Hello guys,
1. does anyone know of a way to play BBC iplayer on the diamond or
2. Can some on write an app (like the you tube app) for the bbc iplayer, some thing like the Nokia N96 will have.
i would have thought as the diamond supports Flash and Java, the iplayer should work, howerver this is not the case.
the have given us flash lite so we dont miss out on all the wonderfull banner ads around the web, but no video support
This would be great for the WM 5/6 user. as the iphone is able to play iplayer and N96 will be able.
I feel left out.
I was just wondering the same thing, an iplayer app would be awesome
The BBC are releasing a new iPlayer client for mobile devices on 1st October, primarily for the Nokia N96 which is a Symbian phone:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7603606.stm
It's possible they might release something for other device as well.
I had an idea to get iPlayer working though, haven't really looked into yet. As the iPlayer works on the iPhone, it might be possible to get it to work on the Diamond by doing the following:
- Install latest version of Opera (build 1938)
- Install Flash Lite 3.1
- Change the User Agent String in Opera to that of the iPhone
Don't ask me how to do the last part, I'm not even sure if it is possible but you could start by checking out the Opera.ini file
Good luck!
P.S. It looks like during a beta earlier this year the iPlayer was available on HTC phones, except videos didn't work. Here are screenshots of what it should like on the Diamond!
http://www.mobiletechaddicts.com/2008/07/06/bbc-iplayer-20-beta/
I've had no joy doing those two first steps but would be willing to try the third if someone could point me in the right direction.
Anyone with skyfire try it?
Well, I made a bit of progress!
I now have the iPhone version of iPlayer loading in Opera after I modified the opera.ini file and changed the user agent string as follows:
Custom User-Agent=Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102
Here is how it looks:

However, I haven't figured out how to get the videos to play. I downloaded the dvha79 build of Flash Lite 3.1 from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=423860
Without changing the user agent string, the standard iPlayer page loads and videos appear to start buffering but never play. After changing the user agent string to the iPhone, as you can see from the second picture it complains about a missing plug-in. I have done a bit of experimentation and appears it is trying to load an MP4 stream which Flash Lite should be able to handle, I have tried tweaking the opera.ini plug-ins section (even tried to get Windows Media Player to play the stream) as well as the registry classes root and played about with CLSIDs to get it to play with the Flash Lite plugin but no joy.
I'll give up for now and wait and see what happens on October 1st.

I'm working on this too - if I get anywhere that hasnt already been covered then I'll let you know - I have simular results to this but I didnt change the .ini file - I'm not convinced that makes a huge difference? I have the latest Opera installed and the latest 3.2 flash.....

Why not? By MIDlet manager I think.
yeah... I've got a few on my 8125.
Some of them have some weird little screen drawing glitches since they were made for lower resolution mobile phones and not PPC's, but they still play fine:
Frogger:
I, Robot:
Tetris:
Worms Golf
Who Wants to be a Millionaire:
just a question guys. do you find it slow when running these games? like it takes ages for the java games to load when once it does its still slow. i tried running this kart game, i cant remember the name, but that character is very popular in ps2. it runs full screen fine, but damn it lags sooo much.. i dont want to overclock as i think java games should be low resource requirement..
Nope, actually I've noticed the java to be very fast on my 8125. I came from a Razr V3 and the java on that phone is god aweful dog slow!
You may also want to read http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=644&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 for a tutorial and links on midlets.
where can i get these games for the 8125/wizard???? do i have to be a techy to get them to work??

I seriously doubt (m)any k750i-specific games will run. I've tested a LOT of non-standard (device-specific) midlets under Intent - none of them ran.
Generic Midlets are a different questions - they will run most of the time.
try motorola midlets. the tao midlet manager on the sda could launch most of them. i did not test on the wizard.

In reality the truth is a bit different: Torch Mobile company has released a beta version of their Iris for Windows Mobile that uses Webkit rendering engine - an open source project of Apple - the very same that Safari for iPhone is using. You can download it in beta version here:
http://www.torchmobile.com/download
More information about Iris:
Iris Browser™ for Windows Mobile® 5 & 6 is now available for free download! Simply register with us by providing your name and contact information and download the CAB to your PC or directly to your phone. Then follow along as Torch Mobile makes regular improvements to the browser, adding new features, making it faster, and generally improving the user experience.
Please remember that this is early preview software
Our impressions: it is rendering web pages exactly the same as Safari for iPhone but is slower, what may change after final version will be relesaed.
Only WM6?
(forget my post!)
i like it works great on my sprint mogul, now i can use this in addition to skyfire thanks for the notice
Any further Notes? I Just hardresetted and reinstalled my Vario. Don't want a buggy app to destroy this harmony
Actually i'm using the Opera Beta... Does it use the "double tap to overview" mode like opera does? This feature i'm missing the most in other apps.
Better? Worse?
Video
Found a user-video:
http://home.datacomm.ch/mandm/iris browser review.wmv
Has Potential
Found it very sluggish on my Kaiser. Some very obvious things missing:
1. No direct input for a URL. Why go via their start page (money?)
2. No automatic page overview (a la Opera Mini/Safari) when you first go to a website.
I will keep an eye on it as I think it could develop into a very good browser. Let's face it, Internet Explorer is hardly competition these days!
Aw... just tried it now
Feels very similar to opera, with some more (nice?) effects... doubletap is also enabled....
Plus: Easy to use, you can activate a virtual mouse cursor and scroll via D-Pad, built in traffic counter
Minus: but in the whole it feels a little slower and takes more RAM. Scrolling isn't that smooth.
Just my opinion after 5 minutes testing.
People! People! Those misleading headlines from msmobiles.com don't have to follow us to XDA-Developers! Safari?! I expect to see something smarter in the development forum. Just say a WebKit-based browser or something of that sort.
I'm sorry, but I was annoyed by the repeated inappropriate titles by msmobiles and now they're here.
yep the title is wrong... should be corrected...
i knew this browser already and i have to say it didn´t become better yet... it´s still so slow and buggy... i will wait until it´s really final
Works fine even on WM6 standard, just tried it in my HTC Vox, however it's slow... Maybe it runs better on 400 Mhz & faster devices?
The visual history is cool though, reminds me of the browser that was in my Nokia N73, it looked better in N73 though.
Also the mouse cursor is very handy.
An annoying thing is that it uses the same cache as IE, the browser installs fine on the storage card but it very quickly eats up a lot of the phone storage while browsing...
There should be an option to turn off all the transition effects, it's nice eye candy but I guess disabling it could improve performance a bit.
This is one slow browser! Slower than PIE. Has alot of catching up to be like safari or Opera Mobile.
sorry but i still can't find a browser which stands up to NetFront 3.5 considering the speed, the comfortness and the fact that it supports loads of languages.

Can netfront download anything?
I second NetFront 3.5, it's been a topnotch browser for me, and I've tried em all. Opera is good but web pages doesn't look as good as in NetFront. The ONLY thing I wish NetFront had, and correct me if I just missed something, is the initial Overview when entering a page, like OperaMini for instance. So you'd see the whole page instead of Zoom as default.

Yes, you can download files and it's actually very comfortable. you click on a zip file for instance and it just asks you where to save it.. main memory or storage card and in which dir.

There are many viewing and zooming options in this browser.. i didn't check if you can get a full page view as default... but you CAN get a fullpage view by double clicking the screen so you can choose which part of the screen you want to zoom in on.
wonderful app in my eyes.
this is it, by the way:

enjoy.
I'm in the NetFront 3.5 camp as well. Nothing I have tried has been as nice to use as NetFront. I've tried all of the new iterations of Opera, and none of them are as fast and intuitive as NF.
I'm even using it now to make this reply.
The momenum scrolling is great, and the only real issue I have with it is the ''out of memory'' errors that I get when loading large graphics-heavy pages.
Thanks for the download link for NF. I'll try it out later.
TSK TSK.. I was browsing the forum till i got to see this headline.
IMMEDIATELY I thought to myself wow sounds JUST LIKE something out of msmobiles...
Well, im not surprised to find out this actually did come from them.
We don't need this sensationalist CRAP. I avoid msmobiles at ALL COSTS, Their stories are SO unprofessionally written they are LAUGHABLE. Seriously, its SO BAD it makes my eyes hurt.
Im serious. Go to their website all you will see is "ZOMG MICROSOFTZ IZ NEGLECTING WINDOWZ MOBILE SILVERLIGHT TILT SENSORZZZZZ ZOMG SYMBIAN IPHONE"
My God, mods please lock this thread. =(
wow. angrier fella than i am... that's rare.
Netfront guys; How do I get it to be seen a full fledged browser and not a mobile browser? Sites constantly force their mobile versions on (Google, iGoogle, CNN, etc.) when I really want to see their full versions. I didn't see a setting to alter how the browser is seen by web sites it visits. Thanks.

lol, it actually looks promising. I have Opera on my Diamond and it crashes a lot especially when rotating. And it causes Manila to crash too when you close Opera.
So maybe this can be a good thing.
MAYBE being the keyword there.

Does this mean that PIE will finally be able to play Flash content (i.e. Youtube)? If I can use this to get rid of Skyfire, I will be a happy man!
I'll wait and see. Microsoft promised alot over the years, but didn't actually deliver most of the time.
Hope they prove me wrong though. Until then, i'll keep my Opera 9.
Any chance of riping this out of the emulator and making a cab for all us? It's something that is beyond my skill or I would give it a shot.

finally flash on PIE
seems to be very nice so far. that is on my CDMA diamond.
Did I miss something? How is this different from the PIE6 that's in the DFT rom I've been using since Septemeber?
What gets me is that the WM team are saying it won't be available as a download or upgrade because "the rich media experiences that IE Mobile 6 enables require more powerful, advanced devices".
Excuse me? Why then can others like OPera offer the same (or even better) on existing AND older devices?
It's a joke!
because they have so bad programmers who can´t manage that on slower cpus
Its like xp and vista, if you want vista to run you need to double or quadruble your RAM only because of some glassy windows. They are so incompetent. it is lousy programming: if its to slow, buy another faster cpu !
Is there a cab available for download yet then?

I guess bluemetal has a point in here although that is not the whole story. You see, the only way for these clowns to make money on mobile software is by selling it to device manufacturers, so if they are going to continue making software for mobile devices they have to make absolutely certain that the public thinks that there will be no chance in hell of getting "prettier" software on their older devices. By doing so, they push the sale of newer devices, and indirectly their new OS' to the public. To make things even more convincing, they release these ridiculous statements about how the devices are not powerful enough to handle it. I mean, why do you think that they have not offered upgrades to older phones (WM2003 to WM5 or WM5 to WM6)? It certainly is possible to do that (says a guy who has had a Blue Angel since early 2005 running an OS version that most new phones still don't have). Bluemetal's statement needs a small correction, it isn't that their programmers are bad (at least not all of them), but the code is written like that on purpose. Can the code be cleaned up for it to run better, faster, and in older devices? Hell Yes!!! Do they want to? F&^k No!!!!! (it is bad for business...
I can't seem to get the emulator to connect to the Internet. I've gone into File->Configure and selected my network card on the Networks tab, and the emulator appears to connect fine (icon in taskbar shows a connection, and then prompts me to choose "connects to Work or The Internet," as expected). But when I go into IE6, I can't get any pages to load. Just a "no DNS found" error each time. Is there some other setting I need to tweak somewhere?

New in Opera Mini 4.2 beta
Skins
Personalize Opera Mini by choosing a new colorful skin. We have reintroduced the popular skinning feature from Opera Mini 3.
Performance
Opera Mini 4.2 can use our newly established server park in the US. This means significantly faster page downloads for our users in the Americas and Asia-Pacific region. Users in the rest of the world will also experience faster page downloads since we’ve reduced the load on our other servers.
Video
We are working to make video content available on more phones through Opera Mini. If you have a new Sony Ericsson or Nokia phone, the chance is high that you can take Opera Mini for a spin on m.youtube.com.
Sync your Notes
The handy Notes functionality from the Opera Desktop Web browser just got more portable through Opera Link. All of your notes are available in Opera Mini directly from the Bookmarks menu.

edit your selector.utf file and change the domain for the mini 4.2 suite to be tckmax. add 3 spaces after the word tckmax to keep the file the same length.
4.2 is a yawner for me. mobile youtube support. big whoop. skins? yawn.
notes? your kidding right. speed up? I'm sure that if they have us based servers now, your old version 4.1 is using them.
Alright!!
Let's give it a try ~~~~
4.2 definitely feels much faster to me. i only use wifi for browsing, but it's definitely loading pages much faster than before. glad they finally have a us server too. 4.1 still went through the NO servers (at least on my phone it did), and it was extremely annoying when sites that automatically set your location thought i was in norway.
to get the signed version, just click on the link (on your phone) to select a different version. all the signed ones are right there.
Thanks! Installed & works for me using Esmertec JavaVM...using black skin; very fast.

It is faster for me and I love the skins.
I prefer green skin right now.

All in all it's just a new interface and copy and paste functionality...
I'm a bit disappointed..
I can see Sh*t on my Xperia 800*480 3' display... Everything is so tiny that is unusable...
They should put some setting to make zoomed interface for bigger resolution (like Xperia)
Also old problem using large font size is causing overlapping of letters... and all looks mixed up .. . is not solved...
So almost nothing has been changed of all problem that I had on my Xperia... and all WVGA resolution Mobile phones...
One more thing: Automatic changing (when opening keyboard) from portrait to landscape does not work
Opera Mini 5 beta is now available
This is the day you've all been waiting for! Opera Mini 5 beta is hereby ready for download.
As you know, we've been working on this version for quite a while. When you see the end result, we're sure you'll think the waiting was worthwhile. To download, go to http://m.opera.com/next, but please note that phone support varies from previous versions of Opera Mini.
Some key features:
* New, sleek design
* Tabbed browsing
* Password manager
* Inline text editing
* Copy-and-paste function
* We have made a special, native version for BlackBerry which includes opening links and copy-and-paste functions
Known issues:
* No Android version yet, but we're working on it
* All Palm devices will have to stick with 4.2, as they aren't capable of running 5
* Downloads, feeds and Opera Link are all disabled in the Beta while we polish the implementation
* Devices with little memory may have problems, in general, and some may not be able to run Opera Mini 5 at all.
* Devices with small resolution (less than QVGA, 240 в 320) are not recommended to try the beta
For more info, please read the press release
As always, we welcome your feedback in our forum, and please report any bugs in our bug report wizard. Thanks!
Enjoy Opera Mini 5 beta!
Best regards,
The Opera Mini team

And still no version of Opera Mobile 9.7 beta. And 9.7 has the turbo mode already. I hope that they will release the final 9.7 version soon.

Some users have reported that new OM5 beta is battery eater.. it consumes up to 3 times more resources than old OM4.2...
I think that I'm going to stick to good old OM4.2 until they resolve this big energy consumption problem...

Well, basically it can do much more than 4.2, like tabbed browsing.
Rendering is perfect. And it's REALLY fast.
It has bugs of course but another miracle has been done.
I find Opera mini 5 extremely fast at loading pages, easily the quickest mobile browser ive used.

Uuuh, that would not be nice. I really do love the new 5 beta. Before I couldn't believe that there would be a big improvement possible but it really is. Great browser!
I really like this new browser, and I havent got to use all its features yet.
Some problems with drop down menus on a web page, but maybe this could also be an issue with the website coding itself, ie not browser friendly.
Anyone know why when installed on my phone it has the java logo instead of the Opera one?

Use Mauro Venturini shortcut creator for changing the icon. You can copy icon from Opera mobile.
Actually for me this beta works nice. I would not use it, since it does not have opera link yet, so I can't use all my bookmarks .. and if some page was rendered bad in old opera mini, it is the same here, as it is more problem of Opera proxy servers (it is same with Opera mobile turbo mode).
Anyway all I can say is I like it.

If I follow the online instructions, my X1a then opens a Java app and indicates that it is installing a "midlet". After 30 sec it shows an error(?)
If I go to the Opera website via my desktop's browser to see if I can download an installer, I see a 'JAD' and 'JAR' download, but I don't know which is appropriate(?)
Please advise ...
TIA
