Well sounds like it might be hardware. If you've done a few hard resets and tested before installing any software and the problem is still there sometimes, then I'd say it's hardware.
The m/board on the Hermes is not one that you can really work on with ordinary soldering tools. A repair shop could check by using a heat gun to check the contacts on the Mic. If that fails then it's likely either the mic coil or a problem with the contacts at or coming from the USB connector.
Mike

I say something more. Now i hear myself on voice note but really quiet like 1/10 normal volume.

Yes, but even with an open circuit / damaged coil, cracked connection, you can sometimes have sufficient leakage current to get a faint response from things like microphones and speakers. I still think it's probably hardware - but thoroughly check all the software possibilities eg clean install, stock ROM etc.

Hm i open hermes but im noob in that stuff so everythink look fine for me with microphone. I clean that think to protecting microfone. The problem of couse dont disappear. But.. its look like always when I plug in usb to spv, microphone start working fine.. Not always but moust of time it is solution.. If it is a hardware what i should to recommand to replace in service? Microphone?

ignore me, re-read what you put and decided i was a nab

Bad sound quality

There was a thread here about that the voice from the earpiece is distorted. I experienced to have a similar problem. From the first day the sound was excellent but in 2 months it changed to distorted and then become very-very weak. At the same time the sound was good if a loudspeaker is on or if the hands-free is connected. Thus, I supposed that the contact becomes bad. To fix it, I disassembled the device. The *.pdf-file how to do that is included (33 megs). When the contacts were formed so they touch firmly the corresponding places on the printed board and the device was assembled, I heard nice voice from the earpiece.
So, in some cases the problem with the sound may be due to weak contacts. I suppose the contacts may become poor because the material for the outputs on the earpiece is not so elastic plus influence of vibration from the vibromotor plus influence of humidity.
Backup the system before disassembly because during this the backup battery may discharge completely!
Sorry wasn't logged on...
Thanks a lot I got this problem long time ago but I don't know how to disassemble it so I always try to shake it to fix ......
Great ! Very useful
Thanks
thanks for the guide..... very useful
Where can I find the 33meg pdf? I need to disassemble the device too...

That is what I thought th first time I opened my MDA Compact! Believe me I am the very first one I did when the device first came out! After lots of research let me tell you this:
IT IS NOT THE CONTACTS! IT IS THE SPEAKER! The membrane is of low quality when you open the device and "fixing" the contacts it will only make it to work for a few phone calls up to a couple of days at most! The speaker is burnt by the high amount of volume the motherboard of JAM gives to the speaker! If you want to solve your problem then you ll have to find a Nokia Center and buy a speaker for a Nokia 6610! Nokia 6610 and HTC Magician have exactly the same speaker! The only thing you have to do is to change nokia's black cloth ribbon on the top of the speaker with HTC's black rubber get it into your magician and there you are! You have a perfect sound again! My only advise is to use the call volume just a click less than the maximum volume so you won't blow away your new speaker!
I dissasembled and reassembled my MDA compact more than 11 times trying fixing the contacts with no permanent result! After replacing the speaker with a Nokias's 6610 speaker everything seems to work like a dream for at least a month now!
Its much more easier to get Nokia's spare parts than HTC's! The speaker cost me 18euros!
any chances you could post us nice pictures of these manipulations ?
I would love to do that but please I don't think that my magician could survive one more disassembly! In case of replacing a friend's speaker next week who has the same problem I will make sure I get those pics! Magician is extremely easy to be taken apart! The only hard parts in the removing process are the upper backplate which has to be removed very carefully in order to be fitted back in its place afterwards and the front faceplate where you will need something very thin like a thin knife or even better a razor to take it away from the black plastic on the sides!
where is the link to the pdf
Hey guys,
I cannot see the link to the pdf. I need to disassemble my Jam too.
Thanx, Martido
Sorry, I found it. Just woke up....
Oh, thank god, I'm not the only one, with this problem. But first i have two questions? Will i loose my warrenty when i open the device? Can O² discover that i opened it?
Did this contact fix solve the problem entirely, or not? Because katsj says the problem is the speaker!
Thank you in advance, such a great community!

Edit:
I read the PDF File and i have to say .. this is simlply impossible! You can cause so much damage .... i dont know where to begin. One small mistake and you can't forget your PDA. I think this is highly to dangerous. Is there no easier way to solve the problem ... some ideas??
Or do the pictures lie and it isnt that complicated??

My sound disappears during call...
Strange, during a call after a few minutes my sound disappears. I can hear the other caller, the other calleer can't hear me anymore...
But now I found a strange solution: when I pull up the volume button n the left a few times (it was already at maximum!) my sound is back!
Has anyone the same experience or a better solution?
I think when you pull up the volume there is this small tone and you hear this tone from the loudspeaker.
After you hear the tone, you cant here anything again, right?
I'm driving really crazy, i loved this XDA Mini since this prob occured and i want to find a solution as soon as possible ! I really dont know what to do
When i push against sd-card slot from inside, i hear everything .. again, so this is just a really small prob ..
I hope sb. find a solution quickly otherwise ... i dont know

I think it's a contact problem, so maybe the problem isn't that small... I don't want to open my device.
I don't think it has anything to do with the ROM or with the software.
(I wish it would, then there would be a solution in the end)
I had this problem too and found a fix:
I assume that while you are making a call, there is no audio from the earpiece. While on the call, adjust the volume up or down with the volume slider button. if you hear faint beeps and faint audio right after the beeps, your earpiece is working but there is a software glitch caused by the headphone jack.
Reset your device. Make a call (i.e. to your voicemail) and make sure there is audio incoming. Connect the (wired) headset. Disconnect the headset and you shoud now hear audio from the earpiece. You may have to reconnect/disconnect the headset a few times.
thanks
thanks for the pdf. ill check it right away!
U ROCK
THX GUYS>>>U ROCK...........I was soo worried.....
thx again..
Thanx dudes for the nokiaspeaker tip!
Just received my on ebay ordered nokia speaker and within a few minutes I fixed mine magician thanx to the pdf & already gainted knowledge on this page!
I bought this phone a year ago for a very nice price because of the damaged speaker and now at last I repeared it just for €3,- (instead of sending it to Orange risking over €100; I`m Dutch ya know )
hi guys...pulling this one out from the past....my magician has all the symptoms above, but with no luck, the replacement speaker did not do the trick...any other ideas/details/downloads....anything to get the audio back???\
BTW, i can hear glitches of sound if i play with the volume tab. That is to say, if i push it up, i hear the tone "ding" and i can hear the voice on the other end for a split second! So i must be close, no????

Dopod 818 pro Speaker Problem

I've been using Dopod 818 pro since the end of December 2005. A week ago, a problem suddenly came up. The speaker of this PPC does not work anymore.
I tried to play music using windows media player, or real player -> Does not work
I tried to use the speaker phone -> Does not work
I can't even hear anything when I make a call or receiving a call
It works when I plug in the headset. everything works perfectly.
It plays the ringtone when someone call me. (Very soft sound)
Is this a hardware problem? or is there anyway that I can do to fix it.
I bought the phone overseas (I'm located in Australia now). It takes a lot of effort to send it overseas for warranty.
Thank you
Do a soft-reset. If that doesn't help, do a hard-reset. If that doesn't work , do a ROM re-install. If it still doesn't help, then you have a faulty unit.
I've done soft reset
I haven't done hard reset
->haven't had any backup program.
Is there any free solution for backup software?
Thanks
i ve solution
well for this solution u must disassemble the phone. look at the handsfree jack and apply a jumper to the two front points of the connector. it will solve ur problem

dopod 818 pro speaker issues
I have run into the same issue with my 818 pro and my Himalaya...The fix is always uninstalling one or more applications that may be causing the problem. I assure you it's very unlikely that it is a hardware issue...Uninstall all applications and you should get the sound back..
I have the same problem with my 818 pro. I have already done the hard reset-no change, tried blowing air in and out through the headphone jack, silicone spray and playing with the plug. It appears to be a hardware issue with the sensor mechanism inside so it always thinks it has a headset connected--poor design.
Did anyone else figure out a solution for this (other than returning for repair?) This happened to me this weekend. Suddenly happened after I was using the headphone for an hour while I was rollerblading. Now I can't answer any calls without either the bluetooth or standard headphone. I can hear the ring go off, but just can't use it as a regular handset. I'm sure everyone agrees that this is a hardware issue with a poorly built headphone jack. But while I'm waiting for the retailer to restock the dopod 818 and send me a replacement, does anyone know of a hack that would allow the phone to activate the headphone AND the phone speaker simutaneously? The reasoning is I think the phone currently thinks there is a headset constantly being plugged in, so it deactivates the loud speaker as well as the phone speaker. But if there is a hack that lets WM5 to use the handset speaker and the headphone jack simutaneously, then at least I can answer phone calls without having to use the headset. Of course, this won't be a permanent solution, but it may bridge me through these tough times with the dopod.
I have to say, I still love this phone, but my patience is wearing a bit thin. First, it's the disappearing SD card (which I'm not even sure if it's solved yet), then I was having some problems with sending MMS messages, now this. :x
I had the speaker problem with my Jam. It is apparently a common problem with PPC phones, the mechanical switch in the headphone jack gets stuck. I was able to get mine to work again by plugging in the headphone jack a few times. If that doesn't solve the problem...well you know the drill
There is nothing to do but exchange it--I was never able to find a work around either. Sorry.
I had problem the speaker on my HTC Charmer. I send it for repair and they replaced the speaker, with in like a week+.
However, now there are some other problems. It seems that when I try to use the speaker (play songs, phone, games, etc), the battery drain like mad and the unit gets very hot. The unit drain so much energy that the battery will die off even if I had the unit on AC power. Going to send it back to repair AGAIN!

I had the exact same problem and suddenly unpluging the jack works for me..
this "sudden unplugging" thing won't work with Prophet, the Prophet's buzzer(speaker) problem is very common, the same thing happened to me, cost me 12$ in iran to change that part
818pro speaker problem Hardware related
I had the same problem.
Speaker unit in phone burns out very quickly.
If you have warranty - your lucky.
In my case since I bought in Singapore and Use in Israel, I had to fork out 50USD to get a new speaker unit.
Tal
What you do is open the Comm Manager, tap the "phone" icon to set to flight mode. Then, turn on again.... that should do the trick
I don't know what planet most of you guys are on.
The Prophet has a common problem with the rear speaker - it's a hardware issue as X_Farhad has pointed out.
There's no need to hard reset, and what's the crap about flight mode?
Yes, some can have a problem with the headphone socket and the solution for that is in this thread.
Mostly it's the speaker itself. The solution is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=281331
I've found a bit of sponge works better than paper - to see what I'm on about - go to the thread I've posted here.
Speaker issues and phone hangs
I also have similar issues with my Xda Neo. The speakers stops responding when i get incoming call. I mean the phone dosent ring. Then if i try any music player or ringtons, there is no sound. I have to soft reset. Sometime when i get incoming call, it dosent ring and it also hangs the phone. Then i have to hard reset. I had to use that sponge over the speaker and then the speaker works. But sometime it still hangs. Looks like either HTC or Windows Mobile has major issues. I dont know how long this sponge thing will work. Are there any solutions..

Tal,
I have dopod 818 pro and having the same phenomenon like others, now I'm abroad and can not check the thing with the headset.
Can you tell me please where can I get service in Israel (I bought mine in Thai).

Dear all and administrator
can you give me solution about my dopod sound problem?
1. I just can used ring tones for receiving new messaging from the my dopod system ( I can't not used ring tones from my gallery/downloaded sound/ring tones application )
2. When new message coming and phone call coming, the sound is very small (can your's give me information how to setting that so the volume can be more loud).
Thank you very much for your's attention, I'm very apprenticed if the solution can being send to my private e-mail address at [email protected]
anyone have solutions on this issue? thanks

Strange sound issues (this is a tough problem!)

Hey all, im glad this site is up its been great finding what i can really do with my wizard!
here is he issue im having. the wizard has 3 different speakers and 1 microphone. 2 side speakers (used to play music, or speaker phone) and the 1 main speaker (used for hearing calls). none of the 3 work when im making calls, listening to music, alarms, or any of the "screen click" sounds and the microphone doesnt work on phone calls or note recordings. however, the one time the speakers do work is when i have an incoming call, i tried listening to see which speaker its coming out of and it sounds like all 3. the headphone jack still works so thats what ive been using. pressing the speaker phone button while on a call (that i cant hear) doesnt do anything, the UI doesnt show any change or switch to indicate its changed to speaker phone and the "speaker on" button doesnt change to "speaker off" like it used to.
originally i thought this was a ROM issue, i was using the manufacturer's ROM (cingular 8125, unlocked for tmobile service) so i followed the lovely tutorial and switched my phone over to the t-mobile 2.26 ROM. this had no effect, so I then upgraded to XDA's WM6 ROM and while i love this new ROM it still did not fix my sound issue.
im stumped, any help anyone can offer would be great. I wanted to post here before i crack it open to look at all the insides.
same problem!
I'm having the exact same problem! I just noticed the problem recently, when my phones alarm didn't sound. I'm running a custom cooked rom from mattk_r 318 kitchen, but I don't think the rom is the problem, as i am indeed still hearing sound from the head phone jack. I don't think the internal speakers are broken, as when a call comes, the phone rings, and the sound come out from the speaks as mentioned above!
Help!
dropped?
have you ever dropped your phone?
I have dropped mine a couple times and thats the only cause I can come up with. But this never seemed to be a problem until recently.
no major drop recently.
i havent really dropped it recently at all.and for some reason i dont think the hardware is the problem, because i tryed voice recorder, and it records my voice and i can play it
back through the headset.so that confirms that the mic and both spealers work (rings
when incoming call). i really dont want this to be the downfall for my wizard! is there
any key registry entrys for sound maybe that we could have a look at? btw my wizards a G4 if thats makes any difference.
please help!!
mine is a g3, if it were a software issue then reflashing should have solved it. right? i dont know enough about the internal workings of the wizard to know what a flash actually does.
?
Anyone have any ideas on what I can try?
Well, a flash is an OS upgrade/downgrade. It contains drivers, programs, registry settings, things of that sort. Sounds like your problem is hardware related, nothing to do with the OS itself.
I assume the warranty on that baby has already expired, so you're pretty much on your own.
Two options come to mind:
1. The obvious... buy another Wizard
2. The not so obvious... buy another Wizard with a broken screen and take all of its guts out and put them in yours.
A third option also exists... (ther's always a third way)
Mind you, this is for INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY! In no way do I condone the below mentioned method.
Get a new line of service with Cingular and buy the Wizard to use with it. Exchange their boards, swap the IMEIs using the Wizard Service Tool utility found on these boards, cancel the line of service and return the "new" Wizard.
Sound issues
I have had a similar problem but located my problem to the microswitch which is in the headphone socket. Might be worth trying pulling the headphones in and out a few times to see if it allows the microswitch to release (if that is the problem?)
Steve
The wizard is magic
Some how my wizard seemed to repair it self. Its sound is working again...i didn't reflash or do anything special....weird. I think its because the phone had a good vibrate....ive got one of those speaker docks for the wizard..i put it in there...got a phone call and talked and stuff...but while it was in there (with the mic plugged it) it vibrated alot...maybe that flicked the switch mentioned above?
weird..this phone never ceases to amaze me. I just hope it doesn't happen again... because it appears to be emerging as a problem as the wizards get older?
Keep up the good work guys!
LOL!!!!!!!!! its so simple and yet so amazingly smart
wow, Steve you are the most amazing person EVER!
I put the headphone piece in about 1/10 of the way and slowly made a swirling action as i slid it all the way in, clicked the start button on wizard and i heard the "click" for the first time in a month!
Thanks!
I tried different options to get my sound back, no luck so far
Problem started after using the headset-connector to connect it to an FM-Transmitter.
After reading this thread, my guess is that the "micro-switch" is in a wrong position. So I opend my MDA, but can't find any "switch" in that connector.
Is there some more info about that connector, a connection-diagram perhaps ?
what worked for me was inserting the headset jack in roughly, robbing each side of the headset jack to try to hit the "switch". that might work for you.
Yes!!! Thank you a lot!
I have the same problem, no sound in my speakers, just vibrate and sound in handsfree. I figure out that this micro-switch could be the problem, but I haven't know how to solve it. Thank you once again, I love my SPV!! and this community.
Fixed!
Woohoo!
This problem just cropped up for me on the weekend.
Thankfully it wasn't long before I happened across this thread.
About a minute of persistent jiggling the microphone jack did the trick.
Thanks!

dropped phone!!

yesterday i dropped my phone & i have now lost the ability to talk or hear while making a call. when i recieve a call my phone rings but i cannot have any type of conversation. i also get no sound from media player etc. if i use a bluetooth connection or a wired earpiece it is fine so i am a little confused as to what is wrong.
does anyone have any suggestions?
if it works with bluetooth then you have obviously dislodged the contacts of the speaker or broke the connection, open it up and make sure the connectors are still making contact find any post by mike shannon and click on his webpage link and download the wizard service manual. That will show you how to take it apart and also where the speaker and connections are located
thanks
i have the manual already so i will open her up tonight & have a look see!
i just found it odd that the person i am talking to (but cannot hear) cannot hear me either is the microphone & speaker on the same circuit perhaps?

Hey, if you've already done it - how'd it go?
I went through a similar ordeal and the earpiece stopped working. I did a soft reset and VOILA! Everything back to normal.
Then the same thing happened just recently without any physical shock to the phone. Had to do a hard reset - but it worked!
No the microphone isnt on the same circuit, but they are connected to the circuit boards in the same way, the speaker and microphone just sit on contacts rather than hard wired to the board so they can be easily replaced.
Its possible that the shock has moved them. I had this problem with my first wizard with the speaker, but it wasnt the contacts in my case.

Answering speaker - Problem

Hy guys.
I bought this nice HTC Magician and it has a little problem. Speaker at the back of case works very well( I can play music and all), but the small speaker at the front panel( above the screen) for answering the calls doesn't work... You can't hear anything...
When I turn ON Speaker(back side) I can hear the caller, but and everyone around me....
And I can also normaly use it when headset is on...
In the mobile service they said that they have changed front speaker and that problem is somewhere on the motherboard...
Is there any salvation for this...

Assuming the service centre have changed the speaker for a good one, and they have cleaned the contacts on the motherboard, then they are most likely correct that it is a motherboard fault. Quite an unusual fault as normally earpiece speaker problems are either poor contact with the board or a faulty earpiece speaker.
If it is the motherboard, then a repair is not economic and could turn out to be impossible in some cases. Clearly the sound circuit is OK in as much as you get output using an earpiece. However, there could be an amplifier fault or a simple crack in the board connections. Without testing there is no way to know.
You could dismantle and check the connections (often the speaker has springy contacts that touch onto the motherboard). You can tweak them out a little and claen the motherboard contacts. BUT, if you trust the service centre then it would be a faint hope. If you don't trust the service centre (sometimes they give excuses because the job would take too much time for the amount they can charge - particularly on older devices), then you could dismantle (Always risky - unless you are familiar with this kind of thing - it could end up worse than when you start!!)
Mike
Mike, thank you very much...
I supposed that they probably didn't check everything as they should. Because hey're not officialy service or even to have experince with this devices. When servicer saw Magician he said " Oh this is complicated"... That's why I think that they even don't know how to fix the speaker or that they have put ther right one speaker. I didn't want to give them device to testing because I saw that they don't have experince as I said.
So I'm taking it, nesxt week, to service where I know that people are professionals...
I'll give feedback what i've done..
