What exactly is the problem? When connected via wifi, you are unable to surf the net, update stock & weather? Or is it just internet access?
Go to Settings > connections > wifi > wireless networks > network adaptors and set 'My network cards connects to' to 'the internet'
Would also change Settings > connections > wifi > advanced > power mode and set this at best performance
Let me know if this works
Is the problem with just surfing the internet, or no internet at all? You can try to update the weather and/or stocks, just to see if the problem is with the connectivity (in which case you should try to follow the previous advice) or with the browser itself (for example with Black Perl ROM the first time you open Opera, there is a problem with rendering of the page, so you have to close it and reopen again).

i've tried the settings but it seems to appear the same problem...
when i try to open yahoo, it says "could not locate remote server, bla bla bla... make sure your internet connection is active and check whether other applications that rely on the same connection working".
i also tried to update the weather and it says "there was a connection error while attempting to download weather data".
any idea?

Are you connected to active sync or wmdc while you are trying to access the net (i.e. do you have your phone plugged into you pc)?
Check |START|SETTINGS|CONNECTIONS|USB To PC| and make sure you have "Enable advanced network functionality" checked.
If all else fails, soft reset, if that fails... hard reset
If in Internet explorer is ok then Check opera:config for a wrong proxi !
(opera keep setings from last conections)

my hd wasnt connected to pc... i even tried to connect using my 3g...
the 3g is connected but still cant browse the internet... i dont think theres a problem with my opera... since i tried to update the weather it appears the same errors..
I had this problem today - wifi connected but opera and weather updates not working.
I selected
Start->Settings->Connections(tab)->Connections(icon)->Advanced->Select Networks
and set "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" = "My Work Network" (was "Orange Internet").
This worked fine and I can now surf and download. I don't know if it will affect my 3g connection yet but I will try it later.
install schaps advanced config and disable "Proxy Auto Detection" in Internet Explorer section
Is your problem similar to this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=508418
Sorry for not having the solution, just trying to determin what would be the cause.
Which firmware do you have?
perhaps it will be easier to change it directly in the registry.
one can see that this is not relevant to internet explorer only.
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"EnableAutoDetect"=dword:00000000

Hi everybody, I've just recieved my wireless LAN card and I'm having troubles finding documentation on how to do what I want to do. I actually want to do three things with my PDA once WiFi is working.
A I'd like to be able to ActiveSync through WiFi instead of connecting the cable. My laptop has a wireless LAN card, but I don't know how or if I need to set up a special connection between the two.
B I would like to be able to connect with my Magician through my laptop, so I can use its internet connection on my Magician.
C My Magician should also be able to connect to a wireless access point at my college, maybe I can have two network settings on my Magician so I wouldn't have to switch between them all the time?
Thanks very much from a Magician newbie .
Alright, scrap B, I managed to do that but I had to turn off WEP... If anyone knows how to keep the connection secure, let me know . But syncing still doesn't work via WiFi.
Edit: Scrap A as well, with a little bit of tinkering I think I got it done .
I can get all the items working but using my Wi-Fi network and not an Ad-Hoc.
All you need to do is go into Settings>Connections>Connections>Advanced>Select Networks> Here you select the "Internet" for both. This way you I use IE or email etc it connects into the internet and when I select Active Sync it also connects via the internet setting where it see's my "ActiveSync" running on my PC and connects. Make sure the tick box is tick against "Allow Network" in the activesync settings.
As for the Work side of things i dont have a wi-fi network but from memory once you set up the "Network Cards" on your PPC it will connect to which ever one it see's first, someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

Hi, my spectec suddenly stopped working. The list show my wifi as available but am unable to go on the net. I have tried reinstalling the driver, doesn't work. This started yesterday, I have not changed or install anything else. Could it be a faulty card or faulty mini ? My wifi is working great on my notebook. WEP is off. What else can I do ? Thanks.
If all fails I try a hard reset and only install the Wi-Fi driver and go from there.
Do a complete backup with say Sprite Backup that way you can restore your PDA back to original.
The other option is to use the modified driver from the E300 Card found in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=27069&highlight=spectec+e300
But you need to uninstall the SPECTEC driver first.
Thanks ampda. Have uninstalled the spectec and will use the E300 as suggested. See how this works. Will only go to hard reset as a last resort or perhaps just wait for the universal ???

Hellow, can you learn me how to connect active sync via wifi please ? Thank you. I have that same card
Alright, on your PC ActiveSync:
- File -> Connection Settings. I marked the USB and Ethernet options.
On your PDA:
- Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Network cards. Here select the network your PDA should connect to. It should connect to "The Internet", on the tab "Network key" I have selected Open and Disabled, because I use an ad-hoc connection.
That should do it, just hit sync on your PDA !
You may have to disable and enable your wireless connection on your PC to get things to work.

I'm using version 3.8 and I see that option :O! Here, let me take a screenshot for you.
ActiveSync 4 has no syncing over network, it has been taken out. Go back to 3.8 if you wanna use it.

You know MS developers have o get AS4 ready for the WM 5.0 release because WM 5.0 needs AS4. They were a little lazy so they got deadline problems and have to take network sync out for now. They will put it back in in a future update but AS4 as well as AS4.1 dont offer it right now.
it don't ghet it to work
I just bought the new T-Mobile (USA) MDA a couple days ago, a version of the HTC Wizard.
I have been able to connect with GPRS/EDGE, and seem to be getting EDGE speed, which is nice (my first EDGE phone).
However, no such luck with Wi-fi.
At my house, I can easily connect, at all times, with a few different wi-fi networks, with my wi-fi enabled laptop, and with my older PPC--an IPAQ 2210, with Spectec SDIO Wi-Fi card, can browse the web via Wi-Fi, etc.
The MDA does connect to Wi-FI, appears to be connected to it. (After turning it on in Connection Manager, of course.) But I cannot access any web sites with it. On trying to do so with PIE, I always get the error message:
"The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost, Check the connection and try again later."
I have not once been able to access one web site via Wi-Fi, with the MDA.
Can anyone help with this?
Thank you.
I ahve the same problem and have not figured out how to solve this...
Can anyone help us?
same problem here, also with t-mobile as provider. can it be a problem related to t-mobile???

I have exactly the same problem
I guess you could try going under "Settings" "Connections" "Network Card" and make sure your network card is set to connect to "The Internet"
Select your wireless card and then make sure the drop down says "The Internet" and hit ok.
Also, make sure your GPRS Connection settings aren't setup to use T-Mobile's proxy. When your gprs is setup to use a proxy for web browsing, PIE will attempt to use the proxy with any connection. And by proxy, I'm not talking about an APN or anything.
Are you running security on your router? If so try shutting it off to test or try to connect to someone elses WiFi network to test.

I spoke with a TMob customer service rep about this a couple weeks ago, and this is basically what he told me to do. A T-Mobile HotSpot (Starbucks, etc) should work without making any changes. But if you want to use your own WiFi connection, you have to do the following:
Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections Icon
Select Advanced Tab -> Select Networks
Change first dropdown to "My Work Network".
Click OK, OK.
Then when you want to roam with GPRS/EDGE again, you have to change it back to "T-Mobile GPRS".
Very annoying to say the least. If anyone knows a better way to do this, I'd love to hear about it.
This works for me:
Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections Icon
Select Advanced Tab -> Select Networks
Change the first dropdown to My Work Network
Change the second dropdown to T-Mobile GPRS
Make sure My Work Network is set to connect to the internet, but has NO proxy settings.
Make sure T-Mobile GRPS is set to connect to the internet, but HAS proxy settings.
Magic!
frycow, you rock!!
That worked perfectly!! I hated that I had to keep switching networks whenever I wanted to go online via GPRS or wifi!!
Thanks!!!
frycow,
wow. that sounds great. but I can't get it working. could you take a couple minutes to walk me (and I'm sure others too) through your exact settings? especially the proxy settings.
thanks!
frycow is a freakin champ....that did the trick!! I've been WAITING to get this working!!
AHHHH, AND IT FINALLY GOT MY POCKET MSN TO START WORKING TOO!!!! Still doesn't work on GPRS, but it certainly works on Wi-Fi!! I suppose the last thing would be to get it working on both!! regardless, this is SWEET!!
I canĀ“t get it working
When I Change the first dropdown to My Work Network and after that tryn to sync without having wifi enabled, the device does not connect with GPRS..., solutions...
frycow, hazchem, djswivel:
Could one of you help out Paltkugen and I? Both of us can't get it working. If you could let us know the specific settings, including the proxy settings, I would really appreciate it. Its so frustrating to know it works for some people, but not being able to get it going.
Thanks!
I did EXACTLY what fry posted....follow this carefully
Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections Icon
Select Advanced Tab -> Select Networks
Change the first dropdown to My Work Network
Change the second dropdown to T-Mobile GPRS
Click Edit on the My Work Network dropdown -> Proxy Settings Tab
Check the first box (This network connects to the internet), but NOT the second (This network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet)
Now do the same for the T-Mobile GRPS settins in the edit menu, only check both boxes this time. Then type in 216.155.165.50 as the proxy server. From there you should be good.

That is exactly what I did too. Just tried it again and I can't use GPRS to surf. I have Wifi turned off. GPRS is not connected. I open PIE and go to some URL (google.com). GPRS starts connecting and successfully connects to T-Mobile GPRS.
Then, for about 30-60 seconds, the status bar says "Locating". Then an alert pops up that says "The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later."
Next, I turn on WiFi. It conects to my local WiFi network. It is still connected to T-Mobile GPRS too. I go back to PIE. As soon as I try to goto a URL, the GPRS connection drops, and again it says "Locating..." for a while. Then the same alert pops up again.
So now that GPRS isn't connected and just WiFi, I try going to the URL again. Same results.
Next I try turning off WiFi. Now there are no connections. I restart WiFi and there is just a WiFi connection. Same results in PIE.
I thought maybe the proxy is the problem, so I turned off the proxy in GPRS. When I do this, the checkbox "This network connects to the internet" won't stay checked. Even if I check it and click ok, when I go back it is unchecked. And when I did this, I couldn't even connect with GPRS. And with WiFi on, it would connect to Wifi, but going to a page would immediately pop up an alert that says "Cannot Connect with current connection settings. To change you connection settings, tap Settings."
I added the proxy back in and then tried changing the GPRS access point name from wap.voicestream.com to internet2.voicestream.com and internet3.voicestream.com. internet2 wouldn't even make a connection, but internet3 did. however, i still couldn't locate pages in PIE. So I changed it back to wap. I think my unlimited GPRS plan is configured the VPN way, so I remember having to use internet2 or internet3 in the past.
Could the proxy server not be working right for me? Is it possible that I cannot locate the proxy because I'm configured in a non-standard way (with a different access point - internet3) than most?
I think I'll call tmo and see if I can get changed to the regular AP (wap). I'm not using VPN stuff right now anyway. If anyone has other ideas, please let me know.
Thanks again!
I think i have a work around. but involes changing it back and forth when switching btwn wifi and gprs..
created two connections.
one with proxy and one without.
im only able to surf gprs with proxy.
when connecting via GPRS set both networks to connect to PROXY.
when using WiFi, set both networks to connect using NOPROXY.
that should work. at least it worked for me. tried only 2 pages and it loaded for both. GPRS used myvoicestream and wifi google.

Earlier today I had been trying to get VM Net Browser or Resco File Explorer to work, and they *were* working, albeit very sporadically. Sometimes I could see whole windows network complete with shared files and directories, other times I could browse to my computer and it wouldn't show anything as being shared. Looking for a solution, i found this thread.
I followed the recommendations of the previous posts and got exactly the same results as yowzator, including the weird thing with the "This network connects to the internet" checkbox unchecking. My GPRS access point is also named wap.voicestream.com - not sure if that matters.
However, I know that I was having at least partial wi-fi success before trying this fix or I wouldn't be able to have seen my home network. So I gave up on this fix and put everything back to the default - GPRS for programs that automatically connect to the internet, no proxy, and My Work Network for programs that automatically connect toa private network, with "This network connects to the internet" unchecked because it's impossible to check it and expect it to stay checked.
I tried surfing around to a few pages with wifi only (connections shows me connected to my network, I turned off the phone icon in the comm settings, and tapping on the connectivity icon on the taskbar didn't have GPRS listed) and amazingly, some of them worked - though the "locating" process seemed to take a while, they sometimes seemed to load faster than with GPRS (especially if I let my MDA go to sleep and then turn it back on again).
And then they don't work again, without me doing anything. So I don't think the fix we've been trying is a true fix to the problem - if it was then then pages would *never* load with the proxy disabled. Right?
I've been wondering if the "modem" tab under My Work Network is supposed to be blank . . . even if it's using wifi it seems like a poor UI design to not have a checkbox or something saying "this connection is for wifi and not dialup".
I am using the 2.17 ROM update. My wireless router is a D-link DI-624 extreme g. I'm using WEP encryption.
I am crying . . . tears . . . of confusion.
SOLUTION!?
This works for me (suggested in another thread):
1. Add the following to the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS:
DWORD dot11SupportedRateMaskG=8
(Note that there is already a key in the registry called "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS: DWORD dot11SupportedRateMask=1" - you should leave this alone)
2. Do a soft reset.
3. Go to your wi-fi settings -> Power Mode tab -> Best Performance (without this step it didn't work for me)
4. Turn on wi-fi and connect to anything in internet explorer. It should seem blazing fast compared to GPRS.
Note that this assumes you haven't done any of the fixes in this thread. That is to say, leave it with GPRS for programs that automatically connect to the internet (with no proxy), and My Work Network for programs that automatically connect to a private network, with "This network connects to the internet" unchecked because it's impossible to check it and expect it to stay checked.
So far (for a few minutes anyway) this is working for me! Even Resco File Explorer seems to mostly work - I can map my PC's shared folders and see my stuff reliably, as far as I can tell. VM Net Browser is still wonky though.
The thread this solution comes from is http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=38898&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc
Hi,
tried that solution
(I have a thread below)
still falls over on "locate".
I have no home network so I have never got anything working - connects fine on a public hotspot, but as I say, fails on locate.
I've had enough - may either phone T-mobile pay CS - something I really don't want to do out of principle - or just send teh phone back.
any new info on this? can seem to get it to work.
i have configures it many ways as suggested above. only time i was able to browse on wifi was with no proxie was set up. i connect through another network, (the mda automatically hooks you up to all avalible networks) but that only lasted a few minutes.
is there even a chance i could someone at tmobile even help me??? anyone here call them and get got service/help with getting it to work?
thanks

Dear ALL,
I need to know how to disable data Connection (Edge, 3G), because my device sometimes connect to Edge or 3G service automatically, I dont have any running programms that needs data connection or auto update !!!
At the same time I want my phone to connect only when recieving MMS messages !
Please advice !
Hi there,
you can install 'HD Tweak' and Disable the items in 'Data (GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA)'.
You can also try Nodata application from Modaco
=> http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/
Edit : Caution, Nodata stop ALL data (MMS too) so cymagnus's solution is better
nodsata can toggle mms on/off.
I cant get that HD Tweak to open, all i get is a long page full of codes and such, any suggestions?

Can you not do it manually like this? Start/Settings/Connections Tab/Connections button/Advanced tab/Select Networks button. Then in the pop up where it says "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:

It's very easy and you don't need any tools!
Just go to Start--> Settings --> Connections --> Connections --> Advanced --> Secelct Networks and select 'My Work Network' from the dropdown menus.
after selecting "my work network," my main screen still shows the icon "E" does it mean anything?

Having loaded Nodata and then Tweak and found it also had a 'nodata' element I then discovered the HD built in Connection settings.
Seems to work fine.

Hi. I'm not shure what you wanted to do but i'm having the following problem:
In network management if I have selected "programs ...that connect to the internet should use->Mobile Internet" then it allways uses this connection, even if i'm on wifi....and that's not good for me. If i select "my work network" and i'm not connected to wifi, it doesn't go to gprs.
I don't want to manualy set Data connection off every time i'm on wifi and then turn on when i want to use gprs/3g.
How do you do it?

If you select "Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using "yourproviderGPRS" (or whatever you have got that is relevant to data connection) it should connect to the internet using WIFI when WIFI is enabled and GPRS when WIFI is off. That's how mine works anyway. If I set it to "my ISP" GPRS will not autimatically connect until I manually change the settings. Hope that makes sense.
It maybe is a poor mans solution, but whenever I travel abroad I simply switch to a copy of my active account in which I deleted the password of my dataconnection. That way i am sure it won't connect. Whenever it tries to connect it will simply ask for the pw first.
You are on an active data connection only when you see the "E" as part of the 4 bars cell phone signal icon.
Not sure ? Then just tap the title bar where you see the "E" and the grey "System Status" screen comes on. here, tap on the "E" icon here and you will see the connectivity status message that says something like "No active connections" or similar.
Basically the E means that you are on "EDGE" signal.
Hope this helps !!
Cheers !!

Having loaded Nodata and then Tweak and found it also had a 'nodata' element I then discovered the HD built in Connection settings.
Seems to work fine.
Cheers

Has anybody worked out who has the final say?
I have the Standard Built In Connections, NoData and HDTweak.
From what I can see the Built in gets overridden, i.e. with Built In set to Off using the Internet outside of a WiFi area, stills connects via the cell network.
I think adjusting the settings as suggested previously is the best route.

hi!
I have problem connect internet using wi-fi on htc hd2.
Pda is connecting ok to router and when I open IE I am getting: cannot find server or dns error...
Folks, can U help, please!
Same problem!
I have exactly the same problem! I was able to connect to the internet via WiFi till two days ago. Then I have installed few usual applications (Resco file manager, couple of Touch X app. etc) and WiFi connection to the net is impossible, now. I have tried on few networks, but result was the same: it connects to the router, but not to the net...
Check this
settings - wireless controls - tap wifi (not the toggle, the words) - advanced - change network - tap the name of your wifi connection -
Check that 'connects to' says 'the internet' and NOT work. If it says 'work' it wont work.
Thanks, but that was not the reason... I clear storage, and now it works
It is set to Internet... Do you have some other idea Samsamuel? My storage seems to be OK: Program memory 55%, Storage memory 57%.
With "clear storage"(Start>settings>menu>all settings>System>Clear storage) I mean reset device to factory settings and configure again wifi settings and everything else reinstall all programs... do not to forget backup Your data
OK, thanks. I hope it will solve the problem...

commonly referred to as a hard reset.
Hi,
I had exactly the same problem. You must disable de Firewall of the router and it will solve the problem !!!!
