I've been trying to read about the new web2go service, and I'm completely confused. This thread called "New Tzones Hack" just added to the confusion.
I've been using the t-zones $5.99 for years, with minimal problems. (The exception is after I've been plugged into a PC on the internal network at Microsoft. That always blows away the t-zones setup, and I have to run tmobyjoe599.cab to recover.)
I should add that I'm using a HTC Polaris, have Google set as my homepage, and I've never used a Tmo homepage, so maybe I don't understand that relationship.
So what is the role of epc.tmobile.com? It's referred to as an APN. Is this another name for proxy or not? Some instructions telly you to replace wap.voicestream.com with epc.tmobile.com, but then tell you not to use the proxy!
Does web2go require the proxy, or not? If it does, why would things like Skyfire work, since they won't use proxies. If it does use a proxy, will I have to manuall repair all my settings after a connection at MS, or is there a web2go equivalent to tmobyjoe599.cab?
Do you have to get Tmo to change your records to allow faster speeds with web2go? Do you have to pay the higher rate?
Given that there are on 7 posts that come up here searching on web2go, is there a better information source?
Bump. Still looking for an answer.
i'm under the impression that web2go and the old tzones are the same thing, save for pricing and data allowance, of which tzones wins on both accounts.
i don't know that cab file, but personally, the epc settings are easier since it doesn't require proxy settings and offers more ports. on my tilt or touch pro, epc is a fantastic "upgrade" from the wap apn.
speeds are the same, as there is no speed ontrol on tmobile' end. you get what your phone and service area provide you, being edge speeds probably

Thanks for the answer, but you keep saying "i'm under the impression:, "probably", and "i don't know." I'm looking for some definitive information. Isn't there someone out there who knows these answers, or knows where they can be found?
fine...want definitive?
web2go and tzones are the same thing, except tzones is unlimited and cheaper. if you got tzones, good for you. web2go offers nothing more, just less data at a higher price with included messages.
epc and wap.xxx are apns, not proxies. the proxy is that 216.155.165.50 stuff that you enter. if you use wap.voicestream.com, you need the numbers. if you use epc, you don't use the numbers. its pretty clear, as others on the forum have said.
you get edge speeds, no way around it. you will not get 3g, regardless of what you do or how much you pay so long as a polaris is in your hands. htc's only phone for tmobile 3g is the G1, also definitive and simple.
and i don't know what that little cab file does
supposedly a member and 2 t-mo reps would also account the htc universal for 3g (in their 2100mhz areas only)
i have tzones and get 3g with my samsung gravity2
i am grandfathered in to the $4.99 tzones plan and can pull up websites that i previously couldn't with tzones, so i guess i am getting full benefit of web2go for the lower price. tech support says that web2go has unlimited access to the web and that tzones is limited, but i wonder if they are instructed to say that in hopes of selling the more expensive plan. unlimited web browsing also depends on your phone. older phones are not equipped to handle web pages with more content. when they say you have full access to the internet, you do, as long as your phone can support the content. even with web2go, certain web pages won't display if your phone is not capable of supporting the content. i just got the gravity2 which works well for web browsing, and supports 3g, so i get that as well. the thing with 3g is that it is only available in certain metropolitan areas. the 3g network will expand as time goes on but for now it is limited. when i am in a 3g area i get 3g and it is displayed on my phone and when i am not in a 3g area, i get edge.
im sorry but this only edge speeds is bull. When I got a mytouch 3g i had web2go and had 3G service and speeds. The only problem was after 2 days they blocked my data plan completely and instead demanded I upgraded to the mytouch 3g data plan. I couldnt even get edge. but im 100% sure if you have a non android phone that has 3g you could get 3g using web2go.
Im getting 3g speeds with my TP2 using my old tzones account (epc).
lol the post saying 3g only was posted back in 08 when t-mobile's only 3g phone was the g1
bravo is right! if you use wap.voicestream.com, you will be needing the numbers but if you use epc, you wont be needing those.

I am trying to configure my wizard (8125 lokiwiz unlocked) to work on my tmobile data plan.I don't have the unlimited internet and hotspot plan for tmobile, i have the unlimited WAP plan. I just can't figure out how to get it to work, the tmobile tech people didnt sound experienced with the wizard but they said its possible. Do any of you know teh correct settings and how to enter them. I was able to work it out on WM2003 but WM5 is really confusing. Perhaps someone with an MDA and the similar plan could let me know what theirs is configured for.

I saw the issue of tmobile's WAP discussed I believe on howardforums.com . At least from what I remembered from the discussion was that tmobile was to be fading out its WAP service which also had unintended consequences for people using tmobile's blackberry sevices. I did however download the tmobile cab files from club-imate which placed a wap configuration for tmobile in My Work Network configurations setup. Good luck.
Bro, its simple, go to settings, connections, connections, then add a new modem connection, Then put in where it says "enter a name for the connection" T-Mobile GPRS Wap" or what ever your want. Then below select GPRS where it says select a modem. click on next after that and enter in wap.voicestream.com then click on next and then finish. You do not need to put anything else in. Thats it your are done. I have five PPC from the XDA on up and no problems on any.
Cheers,
Mike
thanks mike, hmm now the phone just says locating... if i try to load a wap site like wap.yahoo.com for instance. I am connected to the GPRS connection, its just not loading up sites.
hey eb, was that cab from an original tmobile rom, or was it part of the euro tmobile roms that was just released. I have been looking for a copy of the tmobile rom from back in nov.

The tmobile cab I got from clubimate is for the US, and as far as I can tell it is not the euro tmobile settings. I also tried the wap connect and got dumped into my GPRS connection to. The steps Mike described is how it looks in my network connections. I remember back when tmobile was voicestream and using my laptop via cellphone to connect, one had to start at voicestream's wap home page. Just a suggestion.
try a differnt AP like internet2.voicestream.com
some people have had success using that....I myself discourge this, however, it works it works...
internet2.voicestream.com or internet3.voicestream.com will only work if you have a tmobile unlimited internet account which is 19.99 a month not a wap account. What services are on your account?
mike you're right....i thought he had the 19.99 unlim internet plan...i think he needs a t-mo proxy for it to work....i'll google this and post back later...
okay here's what i found....i think the proxy thing is the what might be relevant..
http://www.mobilegadgetnews.com/lofiversion/index.php?t9404.html
That is correct, for the wap, and mms the proxy has to be put in. I am soooo lazy. I reflash my Universal so much, I got tired of putting the mms setting back in. LOL
Mike
hmm so after messing around with more settings, still nothing works. Perhaps its because im trying to connect to restricted WAP sites. anyone know the tzones website/homepage? Or perhaps someone that actually has the correct settings for $9.99 tzones on a WIzard can help me with the settings.
Just put out 19.99 and you will have full access!

I was told they no longer had the 19.99 plan, that it is only the 29.99 plan. What's the trick to still getting the 19.99 plan?
Dawm that includes hotspots now. I was paying 19.99 for gprs and 19.99 for hotspot service. Heh. I guess they don't have 19.99 gprs internet only now. Sucks. But thanks, I am going to call and save 10.00 a month. hehe
Mike
They are getting rid of the back door to using the WAP as online access for the PDA's. They are going to go to the full data. You will have to have the 29.99 Total Internet Plan which is unlimited data and email and hotspot. There were a lot of people paying the lower amounts and trying to use it on the PDA and it was causing issues and the data group had to try and solve them and there were things that just couldn't be solved becuase the provisiong of the WAP is different then the internet2.voicestream.com. Just pay the 30 bucks and get it all.
Hey, i am about to purchase a Xperia X1. I am on T-mobile USA
Do i need to get the 20.00 Unlimited data ? or do i get the 5.99 Unlimited T-zones because the phone is only EDGE?
Thanks guys, great community
As far as I know, the 5.99 tzone deal is no longer available. however, the code can be found on howardforums. it pretty much works the same way as long as you have the right settings.
Technically, you're not supposed to know this.
Depending on what you need to do on your phone, you may or may not need the unlimited data plan.
If all you plan to do is use email, then you can tell the techy that you want the $9.99 100mb plan. Just tell him/her that you just want email and don't want to have to pay 24.99 for that.
If you plan on streaming media and such, then you'll need the unlimited data plan which I believe is $24.99
As far as I know t-zones is a service that offers the download of T-Mobile specific content only. It doesn't provide you internet capabilities.
Good luck!
yeah right
Just got X1 and all day try to connect to T-zones, called T-mobile, they said i should get smartphone data plan in order to use internet on this device.
Thats curious, because i had before P1i, P910i, Samsung innov8 they're all smartphones and worked with my t-zones!
BTW, t-zones is not only for special content, i was able to see whatever site, check email, use google maps. I just was not able to watch youtube clips and internet radio etc...
Any ideas?
dont get unlimited data. what you should do is:
register your tmobile account on the web, incase you havnet already
choose your phone as a razr or something
add tzones plan
set up your xperia
and voila.
theres no point in getting unlimited data, as tmobile doesnt support xperia's 3g ( i hate tmobil )
tzones has been working for me since the wizard.
same for me just get the tzones enabled on your account then go into the connection settings and change it from wap.voicestream.com to epc.tmobile.com and your good to go!
You all are lucky!
I have to purchase the Blackberry plan. But at least I have unlimited everything......but for $40 a month I had better have unlimited everything.
I'm on the 5.99 T-Zones and I have everything working. Email. web its all there. No restrictions. I'm also able to stream videos off my computer via Orb without a problem. I wish I would have gotten it when it was 2.99
Thanks guys! Everything is working with epc.tmobile.com!!!!
I didnt see this APN before, is it somewhere on t-mobile site???
I was almost going to get that unlimited or try 9.99 plan :-E
Guys I need help with tzone settings.
I have HTC Touch Pro and have 9.99 web2go plan.
It was working fine but since last 2 weeks I am not able to use 9.99 data plan.
In order for data plan to work on my HTC Touch Pro I had installed tmobyjoe599 cab
Any help is appreciated.
i just found out that t-mobile has a new 9.99 data plan for the internet...i was thinkin about getting this rather than the 24.99 plan for the t-mobile wing internet...does anybody know te proxy settings that would allow me to use the 9.99 plan on my wing to use internet explorer?
and if not can someone tell me the proxy settings for the 5.99 t-zones plan?
thank u
The $9.99 plan isn't for smartphones. I went to tmobile.com and selected a standard phone with a basic plan (just to see available services) and then switched the phone at check out and selected a Dash... The $9.99 plan isn't offered with the Dash. So I suppose you could pop your sim in a standard headset and order the $9.99 plan and switch it out to see if it works. Just to warn you, even if it does work, it's only 50mb. Tmo says it's for casual web browsing. You could burn through that pretty quickly if you use your phone to watch videos or stream podcast.
that will not work. i had the 9.99 plan for my motorola and switched to wing and had to upgrade to 24.99. its not the same kind of data plan.
oh okay i was jus wondering
I met an ex Tmo employee that said in some states those proxy hacks work, but where I am in Michigan they won't. Why the hell that is... I don't know? I was never able to get the $4.99 proxy hack working when I got my wing.

do you just change the apn?
Service Access Point Name (APN)
T-MobileWeb wap.voicestream.com
T-Mobile Internet internet2.voicestream.com
*NEW* T-Mobile Internet epc.tmobile.com
T-Mobile Internet with VPN

I dont have the data plan anymore. I believe it just said unable to connect. I dont even use the wing anymore. I jailbroke and unlocked an iphone (I know, I know... traitor)
well it no longer works for me crap.
edit it work on another phone that i have though
how much data can you use before they get mad at you?
tzones hack
well there are some steps missing i have had the 4.99 since the dinosaurs have roomed the earth and i have had no issues. ok heres the hack
apn= wap.myvoicestream.com
proxy 216.155.165.50 port 8080 (or 216.155.165.50:8080)
or if yer brave
apn= epc.tmobile.com
then check "this network connects to the internet"
no proxie. the second one allows for streaming while the other one does not. and the second one is quicker then the first happy hackin ^_^

I have the T-Mobile Total Internet Add-On on my plan, and edge is working fine on my unlocked E61i .. but I've put the SIM in a loaner Touch Pro 2.
Calls work fine, actually I even have the gmail application working fine, as well as active sync with google for contacts and calendar.
Opera and IE both give me Gateway Timeouts.
I have a comm connection set up for Cellular Line (GPRS,3G) to internet2.voicestream.com with all auth info blank.
It looks like it's trying to communicate over EDGE then dies. I've tried setting it up multiple times and rebooting the phone. No dice.
Well, that's strange.. I suppose this phone's Opera and IE have some strange modification..
I loaded SkyFire onto it and it's working fine.. nevermind I suppose..
im trying to get my laptop to connect to AT&T 3g via [email protected] instead of default APN.
Im currently running OSX 10.5.7 and have tried a variety if scripts but nothing seems to be working.
Any ideas?
as I understand it cingular is not the same company as att?
if so then
APN is the identirier for the phone company which one of their services you wish
to take advange of it's not a site or anything
a phone company can even have several APN's depending on what
contract one use
and type anything other in the APN then what the phone company expect you to
for the contract you got
and you will get no service at all
if not then
sorry I dont really know that much about american phone companys
yah thats the problem im running into. I would like to use WAP.Cingular instead of the default ISP.CINGULAR because of the amount of savings on my monthly bill.
Thanks for the input tho.
anyone have any idea if this is going to work, bc my only other windows phone was the dash and i used to use the old school Tzones for $2.99 on that.
On the same boat bro, I am currently paying $15 a month for unlimited data on Sprint and I DONT want a $30 bloated data plan, does Web2Go work on smartphones if you buy retail $450.00 ????
Probably not, T-Mobile does IMEI checks now to see if you're provisioned correctly. While you may use them on other windows Mobile phones, the HD2 is considered a special device and will require the regular data package like Android.

I'll second that answer, but more definitively than 'probably.' Full smartphone data plan required.
Web2Go will work. You have to change the apn in the data settings from epc.tmobile.com to internet2.voicestream.com. I've had several iPhones, Touch Pro 2, and now T-Mobile USA HD2 (got mine last week from Wal-Mart w/no commitment) and I have NEVER had a problem. T-Mobile doesn't perform any provisioning checks or scans that's BS! I've had service since '99 (Powertel=>Voicestream=>T-Mobile)!

Do you have the phone set up as the HD2 on the T-mobile website under your account or as another phone?
That's odd because i use to use my HD with one of the cheap plans (since they didn't have the IMEI numbers for the HD initially). However, after a couple months, I could no longer use the phone unless it had the unlimited smartphone plan (and everyone else reported the same thing on the Blackstone forum). As far as I know, Tmobile does check IMEI and it will detect that HD2 is a smartphone will not let you connect unless you have the proper plan.
Thanks for the heads up k2trill, imma buy an HD2 retail and set up Web2Go. Ill let you guys know how it goes, expect a response in a week.
set it up as "my phone is not listed" option.
I am asuming as much as we read these forums Tmobile will too so there you go - from time to time they will create some sort of firewall (by changing the options and settings) to force us into Web2Go... I want to see how this goes as I will not purchase HD2 to subscribe on additional $30 ripoff... Web2Go I can live with...
