Ok peeps i downloaded the remotedesktop.cab from one of the threads in the forum. I installed it but i cannot connect to my pc. Here are the fields and what i put in them.
computer - i put my ip address
user name - i put my admin acc name not the pc name. Is that correct?
password - well yeah....
domain - i leave this one empty, cause i don't use one.
Now, when i click connect...the following appears.
connection status ok
Cannot connect. Likely
reasons are:
1. Specified computer name
or ip does not exist.
2. A network error occurred
while establishing the connection.
Does aynone know what the problem might be???
I use win xp pro sp2
I got a router.
In the field i put the ip thats shown when i visit one fo the "what is my ip" sites LOL.
I am making this reply through my remote desktop connection...
Computer IP addr. is the Actual IP address of you Desktop computer...
UserAcctount info: use the Administrator's user name and password
Domain not needed if not on a enterprise network!
Make sure on your Desktop computer under system setting.....
You allow remote connection to the computer.
If you are on your computer when you connect to it with your X1. The screen will "logout the user out" and show it is being remotely access!

If you are accessing through the INTERNET is a bit different!!
The Ip Address Will be the One that is display through Whatismyip!!
But you will also have to make an Entry into the "pinhole" list in your router. This pinhole entry will be pointing to your PC your are trying to access!!
So when you access your INTERNET IP address(router) it will direct this traffic toward your PC!!

I don't have a tab named "remote" when i click on system. I'm using a custom xp pro and the guy who did it apparently deleted all remote functions Is there a download or something to fix that.

Well on the local network side, your ip address should be 192.168.xxx.xxx. So access directly through your wifi network, You will need the Local address of the computer.

Then on the Internet side. the router/gateway acts like a smart traffic cop! It directs the traffic from your PC destine for the Internet. Also it redirect response traffic from the Internet to the specific Computer that has made a request on the Internet!!
But remote access is different. You on your X1 is Initiating contact through the Internet to a computer that is behind the Router/Gateway. So for this traffic to be directed to the right computer, a Pinhole is created. A pinhole is essentially a direct route through the router for the Internet traffic to be directed to the correct PC!!
Well on a custom XP install it is hard to tell if just the services were turned off. Or they were actually removed!! In this case it sound like one of the Remote access service like GoToMyPC would be easier. Unless you want to re-install a FULL version of XP Pro!!
All is not loss yet! Also check on MS knowledge-base support site. do a search for this exact problem. There might be a download for the remote access service!!

I had a JasJar and before it PDA2k and with both I could not mount network shares on my local home network. I write the address in file explorer in the format \\10.0.0.23\share where the share share does not even have a password and is share to everybody and the phone can not recognize the share.
It does see other devices on the local netword for example it can browse the Internet and access my routers web based admin but not the share.
Other computers on my home network can access the share.\
I heard there are programs that help in doing this, but is there no direct or free way to do this?
Try using Resco File Explorer in which you will be able to map shared network folders and then you can access them from File Explorer directly, it even support possword protected shared items.
Im using the standard file explorer, it works fine. I start by typing \\P4 which eventually shows my shares, and then I can navigate as I want.

still can not connect to share
Nasdaq, which version of windows do do you have the share on. Are there any special settings?
It gives me "network path was not found" always then "Network resource can not be found or you do not have the permission to access the network".
The share has no password, on windows it just logs me in without any further input.
I am using the openpath in the file explorer.
May be you need to check once again about IP Addresses and Default Gateway settings, which is not allowing you to connect with your LAN.

This problem is on WindowsXP share not on windows server.
Also the imate can access the Internet and even the administration of the router, so I gues it has full TCP/IP abililty.

I had the same problem accessing network shares on my Universal...
I was also typing IP address in Resco Explorer and it was not working.
But I could make it work using the computer name. I have no idea why it work whil with basic ip address it couldn't, but at least I am able to browse my computer folder and play video files.
So try using "\\computername\share" to see if it's working.

I tried doing that, using the computer name. It takes more time to tell me that it can not access the server.
I think that to resolve the name of the computer it needs a wins server, is that correct?
Could it also be in your network settings if you set your network as internet or connects to work?

Jatt theoretically you should be able to create a network share on any computer on your network and be able to access it on your phone. This is really handy since you would not need to activesync to exchange files.
But note that for JasJar/Exec or any WM5 device you can not sync over the network just share files.

I've got the same problem. I can connect to the internet through my router but for the life of me I can't connect to the shared on my PC (XP SP2). I know it's not a problem with my EXEC because I can connect to my PC at work. I can see my PC in the device list but not connect to it.
The first time I tried to connect using Resco Explorer 05 I managed to ge the screen asking for log-on details, but never got any further as it said my passwork was incorrect. Since then I've never managed to get the log-on screen back only an error say the network resource was unavailable.
I've ran the XP network set-up wizard more times than I can count, changed my PC settings manually but still had no luck. Has no one figured out what we're doing wrong?
I didn't really understand the machine name issue as I don't have any WINS or DNS server at home... But for me it worked...
Anyway you should try to temporarily disable your personnal firewall (On the computer you're trying to access) just to see if it is not blocking network traffic for the windows sharing.
If it is the problem, then you have to configure your firwall to stop blocking this traffic...

All good advice but this may not work if your office PC is behind a firewall / your office network uses Network Address Translation or you need a VPN to access the network. Give it a go and see what happens but if the IP address of your office PC starts 10.0.0 or 192.168 or similar, it is unlikely to work. You will then have to use a remote access service.

Also if your IP's range anywhere within 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255, the you're behind a firewall.

If you're just using 3G/HSDPA you shouldn't have any problems connecting.
If you've got a DSL connection with a dynamic IP address (like mine with Virgin Media) Just register and download the NO-IP software (www.no-ip.com - it's free) then instead of typing in your Ip address on RD you'll put "....no-ip.biz" - or whatever they assign you.
As already stated you HAVE to open up port 3389 on your router and assign it to the relevant pc. This number you will find by entering "ipconfig" in the cmd window. Be aware that if your router gets turned off you could find that the IP address of your computer changes, so you'll have to go back into your router settings and change it to the new ip address for that pc.
I've tested RDP on XP Pro, Media Center 2005 and Vista. I found it to be a little better when the host was a Vista pc - whether this is my imagination or because it is designed with Vista in mind I don't know.

Of course, this only applies if you are not behind a corporate firewall using NAT or other dynamic IP behind the firewall. Also, if it is a corporate network, opening port 3389 may be (a) very difficult to convince your IT dept to do and (b) not very secure!
If one iof the dynamic dns systems works for you, you might try dyndns.org
any detailed how to guide?, i can do it, i'm fairly tech savvy, so i just need to kneed out a few things. maybe if you caould start from the beginning and i can see where i went wrong.
logmein.com works, but i want something more personal, just bewtween the computer and my phone. somerthing that looks good and scales full screen preferably.
please guys?, point me in the right direction.. all the posts just keep saying to search and there's lots of info, but there's no step by step guide.

ok i got it going.
first go to the computer you want to connect to and go to control panel / system
click on remote, enable remote users
go to start menu, run. type cmd
in command write "ipconfig /all"
take note of your ip address
on your phone go to remote desktop,
computer = your ip address
username = (go to startmenu, control panel, user accounts) use one of those names.
password = blank unless you have a password.
domain = i left blank.
connect full color unless it doesnt work for you
if you can connect and you get a password error
type the error you get inot google and you should get a fix as your first link.
try that.

this is the most succinct tutorial on how to do this that I've seen. I'm still having trouble, though. I get the "Cannot connect. Likely reason are: 1 the remote comupter is not set up for this. 2. Reached the maximum number of connections. 3. A network error occurred while connecting."
I have set up the XP PC, & taken down all firewalls. I only have one user account and it has a password. I've even tried using Hamachi with one of their VPN ip addresses (awesome and free for pc2pc). I 've combed trhough my router settings too, and tried to clear everything there, too. I can RD from an XP laptop, so ti seems to be something on the unit, to me. I've also setup file sharing w/ Total Commander (it's served my purposes amply).
I really have googled & googled & googled. If anyone has any idea what is going on, I'd be grateful for some ideas.

A possible solution for those of us on T-Mobile's standard web n walk
Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I thought I'd post my experiences here in case anyone else (like me) searches for a solution to enabling RDP on T-Mobile (UK at least).
I was having the same problem with remote desktop, it saying that the server was not available. I phoned up T-Mobile's helpdesk as recommended here and after getting past first line support (who didn't know what remote desktop was, and tried sending new connection settings to my phone to resolve the issue) I got through to someone who knew what they were talking about. Turns out that I'm on T-Mobile's "basic" or "handset-only" web-n-walk package, and it's not possible to use RDP on this. I assume they block the relevant ports. They told me that I could pay an extra fiver a month to upgrade to a version of web-n-walk which can handle RDP.
Well I told them I would think about it, but instead tried to find a way around it as the one or two times I need to use RDP are certainly not worth a fiver a month. My solution is probably only suitable for the more techy of us, but without much work and with no prior experience I managed to set up a SSH tunnel using FreeSSHd as a server running on my windows server (although a normal windows box should work fine - http://www.freesshd.com/) and zaTunnel as a client on my phone (http://www.zatelnet.com/zatunnel/main.php). Both programs are free.
Basically my phone takes all RDP connections and tunnels them over SSH to my windows server, which then turns them back into RDP connections. T-Mobile have no idea I'm using RDP, and if they block the SSH port in the future I can always change FreeSSHd to run on port 80 (for web). This will also work for other protocols T-Mobile might be blocking (FTP springs to mind).
Just thought I'd post this in case anyone was in my situation of needing RDP on their standard web'n'walk.

Many thanks for the above have been searching everywhere for a fix to this. I am the same as you T Mobile (UK) and can't connect.
Could you give some additional advice as how you got the RDP to work.
For the record I can connect by Wi-Fi and by using a PAYG sim from a different carrier. However, I am on a contract with T Mobile and don't want to carry a different sim just to use the RDP.
I have installed both apps. I can make a connection from zaTunnel on Port SSH:24 to the freeSSHD server (SSH - listening on port 24). Other than adding a User and changing the default port to 24 there are no other changes I have made in freeSSHD.
Under the connections tab in zaTunnel I have left Network: Automatic with the other settings relevant to make a connection.
Under the ports tab of zaTunnel I have
LP> 3389,
IP/URL . IP of the desktop I want to connect to of 192.168.1.10
>RP 3389
When I the start the Remote Desktop app under my Windows Mobile 6.1 it indicates connecting the fails as before.
Also forgot to mention freeSSHD is running on the desktop I want to connect to.

When you run Remote Desktop under Windows Mobile, make sure you connect to "localhost" NOT to the IP of the desktop you want to connect to.
Your other settings seem correct to me.
To attempt to explain a little, basically what happens is as follows. For simplicity's sake I will have three machines, your phone, your SSH server and your RDP server (although the latter two can be the same).
On your phone:
1) Remote Desktop connects to localhost on port 3389.
2) zaTunnel is listening on localhost on port 3389. It echos all commands sent to this port out on port 22 over your cellular connection to your SSH server, also providing details of your RDP server and port.
On your SSH server:
3) FreeSSHd receives the commands sent over port 22 and is told by zaTunnel to convert them to commands sent to your RDP server using port 3389.
On your RDP server:
4) Remote Desktop receives a normal RDP request over the normal port from your SSH server.
5) Responses are sent to your SSH server.
On your SSH server:
6) FreeSSHd receives the RDP responses, and sends them back to your phone over port 22.
On your phone:
7) zaTunnel converts the commands sent over port 22 back into RDP commands sent over port 3389.
8) Remote desktop receives a response from zaTunnel and thinks it's connected directly to an RDP server on localhost. In actuality it's connected to your RDP server using an SSH tunnel provided by zaTunnel and FreeSSHd.
Hope this makes sense, I'm not very good at explaining this!
Ah found another problem. The IP of your desktop you say is 192.168.1.10 - this is a local IP address so will only work on your local network.
Go to a website like http://whatismyipaddress.com/ from the machine you run SSHd on to find out what your current "external" IP address is. Bear in mind that most home broadband connections have a "dynamic" address which is allocated to you and might change from time to time - you can always use something like http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/ to set yourself up with a static hostname, and run a program on your machine which updates your hostname with the correct IP address every time it changes. Some routers have this functionality built in.

Between posting and reading your reply I had worked out the RDP app needs the localhost or the IP 127.0.0.1.
I had come back here to post, so others would know in future.
Your other point you raised about the desktop IP. I have used this only in the ports tab on zaTunnel. The connection tab has a proper mydomainname.com address. (Provides email and a webmail interface).
Anyway, can connect now and thank you again in solving this for me. (If your in Leeds I will buy you a beer).
Ah yeah the 192.* address would work on the ports tab, fair enough. Might be worth pointing out if others read this that this is only the case if the machine you're trying to RDP to is on the same local network (or the same machine) as the machine you have FreeSSHd running on.
But good to hear you got it working Now hopefully T-Mobile won't cotton-on and decide to block port 22 too...
I have been searching for clarity thru islands of info in the forums as well as the net. Any help directing me would be sweet. I am trying to use my T-Mobile Wing HTC WM6 to control a computer on my home network. I have somewhat knowledge of having the server and client. Have read and installed programs. I want to be at McDonalds *or any wifi spot and log in to home computer. When I have a VNC server running it says the network ip address of 192.168.1.101 but I assume thats because its thru my network. I have went to what is my ip address.com and tried that with the port the server allows in the vnc viewer and had no luck. I think I might be too newb for such an advanced concept. I am somewhat computer savvy to alot of technical terms. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. I use messengers if faster communication is necessary. Thanks in advance to any help or thoughts.

a few thoughts,
1. what version of windows are you running. (e.g Xp Home or vista )
as Vista home basic and premium will not accept a remote desktop connection without a 3rd party hack to make it work only business and ultimate support remote desktop
If on XP home be sure to set allowing of remote desktop sessions to be allowed under the system properties area.
2. do you have a password setup on the user account that you log into windows on if no remote desktop will not allow access.
3. when browsing from a 3rd party network ( e.g mcdonalds or over GPRS/HSDPA ) you browse to your external ip not the dark ip of 192.168.1.x i use dyndns.org so i can just browse to the dynamic domain ip which is my external ip of my home pc
4. since you mentioned a dark ip i can only also assume your using a router at home. this means you either use such as LogmeIn/Hamachi and browse to the home pc's Hamachi IP ( e.g 5.5.100.50 ) or you will have to set a port forward in your router to forward any requests from port 3389 to the local IP of the home pc, ( e.g 192.168.1.100 )
I use static ip's in my router at home to ensire that the port forward will always goto my home pc's internal ip address. My particular router from netgear allows to have the ip of a specific machine be assigned the same ip internally based on it's ethernet adapter MAC address. making no changes required on the pc itself other them standard DHCP.

1. I am using Windows XP Home. I have allowed Remote Access under the tab Systems Tab.
2. I only have a pw on the prog VNC server on the pc but no passwords for windows *should I? :| ... Then I try VNC Viewer the the Pocket PC *T-mobile Wing.
3. I am reading up on the dyndns.org site. I assume I need the free dns service for those with dynamic IP addresses. *i hope I have that.
4. I have Linksys Bef11s4... I believe I can set static ip's though its tricky for me. I am going to try for the pc I want to connect to. This networking stuff gets a little bit blurry for me. I understand that static means non-changing, therefore the pc to connect to in network will have same ip on restarts and things. I am familiar with the port forwarding options *do i need tcp and udp checked?... again any thoughts definately appreciated...
lastly, Do you have any particular progs you recommend for me to do this concept? I have a few installed, but not sure i need all.. I have pocketputty on pda and wm6 rdc... plus vncvier. On the PC i have VNC CLient and VNC Server *believe I only need server. Thank you for your time Cyberjak

have the logme in installed on main and when i use pda it doesnt work...i installed cab and log in fine but when i go to remote the pc it takes my access code and then pops up with error message for menuPDA.html... i cleared history and cookies and tried to make sense of the forums... I am using the T-mobile Wing with WM6.... wierd... willing to try the other way if needed... i guess i could also try loggin thru a pc not home to the remote pc... i believe i saying this remote term correctly but i believe u understand. I've used Logmein on my MDA Pro, Ameo and now on my Vario 3.
You should first try to remote your PC while your sitting next to it. That way you can see any firewall pop ups that may be blocking you.
I have been trying when i am right next to it... I am using my WM6 to connect wi-fi to the internet thru my network.... the pc i wanna control is on my network...
It doesn't matter what network the PDA and PC are on. Logmein uses an internet connection.
yeah, tried a bunch of things to get logmein to work, and it always comes to the page of "403 Forbidden (0x5) menuPDA.html System error: Access is denied. (5)"
checked their forrums too...

Gooer Remote Desktop Service
I am using Gooer Remote Desktop Service(http://www.gooer.com) and it let me access my home PC using laptop or mobile phone.

I did exactly everything in this guide and even set a corresponding exception in the Windows firewall (also tried with Windows firewall off) - but the mobile remote desktop program always tells me there was an internal error... But what the heck could that be?
Dont bother the remote dt program is ****e, im currently using vnc which is a bit better, but rather lacking also.
Is it me or did that video not mention setting up your windows machine to allow connections.
Make sure remote desktop is enabled on your PC and make sure it is allowing connections from computers running any version of Remote desktop(2nd option) third option works between windows 7 machines but wouldn't allow my phone to connect.
Your error sounds like it is being caused by something on the phone end though so i dont know if that will help.
Those with remote desktop working can you get it to go landscape? Mine works fine except i can't get landscape mode. Also anyone know of a app that can send wake up requests to a machine? I have this on my laptop so i can wake my pc over the internet and then log in. Anything similar out there for win mobile?
allowing a connection through windows firewall alone is not helping, if you have other system securtiy programs that also has a firewall. or maybe your router has a firewall too. you should try and forward the right port (3389) in the software of your router.
I opened port 3389 on the router, I activated the correct remote desktop option on the PC (Vista), the IP is right (wrong IP adress throws a different error, so the program gets that far)...
I guess you have Windows 7 Home version
Have you tried using 16 bit high colour option? Mine said it couldn't connect when i turned it down to 256 colours.

OK on my windows7 x64 ive turned on remote desktop and set it to allow connections (2nd option) and i still cant connect, what do i type in user/pass on the hd2

-tryed both color modes on hd2
does it have to be over wifi or can it be over 3g?
Your user name and password for windows.
You MUST have a password set up on your windows account to be able to use remote desktop. If you don't have a password set up remote desktop and other network related access will not work. I.e using the phone to access shared windows folders.

ok ive added a password to my pc but still wont work, i think i tmay be something todo with this steps

my router is a THOMSON TG585v7 and to log into it i need to type http://192.168.1.254 so i did and the only thing like port forwarding i can find is the Toolbox\Game & Application Sharing menu and in their i can type the ports but cant type the local IP address as their no where to add it, ive added a pic that might help you help me
If you are accessing the machine via your wifi(i.e your own network) you should be able to do it without any port forwarding.
So punch in your machines local IP and your username and password. That should work(make sure it is using your WiFi and not still connecting via 3G). If you wanted to be able to do it via 3G/wifi(external network) then you will need to get port forwarding working.
Edit: Port forwarding guide for you. I think this is roughly the same version of router you have just different branding.

so in the last part of the setup i need to manually define it as the local ip, still not working if that's what i should do
The last step is applying the forwarding to your PC. So you should be able to pick your PCs name in the drop down box.
Have you tried just doing it over your local wireless network(forget about port forwarding for a minute.) Enter the local IP(could also just try entering the name of the PC though im not sure if that works) of your PC as the computer then your user name and password.
