I have a Sprint Mogul and basically hate it because it's slow and poorly designed. So I switched to the Treo 700wx and like it a lot better (or at least as much as anyone can really "like" Windows Mobile).
Rant aside, I have the Mogul still and have been trying to set it to simply access the net via WiFi, but it just is showing me no love. I can see and connect to my access point fine (just as I could back when I did have a cell plan for it). But when I try to hit a page with PIE, it tries to connect to the Sprint network. I've tried deleting the Sprint connection out of the network settings as well as unchecking the "This network connects to the internet" box. But it doesn't prevent it from trying to connect to the cell towers instead of just using the WiFi.
Ideas?
Ensure you have the Wireless connection pointing to "The Internet". You should also run a ping test and ensure your router is handing out an IP via DHCP properly.

Frankly the phone is not really going to be appreciated (as it can be) by more basic PC user. Sounds like you want a more (pardon the expression) dumbed down version of PPC.
Instead of turning on wireless and then looking at available AP's... go into start/settings/connections tab/WiFi and try connecting from there... I noticed it to work better from there.
BTW... if you really start hating that thing... let me know and I will send you a pre-paid shipping box

..and if you happen to forget to send the box... I'm right behind you and will happily take his poorly designed and slow Mogul.

I just moved into this new place, just got the Cox Cable internet installed yesterday, picked up a new "Belkin N Wireless Router" model # F5D8233-4. Works fine with the laptop- I've had it setup using unsecured, WEP, & WPA/WPA2 Personal. No problems on the laptop. Inexpensive Dell Inspiron with Vista Home Basic.
However, the Wing will not cooperate at all. It only wants to connect to unsecured networks. It will connect to mine and others it detects in the appt complex. But as soon as any type of security is enabled it just tries to connect for a few seconds, then the network becomes unavailable. I'm soo tired of clicking around in the Wing with this stylus, I'm about to throw it out the window.
I've set up a static IP on the laptop so to better work with port forwarding & Azureus. Will this have an effect on what I'm trying to do? I can't see how it would, but I'm no expert.....
So here's what I've done. In the routers setup page, I've selected 64bit wep, typed in a passkey and hit generate. Wrote down the 4 keys it generated, saved the changes and exited the router setup. I think where I'm messing up is what I should be doing next with the Wing. Can anyone walk me through this?
About the only thing of note that I've done to the Wing as far as tweaking is concerned is to install Home Screen/Battery Status, overclocked to 260, and tweaked the registry to allow ring tones from the sd card.
HELP!!
maybe your wing uses the same ports as the ones you've forwarded to connect to your router. You should always make it really obscure (something like 65530-65534) to make sure that there are no conflicts between other apps and any port related protections your ISP may have implemented.
You are setting up your wing with the key, right? It might just be that the wing is incompatible with 64bit wep.
Let me clarify- the port forwarding was set up for the Azureus bit torrent client. Way obscure ports-in the 49,xxx-50,xxx range.
Yeah, setting up the wing with the key. The only choices are 64 and 128bit wep. And the WPA/PSK. Neither work. When the little window pops up asking for the net work key, I enter one of the ones I wrote down. The thing doesn't seem to be compatible with any type of security. Which kinda sucks....To use the wi-fi at home, I have to leave my router open to "signal thieves".
thats funny, actually.
I have my linksys wrt54g set to 64 bit 10 hex security and it works just fine. Maybe your problem has something to do with the wireless n part of your router? The wing is not compatible with draft-n. Does your router also broadcast with wireless-g or b?
It does...I just switched it over. Waiting for the Wing to reboot then I'll try again. Good thinking.
Ok, that didn't work either. The selections in the router are
1- Off
2- 802.11g,
3- 802.11g, 802.11b, 802.11n
4- 802.11n
It was on #3, I changed to #2 and no luck. Grrr...
Have a look on your wireless lan power settings, my Wing also had huge wifi problems all fixed when I changed the power to better performance.
I think I found a thread that mentioned that while researching this problem. Anyways, I've already made that change.
Which network adapter is the wi-fi one? Is it this- "SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter"?
oh by the way just remembered something from my noob years.
make sure that your wing's adapter connects to "the internet" not "work"

I've had the exact same issue with my MDA and originally with my Wing. It works fine now, I'm not sure why.
I just flashed to Open Touch 6.5. Still a no-go.

The wifi is just like a laptop's wifi, it connects to a wireless router and since it's not going through the cell phone towers, it will not charge you.

OMG....I'm getting soooooooooooooo tired of dickin around with this thing. Now it won't connect to any network, secured or not.
I tried importing a certificate from IE on my laptop, because I got an error message on the wing saying the net work needed a personal certificate to identify me. Didn't work.
I tried a hard rest. Didn't work.
I've tried about 56,345 soft resets. Didn't work.
If there were any trees in the state of Kansas, I'd go bang my head on one of them. :

It works fine with my current ROM. (JustMe by... Me. lol)
I'm pretty sure it's not a ROM issue...I just flashed this thing late last night. It started not connecting to anything late afternoon yesterday, while the stock T-Mobile ROM was installed.
The stock ROM never worked properly for me...
Try another ROM.
What's the best WiFi interenet sharing solution? WalkingHotSpot, WiFiRouter,
JoikuSpot, ICSControl, Internet Sharing, or Tethering, etc. Is there another option? What's the advantages and dissadvantages of each?
What I would really like is to have a solution that allows me to configure how many people can connect and/or some kind of security, WEP, or anything at all. Is that possible?
I tried using the Internet Sharing Utility but I would keep getting a Verizon sceen saying I needed to sign up for a different service. I tried both WalkingHotSpot and WiFiRouter. WifiRouter seemed to keep my WiFi on all the time and allowed unlimited people to connect with no security, and WalkingHotSpot I couldn't get working for some reason, but it didn't look like you could set up any security with that either. Thanks for the help and time..
I don't think wifirouter can be beat, I have used it and prefer it.
I hear there is a bug in it that allows it to keep your WiFi turned on all the time. I heard there is a WEP feature and a feature that allows you to kick IPs off from using it. Do you know anything about this? Thanks.

I am not sure what you are talking about.
But you can set up a secure wireless network. It is only on if the switch is on so when you disconnect and turn switch off its done.
I have run the program for 10+ hours straight while on the road it kept the wifes laptop connected anywhere we have connectivity. I do run a amplifer and external antenna for those weaker areas.
Go check out the documentation at this link to see if the info is there?
http://support.wmwifirouter.com/documentation/
What version of the software are you using? I don't remember seeing any of those options with my version. It seemed to still have WiFi working even when the button was off, the icon looked like it was still working, but I didn't test it.. Thanks...
wmwifirouter is my favorite and my dad's by far
I have been all over the net as well as this forum and have had no luck with my issue. I am hoping to find some assistance. I had to stop my data plan with Sprint to downsize my current expenses and I am trying to set up an internet connection using either the cellular modem or hayes compatible modem to connect to MSN. I have dial up access with MSN and have tried so many different configurations (including placing MSN/ before my username). The phone attempts to connect but almost immediately tells me "The answering modem has disconnected" or "Unable to connect." I really only want this to occasionally check email and such when I am not home or have easy access to my laptop until I can better afford to re-subscribe to the data plan I had. I would deeply appreciate any and all help anyone can provide. Thanks in advance.
I'm shocked by this, truly............
How do you think your internet access worked in the beginning.......dialup!!!!!!!
So, of course you can not just dialup for the internet. If that was the case, all PDA users would cancel their plan and dialup on their own terms.
Wha? When I had my p4300 on Unicel, I was able to dial up and connect, pretty slow however.

This is my 1st PDA device so I really haven't given it THAT much thought... thanks for the UNBIASED opinion and CARING attitude btw. There are settings under connections for establishing an internet connection, these settings include phone # to dial, username, password, domain name, etc... all the lovely things we used to have to use to connect our desktops and then laptops to the good old internet in the beginning... yes, dialup!!! If the phone has this function it is only resonable to expect to be able to configure it. They would probably not be too concerned about how many people who would be willing to do this since it would be a much slower connection and therefore, not appealing to most users.

Well.....guess what all the required info for a connection is for, your network's dialup connection. Remember when you plugged your phone line in for dialup? You paid for phone service to dialup, right?
No you cannot JUST configure to dialup to a network and logon if you do NOT have the permission and access to the network.
There is a reson people pay for the service.
He still has phone service though.
so going to alaska to work for 3 months with my dad and brother. Brother says he cannot use his HTC HD2 up there with T-mobiles network so they will allow us to get unlock codes for them and then we will use AT&T's Unlimited talk and text but we would like to see if there is a way to use the Wifi on our phones to surf the web on either browsers. We would be doing small things like checking our email and bank accounts.
Any help would be appricatied

Absolutely, as long as you're within range of a wifi network that you have access to (i.e. one at your home/office or a public access point like starbucks, stc). You don't have to have a data plan to use the wifi, if that's what you're wondering
Another thing to remember if you have a nationwide plan with TMO using other towers is usually not a problem.
At home I use an AT&T tower about 30% of the time, I live in the boonies , so a nationwide plan has no roaming charges no matter who's tower you are using ...

haha I wish that it would even get a bit of service. Brother is already there and he says he can't even make a call without losing service. T-Mobile said they will suspend service for 3 months or how ever long it takes and will add it to our 2 year contract.
And so he trys using Wifi which the building he stays in has and when he goes into opera or internet explorer he gets an error, trying to find the error from him and will post. Does anybody know if their is settings that need to be changed. He is checking this by turning off the phone radio and only connecting to wifi. He does not want to be charged extra by AT&T, thanks for your help.
we do have custom roms on our HD2's. FYI
EDIT:Error for Opera Could not locate remote server

Sounds like the phone is not getting everything it needs from the access point, some type of misconfiguration, needs to make sure he is getting and IP address , gateway and DNS servers .... should browse over wifi without using the phone radio with no problem, do it all the time at home ...

So I basically found out that the network adapters were set to manual config and I should set them to automatic. Which I did and was able to connect to recieve my mail and go on the web via wifi with radio turned off but this is at my home which is my belkin.
I then tried calling him and having him set it up (he's not so tech savy) and he was connected to linksys and it still gave him the errors, He is going to the office of the company he works for to see if he can get the password for the other wifi network that is on the list. He sees people on their laptops browsing internet. So maybe i'll just buy a little Netbook for going up there.
Thanks for all your help you guys.
Hi,
I live in Australia. I bought a SGS from UK. It has nothing changed in firmware its the same as it comes from the box. (just a few games and apps installed from the android market).
My problem is when I connect the SGS to my laptop through the USB cable and I chose "PC INTERNET" I get a connection but i get a lot of drop outs, I would say being honestly every 5 minutes my connection drops. I live right in the city and my phone has good reception so its not the reception.
I haven't tried teethering (i dont wanna teether coz mobile plans says, NO teethering).
What can I do to fix the drop out connection problem.
if you are using your internet via the LAPTOP over the USB cable, then you need to figure out WHY your LAPTOP is not connecting properly to the Internet.
it takes about 1 min to connect and when it connects i choose HOME connetion. than it works good for 5 mins and it drops out and reconnects itself.
Correct me if I've read your post incorrectly but isn't what you're doing tethering?
From Wikipedia: "Tethering is the use of a mobile device such as a mobile phone to supply Internet access for another device which is otherwise unconnected, using the mobile device as a modem. This can be done through Bluetooth wireless technology, Portable Wi-Fi hotspots, or cables (such as USB)."
well yes and no...
it is teethering but carriers cant prove that.
however
if i do select teether on my phone it says something like this option will use black hole date or something (from my understanding is that it will use different data to my free date) so i choose to try the cable connect than select interent connection.
anyways the problem is still there... has anyone got any solutions or give me some ideas?
thanks
are you trying to use your phone as a modem or not?
if you are, then we can help you there are many ways to do it.
but if you are doing the opposite, using your laptop internet, for your phone to access internet (which doesn't make any sense at all) then we can't help you as it's a laptop problem.
im trying to use my phone as a modem but in a way without carriers finding out im actually using my phone to teether.
my problem is that my connection keeps droping every 5 minutes for 10-30sec.
I use my Galaxy as a modem and I had nothing but hassle when connecting using the cable. I found out its far better to go into settings then wireless settings then switch mobile AP on. Your phone sends the connection over wifi to the pc and gives me no hassle at all.
I reckon the only way your service provider would know is by looking at how much data you use so just be careful and you should be fine. Or find out what your monthly limit is and put a data counter on the phone, I use Netcounter, its free and simple but gives the info you need like daily, weekly and monthly usage
yup, the wireless method is by far the easiest one, and best of all it is build in!
as for your cell phone provider finding out, regardless of what you do, they don't care, they only check how much data you used up, and charge you that amount
well im on 1gb per month. Plenty of data there.
I tried another method today: turn bluetooth on and connect through bluetooth and that seem to works perfectly. I was online for 3 hours without dropping once.
Now I`m wondering why was it dropping with the cable connected? And not even once through bluetooth!
I understand your Problem, but at time i reading your last Post i have an question.
I understand your Posts that you dont use Wireless thether becouse your Carrier dont Allow Laptops to Acces Wireless conections right?
But it makes no difference if you use the cable or a wireless conection to thether your Internet. If you surf under the radar you dont getting into troubles. And there is no blackhole Data when you tether wireless. Its a gprs, edeg, 3g or umts Connection and your Phone manage this automaticly. So now comes my question. Why you dont use the build in wireless tether function which is the fastest and easiest way to connect. You dont need the phone directly near the laptop, you can give it to the point of best data connection, okay and a powerstrip for the akku. But its much faster then the Bluetooth connection, becouse of wlan.

"And there is no blackhole Data when you teether wireless"
From now on I will use the AP to connect. I thought the carriers (OPTUS) might find out. But since they can't find out than this is the best option. Thanks for confirming they cant find out weather I connected my laptop or just used the date from my phone.
This remind my at the old days where you share your internet connection thru a soho rooter or just another pc with 2 network cards built in. In these early days the Provider says its forbidden to use the connection for more pcs than one. But in fact they never could meassure this and no one ever gets an letter from them or an contract decline/service interuption. The truth is, that there was a kind of law process against them and now the isp's is forbidden to limit the usage of your internet connection to only one device. So that means not that you get unlimited numbers of ip adresses, but you can NAT as much devices you want. Now you get from every ISP a Preconfigured router if you like.
And the same will hapen over a pariod of time to the wireless providers as well. Its your connection so you can use them the way u like it. Its already happend here, you can buy umts router for your home.
Where i live there is no question like this. Just do it. But maybe its becouse of our mentalogiy. If somone says no the typical austrian will do it anyway and gives no dime to what others say. If no one forbid you something then its allready allowed to do. ;-)
Greetings to Australia (the country with the kangaroos) like we here in Austria say. lol
