my battery us draining WAY too fast and overheats - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi to all of you..my o2 trion was alright till a few days ago.. it started overheating.. that's how it started: I was using my laptop and i connected the o2 trion to it..i didn't dare to put the o2 trion on the table in case i moved the laptop and my phone fell down.. so, i placed it on the laptop, just below the lcd screen. after a few hours of surfing on the net, i disconnected my phone.. it was warm, but not hot!!...after using it for what seemed like a few minutes, it started to get warmer, without using wifi.. it was weird. Then, there came a point where it was too hot to hold it..i preferred switching it off. after it cooled down, i tried switching it on again.. a few minutes later, it hot again.. i forgot to mention that within less than 20minuttes of hotness, the battery changed from 100% to 0%. I phoned htc and they told me that there was a problem with the battery. Weird coz its a new one. the brand of my battery is DYNAPACK.. is that a good brand?? what do you think is the problem?how can it solve it..HEEEEELLLP!!!! i cant even use my phone now..if i can't find a solution to it ,I'll have to send it to htc and pay the repair costs.

Are you absolutely sure that wifi is switched off? I had this problem a while back which was being caused by the wifi connection refusing to switch itself off.
Solution was to take the battery out for about half an hour, reinsert, install a different comm manager to the one I was using, switch off wifi using the new comm manager and the problem rectified itself.
If you search on here there are a number of instances of overheating phones with various solutions.
Hope you get it sorted.

i switched my phone and wifi off. The phone seemed to be hetting cooler.. i used ,y wifi and it seemed get hot as usual, when surfing on the net.. however, when i switched on my phone, it started getting really hot..i don't know what is causing this problem...can any body help me?

If you're running 3G, the battery will die in around 12 hours. To avoid this, go into phone options and change the Band from Auto to GSM.

Dude, see if anyone you know has the same phone and try your battery in theirs. if it still overheats in their phone get a new battery. Personally I'd get a new battery. That would tell me right away if its the phone(warranty call) or the battery (not covered by warranty). However, if you continue to use you could do irreparable damage to your hermes. Cheers....

in the options, i can select only gsm + umts and i can't select only 1...i'm sory, i don't have any friends who use htc phones...they all use nokia or sony ericsson

I was having a very similar problem with my phone randomly heating up and the battery life dropping rapidly... so I got a new battery, and within a day, starting doing the same thing again.
I never use wi-fi or bluetooth, so I knew that wasn't the issue, but I did notice it was always connected to 3G.
So, I installed Kaiser Tweak, and changed the setting to have it disconnect from 3G after each session (checking email or surfing web, etc).
That one change dramatically improved my battery life AND more importantly, stopped the overheating. It's like a completely new phone now.

had a friend with the same problem but the top part of his phon would also get hot. this morning he found a dead capacitor on his front camera board. removing it has fixed his hermes... If you think you can check and have a hot spot at the top of the hermes, I would look into that. will update if theres any problems later... cheers...

hi! thanks for your replies!!i went to the local htc centre and the guy said that they have to replace the motherboard..they said that they will get new stocks next month..they said they cant tell how much the price will be..but do you guys know the approximate price?

like ultramag69 said mine was a faulty cap, and mostly prices for this stuff ranges from $200 (for simple stuff like battery) to $500+ for the board swaps, if not covered by warranty. just pray they do a through test and actually fix the problem

That's crazy!!!a motherboard which costs nearly the same price as the phone itself!!!i was ready to spend $100 on this but $500 is WAY too expensive...if i try to sell it on ebay, approximately how much will i be getting for this?? and are you sure about the motherboard price?

I have been told by a service centre that my main board has a fault they wouldn’t/couldn’t tell me the exact fault!
Basically the device started randomly rebooting and sometimes would not even get past the splash screen.
I managed to get it stable in boot loader and re-flash the device hoping it was a software issue before sending to service centre.
My questions are what is the most likely cause of the above and is there anywhere where I could get the board fixed or buy a new one at reasonable cost as the service centre wanted £150 a bit daft when I can get a Kaiser for £200!

I've had 2 MDA pro's one got exchanged by t-mobile for a vario II cause i got fed up with it doing as you described. the other is still here and starting to exhibit the beginings of the same symptoms..
If you phone is doing as I'm about to describe then you'll get your answer shortly.
My phone after 10 month's wouldn't run the 802.11 wireless for any length of time and it didn't matter if i was just browsing, transfering files from main pc to it, or just leaving it on and idle to test connectivity. if i tried to transfer a file it would reboot after about 900k or less. then you couldn't get back into today screen without leaving the device off for sometimes up to 30 mins.
with a bit of testing , re-flashing with the latest firmware at the time directly from t-mobile i gave up and just resigned to bluetooth and making calls.
at least that was being stable. then finally it started dropping calls. and would reboot and stay off after it rebooted. if i pressed the power button same thing as when wireless was on. splash screen the off. Or splash screen, 2nd splash, WM version of an egg timer and then poof reboot to black off state.
leave the device off for 30 mins No problem boots right back up as if nothing had happened.
With a TON of reading and finally 1 article i read on a TOTALLY UNREALATED MATTER ( artlicle on this board about Wifi router ) if you leave the wireless on over a long period of time it will overheat. causing the device to shut down due to an internal protection circuit.
Your answer: The device has become thermally sensative. Since my phone started to do it with just phone calls i can't blame the wireless chip as it's seperate from the GSM receiver. ( see pictures of Universal Mainboard in this forum. ) Thusly where ever the sensor for temprature of the device is that shut it off after it reaches a certain internal temp, that is the cause as far as I can determine. And i Proved that to T-mobile after 10- months of having the phone and they even replaced it with 2 other handsets that did the same thing within HOURS of using the wireless to transfer files in excess of 1Mb in size. Thusly they had me write to the customer liason department and make my reuqest that way. I asked them for the Hermes ( Vario II ) even though it was a bit of a downgrade but it was as tehcnically close to the universal spec wise as they would have been able to offer at that time.
Hope this has helped and helps others, as I am convinced that the HTC Universal has batch's out there with faulty components that cause the devices to become hypersensative to heat and even under their OWN heat generated under normal use they power off as if the battery overheated or something onboard got too hot.

LG KS20 directdraw and other bugs

So this is my first post in this forum so I 'll start with some naggin .
I am a proud owner of the lg ks20 which I absolutelly love. But its buggs are killing me.
First of all there is the free memory issue.I find it quite strange that a WM6 device with 128MB ram has only about 30MB free memory left.I mean cmon Vodafone and LG,we are talking about a huge 45 MB memory hole here.Any ideas on how to get rid of that?
Second serious issue with the is the lack of proper directdraw drivers.I hate the fact that I can not run any applications (with the exception of S2U2 whick works quite well) that use directdraw.Thats a great limitation to what one can do with this phone.
The hardware is all good, big enough ram,rom etc,top class CPU but the software sucks.
I know this is mainly an HTC forum, but I also know this is the right place to talk about WM phones when hacking and software development is concerned .
So is there any possibility to get things moving and resolve some of the phones bugs?
I have a KS20 too and would like to see some of that solved, too. But I guess we have to wait for the KS20 to be more common before there will be enough attention to get someone with enough knowledge to do something about it. I hope the English version of KS20 will come out soon and that it will get more people interested in this issue.

Did you install some strange software? OTherwise you should send your phone back to LG.
Battery always 100% and refuses to charge
Hi All,
I am new to the LG KS20.
It was working fine for 2 weeks, and now suddenly i find the battery status always showing 100%, and it just dies after a day of usage. Even worse, is that since it shows 100% always, it does not charge. When i try connecting the charger, it says battery is full, and the green LED light glows.
Can someone please help me out in resolving this issue.
Thanks you,
Jefferey Rayan
I have exactly the same problem - the 100% issue happend from one day to the other after about two weeks of use. The phone can then only be turned on by connecting it to the charger ( ac-adapter).
Some people in other forums claim it to a damaged battery, some to the 10a-ROM-version. It does not seem to be charged according to the message on the display and the greed led, but I am now about to check out if it really doesn't charge the phone. It turned it self off after about 1 minute of use yesterday, I connected it to the charger over night - today it functions properly so far...
So maybe it's "just" a matter of a wrong display message - in this case one would have to connect it to the charger every 2 - 3 days (guess the battery status) - not a very satisfactory solution, but maybe a solution until a new ROM arrives for non-branding devices.
Battery is dead - if it always shows 100%
I also have the 100% full loaded Problem!
It enoys me
LG has big Problems with their Batteries!
When you have that problem discribed above - your battery is the faulty crap.
Hardreset doesn`t help
So send your phone to LG to get a new battery,...
I am from Austria - LG Austria is not willed to help me - because LG Austria isn`t selling the KS20
The say like **** off - it`s not our problem
So I don`t know how I get a new battery.
My German Reseller told me that LG also has problems with delivering new batteries.
So a pice of crap - with Nokia they would never tell you - you don`t get support because you bought the mobile in Germany and not in Austria,...
Can anybody help me?
Shouldn`t LG Austria have to help me with my warranty?
GreeT`s Erich
I am also from Austria, bought the branding-free version at redcoon.at - they offer 2-year warranty, so I sent it back at the end of May. They probably sent it to LG Germany and it's still sitting there. I hope that according to my descriptions they will exchange the battery, otherwise I will be really pissed off. The repair takes 4 - 6 weeks they say. So I've bought a 400 EUR phone and have to stick with my old K750i for weeks, maybe for months.
I would not recommend anyone to buy this phone. It's on the market for 8 months now, no support, no drivers, no official updates. pure sh*t.
Anyone who wants a stylish mobile should go for the new HTC Diamond.
It's really worth the extra 100 EUR.
For those who have no warranty, I would recommend to plug it to the charger every 2 - 3 days until there are batteries available to buy directly from LG. Since everybody who got it's battery exchanged seems to be happy now, this should be the solution. IT DOES RECHARGE although it shows 100% full and the green led is on. I plugged it to the charger overnight and then it worked for about 3 days of extensive use without any shutdowns. So it's just the indicator that does not work.
Good luck!
The repair takes 4 - 6 weeks they say

i've got a MS25 Genius (american KS20 just without 3g, wifi, and VGA cam) from VIVO here in Brazil, and my battery stay always on 99%..
My clock is bugged too, always turns to the "Praga" clock when i sincronize with ativesync..
I'll not send my phone to LG Brasil! if they suyck in Europe they will suck a pretty much more in my ****ed up contry.. i don't want to stay 2 months without my phone..
Anyone's got a solution?
thank's!
I bought a new Battery - but not original LG.
Maybe a failure - because when I charge it - my phone turns off,...
The only advantage is it was half the price
I don`t knoe if LG has fixed the new batteries - because buying an original with the fuxing problem is sick

back to initial thread, I also have a KS20 and got some 34/37MB after soft reset with default LG app disabled...
it doesn't appear to be that much and normal...

hardwarre problem on wing

so i think my wing may be in the process of biting the big one. A few days ago, my wing restarted itself for no reason, i figured it was probably a system error and didnt think twice about it. Now all of a sudden my wing will constantly restart, sometimes in the middle of a call. Sometimes when it does restart the screen will either turn white or fade to white. I reinstalled the original rom to see if it was a software issue and it is still doing it. Also, it doesnt normally do it when it is just sitting there, and sometimes i cant turn it back on. Any ideas?
Make sure the battery isn't loose inside the case... and that all the prongs are making contact.
For the life of me, i cant figure it out. I know it has to have something to do with the phone not getting power. At this point, it wont even fully turn on. Short of taking it apart and checking the solder, does anyone have any ideas?

If you already reflashed the original rom, and it is still doing it, that tells you it is definitely a hardware issue. It does sound like it's losing power which could be a host of things. (loose battery, defective battery, loose solder on board, etc) I would try what duprade said, and check to make sure your battery has a good connection first. If you had a friend that had a wing as well, you could try his to make sure it's not the battery.

I doubt it. I would guess that's the cmos battery. If that were to go, then your phone wouldn't keep time, but that wouldn't stop your phone from functioning. (I used to work in the service center at a computer store).
maybe its the processor then. sometimes, after it freezes, it artifacts before shutting off

There is the possibility of you overclocking your phone, and it heated up and could have burned or cracked some solder. It might even be overheating and that's why it reboots. At any rate, it def. sounds like hardware though. Sorry man. You could try to resolder the connections on the board just to make sure, but it sounds like you have a paperweight. Is it under warranty or do you have insurance?
only ever oc'd once, for a few minutes, and not very high (like 267 i think) It's on right now on the power cable (this wouldnt work yesterday) I honestly have no fricken clue whats going on with it.
Is it possible for the battery to completely diminish itself without being used for a day? Before it died on me last, it had a full battery, now it is showing 1% (and charging).
By the way, as I stated above, it is a brand new battery sent to me by tmo.

Hey dcmtnbkr. I seem to have the exact same problem with my Wing. It shuts off for no reason, and it does it absolutely randomly. Sometimes it would work for 3hrs straight no matter what i use it for. And other times it shuts off every 30sec. and it takes 3 to 10 tries to turn it back on(most of the times it would not get past the windows mobile welcome screen). I was gonna flash it with the newer Rom, but i'm afraid that the damn thing might shut off during flashing . So i'm stuck. If you find the way to fix it - please let me know.
actually, i just talked to tmo, and apparantly NOW after i told them I'm cancelling when my contract is up, now they can apparantly cover it under manufacturer warranty (as opposed to the last time i called about a week ago) I would call them even if you didnt buy it from them, tell them you dont remember where you bought it, but it was some company online. These phone's arent that old and you may still be under the manufacturers warranty. Also, i would try and flash it back to the original. These phones are very hard to brick, and i would ask around to see if a powerdown in the middle of an upgrade would do it. I just got mine to reflash without a problem.
my wing rstarts itself wen i jus tap the back of it where the battery cover is but it wont restart everytime. anyone have any ides?

HD2 Heat causing freeze on soft reset

yesterday i had the problem lots of HD2 owner faced it, my device worked fine, but when i had to soft reset it, it always freezes on the white screen, and never starts up, every many times of taking the battery out, and start again, it finally started up.
i tried to soft reset it again and faced the same problem
i tried to flash the ROM again, but after many tries, i finally got it to flash, but the thing is that the problem wasn't solved, and the unit kept freezing in the start up, but once it started up it worked perfectly until the next soft reset.
but then i tried cooling the device against an AC, and the surprise was that the unis was able to start normally, every time with no problems when it was cooled
any one faced such problem with the device? i will try it again today at noon, when the temperatures are high.
I tried it again now, when the Battery temperature was 38.5, the devise did not start, when i cooled it down, it did start, and when it started the battery temperature was 35.5
can some one with the same issue confirm?
Yes I am having the same problem!
My fone did the same again last night and I'm going to try reflash it today - else the POS is going back to the shop! Not happy!
did you try cooling it down? flashing the ROM did not help me at all
Can this be a Battery problem? that the battery can not provide the required current when it's heated?
ok, i did these two experiments
1- i heated the battery alone on a air heater to almost 45 degree
and cooled the phone, but the phone did boot up normally
2- i heated the phone on the heater and cooled the battery, the phone didn't bootup
so the problem is defiantly with the phone not the battery :-(

Yes, onlywhen the phone was cool to the touch again did it boot correctly. However last night it did the same but would not reboot after leaving it for a while. I tried to do a hard reset but the phone hung on the HTC boot screen and would not go further.
This morning the OS booted but was totally corrupt - it looked like booting in to windows 98!! no graphics, no HTC Sense, no usual colour scheme and a whole whole of corrupt file messages. This happened each time I hard reset - and the USB port also failed to recognise any device. I think it's safe to say it is practically bircked and thus, Ireturned it to O2 today to sort out and give me a new handset! I think it is a hardware issue. Infact, I'll put biscuits on it being that vs software.
it is definitely a hardware issue, but the thing is, these are the first few days of summer in my country, the days when the weather is getting really hot, and i guess this is the first summer HD2 will experience, since it was released in the Autumn, so my guess is more and more units will get this issue as the weather get hotter in other countries
Hi guys.
Weird issue you are facing!.. Mine gets very hot on hard use.. today I tried a soft reset while it was hot and it started normally.
When did you bought your HD2?

i got it like 4 months ago, but i am sure now that there is a hardware issue
had a same problem...
my solution was screawing the middle battery pin under cover...
the hd2 have must have Temperature senzor...
the hd2 have 3 pins under battery cover, 1 = +, 3 = -, and the middle pins is the 2 = ?
i think the middle or the pin nr. 2, is same as ACPI in desktop or notebook, Advanced Configuration and Power Interface,
Operating System-directed configuration and Power Management,
so if your middle pin is screawed, the powermanagement tell to device stop boot!!
or if the pin dont make a contact with battery - the powermanagement canot corectly detect the Temperature and the hd2 owerheat, then randomly restart...
its only my teory, my middle pins was screawed, im take it to the right position and my device worked well... but i want more and more and i broke the middle pin
after that the hd2 boot, and worked but when i want to do restart dont want to boot...
now my hd2 is in service center... so for all i want to say:
warrnig!!! dont youse the power or angry when u want to screaw the pin back
its only my teory, im not the electro technic...
sorry for my english, but i think everybody understand what i want to say
i know sucj hardware issues are unfixable, i am wondering should i get me a new HD2 or another phone
I got mine on contract in March - 1.48 ROM. but also had the issues in 1.66 prior to sending back.
Just awaiting for it to be returned - I'll report back to let you know if sending it away has fixed the issue. I'll be a mite miffed if they just flash the ROM and send it back lol!
had the same issue: overheating / reset loop / stuck on white screen
contacted HTC, sent for repair, received with new mainboard,
now works flawlessly

I had the same problem with mine on an UK O2 network. They took it back and flashed it. Sadly that didn't solve the problem. So I sent it back again and they replaced it with a newer model. This seems to have fixed it. Sadly looks like the early ones were crapy and had the same fault.
However mine still gets ruddy hot when connected to the anything in the car.
Bad job HTC :-(
Hi all,
Actually, there is CPU's overheating problem, not battery's. ALLMOST same problem you'll have if you'll remove cooler from your PC's CPU
My LEO shuts down at 38 deg. and cannot start again without cooling. Definitely, it's a price for 1 GHz processor - it should have less power demand or good cooling system.
Hi had the same problem mine also used to reboot on it's own when connected on pc and overheated. Going to contact HTC repair and send it back. I was wondering though is it ok if i send it back with a cooked rom and 2.10 radio or will they not change it cause i've switched that on my own? Any ideas pls?

Early model as in what date.month.year?
Regarding getting ruddy hot when connected to the anything in the car, it's the connector, IMHO.
I have problems too. My God, today is the first and really hotest day of the year in Germany. When I will back in Spain at 40 degrees celsius there my hd2 will be a bomb!!
My device is a German o2 hd2...

My HD2 get so hot, then freeze!

I'm not sure if anybody here has same problem as mine. Here is the problem. After watch movie on my HD2 for half an hour, the device started getting warm and hot. It then froze and restarted itself. Then it would stuck on the logo boot up and that was it. I had to take the battery out, waited for 5 to 10 mn to give it time to cool down. Then everything went normal. This happens to me quite frequent now. It wasn't like this when I first bought this. I used to watch movie for hours without any problem.
i had this problem. my hd2 actually was burned on the back near the micro port!
search for hd2 fire to see the story.
I have same problem, who know to repair please help me
if phone is under warranty, get it replaced. did you void your waranty?
Are you using the original charger?
If your mainboard overheats just once, it will never be the same again. It's time for a warranty replacement!
sounds like it has a drug problem or is going through menopause. LOL! I had to sorry carry on.
mine so the samething too , if the back get warm up the phone freeze then restart . do the same thing with NAND too . his there any other ways beside warranty . cuz i dont know if mine phone still under warranty . i got the phone in last father's day so it havent been 1 year yet

If it has not been a full year sense you purchased the phone then yes you still have a warranty. Your issue is probably hardware related cause once a HD2 starts getting warm a lot it starts to slowly deteriorate the connections between the processor and the mainboard. The more the heating up of the processor the more and more it detiorates the connections. It finally reaches a point where it will start rebooting it self because it is trying to compensate for the lack of responses from the failing pathways. So it sound like you are experiencing this problem now. So I recomend you do an exchange while you are still under warranty.
i suggest checking the battery pins also, make sure they are straight and shiny!
HTC getting hot and freezes.
I have a T Mobile HD2 and I have WMO 6.5 on NAND and Android on SD card (16 Gig). Mostly I using android, the main problem is after like using 10 minutes of WIFI the phone gets very hot,I mean really hot and then it freezes. I have to remove the battery and wait about 10 minutes for it to cool and then place the battery and boot again. I am not sure what is causing the problem, if it is hardware then nothing can be done but if it software I am sure there is a solution. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Hi,
i've the same problems when using the HD2 for car navigation. When the phone is in the front panel holder and sun is shining, the phone freezes or reboot after a while. The phone itself isn't very warm so i think it must be something with the mainboard or the antenna. I tried with carcharger and without carcharger, same result.
search xda, there has been quite a few threads on Leo's overheating,
in short main two reasons are bent battery connectors (you can DIY), or defective mainboard (replaceable under warranty - been there myself),
to make sure the freezes or reset loops are temperature connected I'd suggest BattClock for WinMo (displays temp in statusbar) or Battery Monitor Widget for Android (keeps temp log)
if you lost all hope, and you're sure it is the temperature, and your warranty has ran out, and its definitely not connector related, then you could try checking here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982454
what kind of rom do you use? What is your Radio?
is the battery genuine one?
what programs do you use?
some bad written programs will make cpu in loops, which lead to make the cpu runs into high frequency.
do you use any setCPU/overclocking?
my recommendations:
1) install any cpu trend program/ logger to see when the cpu runs into high frequency.
2)replace the video player you used for playing the video.
3)stop all programs that are not came with your rom.
if above do not solve your problem:
task29 / install fresh rom (not the same rom).
