Help needed with touch screen - Shift General

HI
I have a htc shift and the touch screen doesn't work in snap vue and in vista....i tried reinstalling the drivers in vista and no succes..i tried to hard reset snap vue still no succes..i tried anything that i can imagine... the shif is new and the touch screen worked for 5 minutes and after that it stoped..the guys from htc in dubai said that if i leave my htc there it will be ready in 1 month beacouse they don't know what the problem is...and i took it home to see if i figure out a solution..any sugestions??pls help

Maybe the cable connecting the display part to the main part is slightly misplaced.
This connector is aprox. under the keys T, Y, U, try pressing those keys and around them with the Shift turned off.
If that doesn't work, you can try removing the keyboard pushing it from the battery compartment with a straightened paper clip, and reseating the connector yourself.
Good luck.

Touch screen stopped working

Hi...
I read through the posts, noticing others were having similar issues, without anyone giving a clue of what is going on...
All of a sudden, this morning (while a colleague of mine tried the device) the touch screen stopped working. I couldn't do anyhting involving the touch screen...
I reset (soft) it, which didn't resolve the issue, and did a full hard reset, which got me the 'tap the screen to start configuring windows now' but didn't allow me to do anything else...
I cleaned, using a small soft piece of paper, the space between the screen and its cover.
Is there any way to check what is wrong? Any thing to try, to do, ... to see if the touchscreen can be brought to life again?
How can I open the device easily, to check if the connecting cables are still in place, and what cable should I look for?
Thanks for the help...
Dying to get Linux on this one :d:d
Found it, issue resolved!
Got a torx T6 screwdriver, removed the bottom lid. Removed the tape covering the lcd and touchscreen cable/plugs. I popped the connectors out, and put them back in firmly, and reset the bottom lid, screws, battery, battery cover and started up the machine, and the touchscreen was working again!
Thanks anyway...

Touchscreen doesn't work when slider open

hi,
since yesterday, my niki doesn´t response to touchscreen tapping if the slider is opened. i hear a very quiet metallic clicking sound if i open it up... if i try tapping the touchscreen before this little click appears, the touch works... but with slider open completely, it doesn´t. i guess this is hardware specific. i´ve tried a hardreset now, but still doesnt work any advice?
EDIT: i didnt flash any other radio...
EDIT2: sometimes it does work.
Sounds like a ribbon cable has come loose to the touch screen - send it back if it is under warranty, if not, Mike Channon has collected links to the service manuals somewhere on here which should show you how to correctly take it apart, fix it and put it back together again
Cheers,
Smiffy
I had the same problem. In my device it was: cable that goes to touch screen contacted metal on back panel.
I've solve it by finding manual to take my niki apart (http://www.pdacenter.ru/razborka/razbor_htc_touch_dual/ - but it is in russian). I've done everything till 6 point. Then I put my v-card between this cable and metal. Now it's ok
I've got extra service on mine.
6 euro's a month.
handed in the phone today (same issue), and got given an new one! ;D

You ROCK! I had this exact same problem happen on my NIKI100 after I put Tom's Niki Project ROM on & immediately blamed it but after flashin back to stock the problem still occured & I was really bummin! I found this thread, tore my NIKI apart to step 6 as you described & I could see the spots on the metal of the inside back of the back cover where the cable was rubbing along with the protective plastic worn off on the cable a little bit so I suspect it was touching the metal & shorting out causing the problem (heck I'm surprised it didn't do some real damage!) so I cut about a 1" length of electrical tape & taped it to the area of the metal that it was rubbing on (I didn't see any legit reason for anything to make contact to that area for a ground so I figured it was OK. I started at the edge & ended just before the gaps where you would be able to see the tape from the other side in the battery cavity) and VOILA! it fixed it! To me it looks like a nasty design flaw on HTC's part but not expecting a recall any time soon. I suspect this fix will out last the phone & hopefully this thread will help others. I am 1/2 tempted to tear apart my NEON to see if the same design exists or if they put a piece of tape in that area.

Hm, same problem here. Thought first that it was an error of the ROM that I used..
Btw: isolated every contat that I could find (nearly ) but no result -> still my touchscreen doesn't work when my slide is open..
EDIT: has anyone PHOTO'S of their disassembly and isolation work? I the problem is different on my device 'cuz the cable hasn't worn off...
Ok,
Now I took my device apart to the last piece, took the display cable apart, taped it in completely and my touchscreen WORKS once again :-D.
Woot! Thumbs up for XDA-developers!
EDIT: Now my touchscreen doesn't work when slide's closed... Any suggestion?

ive brought my dual to a vodafone shop and they have fixed my dual. Replaced a part and software update, got windows 6.1 now, legal and my screen is working like a champ!
I have had the same problem with my touch screen except mine stopped working completely, it didn't matter if it was slide out or not. I could get the phone replaced on warranty though.
Just posting so people know this isn't just isolated case.
mine slowly stopped working.. im gonna disassemble later and try this. im glad im not alone
edit: worked a treat. some insulation tape on the metal shielding worked great.
That did't work for me! Can it be something else or is it the flex cable for shure? I'm considering buying a new flex cable on ebay! Will that fix the problem with touchscreen dos'nt work when slide is open?
theres a 99% chance that its the flex cable.. did you check it for any damage? mine had tiny tiny little dots with wire exposed. barely noticable but it was enough. try taping the cable. i dont know. if not, i'd get a new cable for sure.
It's worth a try. I've just bought a new cable. Hopefully it will make my
Dual working again. Now I just have to wait a week for it.
The cable arrived today and my dual now works perfect. Now the question is which phone i'll use, my dual or my new Diamond.. =)
hey, where did you get yours from? and how much did it cost?
i have seen ebay, but they are over 30$US including shipping.

HELP! T-Mobile MDA screen going loco

Hi, peeps. Would like to ask for your assistance in troubleshooting my old T-Mobile MDA - the one that is also the Xda mini S.
The unit in question is 2nd hand although it was still in good shape when I got it. Used it for over a year already and has seen much use. Once, the insides got wet and I had to dry it out but it was okay after that. Although the keyboard wasn't showing any backlight until I figured out that a blowdryer would help remedy that situation (after careful dismantling).
Recently, the screen when you slide open the keyboard either comes up blank (whole screen is just white) or is discolored and a bit disaligned (the top part is either missing or is at the bottom of the screen). It happens too on the normal layout at times.
I upgraded the firmware with the most recent one I downloaded here last year. No problems experienced though with regards to the OS and not sure if the recent problem can be attributed to it.
Any ideas and suggestions?
I got the same problem on with the screen my Cingular 8125. When I slide the keyboard open, the exact same thing happens to my screen. Sometimes It only used to happen maybe once every 10th time, but as of last, it is happening all the time.
I spoke to someone at a repair store in Toronto and the guys said it will cost close to $100 to replace some wiring in the back. It didn't seem worth it for me so I got another phone instead, but I would love to keep using this phone if this could be replaced.
Hey guys. If you are comfortable, I would suggest dismantling the phone and taking a look at the ribbon connector between the board and the screen. My guess is that it is loose, or damaged. Reseat the ribbon and try again. Otherwise I would see if replacing the screen helped. Certainly much cheaper than a new phone...
Reseating
first of all check out the socket (on board) where the screen coaxial cord is plugged in , r all the connector pins alligned or are any bent / pulled back ?
in that case reset pins location using a tiny neidle or pin, also use a double faced adheisive tape on the back of the screen connector to rest it tight to keyboard (original setup only they use glue).
second check out if the screen does that if was flipped using software , if it was a hardware case and upper solution wouldnt help then check to see if the sliding mechanism (two plastic identical bars screwed by two screws each to the top and the buttom of the screen) are aligned and screwed tigh to the screen.
now the wizard hardware is a survivor but any tampering with it require tight reseating , screwing and later reflashing (even if the software showed unaffected).

Battery won't charge, power button broken, me going crazy

Ok, im going to start not from the beginning beginning, but from where problems started.
Friday night, went out, I was writing an sms when somebody pushed me and i dropped my wiz, i picked it up, to find that the battery was gone, nowhere to be found, i did find the cover tho. i tried to look for the batt, but i was in the middle of the club so it wasn't that easy.. I knew that a friend of mine had a spare one so i didn't worry that much.
Sunday I got the replacement, tried it, no luck, it ran out i thought, but when i tried to charge it, nothing happened. Buying a new one is not that easy when you are in Argentina, and they are expensive, so i decided to jump sart it. good news: it worked, i could turn on the phone, so the battery is fine. bad news: it still doesn't want to charge!
I previously had problems with the usb, and i had to have it soldered again, pretty strong, but I thought that might be the problem again, so i disassembled my wiz. new problem: the power button broke, the tiny, tiny black piece fell off, AND I LOST IT! DOH!
Anyways, the usb is still soldered pretty strong, i don't think its gonna go loose again, so thats not the freaking problem!
So now, instead of the initial no-charge problem, i have a disassembled wizard, that won't charge the goddamn battery, AND a broken power button (tried to glue it, but fell off again and thats when i lost the piece).
Regarding the button, i've studied my options, what would you recommend and how would you do it?
option 1: turn on the phone with the soft reset hole, and remap the screen on/off function to another button.
option 2: replace the power button internal piece with the one from the voice command button (i never use it). i've taken a look and they seem to be the same, but i don't know if taking it off and soldering it back would work..
anyways, that leaves me again with my initial problem, and i do have an hypothesis. I THINK (because I THINK i remember this happening to me before), that the battery won't start charging until windows has started, and the jump star power the battery has is not enough to get it started (tried to tape it and leave it for a while to see if it charged a bit more, but didn't work, the phone turns on but goes out when loading, and since i've my wiz pretty loaded it takes its time to load).
So to try this out i would need a way to charge the battery manually, and i don't have access to another wiz to have it charged (my friend had a spare batt because his wiz is broken).
So, if you have a solution to this, ANY different solution, or even an IDEA, please give me a hint!
For what i've read, this are common problems, so there must be something out there.
Man, that's a bad thing
I'll try to help you as much as I can.
You are right about Wiz only start charging when it's on. After my N78 was stolen and I went back to the Wizard, the battery was without any charge for months... I plugged it and no red LED... Turned it on and, bingo, red LED and charging!
The voice command and the on/off buttons are the same, so (in theory) it would work 100% IF you were able to change their places (at least for me, it is impossible to do manually, never found any good equip here =\ )
With a lot of patience (and a small soldering iron) I would try to take the voice comm button off and place it where the on/off was.
For the battery, maybe someone here can point if there is a "battery charger" standalone device, or such a thing...
Good luck man
hey thanks for the quick reply!
i'm not thinking of doing it myself, i'm not not that precise nor is my solder, but i know a guy, same dude that fixed my usb. I like that idea more than the other, but i guess that remapping the screen on/off and using the soft reset button would be much safer.. i haven't made up my mind about that yet.
Weir thing about MY wiz, at least thats what i think happened to me last time my battery was completely discharged, is that not only the device must be ON for it to charge, but it needs to have WINDOWS already loaded, i know for most devices it's not like that, but i think thats how mine works, or at least thats the only explanation i could find!
btw, i love your case modding concept, and since i might have my wiz sitting for a while, i might go ahead and try something too! nothing as extreme as yours of course.. i'd love to see more updates on your project along with some guide to see what ideas i can take
slight detail while thinking my options.. if i was to remap the screen on/off function to another button, would i need to have the device in sync? or connected via cable? because when i had the usb soldered, don't know how nor why (all the pins seem to be ok) but the device won't be recognized by any computer, usb only works for charging (or used to work, at least, still haven't figured why it won't charge now).
If its only an app that i can load to the phone, once i have it working (that if i ever will), i can load the app thru minisd, BT or IrDa so that would't be a problem.. i haven's investigated that issue yet.
Hey jinxie, how's your Wizard?
If you're still stuck with the battery (I hope not), check this out...
I think this will solve your battery problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4963547&postcount=5
That's probably to work, just be carefull with the battery's temperature. If it starts to heat, stop the process and wait it to get normal, then start again.
Good luck!
i tried keeping the wires attached to the contacts for a while, didn't think it'd work better doing it just for a little and then repeating the process, i'll try that!
yeap, i'm still stuck and i think i will be for a while, i have to solve the battery issue first (would be useless to do anything else if i'm not certain i will get it to work), then i have to decide what i am going to do with the power button, and then i might paint it, i'm thinking matte black, or maybe take some ideas from your project if you have made any progress at the time!
thanks for the tip, i'll try it today and i let you know how it went
development: phone DOES NOT turn on with the soft reset button as i thought, i was sure it did, but after jumping the bat once again, tried the wiring method (not repeating the jump start but wiring it directly to de device pins), and tried to turn it on with soft reset and dind't work, while it does turn on with the power button, wich is broken, so in order to turn it on i cannot have the phone assambled, wich means that in order to try to make it work, i will need to hold the battery attached with my hands, and it is a pain in the.. you know where.
update: i wired the charger i was using to jump start the battery to the pins in the wizard, then held the battery in place with my hand, with a small screwdriver i pushed the broken power button. wizard turned on, IT FINALLY LOADED WINDOWS, but don't rush, i then (with my MOUTH) connected the USB wall charger to the port in the phone, and removed the wiring, i was expecting the goddamn light to turn on and the screen to tell me that my phone was finally charging. I WAS WRONG. then i had to let go because my hand was killing me and it went off
and the damn thing refuses to charge! what could it be????????
2nd update: I AM MACGYVER !
i figured the wiring had given the bat enough power to load windows on its own, so tried once more holding everything together with my hand but without wiring the pins this time, and at last the amber light turned on!!! im so proud of myself lol
SO NOW: device works ok, charges ok, battery has enaugh power to load windows, WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT THE BROKEN POWER BUTTON? i know you can't remap the power function since its hardware, but the screen on/off function might be remapped. soft reset button DOES not turn on the phone, is there any other way of turning it on? or my only option is to take off the voice command button and soldering it where the power button should be?
well, found the little button part that was missing, glued it (yes, GLUED it), and it kinda worked, i had painted the casing already, so i assembled everything back again. i used a folded piece of paper to hold the button still so it won't fall again and i think it was too big cause now its kind of hard to press but i can live with that, what i cannot live with is NO SIGNAL.. i mean, CMON!! are you kiddin me? now that the button works, battery works, phone assembled, and now this?? when i dissassembled the phone i forgot to take out the sim card, so the metal parts that hold it opened a bit, but i pressed them back, the sim in no way loose, so i guess i might have screwed the attenna :S
i've just checked, i can see the sim contacts so... [CENSORED] !!!
also now the screen looks weird.. like if it had less colours, like when you format your pc and haven's installed the graphic drivers yet, 3d effects look funny..
Hey man, have you painted ALL the Wizard parts, on both sides?
'Cause there is one that has a piece of copper board inside. It makes contact with the antenna. Without that contact, you'll never have signal
The piece I'm talking about is the one that has the camera protection, saying "1.3 MP camera". Look at its back and see if there's no paint on a green and golden plate. Remove the paint if it got there (the golden part is the important one, since it makes contact with the antenna).
Good luck man!
hahah lol, no of course i didn't paint both sides! but anyways im gonna take it apart again, clean it, and try again..
done. it had some paintng yes, but they were very tiny spray drops, so i don't think that is, anyway i cleaned it. On the other hand, i found that the antenna is loose on the left side :S what can i do about it?

[Q] Replaced battery - now touch screen doesn't work right

No amount of recalibration would correct my bad battery so I replaced the battery in my Nexus 10 (running lollypop). It was a complete pain to get the thing apart but it wasn't all that complex. I wanted to test it with the back off but the new battery was dead and I figured, “what could I possibly have done wrong anyhow” so I put it all together and charged it. I found out what I could do wrong. Now that I have it back together and fully charged the touch screen doesn't respond hardly at all. Everything else seems fine. I can boot to Android, boot to recovery etc... Like I mentioned above, taking it apart is a PITA and I'd like to only do it one more time and forever be done. I am guessing one of the 3 ribbon cables over the battery is for the touch screen. I'd like to only fiddle with the right cable only. Does anyone know which one specifically affects the screen?
Jerryp7
Did you find out what the problem was with you tablet. I have the same problem. I'm sure its the ribbon cables but I don't see anything out the ordinary. Thanks.
John R.
I had to open it back up (which is what I wanted to avoid because it was such a birch). Everything looked OK but I unplugged and replugged everything and it's been fine ever since. It had to have been one of the ribbon cables.
Replaced battery - now touch screen doesn't work right

Thanks for the quick reply. I reopened the table and found the locking bar on one of the ribbon cables is broken. Any idea if they can be replaced?
Thanks again.
Regards,
John R.
Success!
Jerryp7
The clamp for the ribbon cable wasn't broken! The movable part had become detached. After many tries I figured how it went back together. I then found that it helps to hold the cable into the connector as you close the clamp.
Murphy's law rules again.
John R.
Glad you solved it. My only suggestion was to form a little plastic hold-down and super glue. If you ever had to do it again you could snip it off.
Jerry
The new battery still didn't correct the problem with the battery quitting at about 25% left. Do you know if there is any else I should try. I was in contact with Google before I replaced the battery and followed several procedures they suggested. Needless to say none of them worked. When I try to wipe the system cache partition I never get the screen that allows me to select the Recover mode. I get a screen with an arrow on the left that says "Start" and a droid in the center with the words "Downloading" under it. I let that run for over an hour but it didn't appear to do anything. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate them. Thanks.
John R.
Not sure. I'm not having any problems. Have you tried recalibrating the battery? I did that before replacing it which naturally didn't help a bad battery. Is you device rooted? I think it has to be to recalibrate. I use skipsoft unified android toolkit and have been for years. Last thing I did was upgraded to the OTA Build LMY49G which breaks root but the toolkit rooted it even thought Mark doesn't have the factory build availiable yet.
My connector broke when I was changing the battery. Anyone know how to fix it? There was little silver pins that came out. Thanks for help in advance.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
For what it's worth... I had this same problem and was able to fix it fairly easily (if you don't count the PITA of opening the case again). The three cables have to be connected perfectly, which is why they are taped down. The one on the far right (if the device is oriented so the edge with the controls is on top) connects the LCD (it's labeled as such). I have lighted magnifying goggles that I use for many things. I carefully removed the tape (again), opened the locks (again), pulled out the cables, then pushed them gently back in, making sure they were in as far as they could go, all the way across (the goggles make all this very easy to see), and then closed the locks. I did this with all three ribbon cables. I then examined the tape for lint, cleaned off any dirt with 99% isopropyl alcohol and no-lint chamois swabs (just dab it lightly - don't remove all the glue), then pressed the tape down very firmly. When I closed the case again, all was well.
Opening the case isn't nearly as easy as those YouTube videos makes it look. But I'm so glad I did this. It's great to have a working battery again.

I have the same problem, replaced the battery tried 2 different recalibrate apps, tried factory reset, cleared cache and battery shuts down at 20% with no warning.
It's the first cable if you have the camera facing upwards. There is the 2 cables that are together, it's the first of those cables that controls touch on the screen. Just make sure it's seated correctly, press down on it some and close the tab and tape it back in place. I know this because I ended up having to take the back off again while the tablet was powered on after I replaced my battery because the screen wasnt working. I checked each cable and that first one was the one that controlled touch. My Nex10 is working as smoothly as it did when I first got it.
