ok, i'm as n00b as they come when it comes to this. Can someone tell me what firmware, ROM, OS upgrades I need/should get. It's the AT&T version of the phone and I want to make all the neccesary upgrades before I start using it. Thank you soooooo much, John
If it is brand new you have the most current stuff. Go to www.my-siemens.com and you can download the a.20.17 update if you dont have it on your device.
If you just got it you would be CRAZY to screw with it. Especially if you haven't read EVERY SINGLE POST here pertaining to the dangers of flashing.
If you still want to noob it and screw around, invest in a card reader, make a backup of your rom, and be prepared to have a shiny silver paperweight just in case. DO NOT use any .exe upgrade packages that are not from Siemens.
yeah... i kinda wanted the new OS 2003 though
i know i was looking before i got my phone and i saw a package that was released by AT&T wireless, specifically for this model of phone, and now i can't remember where the hell i saw it.
also, the phone is locked... i thought that the rogers US and rogers at&t canada networks were identical. any advice/suggestions on that?!?
Thanks for your reply by the way
Most phones come with the SimCard locked for a particular carrier. Since you are most likely not going to switch for awhile, this is no big deal. If you do ever decide to switch to a different carrier, you can break the sim lock using a utility located on this site. I WOULD NOT do this until you are sure you want to switch carriers though. Otherwise it is a waste and potentially damaging to your unit
actually, i cannot use the phone right now. I purchased it off ebay and it is locked for the US AT&T, however, i'm in Canada using the AT&T service up here. I need to unlock it.
Should i buy the cable, upgrade the ROM? help?!

No need to panic...
Just download and run this
Then if you want to upgrade to WM2003, simply visit here and cook a self-extracting exe based on 4.00.11 (just my personal suggestion, tastes differ).
(Yup, we added 4.00.11 and 4.00.16 to the kitchen menu)
Any obvious benefits of .11 or .16 over .05 or .10?
holy ****... everyone here has been so damn helpful so far. thank you so much...
alright, so far so good... i just finished upgrading to the xda developers rom and it unlocked the phone for me
this would be the ultimate now...
i want a ROM with just the Mobile 2003 factory settings and nothing else installed. This ROM has a bunch of crap on it that I wouldn't know how to use if my life depended on it. I just want the new Mobile 2003. What is the best way to do this?
Do I just cook one up with only the 4.00.11 ENG WM2003 selected... Is there a better way... Thank you so much again, John
Just take the .16 ROM and deselect all the progs you don't want. Then you will have the latest ROM as it comes from Tmobile. Just a few cosmetic changes in the cooked rom.
is it recommended to use the t-mobile ROM despite the fact that i'm using a rogers at&t phone?
Make battery warning adjustable
Fix 'multiple resets make device slow' bug (WM2003 only)
Remove 'stk.lnk' from Startup folder (WM2003 only)
also which of these do you recommend installing?
The rom version doesnt make a difference. You will not get the "G" which lets you know you can make an internet connection with any of the roms above 4.00.05 though.
Install all of stuff you mentioned.
so last and FINAAAAAAAAAAL question...
4.00.05 ENG WM2003 (3906 kB available)
4.00.10 ENG T-Mobile US (2119 kB available)
4.00.11 ENG WM2003 (3906 kB available)
4.00.16 ENG T-Mobile US (2119 kB available)
if you were picking? and why? thank you so very much
That is personal opinion. If you want only the basic tmobile install you can go with any of them and just deselect the other programs. Keep in mind that having these programs doesn't hurt you for the don't take up any memory on your device until you run them. That is the beauty of having the in ROM not RAM. Just be careful what you play with. The idea is that the higher the number, the later the release, so the more stable it may be. Again this is just an idea.

I would personally pick 4.00.11 unless you're on US T-Mobile, or happen to need the PDF and/or Presentation Viewer.
I would suggest you to take the 4.00.11 if you are not on the T-mobile.
Btw, this 4.00.11 is tested to fit the AWS along with the A20.10 I think....
Sorry I didn't search guys... But real quick, what is the latest Titan ROM & where can I get it? I'm currently running the old 2.14 ROM. What are the advantages of upgrading to the new one? Excuse my noobedness... lol
Oh, my provider is ALLTEL by the way...
Latest ROM
Well the latest TITAN ROM is Sprints 3.35 available at the HTC America page, but if your looking for something to work with alltel you'll have to go see whats been cooked up by folks like DCD or NEX....

Check the Titan Upgrades forum for all the information you need.
Thanks. I looked in there but I was a little confused about if carrier mattered. Thanks!

I really shouldn't do this since I'm a Sprint guy but it doesn't look like there is much Alltel help around here. The steps are fairly simple ( make SURE you double check on the upgrade threads)
1. Write down all your phone info (MSID, etc.) in case you need to reprogram the phone later.
2. Upgrade to the latest Sprint ROM (this is basically to get the new Radio with GPS capability)
3. Load SPL 2.40-olipro bootloader (Extremely important! - DO NOT attempt to load a custom ROM without this bootloader installed)
4. Load any Custom ROM you want (most Custom and Kitchen ROMs will have an Alltel specific ROM)
Enjoy.
(just to be safe, if you are running Windows, I'd do this on a XP machine.)

Greetings all,
I used to have an HTC TYTN, and successfully flashed custom ROMs on it, although it required a lot of work. I recently purchased a HTC Hero, and am interested in rooting it, but I had a few questions for those of you capable of answering...
I live in Alaska, we do not have any major carriers up here except AT&T, so I have to use a local carrier called ACS - Alaska Communications Systems.
I wanted to know if anyone knew of a custom ROM or a way to set up a ROM to use that carrier. When I flashed my TYTN, I had to go back in and custom set a BUNCH of stuff with the help of another ACS customer who had a TYTN. The Sprint ROM I used set up things wrong - changed settings for data and such.
Secondly, I wanted to know if there is a way to root the phone without using a custom ROM? I've looked around briefly, but the 3 guides I've looked at all used a custom ROM.
Thanks in advance guys, and sorry if my questions seems stupid.
yea, you HAVE to root the phone to install a custom rom. So you can run a stock rom rooted. Someone else will have to help you with the setting up of the data on the phone. talk/text should be decently simple. MSL number probably needs to be set to 000000 and then a prl loaded for the provider you are using. Data will probably be a lot harder..
No, not yet. The problem is that it's using the older 2.6.27 kernel but it's patched for the known exploits. Keep an eye on the Droid Eris root status thread.
The Droid Eris is very similar to the HTC Hero and it's running the same kernel. Whatever exploit they find for root on the Eris should work on Alaska DigiTel or ACS versions of the Hero but of course there's no guarantee.
[Told this by someone else; new to this rooting scene]
Just to clarify... You don't NEED to root your phone to get your phone on the carrier you are using. All that is required is changing your MSL number and uploading your carriers PRL. Entering in the correct EPST settings could probably get your data working as well.. MMS and probably a host of other things will be a problem. NONE of this requires you to root your phone.
I thought Alaska Com sold the Hero...so its not like you are buying a Sprint one and taking it on their network are you?
If its an Alaska Com Hero - All of your stuff will work. However, I doubt our Asroot2 exploit works on it. I think the other Hero owners on networks other than sprint have been using the "gold card" method...and I have NO clue how to do that. I know you have to make a special SD card. But you should be able to load any of the hero roms since they don't mess with those carrier settings.
Search the sub-forum for GoldCard.
I wrote a guide on how to root with the GoldCard.
Just search my threads.
First i apologize for creating another new thread and disturbing you guys. But i took mytime going through the website and the tutorials, and it made me more confused.

A Rom is basically an operating system for your phone. A Custom/Cooked Rom is a Stock/Shipped Rom that has been stripped of clutter and tweaked to give the best performance. Custom Roms usually contain the latest updates and programs so are more stable and up to date and work better than stock roms that are supplied with your phone.
In my understanding, think of flashing as giving your phone more freedom and you only need to flash HARDSPL your device only "ONCE" to take advantage of the features that custom ROMs offer. You can hardspl ur device easily via usb cable (without a memory card), so read the post in d link above thoroughly n ask feel free 2 ask more questions.

The HPSL is what, for lack of a better term, "jailbreaks" the HD2. The ROMs are the operating systems of the phones. Radios are also an important thing, and they have something to do with how your phone interacts with the network.
Now, I'm a n00b myself, so anybody please feel free to correct any errors I made.

I want to make sure you're not getting confused on something here...
Are you trying to get your phone to the point where you can run non-official ROM's on it? That's what using HSPL and flashing is.
Or, are you trying to be able to use the phone with other carriers than T-Mobile? That requires unlocking (completely independent of HSPL/flashing), and that's not something that's there's a tutorial for you to do...you either need to call T-Mobile and tell them you need the unlock code, or if you aren't a T-Mobile customer you will need to use one of the various unlocking services you'll find on e-bay, etc.

The step you're trying there (clear data) is also known as a "hard-reset"...it wipes the data off your phone and returns it to the orginial state of whatever ROM you currently have flashed on it (in your case: Cleanex)....so to get it back the way it was when you bought it, you'll need to flash a stock T-Mobile ROM back on to it.

Yes, that's pretty much exactly how it works. You can find the official download for it at this link:
http://dl.htc.com/ruudownload/t-mobileUS/Filedownload.aspx?pid=leo
You'll have to enter your phone's IMEI number (located on a sticker beneath the battery) to verify that you have an HD2, and then it will let you download. It's pretty simple to do, but here's a set of detailed instructions if you need (which include the step of downloading from that link above):

I read in the forum that the ROMs don't unlock your phone. They are just customizations for whatever the purpose may be. I use MIRI v17.6 ROM so that I can run Android on my HD2 US. I'm only missing Microsoft Word Mobile. My HTC HD2 US is unlocked because I paid cash for it and I requested the unlock code from T-Mobile unlike my iPhone 3GS that is still locked even though I owed no money on it.
I have not read anything about unlocking (rooting in this forum?) your HD2 (I assume) in this forum. Remember, Google has the answer for virtually everything if you ask her.
I hope you slept well!

Also, if i may add, the HPSL3 is some kind of protection not to damage your phone in case you use the wrong ROM, I read. therefore, for the HD2 US, I watched on youtube how to install the HSPL3. Then I picked a ROM that suits my purpose and I flashed my HD2 (on youtube also). That's it. I did not have to bother installing a radio file because my ROM did not require it since I have the US hd2.

Hello, i just bought a verizon htc trophy and i live in Peru, does someone knows a website where i could unlock free?
also, i read when i flash the phone to a custom ROM the phone free it selfs?
To carrier unlock it, you can call Verizon and ask them to unlock the SIM for international travel, but no guarantees.
To developer unlock or full unlock (using either WP SDK for the first or the DFT HSPL tool) the Trophy you need to follow the various tutorials out there.

To have the sim unlock you have to call verizon. There isn't any other way to unlock it unless you pick up an aftermarket sim, which I can't help you with. (I don't know, nor know if they are legal in the US.) They might be able to unlock it depending on how long the last owner had it on their plan.
Besides, its a good PDA. Flash the Norkser 8858 rom and follow the steps for CAB updates in the WP7 Development and Hacking forum.

That not quite how windows phones work. Flashing a different rom, only flashes the OS, not the stuff that directly interacts with the Hardware, e.g. the Radio driver. There is only three radios for the Verizon Trophy and they are all from Verizon, so there isn't much to do. The Radio is what controls the SIM locking, and no one has tried decompiling it, afaik. I'm afraid that you either have to contact the last owner or call verizon. Not much more I can do.
You can try and see if its been already unlocked by inserting your SIM, but chances are that it will prompt you for an unlock code. You can get that from various sites online and pay, or try Verizon for free.
