Well it went and happened last night...
While getting out of a car, the belt clip release button got pressed in by my stab-proof vest that I wear for work (this is a design flaw in it's own right, in that any other belt clips like this I have seen, slot the handset 'down' into a channel, and not hang on a hook like the default XDA2 one does - this means that at least then, if the button release becomes pressed, it still needs the device to defy gravity before coming detached - with the XDA2 belt clip, as soon as the button is pressed, as it's just a hook, it falls off).
So my XDA fell just a couple of feet, if that, onto the ground. And even then, it had its standard leather cover on. But of course, the standard cover is less than cr*p, in that it leaves nearly all of the sides exposed!
And now I find I have a slight dent on the side of my previously impeccable XDA2. But worse, slight scuffing or scratching too.
And this is where my issue comes from. With any other device, a rough scratch could be polished out. But with the bl**DY stupid XDA2 material, this is the opposite, in that the normal finish is a brushed, fairly matt aluminium.
But if it gets even slightly scuffed, what actually happens is that it reveals the under layer, and produces in effect, a shiny polished scar. So polishing it is no use at all.
I have owned 28 mobile phones, blackberries, and various other devices in my time. And this is the first device I have ever owned, that has been scuffed beyond apparent easy repair. And worse, I have only owned it a month at most.
I am foaming about this - especially given the series of shortcomings with the device and cover/clip etc, that lead up to this.
But what I need to know now, given that my XDA2 works fine, is this:
Has anyone yet discovered a good way to 'get rid' off minor scratches or scuffs on the material of the XDA2, to cover the shiny material that gets exposed, and leave it with the same sort of brushed matt finish the it normally has, or any paints/primers/touch up cans, that match it?
Please help anyone!
I've attached a photo below, but it doesn't capture it too well, especially as what I HAVE done, is cover it all in lead pencil, then rub it in.
This has reduced a lot of the shine, but of course, this will soon polish off again, so I need a proper solution.
Not sure how to get the dent out, but just get another leather case, a better one than the free one in the box. That should cover the unsightly mark and you won't have to look at it any more. Either that or claim off the insurance if you have it, but then again they may not pay out for cosmetic damage
Some fair advice there mate - cheers.
Only thing is though, you can see it all to well when its on the cradle, and I don't like it cased up too much (both issues of perception I know).
Additionally, I do have insurance, but it's an extension to Home Contents, so my premiums would jump up next year, they would not pay for cosmetic damage, and if I were to even consider a failed ROM upgrade death by pulling power half way through (and I wouldn't dream of that now would I?), then the problem is, the scratches would make it look like the (THEN) failed unit was caused by dropping it.
So I couldn't do a warranty claim, and would be back to the insurance one.
So, given that I can live with the minor dent, has anyone found any cure or solution for scratches, to cover it up back to the original finish of the XDA2?
There must be some solution, paint, primer, filler, or something out there?
Sob sob...
This is funny... I have some scratches too (my XDAII I mean ) but underneath these scratches ale looming some dark material, nothing shiney at least.
I couldn't get rid of the scratches, but polite polishing removed the jagged edges so I won't cut my ear anymore while on the phone.
You could try going for a radical approach and give it a paint job.....either a can of spray silver/aluminium effect, or metallic or matt black - WOW. There are some great effect paints (although less is more in my view).
Use insulation tape (or masking tape) to cover off the screen, buttons, holes etc. You can use the covering as you see fit - you might want to leave some areas (top) silver.....
Hows about getting a dummy XDA II and swapping the cases over?
There is one on ebay at the mo
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4183588276&category=32242
Is it the same real aluminium, and is it difficult to swap over?
Has anyone done this, can give me an idea what is involved?
Although i haven't done it before, i would have thought it was a few torx screws on the back of the case to undo?
Dummy phones are usually proper phones without the internals, usually display models in shops. From my experience the ones in shops are the full casing, just without the inside.
Best thing to do is ask the seller what his is before you bid any money for it. Also ask the conditoin, as if its been mauled in a shop, it could be scratched as well
Ex-display shop ones also usually have some sort of anti-theft bolt through them, which might be less visually appealing than a little scratch on the side.

Yeah - that's the bit that worried me too...
I'll ask about.
Also, to remove the torx screws, means puncturing a Warranty Void label, which is a bit steep for a scratch.
Oh well...
wats the trouble ... ?
why dun you just get the casing REPLACED?! you had already paied 800usd for your machine ... another 100 bucks will get u a new casing.
Er no - I paid a mere £120 british pounds (around 150-170 USD?) for it on contract.
And more importantly, as I just put in one of my last posts, that would invalidate the warranty.
So if I HAD paid that much for it, there's no way I would invalidate the warranty for a few scratches.
They bother me a lot, for sure. But spray, or paint, is a bit different to invalidating the warranty on a one month old XDA2.
Cheers for the input though.
your damaged xda2
you can buy a new O2 XDA II Aluminium case athttp://www.mobiledatadirect.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=136_129&products_id=975
ok try that
Er thanks, but that's, well, er, a CARRY CASE, not the phone shell itself mate.
Cheers though.

Maybe I’m just misinformed, but I though that one of the main differences between the CDMA and GSM versions of the Shift was that the CDMA/Sprint version has an annoying case permanently attached to the unit, whereas the GSM version has a separate “envelope” style case. I thought this was true even in the US.
Imagine my surprise then, when my new GSM Shift X9501 (from Amazon) arrives with the same stupid case as the CDMA version. Is this everyone’s experience (at least in the US) or am I getting some kind of new stock?
The worst part, as with the CDMA version, is that you can’t just remove the screws and the supporting posts underneath them. If you do (and I did), you have three open holes at the bottom of the unit, and the upper and lower halves of the case are no longer connected and will start to separate.
Anyone know of a source for HTC parts that could sell me screws and feet from the caseless European/Asian model?
Thanks.
AFAIK the stupid permanently attached (screwed) case was requested by FCC for US only. Fortunately I am living in Europe. The “envelope” style case is very good for me.
wow lucky me then ....
Hmm. Lucky me then. I got mine from Asia even though I live in USA.

how about we trade. I send you my Envelope Style Case and the rubber feet next to the screws and you send me the attachable folding case. I would prefer that before the envelope case. Mine is in mint condition (never really used it)
we can pay our own postage...

I'm actually going to hold onto this guy for a little bit and see what i like...
Once I learnt how to fold it properly not to get in my way, i didn't mind it.. too bad its brownish tan and not black to match my escalade Mwhaha
I am willing to trade.
Permanently Attached Case
Hi,
I have permanently attached case as well.
I am looking at Mugen extended battery and attached case will not work.
Are the 3 screws that keep the case attached holding anything on the Shift that would cause any issues.
When I call HTC support, they are scripted to advise you that you void warranty.
If the screws are not holding anything other than the case, is there any issue attaching the case when needed and could someone know that you tempered with the case?

Sorry, I havent check the thread for a while. I am still able to trade the Envelope
for the attached case.
Let me know if you still want to trade. I am keen on having the attached case
For those that want to remove the attached case:
If you take the three screws and grind down the sides of the heads to match the same diameter as the metal spacers, the screws will fit back into the holes under the leather case and tighten back up. You obliviously have to remove the metal spacers for this to work. Take your time, the screws will shave down rather quickly, especially on a grinding wheel. I've found if you don't put the screws back in, the two halves of the plastic case of the Shift will always be loose... doesn't seem safe to me. The only issue that I'm still having is trying to find the rubber "feet" that would cover the screw holes where the leather case was. If anyone knows a website to find a replacement battery cover, one could pop off the feet from that and stick them back on the Shift. If you try to put the screws back in without making the screw head diameters' smaller, they will get stuck about 1/4th of the way into the case, and will actually dig into the plastic, making it a hell of a chore to remove them again.
There is an easier way guys, swap screws, all the case screws on the shift have the same thread type and length, I swapped the top 3 wide head screws for 3 of the small head screws from the battery compartment, There are 4 screw holes at the 4 corners of the battery compartment, I used all but the bottom right hole(too close to the case) You need a T6 Torx driver and you have to put them in at a little bit of an angle but they fit fine.
I am also going to try to get the rubber feet to fill the empty holes left at the top. I am hoping HTC can provide these.
G
Any word on this?
Really hating the leather case... But i dont want todo anything until I find the rubber feet
Don't know if they have them small enough, but I have bought for PDAs.

New here but thought Id share my experience of completely replacing the housing for my 10 month old X1. It can be done - even by a non techy person like me!!
Basically the keyboard was worn where it rubbed duiring open / close movement, the cover over the camera lense was cracked and there was general wear and tear. Could have sent it back under warranty but it would have taken an age and they would have charged me for all but keyboard probably.
Instead I bough a complete housing for £22 from here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Original-x1-xperia-Housing-Cover-Case-Housing-UK-T6_W0QQitemZ390078842052QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_MobilePhones_MobilePhoneAccessories_MobilePhoneFascias_JN?hash=item5ad282c4c4&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14They say they are used but mine was immaculate. Apparrantly when someone returns a phone during the 14 day money back period the innards get removed and put in a new case ready for resale. This guy buys the old cases. A real bargain I think as others are priced in the £50+ bracket.
Second you will need to be near a computer when you do the deed. Instructional videos taking you through every stage can be found here
http://www.mygsmtube.com/category/Sonyericsson.html
You will also need to assemble some tools. You will allready have the special screwdriver needed for 2 of the screws in your phone (comes with your new case) but you will also need a small cross head watchamkers screw driver for all the rest. Additionaly I found that I used tweasers and a small pair of bull nose pliers. As I dont bite my nails lol, I managed to seperate the clip together casings using my thumbnail otherwise you will need a thin, stiff piece of plastic (they use what looks like a plectrum in vids) Finally and very importantly, you will need a workmat. Unlike on the video I discovered that things fall out of the phone when you take it apart and you definitely dont want them bouncing off a hard surface onto a floor never to be seen again!! I used a white towel for this.
Ok, I had to do mine twice before it was right so here are the reasons and I hope it means you will only have to go through it once!
1. When you take apart the back section of the phone buttons are likely to fall out / may not be present in new. Not sure which but found out camera button was missing only after I had completed reassembly!! No probs they just slot in and used one from the old case.
2. The little metal clips holding the battery cover in place can drop out. Watch out for these they are small and easily missed!
3. You have to pull apart a very small white electrical connection on the phone. Mine was very stubborn and in the end used the small bull nose pliers for better grip. It will come apart you just need to be firm and waggle it a bit!
4.When you take apart the front (screen) section of phone a small black rectangle of rubber falls out. Dont miss it as it keeps the optical joystick in place and gives it the push down springy effect. There is a similar shaped recess for it to fit in but I found that I had to make one side of it sticky in order for it to stay there during reassembley. After you finish assembling this bit check the joystick is properly in place and has that click feel - if not, that rubber pad is not right and you will need to re-do it.
5. Make sure you remove the speaker from the top part of the screen case (behind Sony Ericsson wording) from your old case and fit it in the new one. It just clips in and will come out with a little bit of gentle persausion and leverage. I didnt realise it was missing from my new case and panicked like mad when I couldnt hear anything on starting up!!
6. The most fiddely bit was attaching the ribon cable between the two parts. Take your time with this as you dont want to damage the connection by being too heavy handed. I discovered that the ribbon is longest when the phone is half closed/open. If you can keep it in that position you will have more ribbon to play with and it will be alot easier to lign the connection up.
Ok, the process isnt a walk in the park, I was nervous as hell doing mine (especially when it wasnt right the 1st time) but it wasnt half as bad as I thought so, it can be done....even by me lol!! and is well worth the effort - Good Luck
I have my case in a lil bad conditions and thought I would do the same as u did and change the case, but then I though I would wait a lil bit to get even worse, so that it'd be worth the hassle....
However since lately ma KeyBoard started going crazy, I decided to go with the video and open it to get some dust out....you won't believe it.....I got stuck at the very first step....can't remove the antenna cover, no matter what I do or use !!!
I replaced my housing to and i used this two movies on youtube. youre Instructional videos are removed by user so i wanted to post the youtube link. it is the same clip as yours i think.

I really need to clean up my keyboard, but it is so complicated to do that, that I'll whait until it stops responding and then I'll try. Some keys are not fully functioning good anymore (you have to press harder to get the symbol), which it turned out to be a common issue with X1's keyboard. There are some cracks in the case ofcourse.
So I suppose, sooner or later I'll follow your lead on this
There are infact 4 vids - 2 disassembly and 2 assembly. Iff you are like me you will need all 4 lol. They are still up on the site I linked to, you just need to scroll down the menu of vids at the bottom right to find the X1 vids. The advatage with this is thay are all in one place, but the original source is YouTube.
darkhalf520, I can believe it!! I almost gave up a couple of times. With the clip on bits, sometimes you need to be quite firm with them
Forgot to mention
Not sure if it was clear on original post, but the new housing came with a keyboard also - mention this as keyboard probs seem to be quite common.
Thanks man, I'm going to do this in about a year, Silver to Black son!!!
crank1... three posts only and I already love You man. thanks! I've just ordered black one for myself as well. this price is a bargain.

and sorry Crank1 i looked at the wrong vids, My mistake
is the ebay selling original or oem? coz i saw 100% ORIGINAL xperia x1 HOUSING
14 DAY STOCK ------- GRADE A -------
Grade A mean oem?
from my understanding, OEM means Original, those cases for the 22lbs are real, just used... if you see fascia some other place then its possible it could be one from some other maker, fascias dont always fit either

Yes thats right, the cases are genuine & come from phones returned by customers under the 14 day returns policy that some retailers have. The Grade A refers to the quality / condition. As I said the one I got was mint.
I found this on cnn.cn for 79.99USD, any feedback for the site anyone? Should i get the used one or the new one? Is the new one worth it? thank you
just got mine, as op stated - almost perfect condition. I'll swap it as soon as my little curious son will go for his nap.
in the package I've got full unbranded black housing, including keyboard.
[EDIT]
all done and I am sooo damn impressed. the black one looks better imho. the only problem I had, was that those two covers for screws next to camera were not included, so I had to paint my old ones black. after that I've used some clear nail top coat polish from my wife's drawer and it looks brand spanking new.
thanks again for the heads up crank1.
No Problem bronx. Great to hear that all went well.

instructions
Btw if anybody needs them there are Sony Ericsson's full disassembly and reassembly instructions at http://rapidshare.com/files/155696508/Guide_Working_Instructions_Mechanical_X1i.pdf.html . I found them much more useful than the video.
Still not for the fainthearted though. Bits have to be unstuck and restuck (some form of EM resistant tape) and the instructions leave you still with small bits of plastic stuck to the covers at the end. And now my earpiece buzzes most alarmingly. But I do have a fully chromed X1!
Also, attached is Sony Ericsson's software for testing all the features of X1, so that you can check everything works properly after you reassemble.
For those who replaced their X1 housing - How long did it take for the whole process?
Thanks!
I am a pretty big perfectionist when it comes to cases. I want something that doesn't add steps to the process of using the phone, and something that is durable as well.
I've been through the hard cover cases and found that they look terrible after a few dings. I also found that on most hard cover cases there is a certain point of weakness where the frame is smaller to compensate for port access, which led my case to crack.
Anyways, I just ordered the O24550LCST1BK from CarryMobile.
Google search O24550LCST1BK and click the first link to see it.
When will I have my url restrictions lifted? I've been a registered user for a bit now...
From the pictures it's just what I was looking for. It isn't blocky or otherwise ugly. I really like the rugged appearance and the metal hook on the back for misc usage!
The only downside is that it doesn't have a way to use the keyboard (thats another model that they offer though). I use mostly touch friendly apps anyways so I won't notice it.
When it arrives I will let you know what I think!
Is this the one you meant?
http://www.carrymobile.ru/all_HTC_HTC+Kaiser_HTC+TyTn+II+Sleeve+Type+Black.html
Doesn't seem very svelte. And having to take it off to use the keyboard is a big negative for me.
The O24550LCBSPBK-4550 may be more along the lines of something you would be interested in. I'm debating changing my order for that one and just removing the front cover flap.
Thx but all these cases are a waste of time and money. Just don't throw your phone on the floor and it stays fine. It's all common sense really. If you drop it, well that's your fault isn't it. Take care of your phone and it will last for years.

I can agree with your point of not dropping it being the number 1 way to make a phone last, but in my situation I need a case for both the protection and belt clip usage. I am normally pretty good about taking care of my phone, but I've had a few run ins with people bumping into me.
I know I am perfectly capable of taking care of my phone, but it's the other 'crazy drivers' im worried about. I'd think differently if I hadnt already had to replaced most of the internal components of my phone XD
I use Seidio hard case with local branded leather pouch (vertical, with flap magnetic cover). Pretty handy. Tried not dropping the phone, it's now 3 times already. All due to my own absent mindedness.
However, the Seidio holds up well, it hasn't cracked or anything. Phone working fine still ..
I had PDAir Aluminium on my SE M600 previously, but given Kaiser's bulk & weight, I decided going lighter. Besides I read somewhere the aluminium reduces signal quality (on M600 doesn't matter, not doing any Wifi - it doesn't have one but it matters for Kaiser, both GPS and Wifi)
Its similar to the case I had by SENA for my HTC 8525/HERMES. The only difference it had a flap the covered the entire screen/keyboard and did fully protect the phone. The only problem was you had to remove the phone for the keyboard. Generally didn't use the keyboard so it was perfect. Unfortunately SENA doesn't make one for the KAISER otherwise I'd buy it. Did protect the phone fully.

did you look at the O24550LCBSPBK-4550 model? Sounds like what you describe, except you can open it up and the keyboard keys are protected by a plastic layer. I finally broke down and got this case, so I am just waiting on it to arrive from hong kong now
Does anyone know of a seller that will post to the UK who sells the flip case that replaces the back of the phone instead of just covering it and making it even thicker. I'm looking for a case like this one. Unfortunately, that seller doesn't actually post out the case he has pictures of and sent out one like this.
It's one of my favourite things about the mi2s that you can get a case that you take the original back of and replace it with a case that is slim, but still protects the screen. I tend to buy a new one of these cases every year when they get worn out - but no-one seems to see them any more. This phone is chunky enough and I don't want to make it even bigger and heavier with a case to protect it. Also, I don't even know where the original non-flip back of the case is any more that I'd need for the cases that everyone else seems to sell!
Thanks very much
