I was wondering why I can only get EDGE on my TMobile G2 phone... is it because of the GSM incompatibility that some TMobile phones have with the ATT network or am I doing something wrong?
Does your phone support 1900 MHz UTMS? That would be a problem. If it does then use *#0011# and make sure the bands are unlocked.

I got "connection problem or invalid MMI code" when I ran that.
Edit: Did a bit more research and it turns out that it does *not* support 1900 MHz UTMS for 3G, so basically, this phone + ATT network = no 3G service, as the hardware is incompatible.

Someone doing their own research? Get the hell out.
Actually, I don't think the G2 even does 3G on anything but AWS. The HTC Desire Z (identical but without carrier branding) has a version that supports AT&T 3G, however.

Can you explain what you mean by "use *#0011# and make sure the bands are unlocked"? My Samsung phone can't get 4g service here on T-Mobile and it doesn't do 3G so I'd really like to enable HSPA+ if that's possible. I don't see anything on that screen that I can unlock though.

Check which UMTS (3G) bands your phone supports - I suspect yours does not support T-Mobile's 3G band (IV). The information is usually available on wikipedia or gsmarena.
You do not "enable" 3G through software changes. Your phone supports it or it doesn't.

It does support band IV, 1700Mhz, but it doesn't do HSPA+ so it can't get 3G. That screen still doesn't tell me anything though.
GSMArena says it has 3G Networking on HSDPA 850 / 1700 / 2100 / 1900 but that's not true. There is no 2100Mhz band, not on mine anyway. Actually GSMArena isn't very complete or very accurate, it don't even list the model T959V!

That's not how HSPA+ works - it's essentially just faster 3G. Also, I found your phone on GSMArena, not sure how you searched but the information is all there and it supports band IV (1700/2100) and I (2100).
Are you sure you've enabled 3G (or deselected "Use only 2G networks")?
What is the history of the phone (bought new, used, etc.)? It should "just work" on T-Mobile as it's T-Mobile branded but, no offense, your details are a little vague.

Sorry if I was vague but it doesn't "just work" on T-Mobile! At first I though all Exhibit II models would be the same however they could have different versions like the Galaxy 2 that has an older version for 3G and a newer version that also now gets 4G, who knows.
The phone was purchased new a few months ago and is still stock. I know HSPA+ is faster 3G since I can get it on 1700Mhz on another device using the T-Mobile SIM from the Exhibit 2. Can't get HSPA+ or 3G on the Exhibit 2 though.
Yes the phone is on GSMArena but the info is not accurate, it claims the phone gets 3G and has a 2100Mhz band but that's not true. It only supports band IV on 1700.
There is no option to enable 3G or "Use only 2G networks". It has options for WCDMA (for 4G on 1700) or GSM (for Edge on 1900) but there is no setting in between for 3G or HSPA+. I tried setting it to WCDMA only but it defaults back to Auto using Edge unless I go to a T-Mobile store where they have a strong 4G signal that gives 5 bars. If I leave the store and go down the street there's no signal though.
I have verified that WCDMA for 4G is on 1700 and GSM for Edge is on 1900 using a spectrum analyzer but it never uses 2100 and has never used 3G anywhere in the Phoenix, Mesa or Scottsdale area, just Edge. There may be other modes and frequencies but I haven't been able to verify them.
If there is a way to turn on 3G I'd like to know what it is? Someone suggested dialing *#32489# clicking #3 then UTMS but that didn't do anything.

I don't know where to begin but let me get this straight...
-You bought a new Exhibit II from T-Mobile.
-It doesn't get 3G outside of the store.
-Your other T-Mobile compatible device gets 3G outside of the store.
-You've owned this same Exhibit II which hasn't been connecting to 3G for months.
On these points alone, am I understanding you correctly?

Close but not quite correct, it doesn't get 4G outside of the store.
It can't get 3G at all anywhere!
Since there is no 4G network is there a way to turn on or enable 3G or is it hopeless?

In a previous post you said that you "know" what I'm talking about but clearly that is not the case.
What T-Mobile calls 4G is actually 3G with improvements to the backhaul as well as the radios on the phones - where T-Mobile has 4G, it also has 3G.
The point of my last post was to make it obvious that you have a defective phone. I shouldn't have assumed you would figure it as you haven't figured it out in the months you've owned a phone that obviously has reception issues.

Again not true! What they call 4G is using WCDMA but 3G is using HSPA+. 3G using HSPA+ has improvements that will allow it to go up to 20Mb but my Android phone doesn't have an option for 3G, just 4G using WCDMA. The people at the T-Mobile stores would beg to differ with you about the phone being bad since I've been to 5 T-Mobile stores and they say the phone works OK since it can get 4G on 1700Mhz in the store.

Your posts are too long to be trolling, but it still feels like you are because everything you post is wrong.
In case you're not trolling:
-Your phone has hardware defects that are affecting how well it connects to 3G.
-The fact that you get reception in stores is likely because stores have signal boosters.
-Retail employees are idiots. They are trained to use the products just enough to sell them (read: not much) and aren't paid enough to attract anyone with half a brain to the position. Walk a block away from the store and show them that your phone doesn't connect to 3G (or "4G" if you still want to call it that).

that would be a no then, 2100Mhz is what the athena is capable of AFAIK
I have used the Athena on both T-Mobile and AT&T Networks in the US without issues.

that seems odd, Current roms do not have the T-Mobile US band included, nor is the current radio capable of running the t-mobile 1700 band in the USA. ATT band is 3g/UTMS 850/1900 and Europe is 3g/UTMS 800/2100
T-Mobile Edge would work fine though
Hi, sometimes the 3g pop's up on my x7501 its not all the time but next time it does I will take a screen shot of it. Maybe its an error I have no idea...TJ
some roms incorrectly show that instead of edge !
Ok thanks...TJ
So is it possible to get T-mo 3g on athena?
T-mo finally rooled out 3g in my area, I thought my athena was 3g capable and could fly through the internet and never deal with slate Flinstone tablets and EDGE again! Sadly we do?
Their 3g is rolled out on 1700/2100 band only, so to exit the EDGE stone age, we must buy the G1 (not even close to x7501) or ask a crazy question to those in the know. Is the frequency band offered on a phone limited and fixed by the ROM / hardware, or is it software driven where a patch / upgrade could expand it's operantional band to include 1700/2100 UMTS alongside the voice 850/1900 band?
I can connect easily to TMobile. I get the "E" sign showing on the antennae.

It is hardware driven. Unfortunately this is why I'm going to switch over to AT & T because of the downgrade to get 3g service from a phone that NO OTHER Networks in the world uses is pointless IMHO. I don't know what T Mo was drinking or smoking, and when I asked the level 1 techs they said no future talks or expectations of using the NORMAL 1900/2100 Frequency like other 3g networks. Sux if you ask me.
Thanks for the note on hardware capability
I got similar responses from the techs at T-mo except I also got a moment of false hope when one incorrectly told me that their 3g is on 1900, I went nuts trying, then called back & someone else told me that it was in fact on 1700/2100. As I've been reading, their reason (though a huge pain in the ass for us) was to separate voice and data so one wouldn't steal bandwith from the other. Makes sense, though it would be easier to deal with if I had some REAL options other than G1 and crappy kids phones.
Since T-Mo has the best price for some pretty decent service (except EDGE that is), I've heard of some T-Mo users getting just an AT&T data plan alongside T-Mo voice, I'm not sure how it's done, do you need 1/2 simms, or what. If you find yourself doing this, I would like to hear your feedback.
Otherwise, I'll keep my fingers crossed that HTC will use some common sense, and use 1700/2100 in future US versions.
I have a GSM Touch Diamond and there's no way to use the US 3G even if you have a 3G sim, we discussed it in the Diamond forum and people said it's just not possible. Is this the case with the Blackstone or are you able to use 3G in the US?
if you use a 3 sim you can get service if 3 got a roaming agreement with an usa isp
if the usa isp don't use 3g services on the hz's the rest of the world use you can only get
2g or 2.5g (edge) service
the Telstra Touch HD version (Blackstone - T8285) uses at&t's 850 3G band. it works quite well in the US as long as one is in an area that uses more 850 3G towers vs. 1900 3G towers.

it's 3G from at&t, period. as i mentioned in my post, the Telstra HD is limited to using at&t's 850 3G band. at&t uses both 850/1900 to deliver 3G. if you're in an area that uses only/more 1900 3G towers then you may not have 3G access. i believe Phoenix, AZ is an example. can't comment on the speed with an at&t phone because i don't own one. the pic below is an example of the speed i get with my Telstra HD on at&t.

i can't say if it won't work at all. for example, if there are 100 towers and 95 are 1900 and 5 are 850 and, you live near an 850 tower, (theoretically) you should get 3G access. using your example, i would say you'd be connected to Edge more often than 3G.

if i remember correctly, there's a user here named tucomora who lives in Houston and has a Telstra HD. i believe he indicated that Houston may have more 1900 towers than 850s. but, as you may know, at&t is adding more 850 towers nation wide. i suggest you send tucomora a PM to get his perspective on using the HD in south texas.

Would you not be able to go into the phone's settings and disable the 1900 band or something? why would you want to disable the UMTS 1900 3G band? if there are no 850 3G towers, you won't get 3G service you'll get EDGE instead. my phone options are set to Auto for GSM and UMTS and if there are no 850 3G towers it switches to EDGE. simple as that, not a big deal for me (and not implying that it is to you). you can change the GSM/UMTS settings to seek/use only 850/1900 3G towers, but in my experience, if the HD doesn't find an 850 3G tower, i won't have a phone signal, period. if you're in the US and want a HD with 3G capabilities, you get the Telstra Touch HD and accept the fact that having only one US 3G band (e.g., 850 3G) will limit 3G access in some areas.

If there are 850 towers but just not as many as 1900 towers, you could disable 1900 so it only connects to the 850 towers and then you'd have 3G, right? That's what I was saying. I have EDGE on the Diamond but it's so slow it makes me not want to use it most of the time.

uh, no it doesn't work like that. the phone is going to lock onto the strongest signal possible. if it sees a stronger 1900 signal, that's what the phone will use. if you (could) disable the 1900 band and you're in an area with 1900 towers, you would not have ANY signal at all, no phone, no data. based on your level of concern, wait for the at&t TP2 (or whatever it's called); then you'll have no worries about 3G access.

chargers yes, batteries no. The Telstra ROM that comes with your device will have its internet connection settings locked to Telstra (which we can't obviously use in the US). this means you won't be able to access the internet from your phone until you add at&t's connection settings. i never researched methods to add at&t's connection settings so i don't know if they exist. i flashed HardSPL to my device so i could install a custom ROM. i suggest you click the link in my signature and learn about flashing new ROMS. hope you enjoy your device!

No such luck chief. The only 3G band on the G2 is AWS. It will only work on carriers like T-Mobile (USA), and Wind (Canada).
The stock Desire Z, however, has HSDPA 900 / 2100 and should work in most non-US countries on 3G, but check your carriers bands first. The downside, Desire Z has 1.5 GB storage, the G2 has 4 GB.

Unfortunately I think you are going to be disappointed. I posted a buzz about this a while back. You can look at page 3 of the test report in the FCC submission. The nutshell summary is that the device will only support Band IV for 3G, or in other words T-Mo US' UMTS 1700. This is unfortunate since I used my unlocked G1 quite a lot overseas, thanks to its UMTS 900/2100.
You'll probably have to go with a Desire Z if you want this device with European radios.
Can't believe it's for real...I mean, the 2-year-old G1 does that...and what about people working overseas?
That's a MAJOR fault from T-Mobile, and it's totally weird to say the least.

Oh, it gets better. I only paid attention to the UMTS bands when I read the report, assuming that any modern smartphone would be a quad-band GSM device. Turns out the G2 is only GSM 850/1900, which means this device is truly unusable in Europe and Asia.
Wait a minute, what GSM bands are used in Asia?
The HTC site says otherwise : http://www.htc.com/us/products/t-mobile-g2#tech-specs
According to T-Mobile and HTC sites specs, the phone is GSM quad band (850, 900, 1800, 1900).
The HTC site says "UMTS: Yes"

Europe and Asia are GSM 900/1800, generally. What is interesting is that the HTC page claims the G2 is quadband, but the FCC testing documents don't show any 900/1800 data at all. The phone cannot legally operate in the U.S. in that band unless testing data has been submitted to the FCC. I'm wondering if HTC marketing just c&p from the Desire Z specs and forgot to edit the GSM infos. We'll see soon enough I suppose.
it doesn't make sense why they would release a phone that wasnt quad band. it must be a mistake. it is like power seats on a luxury car. it's just there lol.
So a unlocked G2 could be used on WINDs network here in Canada (because they use the same frequency), can some one confirm this please

Wind uses AWS (UMTS Band IV)... So, yes. But if they do not have HSPA+ enhancements you won't get the famed and promised super speed. The phone should be able to be used on USA (T-Mobile, Cincinnati Bell Wireless), Canada (WIND Mobile, Mobilicity, Videotron)
Based on the G1 test reports...
... the bands listed in the FCC test reports are not at all definitive.
I pulled the FCC exhibits for the G1 and they listed:
GSM 850
GSM 1900
WCDMA Band IV
(plus 802.11 etc)
In other words, no Band I.
However, I've been successfully using my G1 on 3G in both Europe and Asia for over a year now, so it actually has Band I.
I suspect the FCC tests only cover the frequencies that the device is going to be used on *in the US*. Frequencies the device may or may not be capable of using outside the US just aren't relevant.
That being said, the more significant detail is that the T-mobile site lists the G2 as only having Band IV, even though it lists the Vibrant as having Bands I and IV. Looking at other phones, it seems that T-mobile isn't terribly consistent in how they list their frequencies, but that's a (relatively) slim thread to hang onto.

It is quad-band -- for GSM -- as all (most?) modern non-CDMA phones (and some of those) are. But the OP question is about 3G.

Good sleuthing. I didn't consider this possibility.

I wouldn't put it past T-mo to have just messed up the detail.
I suppose the easiest way to determine would be for someone with an unlocked G2 (or even a locked unit) to take it to Europe or Asia and see if the system status shows UMTS signal or not.
Unlocked G2 Australian user
Hey Guys,
I actually received my G2 a few days ago. Yesterday i purchased an unlock code and entered this in to the phone which it advised was accepted.
The device then rebooted, however once the system loaded i noticed my signal bar had an "x" through it.
Browsed to Network Operators and tried selecting to search for networks and also to select automatically. Both of these selections returned an error "error searching for network" or every second try it would say "unable to connect to network".
I tried a factory reset of my phone but still the same issue.
I tried dialing *#*#4636#*#* which opens a testing screen. I noticed on this screen i can see i have a signal of -85 dBm which is similar to on my galaxy s.
Tried playing with the settings on this screen, i had the option to select network band to which i alternated between all options including auto and AUS, AUS2.
I can confirm this is a Vodafone simcard and it works perfectly in other phones.
I tried a Telstra, 3 and a friends Vodafone simacard all of which produced the same error.
I noticed there are several Australian sites selling unlocked Tmobile G2's.
At this point i would like to try flashing the stock rom on again however i am not sure on the button combo to access the recovery screen.
Last thing to note is yes i have spoke with Vodafone, HTC AU and HTC US, none of the techs were able to help me. =(

Would a G2 work on Softbank (Japanese Carrier) They use the 2100 band IV I believe. I know my T-Mobile Nexus One worked fine on there 3G.
I could care less if the HSPA+ worked just 3G would be fine.

Band IV is commonly referred to as AWS 1700. From the gsmworld entry, it looks like Softbank is running on Band I ("UMTS 2100"). The G1 and Nexus One both had UMTS 900 & UMTS 2100 (the global bands) in addition to T-Mo specific AWS 1700. We're trying to determine if the G2 also has 900&2100 radios, but right now it's not looking very good.
I am planning to buy MT4G, unlock it and use it on another carrier with compatible frequencies of course. Will I be still able to get updates using for example a wifi connection? or should I download updates manually? Is there something that I will lose when I use the phone on another carrier ?
I don't know if you mean overseas or in any place other than the U.S. but the only "compatible" carrier for this phone besides T-Mobile is AT&T. The reason why compatible is in quotes is because yes the phone would function and make calls on that network, but you will lose 3G and HSPA+ service as AT&T's equivalents operate on a different and incompatible spectrum.
I would also assume that you would not receive OTA updates either.

I don't know for absolute certain, but I'm 95% sure you wouldn't recieve OTA since it goes out over the network your phone is connected to.
You can usually snag the update from here, but unfortunately, a lot of people didn't run aLogcat to log the download and get the link. Including myself, though I'm trying now with my second device.

Another question, does anyone know if this device works on UMTS band I 2100 ( 2100/1900)? I really can't make up my mind because it's not clear on T mobile website. It says UMTS 1700/2100/AWS and this looks like it's referring only to UMTS IV

The phone is compatible with almost every gsm band the specs are:
GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
HSDPA/HSUPA 900 / 1700 / 2100
In the US most carriers are using GSM 850/1900 and 3G 1700/2100 you will only get OTA from T-mobile in the US if you are using their cellphone service or you can hope and wait for the update to show up here on XDA in the forum.
http://www.worldtimezone.com/gsm.html
In Israel where I am, and England, France and Germany etc. the bands are
2G 900/1800 and 3G 2100
so you should have no problem using 3G or even 3g+ "4G" on this phone if your cell provider offers it. But it may require an advanced sim card or signing up for a special data service.
Dont get confused by the various terms (UMTS EDGE HSPA etc.) a phone that is guad-gsm and tri-3G will run the data services just fine but T-mobile will tell you we dont guarantee the data capabilities outside of our network... because they dont want lawsuits

Actually I am a telecom engineer so I know about the terms. You didn't get my question about the bands. Look here for example support.t-mobile.com/doc/tm24233.xml?&A2L.SERVICE=FeatureSummary
The listed Bands: 1 (2100) and 4 (AWS 1700/2100)
and that clearly shows that G2 supports 2 UMTS bands , 1 and 4
1 is 2100 paired with 1900 ( EU)
4 that is used by T mobile in the US.
So I am confused because on this page mytouch.t-mobile.com/mytouch-4g-features#/specs-and-manualsthey listed the bands like this
Bands 1700/2100/AWS that's why it's not clear for me if MT4G supports UMTS I or not.
This is the official reply from HTC when asked:
Dear ....,
I understand that you would like to know if your T-mobile Mytouch 4G device can use the 2100 MHZ band over in Europe for 3G. I do apologize your device is not compatible with the 2100 MHZ back over in Europe for 3G service. I do apologize for all the inconvenience that this may cause you.

AWS is the data delivery method used only by Tmo in the US. So the 4G service may not work outside the US but according to the phone specs it states that it supports UMTS and GPRS/EDGE so it should support 3G UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ and gprs/edge for 2G everywhere. Ill test my HD (from England) when I get to new york in a day or so and see if I can get proper 3G speeds.
Todays smartphones are designed to be used worldwide with full service as much as possible.
AWS is just another name of UMTS band IV. This is the only UMTS band the MT4G supports, so you'll be able to use it for 3G on carriers that use this band. You can see the list of bands and operators that use them here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
In short, outside of the US, Canada, and Chile you're out of luck for 3G. You'd be able to use 2G fine though.

Frequency bands differ for different technologies on the same phone. For example there are 2 versions of Nexus one one for ATT and one for T mobile although they work on GSM level because the support both GSM bands on T mobile and ATT but not the UMTS bands on both networks. UMTS and GSM frequencies are not necessarily the same for each network and most probably they won't be the same. In my country we licensed 3G services ( UMTS) on 2100 band or UMTS 1 . GSM on 900 and 1800 only.
Can someone provide me with the FCC id from the back of the phone ?
I tired to search for it on the web but I don't think what I found was the correct one.
Update
I went to T-mobile store today, the guy was helpful and he printed out the official full technical specifications for the device that he pulled out and here what I got:
3G/UMTS Bands
Band I / UMTS2100 Yes
Band II / 1900 No
Band IV 1700/2100/AWS Yes
Band V/850 No
Band VII/ 900 No
The page was titled " Enablers" and listed specs for GSM and UMTS bands with their features. So I think this ends it for me, it does support both bands I and IV.

Just curious if anyone is using the MT4G on AT&T and how well that's working? I know we can unlock it for use with any carrier but wanted some feedback before I spend the money to get my gf (now using iphone 3gs) an MT4G to use on AT&T.
I already know that 4G won't work. I got her a Captivate for Christmas but she really likes Sense and AT&T's phones are so locked down it's stupid. Can't use custom ringtones, can't sideload apps, etc.
Can anyone help out?
So I'm doing some research and it looks like there's minial wcdma overlap which means spotty 3g coverage? Is that right? I really don't know how to interpret what I'm seeing though so I would be really appreciative for the input of someone more informed than I.

3G won't work either. My question is why on earth would you want to take a MT4G over to the [IMO] worst network of all time?
Only bands 1& 4 right?
Although the captivate supports 2100, at&t only operates 850 & 1900 in the us. Some phones have 2100 for global roaming because that's what most others use.
While at&t does have a larger footprint, I just paid them $180 to get out of my contract and I'm much happier with tmobile. Texts actually send and web pages actually load.

It works just fine, just slower, obviously.
And yes, it is 3G.
Let me be super clear about this... 3G WILL NOT WORK on AT&T. The MT4G just doesn't have the right radio. However, the Vibrant (surprisingly) does have the 850 band on its 3G radio, and does sort of work for AT&T.
If you want an Android phone on AT&T, I recommend buying something unlocked from Canada. Rogers and Bell both share AT&T's 3G bands (850 & 1900), and have a better selection than AT&T itself.
Really great comments here. She's got a year left on her contract, that's why. She's gonna find out her termination fee tomorrow cuz she loves my mt4g, lol.
I always knew that an N1 is definitely her best bet but can't find one used and have an mt4g in the works for $260.
We're talking slightly different things here as well. HSPDA on ATT won't work.
However, "EDGE" describes a family of service classes, not a single speed. Depending on your location and the service speeds there, EDGE may in fact be qualified to be called 3G according to the ITU (the international body that certifies this nomenclature).
As the radio in this phone most certainly does support EDGE, whether or not you can get 3G speeds on AT&T will depend on your location. For most of us this will still be a "no," but if the OP is in one of the special markets (LA, NYC, ATL) you can see it. Since OP is in Oakland, I figured he might get lucky.
I swap cards a bit on mine (one SIMM or work, and one for personal use) and have been in areas where the EDGE network was nearly as fast as the supposed 4G on the other card.
I should probably start using the that bandwith meter app and record my results. It could be interesting.

EDGE is not generally considered a 3G technology, although it is a significant improvement over GPRS, and it offers speeds approaching true 3G speeds.
Calling EDGE "3G" is somewhat like T-Mobile calling HSPA+ "4G"; it's playing a little fast and loose with the definitions. I do agree that in ideal circumstances, EDGE speeds can be pretty good, but it really falters when it comes to streaming media or any other data-intensive task.
