Hello everybody,
I am new to the PDA community having bought my first Pocket PC, an IPAQ 214, a few days ago. I am still trying to figure out what software to use to get productive with that thing. It's all a bit different from normal PCs.
However, I installed Opera 9.5 beta (and also the Wifi update from HP of June 2008) and find that web browsing is really slow compared to the other computers which connect to the same wireless router. I suspect that there is some problem with the wireless connection but the wifi info doesn't really give a lot of detail. I am really wondering with what connection speed the IPAQ is connecting. WifiFofum does not give such information, neither does WifiKnife. PocketWiNc doesn't want to work at all, complaining about not finding a wifi device.
But maybe I totally on the wrong track and the rendering does already exhaust the capabilities of the IPAQ.
Has anybody an idea how I can find the problem? Are there freewares giving more information about the connection? Any suggestions how to improve the internet browsing experience?
Many thanks,
Bob

I wonder if anybody could help me? What it is, is that I am disabled. My fingers are paralysed, and so working the intricate parts of the XDA is quite difficult. It is not impossible, but it is hard.
I also have several friends who are in the same situation as me. 12 months ago they were given xda 2 each for free. None of them have used them much because they are difficult to use, because they are stuck in their ways, and because I don't think they really realise the full potential of these little devices. It has took me 12 months to get hold of one of these, but just within a few days I'm quite bowled over with the potential.
So I wonder if somebody would be prepared to lead me through making the most of my XDA, with my disabilities, so I can also share this knowledge with the other disabled guys who also have this Pocket PC?
The first thing I want to do is set up the basic software, to maximise connectivity with my home network. I have already started this, and had some help in this direction on this forum, but I am still a bit stuck.
I have loaded this Pocket PC software onto my xda 2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=17410&highlight=jojo . I have windows XP on my desktop computer. This is hardwired to a 3Com wireless router. I have bought a SDIO wireless LAN card. When you install the software, it virtually sets its self up, the connection displays itself, you select it and have a choice between a Internet connection or a work connection. If I choose work, I am able to connect to the Internet and surf the Internet, but I am not able to do an active sync. I have gone into my start menu/settings/connections/network card/network adapters/socket WLAN SDIO V1 driver /name server and set the WINS to the IP address of the computer I want to connect to as somebody suggested to me, but it doesn't work. I also cannot see the other shared directories on my computer's on the network. (I do have Norton security on, but I have tried these with Norton security disabled.)
Can anyone make a suggestion?
Thanks in anticipation, funny keyboard.
i would like to use my universal as a WIFI card when its connected to my laptop. Though my laptop has a built-in wireless card, there are times when my universal can pick up a signal and stay on it while the laptop cant.
as such, is there any possobility to link up the universal to the laptop and allow it to fuction as a WIFI card for the laptop?
are there any instructions on this? appreciate any and every help that i can get on this. thanks
For that either your laptop would need to connect to the Exec through BT dial up, or the Exec would need to act as an Access Point plus Bridge. Not very likely to happen. BT is very slow, so I'd think you should scrap that idea.
I am surprised to hear that your laptop has an even worse WiFi antenna than the Exec. I thought this was already the worst possible... My old iPAQ 6315 has a much better reception.
Humm, I'm not sure. I went to a microsoft confrence on mobility and the new features of Windows Mobile 5 a few months (year or so?) back, and asked this exact question. I was told that it's impossible, the operating system simply doesn't do that- something about the fact that it deals with the phone part very differently from the way it deals with the wifi part.
...maybe you should go give a hand on the linux port?
i am surprised too that my laptop has worst wifi connection than my exec but this is only applicable when i am in school. in public areas, connections on my laptop are pretty good and stable.
i wish i could help with the linux but i am not sure how to even start coz i am not a programmer. what would be required of me?
Hi,
is there any solution for getting LEAP working on Wizard. It seems that I-mate AKU 2 ROM has software for it since I can start LEAP program and add new entries, but it's not working - I can't connect to my corporate WLAN.
Is there any solution for this problem. Will this be at least in some new ROM, etc?
I'm in the same boat.
I've done countless searches and hours of investigation. Some have reported success, but I have contacted them and done exactly as they did and still no joy.
My network administrator claims that we are not using any restrictive protocols and/or options on our network and is also puzzled as to why it will not connect. It does attempt to connect to the AP, but authorization fails everytime.
I have official given up. If anyone can provide insight I believe that many would be indebited.
Perhaps you and the admin should take a look at the logs and figure out where it's stopping exactly? I haven't had the need to use LEAP yet so I can't really comment but a little sniffing around will probably tell you what's going on.
My main question is: Is LEAP working at all on Wizard? My previous device was iPAQ 4150 and it was working perfect using LEAP in my corporate WLAN - so I don't think that the problem is in some restrictions.
With the new AKU2 ROM came an add on for LEAP - the software is there, but is Wizard actually using entries that I enter there? It seems that it doesn't.
Well I have some encouraging news for you ...
My last PDA was also the 4150, and I could not get that working on our corporate WLAN either ... therefore ... you may have better luck than I.
Best of luck ... if you get it working, could PM me please.
Thanks, Greg
it's amazing why enterprises are still using the LEAP when its proprietary to cisco when many non proprietary types of EAP are easily available and better support..
PEAP for one is totallly free, offers similar if not stronger authentication and works with most recent windows operating systems
I have gotten it to work. The last version of Funk Odyssey works. You can download a trial from Juniper's website.
I did a search and couldnt really find out on how to do this ?
any ideas?
i tried enabling internet connection sharing doesnt work as well as i hoped (as in i couldnt figure it out)
can anyone help me out ?

I hope it helps. I am using a Palm Treo 700p as my Athena's dial-up modem because of EV-DO speed and cheap rate ($30 for unlimited data).
now a days might work better usinbg a windows mobile based device of which verizon offer a few. with wm wifi router
Hey guys, this is the noob here. I was foolish enough to go to iOS forums looking for answers but quickly found they're, let's just say, unfriendly. Anyway, my issue revolves around iDevices dropping the PAN connection with Windows Mobile phones after 20 seconds. Is there a registry edit on the WM side to fix this? It's not the ICS app because my ES400 works perfectly on both my Windows 7 laptop and my Mac desktop (OSX 10.6). The PAN connection doesn't fail with an iPhone though. Some Androids like the DX2 work perfectly as well without root or 3rd party apps. This is baffling because I'm not about to give up my ES400 anytime soon.
Same problem here - any closer to solution?

Hi,
I have the same problem here. Got a new iPad for a business project and it will connect OK to an Android phone via Bluetooth PAN (even if phone not connected to internet) and the connection will stay open. However in our case we are trying to connect to a Windows CE 6 device and this exhibits the same behaviour. After around 20 seconds the bluetooth connection is closed even though before it closes you can use Safari and get a webpage up.
Windows CE is closely related to Windows Mobile so hopefully finding a solution in one will also work in the other.
