Block 3G and GPRS when Wifi is on - Touch HD General

Is it possible to never activate 3G or GPRS when I have WIFI on, (when I´m surfing for eample) regardless if I´m connected to a network or not?
It´s cost me a lot of money when I surf on the 3G.. So it´s not necessary when I´m close to a WIFI-network..
Regards!

My HD (a stock one) always automatically use Wifi when it's available, and 3G/GPRS otherwise. I got this behavior from day one, without any specific tweak.

Mine still uses GPRS or HSDPA sometimes when I am connected to wifi. Doesn't bother me though as I have unlimited web on my contract... I think its a bug

why not turn of the data when your at home or what not? Its in the communications settings... that might help? temp fix but better than nothing.

If I do that, it just turns it back on! I think it is because it is continuously checking for email...

have you actually checked this with an app like spb gprs monitor?

When using Opera, I have to disconnect GPRS/EDGE in order for it to use WiFi. Internet Explorer seems to use the WiFi automatically when it is connected.

how to kill GPRS?

hi, got a HTC kaiser last week, was working fine, internet, email, tomtom.
but a few days ago i put an orange sim card in and now half the time i try to access the internet in anyway it connects to GPRS instead of wifi despite me being only a few feet away from the router.
i don't want GPRS, i don't want to pay for it so i disabled GPRS under comms manager but as soon as i do the button flicks back over and it reconnects and only sometimes give me an option to disconnect.

sounds good, how do i do that?
it should automatically connect you to wifi. even if the gprs signal is on, it should still be connecting through wifi regardless.

Easy
Start-settings-connections-connections again-manage existing connections-edit the one is active and change the values to anything you want.
Also as other members say there must be an app to do so, but I prefer to do it manually
Good luck,

How to make wifi the default option to connect instead of gprs?

How do I disable the phone from auto connecting to gprs? I tried testing it by launching opera without switching on wifi. The phone still connects through gprs although I turn data connection off. It will turn data connection on by itself. Even when I switch wifi on and want it to connect through wifi instead, it is still connecting through gprs. How do i solve this?
When wifi is "connected" (not only "on"), it uses wifi, no dataconnection.
If you really don't want a dataconnection, use something like NoData...
i tried NoData but it's not working. i'm using official htc wm6.5 rom.
Sorry I cannot be more precise because I don't use it anymore, but I remember there was an option to block data connection in HDTweak. Is that you want? Block dataconnection permanently? If so, you could alternatively delete your mobile operator connection in Settings/Connections. If anyone knows the registry changes involved in this, please post them so that I can make a .cab, I need it when roaming.
try MWLongLife! It's magic
this program is developed for saving battrey life by controlling 3G/2G network and data usage
you can set each program which need data access by 3G, WiFi, USB, etc.
Also, force to use Wifi rather than gprs if it's available.
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I tried installing nodata again and it worked this time.
for those interested there's also a cab to disable push internet completely (think that was the origin of your problem).
Search the forum on NoPushInternet

Yes please... I was about to post the same issue. I think the precedence in WM6.5 of using mobile wireless over WiFi is the wrong way around if the WiFi signal is strong. In my house, my WiFi is strong everywhere but 3G comes and goes. It's darn annoying to get the message about "No connectivity" when I know for sure there is a very good WiFi signal.
Cheers, Rob.
PS. Just had it whilst writing this email - "Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device..."
It's "WM" not "MW".

Why does my HD2 keep connecting to the internet? (on its own)

Every now and then, I notice that my phone connects to the internet (t-mobile internet). I find this strange because I've disabled everything (i can think of) from automatically updating or connecting (weather, email and msMyPhone). I have an unlimited data plan so I'm not particularly worried about the cost; however, it drains my battery fast. Just yesterday, I tapped the top of the screen to see my notifications and I noticed that t-mobile internet had been connected for over 2 hours. I just can’t figure out the cause. I've even done the auto disconnect registry tweak (auto disconnect after 60 seconds) but still no joy. If anyone can help or even suggest a process monitoring application, I’d be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

Did you disable the rest of the services ( HTC location service, stocks, Internet time sync, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube as well ? In my case the Stock were causing unwanted connections before I figured out..

I think stock was the culprit. I removed it from the home tab from day one and as a result couldnt access it's settings. I put it back on and sure enough it was connecting every 30 mins.
Thanks alot mate. I'll report back in a day or two with the results, though I'm pretty certain it was the stock application.
If you want to be able to turn internet off so it cant connect when you dont want it to then just install the attached cab, run the program then you can enable or disable both settings as appropriate.
I also recommend to use NoData.
Just go to settings->wireless control->connection->advance->select network(choose my work connection if you havent rename it yet) If you would like to use hsdpa/edge/gprs again you will have to change it to as it was before.

Even better, you can use Dial-up Enabler/Disabler: works like nodata but interface is a little better and is more user friendly ;-)

Pls note that with nodata, you disable the internet connection but, if the connection is active while disabling it, you still need to end it manually after exiting nodata.
This sounds weird I know...
With dial-up enabler/dsabler it is a lot easier as you will see two connections: one is the internet connection configured on your phone and the other is the current active connection, and you can disable them at the same time.
In addition it does not have annoying confirmation messages on disabling and exiting

how do u do auto disconnection tweak
HD2 connection problem
Connect your HD2 to your computer and transfer the cad file to your mobile.
Find the file on your phone using File Explorer (on the phone).
Double click on it and follow the instructions.
Then go to Start and locate the nodata programme.
Start it and disable what you want.
I disabled the Orange (in my case) internet connection and WAP.
In my case it is crucial that I donet't g automatic access to internet services when I roam because I am on a PAYG tariff.
£20 last me up to three months normally with a different phone (SIC) and since I started using my HD2 my last top up lasted me less than a week.
It's a rip-off!
Once beaten, twice shy...
I won't be caught again!
Hope this helps

3G vs WiFi

Hi,
My HD2 always takes the 3G connection by default rather than the WiFi. I have changed the connections to take work connection by default for internet and work and it stills uses my 3G.
Any thoughts?

From what I've seen, it appears to use the best connection that's available at the time of starting an app. So if you start Opera and then turn on wifi, it's already started its connection so it doesn't change it. Does that make sense?
Mine, without fail, uses wifi over 3G, as long as it's on and connected before I start an app.

The only application that starts the 3G connection over the Wi-Fi is Windows Live. At least to me. All other applications use the "cheaper" connection. Therefore, if Wi-Fi is switched on, it will use this connection.
I had exactly the same problem, by messing around in the Connections settings I managed to eventually sort it out though I can not remember exactly how, sorry I can not be of more help
That makes sense thanks guys. Also, if my 3G is disabled, it automatically connects it even if its using WiFi then continues to use WiFi.
Any ideas?

Use, for example, the NoData application from MoDaCo. There's also another one in this forum with a TouchFlo layout. If you disable the 3G connection, it will force to use the WiFi.
That did the trick mate, Thanks

Updates & Email using WiFi only?

Hey all,
I'm on my 3rd htc device and I should have asked this question ages ago!
With things like weather updates and emails is it possible to have them automatically update and download when I'm using WiFi without it trying to open a gprs connection at all other times?
I would also be interested because coming from a symbian phone I really dont like that the phone does not ask me which access point I want to use and that gprs connection is the primary one to use on win mo phone. Nokia is better for me from this point of view, you have to choose which access point to use and there is no way you surf on the net thinking you are on wifi while in reality you are using gprs.
As a former Symbian user, I must agree. 1 point for Symbian, and inexcusably lame for Windows Mobile. Let's hope that this is something that can be worked out in an update to 6.5.x while we wait....and wait.... and wait for WP7.

No, there's no way to force wifi. If wifi is connected it will use it, but if it hits the time where it's set to autoupdate, and no wifi is available, it will connect to gprs.
but... if you are in a WiFI area, but without data service, you are SOL, because it won't use the WiFi for the status updates, email, etc.
Pretty dumb, really.
use bsb tweak to disable all mobile data connections or use nodata program... then it wont be able to try to connect while its not on wifi... but u wont be able to use data connections either unless u enable them again
Of course it does use wifi if it's connected and no other connection is present... I'm doing that every day!
When I arrive home I turn on wifi, disconnect data if it was connected, and I can do all I want, it will use wifi and not try to connect data.
is there a way to auto-download once wifi or data connection is detected? my carrier charges me bigtime for every connection access and not by the minute oe data use.. so I just want everything to update automatically in 1 access without manually doing so for each..

If disable my data connection, and enable WiFI, and then choose the Weather tab and Update Now... nothing happens. It tries... it fails. Always has on every ROM I've used.
Does it not do this for you, for example?
If I reverse the process.... enable my data connection and disable WiFI.... choose Weather tab, and Update Now.... it works!
Why should such an integral part of the Homescreen UI be utterly and completely dependent on a data connection?
That's something I do not understand.

No, if I do that it works perfectly.
I'd say you have a connectivity problem with your Wifi.. does it work to browse then net in Opera? Wouldn't you use a proxy by any chance?
that's sometimes a problem of synchronization of your wifi router and your device (e.g. dhcp or timeout reconnect of your wifi router)
try this:
switch on router and then wifi on your device.
then start quickgps and try to update.if it fails, then try again quickgps.
if it works on second time then it's because of this synchronization...but update weather should work now by wifi.

Opera and every other connection works. I think it has something to do with my location. It could be that my ISP or my service provider is part of the problem.
Oh one thing I forgot:
In wifi options, advanced, network cards, network cards tab, make sure it's set that your network card connects to the Internet, not Work.
That could be it.
