Note: see the fourth post for info on how I fixed this.
My Vario II (now on Three in the UK) has, for the last month or so, begun to disconnect at random intervals. It will be working happily in a full 3g signal, then it will suddenly bring up the "no connection" !x, which will then turn back to 2g and then 3g.
It's not the network - I have a PAYG Three sim which I used to check for coverage before I signed up for a contract, so I put that in my old e61 and sat the two connected side-by-side and it doesn't have any of these problems.
It's a complete pain because on the days when it happens more often it destroys the battery life, anything down to about 4 hours in a full 3g signal, as well as stopping any chance of push email working properly.
I've tried several radio ROMs and none of them make any difference; I've also tried switching back to a known-good ROM which I know used to work fine, so I'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue.
Does this sound like the "dying radio" problem other people have talked about? Or is it likely to be a dodgy connection in the phone?
Ta!

I think I may have fixed it: a couple of months ago I reformatted the microSD card after some file corruption and I told it to use FAT32 (since I assumed that would be better); however today I found a post on the web (on this site?) somewhere (which I can no longer find, argh!!) which suggested that might cause some problems. I wish I could find it now because there must be something about the type and size of card (it's only a 1GB) because FAT32 is obligatory on SDHC cards, yes?
Anyway, I've reformatted as FAT16 with a single FAT (http://tinyurl.com/6pdhtx suggests the increase in speed is significant) using mkdosfs for windows (http://www1.mager.org/mkdosfs/) and had no dropped connection since. I'll keep an eye on it but I'm thinking that may have been the problem... is this a known issue?
Is there any reason why FAT32 on a (non-SDHC) micro-sd card would cause the radio malfunction? A power drain issue maybe?
Anyway, like I said, I'll report back in a few days.
Edit: it just dropped out. Back to the drawing board.

Stuff that. I just watched it drop out while the SD card was removed completely so it can't be SD related.
SOLVED!!!

An update for anyone experiencing this problem.
In desperation before I bought a new phone I took this one apart (first level only, I didn't dare take apart the slide because last time I did that - with an SGH D600 IIRC - I couldn't get it back together (!)) and reseated everything I could see, as well as giving it a damn good clean with a can of compressed air and some (dry) cotton pads.
I also used a small flat-bladed screwdriver to prise up the SIM contacts just in case they had, over time, become too flattened to make a consistent contact.
Since then (two days ago) my phone hasn't dropped out once. It's been connected through IMAP IDLE all day and battery readings are dropping less than 4% per hour (which is better than I've ever had it with push email turned on)
I'm somewhat annoyed I did both things at once because now I'm not sure which solved it. I'm inclined to believe it was the SIM contacts because I can't really see how cleaning the phone would make a difference, unless it had managed to get something metallic in there. I do feel better about it being clean though
I suppose it's possible that having gunk around the chips might restrict the airflow (there was a lot of crap in there) and therefore produce problems but, like I said, I don't see it.
Hope this helps someone else with this problem, anyway.
Useful info - good to get your follow-ups
For clarity: this isssue is related to random loss of network connection and excess power drain.
It is not the random power loss issue where the entire device switches off.

has anyone else had the problem of loosing reception for no reason...after a soft reset i have full reception...but that happend last nite and just now...the fones in standby mode :S
i've had a problem "losing" signal, but i think that's just because Cingular reception isn't the best where i work, but at home it's actually full bars all the time.
r u using wisbar advance? if u r, then its a known issue..they are workin on it to get it resolved..
im on tmobile usa. not only does my mda looses its signal but also when it does, it becomes a pain to get it back...it normally takes me a minute or two to get my reception back...
hmmmm mine seems fine now...i dont know why it was doing that :S :?
I've noticed that twice so far on mine...for no reason, it searches for signal in an area where i have never had problems with reception. Maybe Cingular was working on their network during those periods...who knows.
Today was the first time I lost signal since I got this phone (with the exception of a room that's been jammed) and the cause:
A couple of hours ago I had my phone on my desk inside one of my note books (yes my desk is messy ) and as I was lifting the note book, the phone slipped through and hit the floor and came to rest with the mini SD 1/2 way out.
Later my friend comes looking for me and said the phone doesn't ring. Turns out my SIM had become dislodged and was about 1/3 the way out  Put it back in properly and all is well.
Might want to check the sim.
I've had the same problem...at home I frequently have a full set of bars...the all of a sudden I have no bars...then its a pain to get it back; sometimes requiring a reset. It's a real pain. Anyone else have this problem and found a solution; I am running the test ROM
This kinda thing happens to me with my XDAIIi and its because i use a cheap (slow) SD card, it somehow interferes with the radio when inserted, so i have it popped out all the time.
It might be the same thing with the wizard, what kinda mini SD card do you all use?
Guys,
Don't flame me... I haven't fully tested my theory, but so far it's working well!
As you know, MANY of us have issues with the card not being recognized sometimes; the device hangs; the camera doesn't capture images, etc.
Well, today I was trying to take some pictures facing downwards (of a leak in my car door), and I would just get a black image almost every single time.
I would then do a test and snap a picture of my garage, and it worked.
Back to the door, it didn't work.
Etc.
I wasn't sure if there wasn't enough lighting or what.
HOWEVER.....
I then realized that everytime the unit was pointing down, THAT is when it didn't work!
I examined where the contacts are on the card (top), and sure enough, it MAY be that by the force of gravity, one or two contacts are losing contact.
So I tested my theory.
I stuck my thumbnail (the REAL one, not a mini image ) under the card, and pressed it up.
EVERY single picture worked PERFECTLY.
No freezing! No black! No issues!
So, I took a small peice of paper, and slid it under the card, like a shim. (It was actually a piece of an envelope, so it's a big thicker.
Gentlemen... Since I put that paper underneath the card, my 8525 has worked flawlessly.
I just took 20 pictures, stored on the SD card, and not one issue!
And this is a 2GB Sandisk, by the way.
I will do more tests, but I am really feeling confident that this may solve some of our problems.
(I hope this is not a "welcome to last week" thread! I have seen LOTS of threads regarding the camera, freezes, and SD issue.. but I never read anything about solving problems with a piece of paper!)
Thoughts???
Hi Michael_514,
While I appreciate your efforts here, the one thing that seems to have solved ALL of my SD Card issues was upgrading to WM6. Nothing to do with gravity nor Elfen registry edits ... just a new OS.
While I think your tack, dealing with gravity and the directional orientation of the device is interesting, I think the heart of the problem exists in the drivers for the SD Cards, which were corrected (or at least ameliorateed) in the newer OS builds.
All the same, I am interested in your final results, so please continue this post.
All the best,
-pvs
Don't forget guys, maybe you are both right! We should not assume that everyone has the same problem - though the symptoms may be the same. Actually, when reading the many posts on this issue, I AM convinced there is in some cases a poor contacts issue that will afect the camera and other software/files on the SD card. I am also convinced there is in other cases a driver/software issue that may well be improved with WM6.
Always be cautious, yet open minded about claims from folks to have solved an issue. It may be for some but not all, and a different solution may exist for others.
Mike
Point taken, Mike. Thanks for that!
Just tried it. I will keep you informed tomorrow.
Thanks for the responses, PVS & Mike.
Mike -- Love your 'have an open mind' role! I guess that's why they call you a Moderator!
I would agree with Mike... both answers could be correct.
I am convinced that 90% of our Hermes woes ARE SD Card related.
I feel that because I had these units for 7 straight days, in use almost all day, with not one crash or hang...
..and then on day seven, I did a SD Card copy/paste, to switch cards with my dad's unit, and from that day on, freeze.. freeze.. freeze... Sometimes the unit is great for three days, sometimes, 3 reboots in one hour are required....
...Same thing happened when I reinstalled the firmware....
...that I just 'knew' that the freezes and hangs were DEFINITELY related to my swapping of the cards. Especially since I installed no weird apps.
Dirty contacts; bad connection; bad card controllers; I KNEW that my woes were not 'OS-related', 'sbd Pocket-plus-related', nor firmware related... Especially since I did three reinstalls of the firmware.
PVS - I totally agree with you. Perhaps WM6 has some better error checking, or a better algorythm for handing missing bits over the card bus.
I know a little about how computers and electronics handle this. It's why you can make a scratch in a CD, and it still plays. Check bits / error correcting / over-sampling / etc. etc.
I agree that a more advanced OS, like WM6, can better "handle" missing bits.
..but I am trying to get to the root of the problem.
I just went to the bathroom and took about 30 photos while sitting there . ALL 30 worked! No black photos. No "New SD Card Inserted" message. No freezing. 30 on 30. I am thrilled so far!
After spending three weeks racking my brains out, dealing with the problems, I am starting to truly feel like I may be on the right track.
Let's keep our minds open... Let's remember how many 8525 issues do point to the cards. Let's keep in mind that half the people love their Sandisks, and half the people love their Kingstons.
A new OS may solve people's problems, as could a piece of paper jammed in there to make the contacts tighter.
I spent $720 on two of these units, and let me tell you.. I MISS MY 8125!
I am as eager to solve this as anyone. I use this machine for business. It's not just a hobby for me.
Maybe we are on the right track...!
Let's see what others say...!
I will keep everyone posted.
I do have to laugh at my make-shift solution, though! There is something funny about staring at my unit, with a little piece of envelope visible under the SD card. Talk about a low-tech solution to a high-tech problem!
M
Michael_514, I love your theory. I hope it's that easy a solution for some of us if not all.
It seems from reports that Sandisk cards have this problem more often?
If owners could report their card's thickness using a micrometer, this might help confirm if an electrical contact issue is more likely?
My Corsair 1Gb card is 0.70mm thick, just behind the electrical contacts.
I've had issues with the card not being detected both with WM5 and now WM6. One time was fixed by wiping the contacts clean, but other times ejecting & reinserting the card make no difference. I've ignored the problem and many hours later the card would be visible again.
When I read your post, I straight away folded up some paper and pushed it in above the card, on the same side as the contacts - the memory card was still accessable within the phone, so I'm thinking my issue isn't a physical one.
Next time the card vanishes from explorer, I'll insert some paper to shim it towards the contacts and see if it helps.
Has anyone pulled apart their phone? I'm wondering if perhaps there's some type of pressure applied to the back of the card forcing it to contact electrically? Maybe if this is a mechanical device it is getting stuck?
My old phone's SD card slot broke when I dropped it once and it no longer ejected cards normally, but still worked perfectly.
Cheers! Oggy.
Hi there!
I just wanted to confirm where I put the paper.
I put it UNDER the card, effectively 'pushing the contacts up'.
That is where I stuck my thumbnail when I could not take a successful picture of my car door.
When I said to myself, "Why do all photos of the sky work, but not photos of the ground??", that is when I realized that I wanted to "push it up".
And in terms of the:
This firmware vs. that firmware...
Kingston vs. Sandisk...
WM5 vs. WM6...
Made in Taiwan vs. Japan...
Those are NOT the answers.
Too many people in too many threads have proven that.
I am not saying my method is correct... I will need a week of testing... But I know people DID have problems with WM6. People DID have problems with Kingston. People DID have problems with 512MB.
I started another Kingston vs. Sandisk thread, and reading those responses has shown me that it ain't the answer.
And as Ogier says, "I've had issues with the card not being detected both with WM5 and now WM6."
So, that also isn't the answer.
Let's all keep our fingers crossed, because I HATE rebooting this unit!
But to confirm, I put the paper underneath to 'force up' the contacts....!
@ Michael_514
Just another thought. There is also a difference between photos of the sky and photos pointing down and that is the light level. I know you are testing the idea about the contacts and angle of the phone, but to confirm it's nothing to do with the light level sensor/software you might need to test by taking high light level pics (pointing downward at a lamp say), just to rule out any light level sensor issue. I have noticed that the camera seems to incrementally adjust light level but in general it will be at a different setting pointing up as opposed to down.
As I say just a thought and something to rule out or in.
Mike
I don't know if this is disappointing but I have tested this method during the weekend and it does not work. I have definitely inserted the shim under the card so to push the contacts up. After some time my card is partially lost meaning some programs will not run. This morning I'm in the office and I have replaced the shim to sit just under the contacts and not under the entire card. I will keep you posted although I don't trust it will work.
SD troubles
hi guys,
ive been looking at these SD card related threads in the past and was thankful that my hermes seemed fine...
UNTIL
the speaker connection popped out and i opened the phone to connect it back up. everything when fine and the speaker is working but the sd card refuses too show up. now ive tried putting paper under and above the SD card and ive also changed my ROM to two different WM6 flavours. im sure all the connectors are plugged in but i really need my SD card to be shown.
Anybody experience something similar or have and idea's on how to get it working again. it only stopped working after i removed the back panel, connected the speaker back up and then closed it.
thank you,
Drooch

Not much to suggest other than open up again - double check connections and hard reset if it still does not work.
Mike
ive checked the connections and they seem fine, i really cant put my finger on what has changed from me opening it and then closing it. the only difference is that there is no void sticker anymore! is there anyway to see if it still see's the sd card slot or if the OS diesnt even think its there.
Ive tried HR and ROM changes, so its something hardware wise.

Maybe you said, but does the card work ok on a PC card reader? Just wondering if the card formatting is corrupted?
Mike
Again, after rechecking this method, putting two pieces of paper just under the contacts area of the card I still get the "once every 6 hours" normal card failure. I just remove the card, wait 5 seconds and insert it again. That's it for me.
Hi All!
Two interesting discoveries..!
First of all, so far, so good.
I did not have to reboot my once since Friday. Today is Monday, and not one single freeze. Normally, I like to reboot every few days just to 'clean it up', but I am going to leave it until it freezes.
Friday evening, Saturday, Sunday, this morning...
Not one system hang.
However, I did take a few pictures that came out black. That's the bad news.
I have not looked at other threads yet, but as Mike alluded to, above, there IS something wrong with the light sensor.
Remember how I said I had problems photographing my leaky car door, but then other pics were fine?
Well, yesterday my father said to me that he took a few pictures of items in his showroom, and some items would NOT be able to be photographed!!! He said that he has some gift items with SPARKLES, and he could successfully capture photos of items without sparkles, but when she shot the sparkly items, he saw black.
Then I thought about the pictures I was taking, the pictures WERE of dripping water from my car door.
I think that a unit that hangs, or an SD card that's not recognized, MAY be a totally separate issue than black pictures.
But that still doesn't explain how I was able to take all sorts of photos when my thumbnail pressed on the SD card.
In any case, like I said, I have been extremely successful with 'no black' pictures this weekend, and have not rebooted my device since Friday. This is a miracle for me.
I just removed and inserted a clean shim.
If I could get another three days without a reboot, I will be jumping for joy!
My unit just hung!
I had disconnected the unit from the Activesync USB cable.
Went upstairs.
Came back to find the unit on (Backlight on) and the unit was very hot, with the battery being sucked down 1/2.
I had set an Alarm for 1:00pm, and it's now 2:10pm. It started playing a second or two of the Alarm sound just now. And that was it. Very hot to the touch.
But I am happy that this is my first re-boot since Friday.
These hangs/black photos/hot battery drains may all be different issues, but I am still definitely leaving my shim inside the card. No reboot since Friday is a big improvement for this unit!
Good day
I recently upgraded my TyTn from WM5 to WM6. Since upgrade 1GB and 2GB Apacer micro SD's that worked fine are not recognised by the phone.
Am I missing any setting in WM6? Can someone please help as I need to access info on the cards ASAP.
Thank you
Just got my new PQ1 2G card and replaced my old 2G Sandisk. My first impression is speed - much better with the PQ1. Also the general feeling is that it fails less or not at all. I have to work with it for the next 72 hours to give you my statistics comparing it to the Sandisk.
I'll keep you posted.
NO. This feels the same as my old Sandisk 2G memory. Every 4-5 hours my SD card stops responding. Mind you in the PQ1 case I can still see the card with my Explorer and even see the directory structure and the files. They just can't run. The messege I get is the progrmam is not found.
I've been experiencing a lot of radio issues lately. It'll work fine for a day or two, then show no signal and an 'x' in the data icon for a day or so, then suddenly start working. It's not affected by a reset.
i've flashed 4 different radios on it, and they all behave the same. i also have a Tilt and it maintains a connection while the 8525 does not.
could the antenna be loose inside? do you think the radio is going out?
Same problem here any progress? It do not have signal, then have signal...
same problem for me... please someone help us :-(
christmas is coming
Try flashing 1.48.00
Same problem here for about a month. Odd.
tighten sim card holder
I spent weeks reinstalling radios and roms and almost $100 trying to fix this problem. I finally tightened the sim card holder and it fixed all my "no GSM" and spotty coverage issues. The sim card is held in by two tin brackets. I bent them down a bit so the card was held in more secure and all my problems were gone! I really thought it was a software problem. It really still doesn't make sense because I had the problem with or without a sim card in it. But, who cares, now it works! God is good!
I saw this thread and its the same problem i was having, read through it and saw the post about bending the sim card holders down a bit and it actually worked, thanks for the idea
Hi I did the same thing. It worked for a while but started again. After opening the phone a hundred times, flashing a hundreds radios etc what i did and worked was clean the sim card with an eraser. Trust me, u will not get no gsn again and always give u a signal.
I have similar symptoms, although the major difference is that the device crashes and does a hard reset by itself.
Still, I'll try bending the SIM holders; there's nothing to loose at that stage...
Hi to all of you..my o2 trion was alright till a few days ago.. it started overheating.. that's how it started: I was using my laptop and i connected the o2 trion to it..i didn't dare to put the o2 trion on the table in case i moved the laptop and my phone fell down.. so, i placed it on the laptop, just below the lcd screen. after a few hours of surfing on the net, i disconnected my phone.. it was warm, but not hot!!...after using it for what seemed like a few minutes, it started to get warmer, without using wifi.. it was weird. Then, there came a point where it was too hot to hold it..i preferred switching it off. after it cooled down, i tried switching it on again.. a few minutes later, it hot again.. i forgot to mention that within less than 20minuttes of hotness, the battery changed from 100% to 0%. I phoned htc and they told me that there was a problem with the battery. Weird coz its a new one. the brand of my battery is DYNAPACK.. is that a good brand?? what do you think is the problem?how can it solve it..HEEEEELLLP!!!! i cant even use my phone now..if i can't find a solution to it ,I'll have to send it to htc and pay the repair costs.
Are you absolutely sure that wifi is switched off? I had this problem a while back which was being caused by the wifi connection refusing to switch itself off.
Solution was to take the battery out for about half an hour, reinsert, install a different comm manager to the one I was using, switch off wifi using the new comm manager and the problem rectified itself.
If you search on here there are a number of instances of overheating phones with various solutions.
Hope you get it sorted.

If you're running 3G, the battery will die in around 12 hours. To avoid this, go into phone options and change the Band from Auto to GSM.
Dude, see if anyone you know has the same phone and try your battery in theirs. if it still overheats in their phone get a new battery. Personally I'd get a new battery. That would tell me right away if its the phone(warranty call) or the battery (not covered by warranty). However, if you continue to use you could do irreparable damage to your hermes. Cheers....

in the options, i can select only gsm + umts and i can't select only 1...i'm sory, i don't have any friends who use htc phones...they all use nokia or sony ericsson
I was having a very similar problem with my phone randomly heating up and the battery life dropping rapidly... so I got a new battery, and within a day, starting doing the same thing again.
I never use wi-fi or bluetooth, so I knew that wasn't the issue, but I did notice it was always connected to 3G.
So, I installed Kaiser Tweak, and changed the setting to have it disconnect from 3G after each session (checking email or surfing web, etc).
That one change dramatically improved my battery life AND more importantly, stopped the overheating. It's like a completely new phone now.
had a friend with the same problem but the top part of his phon would also get hot. this morning he found a dead capacitor on his front camera board. removing it has fixed his hermes... If you think you can check and have a hot spot at the top of the hermes, I would look into that. will update if theres any problems later... cheers...
hi! thanks for your replies!!i went to the local htc centre and the guy said that they have to replace the motherboard..they said that they will get new stocks next month..they said they cant tell how much the price will be..but do you guys know the approximate price?
like ultramag69 said mine was a faulty cap, and mostly prices for this stuff ranges from $200 (for simple stuff like battery) to $500+ for the board swaps, if not covered by warranty. just pray they do a through test and actually fix the problem
That's crazy!!!a motherboard which costs nearly the same price as the phone itself!!!i was ready to spend $100 on this but $500 is WAY too expensive...if i try to sell it on ebay, approximately how much will i be getting for this?? and are you sure about the motherboard price?

Ok first off im a total noob when nit comes to Windows mobile. Ive been using a Palm treo for 2 years and was given an att 8525 for free i just have to see if i can fix it. i have searched for my issues in other threads and found some but not all of the issues, so here goes
~Screen fades to white and if squeezed on the left side will come back but then fades out again and it seems to be worse when slid open. (i believe this is the flex cable issue that ive read about)
~Radio drops out one min i have full bars and the next nothing. i havent found any patterns to it.
~When send sms it will send a few but then i will get a few that come back saying phone not ready.
~Power button has a almost exact 23 second delay from the time you push it to the screen comming on ( i noticed that after i did a fresh install of wm6 it went away for a little while and then came right back)
~Wifi wont connect to secure network (i enter the PW and it will connect then as soon as i igo to a website it says cannot connect and then asks me for the PW again)
~SD card inserted and phone doesnt show any signs of recognizing it including when you go to setting/system/memory it says card not installed, doesnt even light up when you insert the card
Thank you in advance for any help even iif its direction to a forum that has answers that might help.
Damn, your 8525 has alot of problems, iam guessing it was dropped??. There may be a chance that all these repairs will cost you the price of a working used hermes. Anyways, I had the same radio problem as you, and it was the most longest, and stressfull thing ever to get it to actually work. I was opening up hardware, flashing radio/roms, using mtty, numerous of times. Trust me, its not worth it. And if your flex cable is damaged its gonna cost $30 or more to fix. And if wifi or SD card slot is broken too, the device is practically an PDA of the past. You could try to fix it(With the possiblitiy of killing yourself from all that stress), or sell it on ebay for parts(sells for a decent price actually).
Thank you for your response. was kind of afraid that was the response i was gonna get. damn that sux. the $30 for the flex cable i could swing, but from what your saying it sounds like majority of my issues are hard ware and not software (like i was hoping) and ive priced most of that out and might as well buy a new one i agree. thanks though ill keep playing with it. but now i know not to get my hopes up.
For sd card problem, you might be able to get it to recognize the sd card if you insert then do a soft reset, others have had this issue. I'd also check to see if the sd card is registering on the pc with a card reader because if its not, you may need to get a new sd card.
Wifi, Might be a rom problem... Read up on the thread if others have this problem, might have a fix or might need to find another rom...
Here are Some of the Fixes that i have found and some of the issues i am still having~~
~Screen fades ---fixed Kinda, i have disassembled the phone checking all the connections and putting tape tightly over all connections, i still get the white screen on occasion but its %90 better and i can always press on the bottom ov the screen and bring it right back
~Radio drops out one min i have full bars and the next nothing. i havent found any patterns to it. (still an issue but am trying to update radio ROM to one that i read in the forums that is supposed to be better for my carrier. If i can get the RUU issue corrected)
~When send sms it will send a few but then i will get a few that come back saying phone not ready. (i have found it is realted to the radio issue above)
~Power button has a almost exact 23 second delay-- i have found it seems to be correctable if i make sure there are not alot of stuff running. (found a program that actually closes the apps with the x button instead of just minimizing them)
~Wifi wont connect to secure network--didnt really do anything but seems to be working again (who knows)
~SD card inserted and phone doesnt show any signs of recognizing it including when you go to setting/system/memory it says card not installed, doesnt even light up when you insert the card... still an issue but now it will on occasion recognize the SD Card.
Thank you in advance for any help even iif its direction to a forum that has answers that might help.
