The basis for this thread is pretty simple.
Let’s create a list of ideas that could possibly be turned into xperia panels.
I figured that since the xda forums are pretty much the first place you would go for to get info it would also be a good starting point to initialise ideas for panels.
Turboguard mentioned some already.

The YouTube panel for example could be the "YouTube DeskTop Version software" integrated into a xml panel with an ability to choose other popular streams.
My suggestion would be a panel that allows you to remotely control winamp or wmp through bluetooh. There are tons of applications out there that do the job already but it would be awesome to have an acctual dedicated panel for it with maybe 4 big buttons and some track information.
I used to use a program called ControlFreak on my symbian that pretty much turned my phone into a remote control.. I wouldn’t mind having the same type of feel for winmo.
Maybe there will be coders out there who might be interested in turning the top suggestions from this topic into actual panels.
So fire away with your suggestions guys!!! ))
1 A ps3 bluetooth remote panel.
2 A blank panel similar to G-desk on uiq where u can make your own desktop as you wish with as many pages, shortcuts etc as you want.
3 A panel similar to fish panel but more colourful with different creatures.
As has been mentioned on other forums a BBC iPlayer for us UK users would be cool - given that Apple iPhone has one I can't believe they still haven't got a streaming client for WinMo yet....
A panel which has a nicer interface for email (as opposed to the rather drab version under WinMo)....
I'll think of some more later
Ah - for those interested in such things (and I am not) social networking panels i.e. Facebook etc. would actually really push on the phone in terms of popularity and thus attract more developers to the Panels concept....

Yeah, i miss my old G-Desk after leaving UIQ for Xperia.
I also miss a way to reinstall the original panels. I have lost some of them, today panel and media panel, after trying out sbp mobile shell. You can not download them and i dont want to do a reset.
What about a coreplayer panel? Just as a shortcut of the prog, like the media panel, but for the coreplayer.. Or just an DivX panel dunno, but I think a more detailed multimedia panel would be useful.. But I think hard work tough:s greez, cad^^

A youtube/online video panel and a facebook panel would be GREAT!
And I really liked Rontysee idea about a blank one where u can do whatever u like =)

Good idea, but there are no cab for MediaExperiencePanel or SonyEricssonPanel.
I had to restore them by restore the registry. Lucky for me that i had a backup.
It is a bit strange that you can not get the original panels from SonyEricsson download.
from what i've been able to see from looking at the sonyE sdk
then it should not be too much trouble porting any pure win32 c++
program into a panel
with .net one may have to make a c++ win32 stub which launch the .net
program in a frame
So who is going to be the first one to make a customized panel thats not official? I bet its going to be one from Xda =)
How about an appointment panel with all your appointments categorized and updated?

Developer competition for X1
Hi all, I was pointed to this forum at inxperia.com because of this conversation about panels.
Thought you might like advance warning of a competition for windows mobile developers to build panels for the X1. Winner gets an X1 and their panels installed on the next batch of X1's.
I've posted more details on my blog. Hope you'll be interested
i wish as a panel, the TASKMANAGER DYNAMO. (the xperia panels are not comparable to a taskmanager with screenshot function.like dynomo... *G)
dynamo looks like xperia panels, but it takes actual screenshots of all opened applications, every time you switch the app.
it will integrate perfect to sony`s/htc`s (*G) UI design and will enhance it extremly.
thats, what in xperia`s panels is missing.
>"Panel Panel" if 9 panels aren't just enough
>Virtual pet panel
>I agree with the email panel
>Txt/MMS panel
>Panel with a "Cursor" (for optical trackpad)
>Instant Msging panel
>Windows Vista panel/shell (something like SPB)
looking at this site: http://xperiancers.com/2008/09/26/your-xperia-questions-answered/
To the right, there's a tag cloud could be a panel that links to apps, the more you use the app, the bigger/bolder the font.
AND the panel program must update there`s icons with actual screenshots of running apps.
(spezially the fish tank`s time!! and status of the fishes!)
Must Have 4 Free Spb Panel
here is a free cool panel: SPB panel 4 free!

Guys,
Do we have a CAB file for either iLauncher (http://www.sbsh.net/products/ilauncher/index.php?page=summary) full version or something similar that will allow us to create our own shortcuts on the today screen?
Control your Pocket PC using the all new iLauncher, packing together the most important set of utilities to better manage your Pocket PC!
iLauncher is an all-in-one application that brings the most powerful utilities that are missing from the Pocket PC operating system to your Pocket PC device in one package. These include: A tab-based launcher Today screen plugin with various information widgets such as battery and memory meters, speed dial shortcuts, screen capture utility and more; A task manager context menu that allows you to track and control the current active applications; A true 'X' button functionality that really shuts-down running applications as opposed to simply minimizing them; A safe-mode protection utility that makes sure your device will always initialize correctly and much more!

yes, wisbar advance desktop
its amazing, and does exactly what you want, also has the option to add meters such as battery or ram and other great stuff, including today plugins, except calendar. Can also be made to look like an iphone [like mine]. It has unlimited possibilities and you can do whatever you want with it. And the best bit, only 10 usd (5gbp) amazing i know! screenshots of mine if you really need them!

oh yeah, its a great plugin. Well worth the money.
Don't warez.
never seen this before, looks almost identical to spb pocket plus today screen
pff pocketage or WAD(or both)
Recomended
Use Claunch, very similar to iLaunch, only free. Sorry no link, just have to google it.
I have used Claunch for several months om WM5 and it was perfect, but after upgrading to WM6 i'm having some troubles with it. it for sure will not work together with HTC taskmanager 2. it would be very nice if they came up with a stable WM6 version
It is stable for me, now that I use WA3, it sometimes would not appear on my today screen without a refresh before I moved up to WA3, never liked the htc taskmanager much, there are so many taskmanagers, wisbar is the king in my book.
When does new panels arrive?
I would love to have like a Youtube panel, facebook panel etc.
When I go to the panel store, there's only 8 panels in total.
I'm like what the hell?!
I thought there would be alot more.
There will be. People have to develope them though.
Hmm how about we make a request topic for panel ideas .. and maybe it will catch some coders attension and we could get the "top ideas" created ))))
Yes, thats a good idea! Please do that, then we can hope of really good panels greez, cad^^
To me the question is: why panels instead of regular apps?
Remember it is impossible to use two panels at the same time, like listen to music and browse facebook (for instance).

Of course you can, but then you have to use WM mediaplayer ot install another one.
I can't surf in to panels from my phone. Some error..
SPB mobile shell panel can be downloaded here -http://www.sonyericsson.com/downloads/fd/99/SpbMobileShell_EN_Panel_X1.cab
I know it comes on some devices but it wasnt on my Uk model
I've noticed now more and more apps are being made for the iPhone exclusively. Google Earth for the iPhone was recently released and apparently has more features then that of it's PC counterpart. Here in Australia, my bank has just released a Mobile Banking application just for the iPhone.
My question is, do you think the Xperia will get that sort of love with it's Panel Application? Or even WM6 in general? I see alot of apps out for WM, but nothing as exclusive or as 'shiny' as those being written for the iPhone.
Which one is the best according to you for regular use? (not asking for listening to music or using FB)
at the moment i prefer PointUI Home2, i think the Pro version is gonna be great, if more plugins keep coming
Pointui Home2 is the best by far.
Its easy to use,
install direct as a pannel no messing about,
very Fast,
easy to change themes,
applets are awesome just pick what ones you need,
very fast releases on new themes and applets,
exellent support from the site
and best of all its all free.
they are even working on a music applet to play music from the home screen.
other pannels seem slow, un customisable and dont have all the features you need.
i have mannila pannel, navigation pannel and the generic pannels supplied. mannila is good but hard to customise.
i like the fish pannel but its not practical, just good for showing off.
The best is the original SE Panel (1, 2, MxP, etc).
TF3D is less responsive, and once installed, make the X1 very slow (compared to an original X1) in many action.
I also think that PointUI Home2 is the best panel ... I hardly ever use touchflow .. every now and then spb mobile shell however the one I use the most is probably the standard today screen with resco contact manager etc.
Generally I switch between panels a lot though ... its great fun
I don't like PointUI and I find TF3D not well adapted yet
I love the fish panel, and chicks love it too
the fish thingy is good for entertaining my kid... thats about it
i think the whole concept of panels is just stupid:
-slow and poorly implemented and programed takes about 10 seconds to do something that can easily be done 2 seconds with a shortcut
-to me, its seems only good to show off to dumb friends.
-not good for practical use. none of the x1 uesers i know depend on it
-im sure sony delayed the release of the phone at least 3-4 months just to get it working fine.... they never did and even if they did, no one really cares
I love the panels.
I constantly switch between 2 SE Panels, one of them rich of functions and apps,
the other plain and esthetic.
I also love the Media panel.
Definitely great concept for me, since you can have completely different homescreens, with all apps available still through the normal menus.
Awesome.
@ GRIZZ, you're missing the point if you think you're supposed to use the panels to go from program to program. I love the panels because I use them sort of like profiles. For work I use the original SE Panel and PointUI, for weekends and evenings I'll use PointUi or occasionally Manilla and for bedtime I use the fish panel. I'm not constantly changing panels during the day, only as I transition from work to play, etc.
BTW, the PointUI qualifies for me as the "best in show" for the reasons mentioned by the previous poster.
am using Pointui Home2 and waiting for the next update in the next 48hrs which has loads of new features making it even easier and more intuitive to use... was a huge spb fan but found it too plain - Home2 is totally customizeable and with the development community releasing new themes and apps every day its become easier to use than anything else so far...
I'm with the Grizz - panels are pretty silly. The concept isn't bad, but it never feels right to use a button press, then a screen press (or two), then wait 10 more seconds for the panel to creep up.
If the X button could just shuffle through them quickly, they would be great.
I'm not sure I understand why SPB mobile shell can snap between screens instantaneously, but when I switch to an SE panel, I can almost see each individual icon being drawn...
Microsoft Today
yeah! you heard it right. it is the best. if i want more information i use today plugins. it is the most efficient way ofgetting the information i want. all other panels i use them to impress people. especially manila touchflo3d. its more annoying than useful.
i think mobile shell panel is the best. it's easy to use and has very good gui.

Sry Forgot the Screenshots and the game name is helicopter
*works in both landscape as well as potrait
could you or somebody else do this game, which i love, into a cab file which intsalls it as a panel.
Because, when i install Growing Panel, my X1i doesn't show/recognize this panel, and replacing the files didn't help.
Is this an known problem that Growing Panel does not work on some devices?

There is a cab for this game online, search pocket pc games on Google and look through those websites, you'll find it eventually. Why would you want a panel for 1 game?
Edit: The growing panel requires FlashLite 3.1 and ActiveX, if you have both of those, it works great.
Haha, this game is awesome... too bad it's also slow as ass and it hates landscape.
I do see huge potential in this, a gaming panel! When you start the panel you could have a menu with all kinds of flash games.
It'd be easy to also display time, but perhaps notifications as well, making it a fully functional panel.
Keep developing, I'd like to see where this goes.
I would love to see a tamagotchi type panel, plus you can battle other friends etc via bluetooth or something
thx, didn't think about searching helicopter.
installed flash lit 3.1, but the panel still does not appear, maybe the cab file doesn't work on my phone (downloaded it from this forum)

thanks for the good work...
It will be better to use the panel as a platform and then you
can work on different games on it, instead of overwriting the previous
files...
Anyway, it is a good start...
can you make it to be able to play different other flash games..
any updates

Sounds pretty useless. In fact, the whole panel concept is illogical. Why not just run the program you need and minimize it when you have to do something else? If you open a program in a panel, when you switch panels the program will be closed.
The panels would be useful if we had a few good interfaces. For example one day to run MS3, another day standard WM6.5 menu, another day TouchFLO3D. But why use panels to open applications???

Well I wouldn't say that the concept is illogical It works, and there are at least two decent panel interfaces out there, namely Mobile Shell, Point UI2.
As for running the concept of running an application as a panel. It makes sense for *some* programs. These are type of program that either you want assigned to the end key/running as your background and that could be potentially be processor intensive. Some examples are:
Movie players come to mind, as does music software for when I am running/working out - they are all I need at the moment, and I want to be able to get back to them quickly if I find myself in another application.
GPS software is awesome for this use, b/c it is something you always want accessible at the tap of the end button while you are driving, and when you are done driving, you don't want it minimized you want it closed.
Skype is also good b/c I don't want it running the background when I am done, as it drains battery, and I do want to be able to call it up at the push of the end button when I am using it.

That's exactly what I do.
I use 3 or 4 different homescreens regarding to what I need through the day.
(SE Panels, WM standard, SE Media Panel).
For me the concept works great.
i personally think the panel manager should be operating like the photo album panel, but in a circular motion, instead of selecting pics, select panels...the concept of only having 9 active panels are pure bull%$*t i use my panels and i know more will come i may like before i ditch the xperia, and having to replace a panel just to use it is just dumb, right now i am even changing panels so i can use em, i prefer to see the facebook panel than the app itself, the panel has more eyecandy, i only use the app when i need to leave comments on posts
I like having different interfaces. For example these tools would allow for someone to make a panel for themselves (since its not freeware) of Kinoma Play.
Also SPB MS3.5 since it is not a panel yet.
Providing end-users with these tools would allow the creation of more useful panels not just the few panels that we have already seen.
