Would this be possible, Vonage on Cingular 8125

Would it be possible to only use medianet unlimited with Vonage, and dump cingulars over priced voice plan. I mean, being that Vonage operates soely on your internet connection, why wouldn't it work on medianet or Cingulars PDA plan, vica versa. Pitcure it, you get unlimited calls to US and Canada, all the goodies like call waiting, three way calling and caller I-D, all for $29.95. That beats out Cingulars 450 daytime, 5000 night and weekends, for $39.95 any day.
So, is it possible? And if not, why?

I don't think that it would work because I believe Vonage is VoIP which is kinda like skype and the GPRS network isn't fast enough for that. Feel free to correct me (anyone?) if i'm wrong though.
But what about edge, wifi, or 3G. Wouldn't those be fast enough?

edge is the same as GPRS, its the cellular data network. Edge I don't believe is fast enough. Wifi is fast enough, but you have to overclock your phone in order for it to actually work well...or at all. Not sure what 3G is, so I can't comment on that.
It's theoretically possible. There's a version of SJPhone that works with Vonage and runs on the WM5. All you need is a soft phone on your vonage acct and SJPhone should be able to connect over GPRS or WiFi.

Can you elaborate on this a little more. What exactly is soft phone?
A softphone costs $10/mo on your Vonage account and works with software on your PC. The Vonage interface device isn't required. Every time you connect to the internet with your PC, no matter where in the world this is, your softphone number is available. SJPhone is software that runs on WM5 that allows you to connect to your softphone number on Vonage in the same way.
Alright I have the software SJPhone, I found the beta version for WM5. And I am sure that even before I install it that there will be some configuration required for vonage.....
I have gone and google'd..... These look like the setup instructions....

Cingular is one step ahead of you... Kind of. There was an article about 2 weeks ago and cingular said they don't mind that people are using VOIP on their network. But Edge isn't fast enough. I have Skype on my device and running it via Edge is worthless, so get yourself a Hermes adn move to a 3g(umts) city and Voila, your golden!
I just got back from houston and they're selling the HTC TyTn for $1,099.99. You can get it on ebay for $779.99 with 29.99 shipping from Cali.
I have activated a vonage softphone but I am having trouble with the configuration. If anyone had some light to shed on the subject that would be great. The guide I am looking at looks like it is just about to turn 2 years old.
IT WORKS!!!!!!!! well I initialized a call I can't really test it though cuz the wife is sleeping and if I make the phone ring too much she'll get peeved. The above configuration is good, just don't bother with the proxy stuff just put the domain in..... i followed their screens just a little too well.
what connection u using it on?
The only issue with SJPhone I saw was, like skype, it would be "speakerphone only". I'm guessing GPRS would be fine for the connection if you use a low speed audio codec.
Well I lied i made 1 phone call and that was it it doesn't work now I don't know what i did
Is this any help?
SJLabs: Vonage on Pocket PC thread
Very helpful now I no longer recieve the "Nat/Firewall" Error. Thanks for the info. I will do more testing during the day tommorow and I will post my results. I am currently using a T-Mobile MDA with the new OEM firmware update.
I talked with the wife for 45 mins while using wifi, I used the headset supplied with the phone because I have not figured out how to incorporate my Moto H700 with it, but otherwise it was great. The edge at my house is only so-so, therefore I will say that using this with edge so far has been impossible. When I go to work tommorow I will let you know if it works better where I know there is 100% edge, and when I am not on the fringe of a network.
Theory into practice it would seem. Nicely done matrix849! I'd always wanted to try this but never really had the time to spare.
Seems as though the tytn would be the best way to really test if this would be absolutely possible. I mean with its 3G technology and all.

at&t killed my AT&T 3G service!

As I can't seem to find ANY help on the Cingular forums I figured I would see if anyone here knows whats going on or if there is anyway to get my phone working again.
Basically it all boils down to this..
I don't get voice or data when a 3G network is available. It will connect, then say "No Service" moments later.
The phone works fine when no 3G network is avalable.
Again, everything was working great on the 3G network (Voice and Data) until Sunday, May 20th. Everyone I have talked to keep saying there where no changes.. but there was.

If you feel so inclined to help me out or want more of the story and details. You can view the Cingular forum post here: http://forums.cingular.com/cng/board/message?board.id=cingular&thread.id=41937
I am not the only one with this problem but I sure feel like the only one.
Thanks
They've been changing the cell sites from Cingular to AT&T; given the old SIM and their complete disdain for Blue customers, I'd bet that's the problem.. Just go on the Smartphone Data plan for $20 and you'll save $5/mo.
The only Data plan I can get is mMode, which is great because I get it at $24.99 for Unlimited use.
The problem is I get "No Service" (Voice + Data) on the phone when in a 3G enabled area.
I'm a "blue" sim holder on a HTC branded TyTN with a legacy mmode unlimited plan (out of contract) running Dutty Premium in downtown Chicago and I've got 3G as we speak from a tower calling itself AT&T. Moreover my connection is not using the wap or ip settings: that is I have created a connection that has all the fields (except for the connection name) blank. Granted I can't access the oh so important Cingular video but that stuff is crap anyway (highlights of the Sopranos...wowwee). What I can do is VPN (Cisco IPSec and Windows PPTP), Remote Desktop, pull email, full browsing on PIE or Opera and 128 kbit MP3 streaming.
Occasionally I have had to reset my device (mostly since upgrading from 1.38) because I have lost all connectivity (phone and data) despite showing 2 or 3 bars of signal. My suggestion: create a new connection that's blank and but first try a reset (if you haven't already). You might want to think about trying a new Radio ROM as well.
Thanks! Glad to hear it is working for you. (Means it should be for me!)
My towers still however are "Cingular". But of course that shouldn't matter at all.
I guess I could try a custom ROM and do the update to WM6. ( If I can't get anywhere with tech support or customer service. They are supposed to be calling me back later today.)
Just using the latest official at&t ROM currently.
They just called me back assuring me it should be working and that they have a case open. The engineer I was talking with said that both he and his supervisor plan on watching as case they are curious about the outcome as well.
At least I feel better now knowing that it "should" be working for sure.
It's also nice to hear that upper management in the engineering department as well as tech support want to see what happens as well.

Voice and Data at the same time

Hey guys I currently have an 8125 and i'm looking at upgrading to an 8525 since they AT&T has upgrades on there website for around 75 dollars. I wanted to know other then the benefit of 3g spend is it possible to use data and be on the phone at the same time using an 8525? that would be my main reason for upgrading.
Thanks
Nope not possible on the Tytn's
okay that's what i figured
but this would be possible on the tilt right?
Actually you can. I'm making this post thru Internet Sharing while listening to my voicemail. Unless I didn't understand the question?
My understanding of this, data and voice at the same time, on a hermes is that is is possible, but only if one is making use of 3G. A GSM/GPRS/EDGE only area will not allow for both at the same time.

What can I do with an non Activatable Titan.

I got my titan about a week ago from ebay. And after a week of dealing with sprint to get it activated they told me it can't be activated in the system but luckily I had called before I purchased my phone to confirm the ESN was good and they reassured me it was so there going to send me a replacement titan. They told me I don't need to return my phone so basically I have an extra phone that can't be connected on sprint.
So how can I make this a productive phone with out cellular coverage and is there a way to lock the phone from placing calls?

well, it has WiFi, so you can use it as a mini internet tablet around the house, you could use it to stream music wirelessly from your PC, watch youtube vids, use it as a regular PDA or even use it to test custom ROMs
i thought it was possible to change the esn to a 6700 or another 6800... that would give you a working sprint phone to use..
Use it as a dedicated GPS, just need an app that has the maps on the phone already.
Thanx for the ideas, I was thinking of trying android on it.
Sell it for parts - They are going around ~100+ for bad esn phones. Would help pay for the working one.

So is there an Android ROM for the Titan somewhere?
I ran got a copy of it in this website
http://it029000.massey.ac.nz/vogue/
you unzip it to your sd card and run the exe file. I was disappointed since it runs on ram so its slooow and buggy but its worth looking at.
Flash it to Cricket then sell it. Cricket excepts bad ESNs. Or sell it to me.
limitless possibilities
1. it has wi-fi, so you have all the net
2. if you don't have wireless, you can use the new mogul as a wi-fi router, and you will have internet etc. which can all be run thru blue tooth. I am currently doing this with my working titan and an old blue angel. Really sweet!!!!!
3. it uses micro SD cards which are now cheaper than dirt. You can load Music galore and stream out thru BT, my wife is an avid reader and you can load a hell of a lot of books onto a 1-2G card
It can do damn near everything except make an independent phone call. You could probably VOIP it too.
Enjoy the free toy!!
Why can't it be activated? Is it on the bad list, if so that can sometimes be removed.
Without a network connection you wont get aGPS so no chance of instant gps lock. But it will still function reasonably well as a gps after you get a lock. I would recommend installing quickgps and htc gps tool and use it as a gps device (along with a off network gps program such as TomTom Nav, iNav, GarminXT etc.
It could also be a reasonable MP3/vid player but a lot bulkier than purpose built devices.
I like the idea of using it as a mini tablet pc and buy yourself on of those full size bluetooth keyboards (the virtual keyboard I mean, not the actual one).
Android hacking would be fun too.
I had the same problem, but I couldn't activate it because it wasn't a sprint phone...being with GSM I didn't know about that stupid rule.
so, I just flashed it with a cooked rom and sold it to someone with sprint.
Cut my losses, bought for 200 sold for 200...Never been so glad to get rid of a phone in my life.
VIOP
i didnt see anyone mention it...

I would offer to send it to the guy developing the vogue port of Android so that he can have a titan to develop with which could help out the effort of getting Android on our devices and finally get rid of WinMo which is just bleh.
Thanx for all the input, I ended up selling it on ebay. I just couldn't see my self carrying 2 titans at the same time.
By the way is there a way to make the sprint mogul work on the nextel network? I'm already planing on moving to the touch pro but I dislike my work phone Nextel motorola i580 (the worst phone i've ever used). I know there is a way to put a sim card reader on the mogul but I also know that nextel uses iden instead of cdma.

what's wrong with the service today

I don't know if this is happening to anybody else but today all day i had no service at random times, the onlyt way i'll have service for a couple of minutes is if I shut the phone off and turn it back on but it only last a couple of minutes and then no service again. I live in new york has this happened to anybody?
This happens to me occasionally, but I live in an area with crappy signal. I've found that my radio "Gives up" sometimes.
Solution: Use anycut to make a shortcut to "operator selection" you can select tmobile and you're right back on without restarting.
When this this start happening to you,cuz where I live the service was always great until today and I had my phone for about 2 weeks now with no problems until today.
T-Mobile is already aware that there is a problem with the network and working to fix it.
yeah i just read another guy's thread about the post, thanks
I didn't even read that it was your thread, my fault but is it a problem that only affects g1 right now cuz my girl and my mom are both on tmobile and they're phones were fine, my girl has my old wing and my mom has a blackberry

Nope t-mobile said it is affecting voice and data for all phones. Although this could be in certain areas. I can confirm the LA area is having voice problems on 2G phones as well.
oh, thanks for posting the info,if you find out more let us know.
Well now that I think about it it has happened more than usual today, maybe even yesterday? It's hard to tell. I sort of live in a black hole.
just noticed... I am now able to get my location using the 3G network only... weird... and service is back in full for now LOL
The g1 is only affected because it is the only device that t-mobile sells that has its own apn's
Data is cutting in and out in PHX for me... Making my poor GPS useless...
Interestingly, you can still use PING DOMAIN/IP in PTerminal even while your browser isn't working...

Yeah I'm on border of scottsdale and phx, get 3g here. Mine has done this ever since I got my g1. I'm gonna try the shortcut idea, I usually turn off and on and it works again. Not just today for me.
This is not a G1 issue or a 3G issue. This is a network issue with all of t-mobiles networks. They are working on the situation and it should be fixed.
all internet or just g1 data problems
Here it's just the g1 (utah) My G1 has been spotty. My friend has a wing. I was trying to troubleshoot. Wile I couldn't connect, he connected just fine. We tried this several times during the day. This has been going on the last 3 or 4 days. Love my G1!
I am in Detroit and my phone was fine all day long. A few minutes ago I just noticed that my 3g icon on the top bar is gone, I tried using 2 g networks only and still no data service. My phone works for regular phone calls and wi-fi but no data coming. I will re-star the phone to see what happens.. Anyone else having this issue???
Just did rebooted and 3G is back on and working...
