I'm sure many people here agree that it's very annoying when you're speaking on the phone and your ear accidentally opens up windows and programs or even worse - ends the call!
Surely one of you very clever chaps can make an app that uses the light sensor so that the Diamond knows you are speaking and therefore locks the screen.
It would help so much,
S.
The clever people already did it but because we, normal people, are too lazy to search through, can´t see it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=425650
...and this is just one example
I'm aware of this software but how does it work within phonecalls? I'm not talking about when the phone rings, I mean post-unlock during the phonecall...
read the post man, it`s not very large and you will find it like I did
The program doesn't do what I describe above, although the idea is brought up a few times in the thread. It can switch off the screen but i'm talking about the light sensor doing this automatically...
The Diamond already turns off the screen when you hold it to your ear (by using the light sensor)...
I thought the diamond shut off the screen on speaking/connecting the call? Plus, it doesn't turn back on without pressing the power button...
the light sensor is not sensitive enough for this use.
:-( Damn! That's a shame.

Interesting, the light sensor of my phone can do this. Initially, the screen turned off whenever I picked up a call. I found it annoying because many a times, I need to use the screen to key in some numbers (pin, a/c numbers, whatever). Then, I used Adv. Conf. to turn this feature off. And I found it even more annoying as I actually hanged up twice by my ear accidentally touching "end call" button. Now, I turned this back on again.... still annoying but less....
I think your light sensor should be able to do this. Maybe you can check this feature on Adv. Conf. to see if it's turned off by accident.
The only things that were turned off in adv.config were 'sleep during call' and 'fast sleep'. I have switched these on and the screen does switch off but is this due to the light sensor? I now use S2U2's feature to switch the screen off as it's faster (screen switches off on connection)...
But, with all these options, I also find it annoying when I have to key in my pin etc. That's why utilising the light sensor so when you take the phone away from your face it switches back on, would be great.
this is really funny! some ppl want this thing off and some ppl want this thing on.
for the record:
the diamond is by default switching off the screen after a few seconds. when i said the diamond i meant the light sensor.
now, from the history:
long, long time ago (about 3-4 months ) the devs here were trying to switch off this feature because if you have to dial one more number or want to switch yr speaker you'll face a black screen (just touch the middle/enter button and you are back in business). some said it is the light sensor, some said it is a timer.....mostly they tried by registry tweaks, don't even remember who was the first to succeed but it was a great victory ...hahahaha
today we have a few options. one of them (the most popular one i think) is schap's advanced configuration. another was is the famous twaek 3.2 (today is 5?).
on the last month we have a few ROMs that already had this tweak built in. i think our friend here has one of those ROMs of them (because he ha sit tweaked already).
m8 i think you can switch this option back to default (switch off the screen) with the advanced config tool.
this one is an example (i think this one was the first):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2278799&postcount=1-tweak no 8.
you can also look at this thread:

one more:

and so on ....everything a search away (i used "screen+call")
Thanks for the post, my issue wasn't how to get the screen off during a call. It was what causes it to go off and if it is the light sensor, could an app be made so that when the phone is taken away from your face, the screen switches on again.
I agree. I would love it to switch off as default, but also TURN ON when I pull the phone away from my face... I can't understand why this is not the default behaviour. I have some time later on this month I will look at this more carefully and possibly program the solution.
Sprint Diamond
I agree that would be great. My screen on my Sprint Diamond has never turned off during a phone call. I didn't even know that was a feature on some diamonds until this thread. I have tried making a call and then covering the light sensor but nothing happens. So, here is my vote for the ability to get a screen that turns on and off as you put it to your ear and take it away.
just work exactly the same as iphone and the problem will be solved.......
"Description:
With G-off display you can turn off the screen by rotating and holding the phone upside down and holding it like that for a second.
To save battery while listen to your favorite music, simply point your phone downward, light off. All background processes remain.
Require G-sensor found in the latest HTC devices like Diamond / Pro / HD, etc."

Just what I need! but...
Hi
This is a nice app that i've wanted. I know I could use Changescreen as it has a similar feature, but a standalone like this is more preferable for me...
But I just can't download from Rapidshare...
Is it possible to load the .cab here since its only 345kb? or a mirror to somewhere else...
Anyways, Thanks for pointing this App out...

Hello
how about battery drain pls?
not working on HTC Rhodium (TP2) - also I can't see it in programs, etc. Do I need to do anything else after install?
I got a question are there any options? like on conference call (when using loud speakers - device is upside down), will it ignore the g-off? Because I am not sure what would happend if I would press POWER BUTTON in the middle of the call just to get the screen back ..
Not working in my Touch Pro, too
Using latest WinMobile 6.5.21935.
I also did a softreset after installation!

You don't see it. But it is there. Go to the Program Files and the directory with the same name. Click once on it, and tune the device upside down. It will switch it off.Not ON again.
You can link to it.

origin of g-off display
Beware! I am NOT the programmer. I don't know who is either. I just found it.
btw ChangeScreen has a "display off" option too.
worked on the tilt 2
it needs dot net compact framework 3.5 and then it loads on startup... closing the title bar that comes up doesn't seem to stop it from working. however, having said this, i can't say that perhaps the tilt 2 didn't have the behavior before i installed this... it took me a while to realize that upside down doesn't mean face down, which is what i had wanted. but having said that, turning it upside down works great because you can put it in your pocket upside down (which basically you might do anyway).
also, indeed, to get it back on, one has to push the power button. but that's good in case the device moves out of tolerance for downward position it won't be going on and off unintentionally--except that even after the screen is already off it will keep executing--i know this because it vibrates when the screen goes off as well, and if i take it out of upside down position and then put it back without turning screen on again, it will vibrate again. this said, walking with it in a pocket didn't seem to keep triggering it, so overall this is a really cool hack.
now for figuring out why my t2 doesn't turn its speakerphone on when placed face down during a call (i was thinking face down should always turn the screen off by way of proximity sensor--which does work on my device because during a call holding finger over ear speaker turns off the display--just doesn't turn speaker on). wait... just realized... if it did then it would have to assume that just putting it to the ear should turn on speaker. so, i'd say what we have here is a challenge... integrate the proximity sensing with the g-sensor to always turn off the display when face down on a flat, reasonably level surface-- and during a call turn on the speaker too.
if this can be done, then combined with the g-off existing functionality it'd be really sweet--i wouldn't have to turn it upside down _before_ placing it flat on a table while listening to music. and the proximity could help make it less worrysome to just automatically turn the screen back on when picked up.

sorry for the duplicate post above--tried to edit, then hit save by accident
edit... i just tried screenchange and it in theory seems to do exactly what i want, but in practice, with 2.78 and any sensitivity level and appropriate no light option checked, it turns off the display even if there is light (and lots of it to be sure). i hold the device upside down above my head and the display goes off. i'm not covering the proximity sensor. my proximity sensor does work when in a phone call. i tried rebooting. i think the proximity sensor may be off somehow on my device...maybe htc only wants it on in a phone call? i will have to see if screenchange will work right with the device in a phone call... further posts will go over with screenchange.
btw, regarding the forum... its annoying that my edit made a whole new post in the first place.
cool!!!thanks
I've in my htc hd2 the Dutty FAM v6 HD2 rom, and I was trying an Android build (mjdejay Clean 2.2)...
It seems everything runs ok, but I've done a Phone Call, screen automatically got black (Off, like in WM 6.5), but when i finished the call, i cannot get screen on again... I've pressed all the buttons, but nothing appears to happen...
If i plug usb wire into HD2 it comes back, and if i do an incoming call, i can take it...
Nobody has got samething? Thnx!
UPDATE: I think that my HTC HD2 has its proximity sensor broken...
A number of members have the same issue. I do. But not always. No fix for the moment.
move the fone away from ur ear
also , get a better rom (even tho i have a mdj build myself)

Gee at least you didn't say buy an android phone. To say take it away from your ear is redundant. And to try a better build is just as bad. Why did you even waste your time replying?

this happened on my phone occasionally (though i haven't experienced it yet with mdj s4 kenel), anyways...
if the screen stayed black after moving the phone away from my ear, id cover the light sensor briefly with a thumb (or whatever!) BEFORE pressing the end call button, this always restored the screen. may work for you?
Hi. I have same problem. Now I have MDJ Froyo Sense 2.4. It is very frustrating all roms what i tested has this problem... Is any solution? I tried to disable automatic display brightnes but without success...
Just to make you feel you are in company I have this issue too. It is the single biggest pain in the ass about android and it isdriving me maaaad.
Still better than rocking WM though.
Same problem here, about 90% of the time. It's most annoying when you're on some automated service that asks you to press a number and you can't get your screen on to bring up the dialpad!
Rest assured though, pressing the end call button does indeed end the call. Just leave the phone alone for a minute or so afterwards and it appears to back to "normal".
Finally i have found a workaround
Hello, after many tests i have found good workaround. It is very simple. Download from Market: "Speaker Shake" (there is avaible a free version) and install it. Then set it like on my screenshot. (important setting is "Speaker Always ON"). Now when you start a call, this app automaticly turn on speaker - this event wake up your phone and then is end of your "black screen". After this you can again switch off speaker in time of call...
Sorry for my bad english. I hope that it will help to you..
I use MDJ FroYo Sense Clean v. 2.4 [kernel: MDJ S6.1]
Thanks. I will give Speaker Shake a try.
Just a little happier right now as others have this issue and that it is just not an issue with my phone.
I am sure it is just an incompatible driver somewhere. Never noticed it in prior builds but with new builds it happens. But not always. But I did notice if I am able to select speaker then turn speaker off the issue doesn't happen. But then the screen does not go black when I put it to my ear.
To me this is a much bigger issue than data freezes. Makes using my phone as a phone almost unbearable.
Hoping someone who knows how will look into this issue soon.
Tried Speaker Shake.
Calls are automatically with speaker on and screen stays awake. However after turning speaker off the screen goes black and won't turn on again.
Nice fix if using speaker ALWAYS but still doesn't help for normal calls.
I tried it many times and this issue "after turning speaker off the screen goes black and won't turn on again" i had only once.
I have changed this app and now it turns speaker back to normal. You can try it. For my is it now best solution how to avoid black screen....
And i forgot to say that you need to have switched off automatic brightness of display..
Has anyone tried covering the light sensors for a few secs?
Not the best solution but it always works for me, can live with that till it gets sorted.

Hello. I have a problem with unlocking the phone. When I lock the phone and try it again to unlock the screen lights up only in black. Sometimes it takes a second, sometimes longer. You have the same problem? Any fix?
Thanks petapen. I will try your modified application.
Still wondering what the issue is here. Newer kernal issue? I believe I am still running hastarin 8.3.
Edit: And for other poster.......covering light sensor or exposing it to bright light does nothing once it turns black.
If anyone have any another solution. Please let me know....

Screebl.....
If you haven't disabled auto brightness, do that. Secondly, some roms require a person to press the "call" key to wake the phone up.
Lastly, try a different rom, just remember to shut off auto brightness. I wish they came with that defaulted to off anyway.
Bumping this thread to keep it alive. Had a 50% chance of keeping the screen on, in froyostone v3.1. But it always came back after hitting end call key.
With MDJ FroYo HD v.4.3 the screen goes black everytime. Even after call the screen does not come back on. Only work around is to have someone call my phone and reject the call with the call end key. Then the screen turns back on.
Replaced screen/digitizer, screen goes dark when making a call & earpiece is silent
So as the title says, I cracked my digitizer 2 weeks ago on vacation and finally got around to replacing it. Having done so, everything works great, all touches register, wifi/lte/texting, no problem. Had to make a phone call today and came upon the issue that the screen goes black and nothing will bring it back. My microphone works but my earpiece (speaker) does not. Once the other party hangs up, hitting the power button brings the screen up like it was sleeping.
As I've gathered from other threads, I'm going to have to tear it down again and make sure the proximity sensor is properly set up and check my cable connections for the earpiece.
Is there anything I should look for specifically while I'm back in there? Thanks all - I've only had it for a month and haven't had time to install a recovery...although I think I rooted it. Don't even remember! But first things first.
My phone's navigation bar stopped working, it doesn't even show any light when I get a notification. Everything else on the screen works, but since the home/back/menu buttons don't work I have to reset the phone whenever I want to check something and I can't go back. I've tried to restart it, to do a hard reset but nothing seems to work.
Once this happened my phone also stopped playing sounds, I can't even listen to the sounds when choosing a ringtone.
Please help me, I've never seen anything like this! Thanks
I had the same problem, it was the cable inside the Phone that is disconnected.
You've to remove the back cover, remove the frame (remove all the screws and connect the plug)
It is not easy to remove the back cover, you'll need heat, and if possible a suction tool so you'll not force only one side of the back cover...
I was almost an half of hour to remove the back cover...but fortunately I had success!
[Solved - same as TiagoRveiga, cables were disconnected]
I also had this problem, the one were the buttons don't work. You can always go to the notification bar and from there go to settings where you can go to apps, chose one and open. Instead of rebooting. It took me a while to discover this easy trick... Now I've had my boyfriend install an extra onscreen home button, return and other thingy. You lose one cm room on the screen but I have settled with it.
Other problems are though: camera never works anymore, after six months. After four months rebooting sill helped sometimes...
With the camera also the flashlight...
Also the sound when calling, nobody hears me, but I hear everything... This after a year suddenly...
A week after this issue, all sound disappeared like with yours, but also gradually. First from time to time and then bam, nothing.
This shows me that there is nothing wrong with the hardware, the camera is not broken, everything on the inside is connected. It are glitches... The software on this phone stinks, really bad...
Umi zero desides when I get to call, listen to music, take pictures... I don't like that. Tomorow, after one year and three months, I give up, my new one plus x will arrive and umi goes with the garbage... I suggest you all folow my lead, the more you try, the more problems that will appear.
