Does anyone know how to perform a soft reset on the X10 without losing any data and not having to take out the battery? Thanks in advance.
What exactly are you trying to do? I'm not sure I follow. Is it something that just turning the phone off then on again would solve? To me that would be a "soft reset".
I did soft resset, but you will loose data. You dont need to open the battery though. Sync you contacts with google and save your txt and other docs at your SD then soft reset.
not sure if you can soft reset this phone. it has a factory reset but you will lose your data, all data on the phone.
i sync through sony ericsson and just synced again to get my contacts back.
These reset phrases are used rather incorrectly and confusing I've noticed. To my understanding, these are what they mean:
Soft Reset: Restarting from a function within the operating system, ie. clicking on a Reset icon or using the power button to invoke the shutdown command.
Hard Reset: Forcefully restarting the phone by removing the battery, putting in back in, and switching the phone on again. eg. the phone froze and can't Soft Reset it.
Factory Reset: Just what it says, resetting the phone, losing all data to revert back to factory conditions. Don't even need to take the battery out then in again.
So I don't get what the OP is trying to do.... unless OP wants to Factory Reset it without losing data? Which is not possible. And what's with removing the battery? What does that do you good?
From what I understand, Hard Reset IS a factory reset. Soft reset is when you restart within the OS. Turning it off and turning it back on is basically soft reset.

Sorry guys, I am coming from a Windows Mobile phone and I had to soft reset the phone few times a day to make it run faster. I was thinking if the X10 gets sluggish, I need to do the same but it doesn't sound like I do?
When you said without losing data and taking the battery out kinda confused us as to why would you lose data or needing to take the battery out just to Soft Reset it.
I was an X1 user, so Windows Mobile... so I know what you mean... needing to restart the phone when it's starting o slow down. So far my experience with X10, it's not like that. The longest I have been without restarting the X10 was 3.5 days, not because it's started to get sluggish, becuase it ran out of juice!
So far, I've never noticed any sluggishness if you don't restart the X10, bless the Android! Apart from the weird battery drain behaviour, I love my X10!
Immediately after restarting the phone, Task Manager says that the available memory is around 107 MB. (That is after killing all the unnecessary apps that are started at startup.)
After half a day, same apps running, I only have 77 MB.
After a couple of days without restart, I have seen numbers around 50 MB.
I haven't tested this thoroughly, but I feel that the phone responds faster after a restart. (Less lag in timescape, phonebook, etc.)
What is this memory leak, and does it seem right that a restart could improve performance?
There is no memory leak.
When you start an app, the app is loaded in memory.
When you exit the app with back button, the app will be kept in memory but in a suspended state (not using the CPU).
Of course, your RAM goes down but this is not a problem because Android is such a smart boy and will keep track of which apps are used often wnd which aren't so, when a new app will need RAM the less used is "unloaded" to make space for the new one.
Using task killers to kill apps and make RAM is bad.
Why?
1. Free memory is wasted memory
2. Starting an app every time is used will just drain more battery.
3. If is already in memory it will just change the state from suspended to running and will be there, running, in a second instead in 3 seconds or what ever is the load time for that app.
It makes you feel better when you see 200Mb free?
Use a task killer, set it to kill all the apps when the screen goes blank and after complain about the phone being laggy and the battery draining too fast.
It's not a memory leak.. it's the way the OS manages the memory.. it will leave stuff in memory in case you need to use it again, therefore being quicker.. using task killers, for example will actually slow the phone down a little, because it will have to load apps back into memory when you want to re-use them.. if it runs out of RAM then it will clear something from memory that isn't being used..

I sometimes kill apps that I won't be using for a long time. I check my e-mails in the morning, then I won't be using wifi for 12 hours, so I don't need the e-mail and browser apps during that period = I kill them. Is that unnecessary? Don't they use any of the battery at all? My first concern is battery capacity.
Also, my (poor?) understanding was that the phone uses some of the free memory when it starts new processes (for example, loading a contact's page). My second concern is to have timescape, contact management, etc running more smoothly.
At the moment, I only have ~30 MB available memory. My phone now uses ~3 seconds to start new apps. (No, not the ones I closed earlier today. ) 6 seconds for timescape (which was already running). Is that because it takes time to free up memory in order to run the new stuff?
When I shut down most of the apps (~100 MB free memory), it only takes 1-2 seconds to start new apps, including timescape (which was still running - not killed).
BTW, there seems to be a limit around 30 MB - even though I keep starting new apps, it does not drop below 30.
Final q... Does the phone store other stuff than apps in the memory? Perhaps hidden system processes? Running exactly the same list of apps (looking at task manager), I get very different amounts of free memory.

I've had my Galaxy Tab (Verizon edition) now for under a week. Naturally, that means I've been installing apps on it every day.
Last night an issue cropped up that turns out to be a deeper problem than I thought.
To start, I'd randomly see a force close for the built-in Google Maps app. Force closes aren't necessarily unusual, but this was force closing every 10 seconds or so. And it wasn't running. No sign of it in any of the task manager or application manager or running services areas. Yet, it was crashing.
(Don't worry, the fun doesn't end there.)
So, I suspected the last couple of apps I installed and uninstalled them (more on this later). The problem didn't go away. Around this time, other apps started crashing randomly -- often without a force close (much more like how iOS apps crash -- a return to the home screen).
The crashing always coincides with a single short vibrate then a triple-vibrate about 5 seconds later when the app closes or the force close dialog comes up. This happens in nearly any app -- from the home screen (less common) to the Browser, maps, settings, gmail, 3rd party apps, etc.
But wait, there's more...
I wasn't observant enough the first time to notice that the suspected apps were never uninstalled. Now no app will actually install. When I perform the uninstall, everything seems fine. Until I reboot. Then the app is back, fully functional.
None of the apps are installed to the SD card. The device is not rooted. The device claims just over a gigabyte of internal memory free, and slightly under half the SD card free.
Anyone see any of this behavior? I'm hoping to avoid doing a factory reset -- while also unsure that it would even do anything if something else is wrong. And the two issues (crashing and uninstalls-not-sticky) aren't necessarily related.
This isn't my first Android device, either... I haven't seen this or anything like it on the G1, N1, Droid, Evo, Archos, or any other device, for that matter.
Thoughts? Ideas? Musings? Questions?
[Update: Device was replaced. If it wasn't a hardware problem, it was still good enough to prompt the retailer to replace it. They easily accepted, "The factory reset doesn't work." as a reason.)
Sounds to me like there is something wrong with the internal memory chip. I would return the device within the DOA warranty if I were you.
Seems that it probably is a hardware issue.
I tried a factory reset (which appears to be a very convenient way to boot in to recovery mode, BTW) and it was only able to delete a portion of data. All of the apps are still there, all the data, etc. (The SD card aside, the factory wipe doesn't touch that.)
So, back it goes for exchange!
I just started having the same problem today and I have not installed any new apps although I did update date my existing apps a few days ago. My phone is rooted but by your discription that's not the cause.
I did reset my phone and I formated my SD memory. I also use a code that I found to reset the phone to factory and reset everything. Non of this has solved the problem.
I'm still trying and I'll let you know it I have any positive results.

My Vzw G2 home key lags, I press it, and sometimes it stays pressed, then it goes to my home screen, when I try to open recent apps, I almost have to hold it down for 5 seconds for the window to appear. I woke up this morning, checked my storage and it said 455mb free (originally I had 19gb free) then I cleared cache, the cache said something like 19gb+. Got my storage back, but I just checked again a while ago and my cache was at 2.5gb.
I'm fairly new to rooting and such, but anyways, last night, my phone was absolutely fine, but my battery seemed to be dieing on its own, so I decided to "recalibrate" it by killing it completely and fully charging it, so I killed the phone, and put it to charge when I went to bed, woke up 5 hours later, and it was at 66% shut it off, started charging it, went back to sleep, woke up in 2 hours and was at 98%, then I waited for a bit for it to reach 100%, that fixed the problem, it charges normally now and dies as fast as it used to. So I unlocked the phone, and started using it, and I notice my home key is extremely laggy, I press it, it stays pressed, then goes to the home screen 3-5 seconds later, it does it frequently, the pressing animation for it seem to lose frame rate too, all other nav bar keys are fine. Then I check my storage, and It says 455mb availible, I originally had 19gb the day before, my cache was at 19gb+ so I cleared it, and then 7 hours later, the cache is at 2.5gigs again. So I cleared it just 20 minutes ago, and its at 610mb now. Does anyone know what's going on? Please help me, these problems literally came overnight, the day before I hadn't installed any tweaks besides xstana to mod my nav bar, which didn't cause any kind of lag for the 8-9 hours I used it. Another thing it was doing this morning was that it does is that it keeps underclocking itself to 1.9 or 1.7ghz, why does it keep doing that? Does anyone have any idea on what to do? What would you do? PLEASE HELP I've been trouble shooting this all day and haven't been able to find a similar thread.
How many backups did you make? The nav mod is probably causing your lag.

Backups of what? Doesn't really matter though I haven't made any back ups of anything.
Also I removed the nav bar mod several times, it still lags.

So I gave up and just reset my phone. I just finished setting up the entire phone again with all the mods/tweaks I had before, and everything works now, cache doesn't seem to fill up on it's own anymore, battery life is still normal, home keys are responsive again, BUT it still keeps underlocking itself to 1.9 or 1.7ghz, anyone have any idea what's going on? I had a fix for it earlier with an app that would set my cpu freq one every boot up but that doesn't seem to work anymore. I think I'm gunna leave this thread up because I haven't seen any other threads on cache filling, and home key unresponsiveness.
Edit: I take that back, the cache data is still filling my storage, I just cleared 10gb of cache data. Can someone PLEASE tell me why this happens? Or if there is some way to set a limit to cache data?

It's also possible that will the latest android update, something unexpected happened with your phone

Let's try this..... can you get it to turn off, perhaps by taking out battery? Wait a minute (or a few if you want to be safer) and then immediately upon Power up, go into safe mode by hitting home + volume up + power at the same time, holding for maybe 10 seconds
That may throw it out of the loop and into actually recovering itself

If you place the card into a computer (presumably with an adapter, if it's microsd), you run possible risk of infection. I would run a virus scan on the card itself, but outside the phone
If you can save the pictures, that's ideal. In the future, consider google backups to the cloud or amazon prime photos
Well, I tok out the card. Then I did a factory reset.... it gave me a FEW of the annoying "this has stopped" or that has stopped, but I don't remember what, now.... It started installing stuff, but some programs it refused to. Clean Master, Pokemon Go.. it gave me error code -504. Then I forced some and it seemed like they were working ok and installing, so I figured maybe I was just DLing too much all at once. So I went back and put in my mem card in, and it froze. rebooted, and **** went to pot again.
I had Google Drive, but it kept filling up my phone's hard drive and prevented me from doing stuff, DLing more.. I had to clear all the data.

Yeah. It does three boot screens. 1, the Galaxy Grand Prime screen. Then the Pretty Samsung one with the musical tone. Then the Tracfone screen, then it boots. Since these problems started, it will often freeze on the Tracfone one.. cause after a few seconds the screen will dim. And then it boots.. but like, before I took my husband to work.. it was still froze there. I had to pull the battery, cause it wouldn't move. Though, just now it did finally
If it is incapable of factory reset, it's the kernel. That really would have to be handled by the dealer who sold the phone (if under warranty and they feel like replacing it) or doing things that void the warranty anyway

If settings are failing to load during language selection and you can't get to the home screen, you can try takin out battery for 10 minutes and then try rebooting and trying again
If it still fails to work after 24 hours (sometimes if you leave it alone long enough it'll work) I'd go to where you bought it with proof of purchase and hope they'll help get a new one
Ok, battery removed. Is it possible it's an overheat issue? Cause when we were playing Pokemo Go Friday night, my phone froze.. and when I booted it the screen went black, and lines went through it, like it lost connection to the MB or something

On an unofficial capacity, I think your phone may have been google account locked. This commonly happens when you forget to remove your google account before factory resetting the phone. You will know if your phone is google account locked by holding Volume up button + Power Button + Home Key, then when you get blue screen press volume up button, If the FAP lock: ON, then your account is google locked (Google locked phones tend to not allow you to go past the setup screen as you cannot click the "next" button). You can send it in to your phone dealer for them to send back to Samsung for repairs, however you seem to live in the U.S so I don't know their policies. I live in Canada and work as a part-time Samsung repair technician and our policy is to unlock the google lock and factory reset then return to phone company. However, that is not covered under warranty so we do it as a sort of "customer service" capacity.

It is FRP, not FAP, it means Factory Reset Protection.
Well, if that is the case, on the setup you will get a window telling you to choose the WI-FI you want to connect to. Do it, then try to log in with your gmail account (This "gmail" account must be the same one you used last time otherwise it will not work.
I've had this Nokia 6.1 Plus since release and its getting more and more annoying, so reaching out in the hope that theres a fix.
What seems to happen is after a while, Chrome will start freezing up when browsing. The page will lock up and it wont respond to any inputs, then after 5, 10, 15 seconds it will wake up and come back to life. Then a few seconds later an OS level popup appears saying Chrome isnt responding and do i want to end task or wait.
It seems to start doing it more and more often and eventually it becomes almost unusable.
The fix at that point is to open the app settings, goto storage and hit clear cache. Cache incidentally is always just shy of 1GB. Then things get even weirder. Hitting clear cache basically causes the phone to lock up completely. It takes about 20mins in this frozen state and it will eventually reboot, and once its rebooted the cache for chrome shows up as empty, and everything works nicely again. If you try to use the phone while its "stuck" it sometimes reboots earlier, but then you find the cache isnt empty and you need to repeat the process. I've found just clicking clear cache and then leaving it alone the best way to fix it.
It feels almost as though its a storage issue. It "feels" like an old PC with a dodgy hard drive. At a guess i would say the cache probably has a 1GB limit, and the hanging is caused by the browser clearing some of the old cached items to make way for new ones, but for whatever reason that IO is taking a long time to complete.
Any ideas? I bought this phone as a bit of a compromise, the specs look decent on paper, it has a decent sized screen that fills the whole body (and i dont mind the notch) and it runs Android One, all of which were features i really wanted. However it doesnt support the correct 4G bands for my area (Vodafone UK) and doesnt have NFC, which is really quite annoying as i found android pay becoming more and more useful. Along with these freezeups its getting to the point i am going to start looking for something else.

I haven't experienced any such issues myself, but in this recent reddit thread one of the commenters seems to think that there may be an issue with app caching on the latest update.

Certainly been happening for a lot longer with mine, at least 6 months.
Well, I'm sure you've heard this already, but have you tried a factory reset? I can't really think of anything else to try other than that or completely reflashing the stock rom.
