My wife flashed her hero to the official sprint 2.1. She had never rooted or flashed a custom rom before, so her going to the official 2.1 didn't really bother me much. However, now she's running into an issue with her data not working. A couple days ago she noticed she wasn't getting her e-mail. Strangely enough, mine quite working too (I'm on fresh 2.1.1). I rebooted my phone and mine started working. So I went to her wireless and network settings and turned off her data. I then turned it back on and after 30 seconds or so it said it was connected and everything started working just fine.
The strange part is there are no errors and even when the phone tries to check e-mail, it doesn't report any errors. Now, on my phone when this happened, my HTC Mail app threw a fit because it couldn't connect to the exchange server. Since I could refresh my gmail account and got no errors I thought it was just our exchange server. I signed into my account on my PC (for exchange) and it was in fact working fine. After I rebooted (just this one time as mentioned above) gmail kicked off with new mail and exchange connected fine.
Today, she has told me 3 times now that she went in and reset the connection (turn it off and back on) and a while later it would quit working again. She turns her phone off every night, but for good measure I am having her reboot it now.
Anyone else have this issue? She never had this problem on 1.5, so I don't think it's hardware. I've only had the issue once, but I'm also not in her area right now (tower related, maybe? My data borked when I was at home where she is at right now).
Thanks

This does seem like a tower problem. However, if you want to troubleshoot, you could always reset your data settings via the Sprint ## codes.
For data, enter this code: ##3282# on your Dial Pad. Give it a second and it'll ask if you want to view or edit your settings. Trouble shooting this problem would mean you have to Edit the settings, but in order to edit them you need your MSL code, which can be obtained by either contacting Sprint CS and asking them for it; or you can search around here on XDA and I'm pretty sure some people posted other ways to get your code.
Once you have your MSL code, choose edit when you get the pop up window and then click on your menu button -- there should be an option for you to choose reset -- enter your MSL code and your phone will reboot.
This may or may not fix your problem; I've had success whenever I've had data problems.
Hey thanks! I did a search for MSL and found a thread with a procedure to get it through CDMA workshop but the drivers don't want to work with Windows 7 x64.
However, my wife was complaining the other day that it takes a long time for her phone to start ringing when someone calls. I think I'll call sprint tonight when I get home and just tell them I need to fix that and see if they give me the MSL... Might kill two birds with one stone.

On the taking a long time to ring:
1) Move the ringtone off the SDcard into the phone, in some cases the SD card is to slow to read it fast enough. - Worked for a buddy of mine
2) There is a polling rate you can set when you get the MSL - but I have heard sprint forces a particular rate from the tower even if the phone has one set. - This will also decrease battery life.

This may be too obvious of an answer, but have you tried using the device self service tool and updating your profile and prl?

No problem, hope everything works out.
I had the same problem, took it to the sprint store (Waste of time!) and ended up hard resetting it, seems to have fixed the problem. you can hard reset by turning off the phone and then holding down the end, back and home buttons and selecting "clear storage" or "clear user data" (sorry, can't remember the exact wording). It will completely reset the software but it will wipe the data off your phone.
I got her MSL code via the logcat method that was just recently posted and reset her data and also changed her slot index. Although some people say that it is overridden at the tower, I also changed her priority. I updated her PRL as well. Before, it was ringing after I would hear about 3.5 rings, sometimes 4 full rings. Now it's ringing on the second ring. Also, her data was essentially turning off after about 30 minutes. After doing all of the above, she is saying it hasn't stopped working yet.
Thanks for all the suggestions, looks like it might be fixed.
Well it's still not fixed. She has it happen a couple times a day and now my phone is doing it too. It's not happening consistently that I can tell, just seems to randomly stop working.
Also, I'm on Fresh 2.1.2 and I'm getting some really really bad lag. I don't use any custom ringtones, just the ones that came with the phone and sometimes my phone will start to ring and the only way I know is because the vibrate starts. Then a good 3 seconds later I'm still getting a black screen as the phone is trying to tell me who it is.
I will randomly pick up my phone to surf the web too and it won't respond or do anything for like a good 10 - 15 seconds. I open up ES Task Manager and usually one of the mail apps is trying to update with like a 5% - 10% cpu usage, but that's all that has any CPU percentage. I'm not really sure what to try next. I've removed some apps that I don't really use and a couple that I just recently installed just to see if they are the culprit.
I'm using the Launcher Pro Beta too. Maybe that's it?
I've had a similar issue... only happened to me a couple of times since the update though... but I've just been turning "airplane" mode on and then off it turns off the radio and then turns it back on... seems to have worked for me...
again.. for me it's only happened a couple of times since the update to 2.1 so it could be a different issue.
I never thought of airplane mode. Doing what her and I are doing just reconnects data, not turning the radio on and off. I'm going to have her try that next and see if that fixes it. She says that she turns the phone off every night, but maybe she isn't some nights.
I have the most perfect running Hero on Damage Controls 2.08.1 rom. Last night I plugged it in for charging and this morning when I unlocked the phone I was greeted by "Error Code 67 - Registration Failure - PCS Vision user name or password is incorrect". I didn't change a thing. The phone half of the device still works but the data half has quit. What happened?? Anyone else have this problem?
Love some help.........
Thanks for your time........

Have you tried any of the following:
1. Reboot?
2. Update Profile in Settings->About Phone->System Updates
I received that error when attempting to USB tether.
Let us know what you find.
toggle airplane mode on off
Yes I tried to shut the phone down and rebooted and then I shut the phone down and took the battery out, put it all back together and rebooted and same thing. I just followed you directions and tried to update profile and while I have done this one thing in the past and it has taken some time, this time it was a five second check and dumped right back with the code 67 again. It's definitely not seeing the data information.
Plus it said "profile could not be updated - call customer service with code: 1012

I've received that before and it sort of fixed itself over the course of the day. Have you tried the Airplane mode on-off?
Could just be a Sprint thing, and not necessarily something on your end.
I just tried toggling the airplane mode on and off and then on again and still the same problem...........
If I have to call Sprint, what software do I tell them I'm running?
I would hate to go back to 1.5 to get this worked on.........

Like I said, try waiting it out for a little bit. If Sprint asks tell them 2.1 (just don't mention its not the official one!)
Plus from all my reading don't do the new OTA update either.............
I hope running DC would prevent them from running something on my phone in the background. I really love my phone the way it is - when it's working of course...
How's this for weird gentlemen? I activated my wifi to just check the device as I have that in my home. The device worked fine and had internet access and did it's thing via wifi. I decided to do the "Update Profile in Settings->About Phone->System Updates" and it worked through that method. Apparently I just needed to up date my profile. The Hero is back working perfectly like it always has.
This was a scare for me as this Hero works so well on DC compared to the horror stories I have read about official stuff. But thank you guys a million for your help and I owe you all a beer..........
Thanks so much........

While it is odd, sometimes phones just love to test our patience and knowledge. I always remind myself it is just a phone.
Hello, I noticed something a few days ago.
It seems if you're about to get the JI6 update OTA the "3G" symbol will stay in your status bar regardless of whether your'e connected to a wifi network.
My phone did this for two days straight and on the 9th I got the "Update Available" notification.
My phones never done that before so that's why I'm inferring the phone does this when an update is available.
Did the same exact thing to me as well. Was very strange to see it there even tho I was on WiFi... I also got the update about 2 days after I noticed the 3G staying in the top bar when on wifi
Really? My phone was doing this and I thought it was a bug. I had just installed Juice Defender so I thought it was messing my phone up so I uninstalled it and rebooted my phone.
Interesting. I already installed JI6 via Odin though... think it will prompt me again?
happened to my phone too.. i rebooted my phone but made sure that my wifi is off before rebooting.. seemed to fix it for me..
Well, you never know.
I havnt got the update yet, but for the past few days my 3G icon has been staying on when the Wifi is connected too.

Same
Not right now though. Weird

Updated, but don't have such thing before the update
Now that you mention it...
Actually, I haven't update yet and I just noticed my 3G indicator staying on while on WiFi also. I don't recall it doing that before. Don't know if the two are related, but I will let you know what happens.
I am using Bionix 1.7 (Based of the Official JI6) and my 3g Icon goes away
Means you are receiving something from t-mobile....so essentially tmo was sending you the update, which is sent by the network....and I imagine since it was large is why it was on for a couple of days....
Send a mms from your phone while on wifi.....you will see your 3G come on to send the message then go away when done....
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
well I've yet to receive the update so I guess I'll look out for this when it does come...
Hi, I really hope somebody might be able to help me here.
I got my HTC DHD on Tuesday and it was working fine till today. For the last 4 hours it shows 'no service' (i.e. no network coverage/no phone). Everything else is working fine. I've tried switching my SIM card to my old HTC HD and it worked fine, I could make/receive calls. I also tried airplane mode on/off, restart, taking out the battery, plugging to pc, plugging into power socket, even hard reset - the problem still exists, like the phone module is off for some reason. WiFi works fine btw. All settings look fine. The phone doesn't have a scratch on it, brand new, never been dropped. I'm really upset by this issue - the phone is just 3.5 days old and such an issue appeared. Doesn't look promising (
Any suggestions apart from the obvious 'return to the shop and wait for ages to get it repaired'?
Just to add, this had been happening to me as well for the last 3 or 4 days. My DHD is only 11 days old and was working fine untill tuesday when it started to say no service. It seems to display no service randomly and then just kicks back in and works no problems for a few hours. My text messages have also started to be delayed and i'm often getting them 2 hours later than the time on the actual message.
Have you tried to set your phones on GSM only and see if that helps? Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Network mode

Hello all,
Quick question. Is anyone losing Google Sync / Data when on Wifi ?
Happens at home and work. Never had an issue with my GS3 or One X. On cell service it works fine.
update 11/24
Seems as though its a pretty widespread issue. Also , it is an issue with the connection it self, not just google sync.
I opened up a "google issue" , if you are having the same problems I recommend posting on the thread. It can be found here:

I have the exact same problem. But it only happens at home. At home we've wep and at work wpa2. Never had an issue with my GS2. On cell service it works fine for me too.
Is android 4.2 incompatible with 128-bit WEP???
This is driving me nuts! Any ideas community??

I've noticed this too but seems to only be when the phone is sleeping? I'll turn screen on and bars will be gray and then turn blue. Did you guys turning off wifi optimization in wifi settings? I might try that next. It's some sort of power saving

hey guys,
I actually put in a google issue that seems to be picking up some steam.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40065
I have no clue what causes it at this point. It doesnt happen on all networks. Happens on my work network which is open / unsecured.
Also does it on my inlaws network which is wpa2 encrypted. However my home network which is also wpa2 encrypted is fine.
I recommend posting on the google issue to raise awareness
I added my experience, it seems to me like it's keeping wifi alive but not the Google connection. I have no issues on a Nexus 7 running 4.2 so it's not my router either but could be something specific to Nexus 4 hardware. I might try changing wifi sleep policy to never to see if at least this way HSPA will be connected when screen is off.

Anybody not having this issue? It's really annoying and for some reason even if I set wifi to stay on when plugged in or never it takes forever to disconnect so I still don't get alerts. Definitely appears to be an issue with 4.2 so i guess we just have to wait and hope it is fixed in next update.

It's happening to me both with my N4 on 4.2 and also with my Transformer Prime, recently updated to 4.1.1. Only on specific networks.

It actually happens to me on both new Nexus 4 and Nexus 7. Happens on home network (WPA2).
Any chance this could be a Google server issue? My Nexus 7 on 4.2 and GS3 running CM10 4.1.2 doesn't have issue either just my Nexus 4. Not sure what's causing it on my Nexus 4 but it's driving me crazy.

I'm pretty sure this is a general Wifi issue, and not limited to Google services. I've noticed that when the Wifi goes to sleep, I no longer receive incoming calls in GrooveIP or Sipdroid. I also don't receive email alerts until I turn on the screen, and the wifi re-activates.
EDIT: I ran a simple test. Loaded GrooveIP, called GV # from another phone, GrooveIP rang. Let the phone sit for 10 minutes to fall asleep. Called again. Didn't ring. I then loaded up Advanced Wifi Lock to prevent the phone from going asleep. The first call worked, and so did the one after 10 minutes. So, this definitely seems like an issue that impacts any service depends on a reliable Wifi link - not just Google's Sync services. I ran the same test with Sipdroid, and got identical results.

That's a bad example because GrooveIP uses GTalk on the backend so you're still using Google Services. What makes this more puzzling is I went to a Brooklyn Nets game last night and they have crazy fast open WiFi at the place while my phone was connected, it appears that all notifications worked even when the screen was off. I was too busy watching the game to pay much attention but I did get emails, etc. while the screen was off and I was on Wifi. The main difference between that WiFi and my home Wifi is the one at the arena had no security at all.
I've been playing around with my router and tweaking settings but nothing is working and I'm pretty sure this is a phone software issue. What I want to find is someone with 4.2 on a Nexus 4 who is NOT having an issue. I'm starting to wonder if this is an app or Google Service sync related issue.
My Nexus 7 running 4.2 does NOT have any issue on the same exact Wifi so I'm wondering if it's some app or setting on my phone that's causing this
For me it definitely seems to occur more on unsecured networks.
Not only is it google sync but the connection in general.
Anybody with this issue brave enough to try a factory reset? If it doesn't get solved soon I'll probably flash CWM recovery, do a nandroid and then do a factory reset to see if that fixes it. At least that way if it doesn't I can restore backup.
Anyone want to try now?

Weird! So you did a factory reset and still nothing? Did you still have the issue before you restored apps? I mean like completely stock with just what comes on the phone. If you still have the issue with that, then we know it's not app related.
I might also try downloading and reflashing the system image...maybe something got screwed up in the 4.2 update??

Strange then that it might fix this issue since the wifi module is stored in system and he's not overwriting it so something in the kernel itself
