Internet Sharing 6.1 - Mogul, XV6800 General

I just upgrade my mogul to the sprint 6.1 rom and radio. Now it doesnt give me the option to select SPRINT PCS or PHONE AS MODEM. i used to use SPRINT PCS and it will connect and i use thether with the usb cord. I can still thether using the usb cord however just wanted to konw if i will be charged for doing so? I use about 3GB per month.
I was reading about doing some registry edit, but not sure where to find that information again.
Any help?
Thanks

Internet Sharing on WM6.1 (Phone as Modem)
The first thing that I noticed about WM6.1 was that the second drop down list (which showed Phone as Modem and Sprint PCS) was missing from Internet Sharing.
I called Sprint Technical Support and threw them in a tizzy because they had no idea that this changed. Their final response to me was, "... don't worry about it, you have Phone as Modem on your plan so you're fine."
That being said... I have CoPilot 7 installed on my phone. In the Internet Options section of Live Setup there is a drop down list which shows:
Default
Phone as Modem
Sprint PCS
So there are obviously registry entries that CoPilot is reading to populate that drop down list.
Strictly a "WAG" but it looks like:
1. HTC screwed up on this one when they came out with the new ROM.
2. Sprint told HTC to remove it but no one in Technical Support got their TPS Report ("did you remember to put the cover page on your TPS Report").

Softbank X01HT on t-mobile GPRS setttings

Hi,
I have tried for over a month now to get my Softbank X01HT(same as HTC TyTn and tmo MDA?) to work with the t-mobile usa gprs with no luck. I have contacted t-mobile and spent over two hours on the phone with them trying different things to get it to work. I would like to know if anyone out there has gotten this to work and if so please share with me how? Also, is there something preventing the phone from accepting a connection from t-mobile? The phone was purchased unlocked. I am using the HTC TyTn ROM on this phone.
Thanks in advance,
Mine works fine
Hi Braheem,
I have a softbank x01ht and have it connected to the tmobile network here in cali. When I first got it i just dropped my sim card in it and input the network settings from tmobile and I was on surfing the web with no problems. Three days later I couldn't connect. I allowed this to go on for three days and I finally called t-mobile. The first lady I talked to in tech support said everything was fine and nothing was wrong with my account. Then she asked if I wanted to go to pda support so I said sure why not. I just told them that my phone was the same as the mda II and she informed me that what had happened was I was on the 5.99 internet plan and they had a script run through and disconnect ppl that were using that plan with pda's. Only thing I think is maybe seeing ppl with high internet usage and then disabiling it? She said if I sign up with the pda plan for 29.99 then I would be able to get on in 24 hours. 12 min later i was up and surfing the web again and it has been that way for over a week. She said to get to pda support just say pda at the voice menu. Anyway hope this helps. If you need network settings they are on the t-mobile site, but i can help you out more if you aren't sure what to put or where to put them.

I have an x01ht with the 19.99 blackberry plan in california, usa. Mine has been working all the time. all you have to do is on your "my-tmobile" change your phone to any blackberry and get the 19.99 add-on internet plan and allow 5 to 10 minutes for the plan to activate, on your htc go to start>settings>connections>Connections click on add a new modem connection
and fill everything out:
Enter a name for the connection: whatever you want
Select a modem: cellular GPRS, 3G
Access Point Name: wap.voicestream.com
leave user name, password and domain empty and click finish
Now from here you can have internet but its going to take a while the first time you try to access it. Open PIE (Pocket Internet Explorer), you will see a pop-up notification when the gprs/edge is connecting. load any website. I suggest using google.com to make the load faster. Its going to take around 2 to 3 minutes for the page to load completely.
Now here is something nobody else has done in this forum, something new and fresh. You want faster internet? Here is what you have to do:
First, download and install a registry editor (I personally use PHM RegEdit)
Open it and go to HKEY_CURRENT-USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
now look for "ProxyEnable" click on it and make sure the value data is set to 1 (it will enable proxy to work on PIE), if it doesn't exist (which i doubt) create it, to do that go to edit>New DWORD and fill it out like this:
Value name: ProxyEnable
Value Data: 1
Base: Decimal
click ok.
Now create a string value with the name "ProxyServer", to do that go to edit>new string value and fill it out like this:
Value name: ProxyServer
Value Data: 216.155.165.050:8080
click ok.
Now restart the device and run PIE, you will clearly notice how the pages load faster.
The reason I know this is because I am a network professional, I will not explain in detail why this settings make the internet faster but ill try to make it as clear as possible:
You can get the 5.99 t-mobileweb that will allow you to ONLY use the PIE. You will not be able to use e-mail, stream media or use im clients because the ports are blocked.
The blackberry add-on plan will allow you to do everything possible with internet on your device but they internet speed is slower.
Both plans use the same servers but the ports make the difference in speed, so to take advantage of the best qualities from both plans I added the proxies for exclusive use of the PIE in the registry (since there are no settings in the PIE software to configure the proxies).
I hope it helps you. Please forgive my weird english i'm Colombian. if you need further help feel free to PM me.
I am new to windows mobile devices but I can be of help with things related to networking.
How about on AT&T's 3G network?
Interesting posting. But would your suggested ProxyServer value be good also for AT&T 3G network? Actually, I am trying to use my Softbank X01HT(Hermes200) with a non-AT&T ROM to access its Media Net (with a Media Max bundle plan), but don't know the proper settings.
All I saw so far were postings for Cingular (AT&T) 8525 which is officially supported by AT&T and perhaps >95% similar to X01HT in hardware. But I suspect the ROMs for these two phones are different, so the settings should be different too. Is it true? Can you help? Thanks.

Post here problems and fix for new official 2.15 AT&T ROM

It would be good to put bugs and fixes to problems found on latest official 8525 ROM.
1.-The side dial problem could be a starter.
2.-No streaming on this update
3.-After this update you won't be able to go back to 1.34
Solution for number 3: Run enterbl.exe from your device, then the RUU for official 1.34, then you'll be able to downgrade
Anybody has a solution for 1 and 2?
BR
Good Idea.
Could I suggest that as issues are resolved, either you update post #1
or maybe even the WIKI?
I hate to see things get buried in an exausting thread.
Thanks,
Berd
Sure thing Berd!

Have you checked your USP to PC settings? There is a a check box to enable Advanced Networking. Try both settings (i.e. ticked and unticked) and see what happens.
Not sure if its the update, but my device hangs every so often. probably once a day since i updated last week. but that could be anything...
unless its happening to someone else as well...
no blackberry connect
not only is there no blackberry connect, but all versions I tried would not connect using the 2.15 rom. i've got to have bb email (unfortunately) so I rolled back to 1.34 official rom and 2.1.2.52 bb connect.
If anyone gets bb connect working with this new rom let me know.
fyi- I downgraded by using the sd flash card method described in the wiki.
After 2.15 update, I can't surf via the GPRS connection
I realize it is specific to connecting to the Cingy service as I can surf when on WiFi, but I have tried all the connection issue links I could find on the forum. I have to be missing something. This happened right after I upgrade to the new official ROM.
Here are my current settings.
MediaNet connection
Number= wap.cingular
Proxy Settings: only check box is on 'This network connects to the Internet'
The 'this newtork uses a proxy' is not checked. I tried it checked to and no dice.

Select a modem: Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)
Access point name: wap.cingular
User name: [email protected]
Password: CINGULAR1
no domain
Advanced button: use server-assigned... for both TCP/IP and Servers
I have 3G in task bar and depending on what I play with in the settings.. sometimes it will seem to be grabbing the site and then it was 0K and finish with no error and nothing on the screen.
Other times it will error out.

actually.. i have found this release to be very very stable.. no freezes yet!!
can't disable startup sound
I recently upgraded my 8525 to the new rom provided by att/cingular (actually it is provided through htc's website, I found the link through cingular) I have some questions and was wondering if anyone can help.
The rom update doesn't give you wm6, it is still 5. It does enable the push to talk feature, and rebrands the phone as att instead of cingular. It also enables "cingular video," which is a streaming video service through att/cingular.
Now with the newer rom there is a horribly loud start up sound. It sounds like an airplane is taking off. Every time I soft reset the phone it plays this loud sound, even if my phone is on silent or on flight mode. This sound was not there before I upgraded the rom. I went into the folder where the sound is stored and tried to delete it, it will not let me. When I right click on it, the delete option is grayed out! The file is just a windows media sound, it is stored under the windows folder, and is named "3G_Up." I even tried to do it through the phone explorer on active sync, still won't let me delete it.
I am wondering if anyone knows a way to delete the file or somehow disable the start up sound. I have looked at all settings and don’t see any for start up sound.
I am also wondering this: I assume flashing a cooked rom will eliminate the cingular startup sound. If I flash a cooked rom onto my phone, will I be able to use the “push to talk” and the “cingular video?” Neither of these worked with the original rom. The “cingular video” is just a bookmark, and I tried sending a link from my phone with newer rom to an 8525 with the older rom, and it would not load. On 8525's with older roms when you push the push to talk button, it says "the ptt service is not yet available on your device."
I am assuming I have to choose between a cooked rom with no cingular video and ptt, or just live with the start up sound. If anyone knows any other way, I would just be thrilled
Thanks,
Jon

I have found the way that you tether is different than the older rom. I disabled USB connection through active sync, and connected USB cable. Then run program "internet sharing" on 8525. Then open internet explorer on pc, and begin using internet on computer. That is all I have to do to get online.
I'm not running this ROM anymore, but the solution to #2 should be to disable the IE proxy. This is in the Wiki.
The Wiki is your friend.
Follow this link: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes
Scroll down to "Tweaks" and the near bottom of that section you will find your RegEdit to delete whosh sound.

can't disable startup sound
Do a registry search for animation. You'll find a startup wav file setting. Delete it and the startup sound is gone.
You know, I just can't understand why people would still run the completely useless Cingular/AT&T ROM build. My rom *never* crashes, never locks up, I have tons more ROM memory and I don't have all those stupid "hey, this is a cool program that you COULD use for only $9.95 a month" programs they foist into the rom...
But, I guess if you'd rather have trained monkeys at Cingular giving you "support" instead of the people here, many of whom are engineers of some variety, and know the rom's and phones inside and out, who can argue with that....
One confused Elf.

I can think of several reasons... some people dont want to flash a cooked rom.. some people want the PTT feature which does not exist on a wm6 rom yet (this alone makes this rom NOT completely useless, but would make yours useless for some people).. for some people this rom is very stable... i got a million more reasons..

Its also a safety net for the noob such as myself for the next few weeks. Though I am a big DIY from electronics to cars.. when I get a brand new phone (as this one is to me - 8525) and I have it as a work phone.. I am going to read every thread I can until I am sure my curiosity doesn't leave me bricked because I missed a thread that says.. waitwaitwait... don't do that, do this, pfew, saved you a trip to buy yourself a new phone. So, in the meantime, I will play it safe with a supposedly official and tested ROM until I get the cohunas to dabble a little deeper. It has nothing to do with my trust in the forum.. it has to do with my abilities to read some of the semi-cryptic wording that I don't fully understand yet and applying what I can figure out step by step. I understand the concepts of a cooked ROM, just not fully any of the downsides.
So, as my previous thread stated, I ended up going with the official 'newer' ROM from HiTeCh and afterwards I couldn't connect to Medianet. So I call them, talk to support for 30 minutes and then they hand me over to HTC for an hour. After all that, I get another phone. Since I am now a 'Connections' afficianado from having everyone and brother at Cingy and HTC walk me through over and over, I decide to change my new phone which is currently on 'My ISP' and switch it over to MediaNet. This is (as far as I understand it), what the new ROM is forcing me to do anyways. So I change over, it connects to MediaNet just fine... and then I try to surf the web. SAME THING HAPPENS. So, it turns out the old phone was not the problem, it is either something wrong with Cingular or something wrong with my plan. I change it back to 'My ISP' and I am back surfing just fine.
The moral of the story, I would recommend getting the MediaNet setting/connection workng first before you upgrade the ROM. That way you know when you upgrade the ROM and it forces you to use MediaNet (the My ISP setting no longer worked for me after the ROM update), that you haven't killed your internet surfing capacity. These are just my ramblings so if anyone has any ideas/questions let me know.
If the answer for how to get passed this has been posted a million times, I haven't found it in my searching for the past 4 days since I got my phone... and thus immediately went to the new ROM when I saw it was available... so please point me in the direction... and flame on!
How to handle HTC x button

Thank you for your suggestion, but I tried this before with no results.
AT&T is probably doing it on purpose (no streaming) to make us use their pay access software.

Sprint SERO users and phone as modem

I have not read or found anything on this before. So I thought that I would share what I just found. in the support section under sprint power vision it give a tutorial on to use your phone with the phone as modem and it make no mention of a charge for that service. So I asked a online chat rep. they said that it was included with power vision. So I said thanks disconnected started a new session asked again they said that it is not included. So I asked for a number to call they gave me a number for sprint employees as I have the SERO program, and apparently that is considered an employee account.
I called and asked them the same question to the live phone support person. She took a look at a few things and said yeah on the SERO program it is included but not on the power vision. So I asked her If there was anything I needed to do. She said nope I will add it onto your account. I once again verified that it was no charge she said that the SERO plans have it as a option for free but it is not by default turned on.
The number I called is 1-888-503-3078. It was given to me by the send online support person.
I am going to sparingly try it for a few days and then check it out the billing to be sure. I will let all you SERO users know for sure.
Hey i just called and asked the rep the same questions and what she told me was that sero is not covered under the phone as modem deal. She said it would cost 40 dollars a month for it so i decided that it didn't work for me. On the other hand i own the mogul and i asked her if i was unhappy with the performance of my phone because of it having crappy firmware update etc... she said i can call insurance and have them replace my phone with one of my choice for a 50 dollar deductable.
you should try these guys.
you pay a small fee one time till the exp of the license which should last a few years if i remember. just read the details of it. i have used it on sprint network with my treo 650. it works like a charm. you dont need to call sprint to ok this. just as long as you have a data plan on your cell phone. preferably the unlimited one as you will be on there for a while.
http://www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/index.php
personally, i could never get pdanet to work for me so i used usbmodem. after a while, i got lazy and just started using internet connection sharing and bluetooth.
oh yea, no charges for any data whatsoever
I just use Internet Sharing and bluetooth, I'm on the SERO plan, and it works *fantastically*. I get 60Kbps downloads w/out problems and have run VOIP over it.
I couldn't get ICS over bluetooth working correctly, it always drops the connection and shuts down bluetooth on the phone after about a minute, even with the latest ROM. WMWifirouter works great though, I'm getting around megabit/second in places with good coverage.
From primenall's posting in this thread:
There is one edit that should be done, that will eliminate a step in the connection process and will hide your tethering activity. Credit goes to Luv2Chill..... here's the Qoute
""""" OK I've poked into things a bit more and yes it seems Sprint is up to no good in regards to tethering. Those of you running Sprint ROMs should remove the following registry value:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing]
"Extension"="rilphone.dll"
Usual caveats about editing the registry apply here--don't do this unless you know how."""""
Removing means Deleting that entry from the registry, (it doesn't delete rilphone.dll just the shortcut to it when you open I.S.)
Once done tethering is simple using the included Internet Sharing....
USB should only be plugged into PC at this point...
1. Open Internet Sharing and hit connect (it opens a data connection to Sprint)
2. Plug usb into phone, wait a minute for PC to set up and that's it.
Always hit "disconnect" in I.S. BEFORE removing USB, always.

I deleted the regkey and connected via Internet Sharing without issue.
Once you get that working, check out WMWifiRouter. Turn your PPC into a wireless modem/router.
That reg key removal worked just fine for me. Did a small test with it and seems to work just fine. Now the wait until next billing cycle!
keep us updated on the outcome of that bill!!

You should really try WMWifiRouter. The Sprint EVDO network is capable of much more than 60KB/s, but thats about the limit that you can achieve with bluetooth. WiFi on the other hand has much greater bandwidth and won't be a bottleneck like bluetooth. I don't use it much, but I can get around 130KB/s down using WMWifiRouter.
I was wondering... If you have unlimited data plan and setup your phone to act as a modem via the USB connection how can they stop you from using your phone as a modem? Shouldnt we get the full bandwith of Sprints network just doing it that way?
im using that WMWifiRouter thingy, and at first I was doing PAM conneciton (didn't realized it till I knew), then i started getting remote disconnected error. I assume Sprint stopped it on their end. Now I'm using PCS Vision. I really doubt I'm gunna get charged for tethering with the PCS Vision connection, I didnt even do any registry mod/delete.
My question is... Will I get charged for those time I was PAMing? I just wanted to seperate my usage charges to know if I'm getting charged for either both PCS Vision connection and PAM, or just PAM.
I get download speeds of 95 to 150kbps using rapidshare, btw

Sure, if your WM hardware uses BT1.2. If it uses BT2.0, then no
BT2.0 is gonna give you 3mbit/sec on the link, vs .721mb/sec
The 3mbit should be faster then any EVDO network you can find
Power drain should be significantly lower on the phone as well.

P.A.M. locked out?

i recently had my mogul replaced.
the new one sprint gave me gave me a code 67 error whe i tried using internet sharing (though internet access on the phone worked fine)
i spoke to someone at sprint who had me do a sort of refresh, and an update.
it still would give me the code 67 error.
the agent informed me that i do not have P.A.M. on my account, so it will not work (can i charge you another $15/month?), and that many accounts were set up wrong and sprint has been trying to phase out PAM is accounts that were set up incorrectly.
though i suspect the replacement phone had a different internet sharing program on it, that no longer allowed me to use my dataplan for PAM, since this one only gave me the drop-down options for USB or bluetooth, while my previous mogul had a second drop-down menu with the options Phone As Modem or Sprint.
i've tried searching, but couldn't find anything specific to my issue - though i assume i'll need to flash to an earlier ROM from this page
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=TitanStockHome
is this correct? and which ROM do i need?
current OS is WM 6.1. i do not recall if my previous mogul was 6.0 or 6.1
thank you
edit: i hope this in an appropriate place. i actually meant to post this in the upgrading etc. section
edit: also, does flashing my ROM void my insurance? and if so, would they have a way of knowing i did? what about if i bricked it? i am with sprint

Tethering: Is there a way to avoid being detected by Big Red?

In my sig, you'll see my phone history. With Alltel, I paid a low flat rate for internet service that allowed tethering. Now that I have the Ozone, Verizon requires that I pay $30.00 a month for unlimited access through my phone. The moment I tether, Verizon recognizes it and requires I sign up for their Mobile Connect plan of 5GB access a month for an additional $30.00 a month.
That's $60.00 a month folks for a service I paid half for with Alltel.
Is their a way to circumvent detection? I'm a truck driver and the phone and computer are my only sources of entertainment while I am gone for weeks on the road. I really love hulu.com. But the limits that I am now restricted to makes it difficult to enjoy CHiPs (go Erik Estrada! lol...)
Seriously, I'm a Battlestar Galactica addict and I need my fix of sexy cylon ass. Any help would be awesome.
Try out
junefabrics.com PdaNet. Worked well with my Palm Treo 700wx as well as my Ozone.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how Verizon detects tethered traffic from handset traffic?
Its not so much that VZW can detect that you tether... its that they've locked down that option from your handset.(*)
I believe that on all VZW smart phones Internet Connection Sharing is either locked down or not even included in the phone's firmware. This means, from VZW's perspective, if a Cust wants to tether they need to get the Vzw Access software... so thats how they know and how they can charge you.
As mentioned in a previous post... pdanet does allow you to get around this. Its worked really well for me, although I've never gotten to Bluetooth tether to work :-(
(*) I have heard rumors that VZW has monitored traffic and has contacted customers who they suspected were tethering under the rationale that they were using too much bandwith w/ their smartphones. This is just second hand rumors though...
Use this and avoid the verizon tethering software.

Correct me if I am wrong... but, I looked through that thread and isnt that software package for Windows Pro?
The Willow(Snap/Ozone/3G) are all WinMo Standard. Also, I believe that before you can have a VZW phone like the snap broadcast as a WiFi spot it has to have ICS installed.
Sadly, I've tried to get ICS installed and have tried to get several different HotSpot programs to work an so far nothing has worked on my Ozone. If anyone has successfully done it and wants to share I would greatly appreciate it.
I thought there was also some number like *___ that you could dial when connected to the Maple as a usb/bluetooth modem as the dial in number that would let you access the data. I don't know if this would be detected.
Hate to say it but T-Mobile rocks. I tether all the time on 3G and no extra charges, 20.00 a month and I have unlimited data. Why anyone sticks with Verizon is beyond me... And dont give me the old coverage line, T-Mobile has grown a lot coverage wise and 3G will be nation wide by the end of the year. GSM is the only way to go

While T-Mobile has a great data plan, their calling plans are not great. I require national coverage due to where I travel. Alltelwas awesome, Verizon, not so much.
T-Mobile, Sprint, Alltel, and AT&T don't work locally at my house in appalachia, only Verizon. So, it just seemed the logical choice.
I wish Alltel stayed around.

When was the last time you checked T-Mobile coverage? I have friends that live on Brown Street in Appalachia, they use T-Mo.
This issue was my first to take care of. Use WMWifirouter. I use it all day, can teather via USB or Wireless. No additional charge.

Couple questions for you then...
Are you using the OZONE for VZW? And if so, where did you get Internet Connection Sharing since VZW removed it from the phone.
Thanks!
ICS is found here.
Download Here!
You may need to change some settings in ##778 before you connect. Here are some instructions I found on ppcgeeks.
Before you start using Internet Sharing, you need to go into EPST (##778 send) from the Phone Screen,
Choose Edit
Password= 000000,
Press View Info
Select M.IP Default Profile,
Edit DUN NAI and change it to [email protected] (this should match the above 'NAI' setting.)
Phone will reset. Now try using ICS. Should work fine.
I used the above method and was able to connect. wmwifirouter will connect to, so I may purchase that now.
Or just try that WMWifiRouter for free for a month, then buy it, no ICS, cool app.

WhatsGoing on here
I cannot download the link to ICS that was posted above (I dont know if it is dead or what) I do havea copy of ICS that i was using on My 6800 but when i Install it on my Ozone it says that it was for a previous version of WinMo. and when i try to install WMWIFIRouter It simply says "Jorrit Jongma WMWifiRouter cannot be installed. Try installing again to a different location choose a location: " Device or Storage Card. and Neither one of them work please help
I know a lot of you out there are using windows pc's but there are a few of us using a mac, with my mac I was able to set up a bluetooth modem connection without changing any settings or buying any programs. When you pair your device (I use a verizon Ozone) it will allow you to use your internet connection. The settings are available in drop down menus and are as follows:
Phone Vendor: Generic
Phone Model: GPRS (GSM/3G)
Username: <blank>
Password: <blank>
APN: <blank>
CID: 1
then I chose to show modem status in the menu bar and it makes it very easy to connect from there.
After that you may need to go to network pref. then to bluetooth and under the default configuration put in a telephone number of #777 include the # sign.
I don't know if this will incur additional charges I just figured out how to do it, I'll update when my next bill comes.
I hope this helps mac users and maybe sheds some light on how a pc user could get their's to work
They work with Window Mobile... I was told that they have a contract with Window Mobile and Window Mobile would report all internet usages on all phone lines to Verizon.
Hi all,
Don't you thing tethering is simply detected from the user agent ?
When I had this type of problems in France, I used :
https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/59/
This way, you can have you laptop to send the same uder agent as you Snap with, say, Opera mini.

I don't think so, as you could do it the other way around
Use IE User Agent on your smarthphone - pay as if you were tethering?
Correct me if I'm wrong, and sorry if I shouldn't be reviving this thread.
