Hi. First of all, I have a uk sim-free X1 with t-mobile. My contract also includes web'n'walk which I selected so that I could use msn messenger and sites such as facebook anywhere I wanted without a wi-fi connection.
However, I've realised that my msn messenger will only connect via wi-fi and will not sign in if I'm using the data connection. This is strange as the data connection works fine for everything else, e.g whether updates, youtube, and opera browser.
I did search the past threads but didn't find an answer as most were about the other problem of not being able to use msn via wi-fi.
I'm hoping that there is an answer out there...Please help me. It's like the one thing that would make my phone almost perfect! Ty in advance.
That's weird! Because mine just connects with data connection and not via wi-fi.
Whenever I try to connect to msn via wi-fi, msn tells me that there is a connection problem :/
I get that same connection problem sign when i try via the data connection
I have the same problem - although I don't use msn that often - it still irritates me.
However, I discovered yesterday that fring works fine - if you install fring, you can use that to access msn - looks a little different, but works with a data connection.
Do you find your data connection to be slow - mine reminds me of the old dialup - I was expecting something more akin to broadband speeds
Good luck.
Gopes
P.S. If you do find a solution, please post on here.
Yes it is quite slow...but still i would be very thankful to find a fix for this issue!
Mine used to only work over wifi, then suddenly started working over data connection too, not sure why.
The only thing I know I've had to change was to untick the proxy option for the Tmobile connection as with that on gmail wouldn't work, maybe that helps with MSN too?
Overall I've found Live messenger pretty poor, it's very slow, especially to scroll contacts.
I've tried Nimbuzz, that allows access to everything, even Facebook and MySpace.

Omg thanks for this...this is the solution. Just untick the proxy option and you can sign in to msn messenger over data connection Yay thanks so much!!!

Can someone help me to get MSN messenger to work?
I did hear that it only works if you have a GPRS connection but I want it to work with WLAN.
Is there a way around this?
A Search on this forum didn’t reveal anything or I did something wrong to get it.
Cheers,
Drifter
hi, have my msn working via WLAN without any problems - what error msg's are you getting??
Hi,
It takes a wile before I get an error message and it looks like messenger is hanging.
After about 2 minutes it says "logon to msn messenger service failed because the service is not responding. Please try again later".
But if I use IE then I can log in.
Cheers,
Drifter
That could be because MSN is being typically slow - i quite often have the same problem. However, since enabling wireless G it has become more stable.
If you can get IE over wireless then i think you have a software / hardware problem - just a MS one
This can also happen if you do not have "Connects to Internet" checked in your work network setting. Check this and other Work / Internet list boxes and have a play ... it took me a while with the same problem but sorted it eventually.
Thanks for the tips but everything seems to be in order accept for MSN messenger.
If I check my firewall I can see that my wizard does connect to the internet.
My firewall logs says that it’s trying to connect to services.mobile.msn.com.
Hopefully it isn't the test rom I'm using
Hi All
Sorry if this is a duplicate thread, I searched but coudln't find anything.
My PiE works fine only under WiFi, but never seems to want to work over my mobile data connection.
My BBConnect, and HTC Home Weather can establish and use the connection no problems, but not with PiE.
Any suggestions on how I can fix this up
Thank you!
...actually pie isn't working at all even over WiFi.
I click on any link, it says connecting then it stops...
i would
1 check the setting in connection advanced to see if it was set to use the right connection to access the internet
2 try another browser then pie (it being the worst browser on the planet could be an issue)
3½ if special network settings for gateway and or dns was set i would remove them or change them to the connect ones

My other programs (BBConnect, HTC Weather) have no problems getting on.
Just PIE (was set for Rogers Internet) I also tried My Blackberry and HTC Home still updates, but not PIE....
I thought I would bump this.
I gave up and did a re-install. Everything was fine for a bit, and its back again.
All I have installed is SyncML Client, VJDevice Lock, Today Agenda, voice command BBConnect.
Its ONLY IE that won't work. I would really appreciate some help with this one!
So it is the blackberry software that is doing it. I think it is forcing you to use that, rather than the regular data connection.
If anyone can help me manage this, I would appreciate it.
Thank you!
I have a similar browser related problem...
Everything works on 3G, GPRS, WiFi, etc... EXCEPT PIE only does not work with WiFi, same symptoms you are receiving. I have to turn off the WiFi to get PIE to work. With WiFi on, email and all other connectivity programs can stilll get data from the web.
There is something here where PIE settings are somehow slightly different than the WiFi connection....
Anyone have any ideas? The fix for me would also fix the same issue for you...
...and a follow up to the issue, if I wanted to change the default browser in WM6 to NetFront of Opera, how would I go about doing that?
Hi,
I did search the whole forum for answers but in vain. Whenever I access weather tab and update the info, it updates using 3G/HSDPA.
But, what I want is to update using wifi at home. Is there an option to make it use wifi instead of 3G/HSDPA?
Pls lemme know coz it wud help me save a few penny
TIA
SK
Well I did the following.
1) As I don't want any applications (in background or by request) to update via any Phone Network I deleted the internet setting.
Now I can connect via USB or Wifi and then download, both work.
If I do it when I am not connected then I get an error message (as I have no internet connection setup).
So this works for me but also means I have to remake a internet connection if and when I want to download of phone network.
I have no flat rate data plan so its my only choice, maybe others have a better idea.
really strange, mine uses wifi and if there is no wifi, it relies on gprs.

Which is correct as far as I can see.
The issue here seems to be he does not want to download via gprs and I have yet to find an option that allows you to turn it off.
The choices are Download automatically
Download weather when roaming
What is missing is that stops you downloading via GPRS but allows you to download via WIFI and when connected.
Problem

Thanks 2 all for ur reply
Actually the problem is:
I have router at home and my touch hd connects to wifi to update mails, etc.. But when I switch to weather and update, it somehow doesnt identify the wifi connection. Instead uses 3G for updating...is it happening only in my mobile?
And I guess nodata might just work...lemme chk that out ....Thanks a ton
Mine too used to use what it wanted, hspda as first choice. So i deleted the 3g configuration. From what i have read, it is a WM problem: no way to set 3G as secondary choice

start->settings->connections->connections
here you see (don't know how exactely in english, since i have italian)
internet (???)
work
under internet, "modify"
enter there, and delete your 3G account.
Now back in connections, go advanced->select (net???) [the first button over composition rules]
Here select "work" for everything.
Now, without 3G, the phone connects to internet only if you have an active wifi, otherways doesn't connect.
Wouldnt it just be easier to use the HD tweak utility to disable internet access via 3G/GPRS/HSDPA? - just a thought guys, instead of deleting settings which may be required at a later time (i.e. when no WIFI is available)
My weather updates fine via WIFI,
My emails (using a hotmail account) keep trying to update via 3G though - I can't get it to do it via WIFI unless I use Windows Live to login then update emails
Would, but as you see there are problems (and i suspect hd tweak kills also mms's, since excludes all data connections). Instead, deleting the account, is easier. I can always reinstall it with the connection wizard.
try this: disable or delete your gprs connection, enable wifi and try to download weather data. if successful, then re-enable your gprs connection and see if it still prefers to use gprs or wifi at first place.
Use modaco NoData to make sure the 3g connection is never used.
Done
Thanx a ton for ur help...I used Nodata and my work was done...sweet and simple...
Thanx
I have a similar problem, just wanted to open a topic about it
Unfortunate, weather is not updating any more, no Wifi, no 3G.
I do not mind it using 3G, but it's not updatingf, nothing works.
I am not even sure how to delete the default 3g connections.
i will try .. i hope i will not have to hard reset the phone again
Ummm... u bought £500 phone and yet can't afford a 50kb 3G/GPRS bandwidth per month?!
Quite intriguing
@zoomee
To make email use WIFI and 3G as a fallback, in email account settings change connection to "The Internet" (it's probably set to your 3G Access point e.g. "T-mobile internet")
Maybe your settings are wrong. Does QuickGPS work? If it doesn't, then check your settings. With some access points of some operators, you can only browse internet pages but not use other apps requiring internet access.
@sriramkrishnan06: no problem
I am affording a 3g Connection and Bandwidth (if that was pointed at me).
I can not get any more weather data (
I deleted as explained here some of the previous set connections to my 3g provider and also rebuild one, and still nothind
throguth Wifi it seems not to work, but through 3g, not any more
it was working before, i had to hard reset it and now it does not work any more
I think it was pointed to sriramkrishnan06.
Anyway, have you checked whether QuickGPS works or not?
The Quick GPRS works form me, Weather still does not work
I am little upset since i know i am missing something small. I am not THE thech savvy guy, but i know my whay arroud computers, (i am a web developer) still, somehow i am not able to make the damn weather work, even tried one of the "hacks" witht e weather database editoer, to load the default server, it is still not working for me.
If anyone has an idea .. please ..
If Quick GPS works then I have no idea. Are you sure you didn't mess up anything using that tool?
In any case, hard resets almost always work. If you don't want to, you could do a full backup with Resco Backup or similar, hard reset, test the weather, then restore the backup.
Here is what I'm Trying to do:
~Find a Wm6 or Wm6.1 that would allow me to setup and use the phone with out a data connection from A&TT, but would like to only use WIFI to access the Web, email & facebook...etc...etc
~What threads, rom, tricks, cabs or tweaks where used to achieve this... while still being able to use email & the web via WIFI only?
~I've tried several Roms all installed no problem except setting up email accounts and intermittent web access issues when the phone goes into standby.
~I've set up a Window live email account but have very inconsistent connections issues. (Mostly not working)
~Frequent connection errors...
Any suggestion, pointers would be great!
As far as i know the first port of call for wm phones is to try and connect via a data plan, it will only try via wifi if you have it switched on and connected, i havent found a way of getting it to automatically try to connect to wifi. So good luck in finding it , as i have been on here for years and still dont know how to do it.
I know its not exactly useful, but just letting you know, dont think its going to be easy
You can use NoData to prevent it from trying to use a data plan (2G, 3G, etc).
I don't have a data plan at all; this is what I do to force it to use only activesync passthrough or wifi:
http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/
The No-data cab did not help.... Did nor notice any changes... Outlook continues to pop open every few minutes. Not sure what the cause is however the phone works fine when I connect it with WIFI. is there some reg-edit to stop the outlook pop up? Let me give some more info that may help...
Using:
~Window Live Hotmail client with in Pocket Outlook
~Do not have a data plan for the phone (AT&T 8525 Hermes)
~The Only way the phone connects to the web or email is via WIFI
All suggestions welcome....

The nodata cab installs the nodata program - check your programs menu. Run the nodata program and you can toggle off your connections.
I have looked and looked, and cant seem to find a solution that works for me. I am with Telstra in Australia (why do Telstra like to make things so difficult??)
My problem is that my Outlook Email will only sync with exchange via 3G even though there is a working wifi connection availalable. I get heaps of mail so I am rapidly going through nearly 1G of data each month - even though I am on a good package this is not ideal!!
From my understanding of this thread ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611724&highlight=activesync+work+connection I updated the Broadcomm Network Adaptors to Internet (they were Work), and then deleted the proxy settings for the Telstra Internet connection.
BUT still my mail is updating over 3G and not wifi. I can access Internet etc over wifi though.
Interestingly, I can only update Bigpond mail over wifi and not 3G. Thats not a big deal as I get minimal mail to that account and I am happy to check it at home - its the Outlook email thats chewing up heaps of data that I worried about.
I hope that I cant be the only one with this problem so if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it! (I know it will be one check box deep in the phone settings, I just dont know which one it is!)
Thanks
That's how it works. Push (Activesync connection) needs a direct connection between the server and device, so that the server can page the device when it's got something for it. This wouldn't work through wifi, because when you're on wifi you're behind a router, which doesn't allow connections from the outside to reach your device. So Activesync will always want to use the data connection.
One thing you can do is NOT to set activesync to receive new mail when it arrives, but only manually or at time intervals, it might work.
Or, simply set it to download only the first 5kB of each message, which is always enough to see what the mail is about , and you can always click "download whole message" for those you need. If you manage to use 1GB with 5kB messages, you're really spending your life on your email box
Thanks so much.
You would think that if Blackberry and Apple have managed to get their email to push over wifi that MS could get Direct Push to work over wifi too!! I've disabled MS Direct Push and changed Active Sync to check every 5 minutes. So, its not quite the same, but its near enough for me!
Thanks again ... I will stop searching for the solution now (and will reduce the download setting too ...)
Sarah, same exact problem here, it really annoyed me, then only way I could have used wifi to sync my outlook, Gmail, etc(which have the same issue) is to set the phone to Airplane mode and then enable wifi, only then it will sync via wifi.
Thank you Kilrah, that was a very spot on answer - it is very apreciated !
Cheers !
