Htc Universal for sale! best offer will take it. - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hello my fellow universal owners, I'm selling my SPV M5000 in good condition. It has a few scratches on the corners and a small dent in the front of the case. The screen has no visible scratches and everything works perfectly.
Please note that the only problem with this PPC is that it disconnects from the signal and sometimes it doesn't recognize the sim card. It can go on for days working and suddenly it would disconnect and I wont be able to make or receive calls. I used to fix this problem by resetting the device.
I would like to get $350 for this but I would also consider other offers.
what’s included:
Original box
The actual device
Battery
Back door
Stylus
Manual
CD
Bluetooth headset (old style Sony Ericson I believe if I can find it)
Charger (if I can find it)
And maybe more… (I need to look for the rest that came with the phone)
I will add pictures upon your requests in the near future.
Thank you very much for your interest, and please do ask questions.

How to open the Alpines case to change LCD?

I have a replacement screen fror my Alpine. I located a site a while ago which showed in text and photos how to open up the xda IIi, but now I can't find it and I don't want to break anything guessing, any help would be appreciated.
Hi,
Can you please tell me where did you get the replacement screen ? I bought Alpine 5 days back and suddenly its screen is not working anymore. (PDA is fine only touchpad is not working). I can install all softwares and it works ok, but no more touch sensitive.

I got the screen from here, http://www.runpda.com/ , it cost £93.00
including shipping. But I got stung by UK Customs for £38.00 Tax, rip-off, so it cost me £131.00 in total. I've bought from this part of the world before and not been charged by taxman, its just the luck of the draw.
Someone suggested this place in the UK, but I had already ordered, if anybody tries this one, post costs etc for everyone. Mobile Repair Centre in London. 177a North end road 0207 610 3103.
I used this manual to open case, all the instructions are ok,
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Himalaya/Himalaya-Service-Manual/
they only bit that is confusing is the opening of the black plastic cover, basically follow manuals instructions to open cover by pen holder side, then slid a thin piece of plastic in the gap and slid along (I made a plastic tool from cutting a thickish plastic bottle). In the picture it looks like you place it in the SD slot, this is not the case, just slid along the edge of the gap you have created by the pen holder.
Hi again,
Forgot to mention, that the internally the screen just pushs onto a connector on the motherboard (just pull gently upwards to remove). I would disconnect it and reconnect it, and put your Alpine back together, just to see whether it was loose or not) Please ensure you use the write screw drivers as the screws are very small and you don't want to round them off), you need a mini philips screwdriver and a T6 size Torc screwdriver.
I'm not sure where you bought it from but if it is retail, then I would exchange or get your money back, if like me you bought privately then I hope my info helps you.

Sold my Qtek 9100 today... and am happy about it

After owning it for 5 month, I got rid of my Qtek 9100, it turned out a piece of junk..
First the Mail and Internet Explorer keys peeled off, then the gray paint on the sides peeled off, then the keyboard became loose, then the stylus began to fell off by itself...
I don't know what my next PPC will be, I am looking into something more rigid now.

Blasphemy...... and in a wizard forum!
I know what you mean though - maybe a prophet will do you, some times i think i would have preferred a prophet being slimmer more rigid and 2mp camera. But today when writing a long text. i know why i like the wizard - the keyboard

I just wanted to share my disappointment. I will talk to you after you own the Wizard for 5 months, PM me then with feedback.
Well I've had mine for 6 now, and here's my experiences...
- it's slower than expected ( yes, I could overclock, but really.. I don't want it faster that badly )
- the paint peeled off the IE/Mail/Soft key buttons.. ah well, big deal - the mail button goes to the start menu and the IE button clicks on the app close button, so the icons don't match my functions anyway.
- no paint peeled off the sides yet
- no loose stylus yet (I tend to collapse it before inserting it - maybe that reduces stress on the part that breaks off?)
All in all, I'm quite happy with it. Sure, I would've liked it faster, and maybe 640x480 would've been nice (and built-in GPS, FM radio, a 3.5mm headphones plug, better volume on hands-free (oddly, an episode of stargate I put on there plays quite loudly - so it should be possible.. haven't tried those reghacks yet), maybe a scroll wheel, and a 2-3MP decent camera would've been plusses)... but here's the thing... None of the devices out there that fit that bill (to greater or lesser extent) appeal to me. They're either even bulkier and less practical to me (e.g. Universal) or their button layout irks me (Magician, and upcoming 'Wizard replacement' Hermes), etc. Form-factor wise, the Wizard suits me best, and that's why I got it - the slightly slower performance (I noticed it in the store) wasn't so much an issue for me.. I'm not using it to play the latest 3D game.
I have had my QTEK 9100 since January and I have to say that it is the best phone I have ever owned. Of course it is my first Pocket PC so that doesn’t give me much to compare to. It does have some small issues but overall, I am glad I bought it. I am also experiencing the stylus fallout issue but plan to try the suggestion offered in another thread once I receive my replacement stylus next week. No issues yet with the paint but that is not important to me because I have reprogrammed most of the buttons to perform another function anyway. I also find it a pain to have to hard reset when upgrading the ROM or sometimes the device just starts acting weird (like windows 9x) so I just reformat it. Long process but it works. I would have to say that this device is not friendly enough yet for the average consumer but this forum has been a great help with resolving issues and offering tips. I think I would have gone nuts if it weren’t for this forum! The QTEK website is useless for help or ROM updates so I will likely not get another QTEK but will consider the same model from another manufacturer.

I just updated to last ROM using Qtek website, all what you have to do is registering your IMEI in their site, and then you can download any new ROM for free with instructions how to do it, plus there is area fo registered users where you can download Tonerings, games, appz etc... for free. Just wanted to defend Qtek Site and clearing this misunderstanding.

Thanks for sharing your experience.
I had the same paint problem with Himalaya device (qtek2020). I suppose this is due to wet hands I also have the same problem with my notebook ASUS M2Ne. But the problem is solved by annual ordering of the case for notebook and I suppose you can order cases for your handhelds too.
As for now, I don't have any problems as you did with wizard. I will try to be careful with mentioned areas

Wish it was that easy... tried that and they claim my number is not valid and that I need to contact the vendor where I purchased for updates... well that vendor is EBAY so I am SOL on that. So I rely on this site for my updates.
@keitht :
I guess that the person - who sold this to you - registered the IMEI already therfore you have to know his Username and Password to login, or tell him to delete the IMEI from his account, then you can register your imei for your account.
I don't know if you can reach the seller anyway, but I think this is what happened and this what can be done to solve this problem.
BTW I am happy with the Wizard, but this is only my 3rd day using it , that means this thread doesn't count me.
with regards to the paint peeling off... no, that's not normal, really. If you want these things to last, then you don't use decals (cheap keyboards use these... you'll see the letters 'chip' off) or paint (slightly more expensive keyboards.. the letters will fade) - you use cut-outs or impregnation. On the Wizard, for example, check the green/red phone buttons (when they're not backlit). Those will never fade or chip, as they're cut-outs.
Note that they could have used cut-outs for the other buttons as well, but cut-outs are slightly more expensive, and it would be even more expensive once you factor in branding (e.g. T-Mobile would need a whole special cut-out for their HotSpots icon instead of the IE icon - whereas now, that's just a different stamp)
However, even given that it's not normal - it *is* common, and I've just come to expect it from anything that uses decals/paints for any graphics/lettering. You lean to live with it, unfortunately
I have had more than 10 different pocket pc's and 2 different pocket pc phones in the last 5 years and have to say that my Qtek 9100 is my favorite handheld device yet. It has a great battery life, does not lose data if the battery dies, works great as a web browsing tool, computer, and phone, and also works remarkebly well with bluetooth. I find it to be the first converged device I have owned that I can just use, without having to constantly fuss with it to make it work. It is far from perfect, but definitely good enough for my purposes so that when I travel I do not need to carry my laptop, as it fulfills all my computing needs, albeit with a slightly less than ideal user experience. I am more than willing to put up with the minor idiosyncracies of the device when I consider how many devices it can fill the gap for.
I'm using my Wizard for 7 months now, and it's definitely the best PDA/phone I've ever had. Ok, the build quality isn't on par with brands like Sony-Ericsson or Samsung, but the functionality makes up for everything. I use it for push-mail, navigating, browsing, contacts and calendar. When traveling by train, I hook it up to my laptop and use it as a GPRS-modem (I've got flat-fee GPRS from T-Mobile), zo I'm connected to the internet and the office. I use it at home on the sofa for browsing and MSN when my wife is watching stuff I really don't wanna watch (like soaps). In my car it's used as a navigation device (Adapt 300 GPS) and it's connected with my BT Logitech headset.
The paint hasn't scraped off anywhere, but the stylus comes loose too easy (a single wrap of tape around the black tip works fine).
Great phone, I'd cry if I had to miss it
I have the K-Jam since october 2005, so almost 8 month now.
For me it is also the best PDA in years.
It's the first PDA that lasts longer than half a year with me.
And I don't even see a suitable successor in the near future.
I don't face the problems with paint peeling off.
Ok, the mail and the IE button have faded a little, but that's all.
And, of course, the speed isn't everything, it could be improved.
The stylus is a little loose, but it doesn't falls out (yet)
And I am very, very pleased with the pushmail and A2DP.
I've had my Vario for around 6 months now, and don't see any of the problems the thread starter has found.
I treat my phone with care amd respect, in return it keeps all its paint on for me.
It may be true that the Vario build quality is not a patch on the MDA Compact, but it's still in good condition.
I've had my vario now for 3 months and the main problem I have with it is the stylus not holding as well as it did when it was new. No paint peeling off etc.
It may only be a 195mhz processor, but it is faster than my Treo 650 with a 312mhz processor.
I've used most of the Treos' and this is my first device on the 'dark side'! The treo is simpler to use, but the wizard was the closest I could get with the same size form. Unfortunately for Palm, WM5 is streets ahead of Palm os - maybe that is why they released the 700w.
Anyway, the 700 is not an option for me in the UK.
Connecting to 2 bluetooth devices at the same time, stereo bluetooth capability - all things treo 650 users wanted, multitasking - the list goes on. I can see me upgrading to the 3G version of the wizard when it's time to upgrade my phone in the future, in a little over a year.
When I was given the phone by T-Mobile, I wasn't going to use it, and just use my Treo 650, but the more I read about the vario and then used it, the more I liked it.
The wizard rocks.
I LOVE everything abouth my wizard! I'll upgrade only to wizard with microdrive (when ever it be)!
My 8125 is my first "Dark Side" device too. I've never been happier. The only thing I miss about PalmOS was the wonderful screen realestate on my Tungsten T3.
I've punished the case on mine pretty badly too and it's never chipped or peeled. The only thing that happened was that little rubber "foot" on the battery cover came off. I wonder if the various style of Wizard cases are built by different manufacturers? That could account for this.

Buy or not to Buy: Screen Problem.. this is the question !

Hi guys,
well, i'm thinking to replace my Blue Angel with an Hermes. I have followed since september discussion about screen alignment and also the topic with POLL about SA problem.
At the end of the poll, we have noticed that SA problem has a spread of 50%.
So.... my problem is this:
I can scrape this PDA for a special price (brand new version of course) but i will not recive a cash voucer, so i will not be able to recive assistence or replacement for my device.
So if a recive a "NO SA problem PDA" i will be really happy, but if a will recive an "old serial number decive with SA problem" ??? what i will have to do ?
I have read about "credit card" and "removing foam" procedure, but are them realy able to solve the problem on every device with succes rate about of 100% ? Do they always work if well performed ?
thanks for all
I may be one of the lucky 50% with the one I have, but I had the Hermes now for 2 months, taking it to remote places like India and Indonesia, treating it badly as a work device and it still works falwlessly as it did on it's first day.
The only thing that got messed up so far is the screen since I use anything at hand (including keys and other sharp devices) as a pointer simply because I don't like to fumble around with the provided pen. So I recommend a good screen protector.
And - not to forget to mention - I tossed the case they provide at the first day - the magnets of the case were strong enough to make my ATM card unreadable when I accidentially had it close to the case - maybe that is the reason for most of the problems, stong magnets and electronic equipment usually don't go along together that well...
My 5 cents...

HP hw6515a boots up but the screen is all white! Please help w/ my 6515

I took apart one my hw6515a smartphones and gave the faceplate to my sister's boyfriend who paints at a body shop. He painted it blue to match my truck although i believe the paint he used was for a 2000 Acura. Regardless it looks awesome, however that is all it does. It boots up and you can tell that because of the sound and you can blindly make calls. However as the title of this thread reads the screen is all white from the moment you turn it on. It was working before I disassembled it. I have done computer repair for a living for the past 10 years and I thought I was careful with the motherboard and the other PCB. Anyone with experience with this please reply, thanks! Not sure if I somehow damaged the screen or I am hoping there is some little nuance I overlooked during reassembly. It was kind of a pain in the butt trying to connect the screens ZIF connector because it and the speaker wires are short and so they have to be reinserted while this case is almost all the way closed.
A little about me + if you want to by the HP smart phones: I have known of xda-developers.com for years but haven’t had the time to participate in the community up until recently. Two weeks ago I decided to try out wm65 and it it awesome! However flashlite 3.1 was working with all browsers on my original Fuze firmware and now it is not, anyway I am ranting, I need to go to the proper post for that...
I have a (3) hw6515a's. Actually I have 4 but two of them are broke and together can make 1 full phone. If someone wants to make an offer to buy them with all the goodies that originally came with them feel free! I love HTC and currently use a Fuze and a Tilt (aka Raphael) both running WM6.5 . I just sold my 8525's and have had earlier HTC's as well. OK enough confessing of my love for HTC. I have taken a picture of the blue HP using my Fuze's camera in case anyone is interested in making an offer and it is attached below. The HP is a nice lightweight smartphone with GPS built in however the 240 x 240 px screen can prevent you from using some apps the way you want although i downloaded a fix off that allows you to run apps designed for 320 x 240 px. OK I am gone, sorry for the blathering; my mind has not been working properly the last few days.
Sounds like a connection to the screen is not right.
there is only 1 connection for the monitor
That connection is a small zif connector. I have tried reconnecting it multiple times.

Tips for buying a used universal

Hello! could people please share tips and things to remember when buying a used universal? I mean what are the things that you should do to check or find tell tale signs of defect, hardware, the firmware the os, I have already done a search in the forums and already know some, but there might be things that I have missed, so help would be very nice, I will be meeting the seller so I get to inspect the device up close so it would be nice to armed with the info how to inspect the device from how to check the bootload etc.
Thanks for the help and I hope that this helps others too
The Universal can be bought cheap at german eBay. Look for MDA PRO. You should be able to purchase one for around or less than 100 Euro.
Preferably look for the following signs:
1) Unmodded. Many users got the Universal within a contract from the operator, but did not use it much, because it is too big for them. Such Universals are normally in good condition. When advertised that it ships with an OS different than WM5, you know that the owner has been flashing it. I personally don't like that, because that means it belonged to a power user and must be more worn out.
2) Warranty stickers. Make sure the hinges have the warranty stickers inside. If they are missing, the device has been opened. You don't want to purchase one that has been opened.
3) Screen. Screen should be without scratches and should have had always a screen protector.
4) Speaker. The external speaker which is used for calls can break, as it is fitted with some kind of pogo pins. Make sure it is working.
If you get to test the device first, do as this:
- do a call (bring your SIM card)
- check WLAN and Bluetooth (bring a headphone and try it somewhere with WLAN activity)
- bring a SD card and see if it is read
- check for bad pixels
- play a song
- take a picture
- try the keyboard and touch screen
- try all the buttons
If everything works, that is the best you can check it for.
Of course it could break the next day, but it shouldn't.
Cheers,
vma
Great guide vma!
I´ll just add:
Take special care on the swivel piece (The one that gives Uni it´s great and unbeatable form factor: PDA - Micro Lap top)
take care of another thing when i bouted my universal after i used it for about 1 week the phone was hangs soo much the reason was in the memory crd .....so you must try a memory crd and play a small video on it about 10 minutes
The most important thing everyone forgot to mention is USB port. When looking for a device, see if the port moves in any way or wiggles in its opening. See if the device synchronises with AS, charges etc.
The fact the device had been flashed or opened wouldn't play a huge part for me if everything else works well and the body is in sound condition, e.g. the hinge is not loose, the screen rotates and closes properly, all keys are present and work, keyboard backlight works with and without sensor etc.
Speakers don't just break, as post No2 claims (POGO PINS??), but it is good to check that phone is capable of making/receiving calls, you can hear the other party and the other party can hear you, can play music and earphone plug is in working condition/attached properly
Not reading SD or SIM card is a biggie, dim screen, lost touch sensitivity, scratched or damaged digitizer, worn out buttons - all obvious signs. You can open the back, remove the battery and SIM card and check for a small white blotting paper sticker covering the small mainboard pins under the SIM card, any change in color towards pink - do not buy.
@enigma1nz:
Shame on me, I did indeed forget the USB port!!! You should of course check both: charging and Active Sync connection. A broken USB connector is a mayor issue and hard to solder without proper equipment.
Regarding the speaker: I am speaking out of experience, as one faild on me. The speaker is like a small button and it has two contact plates. They are not pogo pins, but act like them. The speaker will be pressed by the case against two contact points on the PCB. What happens is that apparently some car-holders do too much pressure on the sides of the Universal casing, causing the speaker contacts to bend back and forth everytime the phone is placed or removed from the holder. After a few months the contact gets worse and worse until one of both plates brake off. Because they are so tiny, it is impossible to repair the speaker - believe me, I have tried. I ended up buying a new speaker cell at eBay.
Cheers,
vma

And believe me, I repair devices for a living. Thanks for the run-through, although I could give you the same. It happened to you, doesn't mean it happens often or it is a fault in design. I could give you a list of design faults in quite a few models of expensive cellphones on the market today, the mentioned speakers are not one of them.
I appreciate, the help people! any more inputs? I am happy that all the previous posts were, about how to inspect the device upfront and some other useful tips what to check other inputs will be highly appreciated
Battery can be also considered. Some are sold with good batery some with dead battery. It is not so expensive, but costs something. In general if battery shows less than 50% and devidce still works (even under load) that is a good sign.
Also as for the touch screen - the best test is to open note taker and try to paint something. The painted line must exactly follow the stylus movement if it jumps somewhere, then the touch sensitive layer is bad. I bouht such UNI on eBay (was described as perfect working order), had to replace the digitizer myself.
I do prefer buying not working UNI's on Ebay with good display. Once I bought not booting one - mtty job fixed that. Other time I bouht one where the display was still off - the flex cable popped out from connector. Etc....
Thanks for all the advice people! now, please welcome me to the HTC universal family, (well actually, I have a Dopod 900 but what the heck all are the same right?) your inputs had been essential, for me to get my new baby without any hitches I hope that nothing manifests after the one week assurance the seller gave me
Special thanks to enigma1nz for all the patience and help provided to me I asked her a lot of questions in the pm's but she answered in full detail
Now I have my own device so I will be flashing away, I hope without any problems. Again my thanks to the community hopefully there are more inputs for others who are thinking of buying their 2nd hand universal via meet ups
Excellent news! Congratulations!!! And welcome to the Uni family, of course. As you can see, we are one friendly bunch, all help and support will always be available. Have fun
