Just wondering, can you delete Excel.exe for example? As this can free a lot of space.
I never use powerpoint.exe for example, what happens if i delete this? Will the phone crash or is it only that you can;t start the program anymore?

I was wondering if there is a way to keep all of these damn stock programs from auto starting and running in the background? I downloaded Advance task killer and I always seem tons of crap running I did not start.
Would the only fix be to flash a new ROM on it?
I dont mess too much with task killers, but I believe some can autokill apps that you specify when they start running. You can also remove apps completely via command line if you don't use them at all.
autostarts. it's .99 in the market.
Alright. But nothing free huh? haha. Even after I kill it, some of the programs will still start up in an hour or so.

are the programs that keep popping up necessary?
If not, remove via command line or be willing to taskkill it, if it bothers you.
also, autostarts has different environment variables (start up, connection changed, usb plugged in, etc.) to specify when to kill what apps (I'm not pimpin it, I'm just sayin its a good program)
Oh. Maybe I'll get it, I mean its only 99 cents I have to figure out how to buy apps. Thanks though.
autostarts I can not find

I looked on the net, but I can not find the program. Can you link it?
I now use "ProcessKiller alias HTCDlg_killer" on my HTC TP2, but I do not see any killing.
Thanx in advance.

Some applications are SUPPOSED to be running all the time. Others the phone starts up so that their response time is better.
Arbitrarily killing applications is a sure-fire way to crash the phone. If you can be bothered to provide a list of what you see, someone can advise you what to leave alone.

Hi,
After downloading few free applications in my hero, some pictures and ads started popping out every few seconds in my screen. Mostly pictures of the Android depiction doing some stuff like eating or visiting places like Paris and stuff. Also, some advertisement to download videos.
How can I stop this from happening? Is there a virus scanner or a spam blocker I can use?
Please help.

Can't you just go into market and uninstall the apps you added?
Failing that, connect via adb and use adb shell to remove the apk files (presuming you're rooted).
If you aren't rooted or don't know about adb, ask or search. There are antivirus things available, but I'd just remove the apps.
Also, if you find the offending app, post its name here so others can avoid it (only if you find out which one).

Thank you for your reply.
Well, I was not sure which program installed this thing in my phone, so I un-installed all software that I downloaded. However, that did not resolve the issue. I still have the same problem.
Any advice?
Thank you..

Backup your contacts and other important media and factory reset the device maybe?
Thats a bit of a worry this! Not to scare you or anything, but that sounds like some form of virus/hijacking/trojan or something!
Why not install a "task killers" application and see if you can kill a particular process that is showing those ads.
If you find the right one, it might give you some indication what application created it - but do let us know if you do find out!
Or you can just write down the list of installed apps on your Hero here and then someone can take a look at the list?
Thank you guys. I found the problem, and it was due to the installation of a scientific calculator from the free market. Once I removed it, things went back to normal.
many thanks.
Do you fancy naming and shaming the app? Then no-one else will have to go through this again. Oh, and make sure you give it 1* and a negative comment on the market.
Perhaps we need an 'apps wall of shame' for any apps that do things such as this... Then we could look up any apps before downloading if they looked suspicious.

You might give us the name of the app so that others can get a chance to stay away from it?
I find the AdFree app invaluable in the fight againt annoying ads in other apps.

If you can't get the host file to download 1st time click Revert and then download the host file again. Should work.
So basically I had added a favorite to the sense tab and clicked on it while using free WiFi at McDonald's so the page it shows is the page where you accept the terms of service for the free WiFi. I have searched for it, but if I somehow did miss the answer I apologize in advance. I have tried removing the favorite from the tab & removing the favorite all together & then re-adding it and it still shows the wrong preview. I am guessing that there is a directory somewhere that I would be able to just delete the preview data. TIA for any help!!!
Bump I would love to know too.

That's a weird one. Did you try deleting it, then doing a soft reset, then adding it?
Have you looked in the Windows\Temporary Internet Files folder? Or maybe it's the Temp folder? See if the images for the shortcuts are cached in one of those folders. If so, you can just delete them and that should take care of it.
all the thumbnails are located in:
/Windows/Thumbnail
simply find the one you have and replace it with one you want or delete it. (the names are very long and make no sense, but in the end are simply .pngs.)
for a tut on this see:

Ok so I found & deleted the 1 that was giving me problems, but now it won't generate the new preview! I have tried a soft reset with no results. Is there a way to force it to create the new one? Thank again!

scratches head...sorry mate. it worked for me previously. did you save the file somewhere else before deleting it? sorry it isn't working out the way you/i had hoped...
I upgraded to Oprea 10 I think it is beta and I don't have this problem anymore, it seems to update the thumbnails often.
I recently put a new ROM on my phone and some reason my widget list is very limited.
I've installed about 5 clock widgets, but only fancy widgets has appeared on my widget list. I can open the program files for the others but they aren't on my widget list so can't use them.
The problem is not limited to clocks widgets.
Any help is much appreciated.
I have searched around but couldn't find anything with the words I used.

Are the widgets on the internal memory of the phone? Widgets (and I assume launchers but I don't know) have to be on the internal storage in order to be used. Go to settings>manage applications>whichever widget you want>move to internal storage if this is not the case. Hope I helped
Such a simple solution. Thanks for that, I'll make sure to set it to install everything on my phone from now on.
No problem Although quite a lot of apps work when on SD as well, so you may want to move the big apps (e.g. Angry Birds) to the SD.
Try installing from SD to phone and vice versa.
However installing everything on the phone, is not always the solution!
I'll keep games on the SD and everything else on internal. If things don't work from now on I'll atleast do this simple fix before posting.
Hello,
Has anyone created a comprehensive list of all the stock apps that can safely be removed from the M? The last time I attempted to remove everything that I wont use I ended up having to reinstall the rom because I deleted something that it seems was needed. If there is can you please link me? If not could someone please take the time to make one? All help is appreciated!

Yes something almost exactly like that. I did view that thread but am not sure that I could use that as an uninstall list. I don't know the difference between an uninstall and a freeze except to say that an uninstall will remove it from the device. My thinking was that if the phone needs the app it can be frozen, and not show up in the drawer, which is fine in some cases however, in my case I am wanting everything not needed removed for freeing up space for the large games I am using the phone to play.
