network.) Obviously calling the carrier does not help in this situation.
I assume there is a registry hack (or some such) to kill it. Has anyone found anything on the phone that will kill GPRS but keep WiFi Running?
Txs
I have not TRIED it but I would suggest trying out Opera as it probably is not integrated with GPRS as much as IE is. Just a hunch I am going to try as well.
SInce GPRS cost 15sek per mb here it is quite costly to accidently turn on the function. Is there any way to for software to ask for permission instead of activate the gprs automatically? Or that the gprs connection must be activace manualy before a connection can be established by the software?

This part can be easily solved: Go to the Advanced tab in Connections, and in the first list select 'my work network'.
So I have to change it to back GPRS each time I want to use it?
i do so, prankie, even if it is a bit annoying...

Hi You need this program MoDaCo_NoData.CAB it`s turn on or turn off the connection GPRS.
I found this on Modaco.com
http://www.modaco.com/content/Pocket-PC-Software/246171/New-FREE-Utility/
I agree, MoDaCo_NoData.CAB is the best tool at the moment to switch the data connection on/off,
Dear ALL,
I need to know how to disable data Connection (Edge, 3G), because my device sometimes connect to Edge or 3G service automatically, I dont have any running programms that needs data connection or auto update !!!
At the same time I want my phone to connect only when recieving MMS messages !
Please advice !
Hi there,
you can install 'HD Tweak' and Disable the items in 'Data (GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA)'.
You can also try Nodata application from Modaco
=> http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/
Edit : Caution, Nodata stop ALL data (MMS too) so cymagnus's solution is better
nodsata can toggle mms on/off.
I cant get that HD Tweak to open, all i get is a long page full of codes and such, any suggestions?

Can you not do it manually like this? Start/Settings/Connections Tab/Connections button/Advanced tab/Select Networks button. Then in the pop up where it says "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:
Select "MY ISP".
I think MMS will still run?

It's very easy and you don't need any tools!
Just go to Start--> Settings --> Connections --> Connections --> Advanced --> Secelct Networks and select 'My Work Network' from the dropdown menus.
after selecting "my work network," my main screen still shows the icon "E" does it mean anything?

Having loaded Nodata and then Tweak and found it also had a 'nodata' element I then discovered the HD built in Connection settings.
Seems to work fine.

Hi. I'm not shure what you wanted to do but i'm having the following problem:
In network management if I have selected "programs ...that connect to the internet should use->Mobile Internet" then it allways uses this connection, even if i'm on wifi....and that's not good for me. If i select "my work network" and i'm not connected to wifi, it doesn't go to gprs.
I don't want to manualy set Data connection off every time i'm on wifi and then turn on when i want to use gprs/3g.
How do you do it?

If you select "Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using "yourproviderGPRS" (or whatever you have got that is relevant to data connection) it should connect to the internet using WIFI when WIFI is enabled and GPRS when WIFI is off. That's how mine works anyway. If I set it to "my ISP" GPRS will not autimatically connect until I manually change the settings. Hope that makes sense.
It maybe is a poor mans solution, but whenever I travel abroad I simply switch to a copy of my active account in which I deleted the password of my dataconnection. That way i am sure it won't connect. Whenever it tries to connect it will simply ask for the pw first.
You are on an active data connection only when you see the "E" as part of the 4 bars cell phone signal icon.
Not sure ? Then just tap the title bar where you see the "E" and the grey "System Status" screen comes on. here, tap on the "E" icon here and you will see the connectivity status message that says something like "No active connections" or similar.
Basically the E means that you are on "EDGE" signal.
Hope this helps !!
Cheers !!

Has anybody worked out who has the final say?
I have the Standard Built In Connections, NoData and HDTweak.
From what I can see the Built in gets overridden, i.e. with Built In set to Off using the Internet outside of a WiFi area, stills connects via the cell network.
I think adjusting the settings as suggested previously is the best route.

What exactly is the problem? When connected via wifi, you are unable to surf the net, update stock & weather? Or is it just internet access?
Go to Settings > connections > wifi > wireless networks > network adaptors and set 'My network cards connects to' to 'the internet'
Would also change Settings > connections > wifi > advanced > power mode and set this at best performance
Let me know if this works
Is the problem with just surfing the internet, or no internet at all? You can try to update the weather and/or stocks, just to see if the problem is with the connectivity (in which case you should try to follow the previous advice) or with the browser itself (for example with Black Perl ROM the first time you open Opera, there is a problem with rendering of the page, so you have to close it and reopen again).

Are you connected to active sync or wmdc while you are trying to access the net (i.e. do you have your phone plugged into you pc)?
Check |START|SETTINGS|CONNECTIONS|USB To PC| and make sure you have "Enable advanced network functionality" checked.
If all else fails, soft reset, if that fails... hard reset
If in Internet explorer is ok then Check opera:config for a wrong proxi !
(opera keep setings from last conections)

the 3g is connected but still cant browse the internet... i dont think theres a problem with my opera... since i tried to update the weather it appears the same errors..
I had this problem today - wifi connected but opera and weather updates not working.
I selected
Start->Settings->Connections(tab)->Connections(icon)->Advanced->Select Networks
and set "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" = "My Work Network" (was "Orange Internet").
This worked fine and I can now surf and download. I don't know if it will affect my 3g connection yet but I will try it later.
install schaps advanced config and disable "Proxy Auto Detection" in Internet Explorer section
Is your problem similar to this?

Sorry for not having the solution, just trying to determin what would be the cause.
Which firmware do you have?
perhaps it will be easier to change it directly in the registry.
one can see that this is not relevant to internet explorer only.
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"EnableAutoDetect"=dword:00000000
