Well I was so happy yesterday. I received my new MWg Atom (great phone BTW) and was all set to set up GPRS. Unfortunately, Afghan Wireless Communications Company does not support this device. They do all of their GPRS setting via OTA SMS. This is a very long shot, but I was wondering if anyone knows what the manual GPRS setting are for AWCC or Roshan in Afghanistan. The Auto Configurator does not have either of these networks. Pakistan is the closest country I could find in the list.
Bobby
sorry dude, all you can find about those networks is to call customer service..
they should help you out with a device wich needs manual settings...
Thanks for the reply, but I've already been down that road. They just hang up when you mention your device is not Nokia, Samsung or Motorola. They insist my phone doesn't support GPRS, but of course it does. Also, I erased all of the settings and got connected, but it is very slow (8Kbps max). I believe I'm connected to their GPRS, but they also have an INTERNET profile which is supposed to be faster.

Maihan,
Thanks for the reply. I'd already configured the phone like you described in your post. Actually, I have successfully used three different settings
APN: wap
Username: awcc
Password: 1111
Proxy: 10.100.1.52 (port 80)
*limited to HTTP traffic only. Slow to start, but fast when it recognizes DNS
APN: internet
Username: blank
Password: blank
APN: blank
Username: blank
Password: blank
* both these connections are slow. Speed test show 2.8Kbps MAX
AWCC shows that it connects at EDGE speed, but the connection is much slower than regular GPRS. Seems like it wasn't worth the cash to have the phone. What speeds are you getting? Also, it appears that after 1700hrs, I can't even get a connection. I really wanted to use AWCC to replace the high cost internet service I subscribe to now. I was at least hoping to get at least 56Kbps service out of this.
If you have any other advice please reply. Thanks.
Bobby
AWCC GPRS
Dear Bobby,
Hope you are fine and doing your best,
Thanks for sharing with us your settings,
I have tested these all settings and have checked my speed, the speed of AWCC is very slow, my average speed with all three settings is between 1 -12 kbs.
I don’t think so your phone is bad because sometimes AWCC get hang and the internet doesn’t work for while.
Maihan Nijat
anyone have manual settings for Roshan?
Perhaps you can find it on the GPRS/Internet Connection Settings for the whole world thread
I use AWCC with much success, $20 per month unlimited. I only use it to check email and chat with Palringo, so I dont need much speed. I use my gmai+google voice to send and receive txts from home. Some of my guys use Roshon and have good luck as well. I am in Kandahar with good coverage, and the settings posted above by besjr69 have worked on both networks.
thanks -- good information. I'll be in Herat Provence soon.
I heard talk of 3G last year - any insight from someone on the ground?
AWCC sucks big time. It costs 20 usd per month, unlimited, crappy speed. You can get your emails though and sometimes check Facebook .
1. send message to 999 with text: GPRS
2. wait for 24 hours
3. APN: internet (everything else blank)
ROSHAN
i'm just trying that right now. Other than the APN, i saw that you must activate GPRS by sending message to 167 with text: GPRS on
http://www.afghanistanforums.com/index.php?action=printpage;topic=323.0
hope it helps.

APN: internet
everything else leave default and ensure phone internet service turned on
roshan is... expensive...
There was some news of 3G coming in 2011 to Afghanistan and the government was in talks with the carriers. The carriers are concerned that their investment in infrastructure could be wasted by attacks on towers. I doubt it will happen this year and if it does it will probably just be Kabul.

Depends on how you use it...
I have had a 1,k AFS scratch card loaded on my phone for 3months. still have about 350AFS on it. I use it to call local Roshan #'s mainly and RARE calls stateside after 9pm afghanistan time. I've done maybe 15 sms msgs on it to the USA.
BUT yes GPRS data is stupid $$$
as of 04/07/2011
GPRS Rates: A fee of 0.10 Afs is applicable per 10 KB download in Afghanistan.
So 1 AFS per KB, a 1k AFS card is $23ish USD do the math...
MIGHT be cheaper @ the Bazaar or via online top up but don't think so

Thought I read Kabul had it (April `11 time frame) but I'm way down in Kandahar so we are just glad to have service
Cause yes, they used to shut down cell towers at night to keep them from getting attacked.

What are the speeds like on Bagram, and how fast do the Roshan cards deplete? I currently have a Roshan Sim in my HTC but didnt even know I could use data!
I wonder if you (or any expert else) can tell me how it is configured on Galaxy S2 phones? I can't find the setting for such GPRS details?

Good luck.
Do not forget, that you have to subscribe to data services (it will not work with WAP)
thanks
Okay thanks everyone.
I've got the settings as:
Cellular line (GPRS)
Access point name: internet.com
user name: wapuser1
password: wap
domain: (blank)
under advanced: Use server-assigned IP address, software compression off, IP header compression off. Server tab: use server-assigned addresses
Under GPRS settings i have
CHAP authentication (note i also tried PAP without sucess); and class 10 (which shouldn't matter).
Now mys CSD line type settings (not sure how much this matters because I don't know what CSD is):
Data rate: 9600 (v.32)
Connection element: non-transparent
Any other settings that might be configured wrong?
As for having to have a WAP account - my understanding is that all phone accounts are on a pay-per-use basis unless a specific plan is purchased.
Thanks again everyone,
Sean
oh.
I see what you mean now - sorry, I read it wrong the first time. I have to subscribe to a data service plan - the phone will not do WAP on its own. Do you know why that is? The cost on Rogers is very high for a data plan while it is much more reasonable for WAP phones. I really only need the WAP - not the rest of the internet. Is there no way of getting just WAP?
YES, we all now about Rogers prices
I actually switched to Fido, but still maintaining Rogers account for other purposes.
I am not sure about using I-Mate with WAP, but I think by using special WAP browser it should be possible. Sorry cannot be more help for you.
ARRRGGGGHHHHH
I've just spent a ton of time researching whether it was possible to use my XDAII to dial-in to my work. I mean the phone is a modem/phone/computer so it has all the hardware present.... At work there is a RAS that would allow me to pick-up my e-mail and surf the internet. I do it with my laptop connected through a land-line all the time. while connecting over a GSM line would be slower than a GPRS connection it would be a heck-of-a-lot cheaper and it would be more mobile than my laptop and no need for a landline!!! Anyway, turns out that beautiful ROGERS AT&T service does not allow CSD on their system (if anyone knows a way around this please please please share it with me!!). I guess, the idea is to force people to subscribe to their expensive GPRS data plans.
i would love to get all I can out of my XDAII but I'm not sure at this point if I can justify the extra $25 month for 3mb of data with Rogers or the $25 month for the 5mb of data from FIDO... both of these providers are crazy expensive (plus, add the cost of the $6.95/mth access fee I'd be required to pay for FIDO). Now, if I had a normal phone which only did WAP then it would cost me about $7 for 1mb - not a lot of data but a more reasonable rate.
So, that's where I'm at.... if anyone out there knows of a good plan for data usage - or better yet a way to do CSD on Rogers please let me know. Noviur, or anyone, if you know of a WAP browser program that would allow me to use WAP on Rogers please point me in that direction.
Thanks,
Sean
PS. Just a little disappointed that after all the money spent on this beautifull phone I'm now limited in its use so that Rogers can continue to make more money on me besides what they make for my high-speed internet, digital cable and 2 mobile phone plans.
you can not bit 50CAD unlimited from Fido. In states it is the same amount of money, may be jsut little bit less and only from T-Mobile (based on references from my friends )
5Mb will not make you happy, sorry to tell you... my avarage is about 17Mb per month....
If i can help you in anything with solving this - let me know.
Thanks Noviur,
Do you know if FIDO allows CSD? If they do I'd consider switching. How do you find the FIDO reception - I've heard that it can be problematic and they don't have as large a coverage area as Rogers.
Where in Canada are you?
Toronto
me too
in some places Fido even beter than Rogers..., such as Steeles & Leslie
In some places the same s...t, such as Bayview & 16th, or Weldrick between Bayview & Spadina...
Let's put this way - the quality of service is better, the service is almost the same, bu limited to the geographic areas... for example i am stil using my Rogers, when going for a weekend up north...
Downtown is very good receiption...
Tell me if you need me more specific...
BUT do not forget, that is is very difficult to bit 45 unlimited+50 unlimited itnernet...
The quality of service must be better with Fido - Nothing could be worse than Rogers.
I too head up north frequently (just about every weekend) but my phone doesn't get reception up there anyway - Neither Rogers or Fido (now Bell gets perfect reception).
Right now I'm on a $20/mth plan that gives me adequate telephone minutes - I get 150 minutes during the day and unlimited evenings and weekends starting at 7pm... that seems to work for me. Jumping to $95/mth would be a big increase that I'm not sure I could/should pay.
Noviur,
Do you know if FIDO has CSD? If they do then you can dial-in to any ISP or RAS server - while it would be much slower than GPRS it would only use your telephone minutes and you wouldn't have to pay the GPRS fees. For me it would be amazing because then I could collect my e-mails, messages, etc. from my work just like i do with my laptop.
I am not sure about it... I think a raised this question some time ago with CSR because of the KSE Fax soft, and was told that Fido does not support CSD... But the best place to check that would be www.howardchui.com forum....

Anytime I have switched to another unlocked GSM phone my TXT messaging always worked by default (someone correct me if I am wrong) but the message desk # is in the SIM Card.
I have the same exact plan as you do and probably the same SIM (blue one)
Does TXT messaging work on other phones?
I called Customer Service and they had accidently turned off the text messaging. Now I can send, but I still can not get pics.
to make matters worse, I can not connect to the Internet. I keep getting a message that says,
"Cannot conect for an unknown reason....."
Before speaking to customer service, I could connect. I had not entered any settings and I could connect.
I tried the above settings and get the same message.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Java - Would you believe that is exactly what happened? They "accidentally" turned it off. I had a number of blunders like that with them. I do wonder if it is because I still have the old ATT Charter Plan. I have unlimited phone everything for $99 and unlimited data for $24.99. They keep trying to make me switch, but I am like NO WAY. Stuff like this keeps happening to me. I do wonder if they do on purpose.
ok, so I got a T-Mobile Wing. I live in Canada and I use my Rogers sim card on it. I don't have a data plan with my 'my5' plan. I was looking for Rogers GPRS settings on line and I went to this site: http://www.howardforums.com/archive/topic/376820-1.html
I entered 'Rogers internet.com settings' it says 'requires access to a Data access plan'. As I said, I'm not on a data plan, anyways after entering these settings:
apn: internet.com
username: wapuser1
password: wap
ip: 208.200.067.150
I was able to go on the net. Now, does anyone know If I will be charged for this? If so, is there a way I can goto a Rogers store or online and see how much data I've used and how much it will cost me? Or do I do nothing and wait for my next bill to see if they're gonna start to charge me?
Thanks!
as far as i know, yes, you are being charged for this.
i base that answer on this knowledge:
personally i have not bought an internet plan, and when i went to browse the internet (i thought i was on wi-fi only), there was a notification that my phone was connecting to GPRS. i of course cancelled that and then went in and deleted the Cingular internet settings that were on my phone to ensure that i wouldn't accidentally connect again, but when my phone bill came i was charged for a minute of internet usage.

If you want to make sure they don't charge you, call Rogers to ask them to block any data via GPRS. In about 2 hours of phone calls it should be done and any charge on your bill for data is their fault. A data plan with Rogers is a bad idea so you should cut this service right now.
Hi All,
Justy recieved my unlocked Atrix 4G, My understanding is that these guys are meant to be next G compatible.
Set it all up, all is working fine, bar the next G network, I can make and recieve calls, access the net through WiFi but no net access through the carrier.
Tried everything, any help.
Thanks in advance
did you try and set the APN?
http://ausdroid.net/apns/
im using my atrix in australia too, but im on the virgin/optus network. i can get my internet data to work.
Thanks abe1990.
I whent through all this with my previous Desire, but for the life of me, cant remember where to access the info i need from.
Just rebooted the device, notsure why i didn't try earlier, all seems to be fine now.
Thanks
Yeh was just about to add - I'm using an Atrix on Telstra no worries. Seems you were just missing the APNs
You can use the Telstra configure page to ensure you get all the APN's correct.
http://configure.telstra.com.au/telstra/index.jsp
It will download the config file to your phone - no need to manually edit.
Hey guys,
little more interesting now. I tried to send an sms, and its telling me that you need to enter a valid number. Im guessing it has something to do with country settings of some soret howver not sure?
Thanks
so i have done the updates successfully, yet still the same message, i have notices when i input the number it appears like a US number, i.e 111-111-1111. not sure if this is the issue.
Thanks for that guys. I have done the auto set up through telstra and all seems to be working. The problem now is that when sending sms i must add +61 in front of all numbers otherwise it doesn't recognise and says invalid number. Is there a setting for this, a can't seem to find anything.
Unusual, im not having a problem. Maybe try downloading MoreLocale 2 off the market, it changes all your regional settings to Australia. Add EN AU to the app. It may help..
Hey, how is your data coverage on the go with telstra, I'm on virgin here and its good if your standing under a tower (five_six mb/s) but on a train line or anywhere else it barely manages to update facebook.

I'll have to give more local a go and keep you posted. As for Data coverage with Telstra, I have now been through all the networks and I find it by far the best. Carparks, lifts, city everywhere really, a little pricer but worth it.
Hey guys I just go my Atrix today, I can't seem to get my phone to connect on the Next G network. If I do it always come up with a error everytime I turn my phone on and off, it always ask me to try and select another carrier. Plus I don't get the Telstra Newtork on the notification bar its just blank. However if I hit cancel it will let me stay on the Next G network but when I call or recieve a call for Next G numbers it crashes my phone and forces it to reboot. Just wanted to know if anyone else is having this problem or is it just me.
The only way I have worked around this is using the 3Telstra network, which kinda sucks cause I need the the Next G coverage.
Any one having issues with the mobile hotspot. At first every time i went to use it would have to change the mobile APN auth type to get it to connect.
Now after upgrading to .57 i keep getting the u need to pay at&t to use this msg. Any thoughts
Im on telstra and have had the phone 3 weeks
Got mine last week from Bell Canada, and after setting the APN's, running so sweetly on Optus HSDPA.
Mine doesn't suffer from the random muffled voice issues the AT&T phones are experiencing. The Bell Canada phone doesn't loose any APN or carrier settings on reboot.
Theoretically with the 850Mhz band support it should work on Telstra NextG, but who knows. Sounds like AT&T are severely locking down their phones. Glad I got mine from Bell (and logo free)
Hey buddy. I'm on Telstra as well. Call them on 125880 and follow the prompts until you speak to someone. They will text you an update with all the settings. I literally just did that 5 minutes ago

No doubt it depends on the area you're in, some areas will support 900Mhz only which the Atrix doesn't have.
On the south side of Brisbane, I've yet to have a situation where it drops out of H+ for data. What APN settings are you using?
dio, i bought my phone unlocked from negrielectronics so they sent me the code.
AusDroid suggested:
TPG Mobile – Internet

APN: internet

That didn't work for me so all i did was create one, give it a name and save it. So my APN only has the default settings, i.e MCC: 505, MNC: 02.
I do drop from H quite often in Sydney city, I then have to wait until it finds H again. Maybe there is someway so it doesn't attempt to connect to 3g?
thks... will check out the site. btw is it a at&t branded phone?

If you're on Net10 with an AT&T sim card they say upfront that they throttle you at 1.5gb of data in any given month. I have yet to be throttled, but i'll probably hit 1.5gb this month with about a week left so we'll see what throttling is all about. Not sure if they just slow down the connection or completely cut it off, but I should know soon enough!
Be careful!

I hit some arbitrary limit before they had the 1.5gb cap. I was throttled and it stayed that way for months. I got jerked around by the phone support, email support and even their Facebook page staff for hours trying to get it lifted. It finally took a call to their "executive escalation" call center to resolve. I found that number on Howard Forums. The one that worked for me was 8008765753.

The settings here from Net10 (click on "Phone Programming" and then "IF YOUR CARRIER IS AT&T") allow data, sms, and MMS:
http://net10sim.com/support.php
HOWEVER with these settings I still have intermittent data issues. For example:
Open Chrome, go to google.com = fast
Search for something = fast
Click the first result = hang, data connectivity lost (Chrome times out and says I am offline)
The settings here from xda behave the same as above:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40188181&postcount=49
To be clear: sms, mms, and data "work" with the xda settings but I still have problems with data dropping. So I'm actually using the settings from "net10Sim.com" instead because they behave the same and require less editing.
I've put in a request with Net10 support to get real, valid, official APN settings but who knows if I'll really get anything.
Seeing the same thing on straight talk...
Now straight talk and net10 are sharing the tfdata APN settings... (Some straight people have been migrated to this tfdata, some are still on att.mvno)
Its really hit or miss... and seems to get better at night..
I can do a speed test and get 6 Mb down in Tulsa ok area, then not be able to load a web page.. I can tell when its acting up because the plus sign next to the H cycles.. On At&t and Net10 (At&t simm) for me that did not used to happened until just a week or so ago. Tmobile's + sign would cycle all the time. Now when I am having difficulty with a page loading I see it cycling.. When things are going "good" (fast page loads, consistent speedtest.net tests) + sign doesn't cycle at all.
Its frustrating to say the least..

Has anyone else been seeing grey bars on the signal icon lately? My phone will shows H+ and full signal, but grey bars which means it's not connecting to google services. Have the apn settings changed recently?

I got this all the time, it means the phone can't connect to Google services... Usually also means internet is broken or to slow, when it happens to me nothing would load for several second. Switched to AT&T GoPhone and haven't had a single issue with that again.

It's only been the past month or so that it's been doing that, before that it was fine. I've seen on another thread that the apn settings have changed after the roll out of LTE or that I might need a new sim card possibly.

To be honest, mine started doing it in early August (although MMS has never worked) and I gave up after 4 hours on the phone with their tech support telling me it was an issue with my phone and not their problem. Switched to GoPhone and haven't had a single issue since.
Not sure if this is it either, but an AT&T wireless tech (I work in telecom, this is an actual tech that works on switches and tower sites), that the towers give priority to certain customers like AT&T post/pre paid accounts over MVNOs and if the equipment gets busy it will actually block "nonessential" services like data to lower grade APNs. He said they have seen traffic increases much more than expected from MVNOs in the last couple months... Take it for what's worth I guess.

Well finally got mms working for first time in 2 years. Downloaded a free app that gives you Correct apn settings. It tells you to create two separate apn's, one for mms and one for data. Worked great. It's called tweaker apn.
