Frozen Shag control and lost WLAN in vista - Shift General

Greetings every one
I have searched through the threads to try and find a solution to my problem and I have tried hard and soft restart on Snapvu, F2 and F3 but nothing works
I am having a little trouble with my Shift 9500 running Vista. All was well until about a week ago when I lost WLAN. When I attempted to turn on WLAN in the SHAG Control, SHAG control freezes and vista tells me that the "program is not responding". Sound is also muted.
I do, however, have a network symbol in the notification area that tells me it is not connected, when I ask vista to diagnose the problem it tells me to install a network card and the software. So, I reinstall the Marvell Wi-Fi driver, downloaded from the HTC website, but still no effect and the same thing keeps happening.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have the same problem now. Got original preinstalled Vista and even after Hard reset WLAN seems to be turned on in Control Center but the WLAN card is not even seen on hardware list. Got latest Marvell driver installed. It's rather not hardware problem as WLAN used to work before hard reset. Maybe it has to do with Microsoft hot fixes (have automatic updates enabled) but run without SP1. It's driving me crazy when trying to enable WLAN or Bluetooth it takes minutes like you. Any ideas plase? Thanks

Well just an update, I did hard Vista reset and it helped. got fully functional wlan device, but still don't know what caused that. basically i see preinstalled vista here is damn unstable and never seen so many blue screens before :/

I just posted a message earlier about issues I've been having with WiFi now resolved by changing advanced settings in the chip set. Maybe of some use? If you can't even see the Marvell maybe the only choice IS to do a hard restore, or maybe even trying the copying of the sdbus.sys from the XP page into system32/driver and trying again...that's probably what I would do.
I must admit, most of my issues with WiFI started when I updated to the new driver from HTC....downhill from there.

And note their instructions don't tell you in which order to install the WiFi driver - yet all the others are very specific. Maybe that's where it all goes horribly wrong? I did mine last for reference.

I'd suggest if everything works fine then no need to upgrade and take this risk... i simply ignored new htc drivers )

Hey Fooftr )
How are you? Managed to overwhelm this damn WLAN? I was happy too early. Even though my automatic MS updates were disabled after hard reset and I haven't even touched new htc drivers, my WLAN dissapeared again under Vista after some time.
Have installed latest Marvell sd8686.sys drivers from htc and the only result I got is 'Device manager' indicates WLAN card drivers where loaded but device cannot start (Code: 10). Did simple uninstall and even after reboot Vista finds no WLAN device at all. Did same with SD Host and here it's finem Vista finds it and reinstalls drivers. I'm still patient as really like this ****, I mean shift )
I've also replace sdbus.sys (81KB) file with mine laptop one 87KB but no difference.
The only networking actions I've been doing were related to installation of NDIS drivers together with the first WinMo sync. Maybe this is it? Don't know and wouldn't like to hard reset it again. Also XP is not an option until touchscreen and sdhc support is solved.
Guys any thoughts? Ideas? Does anyone have the same problem with vanishing WLAN device? Again it works after hard reset so it's not a hardware prob imo.
Cheers Shifters ;o)

I did some progress yesterday and GOT MY WLAN working fine now. I've been trying to play with HTC Marvell driver folders content as despite of WLAN setup file there are other toolkits attached by HTC. IT's not ideal and does enable WIFI fine but enables BT as well however BT device cannot find any other devices - later down below about BT.
PLS READ THIS FIRST BEFORE YOU TRY, it's just my observation and may be only my case.
If you guys have the same experience with WLAN device as I do please try to do following, it helped in my case and now have all WLAN and BT enabled and visible in Vista SP1 after sleep/restart, whatever.
1. My Vista config is as follows:
- SP1 installed (eng)
- all updates installed from Microsoft Update
- all HTC drivers installed except Vitakey which I hear on other threads is causing some headaches.
* although I have all above installed I don;t think it;s a prerequisite. You only need latest Marvell drivers from HTC website.
2. Pls note, although latest Marvell WLAN drivers are installed I used to see no devices.
3. I've described what is a behaviour when I install drivers, devices appear for a few seconds on the list and dissapear at the end of installation.
4. So I went to WLAN folder /Wifidrvpatch/TOOLKITS and found HTCMEDIA.INI file with number of commands.
5. At the end of the file you can find three commands related to ECTKit.exe and vcpj_TSinstall.exe
6. What I did yesterday what enabled my devices? Started to launch them to see what will happen.
I launched three application but I'm not sure which one helped, my devices started to apeparing on th list after ECTKit.exe with one of parameters added.
7. Launch Device Manager and expand Network adapters. Right click on desktop 'My computer' and choose 'Manage'. From the list then choose 'Device Manager'. IF you don't see NEtwork adapters on the list it's probably same as in my case. go to next step.
8. Click Start->Run->cmd
change your path (using 'cd' command) to be in marvellwifi/wifidrvpatch/toolkits/tool where ECTKit.exe is located.
Launch ECTKit.exe by typing ECTKit.exe /EnableAllDevice
after that my devices appeared on the list.
As I said I launched three execs this evening. First was vcpj_TSinstall.exe (then clicked on install) but haven't noticed any change, dvices were hidden and shift was not much busy with this exec. Second I launched ECTKit.exe /RestoreAllDevice (Still no devices on the list BUT I've noticed Computer Management tool (the one you've opened to see devices) has indicated under 'System Tools->'EVent Viewer' -> 'Windows Logs' -> 'Security' that one of sys files is not loaded due to hash issue. IT's called CCDEVIO.sys and used to fail EVERYTIME when I tried to install MArvell drivers before (have checked logs history).
As the third command launched was ECTKit.exe /EnableAllDevice and this one helped.
What I suspect in my case CCDEVIO.sys may be causing problems but not sure. For example this sys file is trying to be loaded when I open WindowsMediaPlayer and fails as well so I'm not sure. Anyway that's the only misbehaviour I've noticed related to drivers installation.
Now about BT. It's also enabled. Got access to all functions, etc but there are two problems with BT.
1. My shift cannot find any other BT devices but can be found by my HTC Kaiser with no problems (still with limited number of services shared).
2. BT blue LED under the display flashes all the time now ) Well even if I disable BT Radio device and other BT related it does still blinks ) Well I don;t care anyway at least got it visible and can play further to force it to work. It';s still better than not having it at all.
LAst but not least this trick has not helped to frozen Shift Control Center tool. It freezes if I want to Turn ON/OFF WIFI/BT for coupel of minutes, then indicated device is ON or OFF, I can close it but it does not communicate with devices at all - meaning if I turn my WLAN ON thru control center it's not turning ON. Need to go to Network Adapters window under NEtwork Sharing Center and simply enable it. It's till fine as shagctrl sucks anyway, no brightness can be adjusted and when I try to access Settings, after 10-20 seconds got message 'Get EC firmware version failed' and settings opens (this error was observed even after my Vist agot hard reset some time ago and even after I installed latest EC drivers from HTC site)...
I'm not sure how HTC tests their drivers in testing environment but they probably outsource it to well known business oriented countries )
Sorry for long story but maybe it will help some of you. I'm damn happy got my WIFI working as do not need BT for now

Hello,
I have a similar issue withe Marvell Wifi adapter.
I restored the system to the manufacturer settings pressing F3 while booting and the problem remains:
If the Shift is powered off or hybernated more than 30 minutes and then powered on, then Wifi works well, the adapter appears in the device manager, and I can power it on or off with HTC comunication administrator (the progran which opens when you push the upper right button).
If, whith Wifi working, I suspend, reboot or power off the shift for less than 30 minutes, the Marvel wifi adaptor dissapears from the device manager, Wifi doesn't work and I can't enable or disable it from the HTC comunication administrator.
I have restored the system to manufacturer settings pressing the F3 button while booting for three times without success.
Anybody knows how to fix that problem or may I send the unit to the SAT?
Thank you very much

Hey, seems it's very unstable. Can you imagine I was to early happy with my findings :/ My WIFI appears and dissapears randomly but the behaviour is a bit different from yours. Mine is available even right after reboot (pess than 30 mins). What I do to solve it is when after turning on there is no device on the list I simply launch drivers installation and do not wait till the end. When I see BT/WIFI devices in Computer Management successfully identified (installation still runs) I simply kill the installer thru "Task Manager" without waiting for completion (as every time after completion devices again dissapear). With that I have a control over WIFI. It's a bit annoying but I can rely on that everytime so far.
Keep observing my shift behaviour what potentialy can impact that and even with WinMo synced and 3G working on WinMo side WIFI is still available. Last time it dissapeared after battery removal for 5 minutes max (to insert new SIM card).
BTW, once you have your BT available can you find external devices using BT built-in software? I cannot...
Even with that I damn like the SHIFT and find it very useful.
Will stay in touch

Solution for Activesync crash/freezing Wizard after re-Sync!

Hi. This has worked for me, and solved a massive problem. Hope it helps someone else too.
Step 1:
Ensure you are trying to fix the same problem as I was by looking at the symptoms, which were:
- HTC Wizard synchronizes OK when you plug it in the first time
- It stays in sync if you leave it plugged in
- If you unplug it and then plug it back in at any time later, XDA goes s-l-o-o-o-w and then freezes and will NOT re-sync
- If you unplug it and soft reset before reconnecting then it's fine
Essentially, the Wizard was requiring a soft reset between every connection to the USB cable, or it would crash and require a reset anyway!
These issues have been discussed in about 10 threads on this board, and on pretty much every other resource for Wizards and Pocket PC devices on the net. I was, however, totally unable to find something like this which directly addressed the problem.
Step 2:
Download a program called Dr. TCP from here: http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp
Run it to open a dialog box with loads of fields with strange techy names... no, i didn't understand it either. However, I've been searching the net for days and I found an article here: http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/index.php/id;504222574;fp;2;fpid;1277378924 which told me how to work the numbers out...
In the bottom drop-down box, select "Windows Mobile-based Device" and enter 1492 in the box next to that. That's your maximum "MTU".
Here are the settings which work for me (from the top). If i don't mention a setting, I didn't change it!
Tcp Recieve Window: 261360
Dial Up (RAS) MTU: 1492
Path MTU Discovery: Yes
Save and Exit Dr. Tcp.
Step 3:
You need to open "Network Connections"... in XP, that's Start > Connect To > Show All Connections. I'm sure you can find it yourself. Anyway there should be an icon called "Local Area Connection (x)" with "Wireless Mobile-based Device" written in grey underneath.
Right click on that and select DISABLE. This will close your USB connection to your Wizard so those MTU settings can be applied.
Now unplug your Wizard from its cable. Here, I tried right clicking on the connection and selecting "Enable", but it just errored. So you need to unplug it.
Step 4:
Reconnect and see what happens. I am now happily disconnecting and reconnecting as many times as i like and it just keeps on synchronising itself. MAMMA MIA!
If this solves your nasty "i need to reset every time I disconnect" problems then please post here to say so. If it doesn't work then post here also, I guess. If this is a solution for you then credit for this is not mine - it's just the sum total of a lot of searching across this and other forums, websites and message boards. THANKS!
not working
These steps did not work for me.
I still have to reset the device otherwise I get this message after about 5 minutes.
"Synchronization cannot be completed successfully. Reconnect your device and try again. If the problem persists, see the Microsoft ActiveSync Troubleshooter in Microsoft ActiveSync Help on your desktop computer."
It appears to be only a problem syncing as I can still explore the device.
well...
...that's depressing. I genuinely thought that would work for other people too.
Did you read that PCWorld article I linked to? it explains how I got those numbers... they could be different for you, perhaps?
I'll keep thinking...
I did not look at the article. I'm having other issues trying to get my 2 computers synced with my mobile device http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=234189. Once I get those resolved I can try some different things.
On my home computer I am only synchronizing favorites and files and it doesn't appear to be a problem.[/url]
Oh right ok. I read your other post too, but I only have 1 PC for home and work so i can't help with that.
Has anyone else tried this?
I am no longer having the problem since I fixed my other sync issue (multiple computers issue). I had reinstalled activesync and did a hard reset on my device so maybe something else got cleared up. I am also having much better luck with the way my device is running. Before I was getting frequent slowdowns and lockups. I am a much happier customer and will be sticking with my cingular 8125. I just love all the features, but the activesync issues and slowness was starting to get to me. I'm so glad it is all behind me now and I can start to really enjoy the thing. Although I have yet to connect my bluetooth headset, that may have caused me issues too. Sorry I couldn't be more help testing this out.
I and a work college have had this problem on both our systems and found that it was being caused by Avantgo.
It would work fine and sync every time for days until we installed Avantgo.
After these we both had the symptoms you describe in the first post until we did a hard reset and re installed everything except Avantgo, it was then fine again. As a test I then reinstalled it and it started not syncing again, my college who has not reinstalled it has had no further problems.
I have now been running for 3 weeks with no problems and no Avantgo.
If you have it installed it may be worth trying it without for a wile and see if it helps.
Didn't work for me. Still no connection when plugging in for the 2nd time. MTU value changes back to blank when opening the Dr.TCP again, the other values are ok though. But thanks anyway for the hints!
Greetings,
Andreas
Didn't work for me neither...
just to check (i know this sounds daft) but you did DEFINITELY press the SAVE button in Dr TCP before you pressed the EXIT button? can't imagine why it wouldn't store the data.
aaaaaaaaanyway i guess it's not the ubersolution i thought it was
Now I thought I had this working 100% using this hack (It was on a clean install of WM5 however so this may have been why it worked). Anyhow, it stopped working again after I installed PocketWeather ... now locks up whenever I connect....
I wonder if it is 3rd part s/w causing some of the problems with AS? Is it down to the scheduled update in PocketWeather or simply hooks into the ConnectionManager / ActiveSync from apps looking to see if a network connection exists....
I think some more investigation is required ... or perhaps I will flood MS with 1000's of emails telling them how flakey their software is *(Though I think they already know that)*
Any updated? I'm having this same problem, except my device won't connect at all! Even after a reset. It connected once and that was it.
Hi Silentz,
sure, I saved the settings. I'll try the ActiveSync clean install-method and report the results. 'Hope that MS will put out an update or better version soon! Rumours out there?
Greetings,
Andreas
tried and failed...
tried the above TCP solution- Not working for me either...
Found best solution. Go try the latest imate rom. You can then plug out/in the cable as many times as you want & it'll just work fine.

It seems to be as soon as you access the internet through the passthru connection on Activesync. So installing AvantGo/PocketWeather might explain this to a certain degree as they may be accessing the internet.
Incidentally, how could Microsoft have stuffed up so badly with Activesync? It's a tiny program but works so badly - Couldn't a third party come up with a different version of Activesync or something? I'd pay for it if it worked better than this crock!
Just for info, the latest iMate ROM (With Push Email) does indeed seem to fix this issue. Obviously it was with the WM5 side rather than anything that could be fixed on the PC side.
My Active-sink probelms disappeared since upgrade to the latest iMate ROM. Has been working like a charm with all apps and utilities installed, Tweaks2k2, Spb Pocket Plus, Pocket Informant, Worldmate Pro, etc...
told you it works
cheers
I am running the 2.08 (Qtek test) rom and have this issue since last friday. before that never had it!!
What I changed on thursday was: enable exchange server sync and use it. because push-email si no solution for me I just disabled it and dropped the association.
Then (on friday) the trouble started.
I tried DrTCP...and ended up with a broken netlogon (secure client) service on the pc. The IS solution for that was a new image . . thank you very much.
I am back on track with the pc now, but AS still slows down my device.
Are any of you having this trouble using or have used:
-Push email
-Blackberry
What is the amount of free program memory on your device? Mine is around 6MB (probably caused by Blackberry install which I cant remove). . . .

Wifi problem on universal

I have a strange problem with my universal. I want to know if it is hardware or software related.
Basically what happens is that sometimes after a softreset the wifi doesnt load (driver issue perhaps ?). Even when removing the battery doesnt load the wifi. The sometimes it does load and when i go into the comm manager and switch it on the wifi on it only starts after the 3rd time switching it on.
I have had it with all the unofficial roms available. Any solutions or work around to get this to work like it is suppose to or is it time to return and replace the hardware ?
Thanks beforehand
This is basically what i experience:
How to load PCMCIA driver after device reset?
I'm testing PXA255 device with integrated Texas Instruments ACX100
WiFI card on PCMCIA bus and I'm facing with BIG problem.
After reseting the device the driver for the card (tiacxwln.dll is not
loaded at the boot time), ok...setting by OEM.
There is an application installed in the device by which wifi card can be
turned ON/OFF.
Once I change the power state of the wifi device by built-in application
from "off -> on -> off" after I can use power management functions to set on
and off the card because then the driver is loaded.
I've tried everything to load the driver but I didn't succeded.
1. I've tried
ActivateDevice(L"Drivers\\PCMCIA\\Texas_Instruments-ACX100-EE1D", 0); but no
sucess.
2. I've also tried with ActivateDeviceEx also without sucess. (As I can see,
the driver has valid needed Registry entries for ActivateDeviceEx):
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\PCMCIA\Texas_Instruments-ACX100-EE1D]
"Prefix"="NDS"
"Miniport"="TIACXWLN"
"Dll"="NDIS.DLL"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\TIACXWLN]
"DisplayName"="LOOX WLAN Wireless Adapter"
"Group"="NDIS"
"ImagePath"="tiacxwln.dll"
3. I simply cannot load the driver with Device Manager. Just for tesing I've
tried to load driver "tiacxwln.dll" mannualy with LoadLibrary function and
I've noticed that loading tiacxwln.dll initiated loading of sequence of
other drivers automatically (ndis.dll, bus... etc). But I don't have any
use of that because after that I have to release allocated HANDLEs
to the system. So HOW I can tell to Device Manager to do that thing for me.
What I'm doing wrong!?
4. I don't want to use this registry key to achive the goal:
HKLM\comm\tiacxwln1\parms\ResetOnResume
P.S. After sucessfull turn on with built-in application I notice that new
entry in registry is created:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\Active\31]
"Hnd"=dword:00544880
"Name"="NDS1:"
"Key"="Drivers\\PCMCIA\\Texas_Instruments-ACX100-EE1D"
"PnpId"="Texas_Instruments-ACX100-EE1D"
"RegenumParms"=hex(7):\
53,63,6b,74,00,50,6e,70,49,64,00,52,65,67,65,6e,75,6d,50,61,72,6d,73,00,00,\
00,00,00,00,00,00
"InterfaceType"=dword:00000008
P.P.S. I'm changing the device's power state to full power on with this pair
of functions and it is working ok but with drivers loaded:
DevicePowerNotify("{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006}\\TIACXWLN1", D0,
1);
SetDevicePower("{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006}\\TIACXWLN1", 1, D0);
Got it from
http://www.tutorialsall.com/PLATBUILDER/storage-device/
Any ideas on how to get this fixed ?
Any suggestions on this ? my warranty is expiring soon and would like to know if i need to take it back to replace if it is hardware related. Pleaseany comment might help. Currently on helmi wm6 v1.1. Have basically tried all available roms to see if it is rom related.
Thanks for any help !!!

Frequent 3g connectivity on/off on vista side

Hi.
Anyone with same problem. I only have seen it on vista side. Working with 3g conectivity. One minute is connected with tray icon showing globe. Then 30 isnt connected with tray icon showing computers with red cross. Then again connected 3 minutes. It seems a problem between vista side and internet sharing service from snapvue. I ve seen this issue in other spanish shift. Maybe a spanish version problem? any idea?
Thanks
Not much help I know but see my thread titled 'continued vista connection problems'. Have you been using internet sharing to gain access to WM 6.0? i noticed Activesync was always starting on the snapvue side which I think is linked to the constant disconnections.
A full restore from the restore partition solved my problem and I now get a steady 3g connection.
Thanks for your response. Not alone now. Format is a solution but we should know the origin of this problem. Obviosly is related with the way connects to 3g, this is, using Internet Shared connection with snapvue...but...why suddenly activesync (client or server part) tries to connect the other side and breaks the internet shared connection? any idea?Did you install sp1? is your shift language english or other one? ( I am trying to discard sources of the problem).
pd. While I write these lines on winmo side I can listen vista side sounds (connect/disconnect each minute...)
Hi,
I did some changes and It seems (by now) the problem is solved. I ve playing with continous 3g connections. This is what I did (I dont know which one did the trick).
1) Disable activesync usb connections for both sides( I did it for vista side days ago but know I did too in snapvue size.
2) Sevice Sync bluetooth Server stopped and set manually.
3) Reset both sides
Now I ve a stable 3g connection....

Glad you got it working. What do you do to disable Activesync on the Snapvue side?
I only noticed this problem after installing SP1 but I was working mostly with WIFI so cannot be sure there is a link.

Hi.
The problem is solved, now for sure. Open Activesync in winmo, then menu/connections and uncheck "use usb ...". I removed too the partership between both sides althought It isnt important, I think...
Thanks Daniel. Good to know incase it happens again.
Today I am having the same issue...mmm, I dont know what else I can do. I will post the events I can see in the event's viewer....

Hi Daniel - are you still having these problmes?
Hi. I didnt have that issue anymore. I removed the partership whith the device on vista side. I remove "Usb connection option" on activesync in both sides. I uninstalled "Remove NDIS Share connection" (Device Manager) on vista side and rebooted. Then on restart vista recognized again the device(Remove NDIS Shared connection) after some minutes(5-10 min) and then all worked correctly. I think the last step did the trick. But I am not free of problems. Like I told before when I resume the device and It was hibernated/suspended for a long time (several hours) the 20% of times It cant connect 3g and even I cant restart vista but keeping pressed the power button. So, by now, If my device is going to stay suspended for a long time (night) then I turn it off......
pd. When I need connect vista and snapvue I turn the phone off. I enable usb connection in both sides and use usbtools. After using the connection I undo these steps and all works correctly by now (last 3 weeks).
Ensure too that Vista hasnt setup a new Windows CE device on Device Manager. To check it open Device Manager, then "See devices by connection" and check each usb connection. If you see any Windows CE device disable it. I think both Remove NDIS Shared connection and a Windows CE Device was fighting for the same usb connection (In my case)

OK, the only bit I hadnt tried was the uninstall of the NDIS in device manager. I'll give it a go and see what happens. Thanks again for this reply!
Thanks Daniel for your detailed description on this problem, which I also have. Interesting thing is that for me it only occurs when I am on the move with my Shift. No problems when my Shift remains on my desk (like others described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=381220&page=2 )
On your described solution: I removed the Vista/Snapvue partnership and the usb connection on both sides. But I am not able to do the next step: "Remove NDIS Share connection" in device manager, because it's not there (see attached screenshot). Does this mean it was never there, so I do not have to uninstall it? Or is there a different way to find it?
Hi.
Reset Vista to ensure It boots correctly. Then wait to be 3g connected. Once you are connected the device "Remote NDIS shared connection" should be there under network cards. Then uninstall it and reset again. Once booted you have to wait several minutes until vista detects it again and installs drivers.....
pd. And try to contact HTC. Maybe (only maybe) if HTC is reported with same problem from many people they releases a fix.....
Hi there,
That did not help at all!
Waste of time.
But thanks for the hint.
What DID help for me was closing WMDC through taskmanager.
When you just exit WMDC, task manager still shows that it is running there in the background and apperantly scanning your ports for mobile devices ore something.
I stopped it from running and have a stable connection now.

Do you have to do this each time you start vista?

I think you only have to do it after you used WMDC. On my shift it doesnot start at boot (not anymore...) If I want to sync shift or my kaiser, I need to startup WMDC manualy.

My experiences so far.
Is it possible that it is the energy plan that is responsible for the loss of connection. I installed SP1, no problems it seemed. Today I wanted to use the 3G connection with the battery (balanced energy plan). And then it started to disconnect and to connect in small intervals. I did the routine Daniel described: uninstalled NDIS driver. Reinstalled it but connectivity problems remained.
Is it something to do with the battery powered system?
Because, as soon as stop using the battery, plugging in the power adapter again everything seems to be okay. I am not sure about it, but I think, when I use the max power option with the battery the connection stays and fails when I use the balanced energy plan.
So can it be that something in the energy plan is responsible for the loss of the connection?
Experts, does that make any sense?
I will give it some more tries.
S.
I had the High Performance powerplan on all the time......
had it to
Hi
This is a problem when sp1 is installed and you are using 3g in vista being in balanced or power save power plan. it has nothing to do with activesync and usb ports (i have never had a connection)
i called htc yesterday, they clamed they had never heard about it before, so please as many as possible call htc and tell them then maybe just maybe they would release a fix
in rhe meantime i uninstalled sp1 and everything works
In my case the solution is quite clear.
3G works in Balanced mode and in High Performance when power is plugged in. I am not so sure if it works in “Power Save” even when on power.
3G does not work when either on “Balanced” or “Power Save” when using the battery. Battery works in “High Performance” even when all the options are set like they are in “Balanced” mode.
This I found somewhere else in the forum. It is from Daniel and I guess he says the same, more of less.
Well. I ve been doing many tests and changes and I thing the sd, suspend crashes and 3g closed connections are gone.
I use equilibrated energy plan but I hadn’t any issue when ac connected so I ve modified this plan to make equivalent the behavior when not ac connected, but not success. The problems are still there. Its incredible because the configuration for ac connected/disconnected is the same I ve modified all the parameters (usb, expressPCI, , etc)
So I ve set High performance plan and I ve modified it a little bit, only screen brightness when no ac connected and now all works correctly. I start the system (no ac connected). Then I suspend / wake, hibernate/resume the system several times being ac no connected and the problems are gone. 3g connection is very stable. No crashes from standby to hibernate state. No sd missing problem. So by now I will keep in this "High Performance" modified state
pd. So It seems that a plan is compounded by customizable parameters by the user and hidden parameters)
Now, those who have not installed SP1. Is this really no issue for you? Or have you always been on power or always used “High Performance”?
Well, even when I plug in my external battery and the green light indicates that the machine has been plugged to power, even then it only works in “high performance” and not in the two other modes.
Very strange!

At a loss with activesync

I'm at a complete loss with activesync. I've done everything I can think of and I can't get my computer to see my 8525. I've reinstalled activesync and hard resent my device. When i plug in it says
one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows did not recongnize it
usb root hub (2 ports)
- unknown device
- usb composite device
Am I missing some sort of driver somehow? I don't know what to do..please help.
Hey i had the same problem. Is this your first time installing/using activesync??
Well what I did was this:
-Install activesync 4.2 from the CD (CD that came included w/unit).
-Uninstall activesync 4.2 (don't delete any drivers installed by the CD)
-Install activesync 4.5 (download it from Microsoft Website)
-Plug in your 8525 to the PC via USB cable, and your PC should NOW recognize it.
This is what I did and it helped. There may be a better/alternate way in doing this, but I FINALLY got Activesync to work!
Oh and see if you can help me with the prob. that I'm having.

Ya I can't find the CD that came with my phone for the life of me.
ok found disc and tried that. Nothing. Could my phone be broken?
heres what I had to do to get AS working again.
Delete the current version of AS from your PC
Go into c:/wondows/program files and delete the AS folder (Windows may not let you delete some DLL's.
Go into the registry and delete any AS entries you can find, or do what I did and use Ccleaner registry clean up program (Google it, it's freeware)
Restart the PC
Install AS 4.2 from the AT&T/Cingular disk.
Install AS 4.5 from MS.
Hook up your 8525 and all should be well.
Tried that....didn't work.
Still hoping someone has some advice. I've tried two different usb cables and used different ports as well so it's not that.
quick update...
I searched through the forums and googled a few things and from what I can tell other people have had this problem and not found any solution. I am considering trying bluetooth but I don't have bluetooth for my PC...can i get some sort of adapter? Also...Is there a specific driver I can download for the HTC hermes that might fix this issue?
Yea your situation sounds like the one I used to have.
Do you have a firewall?? If so DISABLE it. I have COMODO and even though I would press "accept", the drivers wouldn't install completely.
This is what I did:
-Start your PC.
-Uninstall Activesync through the Add/Remove.
-Delete the Microsoft Activesync folder in the Programs folder.
-Restart your PC
-Wait till your firewall loads up. Disable it.
-Go through the procedures I mentioned in my 1st post.
Oh and make sure you have internet access. I'm not 100% sure if internet access helps, but it could help with the drivers.
Even though I just got my 8525, I don't mind helping someone
tried that. no go. I think i'm going to just have to get a new phone.
Did you try disabling the Advanced Network Functionality?
START -> SETTINGS -> CONNECTIONS -> USBtoPC
Yes. when I do that it makes windows see my device, but windows does not know what my device is. Thats why I think some sort of driver might be missing, but I don't know how to fix that.

So... with the RNDIS checkbox UNCHECKED and your FIREWALL OFF, you get the USB Device not recognized error? In that case, ENABLE it and look at these other settings:
1. In the PPC open ActiveSync, then select Connections... from the menu and make sure the Synchroinize ALL PC's using this connection: USB option is checked.
2. In Windows (XP) check your ActiveSync connection settings (see image).
3. Did you try the AS 4.5 Connection Trouble Shooter?
4. You should also try another computer, just to double-check.
There is no driver to make AS work, AFAIK. Question: What happens when the RNDIS checkbox is enabled? Does Windows report an error or simply doesn't connect?
Tried all of those things, still device not recognized. I do need to try another computer but unfortunatly do not have access to one.
When i click that RNDIS checkbox nothing of interest happens. If it's clicked on when i connect windows very briefly see's the device (although it's not recongized) and then the little symbol for unknown device on my taskbar dissapears. If I then click it off windows will again see the device and the little symbol on my taskbar reappears, but it still doesn't recongnize the device.
Wow. That's a strange problem you have there. At this point, it could be a hardware issue. You could try installing WM5Storage or CardExport just to check if the USB hardware is working (bad cable?). Also, try checking your PPC registry, specifically, HKLM\Drivers\Usb\FunctionDrivers. It should look similar to mine (see pictures attached). I believe these keys tell Windows what to do with the device when connected thru USB. Other than that, try a flashing a new ROM from the SD Card, something like VP3G's which is known to work correctly.
Branden,
I have this problem from time to time. My solution is as follows: make sure the usb cable is connected to both the phone and the computer, even though you are getting the unrecognised error message.
Reboot the phone (soft reset) while still attached to the usb cable. Do not rush anything. Input any unlock passwords when prompted by the system but be aware that booting up can be slow, so give it time.
Once the phone has booted up you should then see activesync kick in. You may have to try this several times before it works but it always works for me.
One thing I would advise is to disable/deinstall any auto locking software, eg S2U2. These tend to kick in on long synchronisations and throw the usb status out.
Hope this helps.

Hi! You didn't by any changeuse memmaid or something to clean up the notification queue? (if this sounds like gibberish, you probably didn't) Let me know!

Same Problem
Just to let you know your not alone ...
I am having the Exact same problem at the moment .... fortunately i do have access to another PC ... My Laptop connects to it with no problems what so ever .... so it obviously is a PC issue and not a Phone issue
I too have tried all the currently posted attempts at a solution to fix it but so far nothing has worked ... i am beggining to think that i may have to do a fresh intall of XP and that would Phiss me off
So any further suggestions would be doubley appreciated
Tried everything mentioned since my last post and still nothing. Also I am now getting the white screen issue again (Which I fixed originally by buying another hermes that had a crushed usb port and swapping the screens out). I think I may be about ready to move on to another phone as this is now my third major problem with this model of phone (although one of the problems may be an issue with XP).
I had the same problem. I updated my WM5 to WM6....and it stoped syncing with my computer. Went back to exchange it. Later, I learned it wasn't the problem with the phone syncing.....here's how you can fix the problem.
Click on Start>Settings>Connection Tab>USB to PC
Uncheck "Enable advanced network functionality"
Click on "ok"
I just upgraded to wm6 again and followed these steps....now it syns fine.
It worked for me.....hopefully it will work for you.
Peace

Dodgy Communication Manager

I bought my shift last week and I've already encountered a few problems which are tied with communication manager. When i try to turn on bluetooth, it says its turned on but there's no icon in the system tray and under device manager, bluetooth isn't even listed. When i go to control panel to alter the settings, it appears that vista thinks bluetooth is turned off. Any ideas?
Secondly, in the communication manager, it says wifi is turned off even though i've connected to my router and freely surfing the net. Sometimes when i try to go to advanced settings, i get a pop-up saying something along the lines of "EC FIRMWARE VERSION FAIL".
I've tried doing a system restore and also uninstalling and reinstalling the communication manager software.
Can someone help me out? is the communication manager the be-all-and-end-all of controlling wifi and bluetooth?

everyone seems to be having problems with the mananger. i would try to mess around with it or maybe resetup/reinstall vista. maybe someone else also has some suggestions.
strange....i don't seems to have any problem with the comm manager, that is before and after install sp1
No problems here either, although I still haven't installed SP1 - I've installed all other available updates.
ive installed a few updates but whether SP1 was installed im not too sure. i phoned up htc support and they suggested i do a F3 Reset.
on another note, does MS office come pre-installed as standard on the Shift? I have it installed but its asking for a s/n which i cant find anywhere in my shift box.
