I have an external HD connected to my home wireless router. The router is a Netgear N600 model: WNDR3400. I can see the HD from all my computers. After some research I installed ES File Explorer on my Nexus 7 trying to get access to the Network Drive. My problem is that after doing a LAN Scan with ES Explorer I can see the IP Address for my router (default 192.168.1.1) but when I click it to get access ES Explorer is asking me for a User Name and Password. I assumed that it should be the router's User and password so I type them in but I receive a Login Failure again that says "Try new user name/password?" I ckick OK and enter the router info again but I can't access the drive.
I can access my laptop from the Nexus 7 using ES Explorer but not the Network Drive connected to the Router.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Well, there's potentially a bunch of different SMB authentication schemes that are possible; but what auth method does the router docs say it supports? I would think that you would have set this up when you configured the router initially.
I sort of doubt that it is set up to work with a domain controller, so some things to try are:
- use the workgroup name (same one the laptop uses) in the domain field in the ES add server dialog
- use the laptop user/pw pair?
- leave the user/pw pair blank and select the "anonymous" toggle?
Also, from the laptop, get the IP address of the router and run (from the command line)
nbtstat -A IP_address_of_router
at a minimum that should provide workgroup info

regarding your 3 points:
1. I'm not completely sure how or where to find the name of my workgroup. If you can send me some more detailed steps on where to find this information, that would be grate. My laptop is running Windows 7
2. Doesn't make any sense to me. I'm trying to connect my nexus 7 to a network drive that is connected to my wireless router not to my laptop. I had no problem connecting the Nexus 7 to my laptop with ES Explorer
3.I did this one but didn't worked.
Regarding your last command I run it on my laptop and I get a table but unfortunately I'm not sure if I can understand correctly the information on that table.
I don't know if this will help but I installed a similar app (filebrowser) on an ipad and I can access the network drive with no problem using the same username/pw combination that I'm using on my Nexus 7. So I believe that the router and the network drive is configured correctly.

Well that table is "the remote machine's name table". In this case, remote machine = your router.
Kinda was hoping you were going to cut-n-paste the table. Unlikely it contains anything private.
By default (if you don't alter it) Windows PCs that are not part of a domain have a default workgroup name of "WORKGROUP". So I suppose if I was going to ship a router to a Windows customer (90% of the world?) that might also be the default SMB workgroup name for the router too.
On the PC, the workgroup is listed by right-clicking on My Computer -> Properties.
As I said, there are a number of different ways that authentication can occur with Windows (SMB) server shares. For home products though, I would expect the simplest of them in which case a workgroup name might not even be needed.
It is possible that ES File Manager is simply incompatible. But you might want to crack open the user manual for your router and see what knobs are available for you to turn.

I've found that X-Plore works much better than ES. Username and password should be the same as what you enter to get into the configuration settings of the router. You've all over-complicated things asking for workgroup info and such. The source of the media, the hard drive, isn't plugged into a computer, therefore worrying about workgroup/domain info is irrelevant. If the username and passwords are not working, then I would suggest trying a different app or looking into the configuration settings in place on the router that may be rejecting the Nexus from authenticating.
I can tell you that I have the same setup (different router though) and have my router set to allow all connections so as long as I'm on the wifi AP, any device including my tablets and phones can access the hard drive.
From a quick Google (youtube has netgear videos) I guess you are using Ready Share. Unless you have changed some defaults then displaying the properties of your external HDD in W7 File explorer should show its address as \\readyshare and that should be used in your Android File manager "set up a network connection" screen to connect to the drive.
There may also be an Android specific error in the software late last year. The last post here http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=72917&page=2 claims a solution with ES File Explorer

If the same username/password combo working on other devices isn't working on Nexus 7, then it might be a protocol error (eg: it's not a LAN share, so it's not working in ES)

I can't see my Shared folders, all Local Network PCs can access my shared multimedia files but ES File Explorer can't detect any after several Scans.

All good advice but this may not work if your office PC is behind a firewall / your office network uses Network Address Translation or you need a VPN to access the network. Give it a go and see what happens but if the IP address of your office PC starts 10.0.0 or 192.168 or similar, it is unlikely to work. You will then have to use a remote access service.

Also if your IP's range anywhere within 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255, the you're behind a firewall.

If you're just using 3G/HSDPA you shouldn't have any problems connecting.
If you've got a DSL connection with a dynamic IP address (like mine with Virgin Media) Just register and download the NO-IP software (www.no-ip.com - it's free) then instead of typing in your Ip address on RD you'll put "....no-ip.biz" - or whatever they assign you.
As already stated you HAVE to open up port 3389 on your router and assign it to the relevant pc. This number you will find by entering "ipconfig" in the cmd window. Be aware that if your router gets turned off you could find that the IP address of your computer changes, so you'll have to go back into your router settings and change it to the new ip address for that pc.
I've tested RDP on XP Pro, Media Center 2005 and Vista. I found it to be a little better when the host was a Vista pc - whether this is my imagination or because it is designed with Vista in mind I don't know.

Of course, this only applies if you are not behind a corporate firewall using NAT or other dynamic IP behind the firewall. Also, if it is a corporate network, opening port 3389 may be (a) very difficult to convince your IT dept to do and (b) not very secure!
If one iof the dynamic dns systems works for you, you might try dyndns.org

I did exactly everything in this guide and even set a corresponding exception in the Windows firewall (also tried with Windows firewall off) - but the mobile remote desktop program always tells me there was an internal error... But what the heck could that be?
Dont bother the remote dt program is ****e, im currently using vnc which is a bit better, but rather lacking also.
Is it me or did that video not mention setting up your windows machine to allow connections.
Make sure remote desktop is enabled on your PC and make sure it is allowing connections from computers running any version of Remote desktop(2nd option) third option works between windows 7 machines but wouldn't allow my phone to connect.
Your error sounds like it is being caused by something on the phone end though so i dont know if that will help.
Those with remote desktop working can you get it to go landscape? Mine works fine except i can't get landscape mode. Also anyone know of a app that can send wake up requests to a machine? I have this on my laptop so i can wake my pc over the internet and then log in. Anything similar out there for win mobile?
allowing a connection through windows firewall alone is not helping, if you have other system securtiy programs that also has a firewall. or maybe your router has a firewall too. you should try and forward the right port (3389) in the software of your router.
I opened port 3389 on the router, I activated the correct remote desktop option on the PC (Vista), the IP is right (wrong IP adress throws a different error, so the program gets that far)...

Have you tried using 16 bit high colour option? Mine said it couldn't connect when i turned it down to 256 colours.

Your user name and password for windows.
You MUST have a password set up on your windows account to be able to use remote desktop. If you don't have a password set up remote desktop and other network related access will not work. I.e using the phone to access shared windows folders.

my router is a THOMSON TG585v7 and to log into it i need to type http://192.168.1.254 so i did and the only thing like port forwarding i can find is the Toolbox\Game & Application Sharing menu and in their i can type the ports but cant type the local IP address as their no where to add it, ive added a pic that might help you help me
If you are accessing the machine via your wifi(i.e your own network) you should be able to do it without any port forwarding.
So punch in your machines local IP and your username and password. That should work(make sure it is using your WiFi and not still connecting via 3G). If you wanted to be able to do it via 3G/wifi(external network) then you will need to get port forwarding working.
Edit: Port forwarding guide for you. I think this is roughly the same version of router you have just different branding.

so in the last part of the setup i need to manually define it as the local ip, still not working if that's what i should do
The last step is applying the forwarding to your PC. So you should be able to pick your PCs name in the drop down box.
Have you tried just doing it over your local wireless network(forget about port forwarding for a minute.) Enter the local IP(could also just try entering the name of the PC though im not sure if that works) of your PC as the computer then your user name and password.
I set up remote desktop with mycloud/splashtop on my tf101. I can locally remote access my computer on the home network.
But I want to be able to access my computer from any network. Would the fact that when I was asked for permissions on my pc for either private networks or public networks, I checked private be the reason why i can't connect when using a network outside of my home network? If so, how do i change this permission.
Right now, when i try to connect to my computer using an outside network like my mobile data connection tethered from my phone, it says cannot reach.

You need to set the connection with your WAN IP not your local IP. On your PC go to whatsmyip.org or similar to find out what your current WAN IP address is.
If you don't have a static IP address your WAN IP will likely change at some point. You can get a free account at dyndns.com and set it up in your router (Google it). You can then connect to your PC using YOURUSERNAME.dyndns.org or whatever you setup in DynDNS.
The alternative is to use TeamViewer or LogMeIn or similar which will automatically keep track of your PC whenever it connects to the internet.
Remote access can be real pain in the butt when you are accessing over the WAN.
As mentioned in posts above you need to set up port forwarding on your router, ensure there are relevant firewall exceptions and use your external facing IP address and set up a dynamic DNS account if you don't have a static IP - some routers have built in support for dynamic DNS.
Log me in is a good free service for this but the android app is pricey (and not very good IMO) - while the interface is not ideal it does take away all of the annoying hassles.
If you do go down the dynamic DNS, port forwarding route you might find that remote desktop via 2X RDP or similar is better than splash top anyway - although you can't do remote desktop on windows vista/7 home editions.

nvm turns out i only forwarded the ports on my router firewall. after also forwarding the ports in my modem i can now access from an outside network

Just an FYI, but auto discovery doesn't work on the Android client yet, though it is coming (it is experimental in iOS).
Wyse PocketCloud does have this facility, though it doesn't stream video/games like Splashtop.

I would try TeamViewer. On your PC you can install the host version. That way you can access your PC before login. TeamViewer works without making changes in your router/firewall.
The Android TeamViewer client is free.

I finally fixed my issue with doing this last night. I was forwarding all 3 ports but I was doing TCP and UDP (which I must say I've done many times before and never had an issue) but I removed the forwarding from UDP field in my router and just left the 3 ports forwarded in TCP field. Today I can now connect and perfectly use my PC from work using Splashtop w00t!
I have an old Maxtor Shared Storage II network drive. All PC access via "map network drive" in file explorer. No issues with WinXP, Win7, and Ubuntu.
Been trying to get my Acer A500 connected. Unable. Used ES File explorer, File Manager HD, Add SMB, and lots more. I can't get my acer to see the NAS.
A500 with HC3.2, not rooted.
Most apps say failed to login. Tried anonymous not working. I created an account on the maxtor. Still login failures.
Any thoughts ? Apps that will work ?
Just a guess but try taking browser to its IP address see if it prompt for log on.
Or maybe a FTP program like cute FTP.or something similar.you could share the drive thru your desktop.

I can use the browser to access the admin page which 192.168.0.100. This uses port 80. I tried using the browser to access the public folder. Doesn't work.
When using a port scanner for 0.100, I see port 445 available. It won't allow me to login via tablet. All windows machines work fine.
So ES File Explorer is finding the drive, just failing login?
Also, are you sure it is directly finding the drive on the network by itself, or is it picking it up as a shared drive off of your PC or other computers that have it mapped?

I loaded and tried File Expert. Same results. No connections.
Ran, Overlook Fing app, scanned for services. I see port 80, 139, 445, 631, 3689, and 8080.
I can login via browser and manage the Maxtor NAS. Again the address is 192.168.0.100. I named it "maxtor_nas". I believe port 445 is SMB connection. No matter what program\app I use to connect, it fails. Says can't load directory or invalid login\password. I tried the admin and anonymous login, no success.
I'm using a Dlink DIR-655 router. I still can't see the default "public" directory on this Maxtor Shared Storage II, NAS. I've tried entering IP address, Device name, etc. I can't connect.

an update. I ran Ubuntu on one machine. I can mount the network drive. So the router and network setup, maxtor settings appear OK. Something with android connection.

Using an HTC G2 (Desire z) I'm able to connect to SMB share on Ubuntu machine just fine with File Expert. Managing files (edit/delete/copy works great but can't stream video from Samba. Of course WI-FI needs to be on.
update. Tried my kids droidx and droidx2. Both fail to connect with file expert. Tried notebooks from friends. Windows and Linux "map network drive" work fine. There's something wrong with android connecting to port 445.

Most likely you need to change the security settings for the SMB share (I don't know if your nas supports such settings). I have the same issues with a win7 share that I could access with fileexpert until a certain update on the app. Now I can get it working only with file manager hd.

Samba is poorly configured in the OEM firmware for Maxtor Shared Storage II NAS drives, which prevents Android from connecting.
To allow Android to connect, the Samba configuration file (smb.conf) must be modified so that the line "security =" becomes "security = share". Unfortunately this file is overwritten each time the drive is rebooted or setting are modified through web admin.
Here's my workaround:
Install custom firmware
- Can't post links, thanks XDA. Google: "Mod with SSH, Telnet, FTP and Optware (2008-04-24)"
Login to the drive with root permission
- Use putty.exe to SSH to the drive IP address - U:root P:root
Create a correctly configured Samba configuration file
- Change to the configuration file directory: cd /usr/lib
- Make a copy of smb.conf: cp smb.conf smb.conf.OK
- Modify smb.conf.OK: vi smb.conf.OK
- Change the line "security =" to "security = share"
- Save the file: <esc>:x
Copy our new configuration file over the default on each reboot
- Change to the init.d directory: cd /etc/init.d
- Modify rcS: vi rcS
- Add the following line above the final line "exit 0": cp /usr/lib/smb.conf.OK /usr/lib/smb.conf
- Save the file: <esc>:x
Reboot and enjoy!
This works for me, as your network and drive may be configured differently, your mileage may vary.
This may also apply to a similar problem with the Maxtor Central Axis NAS drives.

I found this too, scanning for SMB devices returns nothing (unlike on my phone which works fine), however setting up the connection to the PC manually by clicking LAN > New and typing in the computer's network name (IP not required), username and password worked perfectly. Let me know if you need clearer instructions on that.

I can connecting the LAN via my tables to the PC, but when I do the same thing with my Android TV, type in the same password and user name , it just doesn't seem to connect, any idea if there any different between the android on tables and on TV ?

EDIT: Nevermind. Thought that you were using the FTP server on the shield, not the computer.
I think there is a fundamental issue here. The Shield TV is actually hosting two networking interfaces:
- bluetooth interface used to connect to bluetooth devices (192.168.49.0/24 network)
- wired/wireless interfaces to connect to the home network for internet access
For some reason the bluetooth interface is the default interface because of which any actions of scanning, discovery, etc. lead to no result, because ES File Explorer is only looking for devices on the bluetooth interface's network.
On the other hand, manually adding the device works because the other interface is active and working.
I sent an email to EStrongs explaining this issue, but have not received any response in a week. The solution is to add a default interface selector in the ES File Explorer menu somewhere, but it has to be implemented by EStrongs.
I have a problem running an FTP on the Shield TV, ever since I stopped using wifi to connect my Shield Tv to my network. I'm not using Ethernet/homeplugs instead, and I have a problem where ES File explorer thinks that the IP address for the shield is 192.168.49.1 rather than my correct network IP Address (allocated statically) of 192.168.0.25. The shield works fine on the network, but the ES File Explorer app doesn't pick up the right IP address, and as a result appears to be unreachable when I try to connect to it over FTP (where the shield is the host)
That's strange! I remember I read the same IP with final 49.1 on mine Ethernet connection! And I still have big connectivity issues, Ethernet and 5G ! N working better, not top notch though! Did You improve yours?

this is a bit maddening. I'm wondering if there is a way of disabling the bluetooth briefly, to allow the ethernet interface to be chosen(?)
edit 12/11/15 ignoring the displayed ip (192.168.49.1), and referencing the assigned static ip appears to work...
can you explain better?Where is the static assigned ip to use for ftp connection?
Update: i've solved using another app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserver ...where i can choose the preferred connection (bt,wifi,ethernet ...)
