Hey all,
(T-mobile UK btw)
I've been using a WM6 rom I got here ages ago for my Hermes. It's been a great performance boost in that it's cut down and slimline so seems to free up a little more program menu...
However there have been some persistent problems I haven't fixed yet....
I managed to set up Web 'n' Walk with some general settings I found on the internet...but I can't get MMS or voicemail to work.
For voicemail I dial 121, get the same 'the settings have been sent to your phone' and a text arrives saying 'Network Pers' but it never works, not on deleting or rebooting - think it only works on 'normal' phones. Anyway I can then usually ultimately get through to voicemail. Although it stops all the links to voicemail from the handset working.
MMS is the really anoying thing however.
I've noticed one additional problem...which is that now incoming calls terminate my internet connection to web'n' walk and I don't think that was the case before.
Lastly if anyone is using t-mobile UK can I ask them to recommend a good radio rom as the one I'm using seems to have some (occasional) conenction issues and a cracky line - especially if the other person's phone isn't too hot either but I do also occasionally get it on landlines.

Radio ROM - 1.50.00 was ripped from the official T-M UK WM6 upgrade (so I'm lead to believe). Anyway, it's a great Radio for T-Mobile.
MMS - you need to set the MMS up separately from Internet, then send an MMS to yourself (and check it was received) before others can send an MMS to you.
Voicemail - just hold down the 1 key on the virtual keypad, should work.
Terminating calls - If you're using GPRS, an incoming call will terminate the data connection. Only 3G can operate data and voice simultaneously (and sometimes the data call still drops)
If all else fails, use the official WM6.0 ROM from the T-Mobile upgrade website (http://www.tm-phonedownloads.com/sa_vario.html), this will include the 1.50.00 Radio ROM and is guaranteed to work as soon as you've called your voicemail and sent an MMS to yourself. I've used CRC's 13.0 WM6.1 ROM with no issues, however.

I found some interesting crap on GPRS connection alive keeping in other places. What's the deal? Anybody have any ideas?
Having the T-Mobile unlimited ****ty GPRS, I really would like to keep it on. Of course that's conveniently not a feature part of the ROM. Rumor has it though that it is available on AT&T. Thoughts, suggestions, kitchen updates?

The T-Mobile WM2003 updates spoken about in this forum include the Always-On GPRS if you are willing to run beta software. I updated my US T-Mobile PPC with v4.00.10 with the new radio stack and it works great.
There is also a 4.00.16 ROM around, And I've read good things about it, but at this rate I'm not going to reinstall all of my apps until T-Mobile releases their final WM2003 update publically.
-Scott
I forgot to mention the one difference between WM2003 and the old AT&T ROM in respect to GPRS. There is no control panel applet to turn off Always-On GPRS, you have to actually turn off the phone to disconnect GPRS. It's not really a problem since phone calls will automatically temporarily disable GPRS and then re-enable it once the voice call is over.
Otherwise, the WM2003 implementation of GPRS is one of the better features of the ROM upgrade. The only other feature that I like more are the new SMS features:
- New buttons when you receive an SMS msg (Reply, Call, Delete, Close)
- SMS msgs will display the sender's name if it is in your contacts list
- Character counter in Inbox when typing SMS msgs
- Message Sent indicator from Inbox (previously only in PhoneBook)
- Quickfill of TO, CC, and BCC fields from contacts list (just start typing a name)
If you are a heavy GPRS and/or SMS user, and feel you are saavy enough to do the upgrade (or live with the consequences if it fails), then I would do it. I'm glad that I did. You can even make a custom T-Mobile WM2003 ROM from Jeff's ROM Kitchen (link found elsewhere in this forum).
Good Luck,
Scott
To turn off GPRS in WM 2003, hold down the red (hang up) phone button for a couple seconds...
I have 4.0016 but GPRS turns off
Whenver the phone goes to standby GPRS turns off. And yes, I do have all the latest greatest installed from the kitchen. Couldn't find any sort of settings to change it.
Completely flashed the ROM, used 4.00.16 T-Mobile ROM from Jeff's kitchen.
Thanks for all the feedback, now if I can just get this working!
I'm not sure if the ROM image is enough to enable Always-On GPRS, you may need to upgrade to one of the newer radio stacks too. When I upgraded my PPC to WM2003, I did the official T-Mobile 4.00.10 beta, which had the 6.24.00 radio stack.
A new radio stack, either the AT&T or the new TMo 6.24, is necessary for always-on GPRS. I have tried both stacks on the US TMo system and prefer the new TMo 6.24. GPRS will disconnect when the radio loses its connection with the cellular system, or when the device is placed on the cradle. It will reconnect automatically when removed from the cradle, or when the Inbox application attempts a timed check for new messages.
The older radio stacks do not support always-on connections.

My wife has a T-Mobile 6230 and my Jam can't receive the MMS she sends me.
It has a download button but never manages.
MMS sent from myself is fine.
Arcsoft version 2.5.0.28
Any ideas? Is this a known problem?
i had this problam after i upgraded the rom from I Mate -
all i had to do was install the T-mobile setting from my old rom...
Try it
If you are getting the file and can not read it.. maybe the picture is in a different format,
I think there is another reason for that. Unless you have not send at least one MMS by yourself, you are not registered as "MMS capable" by T-Mobile. So try to send on MMS from your Jam and have a retry if you can receive MMS then.
Cheers
Is it only MMS to yourself that don't work, or to other people's hansets? Have you tried the SIMs in other handsets to narrow down the possible problems. I work in a T-Mobile store and that's what I'd try to establish first. Do you have a local store, lots of staff have Compacts so should be able to help (I hope!)
Thanks for the replies BUT, the problem is that i can't RECEIVE from a T-Mobile Phone!!
My Jam is an Orange device and I can receive OK if I send it myself. However, a T-Mobile 6230 MMS is received but cannot be downloaded by my Orange JAM
That's why I suggested trying the SIMs in different handsets, to try and establish whether it's an issue just between your two phones or a bigger one between the two numbers.
For example, if you put your Orange SIM in another handset and can receive the MMS then it's an issue with your M500, if not the issue may be at the other end. You'll probably have to try a number of combinations to narrow down where the problem is (4 by my reckoning), but trial and error is often the best (if not quickest) way. It may not seem like sense but in my experience of trying to diagnose problems it's the best start. At least you know which part of the whole system you're looking at. Let us know if you give it a go.
I've got the exact same issue on my Qtek S100 running the 1.12 ROM (MMS ver 2.0.0.22). I'm not receiving MMS's from other people even if they're on Orange (same as me) but if I send an MMS to myself I receive it.
My phone has the keylock turned on, as with an SMS the phone screen comes on when someone sends an MMS but the phone doesn't download it. It doesn't seem to make a difference if I unlock my phone beforehand either :/
Bump, anyone else with this issue/a fix?
In the last 3 weeks since I got my Dopod 818pro, I've spent an obscene amount of time trying to setup the MMS system. I am using T-mobile USA with the most basic voice plan (no internet or wireless plan). T mobile keeps claiming I should be able to send picture messaging with the correct settings. I have read multiple forums (including this forum everyday), going through more settings than I can remember, exhausted T mobile's technical team, and all I get is the "Unable to send message. It will remain in your inbox" message. Even the tech team from tmobile is suggesting that I have a faulty system. So before I give up and deem this unit faulty, maybe someone here can tell me what I'm doing wrong or give suggestions as to a step by step setup, I will be forever grateful. Here's what I've tried:
- I tried the whole wap.voicestream.com setting in "connections", then using the "216.155.165.50 then http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms" as suggested by t mobile - still doesn't work.
- What I have been successful in getting is text messages, but I assume that's not even in the same category as MMS. In fact, I had someone try to send pics to me, and didn't get it at all.
So my questions are:
1) Is anyone using a port other than 9201 for MMS?
2) Is there any settings in this Asian origin phone that may interfere with it working in the US?
3) My Arcsoft MMS Composer version is 3.xx something, but I've seen other WM5 units (like the Apache) that carries a 2.xx version. Is there any incompatibility issue with 3.xx and WM5 that anyone knows of? If so, does anyone know where I can get an older version of MMS Composer? (I think even the t mobile tech people said they're only familiar with 2.xx version)
4) Which arcsoft MMS composer version does the Jamin have (I assume it should be identical to my dopod 818pro, but worth asking.
5) Should I just pay for the internet plan to see if there's an account issue, and not a software/hardware issue?
6) If the phone and txt messages are fine, should I assume it's not a hardware issue, but rather a WM5/software problem?
7) If anyone has a cab file for TMobile USA or direct me to one I'll appreciate it. (I did do a search on this, but the link directed me to a UK setting cab. file, not a US one).
8) There's an icon in the Settings/Connections screen. Other han the Connections icon, there is a GPRS Setting icon. When I click on it, it allows me to choose PAP authentication or CHAP authenication. Does anyone know which should be checked for T mobile in the US? (none of the tmobile techs know what this is).
9) Finally, has anyone been successful using a dopod 818pro (jamin for that matter), to send mms through t mobile USA. Am I alone here?
I want to thank you for any input whatsoever. I want to try everything before I send this back for exchange.
I have a JAMin on TMO USA. The ARC Soft composer version is 3.0.7.19. The JAMin is the first iMate device that has had flawless MMS operation for me. Other devices have been iffy at best. And it definitely isn't a network issue since MMS on my Treo 650 was always perfect. I guess I don't see how you can even do MMS without a data plan since you need to access the internet at the wap.voicestream.com web site. I didn't know that one could do that with just a voice plan. If that is OK then I would be sure that your MMS is using the wap connection not the GPRS connection based on internet2.voicestream.com.
Anyway below are my TMO USA GPRS/MMS Settings which work on the JAMin. If these don't work I would definitely request a new device.

Thanks so much for responding. I tried all your steps to a tee (BTW, very thorough instructions, much more so than TMo techs). Still doesn't work. My MMS composer version is 3.0.7.17 vs your 19. You don't suppose that much was upgraded b/w these versions, do you? How did you get these settings anyway? Did Tmobile send it to you, or did you set it up yourself. BTW, do you have the 19.99 plan or the 29.99 plan? I'm just trying to figure it if I should just shell out money for the internet plan just to try out the MMS capability. Damn, really don't want to send this back to Expansys.
I have had the $19.99 unlimited data plan for quite a while now and I don't know anything about the $29.99 plan. These settings are those that I have always used on PPCs such as the Torq 100, PDA2K, JAM, KJAM and now the JAMin and came from trial and error mostly with suggestions from others on here and other forums. I am sure that they are correct.
I really don't use MMS that much and since I have had so much trouble in the past with it trying to send pictures I usually just send them via email attachments using Messaging. That always works and is also free.
I really think that your problem is not having a data plan and I am surprised that the TMO techs didn't mention that. Look at the MMS connection settings - you need to access the Cellular Line (GPRS) - this is a data conection, not voice, and as I said before you need to access the wap web site on the interne for MMS. You can always try the data plan for a day or so and cancel it if it doesn't work but I think that is your problem. I would have all the GPRS settings in place and then have a TMO CSR activate the data plan. You can then test it immediately while the CSR is still on the line by running Pocket Explorer and accessing a web site. If that works then I would try MMS again.
I also hate to send stuff back so hopefully it will work with a data plan,
Frank
I think getting the internet plan is the next step before I send it back. The way the tech explained it to me about using the phone line to do MMS. He said that the setting they gave us (servelets/mms, etc) is kind of a backdoor to the GPRS. Some techs did claim they were successful setting it up the Jasjar (maybe they all neglected to note what kind of plan all these wm5 users have). Does your phone have that GPRS authentication thing? Still can't figure out what it is.
Mine is set to PAP by default. Maybe the techs are right about not needing a data plan. I have just always had one when using MMS so haven't tried it without one. I pay for each individual MMS message - $.10 each I think.

I did change WAP ver. from 2.0 to 1.2 to make it work.
And also make sure your MMS connects to wap.voicestream.com not internet2.voicestream.com nor internet3.voicestream.com
I have MMS working on T-mobile w/iMate XDA 2, Dopod 818, iPaq 6515, and Dopod 818 Pro.
Staroip, which T mobile plan do you have? Are you paying anything extra other than the voiceplan?
I have family plan w/ 4 lines. Currently, the line my Dopod 818 pro uses has $19.99 unlimited GPRS (which is not offered anymore). T-mobile has "Total Internet Access" for $29.99 as add-on that comes with unlimiter GPRS/Edge and HotSpot.
My old dopod 818 (aka iMate JAM) is on the line w/o any data plan add-on now but used to have $19.99 unlimited VPN plan. MMS is working fine on those device now.
Have you done the trick for SD card problem, such as not allowing ext-rom installation? Usually, there is MMS patch cab need to be installed in order for MMS to be working.
BTW, on my connection "wap.voicestream.com", I don't use proxy setting.
Is your Dopod 818 pro WWE version or TC version?
Now you're scarying me about the Jam being able to do MMS without any plans. I did do the Sd card thing, but I did launch the MMS cab file. Either way, this wasn't working even before I hard resetted and excluded the ext rom2. This is the WWE version. You think it makes a difference? Now I really have to talk to T mobile soon.
Most camera phones (not PDA) can use MMS w/o data plan.
Here is T-Mobile Wireless Data Configurator
http://tmobileus.wdsglobal.com/phon...aptchaEnabled=true&manufacturerId=41&phoneId=
W/O a data plan, your wap.voicestream.com is still open for MMS even though you cannot browse web sites.
You may find some answers there.

I think I'm going to give up now. I just sign up for the internet plan for 29.99. I was able to surf the web. But guess what, still can't do MMS. Almost hilarious. BTW, you don't think I'm doing something stupid like not composing the MMS message correctly, do you? I just launch MMS, create new, attach a picture, then hit send, right? The send address is always the 10 digit phone number, including area code, right? No country code?
The MMS send address can also be an email address - try that. If not, I don't know what else to suggest. As I told you before MS was always flaky for me on everything expect the Treo 650 and JAMin. Sometimes it would appear to work and never show up at the destination. Or take several hours to show up. Sometimes on receive a message would appear to download successfully but I could never display it. These are also problems reported by others. I always felt lucky when it did work and none of us ever knew what was wrong - not settings or network so we had to conclude that the ArcSoft MMS client must be glitchy.

OK, here's the latest update. (I'm spending way too much time on this). As a last attempt, I put my sims card into an old sony erricson T68i phone. I was able to send messages, but when I tried to download the picture, it says some error with the network. So I speculated that it may be the SIMS card afterall. I called up tmobile, and they said some of their older SIMS card may not know how to handle MMS. She suggested I go to the Tmobile store to get a new card. Went there, tmobile gave me a free new card, now I'm able to receive pic messages (which I'm pretty sure I was never able to do with the old SIMS), but I still can't send them out. The kicker is, if I pop the sims card into the t68i, I'm able to create and send messages, and the message even goes into the t68i's inbox, but I still can't download it. Then if I take the same card, put it in my dopod, now the dopod can download and view it. WTF? Should I just send it back? This is too frustrating.
For those who tried to help me, here's the latest update. After trying everything with no success, I was about to send it back to expansys, so I figured I'll try it one more time after I hard reset the device. I plugged the settings in, sent the pic... Guess what, IT WORKED. I don't have the slightest clue as to why. Don't know if the reset reconfigured the SIMS, whatever it is, it worked (even after I restored my backup (so I don't think it was a software incompatibility issue either). All I know is, now I'm ecstatic. All I need to do now is figure out what I'm going to do with picture messaging now that I have it. Again, thank you so much for those of you who tried to help. This is the greatest forum.
Sup,
I recently installed OTP 7.7 on my Wing.Works great EXCEPT I havent been able to receive any picture msgs via text....yeah,huh!Flashed back to WM 6 and pics came through fine.Any resolve for this issue? Thanks in advance.
I don't know if it's the same problem, but when I flashed to OpenTouch 7.7 (t-mobile carrier) It wouldn't let me send picture messages. I fixed it by doing two things:
I went to Start- Settings- Connections (tab)- Network Wizard and changed my carrier and country to the ones I have (US, T-Mobile).
You can try to send and receive picture messages after that, it may or may not work, I didn't try. If it doesn't work try the next thing:
Then i went to Start- Settings- Connections (tab)- Connections- Advanced (tab)- Select Networks and I changed my default internet connection to T-Mobile MMS since i don't own a data plan, but I do own an unlimited SMS/MMS plan.
Good luck!
is arcsoftmms cab installed? I've never used that rom so i dont know if mms was cooked in.
All you need to do is what apreichner said first, run the network wizard because OTP 7.7 is set to default AT&T... change it to tmobile and restart
I have recently flashed an Orange SF with the JJ9 2.2 android custom ROM.
Have re-inserted the original (PAYG) orange sim, and checked the obvious stuff (WAP browsing, texts, MMS, voicemail, GPS, e-mails etc) were all OK.
Downloaded some apps from the marketplace - no problem.
I then swapped out the orange sim for for a (PAYG) 3 UK sim, and repeated the checks.
All was OK, except that SF CANNOT now receive voice calls from other mobiles but CAN can receive voice calls from landlines.
Swapped out the 3 UK sim for a (PAYG) 02 sim, and got exactly the same result (no voice calls received from mobiles)
any ideas what I might try to solve this problem?
TIA
Flashed mine with the de-orangenated ROM and used my Virgin Mobile SIM with it, no issues with voice calls whatsoever. I suggest the following:
- Flash to stock or de-orangenated (better start),
- Check your O2 SIM works as expected,
- Flash to JJ,
- check O2 SIM works as expected,
If not then one of JJ tweaks produce the issue and you should just change ROM as it is no longer in development (efforts are now pushed on Swedish Spring ROM which requires going Gen2).
@gloc33
thanks for that info
after fiddlimg around deleting and re-installing settings amongst the various sims, I somehow managed to get rid of this glitch.
I take your point re Swedish Spring - I'll give it a go

No, Swedish Spring does not require this.
