Would you do it again? - Touch HD General

If you could have your money back, would you take it? Or would you keep your HD?
I'm considering a purchase.
Thanks!
EDIT:
Sorry for being unclear. The last Poll choice should read, "No way I would give it back. I couldn't be happier"

No doubt, the Touch HD is the best phone I've ever had! Nothing else on the market compares (in my opinion). The design, the features and the performance all kick a$$!

Thanks Derrick. I'm especially glad to hear that from someone in the States, given that I'd be buying an imported, unlocked version.

i think its ok... i'm about to post mine forsale so i guess i'd fall into the "get my money back" catagory.

After comparing to the iPhone and other Nokia phones on the market, i took a chance at the HD, i wanted it mainly because of the WinMo but in return you get so much more.
It is a beautifully built phone that most other phones aren't capable of doing (iPhone is one example)
My brother has the Samsung Omnia and the difference is phenomenal. If i was a person starting with the Omnia then i would not like WinMo, but that's until i modified every single aspect for him to have a much more beautiful aesthetically looking UI. The HD trumps the Omnia mainly due to the resolution but that's the beauty of WinMo, you can change looks whenever you want and still retain the great WinMo guts.
Get the HD, you won't be disappointed.

I am looking forward to a new one already. I love to tweak the HD, but it still not as fluent as I hope it would be. Next one will have an nvidia tegra chip, looking forward to smooth multitasking already, kinda sick and tired of the qualcomm in my HD.

I will probably ask for my money in a year or so

I'm happy with mine but there are still things I don't like:
1- WiFi reception is worse than my last ppc (eten M700)
2- Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) totaly screwed, instead of the old good way the stupid device opens the crappy media player from windows mobile whenever I press the keys on my stereo bluetooth device, I want to use my own player to listen to music, until now no player solved this problem 100%, waiting for a solution.
3- Can't use the TouchFlo, it's pretty but I prefer the windows mobile today screen and the second today, got all things I need without wasting ram, just want a usefull TouchFlo.

I think the Toshiba tg01 will give the Touch HD a run for its money, but as things currently stand, the HD the best wm device on the market, even despite its lack of physical keyboard.
Off course though the appeal of the tg01 will depend greatly on where you're located, as again, it only appears to work on EU 3g bands
damned carriers!!!
I've been debating changing my t8282 for a t8285 or if my money would be better spent waiting on the tg01 or getting the Pre...though the drop in resolution is sure to hurt...oh decisions, decisions...

I'd keep the phone, am very happy with it so far!

Unfortunately mine has started to have a problem with reception - like ALOT of people on here. As such I've sent it back. If I hadn't had that issue - I'd be more than happy!

@ Tref, what network are you on? If you're on ATT, your best bet is to go with the t8285, make sure to check.
I didn't even know there was a t8285 until after i bought my t8282

I'm on AT&T. Thanks for the tip Doc. I hope my vendor has the 8285.

I'm on ATT and have had no problems with reception or EDGE network. It was the best phone out there when I bought it last year and it's still the best phone out there in my opinion. The only upcoming phone I might possibly consider waiting for is the touch pro 2 and that's only if you want a physical keyboard...if not, I'd get the 8285 Telstra Blackstone so you can have 3G on ATT.

Probably keeping my Touch HD until my contract runs out in about 6 months and then going for Omnia HD.
I like Symbian for the ease of use.
I like WM for the endless customisation.
I will never move to Apple!

Very happy with my HD 6 months on and regular reviews of the market place suggest that there is nothing out there to beat it.

I just want to say i will.
Because It costs me $1200 AUD to buy it
I want $1200 back and spend $850 to buy a new HD.

I will give it back, video playing is a big dissapointment, wifi is weak, and the sound quality is worse than all my former pda's
Taking photo's really suk on this thing.
This deffo will be my last HTC.
It is that XDA improves the standard htc's otherwise it was already be gone.

With standard ROM, it sucks. Even the new updated ROM is not what I expected.
With cooked ROM, I have to say that I love it. Smooth, fast, more user-friendly etc.
Camera could have been better, fast videodriver should have been included -- but compared to other WinMo-based units, the HD rox!
So, all-in-all :: thank you all cookers/developers out there, you saved my HD!

yeah, i have to say that too.
The audio and camera functions are disappointed me too.
I dont listen music and take pic with hd.
I do them by using my n95 8g.
That's really much better than hd.
But for me, hd is still my best 1st fav.
i love it, i think i wont change new phone for at least 2-3 years from now.

f posts, should I be worried about buying a Jade?

Hi all,
I've been posting in a couple of other furms about a phone for my GF (I'm currently running a touch HD, - previously a TP, a dimaond, and an Orbit)
I've pretty much settled on the touch 3G for her, but the lack of posts about this phone worries me a little. Is it not a popular phone? it seems to do everything you could ask of a phone (touchscreen, built in GPS, camera) and she likes the size etc.
why does it not seem so popular?
thanks
Hi
I think that the problem of the jade is the small dimension, that in this moment the people don't like.
The people like a "big" dimension (Hd and iphone stile).
It is the best PDA phone I have ever had. (With a new LITE ROM )
I think that it is not so popular because people who would like it bought Diamond or another nice PDA phone just a few months ago. They do not need the new one, especially when it has the same "power" .
I upgraded from Artemis, so the change was worth for me.
I think Jade is mid-entry PDA and it have nothing special e.g. big sceen, good camera, hi quality sound
So people may pick the cheaper one or the rich feature one.
But I really love my Jade, it very suit to me.
I love my Jade too
I have no regret in buying this phone, and after almost 3 months of owning one, still busy customizing my Jade.
I thing that there are not many posts, because in PPC forums discuss usually people whose understand to PocketPCs. Those people usually buy something better than Jade. Touch 3G is really mainstream. It's for everyone.
And maybe it's so good that it hasn't so many problems which than couldn't be discused on forums
I have one for about 3 weeks and I'm really satisfied with it. For it's price it's really good (I'm student so I haven't money on something like Touch HD)
It's simple: The HTC Touch 3G is _not_ being sold in the USA.

Just buy it for her. She'll love it. This is the most VFM pda phone on the market... and the most cute looking.
I'm also having one and I'm absolutely happy with it. What was attracting me was the small size, the design but still having all the nice features...
well, it's here!!
I will spend sometime setting it up for her and installing all the apps I put on the Orbit for her, it actually looks pretty good. Small and need with a decent screen so hopefully she'll love it.
Trying to find a pink skin for it at the mo. Skinit.com have great features and allow you to design your own skin, but they don't support the touch 3G.
Might have to stick with a silicone case for her, not quite as nice but should do the trick.

Congratulations on making the right decision! Please tell here to enjoy it! It's a great phone! Cheers!
sorry, when I said Skin, I meant a case...
a bit like www.skinit.com, but they don't do the 3G model
I think the main drawback of touch 3G when compared with touch HD is HD has a built-in G sensor, this makes HD can compete with iPhone.

I am not sure, WinMo is something that doesn't appeal to everyone, most people prefer the likes of Nokia or the iPhone. MinMo is more attractive for geeks/people that need office on the move, and a lot of that audience will be attracted by the more powerful larger devices.
For me however I don't want to be carrying around a brick, the 3G is small, unobtrusive and does as much as I need as any WinMo device does.

upgrade from N95 or wait?

Hi just found this forum after digging around trying to find info on the touch HD.. and thought that you folks arethe best people to ask..
Had my N95 for near 2 years (is the original 1 not the 8GB one) and have found it to be a great phone...... but fancied a change and tbh after seeing the Touch HD i kinda fell in love with it.. lol
I dont know alot about phone in general... so am unsure if upgrading to the HD is a good idea at this time? or is there something much better just around the corner i should wait for? or even a better phone out atm i should maybe look into?
i suppose im just a little worried about buying into another 24 month contract with a phone thats about to get a superior *big brother* in a few months....
So,,, reckon i should just go for a new HD?? or something else? or wait a couple months for some all singing and dancing phone i know nothing about yet? hehe...
great forum... very informative... if a little overwhelming for me
Cheers!
In my opinion you should wait-- cuz there are already more powerfull phones (like Toshiba TG-01) coming out!!! Im personaly waiting for something with Nvidia Tegra!!
Touch HD is a great phone in overall, but all phone have some flaws-- no d-pad, poor video performance(with stock drivers)--- you should read some reviews about Touch HD to get more thoughs about it!!
But anyways Htc aint releasing a much more powerfull phone this year (check www.pdadb.net ) so I think its worth to wait!!
I too upgraded from the original n95....great phone but I too liked the touch.
imho there is always a phone worth waiting for but when do you ever buy?....I think that if you were happy with the n95 for two years then the same will be true for the Hd.
Yes it has it`s quirky points but don`t all phones?
I am well pleased with the Hd and I signed up for 18 months with the option to upgrade in 15 months which I believe is the norm these days....just look through the forum and see what can be done to and with this phone.
I say go get it!!
Hope that helps!
i agree with Hdowner
Great phone and with all the modifications that can be done you can have a new phone everyday LOL well almost
Unless your heavily into watching videos on phone the video performance is fine
and I have never missed the dPad
I upgraded from an N95 about 5 months ago now, & kind of wished I had bought an i-phone instead. But I'm on the fence because I now run Miri's Cooked win mobile 6.5 ROM, which has improved the HD massively. If u decide to purchase a HD, prepare to flash a new ROM.
I could not believe my eyes the first time i booted up my HD and got a message that a programme had crashed, D'OH! Not a good start
I sum up with this;
If u want a business/professional phone with a large high rez screen, easily carrier unlocked and flash upgradeable get a HD.
If u want a great multimedia phone, application store, easy touch controls but an over controlled experience by Apple get an I-phone (S)
Tab
thnx for the input........ i have lately started to look at a couple of other phones.. like the new N97... or the Omnia 2... but none seem to grab me like the HD does...... i know everyone has there own tastes and likes,, but i just think it oozes quality and looks amazing,,,, a definate head turner
even toyed with the idea of the Iphone,,,,,,, but dont think i could jhandle being tied to all things apple,,,, and not being able to access the thousand of 3rd party appz out there... even on my n95 the ammount of free software is amazing and i can only imagine its even greater with a windows mobile,,,
now i just need the courage to try and work out how to upgrade it to Windows mobile 6.5 ...
HD is great (with non-stock ROM ) and I'm very satisfied but if N95 is operative to you could wait for new device coming and then you could choose with new platform.
But You must know I love change and mod device: iPhone (with screen more smooth etc..) is a jail to me and I hate install app only through Official Store (40Mb of s*it only to move mp3 on ipod... bleah!!)
D'rath
I'd say it's worth it, the newer HTC devices aren't necessarily better, just different, if you want simplicity and not a lot of flexibility consider the iPhone, but if you want control and choice go for a HTC device be it WM or Android.

arrgh... hero or HD2.. cant choose ;0(

title says it all really... its upgrade time and i was set on the hero,,, then they release the HD2 and now im stuck back in indecision land again..... *sigh*
main reason im still pulled toward the hero is the upcomming jump to android v2.1 eclair in the new year,,,,
Main reason im pulled toward the HD2 is its just so damn sexy... and who wouldent want that screen!
i have had quite alot of experiance with the hero... but as of yet havent even seen the HD2 in the flesh so cant compare how they operate in comparison to each other........ Is winmo 6.5 as bad as alot of the reviews make out? and does the hd2 suffer from it?
another thing is although people say the winmo market place is pretty poor atm.... after experiancing the android marketplace im feeling pretty let down by it also,,,, yeah sure theres alot of stuff... but really 90% seems a complete waste of time.... really poor stuff i cant see anyone needing.. not to mention the games are woefull.... i feel myself missing my old N95 as it had better games than the hero i would say.. ;0(
i have no idea what the games platform is like on winmo though so if anyone could offer a little insight please?
soo.. what would u go with... the hero or HD2? help me out as my pac code expires in 6 days so gotta pick sumthin sharpish.. lol
If you complain a lot and get frustrated by little nuisance that comes with new technology, then get the Hero. Otherwise, get the HD2.
the hero is old , you can't buy a 6month old phone
How can you even be considering the hero? HD2>>>>>Hero. The Hero is a great phone, but paying almost 480€ for old hardware is not something I'd like to do.
Chivalry,
Answer to your question is simple; if you want a device that is predominantly a phone then it's the Hero, if you want a device that is a focused PDA then it's the HD2.
Also, as someone said above, if you don't like hassle then again, it's the Hero but if you don't mind spending weeks on end tuning and retuning your device (sometimes just to get it to work properly) then it's the HD.
I assume price is not a factor here?
WB
i have had both ohones, i changed from the HERO to the HD2 and can say the HD2 is MUCH better!! no questions and wouldn't go back to the HERO or android.
1. The main downside of the HD2 is that he runs windows mobile : it will give your geek friends with an iphone or an androphone a reason to call you a noob.
2. However, if you can live with that, just get an HD2. The screen is amazing, and the hardware is perfect for real multi-tasking.
3. Don't trust Gizmodo or Endgaget. These people just think that saying windows mobile is crap make them look cool (see 1.). Winmo runs well, and the HTC Sense interface will make you forget it's windows.
4. Windows mobile has a huge application store : it's called the World Wide Web.
5. If you're mainly interested in games, you should get an iPhone. It's got a lot of beautiful ones. Winmo has some too, but you'll have to deal with compatibility issues. Since there's no official API for accelerometer or multitouch, really few games will use them.
6. HD2 is really bigger than Hero. You can see this as an advantage or a disadvantage.
I had a Hero and like dit a lot Then my wife got HD2 as an upgrade and found it too large. So now she likes the Hero and I prefer HD2 over hero.
Here are the limitations of Hero/Android for me:
1 - Exchange support. Lack of tasks was an issue for me. Touchdown fixed it but still not as good as winmo implementation.
2 - Out of the box ms office support is another minus for Hero.
3 - Also windows mobile devices are compatible with Napster to go, so you use their unlimited downloads service in HD2 nicely. You cannot do that on android or other OSes.
4 - Speed is a big plus for HD2.
5 - Feature complete os for HD2. Things like VPN support, connection exceptions make it a better choice for me.
6 - Application availability for windows mobile. While it does not have a good marketplace with tens of thousands of applications, the essential applications such as voip software and video players make it a better choice for me.
7 - Live services integration and myphone service from microsoft are also pluses for winmob.
HTC Sense solves most of the issues with default windows mobile interface and even for non technichal people, it allows smooth transition from android to winmob and vice versa.
I like the Hero a lot and was not thinking to go back to winmob until wm7, HD2 has changed my mind.
However, the items above are pretty much personal and depends on your work as well I suppose.
Zunzun really sums this up well.
I was in the same seat as you, deciding between hero or waiting for HD2. I decided to wait for HD2 because of the sexiness and the screen mainly, and even though all the bashing of WinMo, I am not let down at all. On the other hand I like how you pretty much can change anything, which is why I always favor PC to Mac for example.
ALAS!
i am glad to see i am not not the only one stuck in this notion of indecision!
I had the Hero and when i got the HD2 couple of days ago my first reaction was "wow so similar to hero but so much better" the screen really DOES make a big difference honestly
the web browsing is sensational in a word
i agree with previous posts, the downside is winmo, but tbh HTC front end is so robust you barely notice it and it is much much finger friendly than it has ever been - once you have your basic settings sorted you will barely ever have to go back into it
although people compare the market place, i would agree with one of the guys who said that most stuff on the google marketplace is a shambles - it really is - its like Tesco Basics vs Tesco finest
Again if you want gaming get an iphone - better still get the ipod and use the HD2 wifi router option to connect to the net! this phone is very good, someone is very likely to bring Android to it and you can try that too but tbh HTC have done a very bang up job on it
Performance wise it is miles ahead of the Hero - i used to work for t-mobile so have had exposure to phones and the problems you get - for normal everyday use, i would get this phone over the Hero, simply for better user experience overall
sorry if that was more than my two cents worth!

Because well, the hd2/leo is one damn hawt phone, but theres bugs in it that will make you pull your hair out (well in a matter of speech ofc, but ye, random signal loss, hanging sms, bugs with sd cards etc etc)
On the bright side theres alot of smart people here, and they already solved some bugs, and HTC themselves are appearing to take notice of all hd2 problems now, more and more 'fixes' appear
i moved from htc diamond (1.7+ year) to omnia ii
i really missed XDA when i moved to omnia ii
omnia ii sold
waiting for my HD2

Why is winmo a downside? Surely it's only a downside if you care more about how pretty the UI is than how powerful/flexible/feature-rich/functional it is? And surely if you're a member of this forum that isn't true?
It is a far more sophisticated OS than any other mobile phone platform. Period.

Still worth buying this??

Hi all,
After being away for a while and currently not having a htc device i have the oportunity to buy a blackstone used. It looks nice, good preservation, no scratches on the screen, all acessories included. My question is it still worth it???
I have seen some new models of htc but they are a bit expensive here. This one goes for 250€ but i'm afraid it's a bit "old". Please if you can give me your opinion about this issue.

Yes it is worth it. It still runs all the latest OS etc. I'm glad I bought mine a few months ago. The HD is a good all round performer, and like you say the other devices around that are better/newer are a lot more expensive. When you can get most the features of the HD2 on the HD for half the price, why not buy the HD. That's the way I see it anyways. The price you stated does sound a bit much though, I'm sure you could get it much cheaper on ebay, but this could just be down to the crappy exchange rate here against the Euro.

Thanks for your reply. Since e-bay is out of the question because many of them don't ship out of their country and i also don't have a pay-pal account it doesn't leave much choise. I have seen the site and i know it's a lot cheaper but still not an option for me. I see that according to users the HD can (almost) do the same as the HD2 and i think i will go for it. Would like to have other opinions though.......

I purchased my blackstone last week after trading in my hero. The hero was a nice handset, i just didn't think android "was all that". I don't think the functionality of android is great, even 2.1. However i am running a the lastest blackstone henge rom on my device and i think its great.
The internal specification of the blackstone is the same as the hero if i'm correct and the hero is a relatively new device in comparison. Don't get eaten up by the snapdragon ghz band wagon, the touch hd still holds its own and imo is a great alrounder.
What requirements do you have for a handset when you look at buying one?
The HD is pretty good still, but a bit slow, and always was, for that sort of money I'd be inclined to buy a new acer S200 now and get the fastest Wm device available, very similar to the HD and are apparently very easy to flash other roms on to if the acer one is buggy.
Despite my disappointing experience with an F900, I would still be prepared to give them another try, I've had bad experiences with HTC and HP branded HTC's also.
Yes, HD is still front runner, specially if you find cooked ROM which has what you like.
And there's plenty of cooked ROMs, and more than half of them are still developing...
Price of 250 € is nice one, if device is really good preserved.

I can't comment on the price but I just bought one (t8285) on Ebay for 450 US precisely for the reason that a) I've never had one and didn't like the bulk of the Rhodium and b) there's an EnergyRom for it
The Telstra versions are rare in the US but work on the 850 range which is ATT's 3g band. I wanted to see if I could live without a keyboard and didn't want to pony up the big bucks to get an HD2 for Telstra until I signed off on the soft keyboard.
If you can afford it and find one you like I don't think you can go wrong. It's not the latest and greatest but it is a strong contender.

i agree with this !! this is my second hd i was planning to move over to the hd2 but i was way to big for what needed so i go one with the hd2 engery rom... as its just Ace...
The only bad part of it is Microsoft abandoning WM
Yes, I've seen some used ones in Ebay for $200 - $250. The Touch HD has everything (big screen, WiFi, GPS, FM radio, G-sensor, 5 mpix camera). It's a lot of hardware for that price.
Of course it runs Windows Mobile, which is dying right now. Sooner or later you'll have to move to Windows Phone 7 (vade retro) / iPhone / Android.
Any app you use (or God forbid, purchase) for Windows Mobile will not be transferable to any other phone in the future. Ask the developers if they will port the app and to what platforms.
You have a very good WM 6.1 ROM from KWBR, and a lot of WM 6.5 ROMs. I've used a few of them and am currently running a WM 6.5 with Manilla 2.5 and Opera 10.

Why dont get the mini HD?? it's about that price too?? got similar specs, in fact improved, and I think capacitive screen too?

hey guys new diamond 2 = 180$

does it worth it ?
you guys sujest me to buy this phone or get iphone?!
i really dont know to pay alot.
looking some good phone in max 250 $
so this phone is good ? the diamons 2 = sensitivty of iphone ?
what should i buy?
any 1 ? 40 views no one replay.
the diamond 2 is good phone ? right now i have the kaiser
but i wonder which is better
wm with diamond 2 or some magic or hero with android
I would get a 1gb android phone before I would but the TD2, but it is still a great phone, especially compared to the Kaiser.
TD2 is a good phone, but has issues with the earpiece (appears that it breaks easily) and in general, HTC touchscreens dont seem to be of a very good quality (-> Newton rings).
I think I would buy a Samsung Wave S8500 (because of the amoled display), if not, definitely an adroid device.
Go for the iphone!!! all of the reasons that i didnt buy one have been changed/fixed by apple and im ready to switch. Ill sell you my perfectly good but slightly used TD2 for 100.00. if you dont want the iphone, but ill tell you now, if you want to stay with the at$t rom it sucks, and as soon as you start flashing other roms, you might as well resign yourself to the fact that your gonna be dealing with lock ups, and constant reboots every day, if you use it alot. ITS NOT THE FAULT OF THE FABULOUS CHEFS THAT WE HAVE HERE, its the slow processor and the crappy hardware. So choose wisely, if you only want to spend 180 on 1+ year old technology (and thats ancient by todays standards) dont expect much. I was sorry that i spent the money to upgrade my Kaiser to the TD2, other than size, there wasnt much upgrade about it.
Hope that helps
Alan
I had a Kaiser and now have a TD2. Like the others have said. Its a good phone. (if you turn off the HTC UI) the battery lasts a little longer and the phone is more responsive.
Im about to upgrade will be probably getting a HTC Desire or HTC Desire HD
I have a TD2, picked it up new for about $150. Very good for the money, loaded Energy WM6.5 ROM with sense2.1 & it runs perfect & is quite fast in most tasks.
With the button mapping driver and a few other good tweeks it is a really easy device to use.
If you are experienced with tweaking HTC/WM devices then this can be a very capable device & a bargain if you hunt around for a clearance deal.
Most other options will be a lot more expensive but a TD2 is not a bad buy for the right money
