I don't mean to... But.... If someone has your device and sees no buttons and a large screen. They are probably gonna touch it. And chances are they will see the icons and press them... :S

Sounds like someone got caught by their significant other talking to someone they weren't supposed to be talking to. I suggest deleting those emails/texts that you are looking to keep secret... not that I am encouraging that kind of behavior to begin with.

Well didn't wanna go that deep - Although my original intention was to imply you aren't going to achieve secrecy just through an auto back to home tab....
So basically you have no real answer right?
Your response is worthless.
How does the home button help me?
If I am on the programs tab and hit the 'Display Switch' icon that installs when you use PS ShutXP, it shuts the device, but when you turn it back on, it brings you right back to the program menu.
So how can I use the home button? The device screen is off. When I turn it back on, then I have to press the home button? That makes no sense.
There should be a way where if you are on a tab, like the weather tab, and nothing is presed for 10 seconds, it brings you back to the home screen.
I dont mean to come across so sarcastic, but since you think you had the perfect response to the original question, I had no choice.

No where did I say I had the perfect response.
Yes it could be useful in the scenario you are stating.
However I clearly said that you would not achieve secrecy from emails or messages that you want no one else to see. An auto back to the home tab - I don't really see this as a valid solution to keep unwanted eyes from your phone.
But in the scenarios you stated, I'd gladly use it. There have been many a time I have hit the power button on the programs tab and turned it back on to find the programs tab again - then slid my finger to the home tab.
But aren't we just being a bit lazy at the end of the day ?
I'm not sure but I think when you use the default WM lock behavior, the screen goes back to today screen when it's locked

Hope you don't listen to music through TF3D... it would be constantly switching back to the home screen. If you were doing something like driving it would just add an extra step that would make you take your eyes off the road to change tracks.
"There should be a way" sounds a bit like a demand. Are there other features that the people from this forum SHOULD make for your phone? Remember you are asking for help. No one is entitled to other people's modifications. We are lucky enough that there are so many nice people here that are willing to help. Just like the help that was being offered by stating that the home button would do what you wanted. Granted he misuderstood what you wanted but he very well could have just misunderstood and then decided not to take time to try and answer you.

thank you all for your nonanswers and cooprate.
I don't have anything to say
but iam satisfied that the lonely and final solution for all your PPC use which Mr.Beherrschen suggested .
examples :
- if you think to secure your personal data dont look for locking app. simply delete these data.
- if you want to save power for your device simply turn it off.
- if you want your manila auto go back to home tab simply delete all other tabs.- if you can - or sell you diamond as i will do .
and much much more .

I saw this idea in another thread that I don't currently remember, and I thought I could do it.
Kontoor fades out the screen, suspends the device, and when it is resumed, the screen comes in fading.
The zipped EXE file is attached below. You're supposed to place it somewhere into internal memory and put a shortcut to it to \Windows and name it "Short_Power.lnk", but it doesn't work on my device and Kontoor doesn't run. I'm seeking help for that! Many thanks.
Note that the attached EXE file is a test version.
Also, note that there may be other problems or improveable areas:
- starting the program 2 times will most probably wreck havoc (or pressing the power button 2 times , if it works for you)
- most probably, will not work when in games and other framebuffer-apps
- taskbar changes to "Start" before fading, if nothing changes it's better
- sluggish PDA's (like the HTC Universal I have) may experience added slowdown during resume
- ****ty PDA's (like the HTC Universal ) flash a brief white screen when resuming... it's a bit anti-aesthetic, and I can't control that
many thanks for you audience

I tried it on my Prophet and Kaiser on prophet it does nothing at all. on kaiser it fades out nicely and I like it but when I press to turn screen on it fades out again. having real dificulties turning my screen back on. but the fading looks cool and now I have a reason to flash my next test rom
The exe works fine on my Sprint Vogue. I don't have a Short_Power.lnk in my Windows dir so when I copied it over, it did nothing. Any other way to set this app to run when the power button is pressed?

Not all devices use the "short_power.lnk" method. I think newer devices like the Kaiser do, but older devices such as the universal and the Prophet have a different method. I shall look into the registry and see if it links from there.

hmmm. it is somehow like that, but not fading, i mean, maybe fading maybe a feature, but it's not the real function. The idea was on the backlight, when you didn't touch your device (it is power on) for a several seconds, it fades out or dims and get to normal when you touches it again.
Battery Drain?
I try this on my HTC Touch Cruise. It works perfect, but i think my battery is draining faster. Anyone else who had the some problem?
I think it goes not in really standby mode and the screen is only going blank.
I will test it over night again.

Maybe a mortscript could be written that detects any kind of usage (or lack of usage) and then executes this program after a set time.

That could be done, but I don't think it would work just right on every PDA... most PDA have different screen backlight settings, some have more light steps, some only 3 settings.... and I think it would stress the light hardware....

you're right, the app just turns off the screen but doesn't go on standby mode right away, however, it should still go on automatic standby mode (after 30 seconds for me) if you have configured it on your power settings
if you are using spb mobile shell and have configured to show Now screen when device wakes up, you'll notice if you use this app to turn off the screen and you press power button to wake up your device right away, spb gives a sign that it didn't came from standby mode, it shows the last screen you've left.. just my observation, i could be wrong though
Hi,
Is it possible to have the time and missed calls/messages information when the backlight is off with Xperia? I mean just like it is on usual mobile phones like SE W850i or the others..
Otherwise, it's a bit of a burden to switch on/off the backlight just to check if I have missed calls instead of taking a second of glance to the screen..

I guess the best way would be to set the LED's to flash until noticed.. Then you will know if you have an sms or missed call.

thanks for the advice.
but is there anyone who could kindly answer the question I asked?
Dont think so - from what I understood, when you press upper button then WM61 goes to some kind of sleep mode, leaving only basic functions like mobile and some others running, saving as much power as possible. Including disabled display. If you want to see something on screen, then you have to keep it turned on, which equals increased power consumption.
I haven't got the manual to hand but surely it there is a section on power-saving/backlight settings?!?
Go to settings>system>power>advanced>On Battery Power and untick turn off device is not used for...
Beware that the screen is one of the major battery drains...

Then you are out of luck. The x1 does not do this.
Unless someone knows of/writes an app to do this.
As was said above, the best other option would be to set the 4 corner LEDs to flash indefinately till you notice them.
Or, buy a different phone.
Sadly the industry is not giving out the right info with Winmo "phones".
They are a PDA first, with a phone fitted in as a second thought. Not the other way around. So, they still lack many base features from "simpler" phones.

I'm not sure what you're looking for here -
1) Keeping the screen on but the backlight off, so that you can glance at the screen and see the time/your notifications - per your first post
2) Having a quickview screen with a big clock and your notifications, when your phone is on standby, per the post I have quoted.
3) both
I've already given you an answer for 1). For 2) have you tried using S2U2?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=412418
it's both I am looking for. but as was put forward before, it looks it is not possible at the moment.
the pdas unfortunately miss some simple phone features; it will take some time to get used to it...
The answer is very easy:
If you have only one display as a PPC has, you need the backlight on to see something.
It is no problem to create the information you want with 3rd party software as WAD2 or PhoneAlarm. But then you have to keep the backlight on and this takes a lot of power.
Easier it is if you only want the screen turning on if a new sms/email/mms/appointment or other thing ist coming. If you use PhoneAlarm for example, you can give the settings to turn on the screen at this alarms. Then the screen turns on, if an alarm arrives (for a new SMS/MMS/EMail or Appointment or whatever) and you can see it. This needs power too.
With this you cannot see the time during 24 h...
What I do is to tell PhoneAlarm to give a sound for a new SMS/Email/MMS but not to turn on the screen. Then I know, when I want to turn the screen on and can see what happend.
And if I want to see the time I just turn on the screen for a short look. At the screenie you see one of the pages with WAD2 and PhoneAlarm in the top, I made for my daily use...

So is the solution not to do both things I suggested?
Ive seen this happen a couple of times, doesnt really bother me, but i just want to know if anybody has experienced this as well. Most of the time its the right side up....but every now and then i get this.....
randomly when im texting the picture icon where the contacts picture should be is upside down. I havent put custom pictures so im just using the stock android picture that the phone has for all my contacts.

Ill put some custom pictures on my favorite contacts to see if it continues even with custom pictures. And again this happens randomly when im typing a text message. So i dont know how to recreate it, i just happens....

I think it is a cool little touch, just like when your batter is charged and you run the code to check it status in adb, it gives back some goofy message like "your android device is charged and ready for a new adventure!"

I will try and find the post, should have saved it... but someone in talking about rooting either their N1 or G1 or something pointed out that if your battery is fully charged, and you run a battery status command(I think adb) it gave a read out of the stats, then if 100% charged, said "your android device is ready for a new adventure" or something to that affect... they also pointed out funny things like this are all over.
Linux seems to full of quirky weirdness like that, I recall CUPS had a message about your printer being on fire

What happens if you delete it, press home, then come back? I think it is possible it is "showing" because it takes some time to not just delete the image, but also clear the cache of the image.
Try this, delete the one time, then hit home, then come back and see if it is still there.

Perhaps this is just an instance of "touchscreen calibration issues". In other words, the "up event" for your finger press ends up triggering an inch or two below where your finger touched and so it hits the menu softkey instead.
I get this with the keyboard a lot. I'm typing away and suddenly the keyboard goes away like it does when I hit a soft key. It seems to affect some phones more than others and some people's tapping styles more than others. Try making sure your finger lifts straight up vertically rather than on a diagonal towards the direction of the soft keys.
(With respect to why you are able to delete things more easily in other apps - perhaps because the screen is landscape and/or the control to confirm the deletion is more isolated than when you do what you are doing in the video?)
If you watch the video, though, the delete button line itself highlights... I am not sure what the cause is, probably an issue with the base ROM on his phone? Maybe a bad factory flash of sorts... it forgot a 0 at an odd spot that causes it to take three deletes to delete it from the gallery... not sure.

I've had problems where one button highlights and it looks like I successfully pressed it, but just before the menu goes away another button below it highlights ever so briefly. If you didn't see the other button highlight you would have sworn it registered the first button normally.
Given that the soft-keys don't highlight when you select them, if they are the ones that eventually register the touch then you wouldn't see anything different than what happens in that video...
Yeah i thought it was the screen clicking in the different places other than where i put my finger. but doesnt seem like the case. i hit the confirm delete and it hightlighted it and i ddint see any other icons highlighted after i press that....so i dont think it was that. although i did consider that at first.

Realistically, I don't think an onscreen back button would be a very easy app to code.
It would have to show over every screen, so a stationary widget wouldn't suffice, and worse yet, it would have to show over every app, which would be even tougher.
Consider that there are like a hundred alarm clock apps in the market, and maybe four of them work properly all the time, and of those four, three of them probably use so much system resources that they slow your phone down and drain the battery.
Maybe an exaggeration, but theres alot of truth in it.
We would all probably be better off buying a couple spare sets of hard keys, and somebody write a real good tut on how to replace them, than to hold our breath for an onscreen back button
To answer the original poster's question:
Well.... it depends on what you're trying to accomplish with the back button.
If you're main concern is going back and forth between views in a single app, or overall use of the back button I suggest some key remapping.
If you are right handed, the back button might indeed be uncomfortable to press one handed. But if you switch it with the home key or the green key, you might get less sore, since your hand won't have to move so awkwardly. Of course, the pictures on the buttons wouldn't match their function (which bothers some) but it's an idea nonetheless.
Another, perhaps more intriguing remap idea would be to remap the volume down key to be a back key (you can always use a widget for real volume control.)
If you're only concerned about app switching, I suggest trying the app "Smart Taskbar (sidebar)" from the market. That might help you. It has an on-screen dot that you press to open a list of apps, shortcuts, etc. That way you don't have to use as many physical buttons to navigate between apps.
Anyway, in conclusion, if I were in your situation, I'd remap volume down to be the back button. Here is a thread that helps with remapping.
A few other threads on basically the same topic, but due to many people's HD2 hardware buttons failing due to excessive use from Andriod. Software buttons are the answer to this, but nothing has come out yet.
Hi, sorry for my english level.
I am looking for a virtual/on screen back button (I think that the physical back button is cheap - endurance problems ?).
I don't want to create a new topic... do you have information ? I don't find it in this topic.
Thx in advance
Is it virtual next and previous buttons ? Thx.
(down right and down left)

If I accidentally long press my home button it opens the Google App. Is there anyway to disable this? I can't find it.
I think if you go into Applications and clear the defaults for the Google App it will stop that. The next time you long press it will ask you what you want it to do as the default. I don't recall what the options are after that.
Thx it was in applications but, the tab default applications. Than "app device support" than you can choose for Google App, svoice, grenify or none. Thx for guiding me to the right direction.

I've tried this but Now on tap is still the default one, I've checked for Now on Tap in settings but can't see anything.
Go to Settings->Applications->Default Applications->Device Assistance App and between "Google Now" and "None", select "None" and you're good to go

Ok I've done that, however now when I press and hold the home button nothing happens....I've also reset the Svoice defaults ?
The strange thing is whilst I'm connected to my Bluetooth car kit if I hold down the talk button it asks what to set as default, once S Voice is set I then try the home button but still nothing ?
Bump
I've managed to get S-Voice back, in case anyone else has the same issue this is what you do....
Enable the Quick Dial option under Galaxy Labs,
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
this then enables S-Voice and then you should see it under the Device assistance app setting
This has took me several days off messing around ?
It was in here since the 18th but with screens it makes it much more clear, Thx for sharing.

If your recents button is broken, how did you get to the recents screen shown in your attachment?
There's an app called HomeBot that will let you customize what a long press home button does, including showing Recents.

I f#$%&%g hate the new Google Assistant defaulted function when long pressing the home key. Prior to this latest update, long pressing the home key got me to my news feed provided by Google.. I read that **** every morning!!! Is there a way to get that back????

My Thoughts EXACTLY Juanito157! I just don't understand why the Hell these companies feel the need to "VIGOROUSLY FIX" SH!TE THAT ISN'T BROKEN!! And 9 times out of 10, they Remove or "Hide" options and widgets that were Just Perfectly Fine where they Freakin were to begin with. I Swear between my PC's, Android Devices, Gaming Systems and others like FireTV Box etc... I Must waste on average, at LEAST a Hour, Almost Every Damn Day, Just WATCHING & WAITING for UPDATES! It's getting really Outa Hand & Insane Lol.... Anyway's, So Sorry for the Rant, a little off topic... BUT YES, PLEASE Let us know if anyone has found a way to Revert or Change back to the way Google was before they HAD TO "FIX" IT ; ยค }
I loved it because I could long press Home & "Force" Copy /Paste Info from almost anywhere, Even Screen Shot Pics. Now, If this feature is still available and I'm just being a Moron, Which is very possible, can someone Chime in and Help a guy out Please!
*** And I know that there are 3rd Party Apps that will do the "Copy Anywhere" thang... It was just NICE & CONVENIENT having the option built right into Google..
THX & AS ALWAYS, XDA IS THE SH!TE!!
