WM 6.5 On The Touch HD? - Touch HD General

Is it likely we will see the newly announced 6.5 as an update for the HD at any point?

Ballmer confirmed it exists today. Sources close to microsoft say RTM may go in the next month and it looks like this will see a Q1 release.
I would suggest it will be highly likely that the Touch will get an official Rom update. The HTC Rom update will be several months down the track of course
However, failing an official ROM update I would bet my soon to arrive Touch that there is a cooked ROM of the update. So eitherway you will be covered.

Thanks for that information.
As an aside how do software updates work on WM devices, I assume it's not like the update service used by S60 devices?

When you update your ROM, everything gets wiped so you have to put everything you want to keep (eg program config files, Word docs, pictures, videos, etc) on another storage medium.
Then connect your device using ActiveSync or Mobile Device Center and run the update. It'll then flash your device in about 5-10 mins.

Is the update flashed directly onto the devices ROM as with S60 by the update service?

Any pointers on where to get one of these cooked roms? HTC aren't planning to roll this out for those that have an HD. :-(

erm, where have you looked?
did you try the Rom developers forum just under this one?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=453

Thank you for the head-s up. It took a lot of patience searching among this forum to get to it until you posted the link. I'm not surprised how popular these roms are, HTCs support isn't up to much.
There are a lot of allegedly supported features on that device that aren't supported or don't work. BT Pan, OBEX FTP to name but a couple...I'm not a huge Windows CE developer, but I'm working on it.

Why do people keep upgrading ROMS?

I know I am going to cause some trouble by asking this but why?
On taking my new Orange SPV M600 out of the box, I have to agree a bit sluggish, but this was mainly due to Windows.
After a little tweaking with the registry and some third party software it is now flying.
I originally thought that putting third party software over the top of the system would slow it even more, but know, the opposite was true. Using the standard windows task bar and start menu was dreadful. I tried a number of third party softwares such as True Toolbar, Handyswitcher etc, finally settling on Wisbar deluxe.
Everything now opens as soon as it is selected no nasty lag like windows. With some skinning and removal of Customised Today the phone looks great and is performing great. That is apart from my wired hands free. I can now answer and close calls with the button, but it does not activate voice dial when pressed, so I can't dial out hands free. All prevoius phones, Nokia and SE did this no problem, so why not this phone?
Anyway, back to the point of ROMS, why keep flashing?
I just got me one of those SPV M600 things and its not that slow, but I havent added anything else to it yet. Would you care to elaborate on "registry tweaks"? Im new to XDA/phones and havent started messing about yet.
I can not remember all of the tweaks I used, but there is a big section somewhere in here listing them. I have them somewhere on the computer but my filing is a mess and I can't remember what I called the text file or where I put it.
Basically the tweaks are just simple things like increasing cache size for fonts, programs etc. Moving file storage off main memory to SD card, disabling and enabling etc. It is claimed by doing this that the system will speed up a little. I am not sure if any of these actually did anything or if it is just down to Wisbar. All I can say is that when I click on a program it fires up straight away, before it could take a second or two.

Actually, the rule about flashing is: If it's not broken don't fix it.
People upgrade because they want to get rid of bugs or add features like AKU 2.0 that includes push mail and some other stuff.
Also some brands are better that others in some ways, and worse in other ways. There are several ROMs for the Prophet: Dopod, i-mate, Qtek, Orange. Finally some people cook their own ROMs throwing out useless stuff and adding apps they 'must have'.
All in all if you are pleased with your phone there is no need to change the ROM. When I got my Jamin it had the i-mate 1.xx ROM so I upgraded to 2.13 to get the AKU 2.0 goodies.
I always belive the latest is the greatest, even if its not. I still run the latest. While the release notes say "Added this, fixed that" they also contain a lot of fixes and changes not documented.
Hi all.
Thats actually a very good question. From my experience you dont really need to change anything. Maybe as you said some registry tweaking or some basic settings. However as someone already said, the golden rule should be if it is not broken dont try to fix it.
On the other hand you might want to change things with no reason, just because you can.. and I have to admit that it is hard not to do. Then you have to make sure that you know what you are doing cause otherwise you might end up spending your day in forums try to fix whatever you &^%$ up..
Take care.
Thanks for the replies.
I have to admit, when I first got the phone I started tweaking, then I found this forum and others. Once I discovered unlocking and flashing ROMS, I was very close to doing it. Then I remembered what I used to be like on my PC. With old systems like Win ME, I used to spend about 70% of my time tweaking and fixing, and only 30% actually using the damn thing. Not what I want out of a phone.
Just by messing around with skins, I have already managed to lose my phone dialer all together, I was left with a blank screen, so I had a phone that could not phone. I have it nicely skinned and running now, but I was never able to get the Orange dialer back.
Guess the only time I will flash my ROM is when there is a genuine update and it is covered by warranty, that way if the ROM is bad, Orange can give me another phone.
Thanks
I look at it same way as i look at windows.
My windows isn't broke but I always use Windows Update.
Why do YOU update windows, if you do at all. I guess im not sure if this is advisable, but that's just the way i do it.
Regarding upgrading ROM, MOST of the time, it makes the device faster and adds more features ( i never install extended ROM ) so I always upgrade when there is a new one.
I've downgraded ONCE. And only the RADIO because 1.11 didn't agree with my device.
There are ways to Backup the device, change to a different BRAND/VERISON of ROM then restore the backup. This makes changing ROM very easy.
Anyway, I have nothing better to do with my time so i upgrade whenever a new ROM comes out.
Sorry to but in again but I simply must disagree with the Windows update analogy.
I have my PC set to auto update as well, but Windows XP runs updates in the background and doesn't delete you data in the process.
ROM upgrade means HARD RESET, and unless you have a good backup a long restore process.
Also there is the danger of communication / power interrupt during the flashing and a bricked device as a result.
Finlay, like with your radio ROM, some OS updates have new bugs as well as fixes for the old.
But I do wish it was as simple as updating windows - then I would say, update away, couldn't hurt.
My analogy was based only on the reason for updating, not the process itself that you are stating.
What I mean is if your windows works, why update?.... This thinking... Not the "ritual"...
Sorry i did not explain that clearly. The guy just asked why update if you are content with what you have.... It has nothing to do with "I would update only if the process were simpler" like what you stated.
Sorry for the misunderstanding
I upgrade because I can cook my own ROM with better application suite

Because it's full of holes and most of the updates are plugging them.
I think the main point is you dont have to upgrade, you can if you want, its a matter of choice.
I like to always update, some like to keep the same and have never hard reset in their life. Im on my 9th this week :S but it is a new device and im still figuring it all out.

Hmm, then i guess your advice to NewSPV is to upgrade.
Me too, as i said in earlier post, i will always upgrade to the newest ROM, then just downgrade if i don't like the changes. Unfortunately it isn't as easy to downgrade from Windows SP2 hehehe

I was talking about Windows, not WM5.
My phone came shipped with an AKU2 rom and it's fine - after a little tweaking. I'm not going to risk bricking my pride and joy with a rom upgrade - as so many people have done already on this forum.
Can anyone name some good places to read about how to flash your device with a new ROM?
Also, I was wondering about what the "extended ROM" is. Is it basically partitioning part of your storage card for use as "internal memory" ?
Thanks for the info guys!

Look at the top left of this very page and you will see a link to the wiki section of this site. How to flash is in there.
The extended rom is where the operator adds thier own customisations (over and above what M$ provide) to the device, for example Orange and O2 add their own options in there and they install when the device is powered up for the first time or when it's hard reset. If you get access to the extended rom (again look in the wiki) you can manipulate what gets installed and if you're really clever, add some of your own stuff.
Don't ask me how to do these things as I have not tried myself, the risk of bricking the device is too great for my liking.
cool, thanks paul

Actually, it is virtually impossible to brick your device by manipulating the contents of the extended ROM. It is only accessed once, during first boot, and event that can be avoided by quickly soft resetting the device.
Basically it acts exactly like "file store" used to on WM 2003 devices, the only difference being it is hidden so ordinary users won't get rid of the operator junk.
In my case it was very nice of i-mate to provide various goodies there like voice dial (should be in ROM) anti virus (not only useless but damaging crap) Skype (could have just downloaded from their site, but nice thought) and backgammon (toys are always welcome).
But now ofter the initial installation it makes all the sense in the world to save these cabs (9MB~) to my PC and have extra 10 MB storage on the device.

Has Anyone Tried the new Update from SEUS?

As some of you may know, SEUS has finally put up the R2A firmware for the X1. Someone from another forums said that the new official firmware is newer and has more features than the one that we can find in the ROM development section for R2A UK. Does anyone know the actual differences and whether or not it's worth the time to update?
its in the rom development section!
Norti has even has a list of what files have changed..
However I've been having a look and there's a huge amount of new files in the SYS that weren't in the last build.. (it looks like the "OS" folder wasn't populated in the "08" build).
Ive not flashed yet.
I'm sorry, but after looking for a few hours, I still cannot find the actual post. Is it possible that you can link me?
Thanks in advance.
Edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3357724&postcount=721
If you're referring to that post, I have no idea what it means really.
I have NO idea how much or how little has changed but I have to give the new software a resounding HELL YEAH!
I don't see any different functionality yet. BUT........ my Xperia is AS fast after 4 hours on the Sony download as it was after a week WITH the R2A_UK and Xperiatweak memory tweak. The panel selection is super fast and access to menus as well as their selection is INSTANT!
It ran great on the R2A_UK downloaded off the boards but my Xperia is running like I expected it to run out of the box. I have loaded gtrags icons/taskabar, youtube+panel, facebook, advanced config, Tom Tom7.9 and run the hell out of all the programs. I have intentionally left all programs running in the background instead of closing and installed no memory tweaks at all.
With EVERYTHING I can run at one time going (including blue tooth and wifi AND enterprise push) I have had no lock ups. It slows down on video playback of course but this is the first load where I haven't had to poke the little stylus in it's favorite hole for a soft reset as soon as I start flogging it so soon after a fresh rom.
Be warned that the reload took 30 min for my Xperia to load from sony. I don't know why it took so long but it did.
Bottom line, what ever changes were made were surely small, but it really helped my unit run well. I may be only do to cache not having to catch up as much as with the previous two revs I have had.
So it is worth the trouble of updating?
Edit: Or should I wait for DuttyThroy's ROM.. hm...
I tried the SE-US for me swedish X1 and it told me I already had the latest FW. Is this new edition only for english devices?
Someone has posted an alarming thread, they said they updated to Rom2, through SE Update service, and the new ROM has no mobile office.
Please tell me they are wrong and mistaken
Is this the same update that was on emma a couple weeks ago?
About this mobile office thing:
it should be under START Menu, right after Today! Another way to test if office if there, open a doc in the phone...duh!

So you would suggest flashing to R2A010 from R2A008 then?
I would say yes, as I have seen a nice improvement over 8.
It has been suggested that maybe my 8 load wasn't a clean load and the 10 loaded directly from Sony was. I don't know, but I have seen a very nice improvement in the overall speed of function and video.
One funny thing is that when I tried the xperiatweak memory tweak, my phone actually slowed down a bit. Huh? I wonder why this is.

The response here for the new firmware over SEUS seems good, will update mine after I get back my phone for the casing replacement.
I have tried the SEUS and it tells me no update is available, this is for a UK O2 phone. Should I be able to update this?
Thanks

The one on SEUS for UK just now is for generic/not network locked phones. I'd imagine the O2 version will be online later this week or next at the latest.

Yup, go into the Xperia Rom forum and you'll find it there. It's very simple to do - dl the .exe file, extract it to get the image file, rename the file (details are in the forum, I forget), stick it on your micro SD card, restart the phone whilst holding volume down and power. It should then kick in automagically!

I noticed that this update appeared on Zune. Think I'll wait till some of the experts here give us advice if this can be applied to the WP7 on the HD2
thats why i didnt install update afraid it might jack up my hd2.wait and see what the pros do
send a report to microsoft saying your hd2 cant update
lol, someone should try and use the update for there hd2 and tell us how it goes,
believe it or not, i wouldn't be surprised if some hd2's update good and some don't.
we'll let the dev's make a new rom for this than.

yea i just connected my phone and the update popped up, i'll give it a try and post back up with what it says.
Same thing here with DFT build for HD2, registry error and it backed out.
lol Guys, why would the update work, as its meant for an HD7, not a reg hacked HD2.??? THe hardware specs are not the same so the drivers will have been changed/modded so it just aint gonna happen.
Dont bother trying to apply the update, we'll have to all wait until the new rom is dumped and re-hacked.
You will also know that the new rom will block chevron unlocking, although schaps is on the case, google for more info

Some people are just born dumb.
i hate to say i told you so but i cant resist.
I did say that there would be a way for MS to identify our HD2s, there will be some common reg entry or file in the original DFT release that they have scanned for and i got slated for it. oh well, going to have to wait for a updated ROM my thinks, and based on the fact that this update only changes the way in which our phones get updated i dont think there is any point in the slightest in installing this.

I'm see no reason why Microsoft wouldn't be able read your phone's IMEI before updating. It's a more reliable model identifier than anything in the registry, and will instantly tell them they're dealing with a HD2.
Indeed, not much point in trying to apply this update. At best, you gain very little (no new features). At worst, you're going to have to reflash.

Trying Dual boot right now still with an old ROM or wait until NoDo gets finally released.
Anyway, thumbs up for their great work!
Great! Looking forward to testing this!
I've got WP7 running all the time and I love it.
with bated breath I await this update.
Never mind the update, what we need is an updater, Zune can do it so its possible, just need to fine out exactly what it does / how it does it!
^^^^^^^^ ..
True, because no matter what DFT brought us today, they won't be supporting the HD2 (especially WP7 on it) forever .
But at the meantime, who cares !!!
WE HAVE NODO
I vote the notion of having ability to update our beloved HD2 using Zune itself... This way we have more secure path for the future upgrades but I don't know how hard this could be?
but so far, DFT is keeping HD2 alive and mango is far far away...
Thanks DFT

well as far as i can tell, and not having a native WP7 device means thats not very much, the HD2 has two potential issues, firstly, and most obviously, Zune apparently detects either a reg entry or a system file difference that identifies the HD2 as an HD2
secondly, when the device does its reboot thing before atempting a backup Windows 7 detects and installes a LEO device driver.
now it does the second thing even when you use a windows system that has never had a LEO attached, so something during the restart/flash screen is shouting LEO
now the question is, is Zune really detecting a reg entry / file issue, or is it the LEO device driver....
whats your thoughts?
it could of course be both, what would be handy is a complete reg dump of a HD2 and the WP7 device our ROM comes from to see if there is any likely differences that may be the reason.
likewise it would be handy to get ahold of the driver that is installed for the WP7 device our ROM comes from when it goes in to updating mode, could it be as simple as messing about with some hardware IDs and system driver files on the PC? doubt it, but good as place as any to start

HTC 7 Trophy running mango

Today I got the invitation to install mango on my trophy, have any one installed mango and any trouble with the beta.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Hello,
Yes i already installed MAngo on Trophy and it works perfect, i have it from 3 days and its run awesome, very fast and stable..
Regards
One of the best upgrades I have made to my phone so far, although it took me 4 tries until I finally had mango unlocked XD.
Messenger integration with the phone is pretty nice (although buggy sometimes)
Mango is the bizniss! I had to tinker with my actual location to get access to services though. Live tiles for a lot of apps, stay away from the 3g if you're on prepaid.
I will also agree, Mango is well worth the upgrade, I have it on my Verizon HTC Trophy. Runs perfect and all the new features are worth it.
Doesnt even feel like a beta, perfect!

If you do need to download the game again, then the marketplace will recognise the previous purchase.
The applications did remain after the update, but I official updated the phone to mango.

Really ? Have you not looked or are you just being rude ? The info on this has been out on the net over a week now how to install this on a non-dev phone. You don't even need to unlock your phone.
This info is ALL over this site, never mind the big Win phone 7 sites...(check the WP7 areas on this site)
Read all the details here...
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/2123450-post27.html
After reading that you could be installing it in 5 min, but, the whole process takes about 2-3 hours (so plan on not using your phone in that window)
I wrote the PPCgeeks page...btw it works awsome on the HTC Trophy.

It is pretty awsome but, keep in mind, it is a beta (there will be bugs) and make sure you keep your backup, you might need to restore back before you go to the final version. Your right, no Adobe flash but, you can install custom ring tones.

Custom Ringtones
1. Copy MP3 or WMA to Zune Collection. Choose Edit, and type in manually under Genre "Ringtone". The song must be less than 40 seconds and smaller than 1MB.
2. Go to Settings -> Ringtones + Sounds, tap Ringtone. Your custom ringtone will appear under a new tree called "Custom", above "Windows Phone"
Note that it is identified by the filename, rather than the track title.
Also, you can tap and HOLD a ringtone, and Delete will be offered (but only on the Custom ones; preloaded ones grey out delete).
