Remember the official twitter anoucement in which the representative said something like "by the time we bring touch HD to US, there will be better phones for you guys then", or something like that?
wmpoweruser claimed to have a source saying the new XD (probably not the real name) makes touch HD looks childish in comparison.
Personally I know it's possible for newer phones to kick HD's rear, but to the degree of "pale in comparison" is unthinkable... unless... flash + android + capacitive touch??? my dream...
http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=1292
on another thought, this could be the same phone as Area-Mobile's claim of the new phone that's similar to HD but has Android
http://www.areamobile.de/news/9999.html
Already a thread of this
May b it's the combination of tegra, wm7, android.
May b come with HD camera with flash ?
Where is there already a thread on xd? I think the improved version will have built in storage (8gig), flash, haptic feedback, and either winmobile 7 or graphics chip.

There isn't really a thread for the XD, namely because we don't know of any Touch "XD". So far it's just a presumed name for whatever next big device might be making, particularly because HTC hinted at a new device when it annouced the HD would not appear in the US.
Of course shortly after that announcement, the HTC T8290 was leaked, and so there are some quick assumptions that the T8290 = Touch XD.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=435096
But again the XD doesn't really exist (yet?). And the T8290 adds WiMAX, which means it's unlikely to appear Stateside anytime soon (at least not until Sprint launches more WiMAX markets); therefore the T8290 probably is not the so-called XD.
All in all, there really isn't any information, except for what little information Mobile-Review "spilled", so everything is purely up to speculation for now.
Sorry because orb3000 wrote "Already a thread of this" i read it as already a thread ON this". My mistake.
Someone did say that news on HD will b old news bcoz some cool stuff is coming. But an HD with WiMAX is not cool as many countries does not have WiMAX yet. And it seems like it doesn't come with 3.5mm jack.
So does anyone think it is cool stuff ? Cold stuff may be.
T8289, to me, is just Touch Diamond with large screen and WiMAX. That's all.
trust me on this. nothing too much better is planned. thats all im saying. atleast not until a bit into 09.
Agreed. The HD is currently the most interesting WinMo thing to come from HTC, as it is an edition of the Diamond that goes quite a way to show that occasionally, HTC DOES listen to customers. When they come out with a device that does Not have some of the most important HD features and is targeted at only some specific markets (the selling point being WiMax ofcourse) I'd hardly call it "the device that makes the HD pale in comparison", or even a more advanced device to begin with.

You're right. The HD will be the best thing at least until Q3/2009 probably. But then there's goning to be something revolutionary.
I really think the Touch HD is good enough for most people. What could possibly be in the XD and not in the HD? HD is beautifully designed compared to the new WIMAX one which is horrible. Maybe the XD will have 8 or 16gig built in. Well we can easily add 8 or 16 gig microsd cards. Maybe XD will have a camera flash? Okay but a slight improvement over HD. Maybe XD will have Windows Mobile 7? Well I am sure the talented folk on here will make a compatible rom for HD users. Maybe XD will have Android? Well we are a Windows Mobile community and it will take a long time for Android to catch up with the thousands of apps out for PPC. Maybe it will have a 4" screen? Well I don't want too big a casing. 3.8" is perfect. Maybe it will have the new graphics chip? The HD seems fast and more than capable to play movies and games.
I am not sure waiting and waiting for the XD version will be so worthwhile in my opinion, especially as we don't know what we are waiting for.
I can't wait for HD. The PERFECT phone (in my opinion of course)
i am pretty sure it wonÄt have WINMO 7 as it will not be out before the end of next year. and even then companys will have to test it before phones come out. so i don't expect WINMO 7 devices to see the light of day befor christmas 2009
For sure the next revolution in mobile phones will be the implementation of tegra or another piece of hardware very similar to tegra. That will then open up the possibilities of how we interact with our phones. I can't wait, but to hang on for the NEXT big thing all the time simply means you miss out on the currently available goodness!

I bet my money on that XD will have WM7, Capactive touch screen and Tegra. the rest, such as flash or built-in storage are minor things.
The reason being that one of WM7's _suggested_ (not minimum) requirement is capacitive touch screen, it has been mentioned more than once that microsoft wants WM& to be finger friendly and touch oriented instead of using a stylus, so those two go in hand in hand most LIKELY. Nvidia also annouced that they are focusing SOLELY on WM7 for tegra APX chip, so that goes hand in hand.
After searching and watching all the Tegra demo videos online, i believe this feature/hardware in itself will trump HD right now. But that won't happen till 6 month ~ a year later. I'm talking about the Tegra APX chip, not the 600 or 650, which may come earlier but are not targeted towards smartphones.
The final reason of why all these are connected is: in the original twitter of why HD is not released in US, the htc rep said "by the time we bring HD to US, there will be better things". The general trend based on my observation is that if someting (phone) is released in europe/asia first, it will be at least 6 month, till the same product passes the FCC certification + carrier certification + all that shenanigan. The same is especially true for US's GSM carrier, just look at how much delay Blackberry Bold is experiencing with AT&T's certification. Not saying it's a bad thing for them to do extra testing, but this delay just fits with what the HTC rep said. and i totally belive at the rate HTC is going, in 6+ month, they will have something that "makes HD look pale in comparison"
It won't be NVidia Tegra but probably Qualcomm or TI with Snapdragon and new OMAPs that feature 1GHz processors (+ Tegra perhaps?).
That's what the rumor about the HTC XD is about probably (well, even HTC employees don't know for sure what MR was talking about).
But it will eventually come before WM7 which means no capacitive touch but that's not for sure too.
That's everything that is known. I tell you because the speculations in this thread are going crazy...
And it is for sure that the HD will be the flagship device for at least half a year if not one year so go for it.

I completely agree with this. The speculations are starting to look more like dreaming away on the ultimate phone, and "by the time the HD comes to the US" certainly does not refer to a time period of over a year from now, and before that hardly anybody realistically expects Tegra APX to be available. Same goes for WM7. Of course in a year from now there will be things that make the HD look pale in comparison. Same goes for hardware in a lot of segments, CPU's and GPU's experience huge developments per year. With that in mind you might as well wait for the rest of your life because every time something comes out something superior is already in the making.
I'm getting the HD because it will definitely rock, and I know it will really take some time before we see anything that will truly make the HD "pale in comparison".

I don't see any revolution coming in 2009. Nothing the same scale as the introduction of touchscreen, camera or gps.
All these went through long period of prototypes, reduced functionality or usage of external devices before being fully integrated in consumer devices.
There is nothing revolutionary now under development that will hit the streets in one year time. Just higher data transfer speed, higher megapixel count, higher MHz cpus, more bling-bling in the interface, better game/video framerates, better internet support, in one word evolution.
The next revolution will probably be the substitution of arm with desktop-like x86 cpus, when the power consumption will drop about 10 times compared to what Via Nano and Intel Atom can do today. And that will be in 3 to 5 years time, when they go to 10nm or so fabrication process.
By that time we will plug the LCDs in our HTCs and play Half Life with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse

Hi All,
So excited about getting the Touch HD, but one thing is kinda bothering me,
since we are all waiting to see the new wm7 and because making such a pricey purchase for a phone, i would expect that wm7 will work on the HD (hopefuly)
Now, what good is wm7 on such a fantastic device if we can't utilize Multi Touch and the like?!
Can anybody confirm via experiment that it can do multi touch?
(and i am not talking about the navi-area like diamond/pro)
Thanks guys,
Fadi
VERY good question, but there is one glaring problem with it:
Since WM6.1 doesn't support multi-touch, there really isn't a way to experiment to see if the HD does in fact support it.
Now, I do remember reading somewhere that the Diamond does support multi-touch a few months ago. I don't know if that was accurate or not, but I did read it. I am not sure if that's the "navi-area" you speak of, but that's what I read.
I am not sure anyone can really answer your question besides HTC themselves and you are going to be hard pressed to get an answer out of them. I sent them a question prior to the HD's release asking if it had a light sensor and they basically told me they don't know- but usually the secondary video camera acts as one. LOL.
If I had to bet, I would say it lacked multi-touch. I am not sure how great multi-touch is, you can use two fingers in opposite directions to zoom in on a picture of you can simply double tap on it twice... lol. I don't own an iPhone so maybe there is more to it than just that and I am pretty sure of that, but I don't think there is a "whole" lot more to it.
Now I am going to get some iPhone "not a fanboy" coming in and telling me that multi-touch scrambles eggs and grills steak.
For goodness sake, why is everybody so obsessed with multi-touch?
I mean, it's a nice feature but with a limited use in fact, and I completely fail to see how lack of it may be a show stopper!
To say that there is no point in buying a device without it is just crazy.

Well, it marinades the steak, and THEN grills it to perfection actually, this is an APPLE iPhone you know
Well, I have an iPhone, I don't think I am a fanboy, hell, who cares......but nah, multi touch is a nice to have, bit it is no big deal.
Kev
Thanks guys for the reply.
I understand your point, actually looking at what wm7 has in store for the
multi-touch technology, it just bothers me to not have it in this nice device.
how much will i use multi-touch... or how useful it is? no idea
I simply like to know that the HD can make use of all what wm7 has to offer.. well..hoping that they release it sometime in this century lol
Thnx
Is there anything close to a firm release date for WM7 yet?
I read 2nd half of 2009 on a site on Google, does anyone know any different?
HTC seam to be chucking out the new models at quite some rate lately with the Diamond, Pro and HD all within a few months of each other. Hopefully they will release new WM7 roms for all these phones and not expect us all to fork out for another £500 device just to upgrade!

Well, it's like whether you need a QWERTY keyboard or not.
If you're asking yourself if you NEED it, then you don't need it.
I think the reason behind the question is what happens in if WM7 is designed with the expectation that multi touch is present.
If that was the case, then some commonly used functions might become very tedious to use without multitouch since you might be forced to go through menu options etc.
e.g. In photo app. If Zoom relied on pinch, the only alternative without it might mean having to go from full screen to normal screen then picking menu button then selecting zoom.
Perhaps we should have these devices launched as WM7 Capable (Not to be confused with WM7 Ultimate Ready)

Well, hopefully MS people will have more foresight than that.
For example, the beloved iPhone zooms with pinching and with double tapping
Don't quote me on this but I THINK I remember reading that 6.5 should be released in Q1 of 2009 and that 7 should be released in 2010.
I am pretty sure about the 2010 release but sort of iffy on the Q1 of 2009 release.
Multi-touch is cool, first thing I did on the Macbook display at the Apple store was try it out on the trackpad- and it was at that point I found it to be useless. I am sure WM7 will implement it but I will bet my shoes that they will support other input methods for specific tasks, such as double tapping.
It would be cool to have, but to put it into perspective, I would love for Apple to boost their camera to 5 megapixels and have them ditch multi-touch or would have HTC add flash to the HD rather than multi-touch. The flash example is a much better example since it's not a deal breaker whereas the weak camera in the iPhone is.
Anyways.
Ya man, it's crazy what some people say- one guy made the lack of TV-out to be almost as bad as nuclear winter. I mean seriously, how many times a week do you use TV-out? I live on campus at a major university, which anyone will tell you has more televisions and iPhones per square yard than any other place in the world, and I have never seen anyone use their TV-out. Hell, I don't think anyone even owns the cable or even knows they could output TV. But man, this guy waged war with me that the lack of TV-out made the HD absolutely and utterly useless. I learned my lesson so now whenever I say anything even REMOTELY negative about the iPhone, I have my flame retardant suit on.

I've just bought a HD (and I like it very much, thank you) on an 18 month Orange contract. I expect my next phone to be an android or WM7 phone. My money is on Android.
HTC offer the best smartphone hardware, which is only currently available with WM. The iPhone offers the best implimented user centric interface, and android offers open source, fast efficient modern interface, and the prospect of the most versatile customisation. I expect over the next 18 month for WM to improve the accessibility of its interface, iPhone to improve its hardware and support for business level functions. Android will become available on a number of different devices (I don't count the current prototype as a serious mass market phone) and if the market takes a shine to it the potential for development and customisabiity is enormous - coupled with the fact that the interface is fast and modern, as a platform it has the potential to to develop at a rate that will put the others to shame.
For my next purchase in 18 months, my money is on android. It wouldn't be the first time I was wrong if it didn't work out that way though.

Yes, Android has the potential to be as customisable as winmo and as pretty as iPhone OS.
And all the news lately are this manufacturer is going to make an Android phone and that manufacturer is going to make an Android phone... seems Symbian is going to have a very tough time next couple of years...

Agree with you mate.
Everyone should define his/her own requirements first before saying if a device is useless. A person who does lots of group presentation using power point and the like on the move might find TV-out indispensable. A person who need to use a device on prolonged basis wihout availability of power will find replaceable battery indispensable. Everyone's requirement is unique and the requirements must first be considered before jumping into the bandwagon to get the latest phone.
Also, just because a person "declares" a device "useless" does not make it useless. It just mean that it does not meet his requirements but may 100% meet my requirements.
Hey,
i heard that multitouch is an apple patent and therefor not available on other phones. is that true?
if so then i'm pretty sure nearly every newer phone is capable of multitouch and there may be just a little "tweak" to unlock it.
any information on this? is somebody working on this?

I know that many HTC’s HD users are frustrated with the Qualcomm chip that HTC choose to power their devices, so I am certain that a lot of our users will be pleased with the following news.

Happy no because I have an HD
Damnit I know I should have waited another year
hehe
No really **** it runs real smooth with all that graphics
ok i am really gonna get pissed.
I bought 5 htc devices so far and all of them are incomplete god damn
god damn it. :| I wonder how much will it be...
Damn Now this sucks , I just got HD for a whooping ~850$(41,900INR) and now they are announcing it hope they don't release it within this year
oO
Unbelievable!!
Hold your horses...
The Touch HD is a fine device.
Nice screen, sensitive, very nice browsing, TF3D has also been tweaked to be close to perfect.
This will be a totally unknown chipset. There is a ton of hype around it, but you need to see what it will deliver.
There is always "something better" in the future. What matters is what you have NOW in your hand, that you can use every day.
It's the same with android - huge hype, "potential" bla bla, but when you have the G1 in your hand, and try to use it for normal stuff, the Touch HD beats it in all ways except the hardware QWERTY keyboard.
Don't be quick to jump to conclusions.
I believe HTC have a reputation of never prodiving the needed display drivers, right? I wonder if this nVidia upgrade will really make a huge difference then...?
smell the coffee guys, ALL technology is outdated the moment it is released and all tech companies have bigger and better in the background for release next week/month/year... much like new cars.....
else if they made the perfect device that was future proof, they'd end their business inside a year
plus dont forget moores law etc
i buy the best i can at the time (my loverly HD) upgrade and tweak it til i get it to a level that i cant improve (much) on and then use it til my contract runs out
this is every 18 months and then i get the next flavour of the month
its like that and thats the way it is (to quote RunDMC )

Thanks to Projection and TNYYNT's work on the Touch HD video conversion, I envision the Touch HD fully meeting my mobile needs for the next 18 months. For the last 6 months of my contract, I'll just have to bear it.

This sounds to me like another marketing anounce but it's a shame HTC&Developers don't put the effort on what is actually on the market. HD is perfectly cabable on very good video when hardware is used at 100%. Just imagine what could be QTV accell on Divx, just look at what gives COD2_Demo_Goforce.exe that uses hardware accel opengl. Part of the problem is that developers dont make use of hardware acceleration and I'm not sure they will use it more with this new hardware. Anyway, we are at the begining of a new age with development of the smartphone technologies, and the HD somtimes looks like a "first try". I think I'll wait 2 years so that I can have a beter device than the onces available next year ;-). And its not a joke, COD2 works on HD with opengl hardware accel. Very fast with smoothed textures but unplayable due to lak of buttons.
htc using qualcomm hardware without drivers....
htc using nvidia hardware without drivers.....
what is the difference in speed? lol
I can't help but wonder if some of the naysayers are former ATI fans, or just cynics. nVidia has had a pretty good history with drivers, especially given to the full (read: early) history of the Detonator drivers (for those few who remember).
The issue of charging HTC for video drivers is pretty unlikely, and if they did, they're going to bundle the driver price into the price of the chips. After all, nVidia, unlike Qualcomm, cares deeply about their name. Where HTC's never put any sort of logo or advertising (beyond a listing in the tech specs) for a Qualcomm chip, I think you can almost bet money there will be an nVidia logo on every box with an equipped HTC phone. I'm not sure I wouldn't expect their logo to find it's way onto the splashscreen on bootup.
I have very few doubts about the video quality/capability/power of nVidia putting a chip into HTC phones....my question is how hacker-friendly will they be. Obviously we'll always be able to dump the roms and scrape the drivers out of the latest phones, but will nVidia be willing to post newer versions of drivers for the public to grab at without being released to a phone (even if it only fixes bugs)? I know it's a bit of a long shot, and unlikely given that they aren't very open-source friendly, but I still hold out some hope.
We don't know what the deal is with the Qualcomm drivers. A year ago I was angry at HTC for not buying the drivers from Qualcomm for my Tytn II, but it's a bit telling that since then we've still had not a single device on the market that uses these Qualcomm chips with full hardware acceleration - not from HTC, not from anybody. Which makes me wonder, maybe the best drivers in the world (eg the ones that Qualcomm would license you if you paid them enough) don't really get worthwhile performance out of these chips either. Maybe HTC have already tried these mythical drivers and found that, actually, there's no great advantage over their homegrown stuff.
If the Qualcomm MSM7200 series was really all that, wouldn't there be at least one device that proved it?
IMHO these low-performing Qualcomm's have been the achille's heel of HTC and the popular face of WinMo for way too long. Better processors can't come soon enough, and I wouldn't look at another HTC device until they're here, and proving themselves.
Qualcomm is far bigger than AMD in terms of sales. Telling from such a big company I'd seriously wonder if Qualcomm did not care about their name. NVidia are well-known for their aggressive advertising, that's for sure. I use a NVidia card in my PC, happy with it, still lots of potential sleeping in this card which has and will never be used because, well, new graphics cards need to be sold - no need to be a fanboy, that's just plain business.
HTC mystics:
- Remember all those historical bugs which have never been fixed on your HTC device, not big stories but simply annoying bugs.
- Screen resolution is another point, why use a WVGA resolution when you cannot give your device the necessary speed (hardware- and/or driverwise) to cope with it ?
All these points are a HTC design matter, not a Qualcomm problem. Oh sure, Qualcomm's license is too expensive, isn't it ? You don't buy a Porsche if you can't afford to buy the fuel to drive it ... (N.B.: didn't use Ferrari as reference as I am not that convinced about Qualcomm either )
To be short: I think the move towards NVidia is a positive one, as it will give HTC the chance to reclaim itself. We will see if they seize it.
In the meanwhile, I'll enjoy my Touch HD
Well, it seems it is a though decision for many people besides me...
I went from a HTC Touch to a i780 from Samsung. Much better phone than the Touch as everybody should know. Used it for more than a year till I got my hands on a new Samsung Jet. Very nice phone, much lighter, smaller, nice interface, and above all a awesome display (AMOLED 800x480). So I bought it a few months ago, but... the problem is when someone is used to a real smartphone with all the software and apps available, and the true customization options... So, Jet to the closet and i780 back on use, but... always a "but"... after getting used to the awesome display, the i780 just looks like crap.
Ok, so even with lot's of phones on every corner of my house, I'm convinced to get something new. I've tried a HTC Hero from a friend and really liked the HTC Sense interface. Android also seem's to work fine under the Sense skin, but the display and an old OS version (android 1.6) doesn't convince me to spend my money as I know I'll always be thinking on something more "up to date".
I went through net surfing and some stores, and the HD2 is really a awesome device: great, great display, fast, etc... But as we know, soon there will be some great new devices: the HTC Supersonic (HD2 alike with Android); the HTC Bravo (much alike Nexus One, but with the awesome HTC Sense); and the Nexus One itself (not yet available in Portugal, but soon it will get here). Besides those, there will be a new iPhone soon, and I don't believe Apple want's to loose the race of smartphones with a new iPhone with lower specs than the others, so probably a great iPhone will come to the light. I must say, I'm a Mac user, but never felt the "need" for an iPhone, but I confess I really like it.
So, in my place, what would you do? HD2 right now or wait for the others?

Wait for the 5" Dell mini 5 on Android!
I think the new iphone will be very similar in specs to the ipad and it will not have any special '4G' apps. But I could be wrong.
4G is supposed to be the name of the new iPhone... I'm not thinking about new apps, only better specs: display, camera, faster cpu, etc...
By the time 4G/LTE is actually a reasonably implemented cellular standard across Europe, the iPhone "4G" will look like a toy from half a decade ago...
Be happy that there are at least a few places in Portugal with 7.2mbps HSDPA service, and generally available 3.6mbps/1.8mbps maximum speeds (all theoretical, of course).
Just get a HD2 now, friend.
I think you can expect a 5mpix camera, 1GHz Apple processor and MAYBE a better display... which means, in the best case, the specs will match the HTC Bravo.
So, I'd say forget about the iPhone. No iPhone could yet match the hardware specs of its competitors, and that won't change with the next version.
Question that remains: HTC Bravo or HD2... right now, I'd say Bravo, BUT that won't be available until March, which is when Windows Mobile 7 will have already been unveiled.
Bottom line: Wait until the announcement of Windows Mobile 7 on February 15. Chances are that it will blow away every bit of desire you now feel for Android or iPhone

You are right my friend, but once more I want to make an attention call for this: iPhone 4G, it's only the name of the device. It doesn't mean it's built for 4th generation networks. At least, it's the name already seen in the source code of the latest updates of iPhone OS. The new iPhone, will be called 4G the same way it could be called 3GSS, or something else...

Aside from the awesome display, the Bravo it's the one most appealing. HD2 or Supersonic, really have great displays, but they are uncomfortable big to carry out on your pocket (pants pocket of course).
About Windows 7, let's wait and see. To say the true, I've always been a Linux/MacOS user and fan (I work as IT Security Specialist, so Windows is always a bad work tool), but to be honest, I've never had problems with Windows based mobile devices...
At least I hope WinMobile 7 to be as good as Windows 7 for PC.

Yeah, NOW... but as I said, by the time the Bravo gets available, you may already have seen WM7 and may not find the Bravo appealing anymore.
You should just wait now, it's a long time until Bravo, iPhone 4G etc. get available and with the speed that smartphones are evolving, what seems appealing now may already be boring with a month.
If you want a new phone right now, get the HD2. That's undoubtedly the best smartphone thats available now in Europe.
But if you don't mind waiting, just stop wondering now about what you should buy and wait what will happen.
And by the way, the HD2 will not be too big for your pocket at all. In fact, I find it more comfortable than the iPhone 3G and the Touch HD I had before, due to the reduced thickness.

Right now, it is really the best one. But will in the future be available an official OS update with WM7? This is probably the most popular question on the forum about the HD2, and if it really has some "hidden" memory to support it...
About it's size, I tried one in the shop when I was carrying my i780. It is bigger than the i780 and it really feels that big in my pocket, even without the leather case. Bigger than my i780, which is uncomfortable in the pocket (front left pocket of my pants) specially when driving... but I forgive it for the awesome display

The HD2 definitely supports it. It does not need any hidden memory, the official specs are enough. I can promise you this.
What I can not promise, is that HTC will release an official upgrade. If they don't there's still a chance that WM7 for the HD2 will be leaked.
But if you want to be sure, just wait another two weeks, cause it's likely that if they will release an official upgrade, they will announce it at the same time Microsoft annouces WM7.
My advice is: Wait for two weeks, and if you like WM7 and there will be an official upgrade, then buy the HD2.
If you don't like what Microsoft shows at MWC, then you can still think about what device to buy. Right now, wondering about what to buy is just a waste of time, because a lot will change in the next few weeks.
The wait will kill me
Anymore opinions?

whats the point in waiting ? every few monats a new really cool phone come out. and you can not compare these phones, there is one windows mobile phone,3 android phones and a osx phone.
Um, what about the Diamond 3/Obsession, or whatever it will be called???
I'm itching to buy an HD2, I even went and had another play with one today : ) However, there are two things stopping me buying it. One is size, the other is that the lack of an AMOLED display.
At the end of last year I bought an Acer S200 with Snapdragon chip. It was awesome because it was so fast : ) The downside was the lack of people developing stuff for it here on XDA, so when the headphone jack failed after two weeks, I sent it back. The next phone I tried was an Omnia II, which was dog slow compared to the Acer, but, of course, it was a little bit smaller than the Acer and it had a beautiful AMOLED screen...
So, I reckon, if you're unsure of the size, wait until the MWC in a couple of weeks and see what is announced. If HTC release a WinMo device that is the size of the Bravo or smaller, but still has a 3.7" sreen and Snapdragon chip, I'm buying it ; )
With regard to WinMo 7, I have one big worry. What if the specs that have been leaked are a minumum standard??? What if our Snapdragon devices struggle to run it like earlier Qualcomm chipsets struggle with 6.5?? What if you actually need the faster Snapdragon, or even dual core Snapdragon chipset to run it well? Just a thought : )
If you want a new phone now, buy the HD2 as it is by far the best one out there. If you can wait, there is always something better coming in the future.
But then, if "something better" is finally out, there will probably be another something better if you can wait another while...

What he said. To me from what I've tried android is a big "meh", so it's out. iPhone is even more out for lack of multitasking, closed environment, etc. So that leaves only the HD2. And, good news, I've loved it when trying it. So my order will go out next week
You cannot chase technology and win my friend, whatever you buy now will be old in 4 months time. R&D is always way ahead. Whatever you buy, buy it for your needs and learn to be satisfied, remembering that they will ALWAYS be something new just around the corner, and if you don't adjust your thinking you will always be unhappy as soon as the next thing comes out.
Apple may have had its big day or two to take in the spotlight and make the competition look bad with its fancy new iPhone 4 and iOS 4.0, but Motorola isn’t going to sit there and just take it. Sanjay Jha & Friends are bringing everything they have to the smartphone party and calling all bets by publicly stating the company’s intent to launch an Android device with a 2 GHz processor by the end of this year.
That’s right, Motorola is planning a new device that is twice as fast as the iPhone 4 and faster than most capable netbooks (running 1.6 GHz or slower processors, that is). It’s clear to see what HelloMoto’s vision is for the upcoming years in the mobile industry, and the company intends to be on the front lines of this onslaught of superphones. This statement came out of Jha’s mouth yesterday at the Executives Club in Chicago and discussed his vision of the future having a focus on highly-capable smartphones that take the place of, and be mostly responsible for the demise of, mobile computing devices such as notebooks and netbooks (would this include the iPad though?). Which naturally led him into sharing this golden nugget of information.
But here’s another kicker. Another anonymous Motorola executive told Conceivably Tech that this new powerful device will essentially include everything that is “technologically possible” in any smartphone today. It will include a gyroscope and a powerful new Nvidia Tegra-based graphics processor complete with full Flash 10.1 hardware acceleration. Oh yeah, this exec also talked about 720p HD video output, HD screen resolution, and camera with more than 5 MP. This has me drooling already.
So what does this mean for you, consumer who is on the fence about iPhone 4? Could this be enough to sway you in either direction?
If Motorola truly comes out with this superphone, it quite possibly could show up as a new Droid (or similar branding) for the holidays. It would make sense, though it’s too early to predict whether or not it will be exclusively on Verizon. No matter what, news like this is what makes me so excited for the future. We have a lot of great things coming, and we’re just barely scratching the surface of what’s actually possible in the future.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say: Unless it has a mini-nuclear battery plant it in, it's going to last about 2 hours 39 minuets and 3.5 seconds.
There comes a point when you don't need anymore power in a phone, because as it is, we're nearing the point of them being able to run Windows 7 Starter!
Actually, lets just carry iPads around and talk on them.

Ummm....what? Did you read it? Future releases don't have to have anything out in the wild yet, planning stages are planning stages.
After reading the leaked FroYo response and hearing about all the C&D letters Moto legal dept has been spewing out. I'm not sure I would buy any Motorola device unless they lightened up a bit.
I guess I am too much of a newbie to post links so see this engadget article for more on my point...

I'm with you dude. if Motorola is going to keep building kill-chips into their handsets, i don't want it.
Considering we're 4 months away from the end of the year and 3 months from the start of the Christmas shopping season, I would think that anything like this would have to be about to start production. I've only heard rumors of dual core and 2 GHz processors, nothing to my knowledge has become available yet. I've heard a lot of news about random tablets and stuff using the Tegra but this is the first I've heard about a Motorola phone. I don't doubt they'll make one but my suspicion is that it won't be available till around Q2 of 2011. Anything like this should be well beyond the planning stage by now if it were going to be released by the end of this year.
aush30 ,
I do have to agree with you that i dont think we will see the phone this year but i am planning on a 2ghz phone being released early in '11
As far as motorola lighting up im not soo concerned with this fact, For the sole reason that if they launch this phone ATT, SPRINT, TMobile will all have to release 2GHZ phones or push theyre research departments. Its an ARMS race with phones..

The reason I say Q2 at the earliest is because of the electronics conventions at the beginning of the year. They'll probably show something off in January-February but it won't become available until at least a couple months later. I could be completely wrong but that seems to be the trend.
We will see when in 2011
yeah, unless there is a major breakthrough in batteries I just don't see this being a good thing

So I've been using an HD2 for a few months, and I absolutely love it, being able to run Phone 7, Android, Ubuntu, and just having so much freedom with it. However, it is an aging device, and while it hasn't had any problems for me as of yet, I'm still considering what my next device will be. My question is: are there any phones out as of now, or to be released soon, that are/could be the next HD2? I mean, I also have a Touchpad, which as of now seems to be heading towards HD2 awesomeness, but I can't quite fit that in my pocket. Any suggestions/thoughts?
Yea I want to know too. I also have an HTC HD2 and a Touchpad. The HTC HD2 is getting really old and the battery life isn't up to par with current smartphones.
In my opinion, there will be no other phone as hackable as the HD2 with the ability to run multiple Operating Systems. Windows Phone is just starting to pickup but give it sometime as it will slowly be hackable. We got no other choice other than Android, Iphone or (Correct me if im wrong) Nokia Meego. I will just wait for next year and wait what HTC or Nokia will bring us.
Yea I've been due for a upgrade for months, just not anything I've seen worth 2years.
Well, if you guys are considering ditching your HD2s drop me a line ;-)

Ha, I browsed Craigslist for a month waiting for a decent price one, then got damn lucky and bought one off some guy LNIB and unlocked for $85 USD. Such a great phone at a great price.
Anyways, there's that Phone 7 Nokia phone coming out soon, the Lumia I think it is? Do you guys think there's any chance for that being super hacked? It seems like a possible contender....
I don't know, I still have my nokia e71 unlocked, the first phone in the States with a front facing camera, and that was three years ago, but after a 4.3inch screen of the HD2, I cant see myself with a smaller screen. So the nokia is a no go for me.

I'm feeling left behind now that most high end phones are dual core, and quad core are right around the corner! Not that I need that kind of power, I'm just afraid that stock Android will start to lag on the HD2 and I'll have to upgrade [ or be stuck with a slow phone :O ]

Dear,
try to check the SonyEricsson Arc, it's very nice one
The Arc is a nice phone, but its not a flagship device like the hd2 was when it was first released.
As for a phone worth upgrading to, there are none that fit the bill just yet. I'm personally waiting for Qualcomm's S4 quad core CPU (2.5Ghz per core, each core running at 25% power of the snapdragon in the hd2) to be released into a phone before I upgrade. Theres quite a bit of waiting involved, however. I think the dual-core variant is already being shipped to manufacturers, and the CES conference in February should release more information.
FYI, the rumour mill is already at work regarding these chips - http://androidandme.com/2011/11/news/rumor-first-28nm-snapdragon-s4-devices-to-arrive-by-february/
First quad core device codenamed HTC Edge (running Tegra 3 quad core @ 1.5Ghz per core) - http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/11/htc-nvidia-quad-core-tegra-3/

I actually love the Arc ROM available for the HD2, and I would consider an Arc [ or the Arc HD], only thing is that I don't think they're available to us here in the US...or is it called something else here?
WOW - that HTC Edge device looks awesome - would love a windows phone with similar spec.
Maybe last WP7 device will be next HD2? (if they switch to W8)
I don't feel the need to replace my HD2 yet, but I'm still looking after "new HD2", to see what might be worthwhile updating later. But I'm yet to see something like that.
Maybe it will come, after HD2 gets really old (when majority of games and heavy apps will not run smooth) and start loosing developers at very fast rate. After all, developers will have to go somewhere. Let's just hope that they will all move to same device.
See samsung galaxy tab sII. Number 1 in many reviews.

Do you mean galaxy tab or galaxy s2? If first, we are looking for phone here.
And I don't care about reviews. I'm looking for must customizable and developed phone, not necessarily best one.
So far from I have seen the only other phone that looks like it might be competition is the Galaxy sII.
But, I have had a horrible experience with the last one(A true POS - the Vibrant).
Yet the new one looks pretty promising. . . . Maybe
But, I just can't swing a close to 500 Dollar price tag.
Here in the UK the SGSII is still too expensive SIM free, considering how long it has been out. If it were 50% cheaper I would buy one to tide me over...
Other than that, the jury is out for me. Every time I see a new handset announced that interests me, the manufacturer screws it up by omitting something that is important for me that I already take for granted - e.g a MicroSD card slot (Micro SDXC is the way forward - especially once I start to watch hi-def movies on my phone and stream to my tv).
I'd also like the same size screen or slightly bigger, but in a smaller device. It will happen in time I'm sure but I'm amazed how long it is taking. Why are so many OEMs are focusing solely on the thickness of the device? Okay, so the Razr (or part of it) is super thin, but it's wider than our HD2 for goodness sake!?!?
Finally.....I like buttons. There, I said it, my shame is out in the open. I remember when just about every hardware button on a device could be programmed for both short and long presses. Notification LEDs rock too. Oh dear, now I have publicly humiliated myself completely.... ; )

So true, I don't like having a single button to wake the phone up. Even the iPhone has 2.
