nk.nbf file is the OS (Rom) it requires a tool to flash it to a device which is RUU (RomUpdateUtility).A Rom is a complete compressed package, which includes OS(nk.nbf) and flashing tool RUU(RomUpdateUtility). Its the flashing tool RUU,which you execute to run the rom and flash it to the phone.
I presume you need to do alot of reading and understanding all these terminology and process of flashing

after I cooked ROM from Jeff Summer's Kitchen, it has the option to choose whether you want it .nb1 or .nbf
.nb1 is for SD card flashing
while .nbf is for advanced users...
so what is exactly the difference between this 2 extensions??
Good Q - I was finkin that 2
Keen to always b learning more. Would appreciate a response to add 2 d knowledge for which without this site I would be stuffed wit an XDA still stuck on d update screen
an nbf file contains some information about what kind of device the os image
is intended for, and a bootloader and the os image.
a nb1 file contains only an os image.
nbf's can be flashed with Programme A.
see http://www.xs4all.nl/~itsme/projects/xda/wince-flashfile-formats.html
osimagetool understands both nb1 and nbf files.

Do you mean if I flash the phone with .nbf via osimagetool ( Programme A) , it could be over-write bootloader ?
yes, it could. but osimagetool will not take the bootloader from the nbf,
it always puts the 5.15 bootloader in the file that is flashed with "Programme A"
for a reason I don't yet understand, the bootloader is not always updated.
I am quite sure that "programme a" used to update bootloaders, but I have not seen it do this for some time. - maybe it has to do with the rom version?
Since I am still waiting for T-mobile's release of 2003, and not really jazzed about inhereting all of their bloatware, is it safe to upgrade my US Tmobile phone to this new SX56 Upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003 from Siemens? Is there any particular way it should be installed? Can I just use the executable? How do I backup my address book? Or will all of my personal info be preserved?
Can someone inlighten me?
Thanks

Need to upgrade both ROM and RS
Pardon the novice question, but if I unzip the exe file, is there a way to upgrade both the ROM and the RS using xdatools? I know about the method to load the SD card with the .nbf file if you just need the ROM, but I need both.
Any tips?

For the Radio upgrade copy the below files in your devices windows root folder and run RSUpgrade.exe from File Explorer:
monitor_ul_bs.m0
monitor_ul_bs.map
RSUpgrade.cp64
RSUpgrade.exe
Note: this is to be done after you complete the ROM upgrade.

I Syncronized the XDAUNLOCK to my AT&T SX56 but when I tried to run it I got "error getting unlock code" can you help...
Thanks
Backup your existing rom to sd card, install developers rom special edition, this will unlock the phone, then flash original rom from sd using bootloader method.
need to unlock sx56
is there another method to install developers rom special edition b/c i tried to cook up a new rom after being redirected to www.yorch.net but 1st my rom version at&t A.30.09 eng is not listed does it mean i can't do it
2nd i used the 3.17.03 ENG O2-Euro hoping to overwrite mine but i could only create an exe not an nk.nb1 or the .nbf file

i extracted the exe file to a new folder but there was not an .nbf file or at least i couldn't find one :?: :!: :?:
thanks
there is a subfolder named english. The NK lives there.
i found the nbf file i had to extract onto itself
i'm using the bootloader to do flash the new rom to my phone
i'm at the step where the device is suppose to recognize a new rom on my sd card
i copied the nbf file using xdarit
i plugged the card back into the pda
now i start the wallaby bootloader im running v5.15 it supposedly should recognize the new rom well the instructions say to copy the .nb1 file on the card but with the extraction method i could only get a .nbf is that why it's not being recognized
thanks
thanks guys my phone is free .... free as in unlocked
these are the steps i took
someone can do in 30 mn what i did in 1 day
-backed up my rom onto a sd card with wallaby bootloader v5.15
-using the xdarit i downloaded my old rom on my PC
-cooked a new rom with xdaunlock at yorch.net
-couldn't create a .nb1 or .nbf file so i took the .exe rom
-with winzip extracted the newly dowloaded rom onto itself to get the nk.nbf file to be flashed (when i extracted it on a new folder there was no nk file listed, so i went back to the kitchen cooked another rom saved the exe "et voila")
-i couldn't get the newly upgraded rom to be recognized when using the bootloader
-downloaded the xdatools to copy the nk file on sd card (i was unable to pick my sd card reader as a destination -weird stuff) so i did this
-from the english folder Abbas is talking about above i right click the nk file to copy it to SD card and xdatools was launched automatically
-plugged the sd card in the phone and started the bootloader v5.15 and instantly the rom on the sd card was recognized
-press action to download it
-cold reboot ( the battery on/off, erase all)

All tools in XDA-developers.com cannot unlock SX56 radio A.33.02 or T-mobile 6.25.02
I developed a new tool to unlock them.

Maybe they should downgrade their radio, then unlock and then upgrade the radio and rom again. I think that is the new tool cgigate developed!

Be sure you choose the right image file, OSImage Tools supports only image files for Wallaby Devices (O2 Xda, Siemens SX56...) it can read either nb1 or nbf format.
Is is possible to extract files from an NK.NBF file? I am interested in just pulling all the CAB files from within. If so, how?
Thanx.
Another semi-related question...
Is there any way to install a phone rom WITHOUT the extended_rom section so as to have more memory available on the phone? Seems kinda useless to have all that stuff in extended_rom that is only used on install.
Thanx again.
Okay...need only four CAB files...can ne1 help me out here?
T-Mobile HotSpot Login Utility
OZ Communications OZ IM
DAT MailTrigger
Winwap Technologies Oy WinWAP
Thanx.

The answer to the first question is yes. You have to: use typho5 tool (search the forum for it) to extract the extrom from the nk.nbf file; use winimage (windows xp shareware) to open the extrom .nb file.
The answer to the second question is no, you cannot join the extrom partition to the main one. It was possible with Magicians (the phones!) but no one has been able to do the same in wizards.
