Where to buy X1A ("american" version) - XPERIA X1 General

I have the X1i
Overall very pleased with the phone, but able only to use GSM/EDGE because my provider works over 850MHz
I´d like to get the X1A too
Best Buy and Sony Style are taking pre-orders for january, not in stock...
Where can I buy one ??
Are they (X1A) already -really- "released" ??

Not already available ???

...eBay? A few auctions are for the X1a version. Make sure you ask the seller which version it is!

yeah they had them and i guess they are on back order now. i got lucky and bought mine online from sony before thanks giving and received it a week afterwards.
dont know why they are on back order, must be a hot item.

This question has been asked and asked on this sub-forum, I know ... but:
1) which region are you in, please ? I don't mean actual location, suburb etc but rather city or country area ?
2) if city, have you yet tested 3G connection in a country area?
3) if country, have you yet tested 3G connection in a city area ?
The reason behind these questions is to ascertain whether the A version of the device can connect to both UMTS850Mhz and 2100Mhz

im from san diego-city area and i get the h instead of the 3g. they are the same but i think because its unbranded, it shows the h instead of the 3g.
im in florida right now and i still get the h.

You get the H because it is really HSPA. I have actually on occasion seen the 3G icon on my X1a.

speeds, hsdpa is faster than 3g. depends on the roll out by your network to how many of the old 3g cells have been upgraded to hsdpa

when you mean 3g cells, you are talking phones? i have two phones, the x1a (unlocked/unbranded) and another cell thats is 3g capable (at&t branded). the x1a shows H, and the other one 3g. i have not seen 3g icon on my x1a and so i thought 3g was only an at&t thing. the only thing that i dont know, is what 3g band my at&t phone supports (850, 2100 or both)

talking towers. although the phones themselves will be causing some confusion.
a HSDPA cell tower will be able to take traffic for Voice or Data on GPRS, 3G or HSDPA depending on your phone. If the phone can't handle HSDPA you'll only see 3G whilst a phone which can will have H
However if you are on a 3G cell tower, it will only be able to do Vocie, GPRS and 3G, so both phones will see 3G

thanks for the clarification.

One correction. You see H is you have both HSDPA and HSUPA. If you see 3G, you most likely do have HSDPA, but just not HSUPA. Most carriers rolled out HSDPA with UMTS and are adding HSUPA after.
3G = UMTS
3.5G = HSPA (HSDPA + HSUPA)

ummm HSPA is still 3G.
the only thing special about 3.5G marketing is that they mean faster speed support like 7 Mbps instead of just 3 Mbps. The HSPA specification can go up to 14 Mbps.

Good question.
My carrier/provider works ONLY over 850MHz: both GSM and UMTS
With my european SE X1 I am getting ONLY GSM/EDGE signal
I have tested 3G with 850MHz phones in my city and I have pick strong 3G signal (not to mention FASST internet ), but again: with the X1i I can't get UMTS service...

i got my x1a from sonystyle.com when it was first released in November.

Interesting.......no tweaks?
Just have to see....3G won't be available in my area until the beginning of the year anyway
UPDATE:
T-Mobile 3G works on my I-Mate Jasjar in the Jacksonville Florida area. The only adjustments I had to make was a minor MMS settings change.
Anybody in the northwest US able to connect to T-Mobile's 3G network?
I try to force my band to WCDMA and specify the UMTS freq as 2100, but then it simply doesn't seem to want to register with the network. When I set it to auto, it appears to simply be using GPRS.
Somewhat related, anybody know of a way to force displaying an icon indicating EDGE vs default GPRS connection?
Edit: I just recalled that there's no EDGE support on the Uni, unless I'm mistaken, so disregard that...
Edit (again): So if I'm understanding this properly... The Uni only operates on UMTS/WCDMA/whatever 2100, not 1700, which T-Mobile US uses. It was designed for uk/other 3G usage, not future US 3G usage. So we've got 3G support outside the US, but as far as I can tell - we shouldn't be able to use 3G in the US, at least on T-Mobile's network, since they're using 1700 mhz band/AWS range, and the 2100 mhz band used elsewhere is not compatible. I THINK. I'm honestly just learning about this sort of thing now as I go, despite having had my Uni for a while and having known about T-Mobile rolling out 3G coverage for some time.

Could you give some more details on this?
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think the deal is basically, as postulated by orb3000 - no 3G for US Universal users.
I was told by a T-Mobile rep on the phone that if I can connect to 1700 or 2100 mhz band, I should be able to use 3G... So I wonder... Huh.

So can you confirm if T-Mobile uses 1700/2100 as:
1700 down/2100 up
1700 voice/2100 data
1700 OR 2100?
Because I've seen a lot of different things saying different things. =/
Incidentally, please go to http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed and tell me what speed you get on your phone.

T-Mobile uses 1700 AND 2100 mhz bands....sent and recieved data ARE NOT SPLIT between the two bands.....voice and data ARE NOT split between bands.
Ill check my speed tonight when I get off work....
I can see the difference between 3G and GPRS though. I have a HTC Wizard that supports EDGE, and my Imate JasJar is only slightly faster than my Wizard. My girlfriend has the new Mobile G1 and her 3G speed run rings around my Imate JasJar internet speed this is probably so because the age of our Universals.

I have a Qtek 9000 and am waiting for the 3G coverage for my area with T-Mobile which should be in the spring of 2009. Over the past few years I have done a great deal of research on this and have also spoken to very knowledgeable Tier 3 T-Mobile staff that are familiar with this and this is what they told me. The universal will work on the 2100 frequency with T-Mobile. T-Mobile will be using the 1700 & 2100 frequency bands in the U.S. for 3G frequency. I know when I visited my relatives in Germany in 2004 Year in the summer as I can speak, read & write German as good as English even though I am first generation in the U.S. which I visit my relatives every 5 years and due to visit them in the summer of 2009 year. The 2100 band was already released in the spring of 2004 year in Germany. But since T-Mobile has only certain cities available that have the 3G coverage in the U.S. which is spotty at this time. Since the T-Mobile G1 was deployed in October this should make the rollout faster in the U.S. for the 1700 & 2100 mhz frequency. Can you please confirm on your I-mate Jasjar on what your 3G speeds are? They should be at least 384 k.p.s. It is also nice to know that the send & receive data, voice & data are not slit between the two bands of 1700 & 2100 mhz frequency.

Park and ATLDON, thanks for all the info - this is all very good to know, and great news for US Universal users. I'll just have to wait for 3G 2100 to be active here in Portland, then.
Oh, and ATLDON - one more question. Under your Phone Settings, where you can select GSM and UMTS band and Network Type, did you set it to Auto, or force UMTs, or did you even change anything?

this is interesting stuff, i just got my jasjar as an anniversary gift from my girlfriend and i love the device however anyone that has used HSDPA which i had on my kaiser before i sold it 500-900k going to GPRS has been something that would make one want to cry, and its good news to hear this because i need some form of high speed again, and i'd like to confirm this working because i am going to get a t-mobile prepaid or flex paid sim ASAP to get this going, i am in new york anyone from around here to confirm 2100Mhz?
also anyone able to do a screenshot ?
Funny, I was just trying to get an answer as to whether or not there was a delay in deploying 3G over 1700 vs 2100 mhz to a given area, and I ended up being told "definitively" that unless my handset is able to connect to both freqs, I would be unable to utilize 3G access. CONFUSION. I think there are some disconnects between staff at the T-Mobile customer support, and I haven't really gotten much further than what I would imagine to be tier-two tech support.
I trust in ATLDON's success story, so... Maybe I'll just have to wait and see.
Do you get a 3G indicator somewhere in the taskbar or system tray when you're connected? And what was the MMS setting you had to change? What server are you using for net access? Do you have the $6/mo T-MobileWeb access or one of the other plans?
Sorry for all the questions, just very curious and hopeful that I would soon be able to really use my Uni.

The 3G indicators don't work on the 6.1 Roms I use. I havent tried any of the WM 5 roms to see if their indicators work
The MMS connect, I had to change it from T-Mobile MMS to the Internet to send/receive multimedia.
I have the 19.99 unlimited data plan.
I use epc.tmobile.com
Are there any other US Uni users in different areas who can report 3G connectivity?
Thus far I've found my own interactions with T-Mobile tech support to be thoroughly useless in getting any sort of details on AWS/3G/2100mhz deployment (maybe I'm just not talking to the right people?)
So, a couple weeks later (and still impatient ) - anyone else in the US with a Universal able to access T-Mobile's 3G network?

Forcing a 3G Band?

I bought an Xperia X1i and get good Edge coverage in south florida. I believe there are still some 1900Mhz 3G bands around though as I randomly switch from E to G and then back to E again.. the G shows lower signal for a few seconds and then goes to E.
Is there any way to force the phone to try and use 1900Mhz 3G band? Most of the area is 850Mhz and obviously the X1i doesn't support that for 3G.
Thanks!

No sense forcing that band if it's not even available in the area. Here in Miami I get no 1900mhz 3G on my X1i, but I get really nice 850mhz 3G on my N95-4.
Any reason why I randomly see the G icon on the top instead of E?

That means GPRS instead of EDGE. I guess you're going into an area that doesn't even have EDGE access... it won't matter if you have a X1a or X1i, the GSM frequencies are the same, so the GPRS and EDGE behaviors will be the same also. Although if you have a 3G signal with the X1a, then you wouldn't really care much if you're getting only GPRS on the GSM connection

I'm wondering the same as I am in the Toronto area and have access to only 850mhz EDGE. It would be great if it were possible to force the X1i to use 1900mhz UMTS so that we could possibly get on the 3G network. 850 seems to be prevalent in my area so the X1i always hops on that band.
On a side note, does anyone know if it would be possible to extract the radio rom from an X1a and flash it to an X1i? I know that HardSPL just had a breakthrough, and the only way I can think this would be impossible was if the hardware is different. (I know the CPU is 7200A vs 7201A, but not sure if the radio bands are designated in hardware or software).
I would be willing to donate if a solution was found to get the X1i working on UMTS 850, or even forcing it to 1900. I can only access EDGE at the moment, and I only get 30kbps on average which is quite ****e.
Anyways, hopefully we can make some progress with this, because I'm sure there are a lot of X1i users in North America who wanted the VGA recording capabilities, but also want 3G on UMTS 850. The VGA video encoding is near-impossible to hack back into the X1a, but I think we could go the other way around and get the X1a radio stack working on the X1i.
Otherwise, I could just be in dreamland...
Not to say its impossible. But from my experience with mobile baseband chips, the hardware is not there to support the 850MHz 3G band in the X1i. Hopefully someone can prove me wrong, but I don't think anyone will.
Thank you for this thread cuz I was about to make the same mistake as I did with the touch pro, ie. buying an Xperia. Ebay has some that says they support 850MHz but from what you folks are saying this isn't true. Is that correct? I guess I'll just a bit on this purchase.
An X1a will have 850, but at present only a few press versions are about.
I would wait until it is offically released in the US

A question about HSDPA

I hope someone can answer me this question, please. I want to hopefully understand something before I purchase a Blackstone. My phone carrier is AT&T, and I live in an area that has 3G coverage. Supposedly this area also has HSDPA. I understand already that the HD will not work on AT&T's 3G, but will it work on the HSDPA? I *think* that HSDPA would be fast enough, yes? I tried to look this up, but I am not 100 percent sure of what I am reading... please all, forgive that I didn't understand enough to figure this out myself. Is there someone out there who also has this carrier and can verify that I will be able to surf faster than EDGE? I want to eventually use the secondary camera of the device to make video calls - I have Deaf family members who can be contacted by videophones and I want to do that some day with the HD!! Any and all help is apprecated.
u prolly have your answer by now, but i can fill in here...
HSDPA will work... i have an experia that won't say3G, but does say H and i'm getting speeds of 1100kbps which is 3G speeds... so you are good to go on that part...
As for video calling... you won't get it... i'm not gettin it at all even tho i have modified my phone for it to work... its an AT&T thing... apparently they maybe supporting it in the next few months (so i've read)... knock on wood cuz that would be ground breaking for the USA
HSDPA will not work. HSDPA is a form of 3g (HSDPA/HSPA/UMTS). The HD does not support At&T or any other US carrier 3g frequencies. You will have EDGE

technically, neither does the x1i i have... but in the discription it does say 850/900/1800/1900 for both phones...
and my phone does not say E... it says H... the hardware are almost identical between the 2 phones...
there were alot of naysayers about the x1i and 3g speeds... but when i got it, popped in the sim card... my internet was BLAZING....
Connectivity: Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA / HSPA: 900/2100MHz. HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
as you can see, the HD supports 3g on 900/2100 (which US networks do not operate 3g on). Although 850 is a 3g frequency for at&t, the HD does not search for HSDPA on that frequency and only for EDGE and, therefore, you'll only get EDGE
Svegetto is correct. I have the HD and I am on AT&T. All I get is the big E. It is faster than it used to be, but it is still Edge.

Of course, the X1i can have HSDPA -why not?
That has been one of the most important things to me because I have much data transfer.
what i mean was i live in US so there should be no 3G or H signal that X1i should pick up since it only has 900/1900/2100 3G bands

Hmmm...this I cannot say because I don't know the networks in US. Isn't there another version for America -the X1a? I think I heard something like that.
Just can say, HSDPA works fine in Austria/Europe
ok as i know, US 3G should be 850 and 1900 bands and most of the Att 3G are 850 last time i had a diamond and it never went on to H or 3G at the same location, but this time it has H.

You say you have an X1i ?
What does Settings>System>About>Device ID say, please ?
Also, are you living in/near a city or in a regional area ?
ATT mostly uses 1900 for 3g. Also the H means you have HSDPA and HSUPA. If you only had HSDPA it would just say 3G.
yeah att use 1900 which 3g phones from outside usa can also use but
tmobile use 2100 or something
this is also the reason why people from europe can use american iphone 3g's

I got "connection problem or invalid MMI code" when I ran that.
Edit: Did a bit more research and it turns out that it does *not* support 1900 MHz UTMS for 3G, so basically, this phone + ATT network = no 3G service, as the hardware is incompatible.

Can you explain what you mean by "use *#0011# and make sure the bands are unlocked"? My Samsung phone can't get 4g service here on T-Mobile and it doesn't do 3G so I'd really like to enable HSPA+ if that's possible. I don't see anything on that screen that I can unlock though.

Check which UMTS (3G) bands your phone supports - I suspect yours does not support T-Mobile's 3G band (IV). The information is usually available on wikipedia or gsmarena.
You do not "enable" 3G through software changes. Your phone supports it or it doesn't.

Check which UMTS (3G) bands your phone supports - I suspect yours does not support T-Mobile's 3G band (IV). The information is usually available on wikipedia or gsmarena.

It does support band IV, 1700Mhz, but it doesn't do HSPA+ so it can't get 3G. That screen still doesn't tell me anything though.
GSMArena says it has 3G Networking on HSDPA 850 / 1700 / 2100 / 1900 but that's not true. There is no 2100Mhz band, not on mine anyway. Actually GSMArena isn't very complete or very accurate, it don't even list the model T959V!

That's not how HSPA+ works - it's essentially just faster 3G. Also, I found your phone on GSMArena, not sure how you searched but the information is all there and it supports band IV (1700/2100) and I (2100).
Are you sure you've enabled 3G (or deselected "Use only 2G networks")?
What is the history of the phone (bought new, used, etc.)? It should "just work" on T-Mobile as it's T-Mobile branded but, no offense, your details are a little vague.

Sorry if I was vague but it doesn't "just work" on T-Mobile! At first I though all Exhibit II models would be the same however they could have different versions like the Galaxy 2 that has an older version for 3G and a newer version that also now gets 4G, who knows.
The phone was purchased new a few months ago and is still stock. I know HSPA+ is faster 3G since I can get it on 1700Mhz on another device using the T-Mobile SIM from the Exhibit 2. Can't get HSPA+ or 3G on the Exhibit 2 though.
Yes the phone is on GSMArena but the info is not accurate, it claims the phone gets 3G and has a 2100Mhz band but that's not true. It only supports band IV on 1700.
There is no option to enable 3G or "Use only 2G networks". It has options for WCDMA (for 4G on 1700) or GSM (for Edge on 1900) but there is no setting in between for 3G or HSPA+. I tried setting it to WCDMA only but it defaults back to Auto using Edge unless I go to a T-Mobile store where they have a strong 4G signal that gives 5 bars. If I leave the store and go down the street there's no signal though.
I have verified that WCDMA for 4G is on 1700 and GSM for Edge is on 1900 using a spectrum analyzer but it never uses 2100 and has never used 3G anywhere in the Phoenix, Mesa or Scottsdale area, just Edge. There may be other modes and frequencies but I haven't been able to verify them.
If there is a way to turn on 3G I'd like to know what it is? Someone suggested dialing *#32489# clicking #3 then UTMS but that didn't do anything.

I don't know where to begin but let me get this straight...
-You bought a new Exhibit II from T-Mobile.
-It doesn't get 3G outside of the store.
-Your other T-Mobile compatible device gets 3G outside of the store.
-You've owned this same Exhibit II which hasn't been connecting to 3G for months.
On these points alone, am I understanding you correctly?

Close but not quite correct, it doesn't get 4G outside of the store.
It can't get 3G at all anywhere!
Since there is no 4G network is there a way to turn on or enable 3G or is it hopeless?

In a previous post you said that you "know" what I'm talking about but clearly that is not the case.
What T-Mobile calls 4G is actually 3G with improvements to the backhaul as well as the radios on the phones - where T-Mobile has 4G, it also has 3G.
The point of my last post was to make it obvious that you have a defective phone. I shouldn't have assumed you would figure it as you haven't figured it out in the months you've owned a phone that obviously has reception issues.

Again not true! What they call 4G is using WCDMA but 3G is using HSPA+. 3G using HSPA+ has improvements that will allow it to go up to 20Mb but my Android phone doesn't have an option for 3G, just 4G using WCDMA. The people at the T-Mobile stores would beg to differ with you about the phone being bad since I've been to 5 T-Mobile stores and they say the phone works OK since it can get 4G on 1700Mhz in the store.

Your posts are too long to be trolling, but it still feels like you are because everything you post is wrong.
In case you're not trolling:
-Your phone has hardware defects that are affecting how well it connects to 3G.
-The fact that you get reception in stores is likely because stores have signal boosters.
-Retail employees are idiots. They are trained to use the products just enough to sell them (read: not much) and aren't paid enough to attract anyone with half a brain to the position. Walk a block away from the store and show them that your phone doesn't connect to 3G (or "4G" if you still want to call it that).

Both of you are feeling like you're trolling.
It may be a tower issue or your phone. The only way to check is to use another phone.
