Would like your advice! - XPERIA X1 General

Hi people. Im about to change phone. Right now i am/was so willing to get X1, but it looks like that that i liked so much about my N series phone was the ability to install plenty of apps and games with no problems at all. It looks like this WM OS and phones with it differ at lot from each other and there are plenty of compatibility issues (ex. the WVGA screen limit5s games a LOT) emulators too (even with the hgher cpu they dont roon as smooth as in Symbian) and hell, a lot more things. i also think X1 screen, because of its 16:9 nature, is small for it being a touch screen....
im not sure few days ago saw nokia N97 and thought THAT is my thing, but wont be able to buy it on summer, only during this month, so cant wait...(i dont live in USa nor EU)
I was hoping you could give your advice about this, i like advance devices and OS, i somehow like WM, but never thought of its limits. NO, i dont want Touch HD nor any other only touchscreen phone. I liek keyborad, better if Kwerty. and even though BB's tempt me (all my friends have em) not willing to pay that much for such limited cell-phones.
Thanks in advance

I thought a resolution change will always affect the compatibility on any device regardless it is running on wm or symbian or android...
I just switch from a iphone and loving the x1.... it feels much smoother than my iphone... but maybe thats because I installed a lot of apps on it to slow the iphone down
you will need a little time to adjust for the new phone... but once you get use to it it almost feel like its just another touch screen with a keyboard for sms/email...

uhm.. thanks for answering...
any1 else???

went from n73 to this...must say im not looking back..only problem is the n73 loudspeaker was stronger..but who cares really

which N series did you have? If we are talking S60v3, then you should love WM in this regard. No signing of any kind or hacking the phone for doing more than just scratching the surface. I left Symbian mainly because of that (second reason being UIQ is dead and I refuse to be a betatester for Nokia's first touchscreen phones) and looked to what I thought was the best OS at the moment.

uhm well yeah that whole signin thing sucked... but still gotta admit s60v3 had way more apps and games than WM...
most of good WM good apps are kind of old and run at resolutions that would mean a ridiculously small display in a corner at Xperia's WVGA screen

I switched from a Nokia N95 and I hold it was the right decision.
The N95 was slow, the slider was poorly manufactured, the display resolution was bad. I even disliked the "registering 3rd party programs before installing"-crap.
Also the webbrowser crashed with nearly all the sites I use and the EMail-client did not do as I wanted.
And although all the functions I wanted to use did not work, the battery was gone after one day.
Maybe I just had bad luck, but for me it was my first Nokia and it definitely was my last!
I was very disappointed with the N95 because I thought I'll get a smartphone but I just got an overprized ordinary mobile phone with a quite good camera and a 3.5mm phonejack.
Now, with the X1, I really have a pocketpc. It checks EMails every 10min, I can install all the 3rd party programs I want, the display is fantastic and for the games that don't work with the wvga resolution, I simply use WVGAfix3 (the 2nd version made a lot of problems with my phone).
I now have a scheduler, navigation system, messenger, pocketpc and a phone in one device.
Of course, I encountered a few problems, but I'm confident they will be gone with the first update.

I stopped with symbian at the Nokia 6310i (what an amazing battery life - thing wouldn't die!).
From then the Prophet, Trinity, Kaiser, Raphael and now Xperia.
Anyway, I think the Xperia is the best so far, and windows mobile definately has lots of opportunities (just past early adopter stage). I must admit, I spend a lot of time tweaking, customising etc - but it's nice that you can do that.
Previous phones were a little unstable, but so far Xperia is 100% reliable. Haven't had any problems (reliability wise). Expensive though, so maybe its an idea to go try both in the store first?
A friend of mine had the N95 (I think) and cursed and swore every day because he was reflashing it left right and center.
Besides that, I find WM more compatible with the office things I need (at this point).

just try both device before you buy...
I'm using xperia for a month right now, and I'm satisfied with it, I admit that initial firmware/ROM needs lot of fixes, but I'm sure future ROM will improve xperia x1...

with symbian you can't fix issues yourself, with winmobile you can, and both system have issues on new devices.
Afterall the matter is: do you need a phone that can be used a pda (symbian) or a pda that can be used for make phone calls (winmobile)?

really ? I think I only installed 4 progs on my last s60 device, all the rest seemed tat.
freewarepocketpc are claiming over 6700 titles for Wm, and that's freeware

ok, but many of those 6700 are only minor tweaks, like making this icon bigger, or organization, hundreds of chnage interface things which are not that determining (does that word exist?)
game on WM are mostly boring against Symbian's...(example, WM= 1000 variations of each: Bejeweled, Solitaire, and other blocks/cards games; Symbian has of all genres)
thats what ive noticed on most sites (including warezs) and nice games ive found, already said this, are not exactly very compatible with X1 screen. Yes, there is WVGAFix3 (which, for what ive read, doesnt apply for everything) but still to see half of the screen in black...dunno... :S
anyways, im going al the way with X1 as my first WM device, optimistic.

Ok folks, what´s your reason to stick with this wm?

About to sell mine X1 after four weeks,6500 sek and this device really sucks..
It´s not all about wm itself but the device..
It´s buggy, not very advanced in features and dead slow for a start..
Reception, camera and end user experiance is a joke compared to a rather basic nokia these day..
Like the size and looks though but that´s it..
My nokia e90 is far more advanced then this and that device is 18 months old..
So what is it,please tell me?
GASP....BLASPHEMER **points at Micke401**!!!!
Its all personal opinion really. For me, coming from the LG Viewty its like going into the future. I made the official decision to sacrafice the 5MP camera for a QWERTY keyboard. There are also more 3rd party apps than you could download in a life time!
i understand you somehow, i have the device for 2 days and by now i have nothing but trouble with it.
I already have a hardware defect and alot of software/stability issues with WM.
the screensize and resolution is cool, other than that i dont really see why this has been hyped so much all the time...it does the basic stuff but once you try some third party software all you get is alot of problems.
After all the camera is average, video playback is average, no emulator works right, browsing is average, panels are crap slow, most of the third party software i have tested (TouchFlo3d, Slide2Unlock, Batty) cause freezes and other weird behavior...
well maybe its just my phone but in the last 2 days i rebooted the device (which takes AGES) for about 30-40 times and did 2 hard resets.
Another thing I love about this phone is this forum! All of the problems ive had (not many i must say) Have all been sorted out on here. No other phone ive had has had this much end user dedication!
Isn't that fair if you install beta/ known for not working / software for other hardare (e.g. Touch HD) stuff (TouchFlo3d, Slide2Unlock) on the machine and you complaints about it's stability?
For me, nokia (e.g. N95) is great for it's multimedia capacity (excellent camera and stereo speaker). But even it's built-in GPS software crash the phone so often and it's just a piece of ****. Not to mention that they can't provide any touchsceen device until the up coming 5800
Nokia isnt any better...
its just that on my Ipod touch everything just works...but i know that the iphone/ipod all have the same hardware and OS, so its quite easy to get stability going and Apple is reviewing all apps before release.

That's true. But it also limit and put a big burden on what developers can do "officially". Based on the Apple's SDK, multi-tasking and real-time navigation are not going to happen to 3rd party software and that's suck. And many other killer apps (Skype, Internet sharing) on other platform won't be happen as well. (Well, at least "officially).
WM is no where perfect but it gets most of our jobs done.
The fresh out of the box windows mobile device is a HORRIBLE experience. There's no ifs and or buts. Even the HTC devices with touch-flow are nowhere near the user friendliness of an iphone.
The difference between this and the ultra user-friendly iphone devices is that you can customize it to do whatever you want - which takes a ridiculous amount of patience and research to get to that point.
I can't use the iphone any longer because the e-mail system is horrid and everything is locked. The iphone will destroy the xperia in terms of multimedia capabilities. All depends on what you need in a device.
my experience is exactly the opposite:
i was a bit disappointed because of the slow panels but after installing the "sbp mobile shell" this issue was fixed. i dont use the panels anymore because my personal "usage-profile" fits perfectly with the features of the "spb mobile shell".
additionally i installed following tools to complete the things i need:
- skype
- divxplayer
- gpstoday
- mobipoket
- flash_lite (for flash-sites in opera)
- blackstone keyboard (replaces the popup keyboard)
- blackstone volume control (replacec the volume control)
- total commander (to establish a LAN to my workstation)
- SRS WOW HD for better Sound
- advanced config tool to tweak some options
i have done a few softresets after installing some tools. i have never done a hardreset and my phone works _really_ stable.
the only issue i had was with google maps and gps because of a missconfiguration of my connection settings (my fault).
so far the x1 is the best smartphone i ever had (after nokias and older se-smartphones).
also: this forum helps alot !
- quadword
dunno man... i've had the x1 for a few days and i swear i've had the thing get stuck on me at least 10 times a day.. pressed the reset button under the battery cover god knows how many times.. i dont blame se for this its just windows mobile thats messed up imho.. i've moved back to the iphone for my primary phone i just use the x1 for typing while im driving..

I disagree, ive had winmmo devices (with or without phone capabilities) since windows ce first came out, and ive always found its to be a worthwile o/s. Granted the Iphone interface is amazing especially with its dual touch capability. But i wouldnt (IMO) say the winmo experiance is horrible
I'll take WinMo over multitouch any day.
WinMo gives me all the basic things i need BUT it can actually handle real games like Warcraft 2, Age of Empires, Syberia and so on (sure they're old, but they're my favorite) compared to the acclerometer arcade games of the iPhone...
Windows Mobile is meant for configurability, the sweetness of doing anything you like with your device and tons of 3rd party programs(probably the most than any other mobile platform).
Saying that X1 is crap, is like saying HTC Diamon, Touch Pro and Touch HD are crap too. This is quite silly of course because they have almost the same hardware and OS, and those HTC devices (at least the 2) have done a great job for many users.
X1 is good for its big screen (resolution), hardware keyboard and the standard connectors (audio and USB jack which current HTC devices lack), the rest of the features are already present on other mobile devices, nothing really new.
Summing it up, comparing the iPhone OS and Windows Mobile is like OSX vs Windows. Some users like the shiny clean interface, while others like to get the job done and be able to control their hardware with tons of programs. Some people don't like to mess with the device but others are dying to do so.
I vote xperia!
My first winmo device was a cassiopia. And I've had just about everythin in between. I won a gen1 iPhone in some dev conference and played with it for awhile before giving it to my brother in law. It was horrible to type on and locked up frequently without any additional software. IMHO it's a toy.
The panels are software. They're not quite right yet but I don't find them to be slow on my device. (Without any other large running applications in the background).
If I don't use the panels at all, I can load TF3D and Blackstone cabs and device works very well. Of course if you even hit the panel button it will crash, but if you don't it works fine.
There are some software issues to be worked out but when hasn't that happened with the first production rom on a WM phone?
Except for the annoying bluetooth turning off and the email signature (patchable) issue I think this is the best device I've had. Far better that the TYTNII. (IMHO)
This site is also a major reason...
well thank you for all the input in this matter.. guess it's all about taste and what to expect from a high end device like this.
I am very unhappy with this one going back to my E90 but thats me,more feautures better camera and even flash right out the box suites me fine.
No struggle no hassle just simple and plain usage and everything works..
Any bid is a good bit when i comes to this crap so if in sweden feel free to make an offer..

I enjoyed my E90 (before I had my iPhone 2G which I am now tired of hence my silver X1). The E90's camera is better? I haven't really used the X1 camera yet. Would love to see some comparison shots X1 vs E90.
Okay, another X1 owner here.
I've had the device for 2 days now and what can I say:
THE BAD
- it is slow
- WLAN sucks, the range is very very very very weak.
- No Cisco VPN, only IPSEC+LT2P and PPTP, but a lot of companies use IPSEC+something else from Cisco, which doesn't work on the X1. On the iPhone it does.
- Generally limited connection options to WLAN, I still can't connect to our campus network, but all the iPhone people have no problem.
- panels are crap, the placeholders aren't even updated, they're all in English although I have German (the panel itself is then German)
- Basic WM concepts: for example: Error boxes have a close button (tiny), but can be dragged around (whole box). Why, I ask, why? Who would want to move an error box, instead of closing it???
- Recessed screen.
- Small icons on the top.
- Media player sucks, no gapless playback, no EQ, etc.
THE GOOD
- Amazing touchscreen. Very very precise, and I can do everything with my finger.
- Amazing speed on WM core applications (file manager etc)
- WM basic PDA capabilities: Tasks/Calendar/Mail all work very well.
- SPB Mobile Shell
- Keyboard is usable I think.
- Camera is good, but a tad slow.
- Active sync is okay.
- Office Mobile!!
- PDF Viewer <--- very good
- Sound quality over headphones is good, radio is very fast.
SUMMARY
Panels and WLAN suck. Everything else is okay or good. The X1 is an okay purchase, but waaaay too expensive in comparison with an iPhone.
RECOMMENDATION
- DON'T get it for your girlfriend/wife/grandma. It's utterly complicated to find out how something works, everything is not intuitive.
- GET it if you want to spend A LOT of money on a device which is worse than for example an iPhone in most areas, but has a few missing features you really need (for me it's tasks, screen res and video)
please stop, stop complaining about a thing that you have purchased only because of marketing or shopping compulsion. Next time read (internet, reviews, forums) and think ("is that the thing that I need?") before buying a 600+ euros device that you don't know what really is.
Once again: noob, stay away from windows mobile, use symbian, s40 or iphone, but don't pretend to be a pro with winmobile and then ***** because you can't use it in the way you suppose to

I have in fact a touch dual and i think even this device surpasses this one.. AND i read the reviews belive me and this was a lot of money down the drain..
I expected at least the feautures my 18 month nokia have in a slick format with a touchscreen but no,it`s so far behind that it is rediculus.. No good for me i want more,i do not want to search this otherwise exellent forum for things that already is done in my E90.
I was just curious about what other think about it,if it suits you thats fine but for me it`s simply no good..

Goodbye Xperia, googbye Microsoft... Vive la Android!

Hey folks,
being XPERIA owner for two months, I was often annoyed by the slugginess, bad operationality and quite many [small] issues.
Now I've ordered and got an "Android Dev Phone 1" (= HTC Dream = T-Mobile G1) and I love it! The interface is clean and smooth, it feels so much faster now! Sure some things aren't implemented yet (eg. virtual keybord or synchronization with Outlook) but I actually don't need them, and most of them will come already with the next Android update in Jan/Feb.
So I'm now swithing to the "HTC Dream" section and to other forums.
Any questions à la "Android vs Windows" or "X1 vs G1" are welcome here, though.
Best regards,
Vygi
I tried that phone in the T-mobile shop when I was still waiting for the X1 to appear and didn't like anything about it.. still - each to their own!
i like the design of X1 better than the G1. but i like linux (using on laptop to).
it would be nice to run android on X1

The G1 didn't do it for me since it has a low-res 480x320 screen. Even now, with the X1's mighty WVGA screen I sometime wish it was even sharper, something like 1024x600 would do just fine .
Tweaking and a couple of apps loaded onto the phone, my Xperia is working awesome! I love it more than i did my iPhone! startup is a bit slow... meh! but who cares!
Anyways... G1 doesn't appeal to me... and besides - if i do like any next release of Android or even Blackberry OS, i'll unload Windows off of Xperia and load 'em onto Xperia.
Actually I'm still shocked how awful WM is. I used phone and Palm T5 before and I wanted to have all in one package, so I went for Xperia.
While the device is nice, that software is bad, bad, bad. Everything is slow, ill designed, all freeware I found is full of bugs, even lot's of commercial software simply does not work.
What is also shocking me is while my T5 is two years old now, it plays movies 20% better then Xperia (TCPMP on Palm, CorePlayer on Xperia) !
Maybe it's a bit early for Android, but WM is just crap, it must be all started over. PalmOS was great, and there is no replacement.
I say bring on NVIDIA Tegra chip based mobiles with WinMo7. :O

The market & reality tells it all. If PalmOS is so great, it wouldn't be dying like the way it is now. It UI (especially the input method) was so hard to use and handle for ordinary people. It may run smoother and more efficiently than WM, but the real truth is it's does not handle multi-tasking.
It would be cool to have Android on the X1 next to WinMo. I hope the guys over here can get it to work properly:

Not sure if they're still working on it though..

I used SKTools, Advanced configuration Tool, and XperiaTweak to tweak up my Xperia's performance.
I also installed HTC's Touch HD's keyboard but didn't like it, especially when it opened slow at times and so on... so i uninstalled that and moved to SPB Keyboard - which is AWESOME!
Then... i installed IneSoft AddressBook + Phone. Way quicker than Xperia's AddressBook/Contacts and dialer, quicker, and a cool looking Today screen add-in. Really Fast! And i totally love it! (i like the dialer better than HTC's TF3D Dialer as well).
With these tweaks and apps, and a few additional freeware stuff (like flash today screens, battery indicators, and so on) my Xperia is functioning really fast and without problems.
FYI - i also have panels running and TF3D installed as a Panel (which is running way smoother and faster after using SKTools to tweak up the device). I also have Winterface installed, though barely ever use it - it is enabled though in the background. I also have Push Mail enabled on the device which works flawlessly - as it did on my iPhone. And over 10 games installed working without any lags.
I won't lie, but there are occassional hiccups/lags, but not as much for one to notice. (even my iPhone faced quite a couple of lags and hang-ups once i installed apps onto it and so on). The only thing i hate at this point is the startup of the device... oh and the Facebook panel, which has the tendency to crash sometimes...
Best Regards.

Yep... i updated it. And it is improved, a lot! but still has the tendency to crash at times. Mostly when it is refreshing the main page and i hit the Panel button (not always, but usually) and a few other random occurrences...

My experiences aren't so extreme but I feel somewhat the same: great hardware, but lame operating system, bad and non-uniform operatibility, and so on. When I ask "how to do this" or "how to manage that", often I get advices to apply registra hacks and use special system tweaks or install some additional software. When after them the system is slow of some strange issues appear - then I have to blyme myself, because I have too many things installed and too many settings changed!
Now I have found an alternative which costs 20% less and is about 200% better (faster/more stable) to me!
There are actually just very few things I like more on Xperia:
- better battery
- better screen resolution
- light sensor to change screen brightess
And there are things which are better on DevPlone1 (G1/Dream):
- much much better user interface
- generally much faster, no freezes/blackouts/pauses
- great multitasking/task switching (eg. the browser starts in 0,5 sec)
- compass and g-sensor available
- better keyboard
- better speaker
- great integration of online Email, Contacts, Calendar
- software easy to find and to install
- faster battery charging
Next year many other Android devices will be available, and I maybe I will take another one, but also with the current Dream/G1/DevPhone1 I am much more happy than with X1!
In short... For me, when i played with HTC Touch Diamond (my cousin's) i liked the power of Windows Mobile but was totally NOT impressed by the usual lags and bugginess of the device... so i was really concerned if Windows Mobile would be a good choice (i was looking at the Blackberry Bold as an alternative to WinMo). Eventually, i decided to go with X1 and though initially it was better than i expected but not that good either, after a tweak here and there and a little enhancements the Xperiance has turned out be quite ideal. Sure laggy at times (though not occassional), but it is turning out to be the device i thought it would be, if not better!

Though Windows Mobile is more professional of an OS, and tweaking + optimizing can make the experience better... but there's no denying that Android holds a lot of potential - especially being Open Source!!!
When i look at the G1 phone i'm more like "Bleh!", but i do like Android. When more features come - including Microsoft Exchange and a full office suite (maybe these are already available... not sure) and more - and it all comes loaded into a better looking phone, i might go for it as well. But i'll definitely be holding onto my Xperia. It is by far the best windows mobile device ever! and regardless of the not-so-usual lags and Windows Mobile bugs/limitations... i don't regret purchasing it at all.
I will probably end up buying an Android phone in the near future as well and then have three phones to myself...
Microsoft really needs to step up and get one heck of a Windows Mobile 7 operating system released as soon as possible! And having tested Windows 7 on my desktop - seeing how Microsoft is finally going in the right direction, i'm positive that they will surprise us this time with a Windows Mobile that actually performs better than any other OS out there.
are you selling your X1 i would like to buy it please PM me
Thank you; no Microsoft anymore: not 6th, nor 7th nor 8th++.
Two months were more that enough.
Now I enjoy the speed and power of Android** (the 1st!) every single minute.
**) it might be Nokia N97 with the touch-screen-capable Symbian S60 as well.... it just comes too late to me.

Of course if the so-called "market" (read cartel) had any sort of bloody clue whatsoever, we wouldn't have been held back 10 years on desktop PCs with a crappy, inferior 8086 archtecture. PalmOS isn't any great shakes, but any OS like WM that takes 5 seconds to dismiss a "SMS sent" notification on high-end hardware should have been drowned at birth, and failing that should be put out of it's misery post-haste! Free Software FTW!

When the time comes... we'll see. Officially i don't think so, but i'm sure we'll see cooked roms flying in in no time!

X1 goes in the draw tomorrow...

time for an iPhone 3G S tomorrow! yay...
X1 was the biggest dissapointment ever for me! this phone was so over hyped and then when it finally came out the panels interface was just this biggest flop ever! still is...i mean seriously?!?!? where are they all?
anyway...enough of all this windows mobile ****...even 6.5 is a let down...
i guess thats why i'm also buying a MacBook Pro next week too!

Well .. I'm quite disappointed too .. but iPhone just wont cut it for me. For example I require playback of non-converted videos in common formats (avi, mpg, flv). No smartphone can do that well at the moment.
I'm at the moment I'm staying with Xperia and hoping that Palm wont block 3rd part media player development ..
But sure, iPhone, especially the new one, looks great, and everything it can do it does better. Way better.
iPhone is for macfags.

The panels interface was indeed the most useless thing ever. That's why I uninstalled it. Although you have had some problems with the X1, you'll encounter new ones with the new iPhone. Add to that, you'll be paying a bucketload of money for that new device. Why would you buy a MacBook? Windows mobile =/ Windows.

Interesting that you're still using both. Apparently the iPhone lacks something that the X1 doesn't.

That is degenerating, not a proper way to approach posts like the above.

All in all, personally I prefer the X1 (or any WVGA HTC WM phone) over the iPhone because it's customizable. I like being able to tinker around with it. I also prefer Microsoft's approach (although, I'm aware, they're just as imperfect as any other company) to operating systems.
Then again the iPhone does have much better graphical support, smoother UI etc.
If only Apple and Microsoft would merge
iPhone is for tech illiterate sheep that want to look trendy in front of their equally degenerated friends. Flashy, useless, unproductive toy with features that phones had in 1999............
let us know how you like your iphone.
i was looking and playing with one the other day. it was ok but i like the customization that you can do on the windows mobile. i like the big screen but i didnt like the touch (capacitance?). i like to use my fingernails a bit and it doesnt work on the iphone screen.
The major problem with the iPhone for me is the lack of a hardware keyboard. I can handle a normal phone keypad, prefer a qwerty keyboard but cannot type on a touchscreen. I don't care what some people say, for me, a touchscreen keyboard is not good enough.

Its not just the xperia its self that puts it down - its the lack of a Microsoft Marketplace yet and Windows mobile 6.5 - xperia would be a lot better if Windows Mobile Market place was available and if the scrolling on it was iphone smooth other than that i like my xperia

have You ever had an iphone in Your hand? obviously You are talking nonsense. these days You can do almost every thing on ipod that it's doable on winmo. okay... it is not so customizable, but it's interface is simple and just works. works like a charm. I am keeping xperia only untill september and after that I'll get iphone 3gs or something else, maybe n97 or omnia hd. dunno... it pisses me off that for instance I cannot view videos recorded with my wifes n95 8gb without reencoding. that is just f... silly this days.
why iphone 3gs? well... I went to o2 store yesterday to have a look and I am simply amazed. speed. SPEEED..... it is just that feeling of smootheness of whatever You do on those non wm devices.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QMx6aLGWVU I know, it's not perfect, but try to record something similiar with x1.
please, feel free to give me some reasons why it is worthy to stick with windows mobile except rom flashing and customization of visuals... multitasking is nice, true, but how often You just cannot live without it?? well I can...

Exactly what i want in xperia and the smoothness is the main reason i am drawn to the iphone - if the xperia is just as powerfull as the iphone 3G (if not more) why cant it be as smooth is it to do with the resistive touchscreen????

u say that u cant view videos recorded with an n95 8gb on ur x1 without re-encoding it(i can btw), but how do u intend to do it using an iPhone?
if You are saying that You can view those videos recorded @ 640 x 480 highest quality on n95 8gb smoothly without massive stuttering, then You are lying. period. I never said that I want an iphone to watch my wifes videos, the other thing is that I never said that I hate xperia. as a matter of fact I still like it a lot, but I am bit tired with this all customize & tweak me for weeks stuff just to realise it is still slow.

I guess when you get something like an iPhone it works fine out of the box you dont need to tweak it to get it right which is which is what i dont get from windows mobile devices - why are they not already tweaked to offer the best performance?
simple example - why, oh why those simple tweaks like increasing of glyph and filesystem cache are not factory set for performance??
couldnt agree more with u on the disappointment part, sony ericsson produced one hell of a **** expensive phone.. sometimes im even using my old 1st gen iphone :s
Xperia broken.
Last Saturday my X1 broke. I was at a party and decided to jump over a car gate at an old summerhouse. Thing is, it wasn't steadied at all or fastened in the ground, so it swung with my body, resulting in me landing hard on it and it gave my Xperia a good blow. Now half the screen is dead and the slider part is crooked, and I don't have insurance on it so it'll cost me about 100 - 200 dollars to get it fixed.
That is why I'm getting an iPhone 3GS when it comes to Sweden. I like the seamless Mac experience that just works (and is really great looking) and, actually, the fact that I'm not gonna want to flash it every other day.
Don't get me wrong here, I'm quite the avid customizer of all things techy, and I love playing around with settings and tweaks just to feel like I'm improving my device. Now really. I understand why the people here at XDA like their devices - it's because of the new roms. BUT. It's simply retarded for the company making the phone not to include those optimisations OOTB. I understand that a lot of things is set slower by default to gain battery and ensure a safe phone, but let's face it. An iPhone provides a better experience for ALL customers, not only the ones who know how to tweak their device.
I'd suggest by simple human psychology patterns that people like tweaking their phones because it brings them a satisfactory sense of being special - knowing something not all the owners of a particular thing knows. Though, think about it. It would be kind of nice to be free of the constant urge to flash your phone, all you flashoholics? I sure know that I feel that way. Sort of like being free from a time consuming freedom or wanting a schedule when you have nothing but free time.
That's just my two cents, I won't miss my Xperia much. I'm rather glad it broke (although it was a blow to my economics, but hey).

Can someone please explain what is wrong with Windows Mobile 6.5

Okay here I am setting myself up to be flamed - you see I don't understand what the beef is with Windows Mobile 6.5? I know it is a bit of a gloss job and that there is room for improvement but what is so intrinsically wrong with it that so many people are screaming about it...is it so unusable, or unstable - I know it is not the Apple OS and that I have to say may have its upsides. But what is the big problem.
So go for it shout at me - call me ignorant - but if you can enlighten me please do.
I am about to get an HD2 and am looking forward to the whole experience.

It looks kinda ugly (not fingerfriendly, no animations), misses APIs for the hardware in modern devices and the UI controls provided by Visual studio are ugly as well, making software development for WM sometimes difficult.
That's it. The list of good things about WM is a lot longer.
All in all, there's nothing wrong with WM except for its reputation in the blogosphere.
It has its pros and cons like every other phone OS. None of them is perfect and iPhone OS or Android are not better than WM at all. They're just different, less powerful but easier to use.

and alot more popular. iPhone has the famous app store, with about 1000 quality games and 5000 quality apps.
I had no difficulties finding equivalents for every application when I switched away from the iPhone. WM has 30.000 applications as well.
But popularity is a problem.
I for one am so bored of the apple lovers saying get an Iphone over the hd2. If you want an iphone just get one, its a decent phone if thats what you want. WM6.5 isnt the most finger friendly OS but i think the big/only limitation for the hd2 is the fact it doesnt support our hardware very well in the kernel (which hasnt been updated since WM5 really), so to that end our device is only as slick as it is due to the massive overspec of the processor.
Yes WM7 will be better, but its certainly not a reason to wait and not buy a HD2. This forum has hundreds of threads in the leo section talking about iphone this and that, and frankly i am pretty sure i am not the only one sick of it.
I for one think WM6.5 on the HD2 is more than a decent OS, yes i dont interact with it directly that often but if i need to then i can at least get to the guts easily (file explorer/reg edit etc) which is way more difficult on other mobile platforms.
It isnt perfect but certianly isnt worth all of the chat thats going around atm.
I don't want an iphone and too am tired of the iphone zealots - I have been following the Leo since it was leaked it is the phone for me I just wanted to know what the big beef with WM 6.5 is.
I am currently using a BlackBerry Bold and it is a nice device but feel so limited beyond texting and emailing. But the HD2 that is a whole new ballgame.
Thanks for the feedback - I am looking forward to getting the phone in February.
Scott
There is nothing intrinsically wrong with 6.5 except its lack of finger friendlyness, which depending on what you use the phone for could be a positive or a negative. Its biggest drawback is the poor quality of the original phones gave it a bad press which certain tech websites have never let go.
Personally I have had WM phones since the Wizard and have used a number of different ones since. I also have a Hero and found Android very good but ultimately not as usable as WM6.1 or WM6.5. My current phone is a HD2 which beats the the Hero and the iPhone at virtually every everyday task it has been given. (even the Hero stood up very well against the iPhone).
As for apps, yet again the media seem to think the only way to get an app on your phone is through an app store - carefully ignoring the fact that WM has had apps since day 1, just not all available from one place.

FPMSL!!!!!!
Well, there might really be 6000 quality apps among those 110000.
That's 5.5%. If 20% of all WM applications are quality ones, then there's already more quality applications for WM than for the iPhone. Especially if you add PSX games that all work great on WM now
Don't take this too serious, I'm just having a bit of fun. There's lots of good applications for the iPhone, but I never missed anything when I switched (back) to WM.
While I have all of you to talk to - what is the best registry editor to get for my HD2? I also want to look at a task manager as well...
Any feedback much appreciated.

One thing I can not get about Iphone apps is fact they take normal app and call it something new and wonderful.
There is this app for iphone that splits the restaurant bill on to as many people as you want.
I thin on all other phones it is called a calculator and it can do so much more as well as is free.
Another example of stupid paid app is Ducati history app. Why pay I think £2.99 for it (BTW it still only works if you are online) when you can get the same at Ducati.com. Only reason I can think off is because Ducati site is flash based?!

Get resco explorer with regedit plugin. However I think full one you have to pay. For a free app there is PHM Registry editor:
http://freewareppc.com/utilities/phmregistryeditor.shtml
to edit registry of your winmo device via your laptop you will need active sync and CeRegeditor by mdSoft. It allows you to export keys you want and convert them in to cab installs so if you need to hard reset it is just click and go for all your registry tweaks.

Why we love our HD2? Guys, share with me

These days, I've seen way too many threads like "Goodbye HD2, hello Iphone", "Htc Hd2 bye bye" or "Wtf with this phone". I cant stand it. So I want to have a praise thread for our HD2, our beloved and best one, also want to share my opinions on the HD2 and Winmo generally for everyone to see and think.
Here are some type of opinions quite popular these days:
"Windows mobile 6.5 is a dead os for lack of a better term and also know that the development for apps for it is going to taper and die off at some point"
"HD2 is too buggy, laggy, errors"
"Winmo is a waste for HD2"
"Where are the games and apps?"
"Not work out of the box?"
To answer, first of all, I dont care about apps that Iphone or Android has.
I dont play games much now so that's a second point. Although they do have some very interesting like Tunewiki or Layar, that's the only thing I miss from my old 3GS and Hero. And if u paid so many money for games on iphone, why dont paid a 5 Euro more for Fpsece, to have the best experience about PS1 games on a mobile device so far.
Secondly, about basic apps, Winmo wins.
For videos: I dont have to spend hours to find a good convert program and hours to config and wait for the converted file to transfer to my phone, Coreplayer and TCPMP serve them right.
For ebooks: the most popular format is prc, Mobipocket reader wins again, I dont have to convert either.
For office: what can win over office mobile, please show me, I have no idea about this.
And u know what, Winmo has these basic things and apps for free!!!
Third, the true multitask:
Winmo has been a winner since the start. I agree that Iphone can be jailbreak then install e.g Proswitcher, but that's not so convenient like Winmo. The basic thing about Android is it never really closes an app, keeping it running in the background for quick response, but that only makes Android become slower and laggy just like Winmo. But for convenient, and with a power specs like HD2, it's so great in terms of multitask for me.
Fourth, the screen:
HD2 has a great and super beautiful 4.3 inch screen. I can never go back to a 3.2 (Hero) or 3.5(Iphone) now, I will consider for a 3.7 one. Watching photos, videos, viewing documents, surfing. It's superb with HD2. And please dont expect a device with great screen like that to have a good battery life. More than a day with normal usage is so enough. I got 1.5 days or even more than 2 days with my HD2.
Fifth, and the best one imo, CUSTOMIZATIONS
Winmo is the best world for customizations, for devs and chefs. It got history, and it's truly popular, right? I love to tweak my phone, customize it the way I one, change every weeks or even every days, so I cannot get bored with it. And look at this forum, so many manila mods have been built and definitely going on and on. From maxmanilla, cookie home tabs, GTX, all are wonderful and amazing. I cant thank them and all the chefs here enough.
Now, look at Iphone, what can u do with this easy to get bored home screen, except for changing icons?
And even android, it's not easy to customize it without rooting. And things to customize so far? Not much, I see.
For all that has errors, bugs, laggy, I think it's just u to make the phone like that, not the phone itself (if it's not a defective one). Too many report shows the phone works out of the box, count me in for that. I went with stock rom for a month at first with nothing went wrong.
Winmo to me is never a dead OS like it seems now. It's still growing strong in the world thanks to xda, yes, xda is the one that makes it strong, imo. We love to tweak, we love to customize, we love to share our knowledge and stuffs, so we are here. If u just dont feel like to tweak, u better not be here, xda is not some place where u can just complain and complain everyday for ur own faults.
Finally, HD2 is not a waste to me to run Winmo, it's best with Winmo.
Whew, my longest post so far. Guys, dont leave me alone, come and praise our HD2, I know u will.
List the best things u ever had with HD2 and show the world
P.S: it's just my opinion, but we all have private and personal purposes for using mobile in our life, so that we have personal choices on mobile, so please dont flame on me so hard, haha
1. big screen - can see web pages better than my x1a 3" screen
2. software options (still compatible with the software i use on my old phone) tomtom 7 - no need to have a data connection to use gps, slick im - use this when im on the move, option of using several different types of web browsers (ie, opera, opera mini, skyfire)
3. phone is unlocked and can use it as a prepaid phone.
Exactly mate, should have mentioned the chasing game between apple and devs, it's really annoying sometimes. And the price for an unlock iphone is really ridiculous.
You know, I have both the Nexus one and HD2, but I am really thinking of selling my HD2. I love all the things you have mentioned, but texting is kind of a big deal to me. With an HD2, the keyboard so choppy, no matter the rom I try. If I can somehow fix it, bye bye nexus. If not, well...
Just thinking would there be a phone that has a screen larger than 4.3" in the future or this is the biggest already? By the way 4.3" wide is a common size for GPS device.

The athena had a 5inch screen.... but you couldn't use it as a regular handset. You needed to use either bluetooth headsets or speakerphone. It was a cool phone, though.
You guys covered it
I agree with everything you guys said, except texting prob, I use swype, love it!! By far best phone I've ever had!! Just added, msvc, love it, just made perfect, better!!
My main reason for choosing HD2 over iphone or android devices is privacy!
I don't have to have apple and google knowing everything about me!

exactly my thoughts.
I love it because the great hardware I saw this as a newstep after the qualcomm 528 mhz. Wich was used for 3 or more years. This was a newstep for 2 years this will be a fast phone. And the freedom of windows mobile is also great.
Simply the best phone I ever had! Does everything I need and more!
I love my HD2 because it's big, it's strong, it's fast and give me the possibility to customize everything like I want.
I love my HD2 even because makes me different from all the mass of sheeps that walk around with an Iphone and use their phono to simulate a beer drinking and s**t like this.
Having an HD2, like my good old HTC Topaz, makes me feel different and like a pro.
I have always been a win mobile user. love the ability to anything! can send files bluetooth, COMPLETELY change the theme of the phone, and modify the software ANY way you see fit. suck on that iphone.
The only thing I would change would be camera hardware button
They say the HD2 will be the last in windows mobile 6.5. what a way to go out with a bang!!!
windows mobile+huge screen+fast processor= one sick device
I could probably be classified as a (very) dull business user and I have never before cared over what device was put into my hands..
I have used SE, Nokia, HTC, you name it, and even a iPhone for a while, and all worked okay and I did type an occasional e-mail on them but in reality they all fell short, some with clunky e-mail integration other with unsuitable screens for reading long texts.
With the HD2 I have hit "home", I have become truly freed from my office - I can access and work with my e-mails, read trough and review extensive attachment, surf the web, get online with my laptop without hassle trough the WiFi router. First phone I ever used that work seamless with bluetooth both in the car and with headsets.
It's a serious device and not a toy with downloaded flashlight applications.

These are the things that I never bother or want to do with my old 3GS and Hero
Hi,
I like:
1) Screen (come on 4.3 inch MAMA MYA that’s nice step for mobile phones. I will never buy IPhone 4G if it’s less than 4.3 inch screen)
2) Design (Very slim very sexy)
3) Speed (yeah it’s really speedy)
4) Freedom (WOW the best thing. No more F jailbreak)
I don't like:
1) SMS messaging interface (Please anyone know other messaging interfaces? or at least to tell me how to disable the loading of messages as once. I rather like IPhone messaging where it loads small amount of sms in the chat area and load more history sms on request if needed)
2) Battery life (To bad to be in such great device)

1) SMS messaging interface (Please anyone know other messaging interfaces? or at least to tell me how to disable the loading of messages as once. I rather like IPhone messaging where it loads small amount of sms in the chat area and load more history sms on request if needed)
2) Battery life (To bad to be in such great device)

I always have over 400 sms in my inbox, and it loads quite quickly, I think. No problem for me. Why dont u try the old style thread messaging from Energy rom or some other roms?
Thank you for starting this post. I was reluctant to upgrade from my Touch Pro to the HD2 for the lack of a hardware keyboard, which I used constantly. The big, beautiful screen won me over and I'm happy to report that I'm typing as fast as ever now that I'm used to my HD2.
I love the huge screen, HTC Sense (Thanks to Cookie and averyone else, not enough room in this thread), one touch dialing, programs etc, etc.
Every, and I mean EVERY challenge that I had with my phone when I first bought it has been solved by using these forums.
Every, and I mean EVERY modification that I could have dreamed of has been supplied by using these forums.
This has been the case since I started using WinMo and with every device I've owned.
These sour grapes posts by individuals who refuse to take the time to use this fine provision in order to make full use of their HD2 are a slap in the face to the hardworking developers who have brought countless hours of joy to the rest of us who deeply appreciate their work.
To the developers and contributors of this forum: I salute you.
To the individuals who are posting their "Bye, Bye" threads. Please leave quietly, and don't let the door hit you in the iphone.
Oh finally some positive thread for HD2.
So what i love about my HD2.
Speed - lighting fast
Customization - Thanks Winmo 6.5
Usefull Programs - Programs that really matters. Like Resco explorer and image viewer, FPSEce,iGO with multitouch and compass
BIG screen - The Biggest!
Open platform (flashing ROMs) - Can be really fun
Loud speakers - Well maybe too much =)
Capacitive screen with multitouch - Say yes to best gaming experience
How the phone feels in pocket (comfortable) - You dont even know it's in your pocket
But there are few bad things =(
Development - The newest games looks like ripped of java with touch support
Really old core of OS - Winmo 6.5 is quite ugly too
Reset button under Battery cover - lol at this one
