My case Dilemma- need ur thoughts

OK managed to snatch one of the only/few tilts available in my area last Friday and now, after a week of use I've noticed I hate the ATT case I bought: The leather, plastic clip, top-loading case, SUCKS!
I work in an ER so speed, quality, ease of use is paramount. My major problem with this case is that 1. I press buttons trying to pull it out and 2. the belt clip is not centered well so when I try to orient it horizontally on my scrubs the opening end tips downward toward the floor.
SO, I've been searching around the forums, looked at a TON of different cases. So far I like the look of this: http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=10100000_900000_11000164&products_id=6562
BUT I don't like the plastic over the keyboard and how annoying is that flap when you're trying to talk on the phone? I don't want to be fiddling with a GD flap while talking. Does the flap flip all the way back on itself?
SO, I need a well-balanced, high quality plastic clip (quick releases are good), that does not have cumbersome flaps (or at least has flaps that fold back on the case/go away when used as a phone).

I received mine this week and am satisfied. There is no hole to access the reset button, but that's a minor issue.

It seems that you can't slide the keyboard out when using this case... am I mistaken?

I don't know about the book-style case, but I have the PDAir flip case, which has the flap hinge at the bottom. On that case, the front flap folds back very nicely. The snap strap on the top that holds the front flap closed doesn't fold back so well, but I've only had the case 2 weeks so it'll probably loosen up a bit over time.

To slide the keyboard, you do need to unsnap the cover and fold it back. The phone can still be left in the case. I rarely use the keyboard, but this could be a major issue for those that do.

I think I need something that protects the screen too... I'll have to think it over...

Sorry, I have no pictures. There are images without the phone on the Boxwave site.
There have not been any problems with the clip and screw.
I do use a screen protector, but this case does leave the screen open, a feature I was seeking.

Lanyard / Strap Hole

Hi everyone and Merry Christmas !
I noticed in the just-added Service manual from the wiki that "Lanyard / Strap Hole" is in the list of features. How come? I thought it was one of the flaws of that marvelous device?

I confirm that there is no "Lanyard / Strap Hole" in Touch HD.

I saw the lanyard eyelet in the prototypes (German) on YouTube, and was sadly disappointed when I received my HD it was omitted.
Maybe HTC want people to drop their phones more often

A long time ago, when the Blackstone was just on the market, I asked the same question.
In the online manual no lanyard hole was to be seen, while several review movies of the HD showed a lanyard hole left of the usb port.
I'm using an electric wheelchair and using such an expensive phone without any form of 'safety' would be very ill-advised.
After pondering for days I made a tough decision: I asked my dad (he's very good with tools) to make a tiny hole at the corner where the stylus resides. When you first pull the stylus out you can see exactly where you can drill the hole without damaging anything else.
Now I have my lanyard hole, it doesn't stand out at all and the styles can still enter and leave the HD without trouble!

Work Around
I really missed the strap hole on the HD too.
So I bought a CrystalSlip cover from Boxwave and with a hot paper clip, melted two holes on the bottom left corner.
I wouldn't swing it around by it but the plastic seems to be pretty good and should hold. Anyway it's better than nothing.

Lanyard/Wrist strap for Touch HD!
I was very careful to drill two holes in the stylus silo. The holes have enough clearance for a lanyard strap. I was nervous but it turned out awesome!

AWESOME... but one question what size drill bit did u use? any tips? i'm gonna try this *fix* also.

Seriously though, I was nervous and did take my time Pre-marking the hole. The main thing was to make it small enough just to fit the string through. The less material I drilled out the stronger it would be in the corner. Also I chose a lanyard with the thinnest string so when the stylus was inserted it did not interfere with the magnetic seat.

Replacing X1 Housing

New here but thought Id share my experience of completely replacing the housing for my 10 month old X1. It can be done - even by a non techy person like me!!
Basically the keyboard was worn where it rubbed duiring open / close movement, the cover over the camera lense was cracked and there was general wear and tear. Could have sent it back under warranty but it would have taken an age and they would have charged me for all but keyboard probably.

Apparrantly when someone returns a phone during the 14 day money back period the innards get removed and put in a new case ready for resale. This guy buys the old cases. A real bargain I think as others are priced in the £50+ bracket.

You will also need to assemble some tools. You will allready have the special screwdriver needed for 2 of the screws in your phone (comes with your new case) but you will also need a small cross head watchamkers screw driver for all the rest. Additionaly I found that I used tweasers and a small pair of bull nose pliers. As I dont bite my nails lol, I managed to seperate the clip together casings using my thumbnail otherwise you will need a thin, stiff piece of plastic (they use what looks like a plectrum in vids) Finally and very importantly, you will need a workmat. Unlike on the video I discovered that things fall out of the phone when you take it apart and you definitely dont want them bouncing off a hard surface onto a floor never to be seen again!! I used a white towel for this.
Ok, I had to do mine twice before it was right so here are the reasons and I hope it means you will only have to go through it once!
1. When you take apart the back section of the phone buttons are likely to fall out / may not be present in new. Not sure which but found out camera button was missing only after I had completed reassembly!! No probs they just slot in and used one from the old case.
2. The little metal clips holding the battery cover in place can drop out. Watch out for these they are small and easily missed!
3. You have to pull apart a very small white electrical connection on the phone. Mine was very stubborn and in the end used the small bull nose pliers for better grip. It will come apart you just need to be firm and waggle it a bit!
4.When you take apart the front (screen) section of phone a small black rectangle of rubber falls out. Dont miss it as it keeps the optical joystick in place and gives it the push down springy effect. There is a similar shaped recess for it to fit in but I found that I had to make one side of it sticky in order for it to stay there during reassembley. After you finish assembling this bit check the joystick is properly in place and has that click feel - if not, that rubber pad is not right and you will need to re-do it.
5. Make sure you remove the speaker from the top part of the screen case (behind Sony Ericsson wording) from your old case and fit it in the new one. It just clips in and will come out with a little bit of gentle persausion and leverage. I didnt realise it was missing from my new case and panicked like mad when I couldnt hear anything on starting up!!
6. The most fiddely bit was attaching the ribon cable between the two parts. Take your time with this as you dont want to damage the connection by being too heavy handed. I discovered that the ribbon is longest when the phone is half closed/open. If you can keep it in that position you will have more ribbon to play with and it will be alot easier to lign the connection up.
Ok, the process isnt a walk in the park, I was nervous as hell doing mine (especially when it wasnt right the 1st time) but it wasnt half as bad as I thought so, it can be done....even by me lol!! and is well worth the effort - Good Luck

I have my case in a lil bad conditions and thought I would do the same as u did and change the case, but then I though I would wait a lil bit to get even worse, so that it'd be worth the hassle....
However since lately ma KeyBoard started going crazy, I decided to go with the video and open it to get some dust out....you won't believe it.....I got stuck at the very first step....can't remove the antenna cover, no matter what I do or use !!!

I really need to clean up my keyboard, but it is so complicated to do that, that I'll whait until it stops responding and then I'll try. Some keys are not fully functioning good anymore (you have to press harder to get the symbol), which it turned out to be a common issue with X1's keyboard. There are some cracks in the case ofcourse.
So I suppose, sooner or later I'll follow your lead on this

There are infact 4 vids - 2 disassembly and 2 assembly. Iff you are like me you will need all 4 lol. They are still up on the site I linked to, you just need to scroll down the menu of vids at the bottom right to find the X1 vids. The advatage with this is thay are all in one place, but the original source is YouTube.
darkhalf520, I can believe it!! I almost gave up a couple of times. With the clip on bits, sometimes you need to be quite firm with them

Forgot to mention
Not sure if it was clear on original post, but the new housing came with a keyboard also - mention this as keyboard probs seem to be quite common.

I have the same problem like you. the space-bar doesn't work so good any more. a friend of mine lost his whole keyboard. but i don't think you can clean it you have to replace youre keyboard. i replaced mine xperia case and still the you have to press really hard for the space. i think the keyboard ""dies"" but i'm not sure. does more people have this problem??

from my understanding, OEM means Original, those cases for the 22lbs are real, just used... if you see fascia some other place then its possible it could be one from some other maker, fascias dont always fit either

Yes thats right, the cases are genuine & come from phones returned by customers under the 14 day returns policy that some retailers have. The Grade A refers to the quality / condition. As I said the one I got was mint.

all done and I am sooo damn impressed. the black one looks better imho. the only problem I had, was that those two covers for screws next to camera were not included, so I had to paint my old ones black. after that I've used some clear nail top coat polish from my wife's drawer and it looks brand spanking new.

I maked my xperia also black. it is like you said it looks better and the same color problem with the two covers. but i have a hard case so this new Black wouldnt be damaged or get scratches.

Just changed mine from silver to black. looks the nutts , wasnt to tricky if u take ur time

Btw if anybody needs them there are Sony Ericsson's full disassembly and reassembly instructions at http://rapidshare.com/files/155696508/Guide_Working_Instructions_Mechanical_X1i.pdf.html . I found them much more useful than the video.
Still not for the fainthearted though. Bits have to be unstuck and restuck (some form of EM resistant tape) and the instructions leave you still with small bits of plastic stuck to the covers at the end. And now my earpiece buzzes most alarmingly. But I do have a fully chromed X1!

Also, attached is Sony Ericsson's software for testing all the features of X1, so that you can check everything works properly after you reassemble.

For those who replaced their X1 housing - How long did it take for the whole process?

OK. How fragile is the screen, really?

Hello everyone.
I got my HD2 a couple of weeks ago and as usual with new toys, am still taking some extra care with it. I had a Touch HD before that withstood quite a few bumps and two small drops. I saw people carying iPhones in pants pockets, back and front. Given that HD2 screen is significantly larger, how fragile is it, really? I usually carry my phones in jacket pocket, screen towards the body, without any case or sleeve. Do I need to take so much care for it or is it actually more resilient than it seems? Yes, I've seen the threads with broken screens. Anything can break, given enough force.
Any serious feedback is welcomed. Thanks.

Well I have had mine since it was released in the UK and have had it in my right hand side front pocket in my jeans/trousers etc, sat on floors etc and all sorts and nothing has ever happened to it at all. Its a pretty tough screen I think, as long as when its in you pocket its not at an odd angle, I cant see any problems keeping it in there. I certainly have no problems.

Scratch test
There is a YouTube video of a scratch test of the screen of an HD2, its in foreign but gives a good idea of its screen tolerances (those of a nervous disposition may wish to look away towards the end)

Hmm I can only speak for myself and my HD2... but my screen has 2 (really small) scratches..
I think these are from a keychain or maybe a lighter in my pocket. I don't really know where the came from - but not from dropping it.
I would recommend to use a (thin - not that thick vikuti) foil to protect it against scratches.
--> Question: What would you recomment regarding a foil to cover the screen? I bought 1 Vikuti foil and really disliked it - it is sooo thick
Edit: I think the knife in the video would be able to scratch the screen... only a matter of right angle an pressure

I dropped mine on new years eve - drunk and the only thing i noticed the following day was that i had lost the backplate lol
Someone on here very kindly gave me a replacement.
Other than that - no scratches so far

Had mine three weeks, using front trouser pocket though I am very conscious of checking the pocket for keys etc first.
I have a full body invisibleSHIELD skin, and i'm extremely happy with it.
I've knocked it a few times on the edge of tables and chairs, once on the metal hand grip on a bus seat, and theres not a mark on it anywhere.

I have a screen protector that covers the entire screen, and carry the phone in my pants pocket in the leather case that came with the phone (I'm waiting on a holster from eBay).
The screen is in perfect condition, however, I did scuff the corner of the HD2 by dropping it (in its leather case) as I went to put it in my pocket coming out of a movie theatre...dropped onto cement.

I use a screen protector and have a very nice silicone case for it that fits very snug, but I'm just being careful.
I believe that common sense is enough to keep this device from being damaged. As you can see from the linked video above, the screen is very resiliant, but it's not scratchproof. Also, why on earth anyone would put it in the back pocket of their trousers and sit down is totally beyone me, but people have done it (and probably still do), but they end up on here asking how to fix their damaged screen. (My advice to them is to hook up a flex capacitor to their car, drive at 88mph, go back in time to before they broke it and slap themselves round the face and say "STOP BEING SILLY!!!")
It's tough, but not unbreakable. Just treat it with respect, look after it sensibly, and DO NOT PUT IT IN YOUR BACK TROUSER POCKET OR FRONT SHIRT POCKET!!!

Just making sure I wasn't missing something.
Personally I don't bend over when I need to get something on the floor et cetera...I bend my knees...I've heard that bending like that is bad for your back.

Yes, and even moreso if you have a hernia! Good to see that xda is also responsible for good health advice too

I can't wait for mine to arrive next week. I can tell you from experience that the IPHONE has cracked 3 times in pocket when I put too much pressure. Apple does replace them on a regular basis. They allow for what they call a hairline. If it spiders they won't replace it but a hairline is within their tolerance and is common enough for them to replace it without question. That is how I ended up with a new replacement recently. I wasn't using the phone much but my HD battery died on site so I put the time into the IPHONE to use it. I squatted with the IPHONE in backpocket and CRACK. I probably should check my beltline while I am at it..
They replaced it and that worked out anyways as I am going to sell it. Keep my HD and Bold as backup.
The glass looks pretty solid and as many people reported it a good solid piece of hardware.

i keep mine in the case it comes with when i am carrying it around... any pocket really.
i just make sure i dont sit on it! lol
the screen itself is extremely resilient when it is out and in use.
I leave mine lying around all of the time out of the case and it still looks brand new.
I dont use any screen protector.

screen strength
being a kapasitive screen it uses a propper glass cover instead of ****ty plexi glass or resistive glass as most phones use, this naturally gives it a more scratch proof serface but makes it less resilient to actually breaking. like one guy said it all has to do with angle and preshure.. and abit of bad luck when it comes to screen protection i recomend invisiShield. they are nice and thin, VERY clear plastic so it doesnt disturb teh screen quality. and last but not least, the fabric its made of is teh same as teh stuff that they use to cover helicopter rotor blades with, so it comes with a 30 year waranty.

Nexus7 power button fix

Introduction:
When a button mechanically clicks, that is the signal to you that you've done your part and you should expect the button to do its part. While I've seen this on several other devices, the Nexus7 2013 apparently has a widespread problem which manifests itself in "having to press the power button a certain way". This is caused by the glue used to assemble the buttons having seeped under the contacts.
Here's the fix.
You will need:
A gituar pick
Rubbing alcohol
A Q-Tip
Superglue
Instructions:
1. Remove the back cover from the device with a gitaur pick.
2. Peel up the tape/laminate covering the power button.

3. Clean off both contact surfaces using rubbing alcohol.

4. Reassemble the switch by replacing the tape
5. Using just a dab of glue on the edge of the button assembly, secure the button tape/lamination back into place.
6. Reassemble the device.
Conclusion:
And that's all there is to it. You may decide to skip the superglue during reassembly, but its a good idea to use it generally as removing the tape weakens the hold of the manufacturer's adhesive.
Make no mistakes, this is a manufacturing defect and you should have the ability to return the device to get a new one if you experience this problem. But, after this procedure, the power button should work easily, every time.

Glad to see the fix is easy. Not surprised to see the issue since Asus has just been making crap in terms of quality for a while now. Nexus 7 was better then I thought not having the crap asus quality but the new one has Asus all over it. Used Asus stuff for years and after the crap G75 laptop I had I will never get anything made by Asus. Sucks I wanted a new nexus 7 guess I'll wait till Samsung or lg or Motorola makes the third version.
Asus has just dropped off a cliff the past few years. They dident even go downhill they went from great to utter budget crap even the ROG line. Waiting to see the last great Asus products go down the same way. The Rog mobos. I was really hoping Google would push some weight saying they have to do some QC on the nexus 7.
Anyways great guide. But I'll add that on electronics you want 90%+ alch. Get the colorless with no scents added. Those leave traces behind. Should not matter on buttons like this but if anyone was wondering if they could use the red or green alch. I advise you to get the highest % with no colors or sents added. At my work for cleaning pcb's we use 98% but anything over 85% is great.

Guitar picks come in all kinds of gauges. What did you use? (Or can you at least tell us if it was a heavy, med, or light by what manufacturer?)
Are the plastic pegs (or whatever is) holding the back on very fragile? And chance of a pic of the inside of the back so we can see where they are placed?

Thanks. Good to know there is a video coming. I got impatient and just went ahead anyway.
One thing I learned is to not start by the buttons if you can (even though the case is a bit weaker and more flexible there) because you can't really work your way around the bottom due to the usb port, and if you attempt to work your way around the top corner that has the camera in it you may very well crack the case there like I did. Didn't notice until I had it back on but there is a hair line crack running from the corner to the hole that the camera looks through. It's only noticeable if you really look for it and everything is held together just fine but thought I'd mention it in case it helps anyone else avoid the same mistake. I'd say that corner will be prone to that due to the camera hole being so close to corner edge that you are trying to pry off.
Once I finished I tried again with my brother's N7 but this time started opening from the long edge opposite the buttons and worked my way around the corner to the top edge. This allowed me to essentially just pull the case off the other top corner by the camera (with the help of a bit of careful prodding with the guitar pic) and then, once I'd freed the case from the top and sides, pull it downwards away from the USB port. (Probably obvious to most but I didn't really realize until I'd done the first one that the USB port anchors the case in place so the bottom edge must come off last, and be put back on first.)
Another thing to be aware of is that there is a very small black rubber grommet sitting over the microphone port (rectangular with a round hole in the middle). It fell off when I opened the first case but I just made sure to seat it properly before putting the case back on. It didn't move when I did the second case since I was a little less rough that time around but something to be aware of and look out for. It's pretty teeny and would be easy to lose without even noticing.
Happy to report that this really did the trick in both cases. Even though I couldn't see any glue on the contacts before cleaning, both units now wake/sleep with every click, whereas before it only worked 70-80% of the time.
I'm sure it will be worth waiting for the video Adam is planning but just thought I'd share in case anyone is as impatient as me.

One thing I learned is to not start by the buttons if you can (even though the case is a bit weaker and more flexible there) because you can't really work your way around the bottom due to the usb port, and if you attempt to work your way around the top corner that has the camera in it you may very well crack the case there like I did. Didn't notice until I had it back on but there is a hair line crack running from the corner to the hole that the camera looks through. It's only noticeable if you really look for it and everything is held together just fine but thought I'd mention it in case it helps anyone else avoid the same mistake. I'd say that corner will be prone to that due to the camera hole being so close to corner edge that you are trying to pry off.

Awesome instructions! I couldn't have stated it better. It really is a tight case though. I think starting near the buttons is fine but I worked around the top corner.

Yes, it is definitely much easier to get into the case starting near the buttons as there's more flex to it there. I suppose a better way to say it might be that if you can get started on the opposite side you will avoid possibly cracking it near the camera like I did. But you'd probably be fine starting near the buttons as long as you're very careful (and not as clumsy or impatient as I was ) working around that first corner.

I aint never had to open up anything like this and will have to to replace my screen. So glad I found this thread first and will be sure to check out the unboxing video before I do. and Yes isopropyl is a much better cleaner than other alcohol based solutions. Gonna do them buttons while Im in there.

But I damaged my N7 13's thin black metal like bezels around the screen when I'm trying to open it, that stuff is really fragile :/

i did this, but i also placed on the power button contact a small piece of 'thickener'... in my case it came from a double sided tape. the sticky part contact on the power button contact, and the other side which has the cover (of the double sided tape), i didn't remove that cover. effectively, a small 'thickener'. then close back the device. fixed!

Adam, a quick question on this power/volume button thread. I got my Nexus 7 2013 version very briefly wet - I mean for a micro second. It does charge, but it won't power up. I can get it into bootloader and the volume buttons work, however, the power button does not. Is there a good way to test the power button using a multimeter or, should I just go ahead and replace the power button/volume button strip completely and hope that does the trick?

My nan also got her tablet wet and can only access the bottloader with the volume buttons. Did you find a solution to make the power button work in the end? I've got a very useless paper weight sat around :/

I lost the rubber mic grommet replacing a cracked screen even knowing it was there. After 20 plus years coding with shot eyes, I paid my 2 nephews to come over and crawl around to find it (wife's phone - nuff said). Still took over an hour to find. So I put a small amount of rubber adhesive around the edges to make it fit snug. I've had it apart 4 times since and it stays put.
