I've a feeling this is a back to shop job but I thought I'd check with you guys first
I've had my exec for a couple of years now and I'm extremely happy with it, I've installed flash, along with some of the standard apps, synced with my PC regularly and generally used it without incident, it's very definitely out of warranty
I had some PDF's I wanted to look at on it so I got my supplied apps disk and decided to put the clearvue pdf viewer on it, connected the xda to my PC, synced, and ran the install from the PC, it got all the way through to the final success screen then activesync locked and the xda locked
I disconnected the xda and rebooted the PC which was fine
I had to take the battery out of the xda before it would do anything, then on power on I got to the splash screen with the radio and rom versions and it stopped
I tried a soft reset followed by a hard reset but still got stuck on the splash screen
I phoned O2 who said take it to the shop
I looked on here and followed instructions to get onto the bootloader with mtty
now the "task 28" command returned
DOCInfoTableinitHW+
Binary0 Size: 0x100000
FAT0 Size: 0x4000000
FAT1 Size: 0xA00000
FAT2 Size: 0x2900000
All Size: 0x7400000
FAT0_ADDR=0x100000,FAT1_ADDR=0x4100000,FAT2_ADDR=0x4B00000
which didn't match the example in the wiki which had these differences
FAT2 Size: 0x2C70000
All Size: 0x7770000
which is a difference of around 3.5 Mb on FAT2 (which I'm guessing is set up to look like a FAT partition and it's pretending to be a disk drive)
now I'm thinking if it thinks the flash size is wrong then I've probably lost a chip and as I'm guessing from the above that it's set up to look like a disk drive losing a chunk has corrupted the disk and I can't read it any more hence the hang
is it worth me trying a reflash with standard roms or is my idea of a chip failure the right one and taking it back to the shop is the only way to go
------
additional info
now I don't even get to a splash screen and pressing the two softkeys brings up the hard reset menu without having to press the reset button as well, I've tried all the fixes for being stuck in the bootloader with no joy
I say, try the official ROM or one of the better ROMs on here, what have you got to lose? Make sure you know the process and go for it.
Don't forget to update us on whether it solved the problem
Best of luck.
Try typing "task 28 55aa" in MTTY.

I'm going to find out what an official repair would cost first of it's too much then I'll have it back and try the reflash option, cheers

Done that and I get the same table as above, and also tried "set 14 0" to get it out of the bootloader with no success
and failing all of this it looks like ebay may be a way to go
Hi esme! Wouldn't you consider selling the dead UNI?

well I'm still hopeful of having it repaired or reflashing it myself, it's the best phone/pda I've ever had and I want it to work again, but if it turns out to be beyond O2 and my ability to fix then I'll probably be looking to sell it for spares, so I can finance another off ebay
quick update on this
a week ago I wandered into the O2 shop handed over my dead phone plus some "looking at" money and it was sent off to be "looked at"
I eagerly awaited the call back saying it was going to cost several limbs to fix and could I come in for the amputation but it never came
today the shop called saying it's been "looked at" and sent back to the shop, could I pick it up sometime
"it's working ?" I said
"apparently" they said
"but they were supposed to call me and tell me how much before doing a repair" I said
"there's no further charge" they said
a few moments later whan I came to I said "huh ? wha ?" or something equally erudite and urbane
they said "no charge" rustling of paperwork "... nope no charge"
"and it works? and I'm not on some cruel reality TV show and you are just playing with my emotions to get a cheap laugh ?" I interjected
"according to this paperwork yep, dunno about the reality show but no I'm not playing with your emotions, so it's here when you want it" the man patiently explained
"erm ..... ok, see you soon"
so I'm off to town tomorrow to see if it's really true
.... I'm not going to sleep a wink tonight am I
my god ..... it's full of stars ....
she's alive! I have my arm back, I can do things
so to all the kind people offering to purchase my phone while it was bricked, thank you for your interest but I don't think I'll be selling it now
so a quick hard reset to get rid of the O2 add ons and I'm good to go
thanks for the advice guys

Please help if you can this is my first post on the site I had a look to see if anyone ells has had the same problem but did not se anything I understood to be the same.
I have been offered a XDA that has these symptoms and have decided it’s best to ask the pros before parting with £120.00 of my hard earned cash.
The information given to me is this:
“I decided to upgrade the ROM It all seemed to be going well then it just stopped loading and now the XDA wont do anything and the screen just says “UPGRADING IT WILL TAKE ABOUT 5 MINUTES” WARNING NOT TO REMOVE CONNECTIONS”
I will do my best to get additional information if required
Thanks for the time.
WOP
This is a typical situation of a failed ROM update ...
Can you get the bootloader screen (power + soft reset) ? and what version you read (5.15 , 5.17, 6.22 .... etc)
If you can get the bootloader screen with "GSM Ok", the chances are high that you can get this XDA working again using SD flashing method.
Try to get back with more info.
It is probably a good xda. All you probably need is an sd card and this forum. But meanwhile press the guy a little more. 100 will not be such a bad idea.
is £120.00 for an XDA good if it works?
I have emailed the chap with the request and am awaiting a reply from him :?:
I will also try and get the extra £20 off thanks for the hint
But let me make sure I have this write can you damaged hardware on these items when playing around with the software:?:
Or can you simply just reinstall all the software and drivers like a PC :?:

The answer is YES!! ... you can read many stories here about people ended up with a nice $200 worthy paper weight!!! ... but being carful it can be a joyful experience
This is the latest saga to this story
I am officially a real member now as I have paid out my £120.00 for this xda and now the fun really begins
Because I have no idea how to fix it
I was asked to check if it did certain things and the answer to that question is yes the information I have is this bootloader page displays GSM OK
And we have V5.15 installed I hope this means something to someone out there in the XDA world.
If you would like to help me be gentile as I am still virginal when it comes to these things but I have some PC experience and am willing to make an ass of myself
Please do not lead me in the wrong direction as Biso007 says you can read many stories here about people ended up with a nice $200 worthy paper weight!!! And that’s not good
Get yourself an sd memory card and a memory card reader writer, download xdatools, go look at www.yorch.net or http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/ have a good look around the site before trying anything. I was going to buy that xda but he stipulated "no returns" so I gave it a miss, I think it will probably be ok but I was a bit puzzled as to why the guy didnt fix it himself.
How when why and where
These are the questions I will problem be asking for a while I have received the item and in its normal mode it has lines all over the screen with two rectangular boxes going long ways across the screed these are clear.
I have done a hard reset and have it shows this wallaby bootloader v5.15 on a white red green and blue screen at the bottom left hand side it has GSM OK when you hit the action key it runs some tests I collated this information most thing got the thumbs up but some did not SIR RX error and RTS-CTS err come up and froze the system.
Can this one be fixed or do I have a door stop.
If it cam be fixed Can I download the XDAtools on this site?
If you pass your mouse over this link xdatools you will get a box pop up, scroll down and click on download, use the sd flash method and good luck.
can i :?:
Hi cruisin thru
Thanks for the directions you have pointed me in found the tools and have down loaded them.
As I have a working XDA and an sd card available to me buy no card reader/writer available at the moment is it possible to download the correct files from a working XDA to one that is not working via an sd card or the cradle or some form of direct link?
regards[/b]
Yes. You can dump the rom from a living XDA to an SD card via the bootloader. However there is a caveat. The living XDA may suffer a hard reset, so you must ensure a full back up. Put your SD card, preferably 64mb into the living XDA, go into the bootloader and when you get GSM OK hit the upper left button (Calendar Button) and select CE Rom to SD. Leave the system until it is completed. Then pop your SD into the dead XDA and enter the bootloader the usual way. If your card is okay, the rom should be recognised and you will be prompted to download rom. Follow the instructions, the rest is easy. Good luck.
back in a tick
Sorry I have not got back to you in a bit I was waiting for my sd card to arrive from the USA.
I think I got quite a good deal just over £40 including P&P for a 256 what do you think?
I will try what you mentioned in the last post and once I’m done I will let you guys know how it went.
Any last minute advice from the professionals out there?
O my god
What can I say I now have 2 working XDA’S with loads of memory that will let me put any sim card in and I
thank all those that helped me to solve this problem and those that set up this fables site well done to you all
I have one more question to ask?
 WHAT CAN I TRY NEXT
Hey guys,
Todays i dropped the XDA2 and it got some scratches near the bluetooth blue lamp. It looks a bit ugly, but i could only be thankful that it didn't die.
Few hours later, i charged the thing, took it off, left it for a while, grabbed it to use the calculater, finished using it, was closing the application, AND BOOOM, a hard reset for no reason.
Note : I was closing it through the battery pack X icon on the top.
Question is, what was that for, and am i to expect sudden death hard-resets in the future, and if so, what can i do.
Thanks in advance.
LOL!
"Hard-Reset For No Reason after it had dropped"
Yeah! Sure..
"Pasient died for no reason after surgery by drunk doctor with a leatherman"
Try getting it serviced..
If the problem doesn't get fixed, return it to the same service point..
Depending on the laws in your country, you might get a new one after a while..
Well i bought this one from england, so i don't know there is any way of returning it, that if the returning policy of O2 includes getting a hit on the ground.
The question remains, will it do this hard-reset again...?
Any one with similar experience.
hard reset
Mine has done involuntary hard reset 2x now. Both have been whilst using the Agend Fusion application, On the first occasion it wiped and disabled a 512 SD card (real pisser) and the second aload of backed up appointments notes etc that I'd just entered. However I did get the SD card before that too was wiped. Thats the good news.....
For you the bad news, since my original post I've had no response to my query. I've checked out the issue with Dev one the designers of agenda fusion cross checked the ROM version and all to no avail!!
Pisser I know, but it seems to me the only way to protect from this is regular backups to PC and use Xbackup to a seperate SD which you always carry.
If anybody can add anything more useful please advise.
Finally, you can take it back to o2 and ask for a replacement as the superficial damage didn't appear to have an immediate effect...
let me know how you get on with this I'm interested.
Pete
I'm not intending to return it O2, it's working, and maybe this problem of Hard-Reset was just due to that when it was dropped the battery got misplaced or that some dust got into it which cause that Hard-Reset.
That was 1, 2- I live in Egypt, and i have to send it all the way back to O2, not unless something really bad Happened, like it doing this hard-reset on it's one 2-3 times more.
A backup will be a VERY GOOD CHOICE. (Please do it for god's sake, or you will have to lose everything, I've warned you!!!)
Thanks for sharing.
But the question remains, Will this damn thing do it again, maybe time will only tell.
I had to send my ameo for warranty repairs. It took ten days before I had it back even though they initially quoted 3 weeks. I had to dig out my old Tornado (backup, backup, backup, as they say ). Fortunately I was in the eleventh month of my contract and so could get a free repair. They actually gave me a new unit but sent my old keyboard back.
Now my questions are
- how many of us have had to send our units back for repair and
- how far into your contract were you or how old was your unit?
- finally, is there a way around the microdrive issue; precautions, tips, etc, perhaps that would help? Or are we to be ready for another breakdown in 11-12 months time?
Please feel free to post your experience. Many thanks,
Abram.
I sent my X7500 Advantage back to HTC a couple of weeks ago when the microdrive went read-only, with some corrupt data, and various different attempts at formating failed. I got it in May last year, so that's about 11 months for me, too. I had already registered it online, and the warranty period stated there started a few days before I purchased it and ended in July, oddly.
Here in the UK HTC aim for a 5 working day turnaround. I flashed the HTC version of WM6 back onto it and sent it on the Thursday, at my own expense, and they acknowledged receipt on the Friday both by email and phone. I got it back last Wednesday, microdrive replaced but the buttons had all failed. I had to send it off again, again at my own expense, and got it back again yesterday microdrive and buttons working - they had replaced the "switch board" this time.
Another strange thing: when I came to reinstall everything my initial attempts to flash failed. I noticed the SPL had gone back to 1.10, so they obviously did something else too. They've not mentioned to me or listed in the job sheet any mention of finding Olipro 1.20 on it and obviously they've not charged me.
I spent many hours last night reflashing and putting all my software back on it (fortunately I have a list of all my registry keys) - only to notice I downloaded AP 3 Touch rather than AP 3 Dual. Oh well.
Ordered mine the day it appeared on the t-mobile website, so 13 months and counting.
Not one single hardware fault with it so far, apart from the dent from when i dropped it and the little rubber bit falling of the joypad.
Despite the warnings at the start of the microdrive issues on the T-Mobile Ameos I've been absolutely fine since day 1.
seems that the microdrives can be pretty hit and miss.....
7 months of daily use at this point, and no MD problems for me. I had all of my applications installed on it, and its what I used to store all files except the pictures my camera took (sending new pics to flash memory helps reduce problems of blurred pictures since the write delay is shorter). I'll admit though, that when I re-flashed the ROM a few weeks ago this time I installed everything to flash and I'm using flash for my personal files. I haven't touched the MD since, so it might be bad now and I wouldn't know.
3 months
my md died after 3 whole months. It simply disappeared from the file manager. I've got a 7501. After explaining to the tech support guy what a microdrive was(??!!), I sent it in and it was repaired. When I called to check on the status of the repair, I was told that the drive was ok. The controler was supposedly bad, so the motherboard was replaced. It's been about 6 months now since I've gotten it back. I've transfered all the important stuff to an 8 gb micro-sd and I'm just waiting for it to fail again. Once it does, I haven't decided if I'll get it fixed or just get by with the sd.
I wish pocket pc techs would come out with an upgrade to replace the md with a flash drive.
Thinking about it, i did have one problem. I had been playing about with the HTCmail service, and out of curiosity, wanted to see how well the remote device wipe worked on Exchange 2007.
Bloody thing formatted the microdrive and it disappeared from the OS completely.
Tried formatting three times - nothing. My heart almost stopped!
Had to run the recovery thing in WM6 twice before it came back.
I would recommend that if you have an Athena, DON'T use remote wipe. the Microdrive really doesn't like it.

Seems like the forum has quite a few microdrive issue posts. There was one that claimed that the "format Microdive" tool in the unit MUST NOT BE USED. I did use it on mine prior to my MD getting problematic. Did anyone else use theirs?

I've used it before, and have no said problem. 13 months now and still going well. Twice the content was corrupted and files were missing. Soft reset always fixed the problem.
No Microdrive problems yet (touch wood). I have formatted it a couple of times, but using the hard-reset mechanism rather than the 'in-os' Format microdrive tool. My fault was with the 3g radio failing, and I 'think' I've had a complete replacement unit which has different imei, different case but same serial number.
But yes, here's hoping for someone to come up with a way to replace the MD with Flash
Just sent mine for repair
Just mailed my X7500 to Houston for repair. The Microdrive disappeared after about 9 months and I'd continued to use the device with it broken until I had the downtime to part with it. No amount of soft or hard reset did any good, nor did the format tools in ROM or in the OS. Oddly, I thought I heard the faint whirr of the drive when doing an in OS format.
It sure would be nice if they'd swap out the drives with flash memory whenever someone sent one in. The little things are clearly failure prone, as I remember from having a Hitachi 4GB CF card with intermittent problems. This falls in the realm of manufacturing defect, so I would certainly hope when the newly installed Microdrive also fails, they would warranty its replacement as well.
even though, I dont posses athena, I have used MDs when I'd ipaq 2215. They never worked for more than 4months for me. after that duration, I used to experience data corruption blah blah.
May be they got it right with the x7510
It is already very reliable on the older Athena based on my own experience.
I've had my athena for 7 years now and not had a problem with the microdrive....

months..right?
Looks like my microdrive is on the way out, struggling to read or write to it without it filling with junk.
Just checked I bought it 30/04/07 so going to see if I can get it warrantied.
I got mine back from their Houston Service Center on Monday. It looked like I got a different screen as the screen I sent back had a screen protector on it and the one I got back didn't. It also has 2 small scratches on it that I am sure were not on the original screen. Lucky me it was not very noticable. Otherwise, I have to send it back again. The internal components are probably new also (most likely refurbished) as the IMEI has changed. However, the serial number is the same and it looks like they printed another S/N, IMEI label and use a piece of cello tape to stick it to the battery cover door with some of it still sticking out of the battery cover door. How tacky! Oh yeah, and they reused my Athena's casing to house the new/refurbished stuff inside!!!!!!
The only good thing about sending it back is that I got an extra battery. When I sent back, I didn't include a battery. The one I got back has one. So now I have 4 batteries altogether. Oh yeah, and the MicroDrive is fixed. Though, I won't hold my breath that it will last for long.
I bought mine during Thanksgiving 2007.
Hi All,
I've had a bad "tech" day today Walked into work, put my laptop down and dropped my X1a . I'm 6'4" so its a pretty long way to drop even if its on to carpet. Sure enough, turned my phone on and the LCD wont turn on anymore although I hear the expected sounds etc
It is under warranty since it was bought at a Sony Style store out here in Massachusettes but the issue is that I had a custom ROM on it and without the screen turning on, I wont be able to replace it with the stock SPL, Radio, FW etc etc..
So my question is, do I even bother sending this thing in or do I spend the coming weekend disassembling this thing in the vague hope that I can fix it.
Anyone got some wisdom to offer on this?
Thanks much!
well u dont need the screen to be on to flash it , and hardspl i dont think they will check it for a physical damage fix
dl a stock rom and flash it with sd methood
Thanks... I guess I'll have to call in and see what the repair process is like.. Any idea on the average round trip time from me sending it in to getting it back repaired?
It took me 3 weeks to get mine back
Lol
I can relate to that, I'm 6/4 myself and havnt had one phone I havnt yet dropped, except my Xperia, but my girlfriend fixed that one when taking it off me while I was getting my new born nephew out of the car, so I hadnt o choice but to let the phone hit the floor when she dropped it. Couple of nasty scratches on the front casing and a really annoying one on the screen but I will have to live with it, I can neither take it out on her or the fact i had the littlun in my arms.
Anyway, to flash the SPL is probably the most difficult, but still simple, it just needs to be in USB mode (VOL-+POWER) from off and do the rest from PC. As for radio/ROM, use the SD method, requires only 1 button press which is the power button I think to confirm and then you're good to go.
It may end up stuck at connection setup or something, but they wont care, and if they do you just say you had sensitive data on there and had to hard reset before service.
As for timing I don't know, I'm yet to take mine in over the keyboard problem because I can't do without the phone a the moment.
I had same problem with screen, and they didnt take it under warranty because dropped me and flat cable gone. Took it to SE service, 40$ and two days work...
Does the service center check the SPL? I sent it twice w/0 changing to stock spl with no problems.
send it... dont tell them you dropped it unless you can tell that it was dropped. you got nothing to lose except a bill telling you what it would cost to fix it.
Mate, there is an other help to your case.
There is program for PC called "Jeyo Mobile Companion 2.1".
Download a trial (works for 30 days I think) and you will be able
to see what would be on the phone screen on your computer.
I used that to backup all my mails when my screen was broken.
You just have to have that program, connect your phone via USB
and you will be able to see the screen on your computer.
If you don't really get me, or you have further questions -just ask!
probably u could fake them by telling them it didnt work since this morning... blah blah blah

It rarely pays to lie to the person taking your phone apart; they can almost always tell you're lying. Not telling, however; that's not the same as lying ;D
Had my HD2 since November, screen quit responding to touch. Hard reset multiple times, finally gave up and sent it in for service. Got an e-mail from the service center with the following:
Diagnosis:
Mianboard hacked/illegal software.
If you cover the price for mainboard replacement they will take care of the touch panel issue in warranty for you.
Suggested Repair:
Replace Mainboard.
Total Repair Price:
$317.43
I argued with the service center manager for about 15 minutes, explaining to him that I had never flashed a hacked ROM. He's supposed to be provide me with proof that the mainboard was hacked tomorrow.
It wasn't until I got off the phone that I realized that I had loaded HSPL and when I looked at the NOOB guidelines again, found out that it didn't get overwritten when I flashed from 1.43 to 1.66. That must be what they are talking about.
Not sure how this is going to play out, I never loaded any cooked ROM's. Is there a way for the service center to see that's the case? Will they simply say that the HSPL software constitutes the mainboard being hacked, end of story?
What do you think?
Sorry for the cross post, thought this may be a better forum for this issue.

Yup most likely.
Refuse repair, and tell them to send you the phone back unrepaired.
Overwrite HSPL with stock SPL as explained in the HSPL thread
Send the phone in again.
Solved
If they want to play fools (they of course know HSPL can't be the source of the problem), you can too.
yep its the hspl that is the bad part. they wouldn't have said anything about a cooked rom most likely, its the hspl that is the dodgy part.
Thanks Kilrah, I thought of that but it I also thought it would be too obvious to the service center. Might be worth a try if they balk at the repair though.
Yep of course there's a risk they take a note of it, linking it with the phone's S/N, and that they see it the 2nd time. But you'll most likely fall on someone else, plus if they do moan again you can always ask them to show evidence, which they won't be able to do this time... and even if they still insist you'll have just lost shipping. If they don't, you save the amount of the repair

Just got to thinking, when I flash using the sd card technique to remove the HSPL, will it go through the entire process without any prompting or need for screen input? If they send the phone back without fixing the screen, I won't be able to initiate any prompts on the screen.
