FTP to chipped xbox - Networking

I have a chipped xbox which has a huge hard-drive with lots of movies and tv episodes stored on it. This xbox is connected to my wireless router, and I can browse its hard-drive using on my pc using windows file explorer by connecting with ftp://xbox:[email protected] (don't try clicking on this, I can't stop the forum automatically putting it as a clickable url)
As you can see the xbox needs username of xbox, password of xbox, and the ip address assigned by the router is 192.168.123.125
I have Resco Explorer, and I belive that I should be able to connect to the xbox, but cant seem to. Could someone please give me some pointers.

Okay..
I've actually ftp'd some NES/N64 roms from my phone to xbox using PEFTPPlus and Porta+ FTP client.
Its basically just like using the PC, except inorder to get to the xbox's IP yo would need to be on your wireless LAN. Either that or set your xbox up as the DBZ or DMZ.. (cant remember the acronym..) basically so that it can be accessed by the actual IP your ISP gave you..
My xbox's ip is 192.168.0.65
user xbox and pass xbox.. put that into the program while on wifi and you should be good..

Thanks for this. I will try with this software and post my results

Streaming over internet.

Is it possible to access my files / shares over the internet ? Whats the best program to use ? Are there any programs like RealVNC that offer file access options as well as remote control options ? If preferable something with a password that I can save on my wizard so I dont have to keep typing it in all the time.
I have wifi at work so want to be able to access my files that are at home while I am in work like my mp3's. Would they stream ok ?
I think you can stream your mp3s to your wizard if you run slimserver from slimdevices on your home pc and a client on your wizard (though I haven't tried it myself) - take a look at the forums on their website.
Chris
Actually is it streaming ? I just want access to my files, is that one in the same thing ?
Sorry, this is an app which (in effect) enables you to stream (ie play) a music file on your home pc (running slimserver) and listen to it remotely on a client device (e.g. your pda). It doesn't allow you to pick up the music file itself over the internet.
Chris
I can access the shares on my home PC over WiFI using Total Commander but I cant seem to play music directly. I have to copy it across first. It gives a funny error message in WMP if I try to stream it. I will post the error message later.

You would need a Static IP address on your Home broadband connection to do this, not many home broadband packages give you a static IP just a dynamic address that changes at whim.
Presuming you have a static IP you could then get yourself a DAMN good firewall and install Microsoft IIS on your PC to make it a webserver, then get yourself a domain name and point it at your PC. (slightly simplified example above there, but I'm sure you get the drift)
There are probably apps around to do this much sipler but you'd need to google for them. pretty sure that there is a specific version of VNC and PC anywhere that will do what you want

Well I could always just take a note of my pc ip address and as my pc is on a lot of the time it can remain the same for some time. Yeah I thought VNC could do something like that but there doesnt seem to be any option for it.
Static IP, pah!
www.dyndns.org (or many others) give your dynamic IP a static DNS name eg yourname.dyndns.org and then all you need to do is:
1) Manually update your IP
OR
2) Configure your router to update you IP (available on some routers)
OR
3) Get some software to update your IP (lots available, use google)
Now your home network has a static name to access it for any purpose - just change the port on the end
I have web on 80, ftp on 21 and a socks proxy all running - just need to forward the ports on the router
You need ORB!
I use it and can acces all my photo's, MP3's and even movies that are on my home-pc streaming over internet. It works even with GPRS, but with WIFI it works really great.

Isnt there some way of doing it with resco and your ip address ? maybe opening a really obscure port on the router and firewall ? Not sure how those companies work but im a little concerned about my data going through their servers which I presume it is ?
Would just be so much simpler if there was some way of doing it with resco like I do on my home wifi.

SSH Tunnel Client?

i've searched without luck. can anyone suggest a good SSH tunnel client for WM5/6? i want to tunnel from my tytn via cingular 3g to my home pc and then use PIE to access my home media. i do this from work now, but would like to do it from my phone.
btw, i tried zatunnel, which works, but it isn't very stable.
thanks.
mToken
The new version of mToken (4.3 if i am right) has SSH tunneling (SSH port forwarding). You find it at choung networks.
http://choung.net/mToken/?page=download
perfect! works like a charm. thanks.
I probably don't understand the question, but I use Orb installed on my home computer to access files, webcam and other media from any other computer. I can listen to mp3's on my phone from anywhere with PIE. It is free.
not that familiar with Orb, but with Tversity (which i use as a media server for all of my pictures/music/video files) there is no way (as far as i know) to prevent someone on the net from port scanning your pc and copying all of your media content from your pc. with tversity, as soon as you open the port on your home router, you media content is available to anyone that is smart enough to find the right port. there is no inherent login/security mechanism in Tversity.
to prevent this,
1- i don't open the standard tversity port (standard implied deny) on my home router.
2- i open a port for ssh on my home router / fwd to my pc's ip.
3- i use an ssh server to enable a login capability on my home pc using that same ssh port.
then from my phone (for example) i can use an ssh client to login to my pc and point PIE to the ssh port / loopback ip.
like i said, works great.
now if someone can tell me how to harden Tversity w/o having to do this, i'd appreciate it!
thanks.
With ORB you create a password to log on to your system. I think it 's a good app, I first found it reccomended here.
i guess we are getting a little OT from this forum... but your right, Orb has more security. I searched for awhile, but can't determine if Orb supports upnp clients like dlink dsm-320 and xbox media center (XBMC), etc.
in addition to using pie on my wm6 and any remote PC to access my media, I have the dlink connected to my bedroom TV wirelessly and the xbox connected to my 60". from either one, i can stream all of my media content from tversity to my TV's. please let me know if Orb can do that cuz i'll switch asap. thx.
I just thought I'd add that you can use openvpn (open source) on your ppc to vpn over a single port just like ssh. Openvpn has alot more features including persistent connections for automatically reconnecting and is extremely secure. It seems very stable to me using it over wifi to connect home. It will even work over a proxy. I use it to enable direct streaming with orb because with the vpn you are essentially on the same network.
putty mobile
i've just checked my putty mobile installation and there is a tunnel-option.
i can't try it cause i'm not in my home network but you can give it a try
One little nugget I found out last night about mToken is that it doesn't work on WM6
A freind has got a cute little Vox (I think) with WM6 and can't use most the software I use This is a major reason NOT to upgrade for me if my software doesn't work
pocket putty works great with the tunnel option. I've looked tv stream over such a tunnel.

Orb speed on HD

For those that use Orb to stream media to their phones, what is the maximum.speed you have been able to stream? Using the speed test, I get 450kb/s...is this due to my internet connection or the phone?
If you do not use orb...what other program do you use to connect to your pc?
I have a dynamic ip address, and have yet to find a way to connect via remote desktop...I have gotten answers, but they're like "just use this" with little to no explanation on how to go about connecting...

Hey!
I use Orb very often and usually just set it to the standard 380 or whatever the highest speed is that can be selected on the webinterface. Never really bothered trying a faster setting because the increase in quality wasn't really noticable!
Referring to the dynamic issue problem you have: How is your internet connection managed? Do you use a router? And if yes, which one? The one I use supports DynDNS (www.dyndns.org): On the website, you create an account and a host domain (in the shape of: whatevernameyouwant.serveftp.net). Whenever you open that domain, DynDNS will forward you to your current IP if you configure your router to update the current IP at DynDNS whenever the IP changes! Works great! This way I can access my PC to do some remote desktoping whenever I'm not home by connecting to my domain!
You can take this whole thing one step further: Since you can only connect to your PC when it's awake, you usually have to leave the PC on, which kinda sucks. But there is a solution to this: You can let the PC go to sleep after a few minutes of not being used and wake it up again remotely by sending a WOL magic packet: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/WOL (Don't worry, it sounds complicated at first, but it's not that difficult... What happens is this: You configure your network card to wake the PC whenever a certain kind of data package arrives. Now, when I'm not at home, I just send that WOL package to my DynDNS-Domain, which forwards it to the current IP of my router, which in turn sends it to my network card and voila: My PC wakes up and is usable!)
EDIT: Don't hesitate to ask me any questions you might be having! And you definitely will have to be patient! Since there are so many elements involved, it takes quite alot of trial and error until you get it working!
I tried to use orb but i couldn't get it work.
I use internet explorer on my hd, and when clicking on the video to watch windows media player opens and got an error saying the video cannot open or something like that.
Orb works using a PC, so I assume it is good configured.
What is the way to see a video using orb in my HD?
thanks

I use Opera Mini. When I click on a file, I'm asked if I want to save or open the file. I save it and open it using CorePlayer!
Maybe that's the issue: Are you using WMP? Maybe the windows media player doesn't support the streamed format! You could try changing the format in the settings of the Orb web interface!

What are you trying to enable port forwarding for? For Orb? I don't think, you have to do anything for Orb to work!
EDIT: It seems I'm wrong, you might have to open a few ports... Check these articles: http://support.orb.com/kb/entry/118/ and http://support.orb.com/kb/entry/121/

Ah! Good to know that you're trying something completely different... That makes helping you alot easier!
To be able to use your PC with dynamic IP from outside you have to use DynDNS as mentioned above! Go here (http://www.dyndns.com/) and create an account. Then, create a domain (for example: telegraph0000.serveftp.net). Then, make sure DynDNS gets updated, whenever your IP changes. There are different ways to implement this: If your router supports it, you can have your router do the updating for you. If it doesn't, you can download little apps that take care of that (DynDNS offers its own client: http://www.dyndns.com/support/clients/).
When DynDNS works, you can just enter your domain into the "computer" field of Remote Desktop!
To be able to use Remote Desktop, you have to forward the TCP port 3389 in your firewall.
Try this one..you can download the programm, and it does the job for you...works great here.

[Q] How do you connect to splashtop from the internet?

The IP number the streamer shows is just the local IP, meaning I can only connect from the local network???
If you want to access the streamer from outside your network and the streamer is on a local-only IP address then you'll need to set up a port forwarding rule (and possibly a corresponding firewall rule) on whatever device does the routing on your network (usually the ADSL Modem or Cable Router on a home network).
If you have a static IP for your ISP you can create a port forwarding rule in your router so that say the port that splashtop is running on is 6783, then you will forward all TCP/UDP traffic from port 6783 to the internal IP that is displayed in splashtop. Then in the splashtop app you set it up so that it connects to your home's ip address (you can find this by going to whatismyip) and port 6783.
So for example: the ip address for my home (from whatismyip) is 01.230.29.29, and splashtop is showing me 192.168.0.199, as well as port 6783 (you can see this under network in the desktop app), i will go in to my router, port forwarding, and then create a rule where any traffic to and from local/remote port 6783 will go to the computer at 192.168.0.199.
This is really easy and permanent if your router supports mac address reservation so that your computer will always have the same internal network IP. It is also easier if you have a static IP, however if you don't have a static IP you can use something like DynDNS's dynamic IP service to have an ip that will always connect to your home regardless of what the ip changes to.
Great video here, got it running the 1st try following this video.

[Q] Need help to access network drive with ES Explorer

I have an external HD connected to my home wireless router. The router is a Netgear N600 model: WNDR3400. I can see the HD from all my computers. After some research I installed ES File Explorer on my Nexus 7 trying to get access to the Network Drive. My problem is that after doing a LAN Scan with ES Explorer I can see the IP Address for my router (default 192.168.1.1) but when I click it to get access ES Explorer is asking me for a User Name and Password. I assumed that it should be the router's User and password so I type them in but I receive a Login Failure again that says "Try new user name/password?" I ckick OK and enter the router info again but I can't access the drive.
I can access my laptop from the Nexus 7 using ES Explorer but not the Network Drive connected to the Router.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Well, there's potentially a bunch of different SMB authentication schemes that are possible; but what auth method does the router docs say it supports? I would think that you would have set this up when you configured the router initially.
I sort of doubt that it is set up to work with a domain controller, so some things to try are:
- use the workgroup name (same one the laptop uses) in the domain field in the ES add server dialog
- use the laptop user/pw pair?
- leave the user/pw pair blank and select the "anonymous" toggle?
Also, from the laptop, get the IP address of the router and run (from the command line)
nbtstat -A IP_address_of_router
at a minimum that should provide workgroup info

Thank you bftb0 for your response,
regarding your 3 points:
1. I'm not completely sure how or where to find the name of my workgroup. If you can send me some more detailed steps on where to find this information, that would be grate. My laptop is running Windows 7
2. Doesn't make any sense to me. I'm trying to connect my nexus 7 to a network drive that is connected to my wireless router not to my laptop. I had no problem connecting the Nexus 7 to my laptop with ES Explorer
3.I did this one but didn't worked.
Regarding your last command I run it on my laptop and I get a table but unfortunately I'm not sure if I can understand correctly the information on that table.
I don't know if this will help but I installed a similar app (filebrowser) on an ipad and I can access the network drive with no problem using the same username/pw combination that I'm using on my Nexus 7. So I believe that the router and the network drive is configured correctly.
can you view your HD from your laptop? if so, what is the un/pw combo you used there?
Well that table is "the remote machine's name table". In this case, remote machine = your router.
Kinda was hoping you were going to cut-n-paste the table. Unlikely it contains anything private.
By default (if you don't alter it) Windows PCs that are not part of a domain have a default workgroup name of "WORKGROUP". So I suppose if I was going to ship a router to a Windows customer (90% of the world?) that might also be the default SMB workgroup name for the router too.
On the PC, the workgroup is listed by right-clicking on My Computer -> Properties.
As I said, there are a number of different ways that authentication can occur with Windows (SMB) server shares. For home products though, I would expect the simplest of them in which case a workgroup name might not even be needed.
It is possible that ES File Manager is simply incompatible. But you might want to crack open the user manual for your router and see what knobs are available for you to turn.
good luck
haha123,
Yes I can see my HD from any of my computers and also from an ipad running an app called filebrowser.
I already used the User/PW combination that I use for all my compters and the ipad because that's the combination for the router that has the HD connected. The only devices that are not working are my Nexus 7 tablet and my Galaxy S3 phone. So I think the problem could be compatibility between Android and the router login.
How can I know if the router has a Samba Server running? If this question make any sense because I'm not too literate in this network world.
bftb0
After I wrote you, I fond out that the workgroup on my devices as you told me is "WORKGROUP" I try with that but didn't work. The table also show "READYSHARE" as one of the names so I try it also but with the same result.
Thanks to both anyhow
I'm still trying to find out what is happening.

I've found that X-Plore works much better than ES. Username and password should be the same as what you enter to get into the configuration settings of the router. You've all over-complicated things asking for workgroup info and such. The source of the media, the hard drive, isn't plugged into a computer, therefore worrying about workgroup/domain info is irrelevant. If the username and passwords are not working, then I would suggest trying a different app or looking into the configuration settings in place on the router that may be rejecting the Nexus from authenticating.
I can tell you that I have the same setup (different router though) and have my router set to allow all connections so as long as I'm on the wifi AP, any device including my tablets and phones can access the hard drive.
From a quick Google (youtube has netgear videos) I guess you are using Ready Share. Unless you have changed some defaults then displaying the properties of your external HDD in W7 File explorer should show its address as \\readyshare and that should be used in your Android File manager "set up a network connection" screen to connect to the drive.
There may also be an Android specific error in the software late last year. The last post here http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=72917&page=2 claims a solution with ES File Explorer

If the same username/password combo working on other devices isn't working on Nexus 7, then it might be a protocol error (eg: it's not a LAN share, so it's not working in ES)
Same here.
