Hello (Upgrade question) - P3600 General

Hi guys, I've been the prowd owner of a trinity for nearly 18 months now and am starting to get the old hassle from service providers that "providings" upgrades etc..
The thing is although there is a lot of hardware HTC have out there I just read the bumpf on the HD Blackstone and although its faster processor it doesn't seem to have the functionality of the trinity in the radio dept.
I'm looking for a 500mhz phone thats like the trin. The APX 2500 looks impressive but I don't think the service provider will go for it.
Need something with a little more oompf that is'n going to cripple my monthy spendings. Is there a Phone I can ' Upgrade' to that is running WM OS?
I've been using wm devices since I had a SPV E100. And flashing upgrading, tinkering with them for some time now. I will be developing software as soon as I have the ability to. Probably Mobi Java.
I'm looking for similar size phone with a 500 mhz or faster with video hardware that can output to tv. possibly a keyboard but it's not essential.
I just can't fault the trinity as it's a great all rounder.

Samsung OMNIA
Sales guy quoted me 16 gig on board ram...
642Mhz
I'll let you know if I keep it.
If I do anyone know the best place to flog a Trinity

Nope. it's going back.
OK so the omnia has no d-pad. I think i'll go with the Xperia.

Think Twice Before buying XDA Exec.

I have used many blackberry devices and PDA's for my work before and could not wait to get my hands on an EXEC.
It looks supurb it rearly does, It will make your m8's jaws drop.
Thebox it comes in makes you think WOW! I have some nice kit here.
Beyond the box though, You have to start it up, Here you will start to wonder!
It will take about 2 Mins to boot from Cold (1 1/2 mins longer than a 486 PC booting into Windows 98 )
Does not matter what mode you go in, Basic, Advanced or Corporate.
You click on Start And after a small delay you may get the menu.
As you start to navigate through Windows Mobile 5 you will instantly notice the sluggish response and this is all before you even install anything on it.
I read all the pre release reviews about this device and am surprised that no one commented on this speed issue!
You learn to notice that the PDA side is too slow to use compaired to other PDA devices.
TOM TOM users will expeirence massive difficulty and incompatibility issues.
The Exec and other Universal devices was the first time that sees the Windows Mobile 5 Software and as such is so buggy you may as well be using a beta version. Software is very scare's compaired to other windows mobile and SE builds.
Reports are starting to come through about the hinge of the screen, though I did not experience this. Be Warned.
The phone functions I had no problems with, Conversations was clear and had not experienced any missed calls like users of the Jas Jar have reported.
The device is much heaver than you may expect and much more bulky due to it's clamshell form factor (fold up keyboard and swivel screen)
With all the above issue's I was personally Dissapointed and ended up selling on this forum after 2 Day's of having the device.
There may be Flash updates in the very near future though It Pi**es me off that companies release this crap before ironing out this massive issues. I mean did they rearlly thing we would not notice?
Stick to a Blackberry or PDA Stand alone.
ME.. I have just ordered myself a Nokia 8800 and will stick to my HP PDA.
I can see your point about some of the bugs with the device, but every xda has had these and they have been pretty much sorted out with time. Personally I love my exec, it is everything I hoped it would be, and yes, there are annoying glitches (I don't like the O2 ROM) but overall it is working very well. Sorry you had such a bad experience with yours!
Fin
hmm
Love my mda pro,
works a charm in my eyes, and all new mobiles have these problems, after an update or a change of rom it will all be fine.
The problem here is that you buy a state of the art phone/pda, of course it has bugs.. buy a new model car and it will have child faults too. these are minor and will be solved in updates.
I have been using my mda pro for a week now and must say it is the coolest phone/pda ever. the screen is to die for!! I don't even look at my mda 3 screen anymore lol. makes me cry haha
There is no other phone/mda right now which has such great working wifi and a vga screen.
This is a phone/pda for someone who loves to have a mini tablet pc with phone function.
How can you compare this with a blackberry? LMAO got stocks in that company? LOL Do blackberry's have vga screens? hahaha the Universal is a PC and that is what we love!!
Anyway.. the universal is here to stay and is the market leader.. and it certainly helps in keeping development going forward!!
I have a JJ and the call quality has been good (and video calling works okay). There are problems with WM5 (but M$ has never been in the business to produce quality software!). But for me, as a Nokia 9500 user, is the lack of proper phone functions in WM5 that is surprising.
The performance will improve if you turn off the error reporting. But I am still surprised how slow the device is compared to my Treo 650, which only has a 312Mhz processor and has persistent memory.
Like all these devices reviews etc are available so perhaps people should do a bit more research before they buy one?
ehhh
that is like comparing Apples to Oranges.
Just don't buy a MS device if you don't like them! I also have a spv c550, great phone but loads of probs with that new 230pix screen and tomtom5 haha, but still i love it.
nokia, SE p910i and treo are symbian phones and have their own limitations and mishaps. had them all and never liked their restricted GUI.
Nagging we all can, i just love it that we have windows based phones and pda's and will certainly keep buying them. And so will a large group of followers hehe
http://my-symbian.com/forum/ should be the place for you ahhaha
I agree, i had all the nokia 9000 series phones and loved them but I use the excel and the symbian software slaughters excel and the Nokia 9500 could not even handle the transfer of excel files to computer when I bought one and the place I bought it from "Techoni Mobile Phones Australia" said wait for an update from Nokia when I rang and said I wanted my money back as I said to them that they sold me a product that doesn't do as advertised. I will never buy off that company again. The JJ / Exec is an incredible phone/PDA.
Er..I was trying to say the JJ is okay for me...even though it is not complete. I use all types of devices I have no preference I just want something that helps me do things better. I agree about the Nokia word/excel issues, Nokia were silly about this.
Edit: @dvl, the Treo is not Symbian and next there will be a WM5 version of the Treo released. M$ are really pleased with the Treo WM5 as they recognise the hardware is designed well and M$ have had help from Palm to improve the UI.
are all tomtom related issues not a matter of tomtom's software not being 2005 friendly or buggy ?
hehe
You are right, treo is palm, hehe but kinda similar to symbian..
but you made a true statement.. I LOVE THE TREO600/650's feel, touch and looks. And now that they come with WM5 in it i will certainly by that phone.. No doubt about it. And it will be a market leader when it comes out.
ALthough it will not be a Universal.. hehe
hi
i tend to disagree ...ive had my universal for almost 2 months now.. and have no problems with it... connecivity wise or hinge wise
the only thing disappointing me till now (its not related to universal) is that while some devs have updated their softwares most have not yet done so or havent released a fully stable version for wm5
I'm using JJ for the last one month and I have no problem with it at all.
At the beginning I used to experience some troubles with the low speed of the device but after a while, I made some changes to the settings of the JJ and everyting is working fine now.
I think that JJ is having everyting I need and much more.
Still there are some issues to be resolved like the Video full screen play back and other issues, but in General it is the best PDA I have ever used.

roms and support

hello
im thinking of getting the hw6945 as a replacement for my wizard. there are couple of reasons that i havent done yet and this is y:
1. there are no unlock methods, sim and app.
2. not enough user support.
3. no new roms aku3.3.
4. no wm6.
5. current rom is sluggish.
is there a better forum for the ipaq or is it that this fone isnt that famous amongst ppl.
Please let me know asap since i need to make a decision now.
The sluggish part I can't really deny - but it's called the "swiss army knife" of pda/phones for a good reason. Rumors had it that the HP lineup was going to get the wm6 upgrade, which makes sense since the 69xx series is the "flagship" line and they usually have an upgrade path - most recently with the 47xx series. People will tell you that the 65xx wasn't upgradeable but that's because the 69xx was already in pre-production when wm5 was announced. I believe that's the reason why the 69xx is so slow - they just loaded it up with the new OS without upgrading the cpu. From what I understand the specs for wm6 isn't so high as to make the device any more sluggish.
There isn't much user support, but it's a business model not really for hacking.
What's in the new ROM that you want??
I believe it comes unlocked in many parts of the world.

i didnt know that they called the hw6900 series the swiss army of all PDAs. even if they did how come not alot of ppl have it or talk about it. i mean comparing to the wizard, there is so much support for it. anyways, what makes me confused is i love my wizard, but it has been with me for more than a year and i wanted to get another phone. i was thinking about the jasjam but since its the same concept at the wizard, i started to look for something else. you big screen, q keyboard, gps. the hp has all these but then it doesnt have what made the wizrd fun, and that is formating and trying out new roms. how do u like yours and have you had another windows fone other than your hp?
I try to limit myself to one pda/phone gadget at a time. I had the wizard and the magician before that - jasjar never excited me, it's just too huge and in the end you have to be able to talk on the phone without looking like you're holding a brick to your face. The only other phone I would use instead of the hw6965 would be the new treo 750. I'm pretty pragmatic really and I enjoy the good hack as much as the next guy, but the older I get the more I like my things to "just work" as opposed to messing around with it all the time. Treo doesn't have wifi or gps but I like the form factor. The wizard isn't really practical in my opinion - you always have to slide out the keyboard (which means that you are only allowed to be in landscape when you type) and consequently you have to use 2 hands.
with the upcoming launch of new wm6 phones, I'd hold off on any purchases if I were you.

I have had both the 8125 and 8525. I then recieved the HP 6925 from Cingular and I haven't used the others since. In fact I just sold my 8525 on ebay. The 6925 is amazing. The GPS rules and can used with most GPS programs. The keypad works great and the screen cover is perfect. The only thing is that HP is really slow with rom updates. The processor is faster then the 8525 however you take a hit on the screen. Calls are clear and I love using one hand to make calls. I no longer slide out the keyboard. I am very happy and iPAQ's are built to last... Hope this helps..

Unpopular model?

Is it me, or has the herald never gotten popular? And why not? I mean it's a smaller, faster and better Wizard. Comparing to the activity on the Wizard or even the big, chubby Hermes, this sub forum is close to dead! I dont get it.
I'm thinking that too, cause If we see the other forums, the others PDA has a lot of movement in their forums. I think that model is so great, better than other models like the models that you said.
It's just a matter of time. When I joined this forum I already had my HTC Prophet for some time and the community was similar in size and activity like the Herald's now. If you have a look at the Prophet forum now its pretty huge and active, too. It also depends on the prices those devices are sold so people will jump faster on them. The Prophet is avaible for just 10€ with a provider contract here in Germany, the Herald not even close. At least we have some very active users already on our side experimenting in putting cooked ROMs on our beloved Herald's. Sooner or later we we will be able to choose which custom ROM we want to put on our devices.

Yep -i guess also. The wing in america is our chance for cooked roms. Because german romcooker are not very presented (look at ppc-welt.com)
Except you and me - lol
So what can the folks with the Wizard do that we can't as far as ROMs? I just quit using my Wizard (or should I say it quit), and bought my Herald. From everything I see it's the same phone internally. So doesn't it make sense to be able to use a cooked Wizard ROM in a Herald? Of course I don't have the balls to try this myself to see if it works, that's why I'm asking the question.

Wizard uses an "old" os file version = nbf
herald uses = nbh
and the nbh files have to be signed. and we cannot singd it.
That´s the difference. It is not such eays like oin wizard and on hermes they got a prefabricated bootloader with supercid.
for herald they amde it better like for vista etc.
MS is learning how to save their devices

Exactly, the newer devices follow a higher protected filessystem.
The differences might look minor, but they are effective from being modified.
As papamopps said, its comparable with WinXP's to WinVista's protection.
But I'm certain we will have our custom ROM some time soon.
Other XDA communities like PDAMobiz or PDAViet and many others
are having their hands on HTC devices, so I wouldn't worry much,
at least we will get official WM6 ROMs and that's something.
It's just a matter of time... the Wing is the hottest selling PDAphone so far in the US.
And believe me, I bring up custom ROMs for the Herald/Atlas/Wing every chance I get!

It's just a matter of time... i agreee
the ship rom sucks
I also hink it's only a matter of time but for the time been I have had the herald (tmobile Wing) for 3 days and I am soooooo frudtrated with the lack of program memory (not storage memory) on this thing it's a nice phone but geeees the rom on it sucks I cant even have half the programs I had on my Wizard installed 15 programs and the 16th one was igo gps nav and it wont run unless I do a soft reset from lack of memory so i am thinking to go back to the Wizard untill I REAL custom rom is available without all the T-Mobile crap in it I tried to get some of the stuff out but not much luck most of the Tmobile stuff is par of the rom as far as I can tell. 3 days and I really miss the core 2.0n I have on the wizard WHAT A DIFFERENCE.
Not sure if i agree about best selling, Dash still outsells the wing in my area of the us Minnesota. The low memory issues is still really annoying me. official rom is out there somewhere?
With the latest rom from the danish retailer Dangaard, my P4350 is running quite well, haven't had memory problems since flashing it.
Well i guess the people are getting confused by the herald... i bought it because i knew that there is an dual core inside + windows mobile 6! If you don't know that the processor is a dual core, then 201Mhz just seem to be a bit low... i'm running them now on 260Mhz - kinda battery drain, but the speed is awesome! DVD watching *jammi*
The WM6 fixed a lot of bugs and added features, that are very handy + it has long time support, because of the "windows mobile update" option.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but the OMAP850 is not a dual core processor. The Texas Instruments page doesn't state it anywhere. Link to TI OMAP850 site
Yeah - after 30minutes of researching i found that out too... but why does the xda-developers wiki state a dual core in the prohpet running on TI 850?

Would you do it again?

If you could have your money back, would you take it? Or would you keep your HD?
I'm considering a purchase.
Thanks!
EDIT:
Sorry for being unclear. The last Poll choice should read, "No way I would give it back. I couldn't be happier"
No doubt, the Touch HD is the best phone I've ever had! Nothing else on the market compares (in my opinion). The design, the features and the performance all kick a$$!
Thanks Derrick. I'm especially glad to hear that from someone in the States, given that I'd be buying an imported, unlocked version.

i think its ok... i'm about to post mine forsale so i guess i'd fall into the "get my money back" catagory.
After comparing to the iPhone and other Nokia phones on the market, i took a chance at the HD, i wanted it mainly because of the WinMo but in return you get so much more.
It is a beautifully built phone that most other phones aren't capable of doing (iPhone is one example)
My brother has the Samsung Omnia and the difference is phenomenal. If i was a person starting with the Omnia then i would not like WinMo, but that's until i modified every single aspect for him to have a much more beautiful aesthetically looking UI. The HD trumps the Omnia mainly due to the resolution but that's the beauty of WinMo, you can change looks whenever you want and still retain the great WinMo guts.
Get the HD, you won't be disappointed.
I am looking forward to a new one already. I love to tweak the HD, but it still not as fluent as I hope it would be. Next one will have an nvidia tegra chip, looking forward to smooth multitasking already, kinda sick and tired of the qualcomm in my HD.
I will probably ask for my money in a year or so
I'm happy with mine but there are still things I don't like:
1- WiFi reception is worse than my last ppc (eten M700)
2- Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) totaly screwed, instead of the old good way the stupid device opens the crappy media player from windows mobile whenever I press the keys on my stereo bluetooth device, I want to use my own player to listen to music, until now no player solved this problem 100%, waiting for a solution.
3- Can't use the TouchFlo, it's pretty but I prefer the windows mobile today screen and the second today, got all things I need without wasting ram, just want a usefull TouchFlo.
I think the Toshiba tg01 will give the Touch HD a run for its money, but as things currently stand, the HD the best wm device on the market, even despite its lack of physical keyboard.
Off course though the appeal of the tg01 will depend greatly on where you're located, as again, it only appears to work on EU 3g bands
damned carriers!!!
I've been debating changing my t8282 for a t8285 or if my money would be better spent waiting on the tg01 or getting the Pre...though the drop in resolution is sure to hurt...oh decisions, decisions...
I'd keep the phone, am very happy with it so far!
Unfortunately mine has started to have a problem with reception - like ALOT of people on here. As such I've sent it back. If I hadn't had that issue - I'd be more than happy!
@ Tref, what network are you on? If you're on ATT, your best bet is to go with the t8285, make sure to check.
I didn't even know there was a t8285 until after i bought my t8282

I'm on AT&T. Thanks for the tip Doc. I hope my vendor has the 8285.
I'm on ATT and have had no problems with reception or EDGE network. It was the best phone out there when I bought it last year and it's still the best phone out there in my opinion. The only upcoming phone I might possibly consider waiting for is the touch pro 2 and that's only if you want a physical keyboard...if not, I'd get the 8285 Telstra Blackstone so you can have 3G on ATT.
Probably keeping my Touch HD until my contract runs out in about 6 months and then going for Omnia HD.
I like Symbian for the ease of use.
I like WM for the endless customisation.
I will never move to Apple!
Very happy with my HD 6 months on and regular reviews of the market place suggest that there is nothing out there to beat it.
I just want to say i will.
Because It costs me $1200 AUD to buy it
I want $1200 back and spend $850 to buy a new HD.
I will give it back, video playing is a big dissapointment, wifi is weak, and the sound quality is worse than all my former pda's
Taking photo's really suk on this thing.
This deffo will be my last HTC.
It is that XDA improves the standard htc's otherwise it was already be gone.
With standard ROM, it sucks. Even the new updated ROM is not what I expected.
With cooked ROM, I have to say that I love it. Smooth, fast, more user-friendly etc.
Camera could have been better, fast videodriver should have been included -- but compared to other WinMo-based units, the HD rox!
So, all-in-all :: thank you all cookers/developers out there, you saved my HD!
yeah, i have to say that too.
The audio and camera functions are disappointed me too.
I dont listen music and take pic with hd.
I do them by using my n95 8g.
That's really much better than hd.
But for me, hd is still my best 1st fav.
i love it, i think i wont change new phone for at least 2-3 years from now.

Still worth buying this??

Hi all,
After being away for a while and currently not having a htc device i have the oportunity to buy a blackstone used. It looks nice, good preservation, no scratches on the screen, all acessories included. My question is it still worth it???
I have seen some new models of htc but they are a bit expensive here. This one goes for 250€ but i'm afraid it's a bit "old". Please if you can give me your opinion about this issue.
Back from............the end of the world.

Yes it is worth it. It still runs all the latest OS etc. I'm glad I bought mine a few months ago. The HD is a good all round performer, and like you say the other devices around that are better/newer are a lot more expensive. When you can get most the features of the HD2 on the HD for half the price, why not buy the HD. That's the way I see it anyways. The price you stated does sound a bit much though, I'm sure you could get it much cheaper on ebay, but this could just be down to the crappy exchange rate here against the Euro.

Thanks for your reply. Since e-bay is out of the question because many of them don't ship out of their country and i also don't have a pay-pal account it doesn't leave much choise. I have seen the site and i know it's a lot cheaper but still not an option for me. I see that according to users the HD can (almost) do the same as the HD2 and i think i will go for it. Would like to have other opinions though.......

I purchased my blackstone last week after trading in my hero. The hero was a nice handset, i just didn't think android "was all that". I don't think the functionality of android is great, even 2.1. However i am running a the lastest blackstone henge rom on my device and i think its great.
The internal specification of the blackstone is the same as the hero if i'm correct and the hero is a relatively new device in comparison. Don't get eaten up by the snapdragon ghz band wagon, the touch hd still holds its own and imo is a great alrounder.
What requirements do you have for a handset when you look at buying one?
The HD is pretty good still, but a bit slow, and always was, for that sort of money I'd be inclined to buy a new acer S200 now and get the fastest Wm device available, very similar to the HD and are apparently very easy to flash other roms on to if the acer one is buggy.
Despite my disappointing experience with an F900, I would still be prepared to give them another try, I've had bad experiences with HTC and HP branded HTC's also.
Yes, HD is still front runner, specially if you find cooked ROM which has what you like.
And there's plenty of cooked ROMs, and more than half of them are still developing...
Price of 250 € is nice one, if device is really good preserved.

Hi all,
After being away for a while and currently not having a htc device i have the oportunity to buy a blackstone used. It looks nice, good preservation, no scratches on the screen, all acessories included. My question is it still worth it???

I can't comment on the price but I just bought one (t8285) on Ebay for 450 US precisely for the reason that a) I've never had one and didn't like the bulk of the Rhodium and b) there's an EnergyRom for it
The Telstra versions are rare in the US but work on the 850 range which is ATT's 3g band. I wanted to see if I could live without a keyboard and didn't want to pony up the big bucks to get an HD2 for Telstra until I signed off on the soft keyboard.
If you can afford it and find one you like I don't think you can go wrong. It's not the latest and greatest but it is a strong contender.

i agree with this !! this is my second hd i was planning to move over to the hd2 but i was way to big for what needed so i go one with the hd2 engery rom... as its just Ace...
The only bad part of it is Microsoft abandoning WM
Yes, I've seen some used ones in Ebay for $200 - $250. The Touch HD has everything (big screen, WiFi, GPS, FM radio, G-sensor, 5 mpix camera). It's a lot of hardware for that price.
Of course it runs Windows Mobile, which is dying right now. Sooner or later you'll have to move to Windows Phone 7 (vade retro) / iPhone / Android.
Any app you use (or God forbid, purchase) for Windows Mobile will not be transferable to any other phone in the future. Ask the developers if they will port the app and to what platforms.
You have a very good WM 6.1 ROM from KWBR, and a lot of WM 6.5 ROMs. I've used a few of them and am currently running a WM 6.5 with Manilla 2.5 and Opera 10.

I have seen some new models of htc but they are a bit expensive here. This one goes for 250€ but i'm afraid it's a bit "old". Please if you can give me your opinion about this issue.
Back from............the end of the world.
