Weird hardware mod - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi people,
i always wanted some standard audio output on hermes hardware, to listen to some music with some good earphone.
Additionally i wanted to be able to charge the battery while listening.
Unfortunately HTC engineers decided to put the very exclusive 11pin multi connector, for all that.
I know there are a lot of commercial adaptors and stuff to make this work.
But why buy expensive stuff like that and carry it around all the time, if it is possible to fix this on your own
So some day i decided to mod the hardware and implement at least a 2.5mm standard jack for audio.
I discovered some nice place for the jack inside the housing and made it real.
Guess what, it's working fantastic!
O.K. i must admit this kind of mod is only for some enthusiasts out there.
Not to forget the alarm vibrator get's lost, because the space is needed for the audio jack.
I don't care about that, because i never used it
Here's what you need.
Hardware part:
1. A real small 2.5mm audio jack with four contacts.
2. A very small soldering iron.
3. A very nice magnifier.
4. Some piece of small isolated copper wire.
5. 2-component glue to give some stability
6. Some patience and skills.
Additonally you may need a adaptor to convert from 2.5mm to a 3.5mm plug (depends on your earphones).
Software part:
1. Y-cable_HERM1_070316.CAB (works like a charm)
You may also use equalizer.exe to blast the sound on your earphone .
Attached there some low-res pictures of the surgery.
If there's some interest, i may give some more details or high res pix .
Anyway, i know this is a real sick mod but it's fun and good sound!
Cheers,
scholbert.

well done,a more comprehensive set of instructions and high res photos is definitely the way to go.
this is a very good mod maybe with some work the vibrrator could be retained .this should be a sticky is fleshed out well

Thanks for credits, stevieboy!!
Not sure about the vibrator stuff, but nothing is impossible .
Perhaps it might be placed elsewhere (see position of vibra on trinity hardware).

Thats fantastic! I dont use my Hermes for playing music because wired headphones suck (kept falling out..) and I cant afford a pair of bluetooth ones
I wish the Hermes had come like that!

more about that..

first of all thanks for the credits so far.

Sound is excellent and i don't like all that bluetooth overhead to listen to some music.
Anyway the 2.5mm plug won't drop i promise
I know that developer's time has nearly gone for hermes and some interest is already focused on newer devices...
But i use it everday, dropped it, repaired it, used it again, flashed new roms, surfed the net, made obviously some phone calls, liked the look and feel and...
That's why i put this into the forum .
But... , back on track.
I was asked again via PM to publish the pinout of the 11-pin connector of hermes.
So here it is!
This is the hermes side (it's male)!
EDIT: Headset Detect has to be pulled low to switch audio channel to headphones!
Thanks goes out to tracy and matt, who published the female connector of some headset first!!

Additonally i put together some high resolution pic's i took during the exercise (uups quite big). Upload just failed, try again tomorrow
Enjoy the music!

thanks for this work, that's what I searched for Although this is an old thread...
Just some questions - for what exactly did you need this .CAB stated under "Software"? Maybe I just want to build an own adaptor using the pin config, will I need this Y-Cable.CAB? If so, could you please tell me where I can get it?
Many thanks,

Uuuh as you stated this is an old thread and i fiddled around with it long time ago...
As far as i remember you'll need this tweak to install necessary drivers for the headset mode. Without this package the audio channel for the headphones won't be activated. At least it may depend on the ROM you're using. Some custom ROMs already got these drivers/settings build in.
Anyway, please unzip the attachment first, then install then CAB to your device.
Good luck for project and have a nice day!

Broken Connector replaced with USB2

Hello all,
Many moons ago I dropped my xda one to many times and damaged the pins in the connector.
I have seen a few similar posts regarding this, and O2s response is to generally replace the entire motherboard.
I finally got around to it, I pulled off the broken connector and soldered on a usb connector.
With great thanks to xda-developers.com, I deduced the pin layout drew up a plan and tried to do the soldering only to find it was too small for me. I took it to an electronics engineer and he did it for me to my specs and low and behold it worked perfectly.

Good to hear! 8)
I am so happy to have my wallaby back!
I was glad we managed to secure the usb connector on the mb by the rear two lugs on the connector, it seems pretty solid. its a shame it sticks out about 5mm from the phone.
This weekend I will open it back up and take some better pics with my own camera, the above (taken with works camera) are pretty cruddy.
I think o2 had the right idea with the usb cable on the mini, 24 pins over 15mm is just too fine and delicate for something that gets thrown around so much.
Cheers!

Well done Steven, I also need to ask , does this mod also charge the phone?
I have a dislodged serial connector and looking for an easy fix, do you know if a GPS receiver will also work?
I also noticed the rear connector looks like it routes through the serial connector pins, does anyone know if this socket can be used to charge and sinc the phone.

ok thanx but can i use a headset or a bluetooth thiz way ti will make life a lil easier for me
If you have about 70 bucks, dr. cell phone will fix it. or if its still in warranty, call tmo
sigh no warranty this phone is about 1 yr old sigh....so where can i find this dr
google dr cell phone. they are slow though, just to warn you. took mine like 2 months because the part is rare
The earpiece speaker is really simple - two wires connecting to the plug - that sometimes can have a break in one of the wires. I had one recently that had the black wired severed completely because it got in the way of the screw hole. Might be worth taking apart and checking.

Tips for buying a used universal

Hello! could people please share tips and things to remember when buying a used universal? I mean what are the things that you should do to check or find tell tale signs of defect, hardware, the firmware the os, I have already done a search in the forums and already know some, but there might be things that I have missed, so help would be very nice, I will be meeting the seller so I get to inspect the device up close so it would be nice to armed with the info how to inspect the device from how to check the bootload etc.
Thanks for the help and I hope that this helps others too
The Universal can be bought cheap at german eBay. Look for MDA PRO. You should be able to purchase one for around or less than 100 Euro.
Preferably look for the following signs:
1) Unmodded. Many users got the Universal within a contract from the operator, but did not use it much, because it is too big for them. Such Universals are normally in good condition. When advertised that it ships with an OS different than WM5, you know that the owner has been flashing it. I personally don't like that, because that means it belonged to a power user and must be more worn out.
2) Warranty stickers. Make sure the hinges have the warranty stickers inside. If they are missing, the device has been opened. You don't want to purchase one that has been opened.
3) Screen. Screen should be without scratches and should have had always a screen protector.
4) Speaker. The external speaker which is used for calls can break, as it is fitted with some kind of pogo pins. Make sure it is working.
If you get to test the device first, do as this:
- do a call (bring your SIM card)
- check WLAN and Bluetooth (bring a headphone and try it somewhere with WLAN activity)
- bring a SD card and see if it is read
- check for bad pixels
- play a song
- take a picture
- try the keyboard and touch screen
- try all the buttons
If everything works, that is the best you can check it for.
Of course it could break the next day, but it shouldn't.
Cheers,
vma
Great guide vma!
I´ll just add:
Take special care on the swivel piece (The one that gives Uni it´s great and unbeatable form factor: PDA - Micro Lap top)
take care of another thing when i bouted my universal after i used it for about 1 week the phone was hangs soo much the reason was in the memory crd .....so you must try a memory crd and play a small video on it about 10 minutes
The most important thing everyone forgot to mention is USB port. When looking for a device, see if the port moves in any way or wiggles in its opening. See if the device synchronises with AS, charges etc.
The fact the device had been flashed or opened wouldn't play a huge part for me if everything else works well and the body is in sound condition, e.g. the hinge is not loose, the screen rotates and closes properly, all keys are present and work, keyboard backlight works with and without sensor etc.
Speakers don't just break, as post No2 claims (POGO PINS??), but it is good to check that phone is capable of making/receiving calls, you can hear the other party and the other party can hear you, can play music and earphone plug is in working condition/attached properly
Not reading SD or SIM card is a biggie, dim screen, lost touch sensitivity, scratched or damaged digitizer, worn out buttons - all obvious signs. You can open the back, remove the battery and SIM card and check for a small white blotting paper sticker covering the small mainboard pins under the SIM card, any change in color towards pink - do not buy.
@enigma1nz:
Shame on me, I did indeed forget the USB port!!! You should of course check both: charging and Active Sync connection. A broken USB connector is a mayor issue and hard to solder without proper equipment.
Regarding the speaker: I am speaking out of experience, as one faild on me. The speaker is like a small button and it has two contact plates. They are not pogo pins, but act like them. The speaker will be pressed by the case against two contact points on the PCB. What happens is that apparently some car-holders do too much pressure on the sides of the Universal casing, causing the speaker contacts to bend back and forth everytime the phone is placed or removed from the holder. After a few months the contact gets worse and worse until one of both plates brake off. Because they are so tiny, it is impossible to repair the speaker - believe me, I have tried. I ended up buying a new speaker cell at eBay.
Cheers,
vma

And believe me, I repair devices for a living. Thanks for the run-through, although I could give you the same. It happened to you, doesn't mean it happens often or it is a fault in design. I could give you a list of design faults in quite a few models of expensive cellphones on the market today, the mentioned speakers are not one of them.
I appreciate, the help people! any more inputs? I am happy that all the previous posts were, about how to inspect the device upfront and some other useful tips what to check other inputs will be highly appreciated
Battery can be also considered. Some are sold with good batery some with dead battery. It is not so expensive, but costs something. In general if battery shows less than 50% and devidce still works (even under load) that is a good sign.
Also as for the touch screen - the best test is to open note taker and try to paint something. The painted line must exactly follow the stylus movement if it jumps somewhere, then the touch sensitive layer is bad. I bouht such UNI on eBay (was described as perfect working order), had to replace the digitizer myself.
I do prefer buying not working UNI's on Ebay with good display. Once I bought not booting one - mtty job fixed that. Other time I bouht one where the display was still off - the flex cable popped out from connector. Etc....
Thanks for all the advice people! now, please welcome me to the HTC universal family, (well actually, I have a Dopod 900 but what the heck all are the same right?) your inputs had been essential, for me to get my new baby without any hitches I hope that nothing manifests after the one week assurance the seller gave me
Special thanks to enigma1nz for all the patience and help provided to me I asked her a lot of questions in the pm's but she answered in full detail
Now I have my own device so I will be flashing away, I hope without any problems. Again my thanks to the community hopefully there are more inputs for others who are thinking of buying their 2nd hand universal via meet ups
Excellent news! Congratulations!!! And welcome to the Uni family, of course. As you can see, we are one friendly bunch, all help and support will always be available. Have fun

[Q] My Uni's dieing..........

Hello all, I listen to a lot of music at work using my XDA EXEC not a good idea on a fork lift as the uni gets knocked around a bit! Anyway the headphone socket has broken off the circuit board so now I have no sound and can no longer make calls and I'm getting cheesed off with looking at it to see if the amber light is flashing?
I have another XDA EXEC which is like new, I bought it off Ebay some time ago hoping it was the screen and battery that was dodgy but it was blocked so as good as dead!
So what I want to do now is take what ever I need to take off the motherboard from the uni that I currently use with no headphone socket and replace it with the blocked uni so I can make calls and have sound!!
But I don't know what I need to take off or what it looks like?
The reason I want to do this, is because my uni I use has had a hard life and the motherboard is a little brittle and I'm loosing buttons!
If anyone can help me out here so I can carry on using the old girl!!
Cheers..
Have a look on my sig link, there is the service manual on hot to dismantle the Uni
Good luck!

Hello Orb, I have this PDF manual which I have used many times but what I want to know is what parts on the motherboard do I need to remove so I can get a radio signal from my spare uni as its blocked/Blacklisted. I presume its a chip of some sort? Where is it and what does it look like?? I can then make a good uni out of the two of them!
Oh! I get it, perhaps you can ask enigma1 as she is an expert on this matters

Hi, I had a quick read through the problem you have. I am not sure how the broken off earphone socket affects the main speakers or internal speaker altogether, there has to be some other underlying problem to stop the sound all at once.
Unfortunately, the only suggestion I can make involves soldering of the broken off socket/replacement of one with another socket. The entire board of the new Uni you purchased is of no use to you due to being blocked, however, I had some evidence that being blocked on one network will not necessarily mean being blocked on all, therefore you can always try it with another network's SIM. Of course you can take both apart and swap housing and LCD to make it into 1 device, the suggestion Orb3000 made is a sound one with regards to seeing the disassembly procedure, alternatively there is a HTC Universal Service Manual floating on the net that you can search for and download, it is very detailed and will lead you every step of the way.
ALTERNATIVELY, you can always try using your semi-broken Uni with bluetooth headset to make calls and listen to the music.... Even with mono bluetooth headset and Pocket Player you can do anything you want, from calls to MP3s and Voice Command - Pocket Player has an option of sending your music over the bluetooth.
My uni seems to have the sound back so hopefully it will stay on!
Glad to know that
Long live to Uni!!!!

[Q] Need to replace headphone jack connector, anyone know where to buy parts?

Hi,
So long story short...I need to replace the Ear Speaker Flex Cable Ribbon with Sensor Part. My phone is not covered by warranty and I really need it to be working, I rely on it heavily for music and as it stands...the headphone jack no longer works properly. Only one of the earbuds work at a time, unless I spend a minute trying to wiggle it and hold it in place which is obviously not convenient. And it's not the headphones..tried many pairs and even tried plugging it to a set of speakers with the same result.
Any recommendations or anyone know of a site where I can purchase this part?? Any help would be immensely appreciated, I don't know how soon I'll be able to make the switch to the HTC Titan
A quick search reveals on eBay this and some other places, like globaldirectparts, mptgsm, oemcellphoneparts etc. (I used this search) but fortunately I didn't need any so I can't tell you about the service. For sure there are others.
