Please share your experience about using the Storage

I use the Storage to store some DLLs to save space. It works, not for all programs though.
Have tried installing programs to storage before (Journal Bar and Avantgo) but system seemed to be unstable afterwards.
Wonder if anyone has any good experience of storing and running other programs from Storage.
Also, has anyone tried installing the cab files from extended rom to Storage??? Is that possible at all???

Yes, you can use Storage to store your cab files for the EXTROM.
BTW, program cab files for Storage and EXTROM are those that don't upgrade frequently otherwise you'll have to hard reset frequently too

Using Storage or Storage Cards should be avoided for anything on the today screen or anything which is bound to a hardware button. This is because the SD drivers take a little time to initialise when the device powers up and can result in files not being found - which can lead to small or big problems, depending on the nature of the 'missing' file.
This is why Pocket Plus cannot be installed in Storage any more and why Pocket Informant recommends installation into main memory. This is documented both by Spb Software House and WebIS.
I was beta testing SpbWeather and had some of the skins installed to Storage - whenever I used those skins, the plug-in was icon-less on power up, but main memory skins were fine.

As mentioned above, be careful selecting where to install Today Screen plug-ins.
As of the Storage, well I am not sure but I recommed you put in SMALL items in there since the storage becomes unstable at times because to OS may use a little of the Storage space to accomodate memory intensive applications like Adobe Acrobat. Correct me if I am wrong but this is what I understand about it.

Ther is so little storage there, why not just ignore it and use SD memory, or main memory where required?

I use storage to store my wma ringtones... haven't have the guts to move the DLLs yet. with regards to this... if i create a folder named Windows in Storage and move all my DLLs there would I need to hack into the apps individually ang make them look at this folder... or will the OS automatically look at both folders? Some people say to use systempath to do this.

As I know U have to hack the registry files of single appz to point in to storage folder instead in the main memory... :roll:

It's 10% of the device's memory, that's not insignificant and certainly not worth wasting. I store 13.2Mb of utilities and etc. in Storage so that it frees up the same amount of Main Memory but permits me to use them when swapping cards. I think it's a waste not to use it.

Laplink controller
Handymenu
Hottbutton plus
Phone today
Today phone pro
VIto voice dialer
Used space for all this 3.21 mb
Free space 4.31 mb
I Don't have any problem at all, my JAM works smoothly & stable plus the today plugins run faster than ever...

Hi to all, I just bought my US T-Mobile Mda Vario.
So I have a few questions, please if someone more experianced than me can help me, most welcomed.
sorry if I ask for something that it is already in the forum, please be patient and if you can answer with the link were the comment is, well then great.
1- updating my wizard.
actually I have:
ROM - 1.8.10.2 WWE
ROM date - 12/10/05
Radio Version - 01.09.10
Protocol Version - 4.0.13.20
ExtRom Version - 1.8.10.104
CPU - OMAP850
Speed 195MHz
a) what steps do I have to follow in order to update my device?
b) I bought it used so I unlocked it using Lokiwiz. If I update the device, is the same as a Hard Reset? I am wondering if after this I will have to Unlock the Wizard again or not.
c) how sure is the updatting?
d) What about overclocking? is this sure? does it really makes any difference?
2- By default I have the Windows Media Player. Does it has an equalizer? Is out there any freeware program with "equalizer".
3- Is possible to watch the great cnettv.com in my device? How? (I have gprs and wifi internet conections).
4- Which StorageCard software is recomendable? I need one to fix eventual problems or one that can format my storage card.
5- only with the use of a software, the device is capable of GPS? or do I need an external receiver?
6- Can I sync through wi-fi or blutooth?
7- In Window 2003 SE , in the memory you could move the bar when you needed more storage or programs memory, why can´t this be done in windows 2005? or I am missing something?

here are some answers :
1.u cannot move the bar like u were able to in wm2003 as wm5 has a different memory arcitecture the storage memory is no longer volatile...in simple words u have to stickto the avalaible memory but the advantage is wont lose data even if the battery runs out.
2.yes u can sync thru blue tooth not sure abt wifi.
3. u cannot simply use gps with a software (as far as i know)
4.get tcpmp for musiq its free and has an equalizer+tons of other options.

You'll need a GPS receiver to be able to use GPS software with the phone. Overclocking can make a big difference to some software but is barely noticable with others.

DEFINITELY update your ROM. Use T-Mobile's instructions and files. You won't lose your unlocked status. You will notice nothing but improvements in the system. It takes all of ten minutes.

I would install smartskey (but some have had problems, search) it gives you more one handed operation, plus you can overclock with it. If not smartskey search for omapclockplus. Also there is a battery meter that does overclocking, maybe someone can chime in with a name so you can search for it. I'ms table with 240 mHz, other have gone up to 264 I think. Worst that happens is it freezes or soft resets.
You need a GPS reciever to use GPS software, but www.map4pda.com has some decent free software that will gove you access to google maps and MS maps.
You can sync through BT. Ihave had mixed results getting it set up. It will be cake one time...then after I format for some reason, its tough, then easy. But when set up its really nice. No syncing through wifi though (at least with active sync. I'm not sure if tere are any 3rd party progs that let you)
Also I think pocket mechanic can format cards, but I havent used it in a long time.

For overclocking, search the forums for omapclock and smartskey. Put them in the same folder, and change smartskey.ini to enable overclocking. I keep mine at 240MHz with no problems since day one - and I've changed ROMs about a dozen times now.

And yes, you CAN NOT sync over Wifi with the current active sync. IT's complained to security issue.

Not sure what you mean by that. I would recommend to format your card with computer. You can use Antontomov Pocket Mechanic Profesional to look over your card.

I use Conduits Pocket Player.
And use search, very helpful and quicker than waiting for answers

Because WM5 only uses dynamic RAM (SDRAM) for program execution, not storage. Now, storage ONLY uses flash ROM. This is why you don't have a slider any more.
(BTW, I recommend following my blog / my articles in general. I've explained a LOT of questions like this in there.)

NEVER use any Pocket PC-based tool to fix your cards, ONLY chkdsk (and format) on the desktop. Please read http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=39583 for more info on this q.

New reg-hack: MemHack. Pre-Alpha.

I fiddled around with my wm6'd hx4700 (thanks kuzuhara!) and a registry editor and found a way to make it regard SD as ram and xip from it.
This renders my device to achieve usage smooth enough i allow myself to reffer to the device as a mini-umpc^_^
For SD only atm, miniSD may or may not work depending on your devices driver. No MMC for the time being.
I sooooo hope this isn't old news
Here's to me not ****ing any of your devices up, it worked wonders for me.

IMPORTANT!
Delete the Program Files folder and reset again once you see the SD's been renamed to Program Files2.
On the next boot it'll mount as Program Files and everything will load from it.

It seems i was rather in the wrong and am taking a whole new direction.
One which involves reading more carefully before i charge head into the guts of windows embedded.
Will take me a while until next post, and it might become hx4700 exclusive, but i promise you some cool stuff to come yet.
Anybody wanting to make their SD into Program Files to save space,
just start resco reg editor and change hklm\System\StorageManager\Profiles\SDMemory\Folder: Program Files.
(Originally is SD Card).
You can also try messing with it, making it into diffenent sys folders, just be careful
Mine is currently application cache (Volatile) and [email protected] Files.
(Running sweet with what i got to with the enablement of complete graphics accelaration, except for a minor hang up when returning from sleep).

Want to know what it does to the SD card and device as the readme does say to move the devices contents of its program files folder to the sd card?????

Lol... it's my first post, sorry..
All it does is make the device call the card drive "Program Files" and set a swap file that's used as most device memory (don't worry, it's faster than most none-nand flash). i had to leave a small buffer in device memory though.
The memory file is unallocated, so just don't forget to leave 528MB free at all times.

It is and will be updated with periodic updates should they come.

I've been using it for 72 hours now.
It takes the odd reset to free up memory, but nothing worst than what we had before.

well if all thing got wrong.. anyway to revert it back?.. well ofcourse hard reset is one of it. uhmm.. lets put hardreset aside first..

well.. cant wait to test this.. i made a whole backup of my registry so if thing went wrong.. ill just restore the registry backup..

Just export the StorageManager registry key before applying the changes, and if worst comes to worst restore your backed up original.

I made a cab with the regs and installed it But I'm still experimenting .. Nothing bad happened so far how do i know the device is faster ?!! how did you measured your device's speed ?

So let me get this straight -- it will use the microSD in my TyTN as RAM -- the icky sticky stuff I run out of because internet explorer, pocket player, and spb mobile shell grab it all for themselves?
Is there any way to specify how much of the SD card is used as RAM -- since I don't really need 1 GB of RAM on my device.
I saw your post about 558 MB free but didn't quite understand it. You also said you need the odd softreset to free memory? but why would you need to free up a few MB when you have access to hundreds?
But thanks for sharing with the community -- if this really does work out well for us, that's pretty freaking amazing.

Only it's set to use miniSD, i think you'd have to mess with it a little to make it work on miniSD... if response is good i'll make a mini version.
Remember - It's only been tested on wm6 hx4700!

in my case my program memory decreased by something around 10mb ! and I can't see any improvement in speed too ...

miniSD, hmm? Well that's the slightly-larger brother of my 1GB MicroSD. So I guess I'll just watch the thread and see others' reactions before I try anything (though I do have fullbackups)
Thanks for the quick response. So how much RAM does your hx4700 'have' now? and did you set it to 558 extra for a reason? Just curious questions from a person who doesn't understand the intricacies of reg editing

Use it for a while, constant usage should be smoother. Did you free the space up by deleting the old Program Files as well?
Use it to surf for a while, multiple windows style, and you'll notice the difference.
Also, don't be mean to my hack Don't load it to spite, wait for each app to load and keep on starting apps without (majorly) worrying about a system crash.

The age old method of feel
It doesn't boost anything per say, but your device shouldn't be as compaction ridden as it was, so less mem degradation over time=more time between resets under heavy work loads. and i mean heavy. also, multi-tasking is MUCH more usable.

I set it to have a 512Mb paging area on the SD, plus 512kb in main for caching and another 16Mb for caching on SD, so that's a total of 528.5Mb overall mem, 16.5Mb cache and half a gig paging (good for them internet chaches etc..

i check on the registry that u have made in ur reg hack. seems like all the folders etc is the same even for a miniSD card ... so do u think it will work on miniSD too?

How to increase the memory?

I have only a few things loaded into my phone and most of the programs are loaded into the memory card (8 gig). so why is it out of no where, i have only 9 Megs of memory left for storage!?!!?
since i'm on SPB Mobile Shell 3, can i just uninstall HTC's home thing? it's really obsolete now that the Shell 3 is not only beautiful but easy to use and very well laid out (which basically saying i did a good job laying it out).
what can be done to increase memory size? what is needed and what isn't?

dude, you must have a heap of stuff installed on your device. I install a fair bit of stuff with each new ROM, but generally have between 60 - 80 mb free.
you sure you haven't downloaded some stuff accidentally to your device instead of your storage card?

Sounds like your card could be corrupt.You could try put it in a card reader right click on your card in my computer click properties on under the tools tab click error checking.You could also try http://www.wizcode.com/products/view/pocket_mechanic_professional this is a demo but will let you scan your disk and fix cross linked files or corrupted volumes.

well, i started off with 6.0 and upgraded to the oem 6.1 rom. i've stuck with it since it's simple and didn't seem to have much problems based on feedbacks on this board. i'm not sure if the OEM rom is bloated or not. maybe... hum... i'll have to look into that.

i have SK tools but i've also used Pocket Mechanic before but i don't remember if it made any difference. i'll give it a try and report back. Thanks!

Try the just released ScanDisk Mobile, this is an improved version of the ScanDisk version used in Pocket Mechanic that can detect and fix much more issues than Pocket Mechanic. It will become an integral part of Pocket Mechanic v3 soon! By the way if anybody is interested in beta testing our newest product - Unformat Mobile please drop me a message. Unformat Mobile scans the card sector by sector and uses zero assumption data recovery algorithms for reconstructing pieces of files found without even relying on the file system. Basically it is able to recover files from a formatted or severely damaged storage cards and so far alpha testing gives lots of promises!

i did the unthinkable for me today. i did a hard reset so i'm starting from scratch. i'm not sure what happened but now i have what i suspect is the "normal" amount of phone storage size which is 78 megs.
i think when i did a restore on the phone, it doubled what was in storage thus causing the low amount of memory.
i guess sometimes it's good to do a hard reset to clean things up though i had my phone setup perfectly... exactly the way i want it except for the memory part.

I have a problem with my mobile, I mean I have Wi-Fi access and it works totally fine, the only problem I find is the RAM and the ROM memory.
ROM memory is 128 which is enough and It is free about 50 mb on my mobile, now comes RAM memory it is only 64mb and when I start device, it only shows me up as 20 MB free, and the only problem is with this RAM I can't use any good software, such as "Opera mobile" or other cool Navigators on the mobile,
When I launch them, it just says memory full........ (RAM MEMORY). Please cut a tab to get some memory and ask me frankly I have no tab open at that time
SO what I need is your help, as I am new to this all stuff, so I wan't to know is there is any way I can share my ROM memory with RAM memory? Or may be I can use my Memory card as RAM?? Or some thing like this? some other solution that my browser can be useable????

Windows don't release correctly memory and/or apps when existing.
A daily soft reset (just a reboot without loosing anything) will do the trick, to keep the RAM free...

So there is no other solution, because the problem is that when I install any good (advance) browser, it eats up all RAM on launching..
or may be you can tell me a good software (advanced browser) which doesn't eat a lot of resources

I had the same problem before to use oxio closeapps and using a task manager soft to close all apps.
After that I'm using TomTom, MioMap 3 and iGo 8 !!!!!!!!!
Really no problem!

Prophet Devices came out really with a very low RAM memory... so to avoid having memory problems specially with RAM heres what i do...
download 3 or just one of this programs...
1. ClearTemp by Vicott Wong
2. Oxios Hibernate from www.oxios.com
3. CleanRAM
see attached files
heres another thing that i do...
download Advanced Config (attached file) then tap it and go to performance tab and change the file system filter cache to 2048 and the file system cache size to auto. then soft reset
for a good browser that i use and ate less RAM i use Skyfire (attached too)
